Hubbard Award Finalists
In 1985, R .D . Hubbard dedicated a scholarship fund to recognize and encourage excellence at Butler . Mr . Hubbard and his wife, Joan Dale, have devoted many resources to the support of Butler students and facilities . The Hubbard Center, Hubbard Champions Training Center, Hubbard Welcome Center, and Hubbard Award of Excellence are but a few of the many gifts they have provided . Through the Hubbard Foundation, more than $3 million has been donated to our college . The Hubbards support numerous high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States .
MADISEN CIESIELSKI
Madisen will continue her degree path at Wichita State University majoring in Music Education . Madisen is a member of the choir group A Cappella, is involved in the Kansas Collegiate National Association for Music Educators organization, manages the social media sites for Butler Fine Arts, and is a Resident Assistant in the dorms . Madisen has been described as being “a diamond in the haystack .” Madi has a rare gift for guiding others and encouraging them through the learning process . She will be an excellent music educator . ”
CARISSA DALQUEST
Carissa is completing her associate degree in Agriculture and Agribusiness . She will continue her education at Kansas State University majoring in Agricultural Economics and Animal Science . During her time at Butler, Carissa has been pivotal part of the Livestock Judging Team while also serving students as a peer tutor ambassador . A faculty member describes Carissa as a “phenomenal student, teammate, and friend . ”
HALEY MOUSER
Haley will graduate with an associate degree in Agribusiness . She will continue her education at South Dakota State University majoring in Agriculture and Animal Science . Haley juggles being a 4 .0 student, a board member for the National Junior Hereford Association, the President of Butler CRU, the vice-president of Butler’s chapter of Collegiate Farm Bureau, and a leader in Ag Ambassadors . Haley is described as “well rounded,” “quick to learn,” “dependable,” “determined,” and “humble .”
ELIZABETH SCHAFER
Lizzie will continue her studies at Kansas State University majoring in Animal Science and Agriculture Communications . Lizzie is a valued member of the Livestock Judging Team while also hosting BCTV’s BuCoNation Weekly Update . Lizzie also spends time volunteering with Ag Ambassadors, Collegiate Farm Bureau, as well as having a 4 .0 GPA . Lizzie is described as a “well rounded student with a phenomenal head on her shoulders who just flat gets things accomplished .”
KADEN WARNER
Kaden is completing his associate degree in mass communications – sports media . He will further his education at The University of Kansas . Kaden was recognized by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters with the Best Sportscast award for his work on the Monday Morning Sports Report on BCTV . Kaden is an integral part of streaming Butler events online; from board meetings to sporting events he is leading a crew of people who are running cameras and video boards . If Kaden isn’t working on a BCTV production he can be found in Residence Life serving students as a Resident Assistant .
Order of the Purple
The Order of the Purple was established to recognize graduates who were outstanding in scholarship, leadership, service and character . The first group of seven students was inducted into the ORDER OF THE PURPLE in the spring of 1937 . Over the years, the requirements for this award have changed as standards and practices have changed Today, to be eligible for this honor, students must have completed 30 hours at Butler and hold a 3 .75 or higher total grade point average . Students inducted into ORDER OF THE PURPLE receive a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement as a distinctive symbol of their academic achievement .
Order of theGold
In 1985, the Board of Trustees created the ORDER OF THE GOLD award for students who maintain a 4 0 GPA Students who have completed 30 hours at Butler and achieved a 4 .0 total grade point average are honored as ORDER OF THE GOLD . These recipients were inducted into ORDER OF THE PURPLE earlier today and received a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement as a distinctive symbol of their academic achievement The recipients also received a special display plaque during the Honors and Awards ceremony .
Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society is an international honor society that recognizes and encourages scholarship among two-year college students
There are more than 1,200 chapters around the world . PTK provides opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence . PTK members are inducted during a special ceremony held each fall and spring semester At Commencement, PTK members are distinguished by a yellow stole .
Early College Academy
Butler’s Early College Academy offers high school students the opportunity to learn about key industries while earning college credit up to an Associate degree, industry credentials, and skills to make immediate contributions in our workforce Early College Academy students are distinguished by a white cord .
Military Affiliation
Students and faculty who have served or are presently serving as Active Duty, Reserve or Guard members will be distinguished with a Red/White/Blue Cord .
First Generation
Thirty-three percent of higher education students today are the first in their families to attend college . Butler recognizes how important this milestone is for both the graduates and their families First generation students are distinguished by a green cord

THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE
Butler Community College’s Chain of Office is burnished bronze It features a large central medallion with the Butler logo “B” and the words Butler Community College, Kansas . The Chain also displays our four timeless institutional values . On the left, over the President’s heart, is the insignia of helping hands and the words “Service” and “Caring .” On the right is a lamp of learning with the words “Quality” and “Integrity ”
THE COLLEGE MACE
The college mace is an ornamental staff symbolizing the power of the college . Butler Community College’s mace is made of hickory, a tree native to Kansas . It features large central medallions with the Butler logo “B” and a continuous band denoting the establishment of the college in 1927 and a reiteration of our timeless institutional values: Quality, Integrity, Service and Caring . The mace is topped with a flame symbolizing the transcendent power of education .
ACADEMIC DRESS
Academic regalia evolved from caps and gowns worn in medieval universities . The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are usually made of plain black material without trimming, while the gown for the doctor’s degree is faced on the front with black or colored velvet and has three bars of the same material acrossthe sleeves . The bachelor’s gown has long open sleeves, the master’s longer closed sleeves with arm slits at the elbow, and the doctor’s bell-shaped sleeves extending to the wrist .
Hoods are worn by master’s and doctoral recipients . These hoods can be distinguished by both length and color, with master’s hoods being three and one-half feet long and doctor’s four . The color of the velvet hood edging is wider for the doctoral hood than the master’s . The lining of the hood shows the official color or colors of the institution which awarded the degree The color of the hood edging indicates the area of study in which the degree was received .
