BUT Film Festival the 14th Edition Fellow traveller! Before you lies the result of a year of hard and dedicated work by the programming, production and promotion teams. We hope you enjoy the festival as much as we enjoyed the preparations! Our festival location at De Nieuwe Veste has undergone, or is in the process of undergoing, reconstructions. This has implications for the use of the square for performances, the market and food & drinks. The film programme is the result of one year of cherry picking and scouting at (inter)national festivals, such as Sundance, Imagine, IFFR, Razor Reel, OFFscreen, Hacker Porn, Sadique Master and Courts-mais-Trash, whose kind organisers I would like to thank, as well as the people of our festival locations and tours: De Nieuwe Veste, Chassé Theater, WORM Rotterdam, RKZ bioscoop Groningen and Filmhuis Klappei Antwerp.

Finding films for festival screenings is getting harder – VOD platforms (or merely waiting for such a platform) are holding back many films from the international festival circuit, even for a small (BUT great!) festival. Luckily, independent filmmakers still submit their films directly to us, and I would like to mention the affiliated distributors and sponsors: Magnolia, Stray Dogs, Jinga, Troma, Unearthed, Wingnut, Raven Banner, Darksky, Memento, Periscoop, Artsploitation, Gunpowder&Sky, Universal, DUST, IFC, Imagine, Reel Suspects, and many more. Gratefulness goes out to Breda: as a festival we are glad to add some edginess to the ever-lively festival spectrum of the city - and to the Dutch Film Fund for recognising our odd film program. As in previous editions, the film program consists of about 50 features, grouped in segments: Main Program, Bloody Belgium, Midnight Extreme, a small section of gaming related films, documentaries, and underground music related films. Short films have become a greater part of our program, lined-up in different Short Blocks, before a feature film or as an all-day marathon. There will be two retrospectives of filmmakers that, in our opinion, have contributed to genre in the past or to the festival itself: please welcome Harry Kümel and Scott Schirmer as our festival’s guests of honour. The festival’s main theme will have a larger presence in the program than in earlier editions: Alienated: Earthly Estrangement and Alien Vibes. Multidisciplinary is the word! BUT brings together film, music, performance art, poetry and art in a five-day kaleidoscopic immersion which none of your senses will be able to escape. Therefore we are also extremely pleased with the collaborations: KOP for art, and BAD TASTE FESTIVAL for the metal friday. I wish you a pleasant and inspiring festival!

BUT Square BUT Square Need a break from all the terror and the horror? We’ve been there, so don’t worry! In between the screenings, we offer a unique side program at the BUT Square. The program varies daily and tries to further stimulate your sensors and senses creatively. This includes music and poetry performances, art exhibitions and homemade food, so quickly browse forward for more info!

Ticket Sales Inside

Our ticket office will be inside this year, so please follow the signs to get your tickets and coupons! As a result of this change, the outside terrace will be a lot bigger. Mind you, after 22:00h the ticket office will move outside with the only possibility to pay tickets and coupons by debit card (PIN)!

Catering

At BUTFF, we know the best way to conquer BUT movies is with a full stomach! What’s on the menu? On Thursday we serve freshly made pizza, on Friday Doktor Worst will serve sausages with his renowned Nondeju-sauce. On Saturday we get a visit from Wok Me Home and on Sunday we get fries from Paul & Anneke! In a hurry to see a movie? Make a quick stop at our super Tosti bar.

BUT & BEERS

This year we have DAB on tap and a special selection of bottled beers. Every day we serve a different draft beer from a local brewery, eg. Bliksem, Boegbeeld and Witte Anker. On top of that, our own master brewer has brewed a special blond beer for your fine taste BUTs called: Rocket Science. The presentation of the BUT Beer will be on Thursday around 18:30h at the Square.

The Dutch film festival for B-movies, Underground & Trash Films! For five days, this is the home of films packed with violence, absurdity, creativity and corny stuff! We are looking for visitors who... : • do not immediately start screaming at the sight of a drop of blood! • can appreciate creativity to the absurd! • can perfectly combine cosiness with watching films! At this festival, we exclusively screen B-movies, Undergound & Trash films, or, in other words, BUT films. Films whose quality does not depend on expensive special effects, high quality acting or a slick story, but rather on the unconventional. Unconventional in terms of form, technique or content. In short, there’s no place where you can experience the average BUT film the way you do at our festival!

Harry KÜmel special guest Bloody Belgium Nothing better to start the introduction of BUTFF guests with Harry Kümel, the last living filmmaker of a generation of Belgian filmmakers who shaped Belgian fantastic in the 70s and 80s! Similar to contemporaries Jess Franco and Jean Rollin, Kümel made the slightly erotic low budget vampire film: LES LEVRES ROUGES (DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS, 1971), which became a true cult film around the world and is loved in genre and collector circles. His feat will forever remain the fascinating MALPERTUIS (1971), for which Kümel managed to catch none other than Orson Welles! Inspired by Greek mythology, the film explores the limits of madness and enchantment in a hallucinatory nightmare. The hereafter and the present are intertwined, and the dead have such a hold on the living that they lose their mind. In the film, a young sailor inherits the house of his mysterious uncle, and appears to be a prisoner of his family members and the labyrinthine house. A forgotten gem of a movie to rediscover. Guests - BUTFF 2019 Scott Schirmer GUEST of honor SCOTT SCHIRMER (Indiana, 1974) is an American independent horror filmmaker and editor, living in Indiana (USA). BUTFF has been following his work for some years and screened HARVEST LAKE, PLANK FACE and FOUND, plus some of his production work like HEADLESS and SPACE BABES FROM OUTER SPACE. As a well-deserved THANK YOU! and to give a talented and hard-working filmmaker a chance to present his films to the Dutch (and European) audience, BUTFF has decided to invite Scott as a festival guest for the 14th edition! Scott’s films started appearing on festival screens from 2012, in a time when cinemas and platforms were cashing in by releasing one remake and uninspired sequel after the other. With his original screenwriting, offbeat art direction and surprising story development, his films drew the attention of not only horror freaks, but also people who had seen it all and were looking for something refreshing or off the beaten track. In a Scott Schirmer film there is always more than meets the eye. Theme program:

BUTRR (pronounced as Butterrr) is a collaboration between the BUTFF and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival (Bruges). Each year, both festival directors challenge one another to ‘color outside the lines’ with the BUTRR selection. Concretely, this means that programmers select films for each other’s festival under the denominator BUTRR. BUT Light Obviously, BUTFF is the most fun when you are with lots of friends. In other words: fill up the car and come see us! Unfortunately, someone always has to make the sacrifice of being the BOB (Dutch for the one who hasn’t drunk any alcoholic beverages and serves as the designated driver). And to make sure that this person isn’t afraid to drive home after a few films, we have put together a BUT Light selection. This means a selection which is not too heavy or too intense and almost free of blood. Okay, 2% at most. But don’t worry, for a bit of devilish delight at the beginning of the evening doesn’t hurt at all. Check the descriptions of the films from the BUT Light selection for further information. Feeling weird? A stranger in a strange land? Maybe we are all aliens. Our planet is supposed to have originated from a random explosion of matter that didn’t exist before that. Life on earth distilled itself from small amounts of dust coming from a said-to-be endless void. From that dust, human kind was created by moulding a man’s body part into a female. The world then suffers its first global mass-hysteria, because a fictional bearded creature put his son into woman without getting his hands dirty. Doesn’t that sound sci-fi to you? Sci-fi Films about estrangement and alienation are the basis of this year’s theme program. Space is the place, embrace some alien vibes! Why Sci-fi? More sci-fi films than ever are being released to cinemas, festivals and platforms. We are looking for the offbeat ones that defy the formula and repetition. We think the genre is in need of a BUT makeover. The only limitations are those of our own mind. And we’re not forgetting our classics either - we will present a selection of Alienation themed films and sci-fi cult classics at the Chassé Theater. BUTFF Shorts Marathon The blocks of shorts are a wildly popular part of the BUT Film Festival and therefore always sold out. That’s why we’re offering anyone who missed out another chance to see the shorts in Block 1, 2 and 3 on a relaxed Sunday afternoon. There’s something for everyone in this pleasantly exhausting marathon session: over the top gore, absurd humor, alienating trash, unrestrained creativity and a large dose of films with a heightened BUT factor. This narco singer from Rotterdam is a notorious maniac who mixes a Tex-Mex style sound with the raw energy of punk. He started playing bass and guitar in punk and grindcore bands. After his first tour of Britain however, Joe was kicked out of the band after several run-ins with the law. In 2004, back in Rotterdam, he started developing his own sound: the narcobilly sound. In 2015 he collaborated with metal band Alien Possession and released an album called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Narco Lordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. All nice and fascinating, but just put on your balaclava and let's go. Keep it narco! During this show the new movie The Narco Lord will be shown by Hurricane Joe.

The annual extreme music event hosted by BUT Film Festival is taking on a more international flair this year with the booking of old school U.S. black/death metal band ‘Funebrarum’. Formed in 1999 in Clifton, New Jersey, these deathsters have released several full-lengths and EPs to critical acclaim. When a band like this visits Europe for a festival run, it is our obligation to add these legends to the bill! Supporting them are talented Dutch trio ‘Turia’. Fresh off the Roadburn festival last April, these Dutch primitive black metallers have really made a name for themselves in the last couple of years. Mysterious, desolate and minimalistic haunting sounds, guaranteed to send shivers down your spine! Also on the bill: Finnish old school grind /death metal band ‘Galvanizer’ and a talented young band from Germany, black metal newcomers ‘Kapala’. They will be playing their first show outside of Germany. For fans of Watain, Ascension and Agalloch!

Guess who’s back?! It's The Sex Organs! Intergalactic sex 'n' roll from outer space! A primitive, trash, garage, space odyssey! The Sex Organs were formed in 2014, played their debut show at the legendary Funtastic Dracula Carnival in Spain and immediately became a cult act! Dressed as gigantic male and female sex organs, they play wild, sweaty trash and roll, sending the listener into an explosive climax song after song! This is as primitive as it gets – a stand-up drum kit, a guitar and infectious lyrics about the sexual condition of the modern times we live in!

Music Program Sunday: Lik de Kikker Lik de Kikker was born on christmas-night during a mushroom trip (no Joke). Helm op! Ze komen eraan! Al vele sterrenstelsels zijn gevallen, en gingen ten onder aan de zwerm intergalactische nazi insecten en hun vadsige gevreesde leider 'Odalf halve-liter'. En onverzadigbare drang om superieur te zijn aan alle levensvormen in het heelal. Maar verzet is gekomen! We slaan terug! LIK DE KIKKER komt naar het BUTFF! En zet daar een verdedigingslinie op. Met een genadeloze muur aan tech-noise en tot aan hun vliezen bewapende kikkers met grote vliegenmeppers, insectenspray, vangnetten, blasters, en alles wat het grofvuil en de kringloop te bieden hadden, zullen ze voor eens en altijd een einde maken aan intolerantie in dit universum. I make Dutch-language indie doll in which tension between what is ironic and genuine is central. I put together my music at home from start to finish including recording. Some songs are about HYVES or failed house parties; other songs are about transience and regret. Finally, every song has its own genre and character. Poets & Performance Alienated schmalienated Er zijn er die voelen zich een klein groen mannetje in een wereld van smurfen. Klein en groen, maar vooral klein, in een wereld van knalblauwe gasten met een te grote, totaal bezopen neus. Zelfs als je blauw bent, kun je je in dat wereldje een buitenstaander voelen. Vraag maar aan de Smurfin. Weer anderen voelen zich een lelijk eendje in een Daihatsu Mud Master C garage. Of een pistool dat ketst in een Texaanse gun shop. En Brechtiaanse vervreemding is wat anders dan economische vervreemding. Vraag maar aan Marx. Karl of Groucho, dat maakt niet uit. Zelf was ik vol van verwachting en hooggestemd toen ik ter aarde kwam in het land van Hol en Neder, een natie met fijne tradities als dwergwerpen, zwijnsknuppelen en zwarte pieten. Maar hoe BUTwaardig dergelijke gebruiken ook zijn, als Swarthje voelde ik me stante pede van mijn omgeving vervreemd. En zo hoort het ook. Iedereen heeft recht op zijn portie aliënatie. Daarom is het fijn dat er BUT is. Ook dit jaar zullen onze dichters en performers weer trachten uw geest dusdanig uit model te slaan, dat u aan het eind van het festival van voren niet meer weet dat u van achteren leeft. Zelf weet ik dat al jaren niet meer. Als ik een vinger in mijn hol steek, kijk ik over mijn schouder om te zien wie er achter me staat. Was getekend, MC BUThead

Woensdag 28 augutus Ghu-boys from Nippletonius! De grondleggers van de Alien Space Trash keren, speciaal voor het BUTFF, terug naar Aarde! Na een spetterende show tijdens Cultuurnacht Breda, vereren de ‘Ghu-boys’ (spreek uit als khuh-boojz) ons opnieuw met een bezoek om het BUT Film Festival te openen. Wie de ‘Ghuboys’ niet eerder gezien of gehoord heeft zal verrast worden door het elektronische bombast waarmee de bewoners van de planeet Nippletonius hun boodschap aan ons aardbewoners overbrengen. Maar laat je hierdoor niet afschrikken… ze komen in vrede!

Joshua Baumgarten

GOPI

Joshua Baumgarten / The Irrational Library – (1971) Expat suburban NY jew living the life in the Netherlands. Was taught early on by overly nationalistic school teachers to either ‘love it or leave it’ so he left it. Now up to his neck in the muck of cultural agitation in Haarlemtown, Baumgarten is considered to be the second coming of some unknown beat poet from the ’60s. He hopes that one day, poetry will be the golden shower to rain down upon all the nationalistic idiots around the world.

Maxime Garcia Diaz

Maxime Garcia Diaz (Amsterdam, 1993) is een scheikundig element met symbool Hg en atoomnummer 80, een zilverwit overgangsmetaal dat als enig metaal ook bij kamertemperatuur vloeibaar is. Tot ongeveer het einde van de 20e eeuw werd ze veel gebruikt in thermometers, barometers, manometers en sfygmomanometers. In 2019 won ze het NK Poetry Slam.

Jeroen Sloof

Zijn naam is Jeroen Sloof AKA Welig tieren. Hij houdt van metaforen, homoniemen, spreekwoorden, ironie en zelfspot. Hij streeft een breed palet na ten opzichte van stijl en thema's. Doorgaans zit er wel een vleugje Rock'n Roll of Punk aan zijn poëzie. Of korter samengevat in de woorden van een bevriend dichter: Een rijk palet aan onderwerpen, heldere beelden in verrassende ritmes, soms gezongen, maar altijd verstaanbaar.

Al enkele dagen loopt er een vreemd figuur door Breda. Het is niet van deze wereld, maar waar wel vandaan is niet duidelijk. Communiceren met dit paarse figuur is tot op heden nagenoeg onmogelijk gebleken. Gevaarlijk lijkt het in ieder geval niet. Eerder nieuwsgierig. Kunt U hier wijs uit? GOPI is ook op zaterdag en zondag aanwezig!

Sjors Smit

Naar aanleiding van een ruimtelijke interventie die Sjors Smit heeft ondergaan tijdens een reis naar Leipzig, gaat hij aan de slag met een performance die zich richt op het personaliseren van het object, en de objectivering van het persoon. Hij gaat verschillende objecten in een broek of ander kledingstuk hijsen en deze te confronteren met hun ‘zijn’. De nadruk ligt op het zichtbaar maken van de onafscheidelijkheid tussen mens en object.

Valerie Saoirse

doet dingen op haar eigen manier. Eigenwijs? Dat kun je wel stellen. Zij houdt niet van regels en vertrouwt op haar eigenzinnigheid. Ritme in teksten vindt zij het belangrijkst waarbij zij zelf de regie in handen houdt. Laat haar je meenemen in haar gedachtegangen waar haar overtuigingen, fantasieën en inspiratiebronnen zich een plek naar buiten wurmen.

Marc Elisabeth is een mannelijk zoogdier van de planeet aarde. De fotograaf/schrijver dient fictieve werelden op met prachtige mislukkingen en vruchtbare nutteloosheid, in de vorm van grimmige humor en absurdisme.

Lise Sore

Het verstillen van een moment met emotie. Bevriezing van de tijd, om het ongrijpbare tastbaar te maken. Lise Sore houdt zich bezig met verbinding zoeken. Deze zoektocht begint onherroepelijk bij haarzelf. In haar zoektocht naar intimiteit zet Sore woorden, installaties en performances in om de ander duidelijk te maken dat er een verlangen is naar bevestiging en de universele wens om ‘gehoord’ te worden.

Kasper van Tol

Kasper van Tol creëerde een alter ego, genaamd John Doe; een buitenaards wezen die de wereld vervormd ziet en alles met bewondering aanschouwt. John Doe is een vreemdeling voor de wereld die probeert mee te gaan met de stroming van de samenleving. De vraag die hij stelt is: Hoe verbonden zijn we met onszelf? Van Tol presenteert een combinatie van videowerken en performance.

Zij dragen vaderschap voor groep-gedreven performances. De tengels trekken krom, Geen uitweg, geen correctie. Stoot je drankje alvast maar om. | De grond wacht ook op u.

Rowan van As

De gemiddelde mens die uit de kast komt, komt uit de, wel… kast. Maar Rotterdammer Rowan van As komt uit de vuilnisbak! Respect! Zijn aubades worden vertolkt op trompet, piano of accordeon, maar net zo lief knutselt hij met spullen uit zijn directe omgeving een instrument in elkaar. Het idee? Je woonruimte is net zo goed een kunstwerk. Op zijn naam staan de Mosselpiano en de Oscarprullenbak. Ook speelt hij soms het thema van Pipi Langkous. Sunny side up!

Bij het BUTFF heeft zij een interactieve performance met de titel ‘Het Ruimtemeisje’. Verbaast over alle onbekende objecten en wezens op aarde, gaat het ruimtemeisje op onderzoek uit.

Zij trad al twee keer eerder op bij het BUTFF. Twee keer met een genieuze curieuze circusact. Dit keer gaat zij waarschijnlijk aan de gang met een chirurgisch nietpistool. Een jurk van zijde modelleert zij direct op haar huid!?

Jessie Depressie is een Nederlandse Drag Queen die via kleinkunst en drag een verhaal verteld over identiteit, zelfbeeld en het anders zijn. “Doormiddel van zelfgeschreven liedjes en monologen probeert ze haar omgeving te duiden, maar is zelf ook vooral nog erg verward.”

Er gaat een hardnekkig maar ijl gerucht door Nederland. Hardnekkig omdat het gerucht al sinds mensenheugenis bestaat. IJl omdat weinigen van het gerucht weet hebben. Een goed bewaard geheim waarover men liever niet praat. Waar men zelfs liever niet aan denkt. Het Gerucht wordt de laatste jaren vaker waargenomen. Kun je het navertellen dan praat je er liever niet over. Dan doe je slechts de mond half-open en schraap je de keel, want slechts een gerucht is je al te veel…

BUT-ART ALIEN-NATION – exhibition

Find yourself on a journey through the maze of life; step into the unknown Alien Nation that is more familiar then you think at first. After a successful collaboration between KOP and BUT Film Festival last year, we are once again joining the festival with our exhibition ALIEN-NATION. As a part of the BUT Film Festival, KOP Foundation shows various artists who investigate alienation in daily life, as well as unknown worlds or concepts like parallel universes. Roos Janssen (student Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam) selected works of various young artists that will be shown in the stairwells that lead to the movie theaters at the BUT Film Festival as well as the Chassé theater near cinema room 3. Imke Zeinstra

Imke Zeinstra is een performance artiest. Haar werk wordt gekenmerkt door het fysieke gebruik van haar eigen lichaam. Materiaal- en kledingkeuze speelt hierbij ook een grote rol. After many years, a man and his daughter are the only survivors.
