Dear Reader, Welcome to the BUT Film Festival! Before you lies the booklet for the 13th edition of our international five-day festival, the result of a year’s hard and dedicated work of ourproduction-, programming- and promotion-teams and our volunteers. We already contacted Bruce LaBruce back in January. He is a filmmaker with an irresistible BUT-factor – always uncompromising and true to himself - whose recent work we have showed at previous editions of our festival. This year, we will screen his early work, accompanied by his personal introductions, Q&A’s and a masterclass. With the aid of our sponsors (see last page), we managed to not only bring around fifty feature length and numerous short film screenings to the Netherlands this year, but – for the first time - the music & performance program will add its own five day festival to the lively city of Breda. 10 was a party, 11 is carnival, 12 was a dozen, but 13 is a rebellious teen on the verge of breaking out, ready to kick the holy cow. Driven by the urge to promote underground film and deviant art forms we gave our very best. The Dutch film festival for B-movies, Underground & Trash Films! For five days, this is the home of films packed with violence, absurdity, creativity and corny stuff! We are looking for visitors who... : • do not immediately start screaming at the sight of a drop of blood! • can appreciate creativity to the absurd! • can perfectly combine cosiness with watching films! At this festival, we exclusively screen B-movies, Undergound & Trash films, or, in other words, BUT films. Films whose quality does not depend on expensive special effects, high quality acting or a slick story, but rather on the unconventional. Unconventional in terms of form, technique or content. In short, there’s no place where you can experience the average BUT film the way you do at our festival!

B-movies (Low Budge t movies) are created as a by-produ ct of the Hollywood studio system and have develope d into their own genre/type. Undergrou nd films are controvers ial films that push the limits of the permissi ble, often linked to a scene or a city. Trash films are cheap, in -house, often made with limited re sources.

BUT Square In between the screenings of the many cult classics and new BUT films, we offer a unique side program at the BUT Square. The program varies daily and tries to stimulate your sensors and senses creatively. This includes music and poetry performances, games to watch and play, art exhibitions, et cetera, so quickly browse forward for more info!

Catering

Getting hungry from watching all that blood, murder and terror? No worries, every day there will be a different caterer to keep the meals varied and your hunger satisfied. In a hurry to see a movie? Make a quick stop at our super sandwich bar.

BUT & BEERS

This year we have DAB on tap and a special selection of bottled beers. Every day we serve a different draft beer from a local brewery, namely Ramses, Bliksem, Hill Devils and Witte Anker. On top of that, our own brewer has brewed two special BUT-beers for your fine taste BUTs called: Kwakzalver and Hozen Füller. Presentation of the BUT Beers on Thursday around 18:30h at the Square.

Signage

Unfortunately, ten people reportedly went missing last year because of the confusing signage around our festival. This year we have made huge improvements and placed banners on top of the tents to make everything more clear. So if you get lost this time, it’s not our fault.

DJ’s

In between movies there are the unique sets of the DJ’s to entertain you while you are eating or enjoying the art and games around the square. So eat, dance and enjoy!

Guests BUTFF 2018 Guest of Honor- Bruce LaBruce We are honored to welcome this Canadian filmmaker who is considered one of the primary filmmakers of the New Queer Cinema Movement that emerged in America in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In contrast to directors like Todd Haynes, Gus van Sant and Gregg Araki - all of them exponents of the New Queer Cinema - Bruce LaBruce never entered the mainstream and always kept his ‘BUT factor’. His sexually explicit films are politically potent a well. Bruce LaBruce wants to kick sacred cows and in his films he lets different ‘-isms’ collide: feminism meets sexism, Marxism meets fascism, as well as themes like racism, transgenderism, neo-Nazism, radicalism and hedonism. The political and philosophical context of Bruce LaBruce’s work contrasts with a playful sexuality in which he explores social taboos, including BDSM (No Skin Off My Ass)

and sexuality among the elderly (Gerontophilia). All this in a creative film language, revolving around style experiment and the pleasure of lowbudget filmmaking. We will show an overview of his earlier work, combined with extended Q and A’s. A combi ticket for all Bruce LaBruce screenings is available on the website.

Special Guest Bloody Belgium Roland Lethem crushing normative boundaries and taboos and attempting to confront the viewer with his deepest fears and wishes. Lethem’s work is renowned in academic circles, but also caters well to lovers of genre cinema, erotic cinema and experimental art.

Experimental filmmaker Roland Lethem was inspired by the surrealists (Jean Cocteau, Luis Buñuel) and the Japanese New Wave Nuberu Bagu (Koji Wakamatsu, Seijun Suzuki) to make disturbing, poetic cinema,

His films include the infamous Bandes de Cons (1970), the erotic poetic film Les Souffrances d’un Oeuf Meurtri (1967) and the experimental erotic film Marylin’s Last Love Song (1976), a film that could potentially be shown infinitely in a loop. BUT will screen a selection of Lethem’s long and shorter work, in the presence of the director himself.

unBUTtoned: Theme BUTFF 2018 Every year, BUTFF tries to revive an important part of the B-movie industry with its theme. It has a leading role, for which inspiration is found in the classics of the film industry. Film history has many examples of new trends being introduced. Looking back, you could say that some of these films still affect and determine today’s film language. We’re living in an age in which posters of kissing men created by capitalist multinationals are newsworthy, in which people beat each other up over terms like ‘gender neutral’ and in which talk shows and online commentary sections are filled with people complaining about the increased numbers of homosexuals, transgenders and lesbians on TV, while other people complain that the LGBTQIA-community is still not visible enough. We live in an age in which sex can be found anywhere, in all shapes and sizes, while at the same time being banished to the sidelines with the age-old motto: ‘Just act normal’. In a schizophrenic society, it is up to art to offer reflection, shake up the morals and break conventions in a playful way. As embracing a diverse sexuality has always been a major exponent of B-, Underground and Trash culture, BUT deemed it necessary in these times to undo those top buttons, throw those bare legs in the air and celebrate erotica in all its different guises. This is done the playful BUT way, by showing (gay and straight) erotic classics, illustrious feature films about the LGBTQIA community,

cheerful films and documentaries about sexual taboos and kinks, and a sidebar program filled with performances and poetry with an erotic touch. Disarming films as well as razor-sharp ones. Playful and cheerful films, but also films with a dark edge and cynical pinpricks. As is befitting of good sex (and BUT), a bit thrilling, a bit naughty, a bit playful, maybe even a bit dangerous, but always satisfying..! BUTRR BUTRR (pronounced as Butterrr) is a collaboration between the BUTFF and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival (Bruges). Each year, both festival directors challenge one another to ‘color outside the lines’ with the BUTRR selection. Concretely, this means that programmers select films for each other’s festival under the denominator BUTRR. BUT Light Obviously, BUTFF is the most fun when you are with lots of friends. In other words: fill up the car and come see us! Unfortunately, someone always has to make the sacrifice of being the BOB (Dutch for the one who hasn’t drunk any alcoholic beverages and serves as the designated driver). And to make sure that this person isn’t afraid to drive home after a few films, we have put together a BUT Light selection. This means a selection which is not too heavy or too intense and almost free of blood. Okay, 2% at most. But don’t worry, for a bit of devilish delight at the beginning of the evening doesn’t hurt at all. Check the descriptions of the films from the BUT Light selection for further information.

BUTFF Shorts Marathon The blocks of shorts are a wildly popular part of the BUT Film Festival and therefore always sold out. That’s why we’re offering anyone who missed out another chance to see the shorts in Block 1, 2, 3 and 4 on a relaxed Sunday afternoon. We challenge game design veterans and NOOBS to break all boundaries and develop a game worthy of the BUT quality mark. Surf & Turf: The most bizarre underground film festival of the Netherlands, the BUT Film Festival, asked us if we could program their Thursday evening. Of course we couldn’t say no! The theme of the festival is unBUTtoned, so the question was whether we knew bands who radiate that explosion of SEX, ENERGY AND SWEAT...with a bit of dirt. We immediately said: OF COURSE! That’s our specialty! In fact, the line-up for this edition is so spot on, we cannot wait for the already legendary Thursday night: a night where you drink too much beer and wake up in the morning to a walrus with a little pink dress...

Charlie & Lesbians

The

Currently one of the hardest live acts on Dutch stages. If you do not know them yet, you have to be deeply ashamed. TIP: Put on your elbow protectors and your helmet! Going broke is not an option!

Music Program Black Metal Friday Hellevaerder

We are Hellevaerder, an atmospheric black metal band from North Holland. We will storm through 2018 like a raging hurricane, be warned! Soon you will enjoy our musical frenzy. Until the future, friends!

Noctambulist Noctambulist was formed in November 2016 by friends and roommates Sam C.A. (exDiscreator), Mitchell Scheerder (Treurwilg), J.D. Kaye (Purest of Pain) and Stef Heesakkers (Treurwilg). Noctambulist combines the rawness of black metal with atmospheric post-rock/ punk passages. The band prefers to write lyrics in Dutch, due to the subject matter hitting closer to home.

Abysmal Darkening

Blackened Doom Metal from the Netherworld. A group of hell-sent individuals evoked ‘Abysmal Darkening’ to create a new form of audio-sonic terror. This is best described as ‘Darkened Doom Metal’. Not Doom the way it is known, but utterly depressing, slow, torturing metal.

Draugur

We are Draugur, orthodox Satanic Black Metal. From the darkest pits of the third dimension the demons rise, called by rituals of blood and sin, in the name of Lucifer. Draugur is fierce, devastating, full of dark power and occult atmosphere, carried by tremendous melody and skill.

Countess

Countess is a Dutch band that has been unleashing metal music upon the world since 1992. Over the course of 25 years and 15 full-length albums, Countess’ sound has evolved from the raw black metal of the early releases towards a more traditional heavy metal-influenced style.

Siren’s Carcass

Found stranded on a beach during high tides, Siren’s Carcass quickly knew how to adapt to our world. They developed a very early interest in putrefying odors and the strange noises that accompany them, and invested in their talents by collecting old and broken toys in the garbage. Voorwoord Als MC van het BUT Film Festival richt ik graag het woord tot u. ‘UnBUTtoned’ is het thema van de 13e editie. BUT richt zich dit jaar op de gestaag uitdijende gemeenschap die wordt vervat in het acroniem LGBTQIASPMAVZTFMBW. Girls who are boys, who like boys to be girls, who do boys like they’re girls, who do girls like they’re boys & all that jazz. Naast een massa films en bands die aansluiten bij het thema (of niet, want het blijft BUT) zijn er ook dit jaar weer woordkunstenaars en performers. Op donderdag de dichters, op vrijdag het jongvolk, op zaterdag en zondag de gepokte & gemazelde. Misschien denkt u in het geval van B-films, Underground en Trash niet gelijk aan het label ‘kwaliteit’. Maar er is in de loop der jaren een ‘BUT seal of approval’ ontstaan: (ongeschreven) criteria voor wat een artistieke uiting BUT-waardig maakt. Hoe queer is de eenzame dichter die kromgebogen over zijn tekst tegen de wind in een verbale scheet laat & all that jazz. Tot besluit de aanvalsslogans voor deze 13e editie. Allereerst: toon de inhoud van je broek, ook al is die zoek! Ten tweede: Heb jij je geslacht al geslecht? Tot slot: knoopjes & trossen los! Was getekend, MC BUThead

Jacco Weener Bach en BUT, gaat dat eigenlijk wel samen? Hoe BUT is Bach en zo nee, wat kun je eraan doen? Om op die vragen een antwoord te geven, hebben we een Rotterdammer gevraagd. Dan zit je altijd goed. Jacco Weener is een (performance-, beeldend en theologisch) kunstenaar. Hij is bekend als vertolker van liederen van diva’s als Bach, Schubert en Puccini. Ook maakt hij boekjes over (meestal) volkse onderwerpen en is hij improvisatiedanser. Op het BUT Film Festival brengt hij een stuk uit de Matthäus Passion. Na een enerverende opening is het tijd om de beentjes los te gooien. Op de dansvloer blijkt pas echt hoe queer de medemens is! Knoop los wat vast zit, dans de brokken uit je keel, het vuur uit je queere kont. Wie kan de strapatsen van Leptomania Bhangra Fever weerstaan? Dit project van Leptomania Art Movement (L*A*M since 1991) is een streling voor oor én oog. Ze wagen zich aan crossovers die anderen niet eens durven bedenken. Schaamteloos mixen ze Indonesische Dangdut muziek met westerse Jungle en videosamples uit Oldskool Indo-exploitation films. Of klassieke Bollywoodtunes met jaren ‘50 Las Vegas GRIND-muziek op beelden uit Bollywoodfilms en Oldskool Burlesque. Ga d’r maar aan staan! Donderdag 30 augustus Miksi Brouwer

Von Solo

Miksi is expert in kofferdichten en valiesrijm. Ze reist in 2018 door Europa met werk in verschillende talen. Soms is het vooral brabbeltaal, als de whisky te hard vloeit. Miksi loopt graag over verlaten straten en omineus overgroeide kerkhoven om inspiratie op te doen, maar dat betekent niet dat haar poëzie grimmig is. Daarnaast houdt ze van redundante adjectieven.

‘Von Solo is de Jeff Koons van de vaderlandse poëzie!’ (P. Wolff). Rotterdammer Von Solo is actiepoëet, columnist en cineast. In zijn poëzie gaat het om beleven en beleefd worden. Hij is een neo-beatnik, als een stormram van vlees op weg naar de heilige jachtvelden van de poëzie. Daarbij laat hij een spoor van verontwaardiging, ontkenning en extase achter. In 2012, 2013 en 2015 nam hij deel aan de halve finales van het NK Poetry Slam. In zijn vrije tijd maakt hij kortfilms, zoals ‘Dood aan de Powezie’ (2013) en ‘The adventures of Gershard Coxxx, Rotterdam Porn Poet’ (2017).

HexenSpeller

Noem meneer Goldman maar HexenSpeller. Overal tovert hij moeiteloos een chaotische storm van absurde woordkunst tevoorschijn. Maar het is meer dan alleen poëzie en spoken word, een betere omschrijving zou zijn: DichtTerreur en Performance Art. De illusies van HexenSpeller zijn duister en lichtvoetig, wild en komedisch. Vrijdag is traditiegetrouw de dag waarop jonge dichters en performers een kans krijgen zich te tonen aan het BUT-publiek. Wij hebben ze gevraagd eens grondig te reflecteren op het menselijk geslacht, hun eigen geslacht en wat er verder nog zoal kan worden geslacht. Ehâ&#x20AC;Ś okĂŠ, zijn niet allemaal even jong. We mixen graag. Te zien en te horen zijn: Andree van Gastel, Jolijn Durinck, Krist den Dekker, Ditmar Bakker en Lian Boeren.

Zsa Zsa

Zsa Zsa komt op herhaling! De pas afgestudeerde kunstenares staat te popelen om haar vrijheid te omarmen en de wereld te verrijken met haar kleurrijke performances. Hoe zal ze dit keer verschijnen? Als wc-juffrouw? Als cactus madam? Of meet ze zich weer een nieuw alter ego aan?

Bij Ronald Bal staan de interactie tussen individuen en de wisselwerking tussen lichaam en omgeving centraal. Hij choreografeert nieuwe, onverwachte verbindingen tussen personen, materialen en ruimtes. Het lichaam tast de omgeving af en herinterpreteert. Het verloop is afhankelijk van de reactie van de toeschouwer, die een actieve rol speelt in zijn werk. Bal woont en werkt in Rotterdam.

Mario van Megen

Mario van Megen bedenkt concepten, schrijft gedichten, tekent, schildert en performt. Het liefst zoekt hij tijdens zijn performances het publiek op, waarbij hij dagelijkse zaken in een verrassend daglicht zet. Wat normaliter onopgemerkt blijft weet hij te erotiseren en absurd te maken. Dus als je denkt: wat is toch dat verrassende daglicht? – dan is het Mario!

Jitse Verschueren

Naakt zullen wij de naakte Christus volgen! Als dat geen binnenkomer is! Jitse Verschueren is een troubadour uit de toekomst. In woord en lied verbindt hij het komische met het filosofische, het volkse met het verhevene, de rozen met de pisbloemen, de onzin met de waarheid. Hij groet U!

But the deal that went down in the alley of Off, near the Jumbo and Bruno’s Button Store, was one that was forgotten really quickly, actually. Not too fast, not too slow, but quite efficiently alright. When the left-nippleless-tit exchanged hands for the brie, both parties suddenly left. Last year circus performer Lisa Chudalla surprised us with her act in a so called ‘Cyr Wheel’, a simple, oversized steel wheel. Only a handful of people saw that act. Pity! But she’s back, this time accompanied by Charlie Hession. Actually we don’t know what to expect of the industrious duo, but our hearts are full of expectation! Will something be unBUTtoned? And if so, what?

Joes Adriaansens

Joes Adriaansens is een opkomende performancekunstenaar met een fascinatie voor de formaliteiten binnen de kunstwereld. Zo vraagt hij zich bijvoorbeeld af waarom kunstenaars altijd in 3e persoon over zichzelf schrijven. Tijdens BUT 2018 is hij performer, galeriehouder en perverseling ineen. Hij knoopt maar wat graag het een en ander los om je een blik te gunnen op anderen. Vergeet wat je wist over Kunst, kUNST en dick pics, en zoek naar de viezerik in de regenjas.

Rowan van As De gemiddelde mens die uit de kast komt, komt uit de, wel… kast. Maar Rotterdammer Rowan van As komt uit de vuilnisbak! Respect! Zijn aubades worden vertolkt op trompet, piano of accordeon, maar net zo lief knutselt hij met spullen uit zijn directe omgeving een instrument in elkaar. Het idee? Je woonruimte is net zo goed een kunstwerk (het schijnt een heersende tendens in de Rotterdamse underground te zijn). Op zijn naam staan de Mosselpiano en de Oscarprullenbak. Een oude stoel wordt een geluidsassemblage met krijsende meeuwen. Ook speelt hij soms het thema van Pippi Langkous. Sunny side up!

Jolanda Jansen

Winner of last year’s BUT Performance Award! Jolanda likes to work with paper. “A body is harder to transform than paper, that’s why I like to use paper. It can be strong and fragile like a feather. I prefer to bring it back to its basic nature, something that was alive, coming from the wood of a majestic tree,” she says.

In 2009 she was selected to participate in a mentoring program and worked with the famous performer Ulay. She showed her videos and performances in Taipei, Basel, Berlin, Oslo, Venice, Warsaw, New York and Moscow (amongst others!). And now she’s in Breda. Ga d’r maar aan staan… She will also be presenting this year’s BUT Performance Award to her successor.

EXHIBITION ‘SEXP When a collaboration is successful it needs to continue… so, once again, BUTFF and KOP have joined forces. This time KOP will arrange an exhibition that’s perfectly in style with this year’s BUTFF theme. The exhibition focuses on gender and sexuality, as we’re quite focused on those kind of topics nowadays. Last year there was the #MeToo campaign which hit many industries, including fine arts. John William Waterhouse’s Hylas and the Nymphs was removed from a museum because of its negative portrayal of women. This resulted in the question: ‘Can nudity be part of art and how far do we go in revealing nakedness?’ We already noticed many artists asking the same question and researching this ‘explicit’ content. KOP walks in naughty shoes and finds artists who like to explore the boundaries of sexuality through fine arts. We selected a number of delicate artists who aren’t afraid to show their opinion about sexuality. Their delectable work will be presented by KOP, curated by Michelle van der Poel and for sale during BUTFF. All for an exotic price.

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (2018) Sonny Laguna, Tommy Wiklund, USA/UK, 84 min, English The newest entry in the (extremely) long-running Puppet Master series is easily the best, thanks to a screenplay by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk) and a cast of cult actors, including Barbara Crampton and Udo Kier. Nazi puppets murder a bunch of minorities, but the gay, black, Jewish and Asian victims have had it and fight back in this gory, inventive and playful horror comedy.
