Every year we get bigger and better! Filmmakers from all over the world have sent in their movies and we worked hard to select the best movies this year for your viewing pleasure!

And do not be afraid, because in spite of our growth, the festival will never be held for commercial reasons. No, we are committed to providing the alternative, the daring, the crazy with a stage - for your enjoyment! And yes, we are still as stubborn and pigheaded as ever, to the extent that the Dutch Film Fund consider this one of our strongest points. Hurray!

And to further tickle your senses, we are expanding this year with the world of alternative games and bring you, in collaboration with NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, our very first BUT Game Jam and Game Cave!

Five days long, it’s the home of films packed with violence, absurdity, creativity and corny stuff!

We are looking for visitors who...: • do not immediately start screaming over a drop of blood!

• can appreciate creativity to absurd levels!

• can perfectly combine conviviality with watching films!

For at this festival, we exclusively screen B-movie, Underground & Trash films, or, in other words, BUT films. Films of which the quality does not depend on expensive special effects, high quality acting or a slick story, but rather on the unconventional. Unconventional in terms of form, technique or content. In short, there’s no place where you experience the average BUT film the way you do at our festival!

Guests BUTFF 2017 Signage Unfortunately, ten people reportedly went missing last year because of the confusing signage around our festival. This year we have made huge improvements, placing banners on top of the tents to make everything more clear. So if you get lost this time, it’s not our fault.

Between the screenings of the many cult classics and new BUT films, we offer a unique side program at the BUT square which varies daily and tries to stimulate your sensors and senses in a creative way. This includes music and poetry performances, games to watch and play, art exhibitions, et cetera, so quickly browse forward for more info!

DJs In between movies you can enjoy the DJs with their unique set to entertain you while you eat or enjoy the art and games around the square. So eat, dance and enjoy!

Catering Getting hungry from watching all that blood, murder and terror? No worries, everyday there will be a different caterer to keep the meals varied and your hunger satisfied.

Guest of Honor Richard Stanley

from all around the world, all considered with an open mind. We will show an overview of his work, including short films and documentaries, combined with extended Q and As. Special Guest Bloody Belgium Steve de Roover Steve de Roover is the director of Forgotten Scares, a documentary focused on the often maligned and forgotten Flemish horror movies. He will be in attendance for our Bloody Belgium Night to introduce his comprehensive documentary and to share some stories from the horror scene in his country.

Idiosyncratic South-African director Richard Stanley is most well known for his two feature length horror films, Hardware and Dust Devil.

Both have become cult classics in their own right, and have blended elements from the (spaghetti) western with horror. Post-apocalyptic horror in the case of Hardware, and the monster movie in the case of Dust Devil. After those two brilliant features, he tried his hand at a Hollywood movie, The Island of Dr. Moreau, but it ultimately failed. The harrowing and hilarious stories from the set are the subject of the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley. After a long silence Stanley returned with a vengeance, focusing on short genre movies and feature length non-fiction-movies.

Each year, the BUT Awards are presented by a specially composed jury. The jury comprises people who know what BUT films are and have a long-standing association with the genre. This year’s jury is:

Emiel Kampen (NL) - Owner of Prrrpl (Purrple), has a master’s degree in art and technology and over ten years of experience. Emiel teaches about and creates small, simple, sexy and unique games that make you Prrr!

Tinam Bordage (FR) - Founder of the website Sadique master, after the creation of a virtual festival.

Maarten Boot (NL) - Considers himself an animator. You might know him as the artist for the game Kingdom: New Lands. He’s also a BUT Film Festival veteran and will be judging the games on art as well as a healthy/sickening dose of BUTness!

Marjan Westbroek (NL) - Senior editor and film journalist for Schokkend Nieuws Magazine & producer of short movie Zombeer, and assistant-producer for modern ‘Nederhorror’ classic De Poel.

Ari Deelder (NL) - Actress and director of the short film Niks Tegen Kees. Ari made her first feature film Toegetakeld door de Liefde in 2013.

Wrong Fu: Theme BUTFF 2017

BUTRR

Every year, BUTFF tries to revive an important part of the B-movie industry with its theme. The theme has a leading role, where Inspiration is found in classics of the industry. Film history has many examples where we can see new trends being introduced. Looking back, you could say that some of these films still affect film language of today.

BUTRR (pronounced butterrr) is a collaboration between the BUTFF and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival (Bruges). Each year both festival directors challenge one another to ‘color outside the lines’ with the BUTRR selection. Concretely, this means that programmers select films for each other’s festivals under the denominator BUTRR.

The 2017 WRONG FU theme has a broader scope than just Kung Fu movies: it also includes the over the top martial art movies with the most bizarre stories. Since the 20s, filmmakers have been trying to exploit the Chinese martial arts movies. After the popularity of the Kung Fu madness in the 70s, filmmakers did everything to further exploit the genre, mixing it with humor, sex and horror, with hilarious results.

Even Dracula does not escape the fatal blows!

Our extensive program brings an homage to this unforgettable period.

This means a selection which is not too heavy or too intense and is almost free of blood. Okay, at most a limit of 2%. But don’t worry, for at the beginning of the evening a bit of devilish delight doesn’t hurt at all. Check the descriptions of the films from the BUT Light selection for more information.

BUT Light Obviously, the BUTFF is the most fun when you are with a lot of friends; in other words: fill up the car and drive away! Unfortunately, there’s always someone who’s got bad luck, because you’ll need a BOB (the Dutch for the one who hasn’t drunk any alcoholic beverages and serves as designated driver). And to prevent that after a few films, this person doesn’t dare to drive home anymore, we have put together a BUT Light selection.

The biggest alternative film festival in the Netherlands is expanding with the introduction of the BUT Game Jam! In collaboration with NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, we challenge game developers to release all boundaries and develop a BUT-worthy game within 43 hours without a target group in mind, but to choose a more personal, instinctive and/or humor based approach.

Come join us for a celebration of BUT games! In the BUT Game Cave you’ll find our hand-picked favorite games that represent the weird and wonderful values of the BUT Festival and Wrong Fu. Bring your friends, and get ready for games of crazy competition and wrongful rampage.

Playable games: • Gang Beasts – Take on the form of a fighting jelly-man and squash, grind and crush your opponents to win!

• Genital Jousting – Party game about flaccid penises and wiggly anuses.

• Hotline Miami – Raw brutality, hard-boiled gunplay and skull crushing close combat.

You know the drill: you’re watching an old action flick. The fights are awesome, but as soon as the characters open their mouths, you cringe so hard, you almost pull a muscle.

You can do better than that! And now you can prove it! We have made a selection of four clips from different Kung Fu movies and removed the sound. It’s your mission to record your own killer Kung Fu scene. You can improvise or prepare (the clips will be on the Facebook pages of BUTFF and Red Asylum), on your own or with a team. The five funniest, filthiest and most original contestants get a free ticket to the movie “...”, where the DUB-FU! champion will be announced.

Ever wondered how lightsaber effects were created for the original Star Wars trilogy? Yes? And do you want to have that explained by a professional sound engineer professor and his growling luchador? Join our hilarious Sound FX Editing Workshop, and afterwards, you’re able to make special effects you never thought you’d make, especially from the buttocks.

The Sex Organs Here are The Sex Organs! Intergalactic sex ‘n’ roll from outer space!

A primitive trash garage space odyssey! The Sex Organs were formed in 2014, played their debut show at the legendary Funtastic Dracula Carnival in Spain and immediately became a cult act!

Dressed as gigantic male and female sex organs, they play wild, sweaty trash and roll, sending the listener into an explosive climax song after song! This is as primitive as it gets - stand-up drum kit, a guitar and infectious lyrics about the sexual condition of the modern times we live in!

Using many film fragments and household products you will see how the Sound FX for history’s most famous scenes were created! So prepare to laugh, be amazed and to rediscover the techniques of movie making!

Thursday Night Rock ’n Roll Bands Surf Trash Boogie The Experimental Tropic Blues Band Raw, primitive blues-punk but most of all a total surrender to rock ‘n roll! These tireless globetrotters have been raging on the stages of Europe and the USA for more than ten years, with the same passion and unpredictability. With their upcoming documentary Spit’n’Split - The Experimental Tropic Blues Band, which will be featured at our festival, we just couldn’t resist inviting them over to rock the house! So get that combo-ticket for the full experience!

After party with Megathrive A local artist that makes music on a Gameboy using a unique blend of catchy melodies and pounding beats to get your feet moving.

This young chiptune violence from Breda has seen a local stage before at the (former-)Boulevard and after this BUT-fest he will be back after several international shows.

Get ready to move on those ’89 Gameboy sounds.

Fake Billy & The False Prophets A name that creates as many questions as expectations, and that’s exactly the way Fake Billy likes it. Raw energy, strong songs and catchy hooks. Their first performance at 05:30 at some trash-party ended in blood next to the toilet and sweat dripping down the walls.

Since then cellars, bars and festivals have ensured Fake Billy & The False Prophets developed into a razor sharp band with a tight garagetrash-rock ‘n roll sound. A sleazy evening with swinging hips and fists in the air. Drop your pants and start dancing.

Music Program FRIDAY Black Metal Friday Fenris Established in the Netherlands in 1997, Fenris has a long history of combining thunderous Viking metal with scorching black/death metal.

At times blindingly fast, sometimes atmospheric, but always melodic and dynamic. With strong roots in Nordic and Germanic mythology, and some of the lyrics in their mother tongue, the mood set is that of ancient peoples, their hopes and beliefs and their wars and hardships.

Black Command For the past years, The Netherlands have been fertile ground for qualitative and innovative black metal, Black Command being amongst the most promising newcomers to the scene. Their Luciferian black masses have just started to emerge from the underground.

Bloodtomb Summoned in 2013 as a one man project, now a two man band. After the first demo with a full line-up, they created the abomination called Whorled Bestial Perdition. Bloodtomb is ritualistic hatred from the primordial tomb.

Ibex Angel Order Formed from Funeral Goat, Ibex Angel Order is a unity of two individuals that plays black metal. Live appearances are intense and pure, filled with energy and devotion.

A band free of any limitations or preconceived ideas. The lyrics are highly personal, which shows their depth and thoughtfulness. They deal with gnostic writings and other occult scriptures.

Shaolin Barz An evening dedicated to underground hip hop! Regional artists performing the old school underground sound with raw beats and 90s Boom Bap. Get ready Breda, hip hop is dominating again and this evening is going to be an experience you’ve never experienced before!

new single Naast Me (produced by BigNutzBeatz), he is on his way to become a legendary veteran.

Red Ribbon Army In 2012, Broes Weeyn, Dat Guy, Monk and Jonasty were the heroes of the Limburg province hip hop scene with their video Save De Dag. The Red Ribbon Army took you back to the ‘Fresh Prince’ 90s. With the audio production of Sneadr, the scratches of Vieze Vingerz and camera editing of Simon Bus, they scored many respectable eyes. They played on ‘Boogiedown’, participated in the ‘Great Prize of the Netherlands’ and stood at ‘Brrrap’ and ‘Definition of Hiphop’ in 013.

And now they’re back with that 90s vibe we all love, with their album Interracial released on September 30, 2016.

Jobbo Ft BobbyDeBeatbakker A rap duo from Brabant who are working hard at their debut. With a jazzy and soulful sound in a 90s fur coat, they are ready to tell their story to the audience. Lend them your ear and go on a journey through their vision.

Reazy Get ready for Reazy and his funky intro with all the classics from the 80s, 90s and raw tree baps scratching under his turntable needle. And to top it off some butter smooth R&B records by famous and less famous artists from the culture that we call hip hop!

GyverStyle With their hardcore beats, tough as nails lyrics, turntablism and an exceptional level of freestyle improvisation rap, GyverStyle have energized many crowds with their shows. As a highlight, McGyver, Rickz & Didier gained national fame being a part of the 30xPi tour of Grandmaster Def P (Osdorp Posse).

The crew, from the province of Brabant, also performed in 2016 as support act of world-class rappers such as Public Enemy, KRS-One, Movits!, MOP, Doppelgangaz and

Vin Arge As his beat conquers like a French colony, Vin Arge’s voice flows and relaxes like a Dutch reggae band.

Alternative hip hop at its best, keeping it quirky, genius and crazy at the same time. Named ‘Rookie of the Year’ by Diggy Dex, but with several shows last year at ‘To The Max’, including Woo Hah! and his

Mr. Lif. In 2017, they’re working on a new LP with a second turntablist (DJ NoLogo) and live beat maker (Ducaz).

Zappa zunday The FoolZ They enthusiastically make their own interpretations of Frank Zappa’s music. Their repertoire is mainly drawn from the 80’s, with multi-voice vocals and the proverbial Zappa guitar solos. The Foolz play regularly for the Dutch section of the Zappateers, and have twice been on the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan in Germany. It is remarkable that non-Zappa experts also appreciate this band: not for Zappa ears only!

Azumi DJ Azumi will make her debut as one of Breda’s most fierce DJ ladies.

She will take care of the after hours after the live acts. What she will be turning is another mystery, but behold for yourself. You do not want to miss this! One hour full of BUT-Urban sounds!

VJ Eigengeis The visuals are taken care of by VJ Eigengeis. This dreaded warrior from Breda is one master of obscure video art. He knows how to intrigue and marvel his victims with an extensive arsenal of moving images without missing a beat. He has left his marks throughout the country, including in the Melkweg, Doornroosje and Paard van Troje. Now the battle goes on at Shaolin Barz and nobody is safe for the bright shades and shiny visuals.

Absolutely Frank A new Frank Zappa tribute band formed by Tal Wilkins (known from Zappatika). Their goal is to bring you the music of Frank Zappa to the best of their abilities. And, of course, have as much fun as possible!

Rydacross Proud to be fout! Dat is een motto waar we bij het BUT Film Festival iets mee kunnen. Bij Rydacross (Ryan Oomen & David Ravivo) kan het alle kanten op. Sterker nog: het gaat ook alle kanten op! In 2016 verscheen hun debuutalbum Welcome to Violence. Met titels als Cooking In The Cancer Kitchen, Merry Hell en Whoregasm weet de goede verstaander (jij!) wat hij kan verwachten. Infantile psychosis galore!

Het 1m2 dichterspodium op de donderdag van het festival is inmiddels traditie. Dit jaar alleen een avondpodium met drie dichters van naam en elk met een zeer stevige eigenwijze profilering.

Tim Albus Tim Albus (Rotterdam- Verdorven Woordenaar) gaat tot op het bot/ But en waar het kan verder. Hij kaapte in 2015 de Poëziebus en claimde een plaats voor een gedicht in de bundel en een podiumplek op menig locatie. Bewerkt overal en nergens zijn boekje en als het kan zijn publiek met een pen als zwaard. Verse ideeën uit zijn leven gegrepen en vers geschreven wat op zijn hart/bord ligt. Het zijn vereeuwigde mo(nu)mentopnamen.

Als man met het boekje ver(r) ast hij menig publiek met weinig woorden. Tim wordt overal achtervolgd door dichters, weent omdat er geen wifi is, en doet aan improtheater. Hij is al eens door

een nepdronken act uit de Kavka gesmeten te Antwerpen. Verder gijzelt hij graag het publiek, sluit ze op en onderwerpt ze aan zijn werk.

De wereld is zijn speeltuin, en met zijn poëzie beleeft hij levenslang de eeuwige jeugd.

Andrew Cartwright (Tilburg) Andrew Cartwright (1966) is Britse Tilburger. Hij is dichter/schrijver/ kunstenaar en heeft deelgenomen aan talloze projecten, tentoonstellingen en performances, waaronder Kunstmaan, Stukafest, Project Baksteen, en L’Avventura Stads­ wandeling. Hij is ook redactielid geweest van literair blad De Titaan en jureert regelmatig bij poëzieslams zoals Tilburg Dichttalent en Podiumvlees. Andrew schrijft zowel in het Engels als het Nederlands, en vaak in een hybride versie van de twee talen. Hij heeft twee bundels gepubliceerd: Een half-pipe voor een mier in 2011 en The Trent Dutchie Translations in 2015.

Gert Vanlerberghe Vanlerberghe (Antwerpen) is dichter en romanschrijver – Als een Ballon (2012), Verdwenen (2015), Nachtprater (te verschijnen in 2017). Presentator en organisator van het Antwerpse poëzie­podium Ballonnenvrees. Zelf staat hij ook in binnen- en buitenland op de planken als dichter en slam poet: van Ieper over Groningen tot Hasselt. Hij reisde mee met de Poëziebus, zat bij Vitalski’s Stand-Up Tragedy en was performer op De Nacht van Pafke en De Nacht van Dada. Ballonnenvrees

verzorgde het poëtische luik van het eerste Antwerpse Fringe Festival.

Hij werkt samen met muzikanten, Melting Time, Tegen Beter Weten In, Veston, en leden van Sukilove. Met Butsenzeller vormt hij het poëtischmuzikale duo Hersencellen. En nog meer, te veel om op te noemen.

Vrijdag 1 september Aan het woord Programma van Lea Theunissen (performer, dichter en beeldend kunstenaar) Speciale BUT-editie!

Vrijdag staat in het teken van net afgestudeerde kunstenaars, studenten en jonge performers. Een ‘Aan het woord’ podium als speciale BUT editie is een project van Lea Theunissen. Wij hebben juist haar uitgenodigd omdat zij bekend is met het performers- en kunstveld.

Van de middag tot aan het begin van de avond stijgen er diverse geluiden op buiten op het festivalplein en van poort naar straat.

Muzikant Arnold is de trigger, performer Levi de kogel en het canvas het target. Onlangs verscheen bij Laterax Records hun debuutplaat, The Shape. Maar The Shape is veel meer dan zomaar een plaatje. Het is ook de naam voor hun show, het artbook en het in asfalt gegoten beeldje. MCHNRY is onnavolgbaar, trots, sexy en van alle markten thuis. Hoe smaakt houtskool? Gewoon komen kijken en proeven!

STILLE PERFORMERS ZATERDAG 2 SEPTEMBER Stille performance art Op zaterdag- en zondagmiddag festivalplein BUTFF. Net als voorgaand jaar hebben wij ook deze BUT stille performers uitgenodigd. Zij duiken ineens op en laten zich gaan.

Joke Olthaar Joke Olthaar (Rotterdam) is theatermaakster, performer en filmmaakster. Zij heeft eerder al diverse keren opgetreden op het BUTFF. Dat was onder meer in 2012 met De Zigeunerin en Beer, een waar succes. In 2013 maakte zij de documentaire Hier is Harry Merry.

Deze werd in 2014 in het Hijgend Hert bij een van de previews van het BUT vertoond met een exclusief optreden door Harry Merry. Dit jaar hebben wij Olthaar gevraagd een stille performance te ontwikkelen.
