Welcome to the 11th B-movie, Underground & Trash Film Festival!

Yes, indeed, edition number 11, the fool’s number. And fools we are with heart and soul at the BUTFF. Already in the early days they considered us fools, when we started our cult video store ‘Next Page’. And even more so when we came up with the idea to organize the first BUT Film Festival in 2006. But as foolish as we are, we’ve been keeping it up with great success for 11 years now and with pleasure we’ll add another 11 years to it. For the biggest lesson of life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.

Even the Dutch Film Fund has discovered this and finally grants us support this year. “With the choice for B-movies, Underground and Trash it contributes to the diversity of the range of films in the Netherlands,” the Dutch Film Fund said. And we all are proud of that, because everybody can err; but only fools persist in their error.

Furthermore, I of course must thank all the team members who were part in making the festival possible.

What, the 11th edition? Am I that old already?

Yes, BUTFF, you indeed are 11 years old. And within this time span you have gone through a lot already. Such as the big move from Electron to the Nieuwe Veste in 2010, the transition from the German DAB beer to the Scheldebrouwerij beer in 2014, John Waters as guest in 2009... Yes BUTFF, you have gone through a lot, but fair is fair, you’ve only improved!

Crucial times As reasonably responsible founders, we have read that between the ages of 11 to 14, each festival will have to endure many difficult developments, both physically, mentally and emotionally. And that may very well be true, for this year we once again are expanding considerably.

This year namely, we have entered into cooperation with theater Chassé Cinema, where we will screen no less than 14 films. In addition, we will organize our first Film & Music Fair on Saturday.

A market full of horror gadgets, vinyl, DVDs, clothes, etc. Also, our guests will be present to hand out autographs at the signing sessions!

In the end, all will be fine BUTFF, let’s be honest, you‘ve always been rebellious, so we have the fullest confidence that we will survive the next phase. And despite the fact that the world has always regarded you as an outsider, we have always been proud of you and hope to enjoy you for many years to come!

Thé film festival of the Netherlands for

Five days long, it’s the home of films packed with violence, absurdity, creativity and corny stuff!

We are looking for visitors who... : • do not immediately start screaming around over a drop of blood!

• can appreciate creativity to the absurd!

• can perfectly combine conviviality with watching films!

For at this festival, we exclusively screen B-movie, Underground & Trash films, or, in other words, BUT films. Films of which the quality does not depend on expensive special effects, high quality acting or a slick story, but rather on the unconventional. Unconventional in terms of form, technique or content. In short, there’s no place where you experience the average BUT film the way you do at our festival!

-movies (Budget-movies) are created as a by-product of the Hollywood studio system and have developed into their own genre / type. nderground films are controversial films that push the limits of the permissible , often linked to a scene or city. rash films are cheap, in-house, often made ​​with limited resources.

BUT square Between the screenings of the many cult classics and new BUT films, we offer a unique side program at the BUT square which varies daily and in a creative way tries to stimulate your sensors and senses. This includes music and poet performances, fashion shows, art exhibitions, et cetera, so quickly browse forward for more info!

And further: This year, Foodguerilla will take care of the catering at the BUTFF. Foodguerrilla is an organization made up of 180 food fighters which is strongly committed to sustainable, but above all healthy food. They do all this biologically or with products saved from food waste, i.e. healthy sustainable food for everyone!

Greystore DJs Playing on the opening night are DJs Rianne & Marthy, both connected to the ‘Greystore’, Breda’s underground vinyl store. They play music from all corners of the world, obscure, worldly and unworldly.

From the ‘50s to today, where they approach the deejaying in the lo-fi down-to-Earth manner. This means playing on an old tube box, whereby they need short breaks to exchange records. Extremely hip! tease please easy freaky tense & Dance DJs: grown into an indispensable phenomenon at the festival square. Programmed this year are: Emile Jonker, Rianne & Marthy, André Peters, DJ Louis, Maikel Veldhuis and Tello Wasiim. A select group of opinionated, nonconformist, original music lovers.

Already now, they are queuing up to weave the wellknown common thread through the festival.

Guests BUTFF 2016 Enzo G. Castellari: Kill them all and come back alone

Ironically enough, Italian director Enzo Girolami (Rome, 1938), better known by his pseudonym Enzo G. Castellari, probably never got so much attention during his career than after the release of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. The film, initially conceived as a remake of Castellari’s splendid B-movie Quel maledetto treno blindato / The Inglorious Bastards (1978).

Unlike his American confrère, Castellari always worked with modest budgets, a limitation which he managed to reverse to his advantage and with which he developed a singular and inimitable style.

In the long series of spaghetti westerns and action films the director made a name for himself with, he virtuously played with the rules of the Italian B-movie: take a successful American production (e.g. The French Connection or Dirty Harry), place the themes and story in an Italian context and add more ultra-realistic violence to it than is seen in the example.

This is how Castellari (helped by a fixed team of employees, such as the unsurpassed cinematographer Giovanni Bergamini and the eminent actor Franco Nero) made his films, ranging from modest successes (Ammazzali tutti e torna solo / Kill Them All and Come Back Alone, 1968) to unexpected blockbusters such as 1990: I Guerrieri del Bronx / 1990: the Bronx Warriors (1982), which even in the USA had cinemas filled up.

Castellari’s best film, also according to him, is the extremely

stylised spaghetti western Keoma (1976), which is therefore screened at BUTFF, introduced by an interview with the director himself. In 2016, Keoma is still an intense movie experience, in which the director raises issues such as racism and incorporates existentialist overtones, but also does not forget to show lyrical violence excesses in slow motion. . (Mike Lebbing) On friday 2 sept 20:30h Mike Lebbing will do a on stage interview with Enzo Castellari. Followed by a special screening of ‘Eagles over London’ shown in 35mm celuloid.

Johan Vandewoestijne Johan Vandewoestijne aka James Desert (Belgium). This cultfilmmaker from Kortrijk is not afraid of some controversy! Best known for his films Lucker the Necrophagous (1986) and Rabid Grannies (1988). Now he is back with his highly anticipated flick Laundry Man (2016). From the looks of the first teaser trailer, this film will surely live up to its expectations.

Johan is already active for over 30 years and to celebrate his work we are going (amongst other things) to show a retrospective of his very best. Also, we will have a good ol’ BUTtalk with the man and there will be opportunity to meet & greet. We know that Johan has a true BUT-spirit, so let us share our passion of film and give him a warm welcome. You know what they say: birds of a feather flock together!

Recently he signed a contract with the Amerikaanse SGL Entertainment for a series of six films of which Laundry Man (2016) is the first. He is also working on the preperation for the second film Soul Copyright. An erotic thriller with Gunter Vanhuyse and Sue Ann Yeoh.

but Jury 2016 Each year, the BUT Awards are presented by a specially composed jury. The jury members comprise people who know what BUT films are and have a long-standing association with the genre. This year’s jury is made up of: Kasper Juhl (Denmark) He is known as the founder of the controversial independent film production company Hellbound Productions, under which flag he has directed, written and produced several horror films. His film Gudsforladt (also known as A God Without a Universe) premiered last year at the Danish film festival CPH PIX and was awarded at the BUT Film Festival that same year with the Best Feature Award.

Jeroen Bijl (The Netherlands) About eight years ago, Jeroen began with his YouTube channel ‘Horrible Reviews’. This channel is mainly dedicated to reviewing all sorts of B-horror, exploitation and cult cinema. Now the channel has over 100,000 subscribers and he continues to provide his viewers with information about both obscure as somewhat more well-known films and filmmakers, in an entertaining and at the same time informative way.

Vanessa Morgan (Belgium) Author/screenwriter Vanessa Morgan is known as the female version of Stephen King. Three of her works (A Good Man, Next to Her, The Strangers Outside) have been adapted for the screen. When she’s not working on her newest book or film script, you can find her at lectures, at international film festivals or photographing cats for her blog Traveling Cats.

CarnEvil: themE BUTFF 2016 Every year, BUTFF tries to revive an important part of the B-movie industry with it’s theme. It has a leading role, where Inspiration is found in the classics in the film industry. The film history has many examples where new trends are being introduced. Looking back, you could say that some of these films still affect and determine the film language of today.

CarnEvil will be the theme of BUTFF 2016: imagine horror circus, grand guignol, scary clowns and above all, the tv-show CARNIVALE. The eleventh edition is the one after the round and perfect number ten. Eleven is the crazy number, the number of the misfit who is ‘one too many’ and doesn’t belong anywhere. This numerical inspiration for the annual Dutch carnival will be the inspiration for our theme: CarnEvil.

butrr BUTRR (pronounced as butterrr) is a collaboration between the BUTFF and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival (Bruges). Each year both festival directors challenge one another to ‘color outside the lines’ with the BUTRR selection.

BUT light Obviously, the BUTFF is the most fun when you are with a lot of friends; in other words: fill up the car and drive away! Unfortunately, someone of course is always the dupe, for that’s the BOB (the Dutch for the one who hasn’t drunk any alcoholic beverages and serves as driver on the way back).

And to prevent that after a few films, this person doesn’t dare to drive home anymore, we have put together a BUT Light selection for these thin-skinned ones.

This means a selection which is not too heavy or too intense and is almost free of blood. Okay, at most a limit of 2%. But don’t worry, for at the beginning of the evening a bit of devilish delight doesn’t hurt at all. Check for further information the descriptions of the films from the BUT Light selection.

Music program Thursday Je Denkt Zeker Dat Je Hardcore Band (NL) Fetch your Aussie training suit out of the wardrobe and unleash the gabber (hardcore music lover) in you. This catchy band from Breda plays epic ‘90s Happy Hardcore classics, but bring them loudly as PUNK! Rattling strings, ‘cutting’ and ‘sawing’, enjoying singing along and drinking a lot of beer.

Orgaanklap (NL)

Orgaanklap

The music of the Nether-party-punk-show band Orgaanklap lends itself for dancing. Moreover, it’s Dutch, so easy to understand. Orgaanklap has released a couple of cool albums with titles such as Fat Kwarktassen and Panic!

At The FEBO and really marvelous video clips and other videos. Would you like to know more? Come and see!

Rydacross (NL) An electronic mishmash of homemade beats. Their music video of Cooking In The Cancer Kitchen was screened last year during the shorts at the BUTFF and resulted in a broken amplifier. This inspired the duo to create an entire album with this kind of hullabaloo – and that sort of work will be diligently played.

music program Friday Asgrauw (NL) This homegrown black metal band channels an aggressive, yet atmospheric sound in their music. Expect adventurous compositions with epic guitar parts, banging drums and varied, layered vocals. Are you nostalgic for ‘90s black metal? Then this is a band you don’t want to miss!

albums bear titles like Doodskou and De Dodenvaart.

Opus Nocturnales (BE) Flanders is once again represented

Grift (NL) Atmospheric black metal with heavy grooves, rhythms and pounding riffs. This black metal band from the Netherlands has been active since 2007 and has countless gigs under its belt. They have, for example, already shared the stage with such legendary bands as Mayhem, Immortal, Funeral Winds, 1349 and Hekel.

Hekel (NL) “People who consider committing suicide should listen to Hekel,” according to the band itself. They have been making depressive misanthropic black metal since 1994.

Sneakily started as a secret side project by two Dutch black metal musicians who were involved with several other bands. Their infamous 18 - music program

at this year’s Black Metal Friday with this band from the outskirts of Antwerp. Already since 1997, Opus Nocturnales is known for its performances and traditional black metal. The theatrical aspect is an important part of every show they give. Anti-Christian, evil, satanic and dark...

Seamlessly fitting into the CarnEvil theme of this year’s BUTFF, this band with Louis Fleischauer from Berlin will perform a symphony of flesh. With rotating human instruments on meat hooks, cables and other contraptions, an agony full of pain, exhaustion and euphoria will trigger a reality switch in the minds of the spectators. Visual, acoustic meditative madness. The performers get into a trance where they share a catharsis-laden experience with the audience in the form of sound. Any kind of pressure on the meat hooks that pull on the skin will be translated into increased vibrations. For this ritual to be effective, every barrier between the stage and the audience must be destroyed. Therefore, the spectators will be encouraged to participate in the performance by carrying out various tasks.

Music program Sunday Workshop Passionfruit by Stijn de Laat For the ‘Passion Fruit’ project Stijn filmed worldwide jamming underground streetartists. Tough emotion, uncensored texts, honest passion. Without compromise, label boss and social media strategy, they just do their thing.

He also setup a big jammsession with these street artists from different corners of the world all together. How this works? De Laat will tell and show you in his workshop at the special Passion Fruit on stage. For this he sepcialyl invited Breda street artists.

Betonfraktion (NL) Loud, solid, passionate and ‘queer’. This band aims for ordeals and mixes a highly inflammable cocktail of partly structured and partly improvised energy.

Does this sound too abstract for you? Don’t panic, Betonfraktion is about rock.

And roll, if you wish. Coming out this autumn is I Changed My Sex, an EP with six snot horny tracks.

Dead Kittens

Dead Kittens (NL) This two-man band makes music with drums, keyboard, bass guitar, singing and shouting that might best be categorized as stoner punk. They also like to bring to your attention that it is important to regularly floss your teeth. For a clean and healthy set of teeth is of essential importance, they believe.

De Monsterband As closure of the festival: the Monsterband. In 2009, the Monsterband had its debut at the BUTFF of that year, back then still held in Electron. With a frequently changing lineup, the formation thereafter only occasionally appeared on the BUTFF stage. As a matter of principle, they never practice. This year in yet again a renewed lineup, but at least Kristus Kut and Butman will return.

AMF Korsetts Fashionshow One day before the performance by Louis Fleischauer of Aesthetic Meat Front, a fashion show by AMF Korsets will take place. On this occasion, a number of models will literally crawl into the skin of a Louis Fleischauer creation. AMF Korsets doesn’t believe in mass production, but in self-expression and individuality. Therefore, they specialize in custom-made garments. The creations can be seen as tools for transformation to arouse the desires that lurk in the subconscious of the individual. Use is made solely of European leather (most of which comes from Southern Germany). All creations are chrome-free and made of naturally tanned leather.

Poets & performance Ambassador BUT poets 2016: Nick J. Swarth Statement Grand Guignol in Dutch-speaking poetry, does such a thing exist?

The answer is simple: no. Our poets take themselves neatly serious, even the clowns among them. For the grotesque and horrific, there is seldom room. For the necessary CarnEvil we need to go a half century back in time, to the French symbolists. A guy like Baudelaire, he was excellent at it.

But is the world then safeguarded from BUT poets and performers? On the contrary! Your own BUT organization every year does its best to pull them from the national caverns and crevices. This year, you once again can enjoy BUT performers to the fullest. And as Ambassador of this curious and excessive bunch, I’m proud that I’ve been given the opportunity to personally introduce them to you!

Thursday BUTpoets-day

The poet stage on the festival’s Thursday has become a tradition. This year, this stage focuses on ‘Poetry bus peots’. With, among others, Gijs ter Haar and Joy Singh aka ‘Infinite Joy’ (PB edition 2016) and Simon Mulder (PB edition 2015). What makes Mulder so special is that he revives classics from literary history on the stage in a way that grabs you.

In addition, we have invited a very special singer-songwriter: Melvin 24 - Poets & performance program

Bonnet. His words stab, provoke, tear, grind, beat and make you laugh.

And not to miss: Lamy Lame. With the things she does with her words, which she seemingly knocks off, she shows you life as it actually is.

Everything is presented by Nick J. Swarth, the Ambassador for the BUT poets, which definitely will be an experience in its own right.

Fridayafternoon ‘Aan het woord’-program by Lea Theunissen (performer, poet en visual artist) Special BUT edition with ‘Spoken Word’ (in Dutch: ‘Aan het Woord’). This is a project by Lea Theunissen, who invited the various performers. From afternoon until early evening. Outdoors at the festival square and from gate to street. Including Nathan de Visser, rap, Maja Bolier, performance, Zsa Zsa Hessels, performance, Stan Gonera, word performance and Manon Verkooijen, word performance. Informal and experimental word stage that’s open to anyone who’s experimenting with words.

Barbie

mixed performance-actions Main act of this afternoon: ‘Performance Barbie’. Sven de Swerts (poet & performer) and Irene Siekman (theater maker) join the stage for the second time in a performance. They are inspired by horror, performance art and beauty ideals. ‘Physical integrity’ seems to be the key word. Saturday afternoon 3 September, outdoors at the festival square. Followed by a gig by the monumental poetry extravaganza cannon Theo Huijgens. Draped around this is silent performance art. With, among others, Lian Boeren (performer/poet/ visual artist/singer), Jolanda Jansen (performer) and Renate Engelen (performer/mixed media artist). And because it’s Market Day, Inge van der Venne (organ performance).

Sundayafternoon Two performance-acts Joke Olthaar in the ‘closet’ and Coen van der Spek with Dennis de Haas as duo KabouterKadaverKlan.

Joke Olthaar is in the closet. Concentration. Attention. The cabinet is the capsule that leads you to a place for experiments. Subtle and provoking, fantastic and sinister, a performance conducted by Olthaar always puts you on more legs.

Coen van der Spek & Dennis de Haas form the duo KabouterKadaverKlan (GnomeCadaverClan). Anyone who has the guts to come to the BUTFF and is smaller than 1.45 m will have a hard time. The toddlers of the KKK will have you for dinner. In a manhunt to everything tasting gnome-like, they will chop you to bits if you’re not careful.

Sunday afternoon & evening Performance Happy Meal In an autonomously financed research project in the start-up phase, ‘Utopia’, Studio Eldering&DeReuver examined the proportions of our social consumption behavior. In doing so, they respond to the way we consume in a context that is rapidly changing. With the increasing nationalization of world dishes, the rise of the ‘prosumer’, sustainable mashing, peer-to-peer table sharing and continuous innovation genetic innovation, the inequality in food distribution is getting increasingly visible.

Martin (Motor) Hager Hager is a talented graphic designer and illustrator from Landshut Bavaria (Germany).

This year, we gave him the assignment to design our BUTFF banner. He based his idea on a strange world, where giant shrimps with eyes on sticks, rule at the top of the foodchain and humans are used as candy. ‘ How would it really look like, if CarnEvil would rule in a city’ he must have wondered. A lot of fun and lurid events, full of shrimps, where people are delicious pieces of candy.

Hager is responsible for the Art direction of the German B-movie ‘Zombies from Outer Space’ (won BUT Best Feature Award in 2014). Hager is a big fan of fifties Sci-Fi and Horror Trash. He debuted in 2016 with his comic book ‘909 Alone’: a prequel in short animation with the titel ‘909 Depart’. Both of these parts will be showed during SHORTS 3 – Dead and Deaf block Saturday 16:00.

Saturday the 3th of September, he demonstrated HEBOCON; a ‘Trash Robot Fight’.

It’s hard to imagine today, but in the ‘80s cannibal movies were insanely popular. Tasteless? Maybe, but it’s still true that a movie like ‘Cannibal Holocaust’, a ‘mockumentary’, has inspired numerous filmmakers (see, for example, ‘The Blair Witch Project’). This documentary was made with tons of love for the genre and its creators.
