Ryan’s ramblings In Defence of a Lost Cause
Martin Scorsese is right: cinema is dying.* Almost its entire practice — from production to screening — now only seems to respond to the masses, the spectacle, safety, comfort and maximising the number of visitors in one room for the sake of profit. Along with the rise of multiplex theatres and blockbuster films, in which crowd-pleasing and fanservice are the only goals, the industry has turned into a tiresome friend who constantly and unsurely asks if everything is alright, leaving the audience pampered, passive and apathetic. These “cinemas” sell themselves as “a cosy night out”, instead of a place where the cultural experience of “going to the movies” is central, and where afterwards this experience can be processed by discussing it face to face with others. After all, a good film is likely to make you feel uncomfortable, have rough edges and contain challenging ideas, and so on. Nowadays, the internal values of the film experience are confused with the external rewards that accompany the internal values, which resulted in these rewards being seen as its only value. This contributed to the practice of cinema losing its power of persuasion. The film industry is playing it safe as much as possible since, because of its huge investments, it has become more financially dependent on the general public than ever before.** This corrosion of the practice of cinema must be countered on two sides: the producers, distributors and programmers on the one hand, and the public on the other. First of all, a good audience needs to be educated. A film experience is not about having the greatest sound possible, having the sharpest picture possible and having the comfiest seats possible in which to shove popcorn into one’s mouth. A film experience is primarily about being moved, surprised, inspired, challenged, and appreciating artistic and creative achievements and so on. It’s a gamble, a risk one must take — as for all good things in life. On the production side, corrosion can be countered by film producers giving upcoming filmmakers carte blanche, with the only condition not to exceed a low but reasonable x-amount.*** Although it’s probably already too late, I am glad to see that, to combat this corrosion, we — organisers, volunteers and visitors — personally take the initiative together by celebrating the BUT Film Festival. Each year the small screening rooms are built with darkening curtains and assembled chairs, with an average of about twenty visitors per screening. Laughing, sweating, enduring, while looking at a — often a bit dirty — screen in a place where all of us are made re-
sponsible for the atmosphere. In this way, we celebrate the makers who make visible or tangible that which is being excluded by the established order better known as the mainstream. These makers do so, not so much in a political or activist way, but by turning the expressive content and media that they use — film, music, games, poetry, and so on — inside out while breaking routines, conventions, rules, formulas and predictability through unrestrained artistry and ingenuity. Every year, BUTFF challenges the audiences to broaden their horizons and find the intrinsic qualities of the film experience. It’s the most fun you can have with your pants on if you ask me. But it seems that I am preaching to the choir again…**** * Scorsese stated that the art of cinema is being systematically devalued, sidelined, demeaned, and reduced to its lowest common denominator, ‘content’ , noting that a word used almost exclusively in the context of business is now applied to all moving images. ** This can also be seen in the risk-averse film programming, even in the less commercial film houses. They are too afraid that people will walk out of the theatre or decide to go to the competitor where yet another sequel to a proven formula is being shown. Moviegoers, too, generally behave like trained monkeys in the cage of consumerism, helping to reduce the film experience to a simple song with the same refrain over and over again. *** After the unexpected success of Easy Rider in the seventies, this led in Hollywood — with a limit of one million dollars per production — to films like Silent Running (a post-apocalyptic science fiction film with an environmental theme by Douglas Trumbull), The Hired Hand (Peter Fonda), The Last Movie (Dennis Hopper), Taking Off (Milos Forman) and American Graffiti (George Lucas). **** If I had more time, I would have written a shorter ramble.
