Message From The Dean

DEAR ALUMNI, FRIENDS, AND COLLEAGUES,

Early in 2019, we will complete our eightyear Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation cycle with a comprehensive, four-day site visit February 24–27.

Our preparation began in 2016 with revisions to our strategic plan (ultimately approved by the executive committee in January 2017). LCME data bases were populated by deans and administrative units, followed in September 2017 by the creation of five subcommittees to write focused self-studies of all aspects of our academic environment and a separate, independent student study based on a survey of their classmates. The task force—a broad-based committee of stakeholders chaired by Dr. Tom Moore—used the independent student analysis, the databases, and appendices to create a comprehensive 35-page, self-study report.

Throughout this process, we’ve affirmed many of our strengths, including commitment to our mission, strong academic program and leadership teams, responsiveness to student input, faculty development, and solid fiscal stewardship in a financially constrained environment.

We’ve also made important investments, including: • i mproved clarity of our medical education learning objectives; • s trengthened processes around curriculum evaluation, student assessment, and career advising; • i mproved student study and relaxation space and enhanced facets of student wellness; • better monitoring and quality of all aspects of our educational environment.

The protracted process of preparation has involved many students, faculty, and

staff. Many thanks to Deborah Vaughan, PhD, our Faculty Accreditation Lead, for shepherding this extensive process to date and to all of the many faculty, students, and staff who contributed. For more detailed information, visit our LCME accreditation website.

This issue of BU Medicine acknowledges the vital support and contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations that allow us to continue to learn, teach, and discover on the frontlines of medicine.

Our cover story features our new relationship with Johnson & Johnson’s early stage innovation group, Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJI). Dr. Avrum Spira will serve as global head of the JNJ Lung Cancer Initiative, based in JNJ space on the Medical Campus. He will remain Alexander Graham Bell Professor, the PI of several grants, and continue to work clinically at BMC, but will transition his current industry-sponsored research grants to his BUSM colleagues.

JNJ is also funding additional research opportunities for our cancer center and for other Medical and Charles River Campus investigators and departments. Increasing industry collaborations is a major goal for the University and School of Medicine; this relationship will create new models and avenues for such industry collaboration.

We also celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Framingham Heart Study and BU’s partnership with the NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in providing a home for the study, which has produced 3,716 publications in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals.

We especially acknowledge two foundations, the Walmart Foundation for renewing its support for our Women Veterans Network, and the Bob Woodruff Foundation for reextending its commitment to the Strength at Home nationwide program that seeks to prevent and treat intimate partner violence in veteran populations. Their continued support has been vital to our work with veterans.

This issue also highlights our faculty, staff, alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations whose contributions demonstrate a strong commitment to our future.

2018 White Coat Ceremony Welcomes 160 First-Year Students 1

O

n August 2, hundreds of family and friends proudly watched 160 students wind their way through the arches of the Talbot Building and under the large white tent on the Boston University Medical Campus. White coats folded neatly over their right arms, students were smiling, laughing, and enjoying the moment during the procession that preceded their inauguration into the profession of medicine.

A symbolic rite of passage for medical students, the White Coat Ceremony marks an important first step for students as they pledge their commitment to their profession and to the trust they must earn from their patients.

”This ceremony is about many things . . . it is a time of excitement, joy, anticipation, and even bittersweet sadness as all of our lives evolve. For members of the class, this is truly a remarkable moment, which I expect and hope you will remember, perhaps even treasure, always,” said former Associate Dean and Director of Admissions and Professor of Medicine Emeritus Robert Witzburg, MD (MED’77), as he officially presented the class of 2022.

Drawn from a pool of more than 11,000 candidates through six entry pathways and 75 undergraduate institutions, the class is 50 percent women and 22 percent from underrepresented groups in medicine. More than 20 percent hold a graduate degree at the master’s level or above; some hold more than one.

Unique in many ways, the class includes members from 36 US states and natives of 19 countries. Almost 85 percent are at least bilingual and, as a group, speak 26 different languages.

Appointed commissioner in February 2015, Dr. Bharel is responsible for spearheading the commonwealth’s response to the opioid crisis; implementing healthcare cost containment legislation; reducing health disparities; and finding public health solutions for healthcare reform and innovative solutions using data and evidence-based practices, among other healthcare quality improvement initiatives.

“Remember Your Journey and How You Got Here” On August 16, Boston University School of Medicine conferred 25 Master of Science degrees upon its third class of Physician Assistant graduates. “Today we celebrate your growth and accomplishments,” founding Director Mary L. Warner, MMSc, PA-C, told the assembled students.

The Class of 2018 joins 123,000 practicing physician assistants across the United States. Among their achievements, students participated in the Carl Toney Society; volunteered at Boston Healthcare for the Homeless; founded a Medical Spanish Elective; and led the Advocacy Training Program—all of which illustrate how committed and prepared the class is to practice medicine as PAs. Graduate Michael Sage welcomed this year’s Commencement speaker, Captain Robin N. Hunter-Buskey, DHSc, CPHQ, CDE, PA-C, a US Public Health Service senior physician assistant with more than 35 years of clinical experience in primary care settings as a PA and physical therapist.

“Today you become public health servants,” she told the graduates, encourag­ ing them to follow their passions and to “remember your journey and how you got here.”

“There are no shortcuts,” Buskey stressed, urging students not to compromise when they know something is wrong. She left them with the following charges: • Promote healthy living • Exercise leadership • Take care of yourselves • Appreciate the past 50 years of the profession, because the PA story is still being written.

For students, the ceremony marked the end of a two-and-a-half-year journey through an intensive course of study, including an integrated pathophysiology and pharmacology course alongside second-year medical students. In addition to classroom work, students also complete 14 months of clinical rotations and a thesis project.

PA Class of 2020 Celebrates at White Coat Ceremony

A

t the annual White Coat Ceremony on July 17, the Physician Assistant Class of 2020 celebrated the start of their journey into clinical care through the Boston University School of Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) Program.

Surrounded by family, faculty, and friends, they became the fifth PA student class to don their white coats at BUSM, which they received as a symbol of their progression to the clinical phase of their education after learning how to complete a history and physical exam in their first semester.

Founding Director Mary Warner, MMSc, PA-C, greeted students and David Coleman, MD, Wade Professor and chair of the department of medicine, addressed them. “Today, we celebrate the venerable tradition of the white coat,” Dr. Coleman said. “The white coat should be more than what you wear, (it) should be what’s within you. It should be a sense of selflessness; a sense of continuous personal and professional growth; a sense and commitment to working on interprofessional teams on behalf of your patients.”

The PA program received 2,103 applications for this class and accepted 42 students. Of those, 30 matriculated at the White Coat Ceremony.

Carl Toney, PA—after whom the BUSM Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants is named (The Carl Toney Student Society)— delivered the keynote address.

The inaugural class white coat speaker and a 1979 graduate of the Duke University PA program 1 with a long career in primary care,

public health, and public policy, Mr. Toney’s commitment to helping underserved populations is underscored by the positions he has held, including at the Georgia State Office of Rural Health and as director of the HIV-AIDS and STD programs for the Maine Bureau of Health.

“It’s not just a jacket,” Mr. Toney stressed. “It is the force that flows and helps us with our patients. For some it represents knowledge. For some it represents power. For some it represents privilege. And all those things are true. But I also think it represents some things that are as important, if not more important . . . including all the issues around help and extending our humanity to another individual.

“You cannot help the patient if you do not know the person,” he concluded.

Following the speakers, students were called up individually and cloaked in their white coats, after which they all recited the Physician Assistant Professional Oath and celebrated at a reception with families and friends. n

Why Some People’s CTE Symptoms Are More Severe Than Others BU researchers have identified a gene linked to CTE-related outcomes

A

fter 10 years of studying brains donated by families of deceased military service people, football players, and other contact-sport athletes, researchers from the BU School of Medicine and the VA Boston Healthcare System have amassed more than 600 brains, a collection they say has grown large enough to enable meaningful analysis of the genetics related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Their latest discovery—about the CTE-related significance of genetic variation in a gene called TMEM106B—could explain why similar levels of head trauma in different people can cause some of them to suffer more drastic symptoms of CTE than others. The findings are described in a study published in Acta Neuropathologica Communications November 3, 2018.

“In order to understand how genetic variants influence disease or severity, you need hundreds of cases,” says paper co–senior author Ann McKee, professor of neurology and pathology, chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System, and director of the BU CTE Center.

With more than 600 participants in the brain bank and counting, “we’ve reached a critical mass,” Dr. McKee says. “I expect to find a flood of new genes that influence the pathology of CTE. This is just the beginning.”

Toward predicting—and preventing—severe CTE Today, CTE can only be diagnosed by studying a person’s brain after death. And until now, it’s been unknown why repeated head injuries can lead to a range of mild to severe CTE symptoms among individual

college and professional athletes. The newly discovered genetic association between CTE and TMEM106B could someday help predict which people, while they are still alive, are most likely to develop severe symptoms of CTE, including dementia and the buildup of phosphorylated tau (p-tau) protein, a feature also associated with other neurodegenerative disorders like ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

“Among athletes who developed CTE pathology, those with the risk variation of TMEM106B were 2.5 times more likely to have dementia and increased levels of p-tau,” says paper co–first author Jesse Mez, assistant professor of neurology and a member of both the Alzheimer’s Disease Center and CTE Center.

TMEM106B was hardly a needle-in-the-haystack discovery. The team—which also included co–first author Jonathan Cherry, a postdoctoral fellow at the CTE Center, and co–senior author Thor Stein— had good reason to question a link between TMEM106B and CTE.

Repeat offenders: head injuries and TMEM106B “We focused on this gene because of its role in altering brain pathology in other neurological diseases and its role in inflammatory responses,” says Dr. Stein, BUSM assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, a neuropathologist at VA Boston Healthcare System, and the Alzheimer’s Disease Center neuropathology core associate director.

A stronger link between TMEM106B and neurodegeneration

Looking at the 86 participants who met the eligibility criteria for their analysis, the team performed genetic sequencing and identified two distinct categories of TMEM106B genetic variation within the group. They found a major genetic variation in about 60 percent of people and a minor genetic variation in the remaining 40 percent.

Then they assessed the participants based on several different traits known to be associated with CTE symptoms, including the loss of synapses, dementia before death, and p-tau accumulation throughout the brain.

When they compared the results with data from people who did not have CTE, the team found that TMEM106B does not influence whether or not a person develops CTE. But among people diagnosed with CTE, they found that the 60 percent with the major genetic variation were significantly more likely to have higher accumulation of p-tau, more severe brain inflammation associated with CTE symptoms, and dementia during their lifetimes.

Taken with previous studies linking TMEM106B to dementia, ALS, and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, the team’s findings further strengthen a connection between the TMEM106B gene and neurodegeneration.

dence of CTE in Caucasian football players, a sample size of 86 brain bank participants, all of whom had been diagnosed with CTE. In the search for genetic factors associated with CTE, football players make ideal study subjects because the nature and frequency of their head injuries make them relatively comparable across the population, in contrast to people who sustain more random head injuries from military-related blasts or other various traumas.

“Football players go through what we call repetitive head impacts,” Dr. Stein says.

Given TMEM106B’s association with other neurodegenerative diseases, the team also excluded brain bank participants who had evidence of other related diseases.

Although it’s not precisely known how TMEM106B influences p-tau accumulation and inflammatory responses, the team has a working hypothesis based on what is known.

The TMEM106B gene directs cells to produce proteins of the same name, TMEM106B. In turn, those are thought to play a role in the formation of cell organelles that are responsible for digesting enzymes. Yet too much TMEM106B, which could occur as a result of genetic variation, can make enzyme digestion less efficient.

Inside brain cells that play an important role in cleaning the brain of damage-related proteins like p-tau, abnormal enzyme digestion could result in the hallmark buildup of the damaging proteins seen in cases of CTE. “We’re at a place where we clearly know that there’s a link between contact sports and CTE, but we don’t yet have a good sense of the magnitude of that relationship,” says Dr. Mez, who is particularly interested in understanding how genetic and trauma-related factors influence dementia risk.

There’s likely a number of genes that contribute on various levels to bring someone from the neurotypical end of the spectrum to a diagnosis of severe CTE. With the number of brain bank participants continuing to creep above 600, more genetic factors related to CTE could be on the near horizon. McKee, who was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2018, has said that unless the rules of the game begin to change, the research around brains with CTE could one day influence the popularity of football in America.

“As your sample size gets bigger, you’re able to identify genes that have smaller and smaller effects,” says Dr. Cherry. “It’s an advantage for us that we’re not just operating on clinical diagnoses of dementia, for example, but that we have the actual CTE pathology in front of us to quantify what we’re seeing with the presence of certain genetic variations.” n Winter 2019 | bumc.bu.edu

Celebrating the Framingham Heart Study: 70 Years, 15,000 Participants, 3,716 Research Papers, and More

ow do you thank 15,000 participants who have shared their time, health information, and biological samples without asking for anything in return? You throw a party! On October 26, the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) invited all participants to a two-part, daylong celebration that included an open house at headquarters and a public celebration complete with refreshments and distinguished guest speakers.

Among the more than 60 participants who attended, Omni 2 participant Sandra Knowlton shared her enthusiasm for the FHS. “It’s a wonderful study. The data that they collect is amazing. I mean it’s called the Framingham Heart Study, but they’re studying every single thing in your body, which is amazing. It’s just great to be a part of it, and it’s run in my hometown.”

How It All Began

In the beginning, 5,209 Framingham (Massachusetts) residents volunteered in 1948 to be part of a study to better understand heart disease. In the following decades, the data gleaned from these volunteers, their offspring, and their grandchildren revolutionized the medical profession’s approach to cardiovascular health, as the focus shifted from treating the sick to helping healthy people prevent cardiovascular disease in themselves through a series of lifestyle choices.

At that time, Framingham had transitioned from a farming community into a factory town with 28,000 residents of predominantly European origin, and was considered representative of the United States in the 1940s. Workers produced rugs, paper products, and General Motors automobiles. Today, the city boasts a population of 68,000 and major employers—including the biotech, educational, medical, and retail industries—are primarily nonmanufacturing. To reflect the diversity in Framingham’s population, the study has added Omni cohorts 1 and 2.

“My grandparents were from Framingham—you had to be to start in the first generation (of the FHS). They were excited to participate because there was nothing like it at the time. It’s a world-renowned study; I’m happy that I can take part in it. It’s done so much to aid major breakthroughs,” said third-generation participant Pamela

Open House Innovations At the open house, volunteer participants learned about recent advances FHS researchers are pursuing, including: • A state-of-the-art cardiopulmonary fitness center that literally measures every breath a participant takes along with hundreds of small molecules circulating in the bloodstream that change in response to exercise. The objective is to improve how to predict future cardiovascular disease and understand how exercise lends cardiovascular health benefits. Researchers analyze relationships between exercise responses and the structure and function of the heart, family traits, risk factors, and future cardiovascular health.

• Using digital and mobile devices to obtain a more meaningful, real-world view of participant health and behaviors outside the research center. A new smartphone app called eFHS collects the latest information about cardiovascular health and sends short surveys to participants every three months. Participants pair the

app with a digital blood pressure cuff and Apple Watch to track blood pressure, heart rate, and step-count data.

• Technology that visualizes and measures platelet clot formation in real-time movies within a simulated blood vessel with flowing blood. Five different technologies are used to test platelets, which results in unprecedented scale and depth of platelet biomarker data that provides key insights into how biomarkers relate to each other—and whether they relate to cardiovascular risk factors, clinical bleeding history, or can predict future clinical cardiovascular outcomes. The data may also lead to new potential drug targets for cardiovascular disease or genetic modifiers of commonly used platelet-directed treatments, including aspirin and thienopyridines.

Participants toured 14 stations that highlighted the different components of a typical exam and also had the opportunity to take part in small-group discussions with lead researchers, including Principal Investigator and Director of the Framingham Heart Study and BUSM Professor of Medicine Vasan Ramachandran, MD, FACC.

Anniversary Celebration Later in the day, nearly 300 participants, researchers, and staff members marked the anniversary with a public reception to meet and mingle over refreshments (graciously provided by the Friends of the Framingham Heart Study). The printed program included messages from Boston University President Robert Brown, PhD, and Gary H. Gibbons, MD, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health.

“The Framingham Heart Study, in its objective and results, reflects Boston University’s mission to create new knowledge to benefit society . . . Thousands of articles and presentations at conferences have led to the identification of risk factors and then interventions that have translated into increased medical understanding and new therapies that have led to prolonged, improved quality of life . . . We are proud to be the principal academic research partner in this long-running project,” said President Brown.

Appointments, Honors & Awards Priya Garg Named Associate Dean, Medical Education Priya S. Garg, MD, has accepted the position of associate dean for medical education (formerly known as academic affairs) effective November 20, 2018.

Dr. Garg has served as associate dean ad interim for academic affairs since July 1. She came to BUSM in January 2017 as director of the Medical Education Office and an assistant dean for curriculum and assessment. Since her arrival, she has led the development of new clinical assessments in the third year, created a new educational quality improvement process for courses and clerkships, pioneered improvements and changes focused on new curricular outcomes, and started the work of preclerkship integration. Over the last year, she has worked with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) leadership and the LCME task force to address multiple accreditation standards related to medical education and develop new innovations as the school prepares for its LCME site visit.

After completing her pediatric and chief residencies at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Dr. Garg joined the faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine, where she served as pediatric clerkship director (2008–2010), pediatric residency program director (2010–2017), and associate director of graduate medical education for quality and safety (2014–2017). She also led multiple faculty development programs on educational leadership and teaching. She has completed the Harvard Macy Program for Health Professionals and the Academic Pediatric Association’s (APA) Educational Scholars Program.

David Naparstek Community Mentor Award from Tufts University School of Public Health.

Dr. Garg has enjoyed mentoring and working with students throughout her career and will continue to do so in her new role, while also pursuing her clinical work as a pediatric hospitalist in the Department of Pediatrics. n Barbara Schreiber Appointed Assistant Dean, GMS Alumni Affairs Barbara Schreiber, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry, has been appointed assistant dean, GMS alumni affairs.

In this role, Dr. Schreiber will serve as a liaison between GMS and BUSM Alumni Affairs, representing GMS students and alumni in outreach efforts; coordinate and attend GMS alumni events and BUSM-wide events that include GMS alumni with BUSM alumni office staff and deans; help identify GMS and other BUSM PhD alumni candidates for an annual award; develop a comprehensive database for PhD alumni; and support a PhD alumni network that can offer support for doctoral and postdoctoral trainees in their professional development.

Dr. Schreiber came to BUSM in 1975 as a graduate student in microbiology; she earned her PhD in microbiology in 1981. A postdoctoral trainee in clinical microbiology at University Hospital from 1981–1983 and a postdoctoral fellow in biochemistry from 1983–1987, she was appointed research assistant professor in 1987, research associate professor in 1997, and associate professor in 1999.

Dr. Schreiber serves as director of biochemistry graduate studies, director of the GMS Program in Biomedical Sciences (PiBS), and course manager of the biochemistry class taught to first-year BU dental students and Oral Health Sciences students. She is one of the co-PIs on the NIH-funded BU’s BEST award, dedicated to broadening experiences in biomedical science training for our PhD students and postdoctoral trainees. n Anand Devaiah Appointed President of Society of University Otolaryngologists Anand K. Devaiah, MD, associate professor of otolaryngologyhead and neck surgery, neurosurgery and ophthalmology, was named president of the Society of University Otolaryngologists (SUO) at its annual meeting in November.

SUO brings together otolaryngologists in academic departments from around the country and beyond to address the unique opportunities and challenges in academic medicine, including efforts to enhance professional development, physician resilience, balance for underrepresented minorities in medicine, gender equity, and educational and healthcare innovation. Since joining SUO in 2003, Dr. Devaiah has served in different capacities to further these goals and has

also held several leadership roles, including secretary-treasurer, chair of the membership committee, and member of the executive council and program committee.

Dr. Devaiah, who is also director of the Biomedical and Health Technology Development & Transfer Domain for the Boston University Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy, served as president elect for the past year.

His clinical, research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities focus on anterior and lateral skull base surgery, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, and head and neck surgical oncology. Joining BUSM in 2002, he established the first multidisciplinary approaches to skull base surgery at Boston Medical Center (BMC) that year, including the introduction of endoscopic and endoscopicassisted skull base surgery methods for benign and malignant disease. His areas of expertise include surgical techniques, surgical and medical technology development, outcome analyses using expanded dataset analyses, and analysis of resource utilization in head and neck/skull base surgery.

From 2015–17, Dr. Devaiah served as a medical officer and fellow with the Food and Drug Administration in the Center for Devices and Radiologic Health as a part of the Ear, Nose, and Throat Branch. Evaluating new technology and protocols for enhancing human health was integral to his role.

He has also served as past chair and longtime member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery’s (AAO-HNS) medical devices and drugs committee, which launched several initiatives relevant to biomedical devices and public health policy. He is the current cochair of the research committee of the North American Skull Base Society to promote international innovation in this multidisciplinary clinical space; serves on the BU Medical Campus institutional review board; is an AAO-HNS skull base surgery committee member, a member of the BU-BMC Cancer Center, and a member of the Medical Education Committee; chairs the electives curriculum subcommittee for the School of Medicine; and is past president of the BMC medical-dental staff. n

Naomi Hamburg Installed as Joseph A. Vita, MD, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine Naomi M. Hamburg, MD, MS, FACC, has been named the Joseph A. Vita, MD, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine. The professorship honors the late Dr. Vita, who served as director of clinical research at the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, BUSM professor of medicine, and senior cardiologist in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at Boston Medical Center (BMC).

A renowned clinician and translational scientist, Dr. Vita launched the Journal of the American Heart Association and served as its first editor in chief. He devoted his career to clinical and translational research in vascular biology with a focus on mechanisms and clinical consequences of endothelial dysfunction. He created vascular testing spaces within the Whitaker Institute as well as at the Framingham Heart Study, where he and his team studied vascular physiology in patients. He was also principal investigator of a Specialized Center of Clinically Oriented Research (SCCOR) Grant on Vascular Injury, Remodeling, and Repair titled “Vascular Consequences of Insulin Resistance and Obesity.” Dr. Vita died on November 2, 2014.

“I am honored and humbled to become the inaugural Joseph A. Vita Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and to serve as a representative of the impact Joe had on so many lives and careers,” Dr. Hamburg said.

Joining BUSM in 2007, Dr. Hamburg was promoted to associate professor in 2013 and chief of vascular biology in 2016. A recipient of the Department of Medicine’s Dawson Junior Faculty Development Award, she served as associate director of the vascular medicine training program and on the executive committee of the T32 cardiovascular training grant.

“Naomi, much like Joe, is the proverbial quintuple threat: gifted scientist, devoted clinician, brilliant mentor, leader of vascu-

lar medicine, and someone who is deeply devoted to her family,” said Emelia Benjamin, MD, assistant provost for faculty development and professor of cardiology.

Dr. Hamburg is nationally recognized as a leading researcher in endothelial biology and for developing translational approaches to model the impact of diabetes and peripheral artery disease on vascular function. As part of the Framingham Heart Study Vascular Function Group, she and her colleagues have shown the predictive value of endothelial function for cardiovascular events. Her research has been funded through the American College

of Cardiology, Santander Foundation, and the NIH through R01 and P01 programs.

She is also an investigator in the NIH/ FDA-funded AHA Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center, focused on understanding the health impact of novel tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes.

“Dr. Hamburg is someone whom, if Joe were sitting in the front row today, he would be so proud to have as the inaugural Joe Vita Professor,” said David Coleman, MD, Wade Professor and chair of medicine at BUSM and BMC physician in chief.

She received her bachelor’s and medical degrees from Harvard University and completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. As a research fellow in cardiovascular medicine under Dr. Vita’s mentorship, she completed her MSc in epidemiology at the BU School of Public Health as part of her fellowship in the BUSM K12 in vascular medicine.

Debjani Sahni Installed as Dr. G. Robert Baler Junior Faculty Professor of Dermatology Debjani Sahni, MD, has been named the Dr. G. Robert Baler Junior Faculty Professor of Dermatology. The professorship honors the late Dr. Baler, who was appointed as an instructor of dermatology at BUSM in 1956 and served as a faculty member in the department until 2013. He was promoted to clinical professor of dermatology in 1988 and appointed professor emeritus in 2001. He died on April 18, 2014.

Dr. Baler is remembered for his exceptional dedication to teaching the next generation of dermatologists, his outstanding clinical skills and devotion to his patients, and his warm and upbeat personality. He was a kind and gentle man who was quick with a smile and cared deeply about his profession, his community and, above all, his family.

“I think Dad would be thrilled to know that at this institution with strong academics and compassionate care, now his name is forever linked to a professorship,” said Dr. Baler’s son, Joseph Baler, MD. “I want to let Dr. Sahni know that my father will be looking over you. Do not be surprised if he whispers in your ear from time to time with words of advice, encouragement, and guidance as you follow your path in dermatology.”

Dr. Sahni joined the BUSM faculty as an instructor of dermatology and staff dermatologist at Boston Medical Center in 2011.

Promoted to assistant professor in 2012, she serves as director of the multidisciplinary Cutaneous Oncology Program, specializing in the care of cutaneous oncology patients, including cutaneous lymphomas and the medical management of melanoma and highrisk non-melanoma skin cancers. She also directs the Cutaneous Oncology Fellowship and the International Program in Dermatology (IGPD), first established in 1988, which offers international postgraduate doctors the opportunity to train in dermatology, utilizing

state-of-the-art facilities and therapies available in the United States.

“We congratulate Dr. Sahni on being named the incumbent Dr. G. Robert Baler Junior Professor of Dermatology. Dr. Baler’s legacy will live on through the work you do,” said Karen Antman, MD, BUMC provost and BUSM dean.

A member of the Medical Advisory Council for the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation, Dr. Sahni’s clinical research focuses on the epidemiology and treatment of skin cancers.

Her academic interests include teaching and mentoring. She has lectured both in Europe and the United States, and has authored a number of scientific papers. Since her arrival at BUSM seven years ago, she has received four Department of Dermatology Teacher of the Year awards.

Dr. Baler is remembered for his exceptional dedication to teaching the next generation of dermatologists, his outstanding clinical skills, and his devotion to his patients.

“I cannot think of a member of our faculty more deserving of this honor than Dr. Sahni,” said Rhoda Alani, MD, Herbert Mescon Professor and chair of dermatology.

Dr. Sahni received her MBBS from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals in London. After finishing her internal medicine residency, she acquired her MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) and completed a dermatology residency at the St. John’s Institute of Dermatology in London, followed by a cutaneous oncology fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.

“It is an honor for me to receive this endowed professorship and a significant moment in my career,” Dr. Sahni said. “I am very grateful to Dr. Baler and his family for their ongoing commitment and generosity to the Department of Dermatology.” n

Terence Keane Receives APA Presidential Award Terence M. Keane, PhD, professor of psychiatry and clinical psychology and assistant dean for research at BUSM, has received the Presidential Award from the Division of Trauma Psychology at the American Psychological Association (APA).

The award, presented at the APA’s 2018 annual meeting, is given annually to “an individual who has made unusual and outstanding contributions to the Division of Trauma Psychology.”

Dr. Keane, who also serves as associate chief of staff for research and development at VA Boston Healthcare System and director of the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder’s Behavioral Science Division, is a national leader in the field of psychological trauma, having published more than 300 articles and book chapters on the assessment and treatment of PTSD. His current work revolves around constructing an internet-based treatment program to help war veterans with post-deployment behavioral health problems readjust to life outside of the military.

Dr. Keane is a fellow of the APA and the Association for Psychological Science, as well as the current president of the American Psychological Foundation. He has received numerous honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Robert Laufer Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and the Harold Hildreth Award for Contributions to Public Service from the APA. He has also received two honorary doctorates in recognition of his contributions to the field of psychology.

Dr. Keane completed his predoctoral clinical internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center/VA Jackson Consortium. He received his PhD in psychology from Binghamton University and his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Rochester. n

In Memoriam

Osamu Shimomura Osamu Shimomura, BUSM professor emeritus of physiology and co-recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry, died of natural causes on October 19 in Nagasaki, Japan, at age 90.

A former senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Shimomura and his fellow prizewinners were cited for their discovery of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) in jellyfish that glows under ultraviolet light.

As a researcher at Princeton University, Dr. Shimomura successfully isolated GFP from luminous Aequorea victoria jellyfish in 1962, a remarkable achievement that enabled investigators to directly observe proteins living in cells, aiding in cancer and other research worldwide.

Boston University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science in 2010.

At 16, Dr. Shimomura was working at a Nagasaki munitions factory when the city experienced the US atomic bombing on August 9, 1945. He graduated from Nagasaki Medical Specialized School in 1951, predecessor of the Department of Pharmacy at Nagasaki University, and obtained a PhD in organic chemistry from Nagasaki University in 1960.

In accordance with his wishes, funeral services have been held with immediate family members in attendance. n

Judith Vaitukaitis Dr. Judith Vaitukaitis, BUSM alumna and professor best known for her role as director of the US National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), died from Parkinson’s disease on October 19. She was 78.

An accomplished reproductive neuroendocrinologist and clinical researcher, Dr. Vaitukaitis played a key role in developing a biochemical assay in the early 1970s that

ultimately led to the creation of the home pregnancy test. She retired from the NIH in 2005 as senior advisor on scientific infrastructure and resources.

She received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from Tufts University in 1962 and her MD in 1966 from BUSM, then completed her residency at Cornell Medical Services, Bellevue Memorial Hospital, New York.

In 1970, she joined the NIH as a postdoctoral researcher to study human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), first at the National Cancer Institute and then in the reproduction research branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). There, she and colleagues explored how to accurately detect elevated hCG levels to detect cancer and recognized that because hCG is secreted during pregnancy as well, a sensitive hCG assay might also detect early-stage pregnancy; they published a landmark paper in 1972 that described the assay. Marketed to consumers in 1978, the first home pregnancy tests were based on their method.

After becoming one of the first women to achieve senior investigator rank at the NICHD, she retired to BUSM in 1974 as professor of medicine, section chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Boston City Hospital, and director of BUSM’s General Clinical Research Center. She returned to the NIH as director of the General Clinical Research Centers program, a national network of specialized centers in academic medical centers, ultimately directing the NCRR. Dr. Vaitukaitis is survived by her sister, Ruth J. Vaitukaitis of Windsor Locks; her sister-in-law, Georgina Vaitukaitis of Essex, Maryland; and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and a great-niece.

She was predeceased by her sister, Dolores V. Boland; her husband, Robert G. Boland; and her brother, Robert G. Vaitukaitis. n

Edward J. Modest Dr. Edward J. Modest, former BUSM professor of biochemistry, died peacefully at home on October 22. He was 95.

Dr. Modest attended Cambridge Latin High School and Harvard College, graduating at 19 in 1943. He then joined the US Navy, serving in the Pacific during WWII as the engineering officer on a destroyer escort. After completing his military service in 1946, he earned his PhD in organic chemistry at Harvard. Dr. Sidney Farber of Boston’s Children’s Cancer Research Foundation (later the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), subsequently hired him, and he served as head of the Department of Organic Chemistry there for 30 years.

His major research focused on developing antimalarial drugs, cancer chemotherapy, infusion pump technology, and a novel approach to fluorescently labeling chromosomes; in this work he collaborated extensively with scientists from Sweden, Italy, Japan, France, and the UK. He later joined Bowman Gray College of Medicine, for 10 years, helping develop their cancer center and teaching pharmacology to medical students. Dr. Modest returned to BUSM in 1990 to finish his research career as a professor of biochemistry with Dr. Carl Franzblau; he retired in 2010. During the course of his professional career, he was involved in many scientific committees at the National Institutes of Health, published more than 300 journal articles, and wrote several textbook chapters.

He is survived by his children Geoffrey, Vicki, and Andrew; their loving spouses Julie, John, and Beth; and his grandchildren Sam, Zachary, Peter, Jacob, Emily, Nicholas, Jessica, Ellie, and Grace. n

n what Boston University President Robert A. Brown envisions as a model for industry and academia collaborating to improve human health, BU has launched a five-year translational research alliance with Johnson & Johnson Innovation LLC (JJI) aimed at preventing, intercepting, and curing lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.

As part of the new alliance, JJI will fund a Johnson & Johnson Innovation Lung Cancer Center at Boston University on the Medical Campus, where BU researchers will work closely with members of

the Lung Cancer Initiative within Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to develop biomarker-based early-screening tests for lung cancer, as well as therapeutics to arrest or eradicate the disease in its earliest stages.

The goal is to combine the resources of healthcare giant J&J with expertise at Boston University to speed the development of interventions and cures.

Avrum Spira (ENG’02), a School of Medicine professor of medicine, pathology, and bioinformatics, and a pioneering researcher in the genomics and early detection of lung cancer, will direct the new center. arm of J&J, has joined JJI as global head of the Lung Cancer Initiative within J&J, which will be based at the new center at BU. “Building solutions that prevent and intercept disease requires very close collaboration between academic researchers and industry,” says Dr. Spira. “We need better and more rapid alignment of discovery with clinical application and development experience to bring forward important new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.” The new alliance between BU and JJI, he says, “will help identify novel technologies and approaches that support this new vision.”

A GLOBAL RESEARCH EFFORT

The alliance between BU and JJI—and additional research funding from JJI—seeks to build upon collaborative programs related to two extensive lung cancer research studies. These projects involve teams of cancer researchers from multiple universities and medical institutions across the United States and Europe, with BU as the lead site and Dr. Spira as the lead investigator.

The first project, Detection of Early Cancer Among Military Personnel (DECAMP), involves a translational research consortium that was established by the US Department of Defense in 2011 and is now cofunded by the National Cancer Institute and Janssen. The consortium of four military hospitals, seven VA hospitals, and several academic medical centers is building a cohort of more than 1,000 military personnel, veterans, and civilians at high risk for lung cancer, and discovering how different types of biomarkers can improve lung cancer screening and early detection.

In the second project, which originated in 2014 with funding from Janssen, Dr. Spira and his collaborators are developing a precancer genome atlas (PCGA) to characterize the earliest cellular and molecular changes in the airway and lung that lead to invasive lung cancer, in order to identify which precancerous lesions are at highest risk of progressing to lung cancer and uncover novel therapeutic approaches that will block the development of these abnormal tissues into lung cancer. The PCGA project received additional funding when Dr. Spira was named to lead the nonprofit Stand Up To Cancer multidisciplinary lung cancer interception dream team in 2017. Along with his research record, he brings to the new alliance his extensive network of scientific collaborators across the United States and abroad, and his leadership skills.

The alliance also envisions that pilot programs developed by teams from across Boston University will be selected and advanced with close collaboration from JJI.

THE CHALLENGES—AND THE OPPORTUNITY

Because it is extremely difficult to diagnose before it has metastasized, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of men and women in the United States; more people die from lung cancer than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Worldwide, the number of lung cancer deaths is growing in China and other countries, and among women. Lung cancer’s five-year survival rate is only 17.8 percent, much lower than that of other common cancers and only marginally improved over the past four decades (in 1977, the five-year survival rate was 13 percent).

“The important thing for the world is attacking a disease like lung cancer, which would make a big difference in global health,” says David Center (MED’72), Gordon and Ruth Snider Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and director of BU’s Clinical & Translational Research Institute.

“The important thing —BU President Robert A. Brown for BU is to have a partnership with a company that is able to drive forward our ideas and technology without a lot of middlemen. It’s an extraordinary opportunity.”

Dr. Center also says that J&J’s partnership with BU could prompt “other pharmaceutical companies to fund partnerships like this with select institutions that have the academic and scientific expertise to help them with diseases they’re interested in.”

There is widespread consensus among US health and academic leaders, policymakers, and scientists that it is taking too long to translate biomedical academic research breakthroughs into treatments and other therapeutics that can help people and improve health. To accelerate the pace, experts agree, industry and academia must find more ways to collaborate.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity, working with a great partner, to develop new therapies and screening methods and to reduce the time between invention and bedside application,” BU President Robert A. Brown says. “I am confident that the alliance between J&J and BU will produce life-saving, life-changing breakthroughs and will become a model for how a research university can collaborate with a great corporate partner.”

Gloria Waters, vice president and associate provost for research at BU, says Johnson & Johnson’s cross-sector Lung Cancer Initiative is unique because it brings together consumer, medical device, and pharmaceutical groups to work on one disease.

“The initiative’s goals are very ambitious,” says Dr. Waters.

“There are potentially many faculty at BU who can contribute to the endeavor. Our hope is that this alliance will allow us to broaden our collaboration with J&J to include not only faculty from the Medical School but also researchers from our basic science departments and our College of Engineering through an open call for proposals for pilot projects which will be funded by J&J.”

The new Lung Cancer Initiative within J&J is “dedicated to transforming the standard of care for this devastating disease,” says William Hait, J&J global head of global external innovation, which is focused on prevention, interception, and cures for disease. “We are excited to be collaborating with Boston University in this important mission and bringing the research and development expertise of our consumer, medical device, and pharmaceutical groups together to address this critical need for patients around the world.”

In his new role, Dr. Spira has stepped down as director of the Boston University–Boston Medical Center Cancer Center. the section of computational biomedicine and to care for patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Boston Medical Center.

JJI plans to renovate space on the Medical Campus—close to the Spira lab—for the new center, which will include a team of J&J scientists and business people. The alliance is intended to bypass a discouraging pattern familiar to Dr. Spira and other academic researchers: the maze of scientific, clinical testing, regulatory, and other obstacles that academic scientists must navigate to bring their basic science and discoveries to commercialization. This pattern is encountered so often that the researchers have a name for it: the valley of death.

Without preexisting industry ties, it took Dr. Spira and colleague Jerome Brody, a professor of medicine emeritus, nearly 10 years to get their discovery—a genomic biomarker for a relatively noninvasive early-detection test for lung cancer—to patients. Struggling to raise venture capital funding, in 2007 they started their own small company, AllegroDx. AllegroDx was eventually acquired by a larger company, Veracyte, which made the diagnostic test Percepta available to the first patients in 2015 and received a Medicare coverage decision in 2017.

“That’s the one scientific discovery from my lab that’s made it all the way into patients and is impacting care,” says Dr. Spira. “I want to do that again. I want to do it bigger and better. I want to move faster. It’s extremely hard to do this in academia alone. We have so many discoveries that could help people who are suffering. We have to work with industry. It’s the only way it’s going to happen.”

“Avi is an extraordinary person—a once-in-a-lifetime person who comes along with all the skills J&J wants, and BU wants,” Dr. Center says, and through the alliance he should “be able to make a greater impact than he’s already made. Avi will succeed no matter what.”

RAPID AND POSITIVE EVOLUTION

BU’s new alliance with JJI, and its focus on intercepting lung cancer, comes at a time when cancer researchers and physicians are expressing renewed optimism over recent breakthroughs and new technologies that are enabling new targeted treatments, such as immunotherapy, for a number of cancers.

“The technologies and scientific insights are evolving so rapidly that there’s a huge opportunity to bring them to bear on disease and make a difference—and cancer is way ahead of other diseases,” says Dr. Spira.

His work as a pulmonary physician—managing lung cancer patients who usually don’t get diagnosed until after their disease has metastasized—is part of what drives him in his research and in his new role with JJI. “The unmet need in lung cancer is great,” he says.

“It’s the number-one killer by far—more than the next three cancers combined. It’s a horrible disease because it’s almost always diagnosed too late. We don’t want to be focused on late-stage disease, where research is mostly focused today. We want to move earlier in the disease process. We want to prevent disease from happening in the first place and, among those patients who are already incubating disease, intercept the predisease process to block the development of full-blown advanced disease. ■ Men More Likely Rehospitalized After Sustaining Firearm Injury

Men have a substantially greater hospital readmission risk during the first three months following a firearm injury hospitalization compared to women. While this overall risk was no longer observed at six months after the initial hospitalization, the risk of renal failure and cardiovascular readmissions among males was more than three times greater than females at six months. This study provides the first evidence of gender-specific differences in readmission rates after discharge from firearm injury hospitalization.

Using a Nationwide Readmission Database (2013– 2014), BUSM researchers analyzed the total readmission visits, total cost of hospitalization, cost per readmission, total length of stay (LOS) in days, and LOS per readmission in days of more than 17,000 men and 2,200 women who were admitted to the hospital after a firearm injury. After six months they found men were 3.3 times more likely to be readmitted to the hospital for heartrelated problems when compared with women. Men were also 40 percent more likely to be readmitted for any reason within the first three months after their initial injury.

“This study is the first to compare male and female survivors of firearm injury after their initial hospitalization.

Since hospitals are financially penalized for admissions, these results may lead to male-specific programs to improve health outcomes after firearm injuries,” explained Bindu Kalesan, PhD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine.

These findings appear in the American Journal of Men’s Health.

■ Staging System Developed to Predict Survival for Patients with Light Chain Amyloidosis

A new staging system with a more accessible test to predict the chance of survival in patients living with light chain (AL) amyloidosis has been developed. Led by researchers from the Amyloidosis Center at BUSM and Boston Medical Center (BMC), the test incorporates cardiac biomarkers to accurately identify the heart’s role in the disease, allowing doctors to predict outcomes of patients with AL amyloidosis.

This study provides the first evidence of gender-specific differences in readmission rates after discharge from firearm injury hospitalization.

The researchers reference studies that show teen girls who manipulated their photos were more concerned with their body appearance, and those with dysmorphic body image seek out social media as a means of validation.

AL amyloidosis is a rare condition caused when bone marrow produces abnormal antibodies that can’t be broken down and are deposited in tissues, interfering with organ function. Survival for patients with AL amyloidosis is related to cardiac involvement, making cardiac biomarkers an accurate measure for staging for risk stratification.

Researchers created the new brain natriuretic peptide (BNP)-based staging to align with current staging systems that use another test, called N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). The NT-proBNP testing method is not available at all medical centers; however, BNP testing is available at most academic medical centers, making the new BU biomarker score a viable option for hospitals treating patients with AL amyloidosis.

Researchers analyzed data from 250 participants who had received both tests during their evaluation at the BUSM-BMC Amyloidosis Center between April and September 2016. The study, published in Blood, Journal of the American Society of Hematology, found that the BU biomarker system accurately identified cardiac involvement and separated patients into survival stages equivalent with current systems.

“Our goal in creating the BU biomarker score and staging system was to increase access to appropriate staging systems at hospitals that are not able to perform NT-proBNP testing,” said Vaishali Sanchorawala, MD, senior author and director of the BUSM-BMC Amyloidosis Center and professor of medicine. “Despite being a rare disease, it is vital that all patients with AL amyloidosis are given the best chance at effective treatment and ultimately, survival.”

■ How Selfies and Filters Affect Body Image

With the spread of photo-editing technology through applications like Snapchat and Facetune, the level of physical “perfection” previously seen only on celebrity or beauty magazines is now all over social media. As these images become the norm, perceptions of beauty worldwide are changing, which can take a toll on a person’s self-esteem and can trigger Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), according to BUSM researchers in a JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Viewpoint.

The researchers reference studies that show teen girls who manipulated their photos were more concerned with their body appearance, and those with dysmorphic body image seek out social media as a means of validation. Additional research has shown 55 percent of plastic surgeons report seeing patients who want to improve their appearance in selfies.

“A new phenomenon called ‘Snapchat Dysmorphia’ has popped up,” said Neelam Vashi, MD, director of the

Ethnic Skin Center at BMC and BUSM, “where patients are seeking out surgery to help them appear like the filtered versions of themselves.”

According to Dr. Vashi, surgery is not the best course of action in these cases, because it will not improve, and may worsen underlying BDD. She recommends psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy and management of the disorder in an empathetic and nonjudgmental way.

■ Age, Marital Status, BMI, and Sleep Associated with Risk for Dementia

Could your age, marital status, BMI (body mass index) and amount of sleep impact your risk for dementia?

BUSM researchers analyzed data from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) to identify new combinations of risk factors that are linked to increased risk of dementia in later life.

“This study is the first step in applying machine learning approaches to identifying new combinations of factors that are linked to increased risk of dementia later in life. “By focusing on modifiable risk factors, we are hoping to identify disease risk factors that are amenable to change, enabling the possibility of preventing dementia,” explained corresponding author Rhoda Au, PhD, professor of anatomy and neurobiology.

Using data from FHS, the researchers examined demographic and lifestyle data collected from 1979 until 1983 and then determined who was subsequently diagnosed with dementia. As expected, greater age was strongly associated with dementia as was a marital status of ‘widowed,’ lower BMI, and having experienced less sleep at mid-life. These findings appear in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

■ Flavored Electronic Cigarettes Linked to Possible Cardiovascular Disease

There has been a rapid rise in e-cigarette use, partially due to flavoring additives in tobacco products and the perception of e-cigarettes as being less harmful than traditional combustible cigarettes. Numerous studies have been done on the risks of e-cigarettes to lungs, but the risk to blood vessels and how flavorings can affect the body are largely unknown.

BUSM researchers analyzed data from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) to identify new combinations of risk factors that are linked to increased risk of dementia in later life.

A new study suggests that contact sports athletes may also be at increased risk for Lewy Body Disease, which can cause Parkinson’s disease, a brain disorder that leads to problems with movement and thinking.

BUSM researchers looked at short-term effects of flavoring chemicals used in tobacco products like e-cigarettes on endothelial cells, or cells that line the blood vessels. The researchers noticed that when blood vessels were exposed to flavoring additives, normally released chemicals to promote blood flow were decreased and increased inflammation, indicators of short-term toxicity. They also found that endothelial cells from smokers showed the same toxicity as those treated with flavoring chemicals.

“Our findings show that flavoring additives themselves were directly toxic to blood vessels and have adverse effects that may have relevance to cardiovascular toxicity long-term similar to combustible cigarettes,” explained corresponding author Jessica Fetterman, PhD, assistant professor of medicine.

These findings appear in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.

■ Contact Sports Associated with Lewy Body Disease, Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms, Dementia

There is mounting evidence that repetitive head impacts from contact sports and other exposures are associated with the neurodegenerative disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and dementia. A new study suggests that contact sports athletes may also be at increased risk for Lewy Body Disease, which can cause Parkinson’s disease, a brain disorder that leads to problems with movement and thinking.

Since CTE was first described in “punch drunk” boxers in the 1920s, scientists have hypothesized that the motor symptoms that appear in a minority of CTE cases, including tremors, slowness, and difficulty walking, were caused by CTE pathology.

But a new study suggests that those motor symptoms are instead caused by a separate disease, now also linked to contact sports participation, called Lewy Body Disease (LBD). LBD, which can lead to Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, is associated with problems with movement, cognition, depression, sleep, and visual hallucinations. This newfound relationship between contact sports and LBD appears to be independent of CTE pathology.

“We found the number of years an individual was exposed to contact sports—including football, ice hockey, and boxing—was associated with the development of neocortical LBD, and LBD, in turn, was associated with parkinsonism and dementia,” explained corresponding author Thor Stein, MD, PhD, neuropathologist at VA Boston Healthcare System and BUSM assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine. n Winter 2019 | bumc.bu.edu

RESEARCH AWARDS ■ Bob Woodruff Foundation Re-Extends Its Commitment to Veterans and Their Partners For the third year, the Bob Woodruff Foundation has made a grant to BUSM for the continued expansion of Strength at Home, a nationwide program to prevent and treat intimate partner violence in veteran populations.

Professor of psychiatry Casey Taft, PhD, leads Strength at Home, an intervention his team developed in 2008 to address the high rates of trauma-related violence in intimate relationships in which one or both partners have served in the military. Since 2010, after Dr. Taft and colleagues demonstrated the effectiveness of Strength at Home in a randomized clinical trial (the only such trial to validate an intimate partner violence intervention), the US Department of Veterans Affairs has promoted adopting the program throughout its 152 medical centers across the country.

“While the VA has championed the rollout of Strength at Home and has provided instrumental coordination and cooperation throughout the VA,” Dr. Taft says, “it has not been able to allocate the funding needed to implement the program at its sites. The support of the Bob Woodruff Foundation has been critical to bringing this program to our nation’s veterans.”

Since 2016, the Bob Woodruff Foundation has supported the Strength at Home program in 27 VA medical centers and Strength at Home services for 486 veterans. Foundation grants have allowed Dr. Taft and his colleague, Suzannah Creech, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry at Dell Medical School (UT Austin), to train service providers to lead Strength at Home at their VA medical centers. In addition, the foundation is funding the expansion of a train-the-trainers program, through which Drs. Taft and Creech are teaching regional trainers to instruct local providers in initiating Strength at Home—an approach that will be critical for establishing the program at all VA Medical Centers by 2021 and for future program sustainability.

Strength at Home’s key goals include teaching participants to communicate more effectively, express feelings underlying anger, and de-escalate difficult situations. The program is unique in addressing the trauma that is often significant in people with a history of violent behavior, and in utilizing an approach that is typically not used by the majority of domestic violence programs.

According to Dr. Creech, program results to date have been promising. “We’re seeing significant reductions in physical and psychological aggression, PTSD symptoms, and alcohol misuse. These outcomes indicate that the program has successfully advanced from research to practice and is improving the lives of our veterans and their families,” he points out.

Terence Keane, PhD, professor of psychiatry and director of the Behavioral Sciences Division of the National Center for PTSD, works with Dr. Taft at the VA Boston Healthcare System. “We are 20

delighted and grateful for the ongoing commitment by the Bob Woodruff Foundation to address this manifestation of trauma in our veterans. There are many factors that are essential to a successful reintegration into civilian life,” Dr. Keane says. “Healthy relationships and families are so important to well-being for all of us, and uniquely so for veterans who are transitioning to the next chapter of their lives.”

This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which is dedicated to ensuring that impacted post-9/11 veterans, service members, and their families are thriving long after they return home.

■ BU Receives Grant to Assist Scientists in Training for Career Transitions In an effort to broaden professional development opportunities for graduate and postdoctoral trainees, BUSM will develop a software application (app) that will enable identification and sharing of these opportunities with local institutions.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund, which supports research and education in biomedical sciences, will provide the funding via the Career Guidance for Trainees program. Designed to support pilot projects that enable better approaches to prepare graduate students and postdoctoral researchers for successful careers in the biomedical sciences, the program will seek opportunities across a wide spectrum of biomedical science careers—including academia, industry, business and administration, communications, law, policy, and teaching—through the $50,000 grant, “Training Opportunities to Augment Learning” (TOTAL).

“Institutions that offer graduate and postdoctoral training in the biomedical sciences are increasingly concerned with preparing their trainees for a wide range of professional opportunities. Our hope is that this new app will assist our trainees as they explore options and build skills to achieve their career goals,” explained Barbara M. Schreiber, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and co-PI on the NIH-funded Boston University’s Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BU’s BEST) award.

“Many institutions, including BUSM, have developed an array of offerings, including formal coursework, workshops, seminars, career panels, site visits to industry sites, and internships. However, in locations where multiple institutions offer these activities, there is considerable duplication of effort, and pooling resources is a means by which we can expand programming,” added Linda E. Hyman, PhD, professor of microbiology and associate provost for Graduate Medical Sciences at BUSM and co-PI on the NIH-funded BU’s BEST award.

Reflections of a CEO: Find Your Pathway

D

r. Rod Hochman (MED’79) has come a long way from his time—as he refers to it—as a six-year BU “meddie.”

Now the president and CEO of Providence St. Joseph Health, a family of organizations serving the western US for more than 160 years, Dr. Hochman leads a company that includes 111,000 caregivers who serve in 51 hospitals, 829 clinics, and hundreds of programs and services in Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

Under his guidance, Providence St. Joseph Health is transforming healthcare through digital innovation, population health, mental health, genomics, whole person care, and outreach to the poor and vulnerable.

He recalls that one of the aspects of BUSM he most appreciated as a student was its emphasis on the community and the geriatric home care visits.

“It took 40 years to realize we were doing the right thing. A lot of the things we are talking about today in terms of social determinants of health were applicable when I was in medical school,” he points out. “BU was on to something, even back then.”

With his 40th college reunion approaching this year, Dr. Hochman is reflective. “You start to think about what your school gave you and where your career is, and there seemed nothing better than helping students with financial aid,” he says.

His recent gift of $100,000 established the Rod Hochman Family Scholarship Fund, which provides annual scholarship awards based on financial need to one or more MD students in good academic standing.

He believes it’s imperative that students make the most of a medical education and not limit themselves by boundaries—or specialties.

“I’m hopeful that, with less debt, people can make decisions that aren’t based on economics, but based on social need and where they can give back the most,” he explains. “Exploring and understanding the different pathways your education brings you can open the door for endless opportunity.

What’s exciting about students graduating today is that they’re becoming tech entrepreneurs, clinicians, consultants, business owners, et cetera—there’s a lot more out there.

today. There are other pathways. Don’t be afraid to take some chances and try different things out.” n

r. Katelin Blackburn (Sargent’14, MED’18) chose Boston University for both undergraduate study and medical school because she wanted to learn from faculty committed to delivering holistic, patient-centered healthcare.

“BU strengthened my passion to effect change,” she explains. “The focus at MED on caring for the underserved fostered my desire to make advocacy work a hallmark of my career as a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine.” As a student, one way she put that training into practice was by mentoring young people with chronic illnesses and researching interventions to curb teen dating violence.

Making a Dream Career in Healthcare a Reality

BUSM Center & Faculty Collaborate with Uniformed Services University to Advance Military Medical Research

T

he Center for Military and PostDeployment Health will play a key role in two Boston University initiatives to advance military medicine. Established at the School of Medicine in 2015 to synergize BU’s interdisciplinary research, clinical innovations, and programming on military medical issues, the center initiated a relationship with Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in 2017 that has led to two significant grants to enhance the health of service members and enable cross-campus collaboration with USU.

“ We are delighted that these grants will support new innovations to improve the well-being of service members as well as enhance research.”

The two 3-year grants, totaling $3.3 million, were awarded through USU’s Transforming Technology for the Warfighter (TTW) program, which is supporting collaborations between USU and Boston-area life sciences researchers to advance technological solutions for the particular medical challenges the military face.

The first project, led by Mark Grinstaff, PhD, distinguished professor of translational research, biomedical engineering, chemistry, materials science and engineering, and medicine, will enable the development and testing of a novel delivery device for Ketamine, a promising anesthetic treatment for depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, commonly experienced by people who have served.

The second project, led by James Galagan, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering and microbiology, will result in the development of wearable biosensors to detect the real-time physiological status of military service members.

Beyond advancing biotechnology, a key goal of the TTW program is to bring together researchers from USU based in Bethesda, Maryland, with the biotech community. Glenn Markenson, MD, director of BUSM’s Center for Military and Post-Deployment Health, will work closely with Drs. Grinstaff and Galagan and USU leaders to advance collaborations focused on entrepreneurship and scientific innovation. These collaborations will include a visiting scholars program, through which USU students and faculty members will work side by side with TTW BU investigators.

“We are delighted that these grants will support new innovations to improve the well-being of service members as well as enhance research being conducted by both Boston University and Uniformed Services University,” said Dr. Markenson.

“We are proud to be working with USU, a leader in the provision of care for men and women who serve, and know that our work at BU will be stronger because of this collaboration.” n

Walmart Foundation Grant Continues to Support Women Veterans

T

he Walmart Foundation continues its support of female veterans with a $250,000 grant to BUSM’s Women Veterans Network (WoVeN), bringing the foundation’s total commitment to WoVeN to $750,000.

Established in 2017, WoVeN is a nationwide system of peer support groups that connects women veterans and provides them with information, education, and resources, as well as social connections with other women veterans. Over the past 40 years, the number of women serving in active duty military has grown rapidly; they currently represent about 15 percent of the armed forces. As the number continues to rise, there is also a growing need to address the unique needs of women veterans and support their successful reintegration to civilian life.

“Before joining WoVeN, I had no idea how to connect with other women veterans. I had been out of the military for

more than 20 years and was trying to cope with major life issues all alone,” said US Marine Corps veteran and WoVeN participant Tina Brice. “Thanks to WoVeN, I have connected with other women veterans nationally and locally, developed new healthy hobbies like mountain biking and completing my first 5K, decreased the stress in my life, and reconnected with family and friends. I am so grateful to WoVeN and the Walmart Foundation for empowering me to take my life back.”

“WoVeN is designed to be a home for women veterans—regardless of when they return from active military service—and to help them form lasting connections with other women veterans,” said Tara Galovski, PhD, WoVeN director and BUSM associate professor of psychiatry. “We are incredibly grateful to the Walmart Foundation for the support they’ve given to this project from day one, and are proud to continue our partnership to

provide ongoing support for the millions of women who have sacrificed so much to serve us.”

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have a long history of supporting veterans, service members, and their families. In 2011, they committed $20 million by 2015 to support veterans and their families with assistance for programs that provide job training, transition help, and education. When they completed the commitment ahead of schedule in May 2014, they renewed it, announcing an additional $20 million through 2019 to support job training, education, and innovative public/ private community-based initiatives that address challenges many veterans face upon returning to civilian life. n Winter 2019 | bumc.bu.edu

Students Thank Donors at Annual Scholarship Dinner

O

n September 20, grateful medical students gathered at the Hotel Commonwealth to meet their scholarship donors for the first time at the annual Scholarship Dinner.

Thanks to the scholarships generous donors have established, every year students who otherwise could not afford a BUSM education can pursue their dream of becoming physicians.

The cost of medical education is a great barrier for many applicants and a significant burden for countless graduates. In fact, the Association of American Medical Colleges reports that, in 2017, nationwide 75 percent of medical students graduated approximately $190,000 in debt.

Medical school affordability and student debt are frequent topics of conversation at BUSM, where the highest fundraising priority is scholarships. The campaign goal—extended through the end of 2019—is $40M for endowed scholarships, of which $24M has been raised to date.

Dean Karen Antman, MD, greeted students and donors over dinner and dessert, then introduced Shawn Tuttle and Susana Benitez (both

MED’18), who spoke about how their scholarships were critical to their ability to attend medical school.

“I have been reliant on the assistance of donors and an administration that values students from all walks of life,” Dr. Tuttle said. “I am incredibly grateful for the assistance and my admission through BU’s seven-year program, as I know my family would not have been able to support me pursuing extra degrees such as a master’s in order to be accepted to medical school. One day, I hope to be like one of you and donate to future students who need someone to give them the chance to pursue their dreams like I did.”

“It is because of the generosity of our donors that dreams like mine come true. I was awarded a wonderful scholarship from the Ralph Edwards Scholarship Fund—Dr. Edwards was a 1952 graduate and established the scholarship fund as an estate gift. Without him and his support, I would not be sharing this evening with all of you tonight,” Dr. Benitez told the assembled guests.

“The experiences and relationships I have formed during my time at Boston University have far exceeded my expectations. The training and character I have developed while here have set me up for success in all my future endeavors. I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your generous contributions to our students, because they truly are a gift that lasts a lifetime.” n

A Doctor’s Mission to Screen Firefighters for Skin Cancer

T

riple Terrier Christine Kannler’s (CAS’96, MED’00, SPH’00) passion for science emerged during an undergraduate sociology course she took called Health and Illness that left her thinking about how education and planning ahead could be used to modify behavior and prevent disease.

Now a dermatologist at Northeast Dermatology Associates, P.C., Dr. Kannler is putting what she learned in the class to use, as her course of study has come full circle with the events of her life.

In July 2015, her brother Peter was diagnosed with Stage 4 esophageal cancer. At the time, he was a firefighter in Chelsea, Mass., an instructor at the Massachusetts Fire Academy, and a member of FEMA, Hazmat, and Urban Area Security teams. “I had known firefighters had a high rate of cardiovascular disease but his cancer diagnosis led me to wonder whether firefighters had a higher risk of getting cancer,” Dr. Kannler explained. “The year my brother was ill, I read every published study on firefighters and cancer.”

Some of the first studies—conducted in Massachusetts in the 1980s—found that the rate of cancer in Boston firefighters was higher than that in the average population.

After her brother’s death, Dr. Kannler began to think about how much effort and money had gone into treating her brother, and how she could help. She contacted the Chelsea and Westwood fire departments and offered to perform free skin cancer screenings that could catch cancer at an early stage before it spread, and at a time when it would be easier to treat and cure. By 2017, she had performed screenings at the Boston Fire Department Wellness Fair and attended union meetings to announce the importance of health education and screenings. In early 2018, she enlisted the help of her mentor and fellow BUSM alum Dr. Donald Grande (MED’73), former BU

dermatology resident Dr. David Greenstein, and other colleagues to screen nearly 700 Boston firefighters over four days.

Since then, she has screened more than 1,400 firefighters at local firehouses and union halls across Massachusetts on weekends and her days off, with the mission of raising awareness about the increase in cancer in the fire service—and emphasizing that skin cancer screening is free, easy, fast, and portable.

“The occupational medicine literature has provided a lot of evidence that firefighters have a greater risk of cancer,” Dr. Kannler said. “We need to educate primary care providers, municipalities, and the health insurance companies so that we can use cancer screenings to offset the increased risk for cancer they face every day at work. The earlier we can catch cancer, the better chance we can beat it.”

She’s done so much for not only the Boston Fire Department, but the Massachusetts State Fire service. She’s dedicated, passionate, and will do anything she can,” agreed Boston Fire Department District Chief Ron Harrington, who added that Dr. Kannler has also been involved in procuring air purifiers for the firehouses.

“I admire her greatly for doing this,” said Dr. Grande. “She’s put tons of hours and work into this. She has two little kids and is practicing medicine, and her efforts are truly appreciated.”

The firefighters she’s screened have reinforced Dr. Kannler’s passion for her mission.

“They are so kind and appreciative. As I was leaving, a firefighter in Saugus said to me, ‘This is the nicest thing anyone has done for us’—and all I did was look at his skin for five minutes,” she recalled. “Firefighters are among the best of us. They are kind, grateful, and literally enter burning buildings to save lives. I’m so happy I can help them.” n Winter 2019 | bumc.bu.edu

BUSM Alumna Honored for Career in Public Health

Humanitarian Award Recipient Discusses Health Outcomes of Black Women

T

he Boston University School of Medicine Alumni Association has honored Cheryl Scott, MD, MPH (MED‘82) with the 2018 Humanitarian Award for her outstanding work in public health both in the United States and abroad.

On September 19, more than 60 students, faculty members, and friends gathered in the Hiebert Lounge to hear Dr. Scott lecture on the health disparities of black women, the research that established a framework for US maternal and infant mortality, and the growing body of literature that examines the important role of racism and chronic stress in the rising rates of maternal and infant death among African American women.

Describing her research as “a real opportunity to help people get to a point where they can take care of their own public health problems and also maintain their own dignity,” Dr. Scott added, “My goal for today is to make you a little more aware of what’s going on right now.”

Her lecture focused on selected health disparities concerning black women, including diabetes, HIV, obesity, hypertension, fibroids, life expectancy, breast cancer, and mortality (according to the research, mortality rates are 43 percent higher among black women than they are for white women). “African American women are twice as likely to get diabetes and life expectancy for African American women is three years less than it is for white women,” she noted.

According to the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, “Black infants in America are now more than twice as likely to die as white infants,” said Dr. Scott. Her research found that infants born to black mothers experienced the highest rates of infant mortality. The research also found that the percentage of low birthweight infants was more than twice as high for black infants compared to white infants from 2006–2016. In addition, preterm births 36

among black women are approximately 50 percent higher than preterm births among white women.

Dr. Scott noted that maternal mortality is rising in the US as it declines in other first-world countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Canada.

However, she pointed out that the bleak experiences of black women in America regarding mortality still outweigh those of white women, and “black women are the ones who have the most pregnancy complications.” The research found that for every 100,000 live births, 43.5 black mothers and 11.7 black infants die.

“It’s still unequal treatment for African American women giving birth,” she said.

Dr. Scott also stressed that education and wealth did not have the expected effect on infant mortality rates and birth outcomes of black women: “It is not just about the money or the education.” In fact, the research in her presentation showed that infant mortality was actually highest among those with a

high school diploma and that college-educated black women still have higher infant mortality rates and lower birth weights than college-educated white women.

She addressed the grave effects that racism has on the health of black women in the US, creating toxic chronic stress, impacting birth and infant health, and resulting in preterm delivery, low birth weights, preeclampsia, and eclampsia.

Regarding institutional racism, she said, “I think it’s going to be really hard, but I do think things are going to change.”

That change may come from the preventive measures Dr. Scott described toward the end of her lecture, which included increasing social support for expectant black women, advocating for educational partnerships, and standardizing systematic data collection on maternal and infant deaths in all 50 states. “We’re helping to make the next generation better,” she emphasized. “Not just African American women. Everybody.” n

Alumnus Shares Inspiring Journey with Medical Students

“F

irst of all, you will never get into Amherst College and you will never be a doctor.”

A high school counselor said those words to Dr. Herman Williams (MED’88), then a high school student with dreams of becoming a physician. They were in sharp contrast to what he heard at home; while there were no physicians in Dr. Williams’ family, they fully supported his goal of a career in medicine.

“They inspired me to dream big,” Dr. Williams said. “My mother always told me, ‘You can always do whatever you want to do in this world. Just pursue it.’”

Dr. Williams, who currently serves as executive vice president and chief clinical officer for Tennessee-based RCCH Healthcare Partners, shared his story with BUSM students and faculty at a November event hosted by Dr. N. Stephen Ober (MED’86), director of BUSM’s MD/MBA Dual Degree program.

“I wanted to help people and be a worldclass doctor,” said Dr. Williams, who oversees all quality, safety, and clinical activities for 18 regional health systems located in 12 states.

He decided not to listen to his high school counselor and was accepted into Amherst College.

After graduating with his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1980, he took a year off before being accepted at BUSM; he still recalls cheering in excitement when he learned the news. He later received a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and MBA from the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In April 1991, when Dr. Williams was an orthopedic surgery resident in Seattle, nothing had prepared him for what happened one day. As he put it, “Everything was perfect until April 28, when I walked onto the basketball floor.”

Six months after his doctor put him on aspirin, Dr. Williams developed an ulcer.

On the day before he was scheduled to see his doctor again, he had a stroke and was sent to the emergency department.

While he was there, he realized how he could move forward; it was at that time that he decided to write a book about his experience as a way to help others.

His book, CLEAR! Living the Life You Didn’t Dream Of, describes the challenges he has faced in life, as well as the philosophy by which he now tries to live: “Every person

Class of ’58 Celebrates 60th Reunion In September, members of the Class of 1958 celebrated their 60th reunion at the Westin Copley Place in Boston, with Barry Manuel (MED’58, CAS’54) and Louis Sullivan (MED’58, HON’90) among those attending.

Dr. Sullivan has devoted his life to diversity, education, and professionalism, holding numerous high-profile positions throughout his distinguished career, including Secretary of Health and Human

Services under President George H. W. Bush (HON’89), Founding Dean and President Emeritus of Morehouse School of Medicine, and Chairman of the National Health Museum. A member of the BUSM Dean’s Advisory Board, he returns to campus often for those meetings as well as special events and programs.

Dr. Manuel stepped down as executive director of the Alumni Office in July

2008 after more than 30 years of service to BUSM and its graduates. The office flourished during his long and productive tenure, which produced one of the highest participation rates for alumni giving among US medical schools and added numerous programs and services that attracted an active and loyal alumni base.

Dr. Manuel retired in 2014. n

When I was a first-year medical student, I remember being moved by the generosity of so many donors to the stethoscope program.

I still have that stethoscope and use it many times each day. I donated to the stethoscope program to ensure first-year medical students feel welcomed, just like I did, into their new and exciting adventure of becoming a doctor.

Why do you continue to give to BUSM? I have always found BUSM to be a welcoming community that strives to provide the finest education possible to medical students. Attending medical school is expensive, so I donate to help relieve that financial burden as much as possible.

Favorite professor or course at BUSM: Definitely physiology with Paul O’Bryan.

I was constantly impressed with his deep understanding of how the human body functions. He was the first person to teach me how to interpret EKGs, something that is obviously critical to me now as a cardiology fellow. He had an impressive ability to take complex concepts and make them easy to understand. Also, I was always amazed by his devotion to BUSM, considering he continued working there despite a very long daily commute from Cape Cod. Fond memory of BUSM: It’s challenging to pick just one memory from four years crammed with life-changing experiences. If I had to pick one, it would be the hours spent hanging out in the student lounge, often spent competing in amateur ping-pong tournaments.

Thanks to a generous donor, during my second year at BUSM we were able to renovate the student lounge and purchase a professional-grade ping-pong table that remains functional today. n

1949 John Caruso Jr. of Lower Makefield, Pennsylvania, on July 26, 2018. Dr. Caruso completed his high school education at Chapman Tech in New London, Conn., in 1943 and went on to pursue a lifetime of learning and service. He attended Harvard as a part of the Navy’s V-12 Program and, in 1945, enrolled in Boston University School of Medicine through the Navy to pursue his passion in healthcare by working toward his MD, which he earned in 1949. John completed his residency in internal medicine at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., before re-engaging in active duty as a medical officer.

Captain Caruso was active in the military during three wars: WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He earned a World War II Victory Medal, National Defense with Bronze Stars, American Theatre of Operations, Naval Resource Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from the service in 1981 and settled his family in Yardley, Pa., where, from 1981 to 1989, he served as medical director at US Steel Fairless Works. Dr. Caruso later took a job at Princeton University in the Plasma Physics Laboratory for the dispensary at the cold fusion plant until his final retirement in 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Solveig, in 2006. He is survived by his five children, Lisa Marie, Cathy Anne, John Eric, Nancy Jean, and Edward Anthony; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

1952 Alan Seymour Cohen, formerly of Newton Center, Massachusetts, on May 1, 2018, in Arizona.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan; three sons, Evan, Andrew, and Robert; and five grandchildren. Dr. Cohen graduated from Boston Latin School in 1943, received his AB at Harvard College in 1947 (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa), and his MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1952, where he was valedictorian and President of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his internship and residency through the Harvard Medical Service of William B. Castle at Boston City Hospital. From 1953 to 1955 he served in the United States Public Health Service, where

he rose to the rank of Senior Assistant Surgeon.

He had a long and distinguished career at Boston Medical Center and established BUSM’s first arthritis section in 1960, which under his direction grew into the Arthritis Center of Boston University and was designated in 1977 by the National Institutes of Health as one of its initial Multipurpose Arthritis Centers. During this time, he trained more than 70 rheumatologists and also founded and directed the BUSM Amyloid Research and Treatment Program. From 1973 to 1992, he was chief of medicine at Boston City Hospital and director of the BCH Thorndike Memorial Laboratory. He held professorships in both medicine and pharmacology and was appointed Conrad Wesselhoeft Professor of Medicine in 1972 and Distinguished Professor of Rheumatology in 1993.

On the national level, Dr. Cohen contributed to the study of rheumatology and was recognized internationally as a pioneering investigator in the scientific and clinical study of amyloidosis. He published a seminal paper in Nature in 1959 describing the structure of amyloid using electron microscopy. His work examined the biochemical nature of the disease, development of an animal model, and immunologic and molecular genetic studies.

His biography includes almost 700 publications and he is the editor or co-editor of 12 books. He received the BUSM Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1975 and the Commissioner’s Distinguished Physician Award of Boston City Hospital in 1991 (the first awardee). He has received honorary memberships to the Italian (1977), Spanish (1978), Brazilian (1978), Finnish (1980), and Irish (first elected honorary member, 1981) Rheumatism Societies, and the Jan Van Breeman Gold Medal of the Dutch Rheumatism Society (1990).

1958 Edmond M. Koury, 86, of Worcester, Massachusetts, on October 11, 2018. A first-generation Lebanese American, he was born in Torrington, Connecticut. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology at the College of the Holy Cross and his MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1958.

After graduating from BU, he began an internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, becoming chief resident two years later.

He completed his training at the VA Hospital in Buffalo, New York, and in 1962 returned to Worcester to start his solo internal medicine practice. By that time, he and his wife Evelyn had three baby daughters.

In Worcester, Dr. Koury had appointments at a number of hospitals, but for most of his professional life he was affiliated with the nowclosed Hahnemann Hospital, where he relished the work. When UMass Medical School was founded, he was appointed an instructor and later an assistant professor. In 1984, Dr. Koury became president of the medical staff at Hahnemann, a one-year post, and was elected chief of medicine, serving in that role for almost six years. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society, and he was active in the Worcester District Medical Society, serving as secretary from 1975 through 1979.

Dr. Koury retired in 1999 after 37 years of practice. He often reflected on his career in medicine and on the doctor-patient relationship, once observing, “At its very best, this relationship involves trust, respect, honesty, ease, and even affection on the part of both parties; the first three are indispensable. The result is a gratifying association between two people that seems to transcend the professional relationship.”

Following his retirement, Dr. Koury took a part-time job as a receptionist at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester for the next 19 years. He enjoyed the work, marveling over the staff who managed the “remarkable resource” and the academics, poets, authors, and playwrights who came there to do their research.

His wife, Evelyn, predeceases Edmond.

He leaves three daughters, Anita Koury and her husband, Theodore Costantino of Boulder, Colorado; Linda Koury of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; and Cynthia Buccini and her husband, Randy Buccini of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; two sisters, Joyce Tamer and her husband, Joseph Tamer, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; and Rosemary Koury of Brockton,

Massachusetts. Edmond also leaves cousins and many friends from his career in medicine, the American Antiquarian Society, and Briarwood Community in Worcester.

1961 Jeanne F. Arnold of Hartland, Vermont, on May 24, 2018. Dr. Arnold graduated from Colby College in 1957 and Boston University School of Medicine in 1961. She married Peter Faulkner Jeffries of Milton, Mass., in 1959. They lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, with their children during Dr. Jeffries’ military service, and then practiced family medicine together in Peterborough, N.H., until 1979. Dr. Arnold was a faculty member at Dartmouth Medical School, BUSM, Maine Dartmouth Family Practice Residency, and Utica Family Practice Residency. Dr. Arnold was recruited to start two Family Medicine Residencies, in Janesville, Wisc., and Malden, Mass. She lectured nationally on medical topics, including specialty choice for medical students, and treatment and prevention of domestic violence and child sexual abuse. Dr. Arnold was the second woman to serve on the Board of the American Academy of Family Physicians. After retirement, she and her husband were active in genealogy and community events in Walpole, N.H. Dr. Arnold is predeceased by daughter Joy and son Robert, and her parents Huldah Vose Arnold and Alfred Fenwick Arnold, of Lincoln, R.I. She is survived by her husband Peter, children Walter (Holly), Jennifer (Amer), John (Sue), Charles (Christine), Arthur (Kim), and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. 1962 Charles R. Meader of Grantham, N.H., on September 22, 2018, after multiple medical issues over several years. He is survived by his wife, Marthe Dyner, an Episcopal priest.

Dr. Meader attended Brown University as a premed student and received his medical degree magna cum laude from BUSM. He completed an internship at Boston City Hospital and a residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic before moving to Norwell, Mass., where he served at the South

Shore Medical Clinic. He and his wife, Roberta Kelly Meader, then moved to Hingham, Mass., with their five children, where he was in private practice for many years. Dr. Meader and Roberta later divorced and he moved his practice to Nashua, N.H., where he married Marthe. The couple lived in Nashua until his retirement from clinical practice, after which they moved to Concord, N.H., where he was a medical consultant in the Social Security Disability Determination Services office of the State Department of Education.

Dr. Meader’s greatest love was his family.

He leaves his adored children, Kelly, Sam, Rob, Betsy (Eschelbacher), and Barbara, of whom he was boastfully proud; Roberta; Marthe; and Corcaigh (the yapping schnauzer). He also leaves his much-loved stepdaughter Suzanne Rebert, his stepson Mark Dyner and his wife Lori Farnsworth; eight grandchildren; sisters Esther Scanlon and Mary Meader Wostrel; brother-in-law Herb Wostrel; daughter-in-law Katherine Meader; two former daughtersin-law Maggie Galasso Meader and Leeanne Fahey Meader; sister-in-law Katrina Schumacher; nephews and nieces; and an extended family across the United States.

1967 Richard J. Blocker of Natick, Massachusetts, in July 2018. Dr. Blocker was the beloved husband of Ellen (Bloom); devoted father of Michael Blocker and his wife Maureen; Deborah Merwitz and her husband Gary; Jeffrey Blocker and his wife Marcy; and Daniel Blocker. Loving grandfather of Caeli and Brigid Blocker, Ally, Brooke, and Carly Merwitz, and Mia and Adam Blocker.

Dear brother of David Blocker and his wife Linda. Fond uncle, cousin, and friend to many. Devoted son of the late Benjamin and Hadassah (Waldman) Blocker.

Dr. Blocker graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1967 and shortly thereafter served in the United States Coast Guard in the public health service. He was a fixture in the Metrowest community as a wellrespected pediatric ophthalmologist for more than 40 years and was also an associate professor of ophthalmology at BUSM. His dedication to helping children with special needs was

seen through his work at Franciscan Children’s Hospital, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center, and Belchertown City Hospital. He and Ellen were among the proud founding members of Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland.

1974 James B. Southard III of Cumberland, Rhode Island, on January 21, 2018. Dr. Southard was the beloved husband of Jean M. (Clauss) Southard. Born in Cold Spring, New York, to the late James B. Southard, Jr. and Adair (Sohst) Southard, he had lived in Connecticut, Johnston, R.I., and Lincoln, R.I., before moving to Cumberland one year ago.

Dr. Southard was a graduate of Taft Academy in Watertown, Conn., and Boston University, where he earned a degree in nursing and a doctorate of medicine. Upon graduation, he became an anesthesiologist at several hospitals, including Hartford and Charlotte Hungerford Hospitals in Connecticut, and at the former Lying-In Hospital, Notre Dame Hospital, Roger Williams Medical Center, and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital (all in Rhode Island) before retiring.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Sharon Southard of Boston; three sons, Matthew Southard (Rebecca), and Nathaniel Southard (Carrie), both of Northfield, Connecticut, and James P. Southard of Boston; two step-daughters, Tamara A. DiRobbio (David MacDonald) of Albion, and Alicia J. Sullivan (Michael) of Woonsocket; two stepsons, Christopher C. DiRobbio (Sheila) of Cumberland, and Michael J. DiRobbio (Amanda) of Framingham; five grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.

1982 Phyllis A. Kephart of Prattsburgh, New York, on February 5, 2018. Dr. Kephart attended Boston University School of Medicine and worked at the VA Medical Centers in Boston and Bath for many years. She worked and retired from the Tri County Emergency Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Woll, her children James Matthew (Lori) Kephart of Mass.; Susannah Lynn (Charles Priest) Kephart; Mary Katherine Moore; Elizabeth Kephart; and Ryah Woll; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. n

1951 Bennett Miller of Atlantis, Florida, writes, “Became a great-grandfather in April. At 94, still playing golf and breaking a hundred! As I look back on my medical school days, those were some of the best days of my life. I practiced medicine, happily, for more than 55 years.

I am still in awe of the BUSM faculty; they devoted their lives to teaching, and more than incidentally contributed to my social and intellectual growth.”

1961 Stafford I. Cohen of Newton, Massachusetts, writes, “In retirement from clinical cardiology, I continue to have a nice time in life. Strong affiliations with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School permit me to remain up to date and relevant by attending cardiac rounds at the hospital and symposiums at the medical school, delivering an occasional formal lecture to Harvard medical students on medical history, and authoring or co-authoring publications, the most recent appearing in the American Journal of Cardiology in August 2018.

A career in medicine stimulates lifelong learning—it helps to stay busy in retirement.”

1962 Charles W. Gorodetzky of Kansas City, Missouri, writes, “Retired five times and still haven’t got it right! After my internship at BCH I went on active duty with the US Public Health Service to fulfill my selective service obligation— that was 1963, and I anticipated a two-year stay.

I was wrong by an order of magnitude; I stayed for 21 years doing research at the Addiction Research Center in Lexington, Ky, an NIH lab.

Along the way, Barbara and I had four children.

I returned to graduate school at the University of Kentucky and earned a PhD in pharmacology, then served as director of the Lexington facility.

In 1984, the lab moved to Baltimore and I retired from the PHS; thus Retirement #1. I then entered the pharmaceutical industry doing clinical drug development research in the general area of CNS. The first stop was Burroughs Wellcome in Research Triangle Park, N.C. I left there in 1990 for a higher-level job at Ciba-Geigy in Summit,

N.J. Since I was over age 50 and worked there for more than five years, that was Retirement #2. After three years at Ciba, the company decided in 1993 to eliminate all executive directors; as part of that layoff we were all granted retirement. So, Retirement #3. After about a year at a small biotech in the San Francisco area, in 1994 I became vice president of CNS clinical research at Marion Merrill Dow (MMD) in Kansas City. In 1998, the Kansas City facility was sold to Quintiles, a very large contract research organization. We were all fired, but offered jobs at Quintiles and given retirement. So, Retirement #4. I became a vice president at Quintiles and midwest medical director. At the end of 2004, Quintiles abolished midwest as a region and I was invited to retire. So, Retirement #5. I have worked as a consultant in pharmaceutical medicine since 2005. We’ve stayed in Kansas City, which has provided us a wonderful quality of life (the symphony, opera, theater, world-class

“My family and I have lived in Israel for the past 15 years or so. I learn Jewish texts during the day and still do nephrology at night. If any of the class of ’67 comes in this direction, please feel free to let me know and we can get together.”

1963 Francis E. Wanat of Palm Coast, Florida, writes, “After 40 years of cardiology practice in Montclair, N.J., I retired to Florida. Enjoyed practice, teaching internists-in-training, and publishing a bevy of case reports. Happy to support the school that gave so much to me.”

1965 Robert F. Kenerson of Winchester, Massachusetts, writes, “I continue my private practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis on Bay State Road in Boston, and in my home town of Winchester, where I am on the staff of Winchester Hospital. It is my 50th year in practice, which I still find intensely interesting. I occasionally teach when invited, and have a few psychiatrists in individual supervision.

1967 Peter M. Glassman of San Antonio, Texas, writes, “My fourth terrorist novel, Ocean City HQ, is a thriller based on how, why, and where terrorists are embedded in the US. Their target cities are Boston, Las Vegas, and Scottsdale.

The President’s problem is designating a combat arm to confront the Islamic extremists and the job falls to US Navy SEALs.” Meyer D. Lifschitz of Jerusalem, Israel, writes,

1968 Bruce W. Lowney of Auburndale, Massachusetts, writes, “Have finally completely retired after 45 years at BUSM and Veterans Hospital. Enjoying the grandkids and playing lots of golf.”

1974 Robert H. Gilman of Ann Arbor, Michigan, writes, “After 31 years of practice in the Boston area and many years of teaching in the Harvard plastic surgery program, I relocated and joined the full-time plastic surgery faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I have been in Michigan for five years, enjoying my role as full-time teacher/clinician/surgeon.

I am also looking forward to my 21st medical mission to Colombia, where the team I lead has operated on 1,091 children with a variety of congenital, traumatic, and disease-related deformities, including cleft lip and palate, congenital hand anomalies, and burn deformities.

1975 Joel A. Roffman of Plano, Texas, writes, “Hello to my classmates! I’m practicing cardiology at the Baylor Plano Heart Hospital. Nancy has put up with me for 42 years, a true miracle. This year, I completed my 21st MS150, a benefit bike ride supporting the Multiple Sclerosis Society.”

1977 Mark G. Siegel of Loveland, Ohio, writes, “A moment of reflection. Thirty-five years of an active orthopaedic practice. The best job in the world. Helping people and improving the quality of life of those who are debilitated. Who thought that it was possible to affect so many people while loving the job and challenges? I truly believe that the ability to bond with someone in their health care and treatment is the most amazing part of the job. I will never forget that someone has trusted their life and future health to my hands and expertise. This is why we go into medicine. Now, time to step back. I am maintaining my license but doing consultation work on physician defense in med mal and as a senior editor for both an online medical

website and academic journal. In my spare time, enjoying life on my ‘gentleman’ farm. I get to play with large and powerful equipment. My wife runs and develops the wildlife refuge and we have lots of rescue dogs to keep me smiling.

1978 Thomas Higgins of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, writes, “I am an interim chief medical officer at CHI-St. Alexius in Bismarck, North Dakota. My sixth book (and third in the Arcadia Images of America series) on Longmeadow was published in July 2018.”

1981 Daniel Romm of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, writes, “We have retired and moved to Chapel Hill. There I have coauthored a book, Escape from Hell, based on the true story of a Syrian political prisoner.”

1983 Alan B. Ettinger of Dix Hills, New York, writes, “Dear Friends: Amazing how many years have gone by since graduating the six-year med program in 1983. My wonderful experience at BUSM led me to pursue an academic career in

neurology. 1984 Robert S. Falcone of Warren, New Jersey, writes, “After working most of my career at Merck & Co. Inc., in 2015 I started a clinical research practice with two partners in central New Jersey. In this short period, Amici Clinical Research has grown to five employees and is presently involved in 10 clinical studies. I find this work incredibly satisfying and valuable in contributing to the future of drug development and healthcare.”

David J. Sherer of Chevy Chase, Maryland, writes, “Enjoying retirement traveling, writing the monthly blog, What Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You for Bottom Line Publications, studying classical piano, and working on my third book, a novel called Into the Ether, due out soon.”

Alumni in Print Becoming Myself: A Psychiatrist’s Memoir Irvin Yalom, MD (MED’56)

His thoughts on his life and growth are an invitation for us to reflect on our own.

Dr. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others; in this memoir, the focus is on himself. He opens his story with a nightmare—he is twelve and riding his bike past the home of an acne-scarred girl. Like every morning, he calls out “Hello, Measles!” hoping to befriend her, but in the dream, the girl’s father makes Dr. Yalom understand that his daily greeting had hurt her.

This was the birth of empathy in Dr. Yalom, and he would not forget the lesson. His thoughts on his life and growth are an invitation for us to reflect on our own.

1985 Scott Greenbaum of Kings Point, New York, writes, “Halozyme, a midsized Biotech on whose Scientific Advisory Board I served a decade ago, is finally releasing Phase 3 data on pancreatic cancer sometime between December and February. Stay tuned—their enzyme makes solid cancer more vulnerable to chemo and immunotherapy. Why did they care what an ophthalmologist thinks? Because Hyaluronidase traditionally was used to spread anesthesia around the eye prior to surgery, and that’s my expertise.”

1986 Ziv J. Haskal of Charlottesville, Virginia, writes, “I’m still surprised at how I, a student who never liked to write, became a 25-year tenured academic with papers, books, lectureships, and editorships (including a paper cited 3,000+ times). Best message is that good mentors can, daily, inspire us (Dr. John O’Connor was my first of many). I just published a textbook, IR Playbook, with a resident as our lead editor.

Also just released a Virtual Reality TIPS (shunt) procedure on YouTube, the future of physician training. Get your Googles on.”

1987 Charles M. Geller of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, writes, “My family and I have settled into suburban Philadelphia living over the past four years. My eldest daughter is now a freshman at Columbia University and my youngest an extremely precocious second-grader. In addition to my responsibilities as chief of cardiac surgery, I was recently appointed associate chairman of surgery for the five-hospital Crozer-Keystone Healthcare System. I have been recognized as a “Top Doctor” each year since my arrival in PA in both Philadelphia and Main Line Today magazines, as well as being the focus of a large ongoing multimedia marketing campaign.”

After 19-plus years of research, clinical care, and teaching, I was promoted to professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and recently was honored with the Joyce R. Tedlow Endowed Chair in the Field of Depression Studies.”

George A. Waters of Medford, Massachusetts, writes, “I can’t believe this fall kicks off our 25-year reunion. It seems like just yesterday, Dick Brown was cruising the halls looking for chum (obscure skit-night reference; remember Dave Foley?).
