Welcome to the 2023 Fall Parade of Homes!

As the President of the Home Builders Association of Columbia, I am thankful for the opportunity to showcase all that our local building industry has to offer. Our community is full of talented contractors who take extreme pride in their crafts. Their experience is exhibited through the quality craftsmanship, intricate details, and unique design elements that can be found in each of their homes. In addition to the amazing efforts of our homebuilders, valuable contributions are also made by local vendors and other individuals who help make these homes a reality.

Our homebuilders have the opportunity to showcase their work thanks to the countless people who help make the Parade of Homes happen. Special thanks to our Parade of Homes committee; our Executive Officer, Jami Clevenger; and all our sponsors who put in a lot of time and effort to make this event a success. We are fortunate to be a part of this wonderful community!

I encourage you to download our new mobile app where you can easily view details and photos of each home, save your favorite features, and create a customized parade route. For more information, visit columbiahba.com/parade-of-homes.

On behalf of the HBA of Columbia, I’d like to thank you for supporting our local homebuilders by participating in this event. Enjoy the Parade!

Growing up, Jeff learned custom homebuilding from his father and grandfather. In 2000, he started Hemme Construction to provide mid-Missouri with quality custom homes. As a fifth-generation home builder, family has always been top priority for Jeff Hemme. Because of his love for family, he finds great joy in building family homes and developing communities that bring people together. Being able to be that helping hand who creates someone a home is so special, and he’s blessed to do it alongside the sixth generation of Hemme builders, his sons Orie and Noah.

At Hemme Construction, we focus on the needs and dreams of people wanting custom homes in and around Columbia, Missouri. We take time to specifically plan every aspect of the building and design process and work with the best contractors and suppliers. We want you to love your home no matter what stage it’s in. We understand that between those four walls, whether built or still in blueprint, is an abundance of memories, love, and laughter. Jeff firmly believes in client referrals and exceeding your expectations. In addition, we offer a 10-year structural builder warranty and a 15-year foundation waterproof warranty on every home we build. With experience, integrity, and attention to detail, Jeff has made Hemme Construction one of mid-Missouri’s premier custom home builders.

How long have you been in the construction Industry and what led you to this path? We’ve been in the business for 17 years. We started as real estate investors but found a passion for the industry and transitioned into building and design.

How large is your construction team, and what are your areas of expertise? We have a small in-house team and a large family of sub-contractors, many of whom we have been working with since the beginning. We like to build in all price points of homes from starter homes to dream homes. What are some recent or notable projects you have completed? We developed and built most of the homes in the Oak Park, Magnolia Falls, Willow Falls and Steeplechase Estates neighborhoods. We have had the opportunity to build beautiful custom homes in Heatherhill Estates as well as awesome smaller homes in Willow Falls and attached villas in Vintage Falls.

How do you stay updated with the latest industry trends and advancements? We are always following a variety of social media accounts and traveling to interesting locations to track new ideas and trends. We also communicate with our vendors regularly to learn about new ideas and products available in our industry.

Do you implement eco-friendly or sustainable building practices in your projects? Our subcontractors and vendors are always helping us find products and solutions to help our homes be as eco-friendly yet affordable as possible. Tell us a bit about your family. Scott and Kara have been married for 25 years and have two wonderful children, Kate and Ben. We are lucky enough to have all our parents retired in Columbia as well.

Is there anything else about your business and/or yourself that we should know? In addition to neighborhood development and new construction homes, we are also offer real estate brokerage services and single-family homes for rent.

How long have you been in the construction Industry? 9 Years in the Columbia area with over 30 plus years of combined experience.

What made you get into the construction industry? Home building has been the family business for as long as I have been around. It started with my grandfather, continued with my mother and now home building continues to be a family business with myself and brother Parker.

How large is your construction team, and what are your areas of expertise? We have a team of 13 at Girard Homes with all different areas of expertise to help our clients all the way from the initial purchase of a lot to the completed home that they will enjoy for years to come.

What are some notable projects you have completed in the past? Our most recent Old Hawthonre model home was completed earlier this year and it is loaded with some stunning upgrades and finishes! Located at 1604 Morning Dove Dr. Have you implemented any innovative construction technologies or practices in your projects that you are excited about? Our most recent innovative implementation is actually in the planning and design phase of our home building process. Our draftsman builds a 3D model of every custom home that we build complete with the customers actual selections and finishes. This allows our clients to easily visualize their new home before ever even breaking ground!

How do you stay updated with the latest industry trends and advancements? We do market research, client behaviors ie: there are more people working from home than ever before. So, a designated relaxation room is essential after a long day’s work. Having separate rooms for rest, work, entertainment, etc. is important to one’s mental & physical health.

How long have you been in the construction Industry? 30 years total. 21 years independently as Hansman Custom Homes.

What made you get into the construction industry? I started with a part-time job during high school and college. I discovered I enjoyed the work — and being outside — so I stuck with it.

How large is your construction team, and what are your areas of expertise? There are 2 of us, plus some great sub-contractors. I manage sites and schedule while Monica takes care of selections and customers.

What are some recent or notable projects you have completed? We just finished a roof off of a full second floor addition with a second phase partial remodel of the main floor, while maintaining the livability and integrity of the existing space. A couple of past projects that were interesting: a wooden barn rebuild after a fire; then the same customer had us pull part of the main floor off their house, add on, remodel and rebuild. Do you implement eco-friendly or sustainable building practices in your projects? We use a lot of manufactured and engineered wood products throughout our homes. From framing to flooring and cabinets. High efficiency HVAC systems as well as tankless water heaters are common. Of course energy star appliances and led lighting are standard. We also emphasize reducing waste and reusing as much as possible. Concrete, framing, and other exterior work is a great time to reuse and reduce waste.

Tell us a bit about your family. Monica and I have been married 18 fantastic years and have two wonderful sons, one is starting 4th grade, and the other is a brand new driver starting 10th.

Is there anything else about your business and/or yourself that we should know? We are a local business partnering with local suppliers and sub-contractors to provide one-on-one service.

What made you get into the construction industry?

I had a really lousy experience buying my own home. I was disappointed that something so huge in a person’s life could be such a poor experience. I decided then that I wanted to make sure others had better experiences when they went through what should be a very exciting, even fun, process of buying or building a new home. How large is your construction team, and what are your areas of expertise? Our construction team in Columbia consists of a team of roughly five people. However, our Columbia team is supported by an even larger team in the St. Louis area, including architecture, purchasing and estimating, and more.

Can you provide a brief overview of some of your recent construction projects? We have a number of communities we’re building around the Columbia and Ashland areas. We have a model home and available homesites at The Gates in Columbia, as well as Breckenridge Park, Old Hawthorne, and The Brooks. In Ashland, we have a model home and available homesites at Forest Park and are also building in South Wind.

How do you stay updated with the latest industry trends and advancements? Our goal is to always stay in front of the changing industry and ensure we’re offering our customers what they want in their homes, both in terms of options and sound, quality construction. We work closely with the HBA, attending classes and seminars, meet regularly with our vendors and products reps, all so we can understand what’s next in new home construction.

Is there anything else about your business that we should know? Lombardo Homes is new to the Columbia area. I understand that new can make people cautious or hesitant, however, we’re not new to homebuilding. Lombardo has been in business for over 60 years in multiple states. We’re a family owned business and our customers remain our number one priority.

Do You Know How to Make Your Home More Livable?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a resounding effect on the way people live — not only in how they interact with those around them, but potentially in how they view their homes as well. More time at home may be changing the way individuals think about tangible elements such as increasing their capacity to work from home, as well as the not-so-tangible elements, like indoor air quality, noise reduction and overall home performance.

High-performance homes can provide increased comfort, improved air quality, reduced noise, and lower energy and water bills, which can benefit the health, well-being and finances of you and your family. Your current home may not provide these elements, but investing in remodeling or a new home could ensure they’re incorporated going forward. Asking the right questions will help ensure you’re getting the types of features you’re looking for in a remodel or your next new home.

For example, you may notice now that it seems like the AC or heater is running all the time, or fluctuations in temperature as you move from room to room throughout the day. Or maybe you’re using more energy and water during the daytime, so you’re increasingly concerned about how this will affect your utility bills. Raising these types of concerns with a home builder or remodeler can help them identify the right high-performance solutions for your current or future home.

SOLUTIONS MAY INCLUDE:

Products and building materials to increase energy efficiency, such as:

■ Smart thermostats to help regulate temperature;

■ High R-value insulation in floors, walls and ceilings to retain heat within home;

■ Weatherstripping around windows and doors to avoid air leakage, which can overwork air conditioning units;

■ WaterSense-labeled fixtures to reduce water usage; and

■ Appropriately sized heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment to comfortably and efficiently heat and cool your home.

Products and building materials to improve ventilation and air quality, such as:

■ Smart appliances to improve efficiency;

■ HVAC systems with sensors and automation to help regulate circulation; and

■ Sustainable building materials that use fewer chemicals and irritants.

For more information, including specific questions to ask your home builder, visit homeperformancecounts.info. Home Performance Counts is a joint initiative between the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) to help homeowners better understand the rapidly growing high-performance home marketplace.

5 Reasons to Consider a Career in Construction

In the United States, women make up about half of the workforce. However, only a small percentage of women work in the residential construction industry. Among those women who are working in the industry, a majority have a fulfilling career with opportunities for advancement and competitive pay. Women in construction also have the satisfaction of knowing that they are building homes that make a difference in people’s lives.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) celebrates Professional Women in Building Week (Sept. 11-15) to raise awareness and recognize the essential role of women in the construction industry. Here are some reasons why women should consider creating a career path in construction:

NUMEROUS JOB OPPORTUNITIES.

The number of unfilled construction jobs was more than 300,000 in June 2023. An NAHB survey found labor shortages in various construction jobs, including framers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and bricklayers. In addition, the residential construction industry is one of the few sectors where demand for new workers rose during the pandemic.

COMPETITIVE SALARY.

A pay gap exists between men and women across most industries. On average, women in the United States earn approximately 80 cents for every dollar a man earns. However, the gap is much smaller in the construction trades. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women in the construction industry earn 95 cents for every dollar a man earns.

SCHOLARSHIPS.

Funding is available through numerous programs for students interested in or pursuing residential construction opportunities. For example, NAHB Professional Women in Building and the National Housing Endowment have scholarships and grants available for students seeking to further their education in housing industry related programs.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORK.

There is a growing community of women in construction willing to mentor and share insights with women entering the field. NAHB has a strong network of women in construction through its vast resources and opportunities.

A SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT.

A career in the trades brings a sense of satisfaction for completing high-quality work that contributes to home building and ultimately helping to fulfill the American Dream.

If you are a woman with a passion for creating, problem-solving and life-long learning, consider pursuing a career in construction. The industry is open and welcoming, with many opportunities for gaining career success. For more information on career opportunities in our area, contact Jami Clevenger at jami.clevenger@columbiahba.com.
