A Closer Look: Dr. Brad Sloan

BY KELSEY GILLESPY Simply glancing around The Sloan Clinic at the Capital Region Medical Center shows people what drives the man it’s named after.

From inside a picture frame, a five-yearold boy with a bicycle smiles at new patients. A professional bass fisherman hangs beside him on the wall of fame. Athletes line the corridor walls, as they have all sent their photo to the beloved man who healed them, Dr. Brad Sloan. There’s no such thing as merely being a patient at the Sloan Clinic. Instead, you become family. So he includes both of his passions, sports and family, into his practice.

Dr. Sloan is a board certified family practice physician, yet he also completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine under the mentorship of two Olympic team physicians. After working with United States Olympic athletes in Colorado Springs, Co., he returned to Missouri in 2004. For nearly a decade now, he has perfected the unique combination of family practice and sports medicine at his clinic at the CRMC. “We work with athletes of all ages, but also anyone with aches and pains,” he explains.

“I love the family practice, but I also love sports, so it’s just a good combination.”

Dr. Sloan’s love of sports dates back to his childhood. “Sports have always been a huge part of my life,” he recalls. “I grew up in Columbia and participated in all sorts of sports.” He didn’t just participate, he excelled in them, starring as starting quarterback and captain of the Rock Bridge High School football, basketball, and track teams. After marrying a Jay cheerleader, Sloan uprooted to Jefferson City where his clinic now thrives. Humbly, he states, “It was pretty neat getting to be a part of that, and now at this point in my life getting to continue working with athletes.”

As a former athlete, he is no stranger to the need for sports medicine. During his athletic career, he suffered concussions,

shoulder and knee injuries, sprained ankles, and broken fingers, all of which he treats now. “Unfortunately, I was kind of accident-prone and I got injured quite a bit in sports,” he admits. “Having a lot of injuries as a former athlete really allows me to empathize with all the injuries that these athletes are going through.”

Dr. Sloan continues his impressive experience in sports as the team physician for South Callaway and the Lincoln Blue Tigers. However, The Sloan Clinic works with all patients requiring non-operative orthopedic attention. For the past eight years, the clinic has provided an extremely high-tech, non-invasive healing technique called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). PRP is so highly coveted and respected that longtime L.A. Lakers superstar, Kobe Bryant, has traveled to Germany to receive it.

Instead of surgery, PRP uses platelets, the body’s natural healers, to mend injuries.

“Wherever there’s an injury, we inject the platelets directly into that site and then they heal the body as it would normally.

It’s pretty cool stuff,” he says. Incredibly, he also has answers for patients who do require surgery. Although Dr. Sloan is non-operative, he works with the University of Missouri Orthopedic Institute, and so, has world-class surgeons at his disposal.

Interestingly, everyone on staff at the Sloan Clinic is a former athlete. They understand the instantaneous nature of inju-

ries and the need for a speedy recovery, so they intentionally leave spots open throughout the day for walk-in appointments. “We really work to get patients in quickly without having a lot of waiting,” Dr. Sloan states. “That’s another thing about our clinic we’re proud of.”

Now a father to three of his own athletes, Dr. Sloan is excited to continue a sports-minded family. His oldest plays football at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, while his 8-year-old plays soccer, and his 3-year-old dances.

He says with a smile, “We’re just trying to continue the tradition of sports and activities.”

For Donald and Jane Reed, Thanksgiving brings more than family gathered around a stunningly set table laden with turkey, steaming dishes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. It ushers in the time of year when they lovingly bring out Christmas decorations and turn the first floor of their home into an artistic holiday wonderland.

The day after Thanksgiving, while many women are braving the shops and crossing off gifts on their shopping lists, Jane begins a three-day house transformation. Her love of design began at a young age. “I was about 8 or 9,” Jane says. “I just love to do it.”

Out comes greenery: swags, wreaths and items for the mantel. Out come nutcrackers, antique drums and vintage Santas,

which she uses to create what she describes as a traditional-style design. Out come the unique ornaments created by artisan friends such as Jefferson City resident Deen Weidler and Radko ornaments they’ve collected over the years. “It’s just what I like,” she says of her pieces and how she decorates. “For me, more is better.”

Jane’s lifelong love of the arts lends itself to a home full of holiday flair. “I love unbelievably creative handcrafted pieces,” she says.

Some she’s created herself; others have come from talented people she knows. One tree in their home is decorated solely with the Christmas ornaments she received when working as a docent at the Governor’s Mansion.

W h e n d e c o r at i n g for the holidays, Jane hardly does the same thing twice. “I’d probably die if I had to do that,” she says.

For Jane, it’s truly an artistic outlet, so much so that she usually decorates at least three other homes for the holidays. But what makes her home special are the pieces her family has come to know and love.

In their entryway, a standing bear greets guests. Their kids and grandkids have patted the bear so often that some of it has worn off. Jane also takes great care when decorating the nearly 8-foot-tall heirloom 1914 Herschede hall clock and other antiques adorning their home. She uses eclectic pieces they’ve collected over time to create vignettes throughout the house.

Each year, Jane enjoys creating a statement piece with the mantel: lots of greenery, twinkling white lights and Christmas ribbon. Her results can be called muted traditional yet not overly frilly and feminine. “Don is way OK with the decorations,” Jane says of her husband's thought on the annual holiday designs.

“It’s not a hardship,” Jane says, “though it’s not nearly as fun taking it down.”

When it’s time to come down, Don and Jane pack the larger pieces back into the basement and put the ornaments and smaller pieces into empty drawers throughout the house. “I’d love to say I wrap them all and pack them away in boxes, but I don’t,” Jane says.

The putting away might not be as fun, but by the following November, Jane’s winter wonderland is sure to emerge again. “I am a Christmas lady,” she says. “No doubt about that.” JC 42 | November/December 2013

PracticalMagic The Harrises’ classic Christmas makes memories to treasure.

In early November, Jillian Harris sets aside one day to haul Christmas decorations down from the attic. That’s because the task requires transporting at least 15 huge Tupperware storage containers filled with all the tools necessary to transform the Harris home into a Christmas wonderland.

After ordering fresh greens and live trees online, Jillian takes stock of what she has and of what she needs to add to her collection for the coming year.

“Each year, I add something,” she says.

“I see a room where I can do a little more, or we travel, and I see things that inspire me.”

Now that Jillian and her husband, James, have lived in their house for five years, she has the decorating down to a science, and in the week following Thanksgiving, she puts each nutcracker, fresh wreath, candle and ornament in place.

“I grew up with a grandmother who absolutely loved Christmas,” she says. “She deco-

rated everything, everywhere, and I remember how much fun and how magical it was.

You really felt like Christmas arrived when you got there. My whole family celebrates here now, and I like to recreate what my grandmother did for us. I try to give that same magical feeling that she always did for us.”

Jillian says both she and James lean toward the classic and traditional in everything they do, and they’ve approached their

Christmas decorating in the same way. Silver accents highlight true reds and greens, but style takes a backseat to accessibility and fun.

“Our tree is not a decorator tree,” Jillian says. “It’s very fun and has things we’ve collected from our childhoods and from everywhere we’ve traveled. We both like to pick up ornaments and decorations when we go places. Our tree is filled with a lot of memories for us.”

Even the way they attach ornaments to their two trees evokes special memories of their travels. During a trip to Paris after the couple was first married, they saw a Christmas tree covered in ornaments tied on with ribbon. Jillian says the image stuck with her, and she uses the same technique on her own tree. In addition to creating a fun, whimsical look, it makes it difficult for little hands to remove decorations from the tree.

Although Jillian is a one-woman show when it comes to decorating, it seems that Margaux has also been bitten by the Christmas bug and is developing her own passion for Christmas.

“She likes to get out the ribbons, organize them by color and thread them through the ornaments, and then it is her job to undo them and put them back at the end of the season,” Jillian says. “She also decorates her own tree in her room with remnants from the Christmas boxes and with things she makes at school.” JC

Science Matters Dr. Timothy Hanrahan, assistant professor of physical education, and Dr. Vern Hart, assistant professor of physics, have joined the Williams Woods University faculty. Hanrahan, who earned his Doctor of Philosophy at Walden University, comes to WWU from Columbia Public Schools, where he was a health and physical education teacher. He is an American Red Cross-certified instructor, with additional certificates in first aid and CPR. He also holds lifetime certificates in both physical and health education. Hart, who earned his Ph.D. in physics from Utah State University, has authored numerous refereed journal articles and conference papers and is a member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the American Physical Society and Sigma Pi Sigma.

Year of the Edu-Consumer Why it’s time to fire your marketing person and hire a teacher

As an adjunct professor and business owner, I’ve spent many sleepless nights and endless days studying what’s going on in the world of business. And if you’re ready to embrace some shifts in 2014, your business will experience major growth.

Change is not easy in today’s economy; most of us are working our rear ends off trying to keep things going. Let’s take a look at what’s happening around us.

Only the strong will survive. I call this the year of the edu-consumer. The past three years have brought about changes in our world, but the biggest change has been in the behavior of consumers. Consumers no longer wait to learn about a product from a traditional salesperson. They are searching for it online, and if you are not prepared, they will click off your site and go somewhere else. Here are some facts you must know: • In 2010, shoppers needed 5.3 sources of information before making a purchase decision. In 2011, shoppers needed 10.4 pieces of information before making a purchase decision.

• From 2009 to 2011, American females’ use of voice minutes on mobile phones decreased by 12 percent. During the same period, their text messages sent and received increased by 35 percent.

• In business-to-business, customers will contact a sales rep only after independently completing 60 percent of the purchasing decision process.

This source of information is impacting organizations and how people interact with them in every way. Companies need to find a way to position themselves as experts within their field. Consumer trust is key; we need to change the marketing hype to educating the consumer. Let’s look at some data that indicates how much consumers distrust organizations. Company experts are trusted by 66 percent of people, regular employees are trusted by 50 percent, and CEOs are trusted by 38 percent. Ouch!

During the past four years, I’ve been researching how the human mind works in leadership and in relation to searching for information on the Internet. Consumers must be able to answer their own questions online. Consumers go through three phases: learn, shop and buy.

Your website design must educate consumers about your products/services, with only one topic per page. Remember to answer their questions, offer solutions and even tell them what to look for when shopping your competition. By 2014, there will be more mobile Internet users than desktop Internet users. Operation Bugle Boy OBB brings famed keynote speaker and youth programs to honor local heroes this Veterans Day.

B y H e at h e r S h i e l d s In early October, a meeting began with Operation Bugle Boy 2013 advisory board member Chris Jarboe going around a table and introducing attendees at a meeting he called historic. What began 12 years ago as a post-9/11 patriotic service project by Jefferson City and Helias high school students had grown into those two schools, along with Blair Oaks and Calvary Lutheran high schools, coming together to continue the tradition of patriotic service projects that honor United States military veterans.

This year, Operation Bugle Boy 2013 features an evening full of events such as a memorabilia display, a Wall of Honor, Letters to Heroes, the Patriot Tree and more. Only veterans and their guests can attend the banquet and listen to the evening’s keynote speaker, David L. Beamer. Beamer’s son Todd Beamer was a passenger on United Flight 93 on 9/11 and is remembered as an American hero for his sacrifice in the defense of our country and for his now immortalized phrase, “Let’s roll.”

“I’m coming for two groups,” Beamer says, “the military and the youth. I’m not a veteran, but I’m certainly a beneficiary of their service.

“It’s an opportunity to thank the military for all they have done — and do — and the sacrifices they’ve made,” he adds about his attendance at the dinner and program, “and to encourage the young people about how they can make a difference in their lives and the world.”

The keynote speaker for Operation Bugle Boy 2013, David L. Beamer is the father of Todd Beamer, a passenger aboard United Flight 93 on 9/11 who is remembered as an American hero.

For community members who cannot attend the dinner and program on Nov. 7, Beamer and the honored guests will also be part of OBB’s free event on Nov. 8, Flight 93 and the American Spirit at Concord Baptist Church.

Helias teacher and coach Dan Campbell sat in that October OBB meeting and told the teens in attendance: “I know how it feels to be deployed, to be away from home during the holidays and to get a package. It matters.”

As part of Operation Bugle Boy 2013, a limited number of 10th anniversary Operation Merry Christmas CDs will be for sale. Operation Merry Christmas was a holiday and patriotic music CD performed by Jefferson City High School students, intermixed with veterans discussing what

it was like to be stationed far from home for the holidays. The original service project sent CDs to 1,500 military members stationed all over the world, and the proceeds from sales of the remaining CDs were donated to the American Red Cross and the United Services Organization. This year, proceeds from anniversary CD sales will be divided between the Central Missouri Honor Flight and the Jefferson City Veterans Council.

“I’ve had the luxury to work with students like this,” Jarboe says about the dedicated student representatives attending the historic meeting he was leading. “But this is not about us; it’s all about the veterans.” JC Jefferson City Magazine | 73

Being a small-business owner certainly has its risks and challenges. As a merger and acquisitions associate and a banker, Mike Burbank and Nick DeSimone were privy to the hardships of owning a business. But they also had real insight into the great rewards of entrepreneurship — and they decided it was a risk worth exploring.

“Our third partner, Jason Otke, and his partners at Dick Otke Construction Co., had experience building tunnel car washes throughout the United States,” DeSimone says. “Jason felt this type of car wash might be something that Jefferson City may benefit from.”

According to DeSimone, the men were attracted to the idea of a tunnel car wash for a few key reasons; at the time, Jefferson City didn’t have a car wash in that format, the speed was unbeatable, and the service was unparalleled. They got to work gathering information and researching the feasibility of opening the doors to a car wash.

In August 2006, their vision became reality when Kwik Kar Wash and Detail opened for business.

“We have been very fortunate to have grown our business even through some of the worst financial times that the country has ever seen,” he says. “I attribute the growth of our business to hard work, perseverance, an exceptional staff and the desire to be good at what we do.”

Since Kwik Kar Wash’s inception in 2006, Jefferson City has embraced and supported the business, which, as of this past March, became the only locally owned and operated full-service car wash in Jefferson City.

And just as Jefferson City has embraced the car wash, the men behind Kwik Kar Wash have embraced the city by making a firm commitment to give back to the community that supports them. Upon starting the business, they started the Kwik Kar Community Care Fundraising Program, which allows organizations to raise funds through the sale of car wash services.

S m a l l b u s i n e ss e s create jobs for the community and have a vested interest in the areas they operate, DeSimone says, because their success depends on it. And those who patronize locally owned establishments allow that community support to continue.

DeSimone describes a reciprocal relationship in which consumers spend locally, which allows those local businesses to then invest back into the community. “When dollars are spent on goods and services that are not provided by local business people, it adversely affects community strength,” he says. “Those dollars leave the community and usually do not come back. The dollars you spend at Kwik Kar stay in the Jefferson City community.”

Although Burbank and DeSimone were not born in Jefferson City, they relocated with their families to the area in their early teens.

Between them, they graduated from Jefferson City High School, Helias High School, the University of Missouri and Lincoln University. Since then, they have become thoroughly ingrained in the community. Burbank’s wife, Sara, teaches at Immaculate Conception, and DeSimone’s wife, Carrie, teaches at Belair.

Review of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory, One Christmas and The Thanksgiving Visitor

I

By Claudia Schoonover I was fortunate enough some years ago to help someone on the library’s reference desk who was searching our shelves for these stories. The patron explained to me that she read them every year around the holidays. I thought how special the stories must be for someone to make a point of reading them every year. I decided to read them myself three years ago, and I can honestly say reading Capote’s stories is one of the best gifts I’ve given myself. I don’t remember the patron who recommended them, but if I could, I would love to thank her for sharing her holiday tradition with me, which has now become one of mine.

Novelist and playwright Truman Streckfus Person was born in 1924 in New Orleans to a salesman and a 16-year-old beauty queen.

His parents divorced when he was 4 years old, and he was then raised by relatives for a few years in Monroeville, Ala. His mother was remarried to a successful businessman, moved to New York, and Truman adopted his stepfather’s surname. Capote said some of his hap-

piest memories are from his childhood in Alabama and with his beloved Aunt Sook.

This single volume gathers Capote’s three most beloved holiday stories, short memoirs and tributes that carry the “strong, delicious scent of holiday nostalgia.” When reading these short stories, I felt as if I were literally transported back to a time when life was simpler and to a place where people like my own grandparents lived their lives.

Capote is 7 years old in The Christmas Memory and shares an elaborate tale of he and his aunt and their holiday fruitcakemaking adventures. One cannot keep from laughing out loud when they contact the local moonshiner about buying whisky for their cakes and, instead of taking their handfuls of saved pennies, he asks for “one of them cakes in exchange.” Another funny moment is when Capote and Sook are making their recipient list and include President and Mrs. Roosevelt. They muse about the possibility of their fruitcake being served at the White House Christmas dinner.

The Thanksgiving Visitor is another delightful tale of the local bully being invited to Capote’s home for Thanksgiving and the drama that ensues. One Christmas is a more sobering tale of young Capote being forced to spend Christmas away from his beloved Sook and Alabama clan and instead travels to New York to visit the father he does not know. It’s a heartbreaking story with moments of humor infused throughout. These stories are among my very favorites, and I hope if you give them a chance, they will become part of your Christmas tradition, too. JC

By day, David Baker, Jay Pelzer, Tom Reichart, Quentin Rice and Mike Kivett are regular guys: husbands, fathers and working men. But when their day jobs are over, it’s time for this quintet to rock out, ’80s style, as The Cherry Pistols.

Individually, the members of The Cherry Pistols have been fixtures in Jefferson City’s music scene for more than a decade; they’ve played gigs with one another and with other musicians here and there over the years. A year and a half ago, the time seemed right to focus on putting together a quality band with a unique product to entertain Jefferson City’s music lovers.

It seems that in a short time, this ’80s tribute band has successfully reached its goal. It was voted Best Band in Jefferson City for 2013, an honor that validated the group’s creative work and effort.

“It’s pretty cool,” Pelzer says of the recognition. “We’re all pretty excited about it. We worked really hard this summer to put together a good product and to brand ourselves and our product. Being voted Best Band felt like a big payoff for working hard over the last five months.”

The Cherry Pistols are especially proud of their ’80s video dance parties: a combination of music videos and live performance by the band. The most recent dance party was held in early November at The Spot.

“We put together a rock block of ’80s music videos that everybody remembers and everybody likes, like Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson — as long as you can dance to it or it is a funny video,” Pelzer says. “We’ll play the videos for the first half of the night, then that video dance party transitions into a two-hour live set by The Cherry Pistols.”

E v e n t o r n a d o warnings and an impending storm couldn’t keep the crowds away from one video dance party, and subsequent dance parties have garnered even larger crowds. The fascination with ’80s music doesn't surprise Pelzer, who says the ’80s were characterized by danceable music with great beats.

“It was such a colorful era and is a lot of fun for people to revisit…” Pelzer says.

“We’re all in our 30s and can remember the ’80s as kids. It’s fun to revisit the stuff we had when we were little — you appreciate it a bit more, and it is a lot of fun to play.”

A lt h o u g h the band’s schedule varies, they typically play two or three gigs each month and can usually be found at The Spot in Jefferson City or at H Toads in Lake of the Ozarks. They’ve recently begun working with a booking agency and have a Thanksgiving eve gig scheduled in St. Louis. Band members have long abandoned their childhood dreams of landing a record deal, but they are excited about performing in Jefferson City and outside of mid-Missouri.

“When you’ve been playing music for half your lives, it is really hard to not play music,” Pelzer says. “Plus, when you have four other awesome guys that are your best friends, that want to play the same stuff you want to play, where you can make a few extra bucks and have people who want to come out and watch and party with you, you can’t help it. For us, it’s a lot of fun.

After joining the sport for the girls, Dave Steinmeyer’s passion for the game has long since transcended girls in cute outfits.

Dave Steinmeyer has been the face of tennis in central Missouri for nearly four decades.

His children, John, Robyn and Laura, were all good players, and that torch has been passed on to his grandchildren.

His family is tennis, but he didn’t grow up in a tennis family. “Most of my childhood was all about basketball and baseball,” Steinmeyer says. Still, “My brother, Harold, was 22 years older than me, and he was pretty much a tennis nut.”

But that’s not really what caught his eye about the game. “There were a group of really nice-looking girls that played at the Webster Groves tennis courts,” he says. “So a friend of mine and I decided it would be 124 | November/December 2013

kind of fun on Friday and Saturday nights to go over and act like we were athletes, play tennis and meet the girls. That’s how I really got started.”

No love lost. That might be how it started, but his passion for the game has long since transcended cute girls in cute outfits.

A f t e r graduating from Webster Groves High School, Steinmeyer spent seven years at his alma mater before working 10 years at Westminster College in Fulton. He came to Jefferson City in 1976 and was head coach of the Jays and Lady Jays for 23 years, during which time he won state championships with the Lady Jays in 1987 and 1993.

At age 78, he’s still going strong and remains a driving force behind tennis in central Missouri while working with kids of all ages at the Jefferson City YMCA. “I have so much fun with it; that’s what drives me,” Steinmeyer says.

“If you get a couple of kids who have some real drive and want to play, it’s fun to be with them.

“Most kids, you have to push constantly,” he continues. “But you have a few kids every year who want to play; you can’t be any good unless you make a commitment every day. I’m constantly preaching and giving lectures on dedication to get the kids motivated to play. I try to make the commitment by being here a lot to make sure they have somebody to play with.”

You could call Steinmeyer the Pete Adkins of tennis. “He was no-nonsense; he told it like it was,” says Matt Morris, the No. 1 player on Steinmeyer’s first Jays team in the spring of 1977.

“There are some ways that Pete and I are similar, I think,” Steinmeyer says of the Jefferson City football legend. “Our personalities are different in some ways. Coaching is important, but dedication and work ethic are 10 times more important.

“I tell the kids all the time that any time you walk on the court, if you haven’t played as much as the guy across the net from you, you’re probably going to shake his hand and say, ‘Nice match,’ after you lost. But if you’ve spent more time on the court than he has, you’re probably going to win. That’s the way kids need to look at it. Winning and losing take care of themselves, but if you put in the effort, you’ll have enough success to really enjoy the sport.”

Morris knows as much. “I remember one special thing he did for me,” says Morris, a 1978 graduate of JCHS. “I was getting ready to play this guy from Hickman who was really, really good. Everybody thought I was going to get waxed. Coach Steinmeyer and I went and hit on the basketball court at the high school, and I think it was during a dance [in the cafeteria]. That was on a Saturday night, and that was a really good warm-up for me.

“I ended up beating this guy [the following Monday], and I think it was because coach had me doing some extra work,” Morris continues. “He’s always been around and helping kids. I think that’s pretty special.”

I t w a s t h e M o r r i s family that helped Steinmeyer get his footing when he first came to Jefferson City.

“Matt was a nice player, completely a baseliner,” Steinmeyer says. “But the whole Morris family, they were a milestone in Jeff City when I got here. They were all the tennis talk. Those were the names. Those guys [including Matt’s brothers, David and Robert] really kept the program going for a long time.”

Steinmeyer has apparently used a valuable poker technique during his coaching days — the art of the bluff.

“One of the first times we met him, we all sat down with him in the lunchroom at JC, and he told us we were all expected to run a mile in five minutes, 30 seconds,” Matt Morris says. “That was about two months before the season started. So everybody was trying to run as much as they could. Back then, nobody ran unless they were on the track team, but we were all running around the school trying to get ready.

“Then he took us down to the track one time; it was the only time he followed through on it. I think maybe somebody came close [to running a mile in five and half minutes]. I didn’t. That was like breaking the four-minute mile now. It all went away. I guess it was a bluff, but it sure scared us.”

As i f h e d i d n ’ t k e e p busy enough, Steinmeyer started officiating volleyball just five years ago — at age 73. Never say you’re too old. “I really got started in it because I didn’t want to go home, sit and watch TV and eat chips and things I really didn’t need to have,” Steinmeyer says.

But it’s tennis — and with his wife of 53 years, Martha, by his side (he didn’t meet her at the Webster Groves tennis courts, by the way) — that keeps him going.

“I want to do it until I can’t do it anymore,” Steinmeyer says. “Eventually, I’ll get too old to do it, but hopefully someone will pick up that lantern because in Jeff City, that’s the only way it’s going to happen.

“I just hope the kids who I’ve worked with are better people when they leave.” JC

The fabulous thing about fashion is that you can fit a lot into a small container, and when added with a little personal style of your own, you’ve got a chic, personalized look. Here’s how it goes: You’ll need a pair of slacks or cool skinny jeans, maybe one of each, along with a pair of leggings, a dress, a few long-sleeve tees, a cardigan or sweater vest and a great statement coat that will take you everywhere.

You both should choose shades of black, gray or navy. They will all blend together, look terrific and appear new when paired differently.

Add one color of your choice; orange and bright blue are hot right now. Then experiment with this season’s fashion trends: statement coats, leather, cheetah print, quilting, scarves, vests and bold sunglasses. Keeping your clothes neutral for traveling means more freedom to layer and still look chic.

Pack a dress that can take you many places.

Choose one that can be dressed up or down so it’s fashionable for cocktails and dinner and still looks great paired with a sweater over it for a

more relaxed look. Consider wearing boots on the plane, but choose wisely: comfort first, the ability to get them on and off easily second.

Boots are very chic right now and will look good with everything in your bag. Add a pair of ballet flats or sneakers if you feel you need to have another shoe option for your excursions.

Your husband should bring two to three pairs of his best jeans, especially a dark-washed pair for dressier occasions. Also pack a pair of sweatpants and a pair of dress pants if he has room, along with one classic white collared shirt. The rest could be long-sleeve polo shirts or T-shirts for layering. A cool cashmere, wool or leather vest or fleece pullover would be great for layering, too. Travel in a sport coat that can easily be dressed up or down and a pair of allweather, comfortable boots. Add a great hat or ball cap that will help make him feel at home, and don’t forget to pack him some warm socks.

There’s No Place Like Home

Jefferson City’s favorite TV personality shares a passion for more than just the game.

By Rod Smith Thank you for letting me call Jefferson City home. I wouldn’t be here without you. It’s been five years since so many of you fought to keep me here, and I will never forget it.

Many of you were blessed to grow up around Jefferson City; I chose to move here.

KRCG was actually the only TV offer I had coming out of college, and I was hired to be a weekend weatherman, even though I didn’t know anything about the weather (other than I got wet when it rained). I finally ended up in sports. I never dreamed I would be here for more than 25 years.

I met my wife, Lana, in Jefferson City, and we’ve raised our three beautiful daughters —Brittany, Brooke and Paige — here. I don’t know a better place to raise a family, and I truly treasure the many relationships we’ve built throughout the area.

I don’t know of a more charitable community than Jefferson City, and I’ve been blessed to be a part of so many wonderful events and organizations that raise funds for so many worthy causes. I’m thankful for my role at the Naught-Naught Agency that allows me to serve others, as they’ve taught me so much about putting faith into action.

The Naughts inspire me and many others to serve our community.

A lt h o u g h I ’ v e had opportunities to cover World Series, Super Bowls, University of Missouri bowl games and NCAA tournaments, I really feel most at home covering our local high schools. I love covering our kids from our families in our schools.

That love was returned to me in an unbelievable way five years ago. It’s something that just doesn’t happen in my business — unless God blessed you with a community such as Jefferson City.

May 22, 2008: I was called into the general manager’s office and told I was no longer needed. Jobs had to be cut in a bad economy,

After 23 years at KRCG, I was being let go.

I didn’t know what we would do or where we would go, but I had faith in the Lord who did. What happened over the next few weeks forever changed my life — and I had nothing to do with it.

The station ownership in Chicago didn’t know the power of the people in central Missouri. Thanks to an online petition, phone calls and emails from viewers and local business leaders, KRCG asked me to come back to work.
