e’re coming into my favorite time of year — the holiday season. I love getting to spend time with family and friends and enjoying the lights, the music in the air and the smell of freshly baked cookies. However, I also love the end of the year because it’s time to reflect on the past 12 months and evaluate the opportunities that arose and the challenges we faced. It’s a time when we stop and show gratitude for the changes that happened and grow and embrace the year to come.

I am so grateful for many things this year. One, of course, is the health and happiness of my children. I am grateful for the love and support of my family and for an abundance of true friendships. I have faced many challenges this year, and I am grateful for them as well because they have made me realize that I have the strength and the courage it takes to be a better and healthier person.

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. I hope you will take time out of the hustle and bustle of the season to reflect on the past year, find peace in today and push forward for tomorrow’s journey.

W

e live in a competitive society. Right now, between new football rivalries (heightened to new Missouri levels thanks to the SEC) and the pending presidential election, it feels as if we are at our country’s best — or worst, depending on how you look at things. In this issue of Jefferson City Magazine, we present our second annual City’s Best awards. It’s a competition, but as we set out the poll this summer, I realized that competition is not what it’s really all about. Watching local businesses and personalities call for support and then seeing the votes come in reminded me of how important loyalty is. Holding a title of “City’s Best” only means something because the customer support is there. Being better than your competitor only means something when you are doing the best job you can. Earning a City’s Best award is about serving your customers so well that they love you. It’s about our readers rallying behind their favorites and giving a collective cheer.

I’ve heard people lament that similar polls are rigged so only the advertisers win, but with City’s Best, the votes stand as cast. We showcase Jefferson City in every issue, but for this issue, we have the opportunity to go above and beyond to highlight so many people and businesses in our community, as voted on by our readers. We offer the City’s Best poll because it allows us to connect with our readers to showcase fan favorites. (That, and because we love a good party. Hope you can join us for our City’s Best Celebration on Nov. 15!)

I'm a Midwest commercial photographer who specializes in advertising, editorial and corporate photography with a focus on people.

My studio is right here in Jefferson City, but the majority of my location-based commercial work is split between St. Louis and Kansas City. So when I was offered the opportunity to work with Jefferson City Magazine, I jumped at the chance because I would get to do more work right here in my community. So far in the short time that I have been working with the magazine, I have met and photographed some amazing people right here in Jefferson City. I’m looking forward to future assignments.

My mom still has a cool pantsuit she made in the '70s: black background, plaid with red-ribbed knit sleeves and a zipper-front jacket with matching slacks. It was pretty hip then, and now I would consider it cool, modern sportswear. Guess what? The pantsuit is back. Petals for You’s holiday service transforms any home into a glittering affair

A formal Christmas is a gala affair.

This holiday home, decorated by Petals for You, features Christmas décor that allows the homeowners to entertain in a traditional and formal style. A shining centerpiece is aglow in copper and gold, terracotta coral and lime-green ribbons, and a 9-foot artificial evergreen tree towers beneath a cathedral ceiling in the great room. It’s a perfect spot for the family to gather during the holiday festivities.

Leah Ann Boss, owner of Petals for You, led the holiday decorating effort for the home. “It takes two to three days for two or three people to decorate each home during the holiday season,” she says about her business’ holiday ser-

vice. Boss says the key is to start early and plan well. The Petals for You staff is typically booked from the second week of November to the second week of December decorating homes for the holiday season.

In this home, the centerpiece tree in the great room is offset with large copper-toned deer, poinsettias and ribbons to embellish the marble and pillars in the space. The tree’s décor matches copper draperies on the wall of windows behind it as well as other elements in the room to create an “overwhelmingly beautiful” effect, according to Boss.

While the main tree in the great room features a grand display of glitter, gold, pine cones and more, three other holiday trees in the home feature some of the family’s own Christmas memories mixed with traditional elements to make the whole house flow with a blend of tradition and formal style.

In addition to the trees, four mantel tops are decked and draped with asymmetrical-designed floral garland, and more greenery, gold, copper and brown adorn tables and mirrors. Punches of rich red and shimmery lime green take traditional holiday décor to a luxe level. On the staircase, wide ribbons in varying fabrics, textures and hues line the banister. The kitchen has a more whimsical theme of gilded iced fruit, while the basement and foyer trees feature traditional red and green.

Feathers, pinecones and natural greens and browns balance out the glitter and glitz for an elegant and classic look.

“With a job like this, you start decorating in layers,” Boss says.

“First you start with the large items, the big ornaments, fruits and deer and then add on smaller details until you get the smallest ones to finish off with a polished theme.” n

Brenda loves life with gusto and strives to savor every moment and season by decorating in celebration. She fondly remembers her grandmother’s Christmases and pulls from those memories every time December rolls around. Armed with an abundance of trees and a heart for the season, she hopes to make each Christmas one to remember. n

My experience at Victoria’s was wonderful! My matron of honor and I were on the hunt for bridesmaid dresses. We didn’t have a specific dress or style in mind. As 2012 winds to a close, Jefferson City residents, business owners and elected officials are reflecting on the year: the progress, the setbacks and the future of the capital city. Although most would agree that the city is, in fact, working to move forward in one way or another, the method of movement and the call for change vary across the board. Some push more heavily for business.

Some call for a return to small-town values. All are hoping to see results in the New Year — and a city they are proud to call home.

Progress vs. setbacks This year, Jefferson City voters rejected two initiatives that proponents say would have worked to improve the city and its services, both by way of funds received through increased sales taxes.

Among the initiatives that failed in 2012 was the Transformation Plan, introduced by the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, with a goal of transforming the community with 30 projects over a five-year span of time.

Funding for the proposed projects’ estimated $41 million budget would have come through a half-cent sales tax slated to go toward city restoration projects including the Missouri State Penitentiary and the Jefferson City Convention Center, Old Town and Downtown projects, updates to Lincoln University and St. Mary’s, Riverfront development projects and retail and angel network projects. Roughly 61 percent of voters rejected the plan in the February election.

“I believe the biggest aspect of the plan we are missing out on is just the overall investment it would have created in our community,” says Ken Hussey, co-chair of the Transformation Committee. “The intent was to bond the sales tax, providing approximately $41 million in investment over the next five years. That investment and development would have spurred other opportunities as well.”

The second initiative to fail was Proposition 2, the Jefferson City Fire Department Improvement Plan, which proposed a .25 percent sales tax estimated to generate the $2.6 million needed to complete the project. The plan would have gone toward creating six new budget categories in the department: fire suppression

and

emergency

equip-

ment, firefighting and EMS training, communications and technology equipment, apparatus lease and replacement program, Jefferson City’s contribution for firefighters in LAGERS and funding for fire station improvements. The initiative failed in August by roughly 58 percent.

Backers for both plans promised positive change for Jefferson City, but it wasn’t enough for the city’s voters.

That leaves many residents with two big questions: Why the rejection, and what’s next for Jefferson City?

Behind the vote Although there’s little argument about the merits of improving Jefferson City through increased safety of its residents and visitors, election results indicated that officials still haven’t landed on the right solution.

“We have a top-notch group of firefighters, yet much of their equipment and gear needs to be updated, and their opportunity to obtain training is crucial,” says Mayor Eric Struemph. “I do not believe there is a simple answer on how to get these needs funded. However, the people have voted, and whatever improvements are made will need to be done without raising taxes. People want smaller government, not larger.”

Hussey says he thinks the size and scope of the Transformation Plan made it more challenging to communicate. “It was a large proposal, over 30 projects, a 10-year sales tax. … Also, with a large proposal like this, there are often plenty of projects that draw criticism and negative attention,” he says. “I suspect some voters disagreed with a few of the projects and voted no based on that.”

Voters and online message boards point to three main reasons for the failed initiatives: • The economy: With the recent recession and slow improvement to city and state unemployment rates, an increase in sales tax is another pull to pockets that are already stretched thin.

• Unbalanced use of a sales tax: Some opponents argue that funding the proposed initiatives through a sales tax — rather than a property tax or the general revenue budget, for example — gives lower-income residents a disproportionate share of the costs.

• Trust in the city’s elected officials: This comes down to tangible results.

Rather than wrap tax dollars into

bonds or sales taxes, opponents are calling for plans with more specifics as to how, where and when funds will be allocated. Some suggest choosing one project at a time and producing results before moving onto another proposal.

Jefferson City in 2013 So what’s next for Jefferson City?

Although some officials note the failed initiatives as setbacks to progress, they remain hopeful about where the city is headed.

“Jefferson City is a great community,” Struemph says. “Our citizens are more giving than most, more self-reliant than most and more community-oriented than most. We are cautious, preferring incremental change, but ready to tackle any challenge.”

Hussey sees a positive future for the city. “For me personally, my focus will remain on working with others to help make Jefferson City a great community,” he says. “The Transformation process prior to the campaign generated many great ideas and created strong enthusiasm among many in our community.

I hope we can find a way to harness that energy and continue to do positive things in 2013 and the years to come.”

As for tangible work for the upcoming year, the mayor and Jefferson City have a full docket. “When I wake up each day, I am excited about the day ahead and about the future of Jefferson City,” Struemph says. Among the projects for 2013 are making progress toward a conference center, made possible by the lodging tax voters approved last year; working on negotiations toward obtaining either a long-term lease or ownership of the Missouri State Penitentiary property, which, Struemph says, could create a significant boost in economic development for the area; and working toward a multipurpose center for recreational events.

“And we are moving forward with a number of capital improvement projects aimed at making our city the best it can be for our citizens,” he adds. n

Stepping out from behind the lens, photographer Chris Hollaway is finding new success with his grandfather as owners of Pro Storage in Jefferson City

Chris Hollaway knows a thing or two about running a small business. As owner of Pro Photo, Hollaway has established a respected business presence in mid-Missouri. Whether shooting commercially, doing portrait work or providing support to Jefferson City Magazine as the main photographer, Hollaway exudes confidence and skill and provides a high level of customer service to his clients. In short, he is in his element — creatively and professionally — with a camera in hand.

But in his most recent venture, Hollaway has stepped out from behind the lens.

In October of 2010, Hollaway and his grandfather, Jim Ripperger, opened Pro Storage, a Jefferson City storage facility consisting of 187 units of varying sizes in both climate- and non-climate-controlled buildings.

A few years ago, Ripperger purchased a storage facility in Sedalia from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and liked the business.

“We decided to build another in Jefferson City as a family project,” Hollaway says.

Lessons learned Despite being a departure from the business atmosphere with which he was familiar, Hollaway was on board.

However, even with the experience of already being a business owner, he says he learned much during the process of turning a storage facility from concept to reality.

“The construction of the facility was where I really learned some lessons,” Hollaway says. “Working under city regulations, babysitting the contractors and making sure we were on schedule and on budget were all new things that I had to learn on the fly. Thankfully, I had my grandfather, who has loads of experience, to guide us through the process.”

Another challenge was figuring out the best mix of unit sizes. If the mix is wrong, one size could have all full units, and another size could end up with mostly empty units.

“We found that 10-by-20-foot units in climate control were extremely popular, so we took out some walls of adjacent 10-by-10-foot units to create more,” Hollaway says.

Their goal is to fill the facility and expand. “We're currently looking for land to build another location or purchase an existing facility,” Hollaway says.

files for retention purposes to business owners who store inventory to new homebuyers who need to store their whole house for a few months or “just somebody who needs some extra space,” Hollaway says.

Ensuring security Security is a hot topic in regard to storage facilities. “If you're going to spend the money to store your goods, make sure to have a coded gate, video surveillance and, as a last line of defense, a disc lock that can’t be cut,” Hollaway says.

In addition to a coded gate and surveillance, Pro Storage has an onsite manager. “We run a tight ship here,” Hollaway says. “And we watch out for nefarious behavior.”

The standard rental agreement includes language stating the renter cannot live in the unit. Although Hollaway hasn’t personally experienced some of the scenarios other storage facility owners have warned about, he has had an abandoned car left in a unit and had someone trying to turn a unit into a motorcycle repair shop.

When units are abandoned, staff makes every effort to contact the renter. Pro Storage has held two storage unit auctions since opening.

“It is gut wrenching to sell someone’s stuff,” Hollaway says. “I hate that part of it, but the opportunity I find to be the most rewarding is being able to help people in — and in some cases, desperate — times of need.”

H.O.P.E. Campaign

The Jefferson City Police Department launches a campaign to address the dangers of heroine addiction and share means of prevention

Last summer, Jim Marshall and his wife, Merry, suspected their son Cody was experimenting with drugs. His behavior was inconsistent, he was hanging out with a new group and items were disappearing from their home.

They tried to reach out to him, but confrontations only led to denials and additional family challenges. Tragically, on Sept. 27, 2011, their worst fears were realized when Cody, only 20 years old, died as the result of a heroin overdose. Devastated, the Marshalls began to look for answers.

“I found out that nobody knew how bad the information was and how many kids were going down from this,” says Jim Marshall, crosscountry coach at Westminster College in Fulton.

Following Cody’s death, the Jefferson City Police Department noticed an alarming rise in heroin overdoses. “We were told by other agencies across the state that the heroin problem started at the East Coast and was working its way back west at the time, and we were on the cutting edge,” says Sgt. Joseph Matherne, a member of the JCPD Community Action Team.

The H.O.P.E. Campaign, developed through the Jefferson City Police Department’s Community Action Team, reaches out to educate the public about the dangers of heroin addiction. Their goal is to reduce the incidence of abuse and overdoses through prevention and education. oin, some for distribution and some for possession that related back to overdose investigations. No heroin overdoses were reported in July.

Moving forward

This news prompted Matherne, along with Officers Chuck Walker and Kevin Kempker, to research existing heroin prevention programs. Unable to find anything that fit Jefferson City, they developed the Heroin Overdose Prevention and Education Campaign, H.O.P.E., in January 2012.

On Feb. 9 they held the first H.O.P.E. event at the Assembly of God Church, which attracted close to 300 people. Following this initial success, events were held at the Solid Rock Church and the Catholic Diocese in March, at Lincoln University in April and in Fulton in July.

Help and prevention Free and open to the public, H.O.P.E. events, offered in the evenings, address four key heroin prevention issues: law enforcement education, medical, counseling and treatment. Detective Mike Ottolini covers heroin signs, symptoms and paraphernalia for the law enforcement portion. Pediatrician Dr. Nancy Howe speaks on the medical aspects of heroin addiction. Counseling is divided into three parts: prevention is taught by Linda Frost of the Family Counseling Center or Joy Sweeney with the

Counsel for Drug Free Youth; treatment is presented by Kathleen Mims of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse; and recovery is led by Brenda Schell from the Missouri Recovery Network. Recovering heroin users and Jim Marshall offer testimonials. The JCPD uses a condensed version of the H.O.P.E. program at smaller venues such as Rotary clubs, business organizations, the Division of Family Services and Knights of Columbus. “Pretty much every civic organization in Jefferson City has requested us,” Matherne says.

Additionally, the JCPD launched a sister program for children this year called Heroin: A Dead End. Taught by public school resource officers and geared toward students in seventh grade through high school, this program picks up where D.A.R.E. leaves off. “We hoped to get heroin awareness put into the minds of the kids at school and the parents at night and get that interaction going,” Matherne says.

Overall, the JCPD campaign is making a difference. There were 13 heroin overdoses reported in January 2012. On March 19, during a drug sweep, the JCPD arrested 30 individuals, and 26 were related to her-

“Every fifth person says we’re glad you’re doing this because my daughter, my nephew or my uncle is going through a heroin issue,” he adds.

Although heroin use is down, Matherne is quick to point out this doesn’t mean the drug problem is over. “Right now we’re seeing a growth in meth, so we’re going to add into our education portions the dangers and hazards of meth,” he says. The department is also concerned with other drugs, such as those marketed as bath salts and even energy drinks.

“We are trying to tell the kids addictive behavior leads to more addictive behavior,” Kempker says. “So you don’t want to start down that road if you can help it.”

For Marshall, who tells Cody’s story at each H.O.P.E. event, he hopes the campaign opens parents’ eyes to the realities of heroin addiction. “Part of my regret and grief is because I thought I knew enough to prevent this because I’m an educator, and I’ve been in seminars and workshops about drug abuse and kids,” Marshall says.

Living Hope, a ministry-based nonprofit, offers health care services, counseling and education to the more than 200,000 underprivileged residents in Cape Town.

Students in the Thomas Jefferson Middle School Art Club have worked together to raise funds for the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri’s Buddy Pack program for the past two years.

Students sold suckers to their classmates and in September presented a check for $500 to the Buddy Pack program.

Featuring a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, activities and crafts, refreshments and gifts, the event is a favorite among the children and made possible through the generosity of George and Gaylene Ousley.

“The Ousleys provide funding for the program,” says Southwest Principal Nicole Langston. “They are involved with choosing the presents, setting us up with a live Mr. and Mrs. Claus and helping recruit community volunteers.” Although the event is a Christmas celebration, Langston says it also focuses on building character, an important aspect of the school, which includes a Title I preschool, the Early Childhood Special Education, the EEE (gifted program), Parents as Teachers and the Infant/Toddler Program. This year the children will fill backpacks with pajamas, books, stuffed animals, toothbrushes and

toothpaste for the Central Missouri Foster Adoption Association Backpack Program.

“Many of our children know firsthand the stress of being removed from a home and can identify with the feeling of the children for whom we fill Begin Again backpacks during our holiday celebration,” Langston says.

In addition to the Ousleys’ donations, other groups support the Christmas program. This year, the Jefferson City Academic Center, Jefferson City High School, Helias and Calvary Lutheran in conjunction with the United Days of Caring initiative wrapped presents. For the past

two years, Scholastic has donated a book for every child.

The Ousleys, who attended last year’s program, look forward to this year’s event. “It was one of the most rewarding moments of my life,” George Ousley says.

“To see the kids’ faces, it was wonderful. It does your heart good.”

For Langston, the Christmas/Character Program also serves as an opportunity for the community and school to work together. “It allows us to partner with community members to brighten the holiday season for our children, our families and our staff at Southwest,” she says. n

Support through the Preschool Years: MOPS Raising preschool children is challenging. One minute they warm your heart, and the next they try your patience. But countless Jefferson City mothers are not only surviving the preschool years, but they are also celebrating them through the help and support of MOPS. MOPS, or Mothers of Preschoolers, originated in Colorado in 1973 when a group of women gathered to encourage one another and discuss parenting issues. The concept spread quickly, and today there are 3,900 national and international MOPS groups. The Jefferson City MOPS has been meeting for 15 years.

Jenni Cecil, Jefferson City MOPS coordinator, says MOPS offers women not only a welcoming place to meet and exchange parenting ideas but also a chance to listen to speakers on topics that interest them. “Our goal is to get speakers who will focus on topics that are relevant to moms so that each mom who comes to one of our MOPS meetings will leave feeling refreshed, encouraged and fed, spiritually and otherwise,” Cecil says.

Jefferson City MOPS member Kristin Metzger says she particularly likes the diversity of the group. “Our group is made up of moms from all walks of life from many different churches. We welcome all women

Children of MOPS members, aptly named MOPPETS, enjoy the meetings as well. Divided into age groups, MOPPETS take part in ageappropriate activities such as Bible story time, games, crafts and music in a safe environment under the supervision of volunteer caregivers who are screened and receive background checks.

The Jefferson City MOPS also offers activities and special events outside the normal meetings. One popular subgroup is Mommy & Me Adventures, which has included hayrides, nature walks and scavenger hunts, to name a few. Additionally, MOPS members participate in service projects. This year they focused on the needs of The Samaritan Center.

“We all have different backgrounds and are able to share our life experiences and learn so much from each other, not to mention forming lifelong friendships,” Metzger says. “Our goal is that no mom would ever feel alone.” MOPS welcomes all denominations and all mothers, from pregnancy to those with kindergarteners. n

If that sounds inviting to you, consider a trip to Tuscany with the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce April 18 to 27, 2013. You don’t have to be a Chamber member; all Jefferson City residents are invited. Travel companions from out of the area are also welcome. Up to 36 people may take the trip, but there is no minimum number. Although many couples travel together, singles are just as welcome. “It also makes a good girlfriend trip,” says Colleen Taylor of Midwest Travel Consultants Inc., who made the arrangements.

“This is a community relationship program,” says Angi Baugher, the JCA Chamber’s director of finance and operations.

“We are able to do this because we have partnered with the national organization Collette Vacations and locally with Col-

leen. This allows us to offer this wonderful travel experience at a great price.”

The individual traveler’s cost based on double occupancy is $3,449, single occupancy is $3,749, and triple occupancy is $3,419. “For the first Chamber trip to China in 2011, we compared their price to other trips of its kind and offered travelers about $800 savings,” Baugher says. The price includes 10 days, 13 meals and the roundtrip airfare. Optional tours are available for an additional fee.

Trip of a lifetime “After landing in Rome, there is an optional tour of classical Rome, or travelers can explore on their own,” Taylor says.

After traveling to Assisi, travelers arrive at their hotel for the next six nights in the

spa resort town of Montecatini Terme. From this base, day trips include the city of Siena, San Gimignano and two days in Florence, with optional opportunities to visit the Republic of Pisa or the village of Lucca.

Travelers have the opportunity to see traditional Italian leather-making and learn the history of the workmanship of Florentine gold. The trip also offers opportunities to see the Tuscan winemaking process and taste local wine and learn about the production of olive oil.

“This is only the second Chamber trip,” Taylor says. “I want to assure people that the Chamber has no hidden agenda; they are not trying to sell you anything or get you to join. This is just one of the nice things they do to encourage relationship building in Jefferson City.”

Dan and Kim Bassler took the Chamber trip to China and have already signed up to take the trip to Tuscany as well. “Organization of the trip was top notch,” Dan Bassler says. “I don’t think we could have seen any more sights in that time than we did. It amazes me that I could travel to a different country for less than many trips in this country.”

“We chose Tuscany because we wanted something entirely different from the 2011 trip,” Baugher says.

“Twenty-two people took the trip to China. What a wonderful thing to

travel with people who all have a connection to Jefferson City.”

“We met a lot of nice people,” Dan Bassler says, “and we learned more about people we knew. Now we have a little China group.”

Baugher says Midwest is happy to work with travelers by appointment if they need help getting a passport or would like to extend the trip a few days or make special connections while abroad. “Last year they facilitated a business contact for one person and a Rotary International contact for another,” she says. “They help you every step of the process.”

Preparing for Cold and Flu Season 3 Must-Dos to Stay Healthy

1. Wash your hands.

Washing your hands is the single most important way to stop the spread of colds and the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 80 percent of infectious diseases are spread by touch; the cold germs get on the hands and from there into the eyes and mouth. When you wash your hands, use soap and water, and scrub for a minimum of 20 seconds.

When you’re not near a sink, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a good substitute.

2. Go disposable.

Shared towels and cups in the bathroom can spread colds. When someone in the house is sick, consider switching to paper products for a week. It’s also a good idea to keep toothbrushes separate, and if someone is sick, consider just buying new toothbrushes all together.

3. Disinfect.

Cold and flu germs can live on surfaces for hours. Consider disinfecting areas such as tabletops, doorknobs, remote controls and toys. You might not be able to get all the germs and viruses lurking in your household, but it can help reduce the risk for infection.

Get a flu shot. Getting the flu vaccine is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself during cold and flu season, says Dr. Pearson. Some people might still get the flu even if they have the shot, but that’s not likely, and if they do get the flu, it will probably be less potent than if they hadn’t received the shot, adds Dr. Gibson.

Take care of yourself. Pearson says exercising, eating nutritional meals and staying hydrated are also great things you can do to protect yourself. These good practices might not always prevent you from getting a cold or the flu, according to Dr. Gibson, but they might help your body recover more quickly if you do become ill.

Debunking Flu and Cold Myths Myth: Going outside with wet hair will make you sick.

False. Going outside with wet hair, or not being dressed warmly enough, does not cause you to get a cold or the flu.

Those are caused by viruses, which are spread most often by being around people who are sick with the virus.

MYTH: Feed a cold and starve a fever.

False. You should always stay hydrated and eat well.

MYTH: The flu vaccine will give you the virus and make you sick.

False. It’s a dead virus. Some people may have a reaction to the chemicals in the injection itself, but the flu vaccine won’t give you the flu.

When to See the Doctor

You should go see your physician if you have difficulty breathing or chest pain. Also, any fever of 100.5 or higher for an extended period of time, being unable to keep fluids down, painful swallowing, persistent cough, congestion or headache could be signs you need to be seen by a physician.

Baseball might still be our country’s pastime, but football is our passion. The No. 1 sport in America is football, which is now America’s game: namely, the NFL. The No. 2 sport is fantasy football, which has captured the attention of an estimated 50 million people. Bieber must be jealous.

“I think for a lot of people who don’t have a team to root for or have a team that stinks, it’s a way for them to get into the game,” says Will Palaszczuk, co-host of The Big Show, a daily radio sports show on KTGR. “People have so much fun doing it, and it gets you to watch every game — and it feeds into the beast that is the NFL. “And the way it’s evolved, it’s really easy to get into it, kind of like March Madness,” he continues. “There’s so much literature on it now, even the most novice fan can be a part of it.”

The making of a champion The roots of fantasy football date back to 1962, but it’s exploded in the past 15 years, coinciding with the explosion of the Internet. Some fantasy leagues are for money; some are for fun. But all of them are for bragging rights.

“It’s much more about the bragging rights,” says Dan Pfenenger, owner of J. Pfenny’s. He’s been in a league with 12 buddies for about 10 years.

“We have a trophy for the league champion,” he says, “and we just invented a toilet bowl so the last-place guy gets a trophy, too.”

Thom Griffin, Palaszczuk’s co-host, says: “I already beat Will this season. ... That was a nice beat-down. So I already feel like a champion.”

The fantasy season starts with a draft, whether it’s in a smoke-filled back room with your buddies or on the Internet with friends or folks you’ve never met. There will be trades, free-agent moves and other roster changes throughout the season.

Each week, depending on the league you’re in, you can have head-to-head matchups or just play total points for your team.

Although you have multiple players at the scoring positions, each week your team will typically feature a quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, a kicker and a team defense.

“Sometimes it does put me in a predicament when my guys are going against each other,” Griffin says. “You can have some bittersweet moments.”

Sometimes, those moments are quite personal. “As a Rams ticket holder for years, me and my brother and my dad would be up at the game, and one of us would have one player on the Rams, and one would have another player,” Pfenenger says. “So one of us would be yelling for Steven Jackson to get tackled at the goal line, and another would be yelling for him to get into the end zone.

“People were looking at us like we were idiots,” he continues.

“But it’s a lot of fun. So many people play it, and there are a lot of females who play it, too.”

Appealing to the masses Palaszczuk’s girlfriend is playing for the first time this year, “and her team is better than mine. … It’s terrible,” he says with a laugh. “I’m just glad we’re in two different leagues.”

The game is pulling in more female fans all the time. “My boyfriend has a team, and he kept talking about how well he was doing, so I wanted to compete with him,” says Kathleen Allsop, a first-year combatant. “Obviously, I've been around football all my life because every single guy I’ve ever talked to is a football fan. But just this year, I’m really starting to get into it, and I’m actually starting to like it. It’s like I’m managing my own football team and making millions of dollars — except I’m not making millions of dollars.”

Then again, maybe you can. “I’ve heard of fantasy leagues with pots of $50,000 to $1 million,” Griffin says. “You can go to Vegas before the season and get in some of these drafts, and people are dropping some serious dough out there.”

Capital Read

Behind the scenes with Alex George and his novel A Good American them when America declared war on Germany in 1917. I wanted to explore ideas about nationality and loyalty in the book, and that gave me the opportunity to do that.

Columbia, Mo., resident Alex George’s novel A Good American was selected as the 2012 Capital Read. Organized by the MidMissouri Regional Library, Capital Read is an annual communitywide reading event aimed at connecting people to literature through reading and discussion. Communitywide reads — called One Read or One Book in some areas — have exploded in popularity in recent years. Usually organized by libraries, they bring members of a community together to read and discuss the same literary work. Discussions usually take place in small groups, and sometimes authors participate.

In the following Q-and-A, Jefferson City Magazine delves into the writing process with George.

Why did you, as a native of England and an immigrant yourself, decide to write about a German family's immigrant experience? I wanted to set my story in Missouri. Once that decision had been made, it was an easy leap to decide that my immigrants should be from Germany rather than anywhere else. This state has a proud German heritage; I wanted to represent that.

In addition, there were a couple of other factors that made Germany the right choice from the point of view of the story itself. Having Frederick and Jette, the young immigrant couple, arrive in the States without being able to speak any English offered potential for some struggle and also humor. More importantly, their ancestry caused a conflict for

Because you are from England and have only lived in the United States a few years, what kind of research did you do to so accurately describe a small German town in Missouri? I’ve lived here for nine and a half years now.

In the course of writing this novel, I read an awful lot of rather dry textbooks about Missouri history. I also spent a lot of time in the Missouri Historical Society. I read more about crop yields in the 1930s than any normal person ever should.

I wanted to be sure that the story I was telling was historically accurate as best I could.

But the best way of learning about a place is simply to live there and keep your eyes open.

Are you musical? Is your family?

I used to play the saxophone semi-professionally, and I like to plonk about a bit on the piano and embarrass my children with my singing. Music, whether making it or listening to it, gives me huge amounts of joy, and that is something I wanted to convey in the novel.

Every book I have written contains music to a greater or lesser degree. It’s difficult for me to imagine writing a novel without music in there somewhere. It’s the stuff of life.

Although the novel sprang from my own experiences as an immigrant, the characters who populate the book are drawn wholly from my imagination. As for what that says about me, I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

What was your biggest challenge in writing this novel in particular and/or writing a novel in general? With this particular book, the greatest challenge was making sure that the story I wanted to tell worked within the correct historical context. I was laying down one single fictional thread over the existing tapestry of the 20th century and so had to ensure that my tale fit in with what actually happened. It was sometimes a struggle to get my made-up events to fit with real ones, and sometimes I had to abandon ideas and plot lines simply because the chronology didn’t work. In addition, various real-life characters appear in the novel. Every time I introduced a real person, I always did a lot of research to make sure that he or she was correctly represented.

A Good American Missouri River Regional Library’s Capital Read selection is a heartwarming story that explores the always-relevant question: What does it mean to be an American?

Growing up in a small Missouri town with a family history of German immigrants coming to this state (my great-greatgrandparents), I was surprised at how well the author captured life in a small German-heritage town because he is also an immigrant to the United States, from England. But that demonstrates the fact that we all search for what it means to call a place home and to find a place we fit in: in our communities and in our own families. A Good American’s story begins in 1904, when Frederick and Jette must flee her disapproving mother and go to America.

They plan to settle in New York but end up taking a boat to New Orleans, not realizing how different that could be. They take a journey up the Missouri River and finally settle in the fictional small town of Beatrice, Mo., with many other German immigrants.

The story follows the family through prohibition; World War II, when Frederick joins up; the assassination of President John Kennedy; and beyond. James, the book’s narrator and the couple’s grandson, discovers at the end that he doesn’t really know his own story or his own family at all.

Music plays an important role in how the family relates to the community and how the family members relate to one another.

All members of the family have to find their place in this new country, their town and their family and find their own definition of what it means to be a good American. If you’ve ever felt like an outsider in your own hometown, your school or even your own family, you will relate to these characters’ search for a place to call home.

Up next in the world of fashion is the pantsuit: matching or coordinating pants and jacket or coat. The pantsuit (also known as the suit with pants or, in Europe, as the trouser suit) was introduced in the 1920s as an option for women to appear more masculine. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the pantsuit became widely acceptable in the workplace for women. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1990s that women were allowed to wear pantsuits in the United States Senate. Enter Hillary Clinton, queen of the pantsuit. She has made the pantsuit a staple in her wardrobe, and now that power suit has finally become cool and chic.

The suits you’ll find in the stores this season aren’t going to be like your husband’s or boyfriend’s. They will be more flattering and feminine.

Look for sportswear influences, military references, embellishments and sequins; elongated or A-line jackets; cropped, trim or pleated full-leg

pants. Colors this season range from basic black, navy and gray to monochromatic brights and pastels. Patterned suiting is also new, and Jacquard patterns in brocade, damask and tapestry are very hot. Try belting your traditional suit jacket on the outside to emphasize your waist.

The pantsuit will also lend itself perfectly to your upcoming holiday parties. In 1966 Yves Saint-Laurent introduced his Le Smoking, an evening pantsuit for women that mimicked a man’s tuxedo. Switch up your basic black pantsuit to a tuxedo look in a jiffy by adding a crisp white shirt and a bowtie. Sarah Jessica Parker looked fabulous in her tuxedo when her character Carrie Bradshaw stood up as “best man” in the movie Sex and the City 2.

From a budget standpoint, you might already own a pantsuit but haven’t known how to re-invent it.

Seek out blouses with cool necklines such as ruffles or bows, or try adding a skinny tie or scarf to a collared shirt. A pin on the lapel with a strand of pearls or any layered jewelry and a hat will take you out of the boardroom and into the fashion spotlight.

If you don’t own a pantsuit, choose your favorite shopping destination, and I’m certain there will be a pantsuit that fits you, your style and your budget.

Getting to the Heart of Jefferson City, On the Air

By Warren Krech | Photo by Anthony Jinson So far this week on my radio show, I have asked questions about Medicare funding, state tax credits, the global politics of Islam, city street repair, acupuncture and zucchini. And it’s only Tuesday. This is why I love my job. I don’t need all the answers. I just ask the questions.

I have asked thousands of questions in my 30-some years in radio. The answers might have helped you decide which City Council candidate deserves your vote. Maybe they’ve convinced you to see a play or attend a fundraising barbecue. Every once in a while, a radio guest may have an answer that helps you become a better person or inspires you to try.

I don’t change the world much from my little corner of the radio dial, but I sure meet a lot of people who do. Those people might not be national celebrities or big-time policymakers, but they all have a story to tell, and it’s my privilege to help them tell those stories by asking them questions on my radio show.

Talk radio is a busy marketplace of ideas, information and entertainment. It can sometimes get angry and contentious, but I try not to let that into my show. I would rather find out what makes extraordinary people tick. They may have special talents, or they may have a passion for a cause. Maybe they just see something that needs fixing and try to fix it. Here’s the best part for me: Mid-Missouri is full of extraordinary people, so I will never run out of guests or questions.

How does a woman such as Marilyn DeFeo transform a few cans of food on a church basement shelf into The Samaritan Center? Why do Pete and Lorraine Adkins work so tirelessly on veterans projects? What inspired Joe and Kay Twehous to donate valuable real estate for a disabled Marine’s home? Why do JCPD Sgt. Randy Werner and his buddies freeze their tails off on the Coke billboard for Special Olympics every winter? How does a community continue to blow the lid off United Way campaign goals in these tough economic times?

I believe the answers to these questions get to the very heart of Jefferson City and what we stand for as a community.
