Equipment used
Once each consignment had been offloaded, the AIS Vanguard team was responsible for de-crating the equipment and transferring it into the customer’s factory, ensuring it was placed into the correct position and bolted into place so that Bobst’s engineers could connect and commission each machine. The total height of the press lines was 10m and the project involved working at height from scissor lifts and cherry pickers to position the dryers above the presses. The AIS Vanguard team was also responsible for assisting Bobst’s engineers with the installation, overcoming language barriers to work collaboratively with the OEM’s team.

of the UK’s regional and national newspaper publishers. It also produces a variety of other paper types for coldset, heatset and litho printing processes. Due to the access required, the first stage of the operation was to remove sections of the roof of the mill with the use of both tower and mobile cranes and support vehicles. On completion of this two day procedure the AIS Vanguard team was then able to decommission and lift the old gantry crane, which measured over 30 meters, out through the gap in the roof and on to transportation to be taken away. The next part of the task was then to lift the new gantry crane in through the roof and lower to its final position ready for the installation process and commissioning. Finally the sections of the roof were replaced. We were able to complete the entire project in less than five days, which was quicker than the programmed schedule. Due to the size, weight and the unusual entry and exit for the gantry cranes it was vital that all aspects of this project including method statements and health and safety procedures were in order.

Charles Thompson Ltd are specialist designer and manufacturer of process plant equipment to a variety ofindustry sectors including the petrochemical, pharmaceutical and nuclear sectors.
Scope of work For this project, Charles Thompson Ltd needed to know the gross weight of the 28.3m long 5.6m diameter load. Thanks to the JS 450 jacking system we were able to assist with this complex 160 Tonne lift with minimaldelays on site.
The solution Due to space restrictions traditional lifting methods were not appropriate for this task. We were contacted because of our experience with technical lifting projects and our previous successes in this field. Our lifting systems are designed to be used in almost any situation. Where traditional lifting methods such as cranes aren’t suitable, our experts can develop a bespoke lifting solution tailored to you. The JS 450 machine lifts by extraction of legs, contrary to conventional gantries that use a lifting device such as a winch or a strand jack. The limitations on this lift made the JS 450 the perfect choice for this project. We were responsible for lowering the load onto the load cells so accurate measurements could be taken.

low floor loadings in some places. Safe isolation and disconnection of primary and secondary services was also challenging due to limited information on existing service routes, and the team overcame this by tracing back supplies to ensure the correct service networks were isolated.
The demolition requirements included five buildings, comprising a tank farm, a solvent store, two production facilities and a boiler house, along with a 55m chimney stack. Demolition requirements also included a number of canopied link bridges between buildings, which contained services and conveyors that had to be removed and conserved for future use. A complete c.500m pipe bridge was also dismantled.
The facility was very dark, which created integral hazards that had to be managed with careful planning, effective communication and a meticulous approach to safety. The installation involved a total of 22 modules, ranging from 15t to 64t, with the largest module measuring 14 x 5.6 x 4 metres. With all equipment pre-installed in the purpose-built modules, the lifting operation was complex due to the uneven weight distribution and offset centre of gravity. Scope of work Ainscough Industrial were recently contracted by a well known cider maker to assist with a complex machinery lift and installation. Ainscough were brought in to assist with the positioning and installation of eighteen new fermentation vessels into their facility in Weston Super Mare. The project consisted of three phases which will be completed over a five week period. Each phase involved the lifting and positioning of six of the fermentation vessels which were 14.5 meters high and had a weight of 8.5 tonnes into the facility over a two day period.
The first stage for the Ainscough team was to remove a 1.5 tonne section of the roof of the facility. Then using two cranes the vessels were lifted using a “Top & Tail” technique, which enabled the vessels to be lifted through the roof space in a vertical position and lowered down onto the pallet shoes. This enabled the vessels to then be skated into the correct position within the facility. Once the first six vessels were safely positioned the Ainscough team the replaced the section of roof until the second phase commenced. On completion of the first phase the client commented on how pleased he was with the Ainscough team, especially considering the terrible weather conditions the team were faced with over the two days.

Surrounded by other plant and live mechanical and electrical services, the heat exchanger could not be tracked out or lifted with a crane, so the Glasgow team had to devise an alternative approach that would answer safety and operational requirements.

Following a site visit to assess the requirements and consider the specific challenges of the project, we devised a solution that involved bringing in a scaffolding partner to design structural scaffolding, with ladder beams above the existing heat exchanger, routed through a high level opening, with a landing platform at the other side of the plant.

Goss International Europe UK Ltd . Sheffield Case Study
Scope of work AIS Vanguard delivered a 3 month project with ‘OEM’ Goss International to remove three large web offset printing presses from the ex Polestar Print UK facility in Sheffield. One printing press will be going to a new facility in the Yorkshire area where Ainscough Industrial will be assisting with the installation whilst the other two will be reinstalled in Europe in the future.
One of the challenges... that needed to be overcome was when the dryer section of the press came to be moved, as it measured over sixteen metres long, four metres wide, with a weight of forty three tonnes, due to a decline on the road at the exit of the building the dryer could only be skated less than a metre at a time before it needed to be raised on chocs to enable it to stay parallel ready for the final lift and rotation onto the back of the low loader.
The Solution
Due to the diligent and methodical work practices from all the Ainscough team on site this project is on schedule to be
Due to the size of the three printing presses, which have a combined weight of over 1350 tonnes, it was vital that every aspect of the project was meticulously planned. This involved a series of technical meetings and risk assessments in conjunction with the management team of Goss International to ensure a smooth transition. As a result of the detailed planning it was decided that the best solution was to carefully lift each section of the presses from their plinths using our jacking systems and then skate each section to the building exit. From there they could then be lifted on to the transportation ready for the next stage of the journey. This process was completed by utilizing a range of Ainscough’s equipment including two Fork Lift Trucks, Valla Mini Crane, Ormig Mini Crane, 60/80 Versa Lift & Machine Moving Skates. In addition a 220te mobile crane was also required to complete some of the final lifts onto the low loaders.

Granada Cranes Broughton Case Study
Ainscough Industrial Services recently completed a challenging project for Granada Material Handling at Airbus in Broughton for the installation of a new 30 metre long, 40 tonne Gantry Crane and the dismantling & removal of the old gantry for scrap The project began with a series of technical meetings and risk assessments with an AIS Project Manager to ensure a smooth operation.
Scope of work It was decided that due to the size of the Gantry Cranes that the works would be best carried out over two separate phases. The first phase consisted of the loading of the new gantry crane by the AIS team using two 55 tonne mobile cranes on the far side of the airfield, it was then slowly transported across the airfield and into the hanger for the installation process to begin utilising our two 20 tonne Air Hoists. Once the machinery installation was successfully completed by the AIS team the second phase began which consisted of the large scale dismantling and removal of the old gantry and then the reverse transportation back across the airfield once again utilising our two 55 tonne mobile cranes. Although, on the face of it this project looked to be fraught with difficulties with the physical size of the gantry cranes, but with the skill, knowledge and experience of the Ainscough onsite team the project was successfully completed safely and on time to the complete satisfaction of the client.

Manchester Museum Manchester Case Study
Following on from the relocation of the Rapa Nui (Easter Island) statue to Manchester Museum in 2015, Ainscough Industrial were again called in to assist with the removal of the same statue due to major refurbishment programme which was due to start at the museum.
The solution continued... Once the statue was carefully packed and boxed up by the British Museum representatives the Ainscough team then used a tele-handler to lift and secure on to the back of a low loader ready for the journey South.
Scope of work
On the completion of the project, Manchester Museum’s Sam On arrival at the museum the Ainscough team first had to move the 3 tonne “Moari Hava” statue and plinth from its original position between two concrete columns. The Ainscough team were required to work diligently and methodically, as even with the museum doors and frames removed there was less than 10mm clearance from the top of the statue, and with a conservative value of close to £9m it was vital that the upmost care was taken throughout the project.
The solution This was done by using four scoots which enabled the team to move the statue approximately four feet forward into a clear area where a lifting gantry could be erected and the statue could be lifted to remove the plinth and turned through 90 degrees. Following that the statue was then lowered back onto the scoots ready to be manipulated through the museum doors and onto the outdoor foyer area where it was to be packed and boxed up for the journey back to the British Museum in London to be prepared for display at the Royal Academy in 2018.

Case Study
Ainscough Industrial Services recently received a request from Universal Coatings (UK) Ltd and principle contractor Kier Construction to assist with the removal of the Niffany Swing Bridge from over the canal in Skipton.
Scope of work The 16 tonne bridge, which has been operational over the canal for over thirty years but was now in a state of disrepair and was no longer suitable for the amount of traffic that would be required to use, especially as the bridge would have been used as access for a number of holiday lets which had been recently built by the local farmer.
The solution After the work area had been taped as a practical and a track management system deployed for egress of plant into the work area and the close proximately of the busy road and temporary bridge, the three man Ainscough team began the rigging and slinging of the bridge whilst the Universal Coatings team loosened all he fixing bolts. After this, the bridge was successfully lifted by a 100te crane on to a trailer before being removed for scrap. The operation was completed in under a day to the complete satisfaction of the client who commented on how well the team worked and how he would be more than happy to work with our team again when the new bespoke replacement bridge was ready for the installation later in the year.

Each crane weighed 1500 tonnes and was built in the early 1970s and because of their physical size, they had become a landmark within the local community and their disassembly was tinged with sadness as it marked the disappearance of another great British shipyard.
The solution continued... The fly jib was confirmed to weigh 50 tonnes and the main boom 100 tonnes. These weights were within 10% of AIS’s calculations
Scope of work
and gave the main lift cranes a margin of 30% below their safe working load.
The positive side of the contract was the fact that the cranes were not to be cut up and scrapped like most large lifting cranes of that era but were to be carefully disassembled and then shipped to India and re-erected in one of the shipyards of the new owners – Bharati
The whole disassembly operation was carried out on programme and without incident and with the safety of all site personnel being paramount.
Shipyards Ltd of Mumbai India.
The dismantling of these cranes required careful engineering of the methodology of the disassembly and calculation of overall component weights and centres of gravity as no drawings were available which confirmed either the weights or centres of gravity of booms, fly jibs, ‘A’ frame and superstructure etc.
The solution The cranes were erected in the mid 70s with mast lift systems over a period of many months and was very labour intensive. This method was not an economically viable solution for the 21st century. The problem was to find a solution to efficiently disassemble the cranes (which were never designed for ease of disassembly) to ensure the stability of the crane whilst heavy components were being removed, at the same time using contemporary lifting methods and new state of the art heavy lift cranes. Great care was taken to ensure that each component was lifted safely by welding lifting lugs to the item to be lifted and sling lengths calculated to bring the centre of gravity under the crane hook.

Ainscough Industrial Services were recently awarded a substantial contract by Brymor Construction to assist with the dismantling of a Bellman World War II aircraft hangar at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge and then re-erect it in a new location on the same site.
Scope of work The Grade II listed Bellman Hanger which was now in a poor and deteriorating state, was designed to be transportable and laid on a sand base so that it could be moved as and when required. The Ainscough team working on this twelve week project have been tasked with the dismantling, repair, refurbishment and the re-erection of the hanger to a new position on the site. The work will also include the fabrication of the new wind bracings, which will also be completed by the Ainscough Industrial services division. The hanger will then be recladded to prevent leaks and thermal protection for the collections that will be housed within. The new interior of the Bellman hanger will be designed as an authentic ‘Aircraft Factory’ harking back to the hanger’s original use as a manufacturing building. Exhibitions at the museum will explore the history of aircraft manufacture from the pioneering early planes of wood and fabric, to the supersonic airliner and technologies of the future.

Ainscough Industrial successsfully complete gantry crane lift & relocation. Scope of work The air-bus hanger had contained two 71 metre span cranes, with the west crane in the better condition of the two. The client required the east crane to be removed to allow the west crane to move along the gantry into the area where the east crane operated and where the majority of their assembly works would take place on a new large order that had been secured. Once the west crane had been moved into it’s new position then we then needed to lift the east crane back onto the rails and test & commission, all within a time window of only four days.
The equipment We had to erect four x2 leg jacking systems under two thirds of the crane to support it, then supported the remaining third with two 40 tonne mobile cranes. We then split the crane and lowered the section to floor level, this in turn allowed us space to travel the remaining crane clear of the opposite gantry on the jacking system. We then lowered the jacking systems to their closed height which allowed us to travel the west crane over the top of the east crane with only 200mm clearance. Once this was confirmed we then lifted the crane back onto the gantry rails and load tested & commissioned.

MACE Heathrow Airport Case Study
Delivery of contract lift at the Terminal Transfer System, Terminal Five Heathrow Airport. In total a team of 60 people were needed to co-ordinate the tricky operation which had to be completed before the first flights of the day arrived.
Scope of work Principle contractor Mace engaged Ainscough Industrial Services to deliver a Contract Lift at the Terminal Transfer System (TTS) at Heathrow Airport Terminal Five which involved the installation of an addition passenger carriage. Installation of the carriage was not in itself a particularly difficult task, but due to the location of the entrance (in the middle of the main taxiway between T5A & T5B) a great deal of complex planning and co-ordination was required from Ainscough Industrial.
The engineers In addition AIS engineers had only a four hour window in the early hours of the morning to deliver the new transit train to Terminal 5. A huge hole needed to be dug in the middle of the airfield so that the 11.5 metre long, 16 tonne, vehicle could be dropped through to the tracks below. On completion of the lift the entrance for the carriage was sealed by concrete slabs weighing approximately 6 tonnes and designed to withstand a fully loaded airport emergency response vehicle driving over them.

second visit. Following the installation of the new OHCs, the jacking system remained on-site for a further seven weeks while commissioning work was undertaken.
The solution After extensive preparatory work to establish access and circulation space within the plant, as well as complete rigorous health and safety checks, RAMs and drawings AIS Vanguard deployed a four-strong rigging team and a 450 tonne hydraulic jacking system to carry out the installation and removal work over two separate visits.
“This project is a celebration of planning and agility, and it reflects a very positive working relationship with SCX Special Projects. We placed the utmost importance on health and safety and careful programme management from the outset, so that we could deliver the programme safely and efficiently and avoid the need for power station downtime.”
Following a three-day rig set up on site, Vanguard completed a series of complex jack lifts to erect the new OHCs, despite the challenges of working within an operational power station and its restricted spaces. Vanguard’s team was agile and responsive to the client’s evolving needs throughout, working around the station’s own scheduled operations and taking on additional work as the job unfolded.

Greenergy Didsbury . Manchester Case Study
Ainscough Industrial were contracted to complete a pipework project at a Greenergy fuel terminal in Plymouth.
Scope of work The week long project was to reduce the height of the Vapour Recovery System and all associated pipework by approximately one meter in the terminal’s three road loading bay area. When fuel (petrol/diesel) is discharged into road tankers, vapour is produced inside the road loading tanks. The Vapour Recovery System uses the negative pressure created in the tanks by the withdrawal to pull in the vapours, drawing them into holes in the side of the nozzle and through special hoses with a return path, so they can then be recovered and pumped back into the main storage tanks and recycled back into fuel.
The solution Due to the nature of project including the working with hazardous materials, the four man Ainscough team needed to pass all the stringent on-site inductions to ensure that all Health and Safety and PPE requirements were fully adhered to before any work could commence. The project was completed both on time, within budget and to the complete satisfaction of Greenergy who have since invited Ainscough Industrial Services to tender for two further projects.

Against vigorous competition from a number of competitors, Ainscough Industrial Services won the contract to erect a new coal stacker/reclaimer at Drax Power Station, which included dismantling and scrapping of the old machine.
Scope of work Ainscough Industrial provided a skilled team of fitters, riggers and welders to erect the 600 tonne machine, over a period of almost 12 months. The main structure of the machine arrived on site in approximately 22 pieces, with the remainder stored on-site in numerous freight containers and brought to site as and when required. The heaviest lift was the inner boom assembly which included the lower mast sections and weighed 49.5 tonnes.
The solution Many of the components had not been fitted with lifting points and, therefore, AIS designed, fabricated and fitted these and, in addition, organised a third party NDT inspection. To minimise working at height, sub-assemblies were fitted out with as much of their ancillary steelwork and fittings as possible at ground level, before being lifted into place. A procedure for dismantling the old machine was supplied by the client, together with calculated weights and centre of gravity positions.
