T

he close of Conference of the Parties 30 (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, on 21 November 2025, reaffirmed the critical role of the built environment in global climate action.

A central takeaway for building services engineers is the renewed focus on sustainable cooling. With global temperatures rising, cooling is shifting from a luxury to a basic necessity, becoming one of the fastest-growing sources of emissions. Discussions championed the UN’s “Beat the Heat” initiative, promoting a pathway that integrates passive design strategies (like cool roofs and urban green spaces) with low-energy cooling systems.

In this issue of Building Services Engineering, we delve into how the surge in heat pump installations and other renewable technologies is reshaping domestic radiator sizing protocols. We break down the amendments to TGD B and what they mean for sprinkler system installations in commercial properties, and we explore the complex piping networks underpinning district heating systems.

As my inaugural year as editor of Building Services Engineering draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to everyone that has engaged with me in past year for your invaluable support and input, and I wish all our readers a very happy Christmas break.

NEWS AND PRODUCTS Nordic Climate Group enters Irish market with major acquisition of Anglo Irish Refrigeration

In a significant development for the Irish cooling and heating sector, Ashbournebased Anglo Irish Refrigeration has been acquired by the Swedish industry heavyweight, The Nordic Climate Group.

The deal marks a major strategic entry into the Irish market for the Swedish group.

It is part of a broader expansion that includes the simultaneous acquisition of two UK firms – MC Refrigeration and CSD Air Conditioning – representing a combined investment totalling over €56.7m (£50m).

A major player in Ireland Founded in 1976, Anglo Irish Refrigeration is a cornerstone of the sector on this island, employing over 220 staff with four regional depots. The acquisition includes the company’s extensive portfolio of subsidiaries, cementing the Nordic Climate Group’s immediate footprint across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

EU Energy Report: Speed up the shift to clean power The 2025 State of the Energy Union report, published on 06 November, 2025, confirms the critical need for a secure, resilient energy union delivering clean and affordable power. Its findings will guide EU energy and climate policy towards 2030.

Data centre builders are scrambling to adapt their facilities for AI, but a major supply chain and power crunch is looming.

According to a new Turner & Townsend analysis, 2025 is the sector’s inflexion point, as demand shifts dramatically from traditional, air-cooled cloud facilities to higher-density, liquid-

cooled centres optimised for AI workloads.

The firm’s Data Centre Construction Cost Index 2025–2026 highlights a new era of market complexity. Global construction cost inflation for traditional data centres is averaging 5.5% in 2025.

In the US, AI-grade, high-density facilities carry a 7 to 10% construction cost premium compared to traditional builds of similar capacity, driven by the specialised cooling, power, and infrastructure required for advanced AI. While 73% of industry leaders remain optimistic about the sector’s recession-proof nature, the most significant obstacles are delivery challenges, not just cost.

83% of surveyed leaders warn that local supply chains are unprepared to support the advanced cooling for high-density AI centres.

Nearly half (48%) cite power availability as the primary obstacle to on-schedule project delivery—a growing concern as AI facilities demand massive power density.

The report urges clients to innovate on energy-efficient designs and re-examine procurement to fortify supply-chain resilience and mitigate powerconnection risks.

Lidl unveils Ireland’s first net zero energy supermarket in €10m green leap Lidl Ireland has taken a major step towards a greener future with the opening of Ireland’s first ever Net Zero Energy supermarket in Maynooth, Co Kildare. It has invested more than €10m into the local community in delivering the first supermarket in the country to produce all of its own energy from renewable sources and have no impact on the climate.

include: • A lush living wall surrounds the store entrance, sustained by a smart rainwater recovery system • A pollinator-friendly community garden with bird boxes, native wildflower planting and insect log piles creates a thriving habitat for biodiversity • Six EV charging stations powered by renewable electricity as well as 12 free-to-use chargers for e-bikes and

scooters, along with enhanced cycle parking facilities • Two DRS machines - one of which is a high-capacity bulk feeder (only the second of its kind in any Lidl store in Ireland!) making it even easier for customers to recycle large quantities of plastic bottles and cans in one go • Solar panels installed across the roof and car park - equivalent to the size of 13 tennis courts – allows the store to operate efficiently overnight • Innovative, energy efficient technology within the store and its chillers and freezers captures waste heat to keep these areas cool, and recycles it to heat the store.

• Built using stone salvaged from the original Maynooth store, concrete made from 50% recycled materials, sustainable timber roof beams and lower embodied carbon roof and wall panels.

With every detail considered, from recycled building materials to community donations of soil, fencing, and timber, Lidl’s Net Zero Energy store in Maynooth is a proud first for Ireland and a glimpse at the future of greener shopping.

Kirby Way Cycle Smashes Record, Raising Over €500,000!

The 2025 Kirby Way Cycle hit the roads around Portlaoise on 22 August, drawing nearly 300 participants, including Kirby team members, partners, and friends. This year’s event set a new record, raising an incredible over €500,000 for good causes.

A record 19 charities in Ireland and abroad—including The Jack and Jill Foundation, ISPCC, and Milford Care Centre—will benefit from the proceeds.

Kingspan awarded Best Irish Company in France

Panasonic launches iCORE CO₂ refrigeration range across Europe Panasonic Heating & Cooling Solutions has announced the European availability of its iCORE range of CO2condensing units, underscoring its position as a global leader in commercial refrigeration solutions and meeting the evolving needs of operators across the European market.

NEWS AND PRODUCTS Record numbers attend ALAN 2025 in Mayo

The ninth biennial International Artificial Light at Night Conference (ALAN 2025), which ran from 28 to 21 October over the October bank holiday weekend, was officially launched by Minister Dara Calleary and saw a record number of registrations, with over 40 countries represented.

Mayo County Council partnered with Dark Sky Ireland (DSI) and Friends of Mayo Dark Skies to host the conference, reflecting

their work on a new Light Pollution Policy and ambitions for a county-wide International Dark Sky Reserve.

The transdisciplinary conference brought together global researchers and practitioners in artificial light at night, featuring speakers such as internationally renowned lighting master planner Ulrike Brandi and Mayo’s commissioned light pollution policy designer, Kerem Asfuroglu.

Dark Sky Ireland Chair, Prof Brian Espey, welcomed Minister Calleary’s opening, noting the conference would share knowledge from the world’s foremost experts to protect and restore Ireland’s

Mid-size construction firms boost productivity by 20% with AI – but wider industry lagging

A

new survey, from the Dublinbased AI Institute, has found that mid-size firms in the construction industry have boosted productivity by as much as 20% in recent years by becoming early adopters of AI tools.

According to the report, AI in the Built Environment, the trend among mid-size firms stands in contrast to the rest of the construction industry, where fewer than one in three (30%) companies provide AI literacy training to staff, and just one in five (20%) have AI policies governing the use of AI tools.

The fallout of these failings, the report says, is that ‘shadow use’ of AI tools across the industry is leaving firms vulnerable to data breaches and other cybersecurity challenges.

It is also leading to a growing skills gap in both small and large companies, as staff at agile mid-size enterprises expand their skill sets to outpace smaller firms and become increasingly competitive against late-adopting larger rivals.

The AI in the Built Environment report, carried out by the AI Institute,

was officially launched at an event at Engineers Ireland. The AI Institute is a Dublin-based company offering AI training, strategic advice, and solutions support with implementing AI tools.

Among key findings, the report reveals: • Productivity: Mid-size companies have increased productivity by between 5% and 20% by acting early to create structures and policies to react to the rise of AI. Global firms, meanwhile, remain mired in indecision at the leadership level, with many found to have invested too early – without the requisite AI policy, change management or training strategy in place – too late, or not at all.

• Lack of training: More than four in five (81%) professionals reported having only basic or moderate AI knowledge, while almost half (46%) said the lack of formal training is preventing them from fully utilising potentially transformative technologies • Automation: Just one in five (20%) firms have identified processes

which could be automated using specialist AI solutions, highlighting how the potential of AI is being wasted across the industry.

• Data: Industry professionals reported that data is fragmented and siloed across disparate workflows, making it difficult to deploy effective, customised AI tools • Culture: Some firms reported a cultural resistance to new technology, with SMEs particularly reluctant to spend on digital technologies – this despite being well-placed to benefit due to their size and agility.

On top of calling for the introduction of formal AI policies and mandatory AI literacy training, the AI Institute report urges companies to standardise their data with the aim of creating industrywide protocols for homogenous data collection and sharing, to enable AI models to communicate reliably across different projects and between various stakeholders.

Maryrose Lyons, Founder of the AI Institute, says: “Our report, AI Adoption in the Built Environment, sets out clearly the challenges facing the construction industry in terms of AI adoption, the reluctance in many quarters to embrace the opportunity that AI brings, and the value of being a mid-size player with the ability to move early to implement a new AI strategy quickly.

“While several larger firms have made significant investments in AI, the impact of these investments has been limited by the lack of foundational knowledge and support in the form of AI policies and training. To be successful, company leaders must build their AI strategy from the bottom up, laying the groundwork to ensure that bigger AI investments will be effective later.”

Wilo Scores EcoVadis Platinum Rating for Fourth Year Running

ilo has achieved an EcoVadis Platinum rating for the fourth consecutive year, reflecting its commitment to adopting sustainable practices.

The firm scored 88 points, an increase on last year’s rating of 86.

The rating agency also graded the firm’s commitment to sustainability as “outstanding” for the second time.

Only one percent of companies audited by EcoVadis, now more than 150,000, achieve the platinum feat.

The renowned sustainability rating agency highlighted optimisations in Wilo’s risk and supplier management.

Other criteria include environmental awareness, labour conditions, ethics and sustainable sourcing.

In recent years, Wilo has reshaped its sustainability strategy around three areas of action. ‘Creating’ encompasses the contribution of the firm’s technology to areas spanning decarbonisation and improving water supply.

‘Caring’ reflects its commitment to acting responsibly towards the environment, its employees and wider society, including emission reduction efforts. ‘Connecting’ highlights the company’s dedication

to building strong international partnerships.

Richard Swinburne has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Wilo Ireland, one of the global leaders in water technology and energy-efficient pump solutions, as it targets growth in data centres, water management and traditional HVAC in residential and commercial areas.

With over 20 years of experience across the utilities, HVAC and industrial sectors, Richard possesses a wealth of knowledge in pump and water-delivery applications, with his most recent position being the Managing Director of Xylem Water Solutions Ireland.

EFCA calls for stronger EU action on water resilience

“Water resilience is not only an environmental necessity, it is a foundation for Europe’s economic and industrial strength. Consulting engineers are the most qualified and experienced industry professionals to design and implement the solutions that will make Europe water-smart, resilient, and competitive,” says Inés Ferguson, President, European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations (EFCA), as the federation publishes its latest position paper.

Water is a fundamental resource for people, ecosystems, and the economy. As such, EFCA strongly supports the elevation of water resilience as a key pillar of Europe’s climate, environmental, and industrial policies. However, Europe faces mounting water stress driven by climate related droughts and floods, ageing infrastructure, pollution, and underinvestment.

Consulting engineers call for an ambitious, integrated, and operational framework that fully leverages their expertise to safeguard Europe’s water resources, competitiveness, and societal well-being.

As water does not stop at national borders, stronger EU-level governance, harmonised planning, and the implementation of existing legislation are all essential.

Water resilience is absolutely critical to the EU’s strategic sectors, from batteries and chips to hydrogen and data centres. EFCA calls for “water-smart” planning, aligning industrial development with local water availability, efficiency, and reuse, while integrating nature-based solutions such as sponge cities, river restoration, and wetland rehabilitation.

CIBSE CIBSE Ireland Workshare delivers ‘exceptional’ new learning through Ethos Engineering and Designer Group

The latest CIBSE Ireland Workshare Exchange Programme concluded recently at a lunch gathering in the RDS Members’ Club. The participating companies were Ethos Engineering and Designer Group.

Devised to build and strengthen relationships between engineering and contracting companies in the building services sector, the core objective is for the participants to gain insights into the working practices of each other’s disciplines. The duration of the programme can vary, but ideally covers a three-month timeframe.

The 2025 programme proved exceptional with new learning outcomes, which will be incorporated into the next programme – shared over the recent lunch.

How the CIBSE Ireland Workshare Exchange Programme works The operation of the programme is quite simple. The two core participants are

Lighting Factfile 19: Lighting for Neurodiversity

The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has launched Lighting Factfile 19: Lighting for Neurodiversity.

Neurodiversity is a high-level term used to describe people who are not considered to be ‘neurotypical’. It is thought that at least 15% of people live with some form of neurodiversity.

These are recognised conditions such as attention deficit disorder (ADD), autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, synaesthesia (abnormal pupillary response), Tourette’s syndrome and variable attention stimulus trait

The ASHRAE Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) Advice to Your Younger Self 2.0 event recently convened in Dublin, drawing a significant number of student and young engineers to Pearse Street. This pivotal networking session was a unique opportunity for upcoming professionals in the Building Services Engineering and the wider built environment sector to receive direct, invaluable career insights from an exceptional panel of industry veterans. Dedicated to sharing the lessons they wish they had known when they were starting out, the event was proudly sponsored by Ardmac, Ethos Engineering, Passive Dynamics, System Air, and ThermoHeat.

This year’s distinguished event, hosted by Tunji Adeyemi, featured a powerhouse lineup, sharing pivotal decisions, inspiring stories, and actionable advice gleaned from decades of leadership and experience in the field.

Colm Devin, CCO, Ethos Engineering, brought over 30 years of experience to the discussion. He shared his journey from the ambition of a start-up to leading a people-first international consultancy, offering deep insights into forming strategic partnerships and navigating the rapid expansion of the data centre sector.

Ciarán McCabe, MD, Passive Dynamics, a Chartered Engineer

and the founder of the leading sustainability consultancy, is a noted expert in energy efficiency and performance modelling.

Beyond his technical acumen, he is a passionate mentor, emphasising the critical balance between striving for professional excellence and maintaining personal wellbeing.

Nicola Jordan, EPCM Technical Director at DPS Global Group, offered insights drawn from almost 30 years of experience leading multidisciplinary teams across diverse sectors, including semiconductor, healthcare, and conservation, she shared essential perspectives on the demands of technical leadership and the strategic art of resolving complex engineering challenges.

The panel delivered several key pieces of salient advice to the gathered young engineers, stressing the importance of both professional attitude and personal development. They encouraged the audience never to be shy about speaking up—a necessary trait for effective collaboration and problem-solving.

Equally important, they advised, is never to be afraid to ask for advice or a colleague’s opinion on a problem. They cautioned against getting so comfortable in one’s role to presume to know it all, emphasising that learning in engineering is a continuous process. On the subject of professional presence, a potent reminder was given to get off devices and meet people face to face when possible, fostering better communication and connection. Finally, a strong emphasis was placed on the necessity of maintaining one’s technical edge through regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.

Paddy Smee showed excellent accuracy to win the Nearest the Pin competition. In the nine-hole competitions, Stuart Gaffney was victorious on the Front 9, while Johnny Lynagh showed his form on the Back 9.

Building Services Battle on the Green: – BTU Golf Society Triumphs in inaugural competition against RACGS!

he Irish building services engineering sector saw a new competition ignite in October, moving from the desktop to the driving range.

On 23 October, the BTU Golf Society and the RACGS (Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Golf Society) clashed in a highly anticipated inaugural golf competition. The spectacular setting for this historic event was the pristine Killeen Golf Club.

Perfect Conditions, Perfect Play The day was blessed with excellent weather, which set the stage for an incredibly enjoyable and high-spirited competition for all participants. The camaraderie and competitive spirit between the two societies were a testament to the strong community within the building services industry.

Victory for BTU Golf Society In a closely fought match, it was the BTU Golf Society who emerged victorious, clinching the win with a final score of 4.5 to 2.5.

Congratulations to the BTU team for their excellent performance and for

taking home the very first perpetual trophy!

A feastful conclusion The day concluded with a wonderful meal held in the club restaurant, where players from both sides shared stories from the course. The presentation of the perpetual trophy was the perfect finale, marking the start of what promises to be a fantastic annual tradition.

Wavin’s New AquaCell NG System – With Built In Flexibility

T

o help manage excessive rainfall and improve climate resilience, Wavin, one of Ireland’s leading plumbing and drainage solutions providers, has expanded its innovative AquaCell range of infiltration /attenuation tanks with the addition of the new AquaCell NG. Designed to give contractors maximum flexibility on site, the system delivers considerable benefits.

Next Generation Performance The Wavin AquaCell NG system is produced using 100% recycled polypropylene and, in order to boost sustainability across all stages of a project, is fully recyclable at end of life. The design of the lightweight, compact, stackable unit delivers significant space savings, meaning site storage and transportation is reduced.

In fact, the AquaCell NG system requires four times less storage space on site, allows for four times more units in each delivery, and requires four times less unloading time than previous systems. This results in both significant environmental and cost benefits.

With modern construction top of mind, this new independently

tested and certified system delivers a huge advance in the speed of attenuation tank construction.

Aided by push-fit connections and a tool-free build, the new system is three times faster to install than previous generations of AquaCell, while continuing to offer the same volume capacity. A distinctive circular guide on top of each unit helps ensure correct orientation and rightfirst-time installation. These built-in efficiencies mean less time spent on the excavation area, improving onsite safety for construction teams. In addition, open inspection channels, with no internal walls, enable the deployment of inspection and cleaning equipment.

Flexibility on Site As the Wavin Aquacell NG system has recently launched in Ireland, it’s interesting to see how it has been successfully applied on two quite different projects in the UK. Demonstrating the system’s flexibility, both projects posed specific challenges in terms of space, efficiency and the required installation time frame.

Firstly, a 110 home residential site in Nottinghamshire, for which main contractor M&J Evans needed a stormwater management system that was sustainable, easy to install and fit for the long term. With so Wavin AquaCell NG install taking place on site in Nottinghamshire

many homes being built on site, the contractor needed to work quickly and efficiently without impacting other trades. There was limited storage on site and limited access times for delivery owing to the busy nature of the build. Installation also took place during a very cold December with temperatures dropping to as low as -7°, so for the safety of the installation team, the system had to be quick and easy to install. Wavin Aquacell NG was selected and successfully installed in just five days, covering an area of 560m3.

Secondly, a development by Wain Homes in Wiltshire, was on a site that presented significant design and technical challenges. Five attenuation tanks were required but site restrictions meant space was limited and design needed to be carefully optimised. Key to the project was the tank’s approval by Wessex Water.

Working with Wavin’s Aquacell NG system meant fewer deliveries to site thanks to its compact design, less excavation time on site and easier handling, supporting both efficiency and health and safety. This combination of speed, sustainablility and long-term assurance meant that Wessex Water approval was achieved.

A brief introduction to district heating pipe technologies Although district heating is a standard utility throughout much of the EU, it remains a niche technology in Ireland, typically limited to communal schemes rather than large-scale networks. Greentherm Managing Director ENDA RUXTON breaks down the technical composition of these piping systems, emphasising that their installation occupies a unique ‘skillset crossroads’ that demands expertise in both mechanical contracting and civil engineering

istrict heating pipe technologies, by which I mean pre-insulated rigid or flexible pipes, have had a minimal usage in the Irish market, comparison to other EU countries.

There are a handful of district projects implemented in the entire country.

There are many more communal projects utilising district piping, for the purposes of clarity, communal, by definition is a centralised system serving apartment/housing within the same development.

Pre-insulated pipe installations by there nature sit on a skillset crossroads between the works typically undertaken by a mechanical contractor and civil engineering works.

Pre-insulated pipes can be divided into two key categories, rigid pipes and flexible pipes. There is some common terminology to both types of products.

Carrier pipes This is the encased pipe used to carry the liquid for heating or cooling.

Flexible pipes are typically cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) or multilayer piping.

Rigid pipes can be P235GH steel, stainless steel, copper, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), PPR, etc, with pipes ranging in size

from DN20 to approximately DN1100.

As a general rule, carrier pipes are manufactured by third-party manufacturers, procured by the preinsulated pipe manufacturer and encapsulated in the finished product. In essence, in almost all cases, the preinsulated pipe manufacturer’s expertise is in the application of insulation and the external casing, along with features such as leak detection and trace heating cables.

Insulation The most common insulation utilised in rigid and flexible pipes is polyurethane foam. Typically, this has a maximum operating temperature between 120140C. Polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation is sometimes employed as an alternative to achieve temperatures up to 150C. Some manufacturers offer hybrid insulation solutions using, for example, rockwool, adjacent to the pipe surrounded by a rigid insulation product to achieve higher operating temperatures for applications such as steam.

The insulation density for rigid pipes is defined in EN253 as a minimum value of 55 kg/m3. Depending on the manufacturing methods employed by the producer, insulation density can range

from 55 kg/m3 to approximatley75 kg/ m3. There are specific technical reasons for this based on the particular process utilised.

Pipe casing The normal external pipe casing used in district pipes is typically manufactured with HDPE. The purpose is to encase the other product elements with the benefit of durability and UV resistance.

Various manufacturers use different HDPE densities, typically ranging from PE80 to PE100. The higher the numerical value the greater the material density, hence typically more durable.

Other pipe casing options are available depending on the application such as spiral wound galvanised finish.

Leak detection systems There are two fundamental types of leak detection systems; basic systems that alert to a general system problem; and, accurate systems that provide an exact location.

Basic leak detection typically consist of two copper wires embedded in the insulation layer, used in conjunction with an electronic alarm. This provides a simple leak detection alarm, which highlights an issue without disclosing the position of the problem in the network.

A more accurate solution exists that can provide the exact position of a network leak such that provided by manufacturers such as Ratmon. Two x 2 wire MSC-1 cables are embedded in the pipe insulation during manufacture.

connections between pipes are crimped and heat shrunk. Once the finished circuit is coupled with the necessary electronic supervision hardware, it provides accurate location detection. The MSC-1 cable is fully insulated ensuring that condensation cannot occur, causing a false alarm.

Some manufacturers of flexible pipes claim to provide embedded leak detection cables. At the time of writing this is not yet known to have been

Axial press requires the use of a proprietary press gun, where pressing is a one-time attempt. Bolted compression can be fitting with the use of ordinary hand tools and can be retightened if required. Pressing fittings in restricted spaces can also pose a significant challenge.

Rigid pipes with steel carrier pipes are welded and are finished using various types of jointing kits, such as shrink jointed and electrofusion sleeves. This provides a continuation of the pipe casing at the welded joints. Once applied a two-part insulation compound is poured inside the sleeve to provide insulation continuity.

Many jointing systems allow the recording of electrofusion weld quality, by scanning a local barcode and recording the weld quality to a cloud service. This provides an auditable quality trail for a given installation.

There are many additional system components such as a wide variety of fittings and valves used in a typical installation, along with technical considerations, like expansion, whih are simply too extensive to detail within this article.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal join European pilot to transform public fleet into mobile sensor networks

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Fingal County Council have joined a European pilot project that transforms everyday public service vehicles—such as waste trucks and buses—into mobile data collectors. Equipped with smart sensors, these vehicles will help detect damaged or missing traffic signs, monitor air quality and allergen levels, and identify road surface defects as they move through the city.

The initiative is led by researchers from the FinEst Centre for Smart Cities in Tallinn, who are equipping municipal vehicles with advanced sensor technology. This system enables cities to receive near-instant, hyperlocal data to support smarter urban management.

The city managed vehicles that move throughout the city every day will act as mobile data collectors, processing information with the help of artificial intelligence and sending only key results to a secure cloud environment, where the data is immediately accessible to the city. The advantage of these moving data collectors is that they make use of the existing vehicle fleet, avoiding the need to install costly stationary sensor networks.

This is an experimental project designed to assess how well the new system works in practice. Dublin is not the only city in Europe testing this kind of smart sensing technology — the same system is being used in Tallinn, Estonia and Pula, Croatia.

The flexibility of the system allows data from all three cities to be collected and compared.

Passive fire protection manufacturer Promat, part of the Etex Group, has published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for 86% of its products to provide transparent, third-party verified data to customers, ensuring they have access to credible sustainability information to inform specification.

As part of its ClearChange sustainability programme, Promat has increased transparency by providing customers access to environmental declarations for the majority of board products in its current portfolio enabling them to make informed decisions, compare products and potentially reduce their own environmental footprint.

Promat’s EPDs are the result of rigorous assessments that are independently verified for impartiality and compliant with industry standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2/A1. These verifications are supported by a dedicated team at Promat who work to ensure that its wide range of products and technologies are covered by EPDs. Current EPDs include Promat’s range of medium density calcium silicate boards including PROMATECT®, SUPALUX®, and MASTERBOARD® which are used in vital building and industrial applications. The EPDs for these products detail the upfront embodied carbon figure of the passive fire protection boards and include information on packaging, waste treatment and end-of-life recycling to evaluate the total embodied carbon figure across the lifecycle of the product.

Ireland Electrified announces new leadership and launch of major action plan Ireland Electrified, the trade body for the nation’s electrification industry, has appointed Anna Conlan as its new Head and Helen O’Sullivan as its new Chairperson. The organisation has also launched Ireland’s first Electrification Action Plan, a blueprint for electrifying the country’s energy system to deliver clean, efficient, and affordable electricity to Irish families and businesses.

The critical plan arrives just ahead of EU proposals to accelerate electrification and end reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Wasted wind power: CEO calls for action on energy poverty

Sensori names Hugh’s House 2026 charity partner

Sensori has announced Hugh’s House as its charity partner for 2026. This year-long partnership will see Sensori employees across Ireland raise vital funds and awareness for the charity that supports families with seriously ill children.

Hugh’s House provides free accommodation, 365 days a year, to families while their children are inpatients at Temple Street, the Rotunda, the Coombe, and Holles Street. By offering a comfortable, close-by place to stay, the charity removes a huge financial and emotional stress during the most challenging times.

Since opening in 2015, Hugh’s House has supported over 1,000 families, relying entirely on self-funding.

Sensori’s commitment includes various fundraising events, employee volunteering, and awareness campaigns throughout 2026 to help the charity continue its incredible mission.

Alan Wyley, CEO of EnergyCloud Ireland, recently delivered a stark message to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage, highlighting the “truly shocking” levels of wasted renewable energy since the government committed to addressing energy poverty earlier this year.

Speaking on the topic of “Supplying Excess Renewable Energy to Homes Experiencing Energy Poverty,” Alan Wyley referenced the Programme for Government, published in January, 2025, which pledged to explore legislation to divert surplus renewable energy to those in fuel poverty.

“The levels of waste since this commitment was made are truly shocking,” Alan Wyley stated.

According to figures from Eirgrid, 962 GWh of renewable wind energy was “dispatched down,” or wasted, in the less than nine months leading up to 30 September. The CEO quantified this loss by pointing out this is enough renewable energy to heat 321 million tanks of hot water.

It has an average retail value of €341m. He calculated the daily cost of inaction, noting that, on average, almost €1.4m of clean renewable wind energy was wasted every single day since the Programme for Government was published.

His testimony puts renewed pressure on the committee and the government to enact the promised legislation and ensure renewable energy benefits all communities, particularly those struggling with fuel costs.

In the third quarter of 2025 An Coimisiún Pleanála approved just one new wind farm – around 7% of the volume of wind energy needed during this period to keep Ireland on track with its Climate Action Plan targets.

That is according to the latest quarterly report published today by Wind Energy Ireland on the number of wind energy projects getting through the planning system, which also reveals a big increase in the number of applications from new projects to the commission.

The new wind farm approved by An Coimisiún Pleanála has a capacity of 46 MW. Wind Energy Ireland estimates that, to achieve the 9,000 MW of onshore wind energy required by 2030 in the Climate Action Plan, An Coimisiún Pleanála would have needed to approve 665 MW during this period.

Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, said: “Irish people want clean, affordable and secure energy. That is what wind farms deliver but we will need more of them to provide the power Irish families, businesses and communities demand.

“It is disappointing that quarters two and three of this year have been so bad for planning decisions on renewable energy projects from An Coimisiún Pleanála.

“Before we can build new wind farms, they have to make it through the planning system and right now, we are not getting nearly enough projects approved to get back on track for 2030.

“The reality is projects are going in for planning in much greater amounts than we’re getting decisions which is creating a growing backlog and undermining efforts to connect Ireland’s most affordable source of new electricity generation.”

EDUCATION & TRAINING Galway student’s renewable energy storage project wins Siemens Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Award 2025

A hydrogen-powered renewable energy storage system developed by Atlantic Technological University Galway graduate, James Swift, has been awarded the Siemens Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Award 2025 by Engineers Ireland.

This annual competition, which took place on Wednesday 22 October, showcases projects by third-level engineering students that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and commercial potential, and this year marked 25 years of sponsorship by Siemens.

Five finalist teams were invited to present their projects, which ranged from biomedical devices to energy innovations, to a panel of judges at the competition final in Engineers Ireland.

James Swift, a graduate of Energy Engineering at Atlantic Technological University Galway, received the award for developing a prototype hydrogen-based energy storage system designed to harness surplus renewable electricity and convert it into clean, reusable power.

James commented: “I am delighted and honoured to be awarded the Siemens Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Award 2025 by Engineers Ireland. This project set out to

Radiator sizing in the heat pump era: Why one size does not always fit all FRANK DONOHOE of Donohoe Heating Services reflects on how the heating market has evolved over the past 15 years. While radiator styles have shifted toward the decorative, the fundamental physics of heat loss remain unchanged. Frank writes that as the industry pivots toward heat pumps, the reliance on ‘rule of thumb’ calculations can lead to inefficient systems and cold homes, particularly in retrofitted homes, making professional design and understanding manufacturer specifications more critical than ever.

I

met Robbie Cousins recently, and we reflected on how I had seen the domestic heating market change over the past 15 years since setting up Donohoe Heating Services. I looked back at an article I had written for BS News in 2012.

After reading through it, the core observations remain valid.

The article focused on radiator selection, including styles and the correct calculation of heat loss and subsequent radiator selection.

The Aesthetic Shift Within the selection of radiator styles, there has been a shift towards more aesthetic choices, with decorative radiators featuring more regularly, particularly in one-off houses. Multi-column and vertical radiators are far more common now; towel rails, of varying colours, anthracite and black being the most common, regularly feature in bathrooms.

Understanding Delta T and Standards I identified the confusion of the Delta T’s (dt’s) impact on the

radiator’s performance. At that time, some manufacturers were indicating outputs at dt50C and/or dt60C, the latter giving a perceived increased heat output performance.

However, these outputs were based on temperatures of 90C flow/70C return and 20C room, versus the dt50C EN442 Standard of 75C/65C/20C. This gave an incorrect output, resulting in a deficiency in heating performance from the radiator units.

In recent years, I’ve also noticed EN442 and EN14037 Standards being regularly inadvertently mixed up on specifications. EN442 is for radiators and EN14037 is for radiant panels.

I then introduced the impact of condensing boilers, which were becoming more common at the time, and their lower flow/ return temperatures they used for efficiency.

I mentioned the arrival of heat pumps further complicating this, given the lower operating temperatures.

to be the solution to all domestic housing applications. If I’m honest, I’m on the fence. I believe they have their part to play for sure, but are probably best suited to newbuild A-rated houses, providing the system is professionally designed and installed.

I have been asked to supply radiators to houses that are 70 to 100 years old, with no insulation, single-glazed windows, etc., and the client has told me they are using a heat pump provided by their plumber.

The Pitfalls of Retrofitting I have become involved in more projects of late where the client has invested heavily in retrofit insulation, installed a heat pump with a combination of underfloor heating and radiators.

A common complaint I hear is that they are achieving an internal temperature of 15/16C during prolonged lower external temperatures. On examining the heat loss of these houses, I regularly see low heat-loss estimates and radiators that are too small to provide the heat required at the

temperatures delivered by the heat pump.

Moving Beyond ‘Rule of Thumb’ I’m still seeing rule of thumb heat loss calculations being applied, typically watts/M2 or watts M3!!!!!!!!!

These are among the reasons I believe detailed heat-loss calculations and full design are vital to maximise the benefits of heat pump use and fulfil end-user aspirations.

The Impact on Sizing and Efficiency In sizing radiators, I depend on heat pump suppliers to provide me with the flow/return temperatures applicable to their products. I typically use 45/40C flow/return Temperatures, as I understand the COP is higher at these temperatures, thus maximising the efficiency for the end user. I have, however, seen flow & return temperatures as high as 55/60C being advised, with no warnings/ advice given as to the decrease in efficiencies when these higher temperatures are being achieved.

Typically, heat pumps are efficient down to 10/7C external air temperature. During prolonged cold spells below 3C, the compressor is forced to work harder, which decreases the COP closer to 1,

negating the benefit of using a heat pump in the first place (over, say, a direct electric heater).

The technology is evolving rapidly, with new, higher temperatures being achieved, and the industry needs to communicate these and indicate their impact on heat pump performance relevant to emitter selection.

Let’s take the example of the heat loss above and illustrate the impact of lower flow/return temperatures currently applicable on the radiator output and size.

Heat loss 1114 Watts Typical Compact Type 22, 600 High as a base, nearest to output is 700mm Long rated 1223 watts @ dt50C (75C/65C/20C) Depending on the output, it is now common to see two radiators in a room or even a triple panel being used. Radiator manufacturers are now stocking triples to meet

market demand.

A Call for Correct Application Given the encouragement and grant support being applied for heat pump use, I feel the industry needs to focus on the correct application of the product, correctly sized and correctly commissioned. To this end, plumbers should engage with manufacturers/suppliers to ensure the correct calculations are being made. In doing so, the end user is best served.

One size does not always fit all.

TGD B and the talent crisis: Navigating Ireland’s mandatory fire sprinkler regulations

T

his year, Ireland’s fire suppression market underwent a fundamental transformation, triggered by the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and the Building Regulations (Part B Amendment) Regulations 2024 , effective 01 May, 2025.

This legislative overhaul mandates automatic fire sprinkler systems in specific industrial, logistics, warehousing and storage facilities, aligning national standards with international best practices.

The key driver is the revised Technical Guidance Document B (TGD B), which reclassifies industrial risk and offers a massive incentive for compliance.

The 14,000 sq metre tipping point The regulation introduces a powerful economic constraint: the maximum permissible fire compartment size is restricted to 2,000 square metres. Crucially, installing an automatic fire suppression system increases this threshold sevenfold to 14,000 square metres.

For modern logistics and manufacturing, which rely on vast, efficient floor plates, this is a de facto mandate. Developers are now effectively compelled to install sprinklers to construct commercially viable, scalable assets that meet tenant demand.

Furthermore, the new rules redefine technical risk: High-Hazard Storage: Any high-

rack storage exceeding seven metres in height is now classified as ‘High Hazard’. This triggers stringent compliance with standards like IS EN 12845 or even global standards like NFPA or FM Global, often requiring advanced Early Suppression, Fast Response (ESFR) sprinkler heads.

Residential Compliance: Suppression systems are also mandatory in apartment buildings or student accommodation where the topmost floor exceeds 15 metres in height.

Broad Scope: The regulations apply not only to new construction but also to “material alterations”— meaning retrofitting older assets (subdivisions, change of use) is unavoidable for asset longevity.

Retrofitting is notoriously complex and expensive, creating the highestmargin, yet most challenging, work for the fire protection industry.

The Economic Equation: Cost, Value, and Risk The mandatory regulations have fundamentally recalibrated the cost and valuation structure of industrial

Mandatory sprinklers mean higher development costs. Installation requires specialised infrastructure, including dedicated water tanks, hydraulic systems, and pipe networks, adding “several euros per sq metre” to construction CapEx. This complexity, combined with the need for detailed compliance verification, is driving up professional fees for fire safety engineers.

This dynamic favours largescale greenfield projects, where high capital expenditure can be efficiently amortised across vast floor areas, putting pressure on margins for smaller developments and making retrofits disproportionately expensive.

Value Bifurcation The market is splitting into two clear categories: Compliant Assets: Post-2025, sprinkler-protected buildings command a “Compliance Premium”.

This premium is justified by a reduced risk profile and long-term financial benefits.

Obsolete Stock: Older, unsprinklered industrial properties risk value erosion and commercial obsolescence, especially for bluechip multinational tenants who demand resilient, high-specification safety standards.

The investment also yields significant operational benefits.

Sprinkler-protected properties qualify for considerably lower insurance premiums , offsetting the higher rental costs faced by occupiers. This reduced operational risk is critical for high-value sectors like data centres and life sciences.

2026 Headwinds: Capacity, Cost, and Constraint While regulatory demand is guaranteed, the primary strategic challenge for the Irish market in 2026 will be managing severe structural constraints related to specialised talent, supply chain volatility, and inflation.

Specialised Talent Crisis Ireland faces a general talent shortage, with a record 83% of employers reporting difficulty filling vacancies across all sectors (ManpowerGroup Ireland survey 2025). This is compounded in the construction industry, particularly for Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) professionals critical for complex fire suppression systems.

The demand surge for sitespecific industrial suppression requires scarce, certified fire protection engineers. The average salary for a fire protection engineer in Ireland is already substantial at €86,721 (Economic Research Institute). The competition for certified expertise is translating directly into higher labour costs and project bottlenecks. Contractors with accredited certification, such as LPS 1048 or FIRAS status, are best positioned to manage the quality and compliance required for TGD B High Hazard installations.

Inflation and Supply Chain Volatility The construction sector faces persistent cost inflation, forecasted at 4-5% in 2025 and 4-6% in 2026 (Arcadis Autumn 2025 Construction Market Overview Report). However, the niche fire protection segment faces amplified pressures due to global supply chain volatility, geopolitical tensions, and soaring energy costs.

Contractors must adopt “agility” and “multimodal solutions” to protect production schedules and secure essential specialty components like high-capacity fire pumps.

Dual Compliance and the Digital Future The market is simultaneously wrestling with regulatory safety mandates and stringent environmental rules, accelerating a shift toward technology-driven solutions.

For industrial operators using foam suppression, the 2025/2026 period introduces a complex “dual compliance shock”: not only must

they install new water sprinkler systems (TGD B), but they must also decommission and replace existing PFAS and PFOS-containing firefighting foams .

Critical environmental deadlines include: 01 January, 2026: Global SOLAS ban on PFOS foam takes effect for new builds and requires replacement on existing vessels.

10 April 10, 2026: PFHxA (a C6 PFAS substance) and related compounds will be restricted from use in firefighting foam under REACH restrictions.

This mandates an expensive and disruptive transition to FluorineFree Foams (FFF), creating a new market for environmental remediation and disposal services.

Digitalisation and Managed Services To combat labour constraints and manage complexity, the industry is accelerating its shift to digitalisation: Modular Systems: Irish firms like Writech have secured major investment to scale up the use of 3D BIM technology and off-site prefabricated modular fire suppression systems. This methodology minimises reliance on scarce onsite labour and enhances quality control.

Smart Systems: End-users are embracing intelligent, connected suppression systems for enhanced compliance and efficiency.

Managed services, including remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and 24/7 central monitoring, are projected to record significant growth. This shift converts CapEx to OpEx, guaranteeing a stable, servicebased revenue stream for certified contractors post-installation.

In conclusion The regulatory framework of 2025 has cemented the fire sprinkler system as the single most critical investment for new Irish industrial real estate, driving a multi-year wave of investment, innovation, and structural challenge through the sector.

What is your current job and with what company?

I am a mechanical engineer with Black & White Engineering.selection.

What drew you to the field of engineering, more specifically building services, and what was your path to becoming an engineer and developing your earlier career?

I enjoyed maths and physics in secondary school. I attended an all-girls secondary school and had little to no exposure to woodwork, technical drawing or any other relevant subject to engineering.

Therefore, when I chose engineering courses to pursue in university, it was unexpected.

I knew I wanted a career that included maths, problem-solving and planning, so I attended open days to learn more about options in relation to the aforementioned.

I graduated from TU Dublin (formerly DIT) at the Bolton Street campus, which was a very different experience from school,

but I enjoyed it completely. I then joined PM Group, where I completed a graduate programme that kick-started my engineering career. I was based on-site full-time for pharmaceutical projects and gained first-hand experience with equipment, utilities, and the overall construction process.

I also worked abroad on major builds, which gave me invaluable insight into projects from early design through to completion.

Among your various responsibilities, what would you say is your favourite part of the job, and why?

I enjoy coordination. Working with design teams, suppliers and contractors from an early stage in concept design, trying to work together to remove clashes on models or arrange equipment in the most optimal configuration.

What stand out as career highlights to date?

A recent highlight was travelling to the Philippines for a Black & White Engineering conference focused on the progression of data-centre design. I had the opportunity to present alongside colleagues, take part in workshops, and learn from experts across the business. It was an incredible experience to broaden my knowledge and expand my network within the industry.

Earlier in my career, I was fully responsible for several community projects, which gave me my first real experience of project management. After my first year, I received a Community Co-ordinator Champion award, which encouraged me to continue developing my project management skills. It also motivated me to complete a project management course with UCD, earning a distinction, and both have been meaningful highlights in my career.

I am curious to see how quickly the data-centre sector will evolve. The scale and speed of growth over the past few years have been immense, and it’s interesting to imagine what the next major trend will be and how much it will shape the types of projects we work on. Whether it’s new cooling technologies, advancements in efficiency, or entirely new facility typologies driven by emerging digital demands, the pace of change keeps the work fresh and challenging.

I’m also fascinated by how collaboration is developing across the industry. With so many projects now involving global teams, the way we share models, coordinate live updates, and manage information is online and depends on digital platforms. These tools need to advance, and the potential for more integrated, real-time, and efficient global collaboration is immense.

Who or what are your primary sources of support, both professionally and personally (networks), as you navigate your engineering career?

My mentors have been the greatest source of support. Both formal and informal mentors have played a huge role in my development.

My first mentor, Ger Kenny, had enormous confidence in me at the earliest stage of my career.

After our first meeting, he handed me a book from his MBA studies because he genuinely believed in my potential. That encouragement has stayed with me.

I’ve also significantly benefited from Women in Building Services Engineering (WIBSE). It has been a fantastic way to meet other female engineers, learn from their experiences and gain inspiration for my own career path.

What bodies are you a member of, and how important is this to you?

I am a member of CIBSE and Engineers Ireland. I sit on the CIBSE and WIBSE (Women in Building Services Engineering) committees.

Contributing to the future direction of CIBSE in Ireland has been extremely rewarding. Being involved in events and educational initiatives is important to me, particularly because I believe in showing younger students and emerging engineers the range of opportunities and supportive networks available to them.

Engineers Ireland has also been essential to my development. The access to courses and CPDs has helped me build both technical and professional skills. Engineers Ireland hosting the Toastmasters group on Clyde Road has been especially valuable for me. It has played a major role in improving my

presentation skills and confidence in public speaking.

If you could offer one piece of advice to a younger engineer at an earlier stage of their career, what would it be?

Invest in yourself - both your knowledge and your network. Take courses, complete CPDs, attend events and conferences; continuous learning is invaluable. If you want employers to invest in you, you should be willing to invest in yourself, too.

Equally, build and use your network. Attend industry events, meet people, and stay in touch.

If someone presents on a topic that resonates with you, follow up on LinkedIn and continue the conversation. Asking for advice or answers is a compliment. It shows you value that person’s experience.

Don’t be afraid to reach out or seek guidance; most people are more than willing to help.

Connecting Europe at high speed – The EU’s ambitious rail plan The European Commission’s new transport strategy aims to deliver a fully interoperable high-speed rail network by 2040. MIHAI BARCANESCU, Policy Manager, European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations (EFCA), explores this transformative vision, which targets faster travel, makes rail central to Europe’s decarbonisation goals and boosts economic cohesion. Achieving it would require an estimated €345bn to €550bn in investment, relying on accelerated infrastructure rollout, regulatory harmonisation, private funding, and the expertise of Europe’s consulting engineers.

n 05 November 2025, the European Commission (EC) unveiled probably its most ambitious transport initiative in history: a strategy to accelerate the development of a continent-wide high-speed rail network. Building on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the plan sets a clear timeline for achieving a fully

interoperable high-speed rail system by 2040.

Vision and objectives The plan is not just about speed, it is about integration, sustainability and resilience. By 2030, journeys such as Berlin–Copenhagen will take four hours instead of seven, and by 2035 Sofia and Athens will be connected

in six hours. New cross-border links will enable travel between all major EU cities, for example from Paris to Lisbon via Madrid, or by connecting the Baltic countries to the wider EU network.

In terms of climate action, rail currently emits less than 1% of the EU transport greenhouse gases. A high-speed network is meant to attract millions of passengers each year and making it central to Europe’s decarbonisation plans. Regarding competitiveness, the plan will ensure faster, reliable connections which will boost economic integration. There is also an economic and social cohesion benefit – improved transport connectivity will foster territorial cohesion and help peripheral regions stabilise, if not grow.

The Plan’s Four Strategic Pillars The Plan’s first strategic pillar concerns accelerating investments and infrastructure rollout. More specifically, the plan introduces binding timelines for removing cross-border bottlenecks by 2027, together with the identification of line segments where service speeds above 250 km/h are viable. The estimated investments are of approx. €345bn by 2040, potentially rising to €550bn for higher-speed upgrades.

Such high investment needs will be addressed through a dedicated

EU financing strategy, supported by a strategic dialogue with Member States and industry. Private investments will be essential, as the EU and national budgets would be unable to cope with this burden alone. This should ultimately lead to a High-Speed Rail Deal, a multilateral public and private stakeholders’ commitment to mobilise investments for both high-speed rail lines and rolling stock.

In addition, new legislation will be introduced to support this Plan while at the same time closing some existing regulatory gaps. The objectives include supporting a second-hand market for rolling stock while prevent anticompetitive scrapping, improving cross-border ticketing and booking systems by 2026, and removing entry barriers for new rail operators.

Boosting innovation and interoperability will also be necessary to achieve the Plan within the predicted time and budget.

A lot of efforts will be dedicated to accelerating the deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), for the harmonisation of the numerous rail technical standards and other regulations, to make permitting shorter and more predictable, and for the further digitalisation of the sector.

Expected Benefits The first and foremost advantage will be the reduction in travel time. Many popular (and congested) routes will see journey times cut by half. This will also have a positive impact on the connected routes and the destination cities.

As already mentioned, the environmental impact will be considerable, through the reduction of fossil fuels consumption, and CO2 and other emissions alike. Less fossil fuels used also means less fossil fuels imported, which is also part of the EU’s plans to strengthen its energy security and strategic autonomy while reducing the reliance on energy imports.

tourism sectors in Europe, enhancing the Union’s economic growth and competitiveness. It will also help decongest other transport modes, especially in terms of passenger flows. Such positive cascading effects will ensure a better connectivity for all European regions, including islands such as Cyprus or Ireland, and improved quality of life for citizens.

The Role of Europe’s Consulting Engineers Consultancies and EFCA’s Role The high-speed rail plan represents a transformative opportunity also for the engineering consultancy sector.

With over 10,000 firms and one million professionals represented by EFCA, our federation believes that our sector is uniquely positioned to deliver the critical expertise required for the achievement of this panEuropean transport infrastructure.

European consulting engineers have already been delivering key components of the European highspeed rail development to date, from planning and feasibility analyses to the design of the network and the integration of a multitude of technical and operational solutions. Moreover, consulting engineers can integrate

risk and resilience management in the new investments, in terms of both natural and man-made threats.

EFCA and its members have participated in discussions with EU and Member States’ officials, including Mr Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, as of spring 2025 regarding how the plan should be implemented with optimal costs while maintaining the quality requirements. Moreover, the sector is committed to continue the cooperation with all relevant stakeholders, to achieve this impressive goal.

In conclusion The European Commission’s highspeed rail plan is a transformative vision for Europe’s mobility future.

If implemented effectively and on time, it will redefine travel across the continent, truly making rail the backbone of sustainable transport.

Success will depend on coordinated investment, better procurement practices, regulatory harmonisation and technological innovation. The next decade will be critical in turning this vision into reality.

Mark Cullen appointed CEO of the HSA The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has announced the appointment of Mark Cullen as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

He had been serving as Interim CEO since earlier this year.

Over a 25-year career with the HSA, Mark Cullen has held a wide range of leadership and operational roles, developing a deep knowledge of workplace health and safety issues as well as the Authority’s broader regulatory responsibilities in chemicals, product safety and national accreditation. A qualified civil engineer, he previously worked in the UK construction industry as an engineer in the private sector.

Speaking on his appointment, Mark Cullen said: “I am honoured to accept the position of CEO of the Health and Safety Authority.

Having worked with the organisation for more than 25 years, I have a deep understanding of both the breadth and importance of our remit - from protecting workers’ health and safety to ensuring chemicals and products are used and managed safely, and delivering a national accreditation service that underpins quality and trust.
