Global players in the aerospace industry, such as Boeing, Cessna, GE Aviation, Honda Aircraft, Lockheed Martin, Spirit AeroSystems and Boom Supersonic, call North Carolina home. North Carolina boasts the country’s second-fastest growing aerospace manufacturing sector, which includes aerospace maintenance and military aviation enterprises, 14 commercial-airline operators and 26 air-freight companies. And the state is at the forefront of innovations that are propelling the growth of unmanned aircraft systems, better known as drones.

According to the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation:

• Each year, more than 50 million passengers ﬂy into and out of the state’s 72 public and 300-plus private airports, heliports and landing areas.

• Commercial and general aviation airports generate about $31 billion annually, while providing more than 123,000 jobs.

• More than 20,000 drones in North Carolina are registered with the Federal Aviation Administration – including hundreds used by businesses and local and state government agencies.

ELEVATION AT GTCC

The aviation program at Guilford Technical Community College has been ﬂying high for more than 50 years. Now GTCC is poised to offer a new pipeline of skilled labor in the ﬁeld, as Boom Supersonic builds its Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Supporting this welcome addition to local industry, GTCC will construct an expansive 100,000-square-foot aviation center on its Cameron Campus, complementing the existing T.H. Davis Aviation Center, located adjacent to the runways at Piedmont Triad International Airport. GTCC is well on its way to securing funds for the new aviation center, and college leaders will likely take bids for the initial construction as soon as Summer 2024, with the hope of completing construction by Summer 2026.

In addition to cutting-edge facilities, GTCC offers a number of programs in aerospace manufacturing, aviation systems, aviation electronics (avionics), and aviation management, not to mention the Aviation Manufacturing Quick Careers Program (AMQCP), a fast-track for students seeking jobs in the ﬁeld. Aviation students can even earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree on-site at GTCC, thanks to an articulation agreement between the college and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Wayne Community College’s aviation program represents a pivotal hub for aspiring professionals seeking a comprehensive and hands-on education. For more than 50 years, the program has harnessed the rich heritage of aviation in the region while embracing the cutting-edge advancements shaping the industry today.

WCC offers an associate degree pathway in Aviation Systems Technology in addition to diplomas in Airframe and Powerplant technology. Students can also continue their education at East Carolina University to earn a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology through a transfer agreement.

The program fosters a collaborative learning environment led by expert faculty with extensive experience in the aviation ﬁeld. Classwork focuses on aviation mathematics, FAA regulations, and theory, while high-tech lab facilities allow for hands-on training in aircraft engines, systems, components, inspection, and maintenance.

WCC maintains strong relationships with local and regional businesses within the aviation industry. These relationships often include collaborations with aviation companies, maintenance facilities, airports, and other key players in the ﬁeld. By fostering these relationships, the college not only prepares students with theoretical knowledge but also empowers them with practical skills and industry connections, positioning graduates for successful and impactful careers within the aviation sector.

Leading aerospace and aviation companies are building upon North Carolina’s ﬁrst in ﬂight history with major operations in the Carolina Core, a 120 mile corridor stretching from west of Winston-Salem through the Triad and down to Fayetteville. Aerospace employment continues to take off in the Carolina Core, increasing 40% between 2014 and 2019 to more than 15,600 working at aerospace-related companies.

Among the 200-plus aerospace and aviation companies in the Carolina Core is Honda Aircraft Company, which established its Greensboro headquarters in 2006 and operates R&D, manufacturing and customer service facilities that together employ 1,500 associates throughout the region. Other major operations include HAECO Americas, with 600,00 square feet of facilities including a new hangar that is one of the largest in the HAECO family, and Textron Aviation, operating one of only 15 service centers for Cessna business jets worldwide.

TALENT HITS NEW HEIGHTS

Aerospace and aviation companies tap into the Carolina Core’s skilled talent pool to design, engineer and move their next big innovation. “Talent in the Carolina Core has a strong work ethic,” says Michimasa Fujino, former president and CEO of Honda Aircraft Company. The area’s talent pool is rapidly growing and projected to add 1 million people over the next 25 years to its current population of 8 million. Most recently, Boom Supersonic selected Piedmont Triad International Airport as the location for its manufacturing facility for its new supersonic passenger aircraft, planned to begin production in 2025.

Companies have access to more than 30 colleges and universities that enroll 250,000 students, with aviation-related training concentrated at area community colleges. Guilford Technical Community College’s Aviation Campus is one of the most modern and best-equipped aviation maintenance training facilities in the Southeast. At Forsyth Technical Community College, a new $16 million aviation center will accommodate eight airframes and help meet the growing demand for aviation technicians and mechanics, with the ﬁrst class of 25 students beginning in Fall 2020.

SITES READY FOR TAKEOFF

The Carolina Core has several industrial sites ready for aerospace and aviation operations. At the Piedmont Triad International Airport, the PTI Aerospace Megasite’s 1,000 acres include runway access and preliminary approval for development by the EPA. Piedmont Triad International Airport is without question the center of North Carolina Aerospace.

“We are committed to promoting groundbreaking innovation in aerospace and to generating abundant, high-quality jobs for our community,” says Kevin Baker, PTI’s executive director. “Years ago, the Airport Authority envisioned the airport as a key catalyst for regional economic growth. It’s gratifying to see that this foresight is now yielding tangible benefits.”

PTI’s commitment to economic development may be seen as you travel Interstate 73, which bisects the airport, centrally located between Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. There, you’ll see a 174,000 square foot hangar, where Boom Supersonic will soon be building a supersonic passenger jet. Overture, the first production aircraft, is expected to debut later this decade. The company expects to employ 2,400 people at the plant.

Thanks to the vision of present and past airport leadership, sites are being prepared alongside the Interstate for additional companies to locate at PTI. The airport has assembled a 1,000-acre, aerospace “mega-site” to accommodate a new wave of growth. Several of those parcels have been graded, have Interstate and runway access, and are ready for development.

Boom, Marshall Aerospace and Honda Aircraft Company are the most recent examples of companies that have found the airport an attractive place to locate and expand.

Altogether, about 50 companies are located on airport property, including global brands such as FedEx, Cessna/Textron and HAECO North America. Taken together, these 50 companies employ nearly 9,000 people at the airport. A supply-chain network of nearly 200 aerospace companies have located in the Piedmont Triad region near the airport providing even more aerospace jobs.

“It is very rewarding to see a long-term strategy materialize with these recent successes,” says Baker. “And we’re just getting started.”
