Probe sought into MDM ‘health risks’ HE United Broiler Raisers Association (Ubra) may ask the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food to look into their concerns over the temporary reduction of the tariff on imported mechanically deboned meat (MDM) of chicken. Ubra President Elias Jose Inciong told the BusinessMirror that they may seek the help of senators to address their concerns over chicken MDM, including the health risks posed by the product and the possibility that it could be used for technical smuggling. HE will retire from politics but former President and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo vowed on Tuesday to help her home province of Pampanga by focusing on the development of what she envisions as a “megalopolis.” In an interview following the unveiling of the image of Transfiguration of Jesus Christ at the Eternal Gardens Cabuyao City, Arroyo said she wants Pampanga to become a business hub and financial district of Central Luzon. Arroyo also admitted that she was asked by the province to become its consultant. “They asked me to help them from time to time, to be a consultant. So, I’d be happy to do that. Tapos sinabi ko [Then I said] where I think I can help is to follow through on the implementation of [the] Pampanga Megalopolis Plan,” she added. According to Arroyo, the Pam-

panga Megalopolis Plan aims to address congestion in Metro Manila. She said the “vision for Pampanga” is for it to be a “counter-magnet for Metro Manila because it is already so congested.” The plan seeks to address major issues and challenges, as well as optimize the potential of Pampanga as an urban growth center. Arroyo, citing noted architect Jun Palafox, said the Pampanga megalopolis will be composed of various metropolitan areas. The Pampanga megalopolis is clustered into four: ■ The Agropolis (agriculturedriven cluster or center for food: Lubao, Guagua, Santa Rita, Bacolor, San Luis, San Simon, Apalit, Santo Tomas, Santa Ana and Magalang); ■ Aquapolis (water-drive cluster or center for waterfront development: Sasmuan, Macabebe, Minalin, Masantol and Lubao); ■ Aerotropolis (airport-driven cluster or center for business and logistics: Angeles City, San Fernando City, Mabalacat and Mexico); and See “GMA,” A2
