ith the seat of power being virtually moved down south, traffic at the airport in Davao City—the third-busiest international gateway in the Philippines—is expected to rise, an aviation expert said. Avelino L. Zapanta, an expert in the civil-aviation industry, said economic activities in Davao, including commercial-flight services, will rise in the coming months, with President-elect Rodrigo R. Duterte leading the pack of travelers going in and out Davao.

“Davao just might become a beehive of aviation activity because of Duterte,” he told the BusinessMirror in a mobile-phone reply. The President-elect has repeatedly said he will fly in and out of Davao every so often, saying he is not really that comfortable sleeping in Malacañang. Data obtained by the BusinessMirror from the Civil Aeronautics Board showed that the airport handled a total of 2.84 million passengers in 2015, up by 12.69 percent from 2.52 million the year prior.

Duterte ‘magic’ seen to fuel passenger rise at Davao airport

The increase in passenger volume at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport— from 2.52 million in 2014 to 2.84 million last year—making the Davao City airport the third-busiest airport in the Philippines, after the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Why oil prices and power rates keep on rising

HE main impact of power privatization in the Philippines, particularly during President Fidel V. Ramos’s administration, was the continuing increase in the cost of electricity. There were two sources of the increase in electricity rates: (1) The purchased Power Adjustment (PPA), and (2) the application for rate by local distribution utilities.

string of incidents in and over the East China Sea points to renewed tensions between Japan and China over territory, just as a new survey underlines the animosity between Asia’s two largest economies. Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki summoned Chinese Ambassador Cheng Yonghua in the early hours of Thursday, after a Chinese frigate entered the “contiguous zone” just outside Japan-administered waters surrounding contested islands. No Chinese naval vessel has previously been observed there. “This is a one-sided act that increases tensions,” Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told reporters. “I am seriously concerned,” he said, according to Kyodo News. Chen said he could not accept the protest, but would convey it to his government, Kyodo said. The previous day, three Chinese coast guard vessels entered what Japan regards as its territorial waters around the islands. Meanwhile, the US said Chinese fighter planes unsafely intercepted a reconnaissance flight in international airspace over the East China Sea, CNN reported. China’s foreign ministry said the US was deliberately hyping the jet encounter. A contiguous zone is an area of water that extends as far as 24 nautical miles out from territorial seas.
