n what has turned to be the “best show” in recent Miss Universe history enjoyed by “the best fans in the world”, the 65th Miss Universe pageant in Manila is considered a rousing success.

There were several events leading up to “The Most Beautiful Day in the Universe” held at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City on January 30. Fans from near and far followed every movement of the delegates from 86 countries. “What you saw during your brief stay—some of our top destinations, festivals, our balut, Bohol’s Chocolate Hills—these are just a glimpse of what our 7,107 islands can offer. So, I invite the world, come to the Philippines, so you can affirm that when you are with Filipinos, you are with family,” Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon T. Teo said. eventy years ago, Jammu and Kashmir was a princely state, which was asked by the then-outgoing British rulers of the Indian subcontinent to affiliate with either of the newly created Pakistan or India according to the wishes of the people of the state.

Most people of Jammu and Kashmir were Muslims. They wanted to join Pakistan. Its ruling prince was a Hindu. He decided to join In-

to snub popular will. Neighboring tribesmen from Pakistan rushed to help their innocent Kashmiri brethren against coercion of Indian forces. A war ensued, and the Kashmiris were able to liberate a part of their state from the Indian clutches. Fearing loss of the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir to its rightful owners—i.e., the people of Kashmir, India took the matter to the United Nations. The UN resolved that the question of accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India or Pakistan would be decided by the Kashmiri people through a plebiscite to be conducted “as soon as possible” under the auspices of the UN.
