AKLAND, California—Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is auctioning off two special pairs of shoes to raise money for victims of the Oakland warehouse fire. KCBS reported that Curry teamed up with a local artist and had two distinctive pairs designed. As of Wednesday afternoon on eBay, Curry’s shoes had received more than 150 bids

and were at a combined $20,000 on the auction site. Curry wore the pair of white sneakers with the words “Oakland Strong” printed on them during a recent game against the New York Knicks. Warriors officials say he wore the other, more colorful shoes with the words “Ghost Ship” on them, during practice. Both shoes have the initials of all 36 victims printed on them. The fire broke out on December 2 during a dance party at the Ghost Ship warehouse. AP

Cavs adjusting with Smith out for extended period C

LEVELAND—The Cavaliers won’t be at full strength for weeks—maybe longer. Still, Coach Tryonn Lue won’t tolerate any drop-off in the NBA champions. “There are no excuses,” he said on Wednesday night before the Cavs hosted Milwaukee. With starting guard JR Smith sidelined indefinitely with a broken right thumb and Kevin Love missing at least one more game with a bruised knee, Lue will be forced to change his rotations, find some scoring and a defensive stopper. “We’re going to miss JR,” Lue said, “his effort on defense, his tough shot making. But it’s no excuses for us. It’s

LEVELAND—Kyrie Irving didn’t get tired of seeing the Milwaukee Bucks on consecutive days in December. In fact, he wouldn’t mind playing them a few more times in late April, May or June when it really matters. “I hope,” he said. Irving had 31 points and a career-high 13 assists, while LeBron James scored 29 as the Cleveland Cavaliers won their second game in 24 hours over the young Bucks, 113-102, on Wednesday despite being without two starters. The National Basketball Association champions were not at full strength, as Kevin Love didn’t dress for the second straight game with a bruised left knee, and JR Smith sat out after breaking his right thumb on Tuesday at Milwaukee. Smith needs surgery, and the Cavs won’t have a timetable on his return until after the operation. They were barely missed as Cleveland’s two biggest stars more than made up for the absences and the Cavs won for the eighth time in nine games. After his big performance on Wednesday night, Irving was asked if he sees the Bucks as a contender, a team Cleveland could meet in the playoffs. Milwaukee beat the Cavs, 118-101, on November 29. “I hope, man. It would be great, four games against them,” Irving said. “I’m fired up to go against them every time now, for real. Ever since they kicked our [butts] in Milwaukee it’s been personal and it’s going to continue to be personal.” Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 28 points and Jabari Parker 27 for the Bucks, who took the Cavs to overtime at home on Tuesday but fell behind by 21 in the fourth quarter this time and couldn’t come back. “They’re the champs,” Milwaukee Coach Jason Kidd said. “They showed that again tonight. They never panic. They’ve seen everything. For a young team like ourselves, we’re going through that. Hopefully, we can learn from our mistakes.” Tristan Thompson added 15 rebounds for Cleveland. Cavs Coach Tyronn Lue wanted to rest Irving and James, who played a respective 47 and 45 minutes in Tuesday’s overtime win at Milwaukee. “He came to me and asked me how I felt. I said great,” James said. “He gave me a little look and I said, ‘I feel great,’ and uh, that was it.” Like Irving, James sees the Bucks as a team to watch in the future, and a possible challenger to the Cavs in the

East. Maybe not this season, but at some point. “The next several years they could be really, really good,” James said. “For me, I’m ready for whatever matchup. It doesn’t matter if it’s this year, or if it’s several years, I’m going to be ready for it.” Irving scored 14 in the third quarter, capping the period with a three-point play to put Cleveland ahead by 15. James made three threepointers in a span of 1:11 in the second to give Cleveland a 51-35 lead, but Lue, perhaps concerned about overworking his superstar, replaced him with Richard Jefferson. James had an incredulous look as he ran off the floor and seemed to wonder why Lue would pull

him, while on such a shooting tear. “He was mad,” Lue said. “I wished he would’ve changed his mind,” James said. “I had made three straight threes. I don’t know. It’s cool, though. We won.” In New Orleans Russell Westbrook had 42 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oklahoma City, 121-110, over New Orleans. Alex Abrines scored nine of his 18 points during a pivotal 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter. The surge gave the Thunder a 100-87 lead with 9:18 left, and the Pelicans never got within eight after that. Enes Kanter finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Anthony Davis had 34 points and 15 rebounds for New Orleans. Jrue Holiday added 23 points and 10 assists and Terrence Jones scored 21 for the Pelicans. John Wall had 23 points and nine assists as Washington rallied past Chicago, 107-97, for its third road victory of the season. Trey Burke and Marcus Thornton came off the Washington bench to spark a decisive fourthquarter burst. Chicago closed to 97-93 with less than three minutes left, but Bradley Beal, Marcin Gortat and Wall followed with baskets to seal it. Beal finished with 21 points, while Gortat had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Burke scored 10. Jimmy Butler led a balanced Bulls offense with 20 points, while Dwyane Wade added 19 and Rajon Rondo had 10 assists.

next man up and we’ve got to be ready to play. We’ve got to do it by committee. I think our guys are ready to step up to the challenge.” Smith got hurt late in the second quarter on Tuesday night against the Bucks and didn’t return after halftime as the Cavs won, 114-108, in overtime. X-rays taken after the game in Milwaukee were inconclusive, but further tests in Cleveland revealed the fracture. The Cavs aren’t putting a timeline or know how long Smith will be sidelined. Typically, injuries like Smith’s require at least one month of recovery time, but the severity of the break is not known and his return date won’t be determined until after the operation. Smith’s surgery has not been scheduled, Lue said. Smith’s injury is the latest and most serious medical setback for the Cavs, who are 20-6 going into Wednesday’s home game against the Bucks. Love, who is having an All-Star season, missed Tuesday’s game and is not expected back until Friday, when the Cavs host Brooklyn. Reserve center Chris “Birdman” Andersen suffered a season-ending knee injury last week in practice. With Smith out, Lue will have to balance not overworking stars LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. James played 47 minutes and Irving 45 on Tuesday, but Lue said both would play in the second game of the back-to-back. The Cavs plan to trim James’s minutes in January and February, but for now the 31-year-old is not asking to sit out. He’s averaging 37.3 minutes per game, but Lue isn’t worried the Cavs are overworking the superstar. “He knows his body better than anyone,” Lue said. “He’s been doing this for a long time and he said he feels great and on nights he doesn’t feel great, he won’t play. He wants around 38 or 39 minutes a night and then he said in January or February we’ll tailor him down. As of right now, that’s the plan.” Cleveland has some current roster issues with Andersen and Mo Williams (knee surgery) taking up two spots. Cavs General Manager David Griffin has been in the market to find a backup point guard—Iman Shumpert and James have been getting some of those minutes— and could now be forced to find another wing player. Lue, though, said Griffin remains focused on a backcourt addition. “We’re a good team, still,” Lue said. “We’re 20-6. So no excuses. Until we get a chance to get something done and I know Griff will, he always does, he always comes through so. I told Griff to take his time. We are 20-6 and we don’t want to just settle for any point guard. We want to make sure we have the right piece that can help us win a championship. With Griff at the helm, I know he’ll get something done. He always pulls out something magical.” Smith has become a huge fan favorite in Cleveland. He had a major role in the Cavs beating Golden State in last season’s NBA Finals, dropping two big threepointers in Game Seven, and then became something of a cult figure when he showed up shirtless to the team’s celebratory downtown parade. He held out of training camp for a new contract and the Cavs eventually signed him to a four-year, $57-million deal. Smith has had a bumpy start this season, missing five games with an ankle problem and hyperextended knee. He’s averaging 8.6 points, but has been slowly emerging from a shooting slump. AP

he National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) said it would be able to complete and submit a new economic blueprint to the President by the end of January 2017. Documents obtained from the Neda showed the 20172022 Philippine Development Plan (PDP) will also be submitted to the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (Ledac) next year. “The PDP is employing strategies based on the three main pillars of the long-term vision. These are malasakit, or solidarity, and enhancing the social fabric; pagbabago, or real transformation, that reduces inequality; and kaunlaran, or increasing potential growth, and sustaining it,” Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia earlier said. Documents indicated that the PDP of the Duterte administration will be divided according to six thematic parts and 22 chapters. Continued on A2

Japan OKs record defense spending amid China tensions

apan’s Cabinet approved a record defense budget of just over ¥5 trillion ($42.5 billion) for the year starting April, as tensions with China simmer over disputed islands in the East China Sea. The figure marks the fifth straight rise in annual military spending—a trend that started after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office in late-2012. Separately, an extra spending package approved for the current financial year included ¥171 million for defense, with the focus on ballistic missile defense as fears grow over North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said last month that, while the government didn’t have a concrete plan to introduce a US missile-defense shield, it was considering the option. Deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system in the country could hurt ties with Russia and China, which

have both opposed its planned introduction in South Korea. Here are the main points of the two spending packages, which must be now passed by parliament: ■ Defense budget for year starting April rises 1.4 percent to ¥5.1 trillion. ■ New submarine model with improved sensor capability to be developed at a cost of ¥72.8 billion; Japan to expand its fleet to 22 submarines from 16. ■ Japan to budget for a further six Lockheed-Martin F-35 fighter aircraft at a cost of ¥88 billion; F-35 squadron to be established at Misawa, northern Japan. ■ ¥14.7-billion budgeted for procurement of new ship-based ballistic-missile interceptors, known as SM-3 Block II A. ■ Defense allocation in third extra budget for current fiscal year to be ¥171 billion, of which ¥33 billion will be spent on
