Burned Southeast Asia craves Trump love after trade rebuff

ONALD TRUMP is more popular in Southeast Asia than almost anywhere else. After years of being chided by Barack Obama over human rights, some of the region’s states can rest a bit easier. Trump has signaled he’s less interested as US president in putting such matters on the table, and in tying them to trade and investment benefits.

But the welcome mat for Trump as he visits Vietnam and then Manila for a series of global summits masks a deep concern in Southeast Asia as to whether the US under Trump will maintain its presence in the region. Far smaller than the world’s two biggest econo-

mies, some Southeast Asian states have long leaned on Washington to provide a buffer against an expansionist China even while expanding economic ties with Beijing. At the same time, leaders have expressed concern that Trump may upend the delicate security balances that
