LAG carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to ink a $1.8-billion agreement for the purchase of nearly half-a-dozen A350-900 on Tuesday or Wednesday, in time for the opening of the Singapore Airshow on February 16. “Ranking officials of PAL and Airbus are now in Singapore to sign the deal,” according to a highly reliable source, who asked not to be named as the deal is still being kept under wraps. The source said an official announcement would soon follow after the signing of the agreement.

The source confirmed to the BM the news that appeared on the Internet, quoting an unnamed source, as true. “That is true,” the source said, “but PAL will officially make the announcement following the signing at the Singapore Airshow either on Tuesday or Wednesday.” The value of the deal is reported to be around $1.8 billion. PAL and its subsidiary PALExpress are increasing their fleet of about 60 Airbus jets, six Boeing aircraft and around nine Bombardier airplanes. The legacy carrier flies to 41 destinations and is reported to be acquiring more aircraft, as it grows its

lucrative international network to cater to increased demand from the 10 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Some 2 million OFWs are in the Middle East, and this market is also shared by the region’s airlines— Emirates, Saudia, Qatar, Etihad and Kuwait Airlines. PAL has opened eight new routes last year, with the maiden flight to New York in March 2015, followed by Jinjiang, Cairns, Auckland, Papua New Guinea, Kuwait and Jeddah. A ninth destination would be opened on March 15, with the maiden flight out of Cebu to Los Angeles.

Conclusion

ONSIDERING the projects that are currently being implemented, those that have been awarded, projects that are being prepared for bidding and others being lined up for rollout, we should have enough publicprivate partnership (PPP) projects for the next six years.

These are in addition to the regular infrastructure projects that are undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways, and other agencies under the annual budgets. However, the private sector is understandably feeling some apprehension on what the next administration will do with the PPP Program. C  A
