And, I think, the same is true with me.”—Donald Trump to The Associated Press, as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is planning a general election campaign that banks heavily on his personal appeal and trademark rallies. BSP needs to act as anchor during transition period

ENTRAL Bank Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. has emerged as a pillar of stability for investors grappling with a brash incoming president who has little economic-policy experience. A veteran of 11 years as chief of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Tetangco, 63, has brought inflation down to the lowest in two TETANGCO decades, boosted foreign reserves more than fourfold, and navigated the economy through the 2008 global financial crisis without it falling into recession. With his term coming to an end in July 2017, Tetangco’s challenge now is sustaining those successes through uncertain times. Rodrigo R. Duterte, a toughtalking mayor who is only just beginning to give more clarity on his economic plans, won the May 9 presidential election, heightening risks in the Southeast Asian economy. Investor concern ahead of the vote prompted the currency to fall and stocks to slide. “During this transition period with a lot of uncertainty over possible policy changes, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas acts like an anchor for investors,” said Frederic Neumann, cohead of Asian economics research at HSBC Holdings Plc. in Hong Kong. “Tetangco certainly has tremendous credibility. He has a very impressive track record, steering the economy through uncertainties with a steady hand.” C A

AVAO CITY—President-elect Rodrigo R. Duterte has formed a group to review the policies implemented by the Aquino administration, and to adopt viable programs that are beneficial to the country to ensure continuity of good governance. “Sometimes, the problem with government is the lack of continuity. administrations tend to cut or stop all the programs of the previous administration. But you have heard the mayor saying, ‘I will be copying good policies,’” said Peter Laviña, the spokesman for the Duterte campaign team. He said the Duterte team would “take advantage of the vast experience of certain individuals” who have been working with the current or previous administrations. For instance, the selection and advisory subcommittee formed recently
intends to tap the experience and expertise of Duterte’s vice-presidential bet, Sen. Alan Peter S. Cayetano, and his sister, Rep.-elect Pia S. Cayetano. Laviña, however, said existing national government programs that did not work would be discarded. He said they are preparing to work with a transition team created by President Aquino, adding that Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr. “has been S “D,” A
EGAWORLD Corp., the property-development firm of businessman Andrew L. Tan, said its income grew 12 percent to P2.63 billion, from P2.35 billion last year, as revenues rose to an all-time high. The company said its rental business boosted its income for the period as revenues soared to P2.3 billion, 15 percent higher than last year’s P1.97 billion. “We have sustained the expansion plans for our office and mall businesses, which bolstered our rental revenues. In the next five years, we see our rental businesses become the key driver of our growth, as we expect a continuing momentum in consumer spending and a remarkable growth in BPO [business-process outsourcing] revenues,” the company said. Megaworld said its rental revenues will hit the P11-billion mark by the end of the year, up from about P9.16 billion last year. Consolidated revenues of Megaworld, which includes all of its units, rose to P11.46 billion for the first three months of the year, an increase of 9 percent from the P10.47 billion made in the same period last year. Residential sales, meanwhile, continued to grow in the first three months of the year, reaching P6.86 billion, up by 10 percent from P6.24 billion in the same period last year. “We continue to innovate our residential offerings that adapt to the diverse characteristics of each township that we build. That is why we are able to sustain the growth in our residential business,” the company said. “Megaworld has laid out its groundwork of growth by making sound decisions and thorough planning of the vast land bank that we have. This year we will continue to strengthen, if not expand, our township footprint, where we can build more residential, office and mall developments. Our healthy first-quarter result is indicative of another positive outlook for 2016,” it added. VG Cabuag
