Parlour Burgers Tuesdays

Alan Van Heerden

Executive Chef, The Parlour Steakhouse

A team’s not a group of people working together. It’s a group of people that trusts each other to work as a team. - Alan Van Heerden

ALAN VAN HEERDEN has worked in kitchens in the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Saudi Arabia―but there’s no place like Stratford for the South African native. This fall, Alan signed on as Executive Chef at the Parlour Steakhouse. And running the popular Stratford eatery is an opportunity he’s really looking forward to. Using his wealth of experience with different international cuisines like French, Indian and Thai foods, Alan will be creating menus that offer a little something special for every palate. He’ll also be working closely with Stratford area farmers so that he can bring more fresh local produce to the table at The Parlour Steakhouse. Alan began his career at the age of 19 working as a modest dishwasher but was quickly attracted to the varied life of a chef. “I discovered that it’s almost impossible to master all dishes,” he says. “It would take a lifetime. With cooking, you’re always in a state of non-stop learning.” Throughout his career, Alan has gone from country to country and experienced a little bit of everything―from working on cruise ships to serving kings and queens. But he particularly loves being around talented individuals―like his brand new staff at the Parlour Steakhouse. “A team’s not a group of people working together,” Alan says of the kitchen life. “It’s a group of people that trusts each other to work as a team.”

ant to take a little time out for yourself―and recharge your batteries? All it takes is a trip to Relish Day Spa―a serene full-service spa located on 397 Ontario Street in Stratford. Operating out of a restored century-old home with lavish woodwork and breathtaking stained glass windows, Relish Day Spa offers a full range of in-house spa services. That includes manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, laser hair removal and relaxation massage. There are affordable spa packages available for men, women and couples. In terms of quality, Relish Day Spa also takes pride in carrying a broad range of exclusive natural and organic products including Shir-Organics, Zoya Nail Polish and Nubar Infinity Soak-Off Gel―a gel overlay that’s used to strengthen nails and provide chip free nail polish. Elizabeth Gordon-Edmonds, the owner of Relish Day Spa, says her clients love their quiet, out-of-the-way location. But they love the chance to look and feel their best even more. “We want people to feel good about themselves,” she explains, “and at our spa, we make sure they walk out our door feeling refreshed and invigorated.”

But Relish Day Spa isn’t restricted to one location. If you’re planning a wedding, reception or shower, Elizabeth and her mobile services team can travel to any location―from Waterloo to London―and help you get ready for the big event. Relish Day Spa can even bring a “spa party” right to your home or guest room. Their manicures and pedicure packages are perfect for any occasion, whether you want to liven up your next bachelorette party, birthday or bridal shower―or just have an extra special get-together with friends. Elizabeth has many years of expertise in the esthetic field. A CIDESCO certified esthetician and graduate of the Dominelli International College of Esthetics, she spent two years working at a spa in Vancouver before moving to Stratford in 2010 to launch Relish Day Spa. Now, six years later, Elizabeth continues to expand her business, adding estheticians Nuvia Rodriguez and Michelle Boeringa and attracting a loyal clientele in the community. When it comes to her spa’s popularity, Elizabeth says it’s all about people wanting to care for and indulge themselves. “It’s important to take the time to enjoy a little luxury once in a while,” she says. “It can refresh your mind and boost your energy.”
