The main differences are in the Rules as well as in the Objectives of the two sports, with different safety standards and records. Because of this distinction, unlike in other sports, athletes as well as referees and judges of professional boxing are not permitted to participate in amateur and Olympic boxing events. The following are a few examples of the differences between amateur and professional boxing. It is recognized that while the rules for amateur boxing are the same all over the world, rules for professional boxing can vary significantly, and in a few countries or states may have now equalled or even exceeded safety standards of amateur boxing in some instances.

Boxing Canada is the national governing body for the sport of boxing in Canada recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee. The goal of Boxing Canada is to promote, organize and coordinate the sport of Boxing for the advancement of the sport and its members of all levels and ages.

Amateur athletes compete out of the love of the sport and pride for their province and country. They are not paid to compete, just as amateur swimmers, badminton players and basketball players are not paid to compete.

There is a vast difference between amateur boxing and professional boxing.

Our vision is to inspire Canadians in making olympic boxing a major sport and physical activity and strive towards making Canada a dominant nation internationally.

The pathway to excellence is not given by chance. The athlete must earn that right through a commitment to the training and competitive programs and demonstrated ability to be competitive at the international level as determined by Boxing Canada. Training camps and scheduled competitions are a necessary part of the preparation program.

As a result of their victory at the Olympic Qualifier in Montreal, boxers have locked in their place on the National Olympic Team. They will now proceed to the next phase of the Olympic qualification process and represent Canada internationally. Boxing Canada is proud to introduce its team!

F IG HT FOR YOUTH NI AG ARA This boxing event was founded by Spider Jones in 2012 in Toronto to benefit his youth charity Believe To Achieve. Spiders’ Believe To Achieve strives to help at-risk youth and caught the eyes of Robert and Chiara Megna owners of BayShore Groups, who had the same charitable calling. BayShore Groups became the main sponsor of Spiders’ Fight For Youth event and watched as the event and organization brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars helping at-risk youth through providing training, meals and education.

After several years of working together it was time to bring the Fight For Youth event to Niagara and help youth in need to succeed in the Niagara region.

Spider Jones and BayShore groups teamed up with Canadian boxing legend Billy “The Kid” Irwin and the team was complete! Billy has reached out to his American boxing contacts and is preparing 9 amateur bouts and one special bout, that will showcase Canada vs U.S.A. in the largest boxing event Niagara and maybe Canada have ever seen!

tyson Michael Gerard “Mike” Tyson is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 2005. He reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion and holds the record as the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title at 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old. Tyson retried with the record of 50 wins, 6 losses and 2 no contests.

Tyson now partakes in multiple fundraising events and organizations to enhance the lives of youth. He also operates a care foundation called “Mike Tyson Cares Foundation” their mission is to give kids a fighting chance by creating innovative centers that provide the comprehensive needs of kids from broken homes. These needs include healthcare assistance, shelter, school assistance, mentoring, job placement assistance and such other needs determined by the center for the overall well-being of the child.

jones Charles “Spider” Jones is a Canadian former amateur boxer born and raised in Windsor, Ontario. He is a former three-time Golden Glove Champion and was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996. Jones was once voted “Boxing Commentator and M.C. of the Year” by the Board of Governors of the World Boxing Federation.

Jones is now an avid community activist and spends his life as a positive role model for both youth and adults alike. He is the founder of Believe to Achieve Organization which is a registered non-profit that assists kids, ages 8-16, in after-school personal development and mentorship programs. The after-school drop in centre at Jane and Finch provides food programs, study groups for homework help, computer rooms, teaching guides and motivation and support with caring adults. Believe to Achieves goal is to enhance and replicate their successful program across other areas where children are “at risk”.

William “Billy” ‘The Kid’ Irwin born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, a retired Canadian amateur lightweight and professionallight/light welter/welterweight boxer of the 1990s and 2000s. Irwins professional fighting weight varied from 133 1⁄2 lb (60.6 kg; 9 st 7.5 lb), i.e. lightweight to 142 lb (64.4 kg; 10 st 2.0 lb), i.e. welterweight. Irwin over the years claimed the following titles:

2-TIME CANADIAN CHAMPION OTHORBOX (PUNCH) IBO WORLD CHAMPION WBC CONTENETIAL OF AMERICAS CHAMPION COMMON WEALTH CHAMPION 1ST IN THE WORLD 2 YEARS RUNNING (1999-2000) He retired from boxing after losing to Juan Diaz in 2005, his second unsuccessful world title challenge.

His final record was 45 wins and 5 loses.

He now trains amateurs upcoming international fighters and professional boxers at Irwin BayShore Boxing Fight Club out of two locations in Niagara Falls, Ontario and St. Catharines, Ontario. Which won the 2012 Canadian Champion best youth boxer award as his love and commitment for the sport shows with the results from his upcoming fighters both provincially and nationally.

Over twenty years ago the RAFT began offering services to youth through its drop-in centre.

A small group of concerned people decided that they would make a difference in the lives of a few young people. They determined that young people shouldn’t have to live outside either physically or emotionally.

Since setting out on our mission to prevent youth homelessness we have seen a number of successes. What began as a pilot project in Fort Erie, now services the entire Region of Niagara.

Our shelter use is decreasing yearly, down over 40% since 2008, which means hundreds of young people never became homeless.

Some years later another small group of people decided that more than a drop-in was required to make a difference and they set out and were ultimately successful in opening Niagara’s first youth specific shelter. The path was not easy and at times failure seemed a certainty. However, even when the lights went out this groups’ passion could not be extinguished.

Keeping youth engaged in school and their community just makes sense. Every school, sport, and community agency in Niagara can be a virtual door to ending youth homelessness and every teacher, coach and community member is an outreach worker. Ending youth homelessness will not happen without the alignment of our missions to educate and strengthen our youth.

Many years later, another group of people, not so small this time, determined that young people shouldn’t have to become homeless in the first place.

This group set out to prevent youth homelessness and ultimately end youth homelessness.

Our inspiration is our history; our passion is our present, and our faith is our future.

Help us end youth homelessness by stopping it from ever happening.

Right here in Niagara, there are hundreds of kids who feel lost, alone, and terrified to express themselves. The roadblocks they face are overwhelming, and their self-worth is buried along with their sense of purpose.

They’re bullied at school and alienated at home.

They’re pressured into using drugs and alcohol, and because of this, they believe they have no hope.

We believe that hope exists in creativity, and we are dedicated to fostering a culture in which kids are educated to help each other build a strong foundation of hope and motivate each other to dream about a future in which they can become the heroes of their own stories, or perhaps someone else’s.

Jarico Kids is a not-for-profit film production and education company that produces award-winning feature and short films that are meant to entertain, inspire and educate.

We run workshops for youth in need, that teach the benefits of storytelling through film. Classes include such disciplines as camera & lighting, screenwriting, acting, fight/stunt choreography, producing, set design, and art direction with a focus on promoting teamwork, leadership skills and confidence building.

We hope to motivate youth in need to pursue their dreams, fight for what they love and break down those roadblocks of life. What doesn’t kill you, makes you a hero.

The St. Catharines Shrine Club, is part of the Shrine of North America. The Shrine, that is known for its colorful parades, circuses and clowns. However there is also a serious side to this international fraternity of approximately 500,000 men belonging to 191 Shrine Temples, or chapters, throughout North America.

For 75 years, the Shrine has operated a network of specialized hospitals that treat children with orthopaedic problems, burns and spinal cord injuries, up to their 18th birthday, free of charge.

The Shrine was founded in 1872 by a group of 13 men belonging to the Masonic Order. It was originally established to provide fun and fellowship for its members. But as the organization grew, its members decided to dedicate their efforts to helping others by establishing an official Shrine philanthropy a network of specialized hospitals that have provided expert medical care to more than 700,000 children, free of charge.

The Shrine and its 22 hospitals, while maintaining separate legal and financial identities, are linked through the Shrine’s continuing support of Shriners Hospitals. Canada’s own located in Montreal, Quebec The best known symbol of Shrinedom is the distinctive red fez that Shriners wear at official functions. Because Shriners are men who enjoy life, fun is a large part of the Shrine and the activities that help support the Shrine’s philanthropy. Most Shrine Temples sponsor Shrine Clubs and special units, such as the motor corps, band or clown units and many other units of interest. They share in the camaraderie, deep friendships and good fellowship that are all part of being a Shriner.

Crime Stoppers of Niagara is a not for profit organization with the purpose of preventing and reducing crime, by forming a partnership among the community, law enforcement and the media to offer anonymity and cash rewards to anyone providing information leading to an arrest, making the community a safer place for all who live or work in the region. Crime Stoppers of Niagara have many programs to engage the community with a focus on youth during this program we talk to the youth about bullying, crimes and prevention.

Safe School 101

■ For elementary students, presentations are video based and cover topics related to personal safety and anti-victimization. Important child safety tips are shared with parents.

Crime Stoppers of Niagara Safe School Program has been keeping schools safe since 2000 by providing students with a safe and anonymous way to report crime and potential dangers on their school, school yard and in their community. In addition to our TipLine, safety presentations are offered to students with an underlining message of good citizenship and keeping themselves safe, parents are presented with tools and tips for keeping their child safe and training is available to school staff and school-based law enforcement officers to assist in keeping students and schools safe. The Safe School Program has educated over thousands of students from K-12th grade and college/university students in Niagara Region school districts, including private schools.

In 2016 alone, outreach through the Safe School Program reached over 1,000 students, and directly resulted in many solved cases including the removal of illegal drugs, and weapons.
