2023-2024 KATIE SCHOOL I-RAD INSURANCE AND RISK ACUMEN DEVELOPEMENT
The purpose of the I-RAD Insurance and Risk Acumen Development badge program is to provide students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills and knowledge sought after by industry employers, which they may not be able to attain from a traditional classroom experience. By demonstrating skills and knowledge in three categories, students who complete the badge program should be well suited to enter and excel in the insurance industry. The three areas of focus are non-course technical skills, industry understanding and soft skills. There were 120 students participating in the I-RAD program this year, and 5 students received their badge.

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE & LAW and
THE KATIE SCHOOL OF INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT
•
THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE, AND LAW at Illinois State University offers majors in both Finance and Risk Management and Insurance, plus minors in Financial Planning and in Risk Management and Insurance. These programs are intended to help prepare students for careers in financial services and to develop skills in critical thinking, written and oral communication, professionalism, and ethical decision-making. The curricula of the department maintain its relevancy with the advice of industry professionals that sit on the Finance, Insurance and Law Advisory Board.
THE FINANCE MAJOR prepares students for careers in corporate finance, investment management, financial institutions, or real estate. The curriculum guides students toward several professional designations, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP). A distinctive feature of the finance curriculum is the opportunity to link theory with financial practice. The Educational Investment Fund (EIF), a student-managed equity portfolio with a market value of about $1,100,000, allows students to earn academic credit while making actual investment decisions with feedback from industry professionals on the Educational Investment Fund Board of Directors. A recent addition to the curriculum is student-managed bond portfolio, called the Educational Fixed-Income Fund (EFIF), which currently has a market value of about $1,200,000. Finance students also interact with industry through the Illinois State Students in Finance (ISSF) student organization and the Institute for Financial Planning and Analysis. Additionally, students participate in internship experiences, both locally and in major metropolitan areas.
THE RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE (RMI) MAJOR prepares students for careers in the insurance industry and in the field of risk management. The Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management was established in 1991 to help students in insurance interact with industry professionals through research projects, industry conferences, mentorships, Katie School alumni events, and visits to board member companies. The Katie School International Internship Program allows students to intern internationally in insurance markets including London, Bermuda, Zurich and Johannesburg with internship opportunities in many domestic locations as well. The student organization Gamma Iota Sigma provides a professional and social environment for students with community service events, engaged speakers, etiquette dinners, soft skill workshops, mock interviews and other enhancements. Other opportunities for students include Toastmasters to develop public speaking capabilities, the Katie School Certification in Leadership and Business Acumen Program to enrich skills and knowledge sought by industry, and the Ambassador program which sends RMI majors into high school classes to highlight careers and opportunities in the insurance industry. Additional high school outreach programs include the Midwest High School Scholars Analytics Academy, and the Redbird Risk Management Challenge.
THE KATIE SCHOOL also offers a wide array of programs to industry including the Insurance Executive Forum, the Lloyd’s of London Conducting Business in the U.S. Program, the Katie School Hall of Fame, the Katie School Innovation and Leadership Awards, the Katie School Symposium, the Katie School Golf Classic, and the Katie School Financial Regulators Program.
The Department of Finance, Insurance, and Law thanks the following faculty members and staff that assisted in organizing this year’s awards.

Community involvement has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional development. One significant undertaking has been my participation with Make-A-Wish Illinois, an organization that I am deeply passionate about. Collaborating primarily through Chi Omega sorority, we organize various networking events with Wish Kids and their families, alongside hosting numerous fundraisers. Contributing to this philanthropy and community service has been a source of pride throughout my time at Illinois State University. Additionally, I actively engage in philanthropy through Women In Business, where we support Breast Cancer awareness. Our efforts involve organizing multiple food fundraisers throughout the academic year, as well as coordinating larger events such as dodgeball and bag tournaments, which take place at the end of each semester. These events draw participation from the broader community, strengthening our impact in raising awareness and funds. Lastly, my involvement with the YMCA and its Y Pals program has been enriching. Last academic year, I worked part-time with the organization, providing after-school care for children until their parents picked them up. This experience facilitated meaningful connections with both the children and their families within the local community. Currently, I continue to contribute as a substitute daycare worker, maintaining my connection and commitment to community engagement.

I am a proud member of Chi Omega Sorority, a women’s organization that strives for academic excellence, career and personal development, community service, and friendship. Throughout my time in Chi Omega, the organization’s dedication to these purposes has begun to show through. During the last executive board term, I had the privilege of serving as Treasurer. I was honored to have been chosen by my chapter to lead them in this role. As my term as treasurer came to an end, I applied for another leading role in Chi Omega. I have recently been named Campus Activities Director for my chapter. I am also an active member of Women In Business, a registered student organization here at Illinois State University. Committed to supporting its members’ success, the organization provides unique opportunities to advance members’ professional and personal development. Lastly, I am an active member of Gamma Iota Sigma, an international business fraternity for students majoring in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science. My involvement with this organization began in Spring 2024, and since then, I have enjoyed attending monthly meetings and workshops. These meetings have been invaluable as they have allowed me to learn about other’s experiences with the insurance industry, offering insights that deepen my understanding of Risk Management and Insurance and its profound impact on individuals and communities.

I am a member of the Illinois State University students in Finance where I have been attending weekly professional events and learning more about the business world. I speak three languages: French, Arabic and English and I can use python as a programming language to analyze data. Last year I participated in the Selective Insurance Case competition and succeeded in securing the third place Nationwide. This semester, I participated in the same competition again, where my teammates and I built an insurance company from scratch and secured first place.
Career Goals
During college, I’m working to grow professionally by expanding my network. Joining Gamma Iota Sigma has provided me with valuable skills, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn new things every day. Maintaining a 3.9 GPA and being involved on campus are crucial to me. I’m actively seeking internships to gain more knowledge about the insurance industry and achieve my ambitious goals. In the next five years, my aim is to graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors, not only to make my parents proud but also to be an example for future Gamma Iota Sigma members. My dream job is to become a Data Analyst at State Farm, where I can use my skills to analyze raw data, organize information, identify patterns, make correlations, and draw conclusions. I appreciate all the support I’ve received, and I look forward to giving back to those who have played a role in my growth.

Internships in Insurance, other Relevant work Experience/Industry Involvement
I worked for Zurich North America in their Schaumburg Headquarters as a finance intern on the Credit Risk Management team for the 2022 and 2023 summers and the Fall 2023 semester. I have been a Student Worker for ISU’s Vice President of Finance and Planning since my freshman year. Through my involvement with the Katie School and Gamma Iota Sigma, I have had many opportunities to attend conferences for various organizations in the insurance industry which has not only prepared me for interviews and networking, but also guided me toward the line of business I will be working in after graduation. Not only did my time spent at conferences prepare me with a base line of knowledge on some of the more niche areas of the industry, it also allowed me to find where my personality best aligns with others, which in turn gave me the confidence when choosing where to accept for full-time employment. I will be forever grateful for the gracious opportunities extended to me and hope to repay the favor to future students as alumni have done for me.
Insurance Licensing, Professional Designations, Exam Parts Completed or Passed
I have received the overrides for the CPCU 520 and CPCU 551 courses since I passed the corresponding FIL classes. I am currently enrolled in the CPCU 540 course and will be taking the exam this Spring semester.
Community Involvement During College
As a member of Chi Omega, I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering and fundraising for Make- A-Wish Illinois throughout my time in college. The opportunities I have had through Chi Omega’s participation with the Make-A-Wish organization has allowed me to meet and get to know wish kids from the BloomingtonNormal area, showing me first-hand the immense impact our efforts make in their lives.
Other Campus Involvement and Personal Accomplishments
As a member of Gamma Iota Sigma, I have participated in many different events both as a normal member as well as a member of the executive board. Now I sit as the Director of Publicity/Historian where I have been challenged in many ways as I never thought of myself as the most artistic person, however, I have grown immensely in my abilities to use digital marketing tools and have found a new outlet for my creativity. Not only has Gamma Iota Sigma opened many doors for me, it has also contributed to my personal and professional development greatly, a favor I hope to return as an alumni.
Career Goals
One of the first is to earn my CPCU, a goal of which I have already made progress towards and hope to have completed within my first couple of years in the industry. From there, I will be able to focus on other things like my involvement in different professional organizations where I will hopefully earn a spot on the executive board. I enjoy leading others and while I know it will probably be a while in my career before I have people reporting to me, I see the professional organizations as a great way for me to enhance and refine my leadership abilities.
