The purpose of the Katie School Certificate in Leadership and Business Acumen (CLBA) is to provide students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills and knowledge sought after by industry employers, which they may not be able to attain from a traditional classroom experience. By demonstrating skills and knowledge in three categories, students who complete the certification should be well suited to enter and excel in the insurance industry. The three areas of focus are non-course technical skills, industry understanding and soft skills. There were 145 students participating in the CLBA program this year, and 15 students received their certification.

THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE, AND LAW at Illinois State University offers majors in both Finance and Risk Management and Insurance, plus minors in Financial Planning and in Risk Management and Insurance. These programs are intended to help prepare students for careers in financial services and to develop skills in critical thinking, written and oral communication, professionalism, and ethical decision-making. The curricula of the department maintain its relevancy with the advice of industry professionals that sit on the Finance, Insurance and Law Advisory Board.
THE FINANCE MAJOR prepares students for careers in corporate finance, investment management, financial institutions, or real estate. The curriculum guides students toward several professional designations, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP). A distinctive feature of the finance curriculum is the opportunity to link theory with financial practice. The Educational Investment Fund (EIF), a student-managed equity portfolio with a market value of about $900,000, allows students to earn academic credit while making actual investment decisions with feedback from industry professionals on the Educational Investment Fund Board of Directors. A recent addition to the curriculum is student-managed bond portfolio, called the Educational Fixed-Income Fund (EFIF), which currently has a market value of about $1,000,000. Finance students also interact with industry through the Illinois State Students in Finance (ISSF) student organization and the Institute for Financial Planning and Analysis. Additionally, students participate in internship experiences, both locally and in major metropolitan areas.
THE RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE (RMI) MAJOR prepares students for careers in the insurance industry and in the field of risk management. The Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management was established in 1991 to help students in insurance interact with industry professionals through research projects, industry conferences, mentorships, Katie School alumni events, and visits to board member companies. The Katie School International Internship Program allows students to intern internationally in insurance markets including London, Bermuda, Zurich and Johannesburg with internship opportunities in many domestic locations as well. The student organization Gamma Iota Sigma provides a professional and social environment for students with community service events, engaged speakers, etiquette dinners, soft skill workshops, mock interviews and other enhancements. Other opportunities for students include Toastmasters to develop public speaking capabilities, the Katie School Certification in Leadership and Business Acumen Program to enrich skills and knowledge sought by industry, and the Ambassador program which sends RMI majors into high school classes to highlight careers and opportunities in the insurance industry. Additional high school outreach programs include the Midwest High School Scholars Analytics Academy, and the Redbird Risk Management Challenge.
THE KATIE SCHOOL also offers a wide array of programs to industry including the Insurance Executive Forum, the Lloyd’s of London Conducting Business in the U.S. Program, the Katie School Hall of Fame, the Katie School Innovation and Leadership Awards, the Katie School Symposium, the Katie School Golf Classic, and the Katie School Financial Regulators Program
The Department of Finance, Insurance, and Law thanks the following faculty members and staff that assisted in organizing this year’s awards.

During my junior year, I held a position as the Director of Treasury for Women in Business. I have also served as a mentor to multiple students throughout my time in Women in Business.
Last summer, I completed an internship at Stifel Financial Corporation where I shadowed a professional financial advisor daily to grow an understanding of the cadence of the wealth management profession. I managed an array of responsibilities, completing anything from stock research to drafting financial plans for clients.
After graduation, I will be joining my father’s team at Stifel Financial Corporation as a Client Service Associate. In my first few years after graduation, I plan to get my Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation, as well as multiple licenses, including my Series 7 and Series 63. Following this, I plan on returning to school to obtain my Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in finance.

I am a proud honors student, a Redbird Scholar and was on the Dean’s list for my past four semesters. I was inducted into the international business honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma, in spring of 2021. I was also awarded the Mark and Linda Hauptman Endowed Scholarship recipient last spring.
Over these past few years at ISU, I have had the opportunity to serve as the philanthropy chair and treasurer for Student Accounting Society. Additionally, I was the treasurer for the professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi and was on the DEI committee to help further educate our chapter. I also am currently serving as the Vice President of Finance for AKPsi.
I have had the wonderful experience of being able to volunteer and present for the Fall 2021 Special Olympics Illinois Leadership Academy, speaking on how to use presentation tools and social media effectively. I also help serve the local McLean county community with my AKPsi chapter, by volunteering at the Midwest Food bank and monthly Adopt-a-streets!
In addition to the RSOs on campus I have been involved in, I am in the Honors program
My future plans involve sitting for both the CPA and CFP exam upon graduation next Fall. I hope to start taking a couple parts of the CPA exam this summer! My interest is to work for an international CPA firm in their wealth advisory practice which would allow me to best utilize my CPA and CFP certification.

I assist Eureka High School as a volunteer cross country coach during the Fall.
In May 2021 I was awarded the Certificate of Service for my work as an assistant cross country coach for Eureka High School. Honestly, I don’t have many personal accomplishments, especially from ISU. I’m just a hard-working community banker that has a stand-up reputation within the community. On top of working 30 hours a week for Goodfield State Bank, I also attend ISU as a full time student.
I currently work at Goodfield State Bank, and will continue to work in the banking industry following graduation. I am currently waiting for a response from the Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC) on a financial internship which could potentially lead into a bank examiner position (the last sentence does not necessarily need to be mentioned, but I’ve added I just in case).

I represented Illinois State University in the Selective Insurance Case competition. After, 4 weeks of competing with 7 different colleges, Redbird Agency succeeded to maintain third place.
Throughout my time in college, I have been actively involved in extracurricular activities that have allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Specifically, I have been a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Gamma Iota Sigma, two organizations that have been integral to my college experience. Beta Gamma Sigma is a business honors society that only admits the top 10% of students in the business college. Being a member of Beta Gamma Sigma has also given me access to exclusive networking opportunities. I have had the privilege of meeting with alumni who have achieved success in their careers and have been able to learn from their experiences. I have also been able to attend career fairs and workshops where I have met with recruiters and professionals from top companies in the industry. In addition to Beta Gamma Sigma, I am also a member of Gamma Iota Sigma, an insurance fraternity. As a member of this organization, I have been able to connect with other students who share my interest in the insurance industry. Through attending meetings and events, I have gained knowledge about the industry and have been able to develop relationships with professionals in the field. I have participated in case competitions, where I have had the opportunity to apply what I have learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios, among seven other Universities, my teammates and I representing Illinois State University were able to maintain third place. Overall, my involvement in Beta Gamma Sigma and Gamma Iota Sigma has been a significant part of my college experience. These organizations have provided me with opportunities to develop my leadership skills, gain practical experience, and make valuable connections in the business and insurance industries. I am grateful for the experiences I have had as a member of these organizations, and I look forward to continuing to grow both personally and professionally through my involvement in extracurricular activities.
In the next five years, I hope to graduate with a Summa Cum Laude honor distinction to not only make my parents proud but also be an example for future Gamma Iota Sigma members and secure my dream job which is becoming a Data Analyst in one of the biggest insurance companies. I would like to utilize my skillset in analyzing raw data to organize information, identify patterns, make correlations, and draw conclusions about the findings. I value all the assistance and help I received, which is why I will be looking forward to giving back to each individual or organization that played a role in my growth. After gaining some experience from my job, I will be looking forward to coming back to Gamma Iota Sigma as a speaker this time and doing my best to help future generations.

Internships in Insurance, other Relevant work Experience or Relevant Insurance Industry Involvement
I was a Gallagher sales intern during the summer of 2021. Public and Nonprofit, Aviation, Specialty Lines, and Commercial Lines were some of the lines that I was able to learn during my time with Gallagher. I was also a WSIA Intern during the summer of 2022 with Great American Insurance Group and Burns and Wilcox. During my time with these companies, I was able to learn more about the Excess and Surplus lines industry and learn what I wanted to do after college! It was a very rewarding internship, and I couldn’t have been more thankful to have found and learned about WSIA through the Katie School. I have also accepted a position with Markel as an Underwriting Trainee starting in the summer of 2023! Looking forward to the future!
Insurance Licensing and Professional Designations—Exam Parts Completed or Passed
I have successfully obtained the 2 CPCU waivers by completing and passing FIL 350 and FIL 355 with a B or higher.
Community Involvement During College
First, I will talk about the Midwest Food Bank. I have been actively donating to and helping the Midwest food bank through multiple organizations here on campus throughout my college career. I have also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield in the past which was an awesome opportunity, and I cannot wait do it again in the future. I have also been actively giving back to military family’s by writing them cards through Gamma Iota Sigma.
I achieved 1st place in Gallagher’s Regional Sales Competition in the summer of 2021. I was also selected to attend the WSIA Annual Marketplace in San Diego California as a top 10 intern in the program. I had an awesome experience shadowing Brokers and Underwriters for 3 days and learning much more about the industry. I am heavily involved in Delta Sigma Pi (Professional Business Fraternity) which I have been a part of since the Fall of 2019. I have also been involved with Business week as both a Mentee and a Mentor over my time at ISU. Both have been rewarding experiences, but I truly enjoyed being a mentor to an underclassman and being able to walk them through a few helpful tips that I have learned throughout my time at ISU!
Some career goals that I have include obtaining my CPCU and multiple other insurance designations, along with becoming a senior underwriter and then eventually becoming a manager.

I interned as an Express (small commercial) Underwriter with Liberty Mutual over this past summer, where I learned a lot about risk appetites, quoting insurance applications, and building relationships with independent agents. In addition, I worked alongside a fellow intern on an internship project where we used Excel PivotTables and Tableau to analyze new business sales data through measurements like flow, quote ratio, hit ratio, and issued premium across different lines of business in several important states in the North Central region. We presented our project to the region’s team managers and Underwriting Director during the last week of our internship, and many of them were so intrigued by our work that they asked us to delve deeper and investigate more specific details in their respective territories.
Insurance Licensing and Professional Designations—Exam Parts Completed or Passed Collegiate Studies for CPCU certificate obtained (For completing Ethics 312: Ethical Guidelines for CPCUs and getting two collegiate course waivers based on academic performance for CPCU 520 and CPCU 551)
I organized and set up volunteer events with Midwest Food Bank for our Beta Gamma Sigma chapter.
I am currently serving as the vice president of the ISU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, which is an international business honor society that only accepts the top business undergraduate and graduate students. In my role as vice president, I help the president and the rest of the executive board communicate with members, generate ideas, plan and organize events, and collaborate with other RSOs and local organizations in the aim of motivating business majors at ISU to excel both inside and outside of the classroom. This year, I believe that we as a BGS executive board succeeded in accomplishing our main goals, which were raising awareness about our BGS chapter and increasing involvement amongst active members.
My goal following graduation is to get a full-time role as a commercial underwriter at a well-established regional or national insurance carrier. After that, I want to work on obtaining my CPCU designation and getting a Master’s degree, both of which will make me more well-regarded in the industry and open up new opportunities for me to pursue in my professional career. Eventually, my dream is to become the CFO or CEO of an insurance company sometime before I retire.

One of my immediate goals is to continue to make progress towards obtaining my ACAS (Associate in Casualty Actuarial Society) and then my FCAS (Fellowship). I have already accepted a full-time position upon graduation which will be located within our local area. Because I will be living and working in the local Bloomington/Normal community I plan to be able to remain an active part of the local insurance industry as well as being a proud alumni of Illinois State University’s Actuarial Science program and the Katie School of Insurance. I have a goal of continuing to look for ways that I can give back and help the following generations of students get involved and informed about the amazing opportunities ISU and Bloomington/Normal have to provide. I will get involved in outreach programs through my employer that allow me to come back to the University or into local high schools to share my new knowledge with students that are learning about insurance for the first time. I plan to continue to build a strong support system with the amazing connections that I have gained throughout my education including through Gamma Iota Sigma and the Actuarial Club.

Only got involved with Gamma Iota Sigma fall semester of 2022. Had the opportunity to go to meetings and seminars within the College of Business here and then also was able to attend the Katie School Executive Risk Forum in Chicago with my peers. Got to meet people from plenty of companies and learn more about the industry in the future.
Involved with Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity that only has business majors as members. We learn about polishing our professional skills, such as participating in mock interviews and holding seminars about working on your resume and LinkedIn. We also hold community service events, such as working with Ronald McDonald House and fundraising events that go to our chapter and other charities.
As someone who recently just became involved in the industry, I have a broad desire to look into becoming an insurance underwriter or an actuary. I feel that both compliment who I am as a worker, and how prepared I will be in the future. I want to be able to use everything I learned as a finance major and an RMI major in the same career.

I interned with State Farm Life Company this past summer as an actuarial intern and have extended that internship through the school year. Prior to my time at State Farm, I interned virtually for CNO Financial Group also as an actuarial intern. I have also been a Spencer Scholar for the past 2 years, maintaining active participation in the insurance industry.
I passed exams FM, P, SRM, and FAM. I’m planning to sit for ALTAM in fall of ‘23.
I attend Eastview Christian Church and volunteer with one of their kids’ ministries. In addition, I have served with the Extend team through Encounter Campus Ministries to serve organizations through the community such as Home Sweet Home and the Bloomington Gardens.

I have accepted a position at State Farm upon graduation in their Life/Health/ IPS department as an actuarial analyst. I aim to continue passing actuarial exams, achieving my FSA designation within the next 6 years. While I don’t know where my career will take me after my exam process, I do know that I want to adopt an attitude of continually learning and improving, striving for a management role down the line as well.
