2021-2022 KATIE SCHOOL CERTIFICATE IN LEADERSHIP AND BUSINESS ACUMEN The purpose of the Katie School Certificate in Leadership and Business Acumen (CLBA) is to provide students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills and knowledge sought after by industry employers, which they may not be able to attain from a traditional classroom experience. By demonstrating skills and knowledge in three categories, students who complete the certification should be well suited to enter and excel in the insurance industry. The three areas of focus are non-course technical skills, industry understanding and soft skills. There were 167 students participating in the CLBA program this year, and 6 students received their certification. •

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE & LAW

and

THE KATIE SCHOOL OF INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT •

The Department of Finance, Insurance, and Law at Illinois State University offers majors

in both Finance and Risk Management and Insurance, plus minors in Financial Planning and in Insurance. These programs are intended to help prepare students for careers in financial services and to develop skills in critical thinking, written and oral communication, professionalism, and ethical decision-making. The curricula of the department maintain its relevancy with the advice of industry professionals that sit on the Finance, Insurance and Law Advisory Board. The Finance major prepares students for careers in corporate finance, investment management,

financial institutions, or real estate. The curriculum guides students toward several professional designations, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP). A distinctive feature of the finance curriculum is the opportunity to link theory with financial practice. The Educational Investment Fund (EIF), a student-managed equity portfolio with a market value of about $1,000,000, allows students to earn academic credit while making actual investment decisions with feedback from industry professionals on the Educational Investment Fund Board of Directors. A recent addition to the curriculum is student-managed bond portfolio, called the Educational Fixed-Income Fund (EFIF), which currently has a market value of about $1,300,000. Finance students also interact with industry through the Illinois State Students in Finance (ISSF) student organization and the Institute for Financial Planning and Analysis. Additionally, students participate in internship experiences, both locally and in major metropolitan areas. The Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) major prepares students for careers in the in-

surance industry and in the field of risk management. The Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management was established in 1991 to help students in insurance interact with industry professionals through research projects, industry conferences, mentorships, Katie School alumni events, and visits to board member companies. The Katie School International Internship Program allows students to intern internationally in insurance markets including London, Bermuda, Zurich and Johannesburg with internship opportunities in many domestic locations as well. The student organization Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter provides a professional and social environment for students with community service events, engaged speakers, etiquette dinners, soft skill workshops, mock interviews and other enhancements. Other opportunities for students include Toastmasters to develop public speaking capabilities, the Katie School Certification in Leadership and Business Acumen Program to enrich skills and knowledge sought by industry, and the Ambassador program which sends RMI majors into high school classes to highlight careers and opportunities in the insurance industry. Additional high school outreach programs include the Midwest High School Scholars Analytics Academy, and the Redbird Risk Management Challenge. The Katie School also offers a wide array of programs to industry including the Insurance Execu-

tive Forum, the Lloyd’s of London Conducting Business in the U.S. Program, the Katie School Hall of Fame, the Katie School Innovation and Leadership Awards, the Katie School Symposium, the Katie School Golf Classic, and the Katie School Financial Regulators Program.

This was my first-time diving into insurance outside the classroom, and I really liked it. I am an international business minor, and this project was a great mix of the RMI and IB. Also, I placed third in ISU’s Visual Data Analytics Competition where I learned how to use tableau while making sense of Worker’s Compensation data. Throughout college, I have been busy working part-time jobs. Right now, I am a sales associate at Men’s Wearhouse and during the summers I cleaned carpets and worked for my dad delivering dry cleaning. While these jobs aren’t related to what I will do as a career, balancing school, and part time work (plus having a labor job in the summers) was valuable and motivated me to take school seriously because I know I don’t want to do that kind of work for the rest of my life. Community Involvement During College In October 2019, I participated in Zeta Tau Alpha’s “Big Man on Campus”. This was an event where young men from different RSO’s competed in raising money for Breast Cancer Research by performing a talent, doing a group dance, and answering questions in front of a paying audience. This was one of my favorite events I have done so far at ISU. My “talent” was a dramatic reading of Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs & Ham, and my personal highlight was the questionnaire part. One of the questions was “describe your perfect date” and I answered simply by stating the name of someone in the sorority (beforehand, I asked her if she was okay with me doing that). The crowd loved my answer. Another volunteer event I partook in was PGN’s Turkey Bowl this past November. In this event, my business fraternity (Alpha Kappa Psi) had a group of volunteers form a football team where we all paid a fee, and that fee went to Thon. Thon is a philanthropic organization that raises funds going towards fighting pediatric cancer Other Campus Involvement and Personal Accomplishments On campus I am primarily involved with Gamma and the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi where I served as Pledge Activities Coordinator. In addition to my involvement, I am proud of my growth as an RMI student this year. My first ever insurance class was last Spring and since then I have grown more than expected. I was lucky enough to attend the CPCU Society’s In2Risk conference, and that was the most valuable experience I had as a student due to the networking opportunities and being able to attend various talks from esteemed industry professionals. My favorite talk I heard was Ari Chester’s talk on the future of underwriting. In his talk, he mentioned societal concerns about the future of artificial intelligence in insurance and demonstrated ways in which AI and humans can coexist to create improved insurance products. Another accomplishment I am proud of was being awarded Gamma’s member of the month this past September because I was able to attend a lot of Gamma events and connect with my fellow students while gaining industry knowledge. The involvement in Gamma was nice for me because I had not made many connections with Katie School students prior to this past fall, and I was thrilled to connect with other students who have similar aspirations. Career Goals In my career, I aspire to start out in an Inland Marine underwriting trainee position. For the first few years of my career, I will lay the foundation towards becoming a specialist in this field by devoting myself to learning the ins and outs of my role and the insurance marketplace at large. Finding my own core competency will be valuable as I attempt to find my niche in the insurance industry. In the long-term, I hope to build the knowledge, network, and reputation required to hold a high-level position in an established company and/or open my own firm.
