DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE AND LAW •
The Department of Finance, Insurance, and Law at Illinois State University offers majors in both Finance and Risk Management and Insurance, plus minors in Financial Planning and in Insurance. These programs are intended to help prepare students for careers in financial services and to develop skills in critical thinking, written and oral communication, professionalism, and ethical decision-making. The Finance major prepares students for careers in corporate finance, investment management, financial institutions, or real estate. The curriculum guides students toward several professional designations, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP). A distinctive feature of the finance curriculum is the opportunity to link theory with financial practice. The Educational Investment Fund, a student-managed equity portfolio with a market value of about $900,000, allows students to earn academic credit while making actual investment decisions with feedback from industry professionals on the Educational Investment Fund Board of Directors. A recent addition to the curriculum is student-managed bond portfolio, called the Educational Fixed-Income Fund, which currently has a market value of about $1,100,000. Finance students also interact with industry through the Illinois State Students in Finance (ISSF) student organization and the Institute for Financial Planning and Analysis. Additionally, students participate in internship experiences, both locally and in major metropolitan areas. The curricula of the department maintain its relevancy with the advice of industry professionals that sit on the Finance, Insurance and Law Advisory Board. The Risk Management and Insurance major prepares students for careers in the insurance industry and in the field of risk management. In addition to internships available locally and in cities around the US, the Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management offers international internships in London, Zurich, South Africa, and Bermuda. The Katie School also helps student interact with insurance industry professionals through research projects, industry conferences, and campus visits. The Katie School has an Advisory Board of Executives to offer advice on outreach program development, faculty research, continuing education, and industry engagement.

Future Plans After Graduation My goal is to become a commercial underwriter in the property and casualty insurance industry, and to earn the CPCU designation within 2-4 years after graduation.

I enjoy seeing the support from everybody in the local communities throughout the day and when we run into the Peoria Civic Center. Other Campus Co-Curricular Involvement and/or Personal Accomplishments I have served on the Honors Council as a board member since December of 2019. Six students and six professors meet with the head of the Honors Program to discuss topics that affect various parties within the Honors Program. The purpose is to provide insight from multiple perspectives. Future Plans After Graduation I am currently working as a student intern with the FDIC in the Division of Risk Management and Supervision (RMS). After college I plan to apply for a full-time position and become a commissioned bank examiner within the Chicago Region.
