DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE AND LAW KATIE SCHOOL OF INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT •

The Department of Finance, Insurance, and Law at Illinois State University offers a major in Finance, a minor in Financial Planning, and a major and minor in Insurance. The intended objectives of the Finance major and the Insurance major, as determined by the faculty, are to help students grow and develop the characteristics of a competent finance or insurance professional, a critical thinker, a professional with communication and interpersonal skills, and an ethical leader and decision-maker.

The Finance major prepares students for careers in corporate finance, investments, financial institutions, and real estate. The curriculum guides students toward professional certification, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certificate. A distinctive feature of the finance curriculum over the last 30 years is the opportunity to link theory with financial practice. The Educational Investment Fund, a student-managed equity portfolio with a market value of about $500,000, allows students to earn academic credit while making actual investment decisions with feedback from the Educational Investment Fund Board of Directors. A recent addition to the curriculum is a student-managed fixed-income portfolio, called the Educational Fixed-income Fund, which has a market value of about $1,100,000. The course blends actual bond market decisions with academic credit. Finance students also participate in financial industry and corporate internship experiences, both locally and in major metropolitan areas. The curricula maintain its relevancy with the advice of the professionals that sit on the Finance, Insurance and Law Advisory Board.

The Risk Management and Insurance major prepares students for careers in the insurance industry and in the field of risk management. Internships are available to provide experience at insurance organizations in London, Zurich, South Africa, and Bermuda, as well as in major metropolitan areas.

The Katie School helps arrange student internships and sponsors applied research, speakers, panels, short courses and professional education in the field of insurance. Insurance majors, Insurance minors, and Actuarial Science majors benefit from interacting with industry professionals and academic leaders brought to campus by the Katie School. The Katie School has an Advisory Board of Executives to offer advice on outreach program development, faculty research, continuing education, and industry engagement.

This internship was not only a personal accomplishment, but a God sent opportunity that solidified my stance as a Finance major. Throughout the course of the Summer I was able to shadow a financial analyst and learn the basic skills necessary for the job. This allowed me to realize that this profession was a calling and the only way towards personal future success. The content I learned during this internship is utilized in every class I have taken this school year at ISU. Being given this wonderful opportunity, and successfully completing it, is a personal accomplishment of mine.

Goals After Graduation After graduation I hope to stay in the same industry as my last internship, Envestnet.

I believe the FinTech industry is innovative and continuously growing over time which attracts me to it. Fortunately, the internship went very well, and I plan to return this Summer once again as the Corporate Finance intern at the Chicago office. The mission of this company is to promote financial wellness for all which is what attracted me to it in the first place. This small sentence of a mission statement motivated me to want to seek solutions for those who are underprivileged financially. After graduation, I would love to work in the financial services industry, but continue going to school to study the economy. I believe that financial services are a small sector of the economy and to understand that small sector, you must understand the bigger picture of it all. By accomplishing graduate school for economics, I hope to one day solve the unfortunate issue the world faces of financial health being a privilege to some, while others will never have the option of it. If we, as citizens of this population, continue to expand our knowledge of the economy and finance, one day we will all realize that financial wellness is not something that the 1% is privileged to have, rather it is something deserved of 100% of the population. No one deserves to be born into a family that is already struggling financially and has no access to information or resources to better their situation. Everyone deserves financial wellness, and if the resources to enhance financial security are not there, then we as the coming generation must use our knowledge to find the necessary information and create a solution. That is my number one goal after graduation.

Goals After Graduation Upon graduating, it is my goal to work as an underwriter in the excess and surplus market of the insurance industry.
