FROM THE CHAIRPERSON I’m pleased to report that the Department of Accounting at Illinois State continues to thrive. While enrollments nationwide are falling due to a variety of demographic and cost factors, the Accounting Department’s undergraduate enrollment has risen to 858. This is up 32.6 percent since 2010 and by far the highest it has been in my 10 years at Illinois State. Additionally, this was achieved while keeping student qualifications strong. I believe we can attribute our strong enrollments to two Jay S. Rich primary causes. The first is our faculty and staff who are dedicated to our mission of providing students with a high-quality, student-centered education. The second is the outstanding success experienced by our students as shown by their pass rates on the CPA exam and by finding full-time, professional employment.

There have been several faculty changes in the Department of Accounting. Tom Craig retired after more than 34 years at Illinois State University (see “Tom Craig retires” on Page 6). Many, many students have praised Craig’s Advanced Auditing course for helping to prepare them for the CPA exam. We wish Tom the best of luck in retirement. He will be missed. This year Kristie Murphy and Bryan Graden joined the department as tenure-track faculty (see “New faculty” article on Page 4). Please join me in welcoming Kristie and Bryan to Illinois State.

I am also excited by a number of developments in the department.

One of our priorities for the last few years at the department- and college-level, has been to provide opportunities for our students to develop

professionalism skills. As part of this initiative, we began two new programs in the department. First, a student/practitioner mentorship program was started to provide students with guidance on a wide range of professional topics (see “Department establishes mentorship program” on Page 9). Second, a student case competition was started, complete with practitioner judges (see “First case competition” on Page 6).

Another department priority is to provide four- or five-year scholarship opportunities for outstanding incoming freshmen. Neighboring states, such as Missouri and Iowa, provide merit scholarships to outstanding Illinois high school students in an attempt to drive their college costs below in-state Illinois options. Due to the generous commitments of one individual and one corporate partner, we were able to award two four-year scholarships to outstanding incoming freshmen. Additionally, it appears as if we have commitments to permit us to offer four more of these scholarships next year. I would like to reach a point where we are able to offer between 10–15 scholarships, each covering at least 50 percent of tuition every year. While this is an ambitious goal, these scholarships will provide an opportunity for us to compete for Illinois’ best and brightest students.

We are proud of the job our graduates do, from passing the CPA exam to excelling in the workplace. The hard work of the students and faculty makes this possible. It is also due to the faithful support you provide to the department through your generous gifts of time and money. We cannot thank you enough for this support!

ACCOUNTING ALUMNI INDUCTED INTO COLLEGE OF BUSINESS HALL OF FAME The College of Business (COB) Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 2002 to recognize the achievements of outstanding alumni.

In spring 2014 in conjunction with Business Week activities, Dean Gerry McKean inducted five outstanding alumni into the College of Business Hall of Fame. Four of the Hall of Fame inductees were accounting alumni: Duane Bell ’74, Mike DeWalt ’80, Sandra Reese ’80, and Stuart Schuette ’86.

Bell started his career as a CPA for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. (now KPMG).

During his 20-year tenure at KPMG, he advised clients on various business matters and served as the chief financial officer of Bell KPMG Consulting.

Presently, Bell is the president and CEO of Tectura Corp., a worldwide leader in business consulting specializing in Microsoft Dynamics enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management.

Before joining Tectura, Bell was an executive for several service organizations. Bell oversaw the initial public offerings of two of these entities.

Bell has served as a board member of many nonprofit organizations and is currently a member of the College of Business Advisory Council.

DeWalt is currently serving as the vice president of Caterpillar Inc.’s strategic services division. His responsibilities include corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, corporate economics, investor DeWalt relations, business risk management, and competitive intelligence.

Before becoming a vice president, DeWalt was the corporate controller for Caterpillar. In that position, he oversaw corporate accounting, forecasting, planning, and business analysis. Before being named as the corporate controller for Caterpillar, DeWalt was the director of investor relations.

DeWalt has also held international positions for Caterpillar since he joined the company in 1981. He has been the senior vice president of finance and planning for F.G. Wilson in Northern Ireland and the finance director for Perkins Engines in the United Kingdom.

DeWalt is very active on the Illinois State campus and currently serves as a member of the College of Business Advisory Council.

Reese is a senior vice president at McKinsey Recovery and Transformation Services. Reese has over 25 years of experience working with companies on performance improvement, restructuring, Reese crisis management, and strategic growth. She has focused most of her career on advising companies that need transformation and turnaround strategies. Before joining McKinsey, Reese worked for Grant Thornton and KPMG. She also co-founded a consulting firm. Reese is a CPA as well as a certified turnaround professional.

Schuette is currently the chief operating officer of US Foods with nearly $19 billion in annual revenue. He is in charge of planning and directing for more than 60 divisions of US Foods. Schuette has Schuette served in many roles during his 20-year tenure at US Foods. He has been a manager of planning, manager of financial operations, division vice president, division president, zone president, and region president.

Before joining US Foods, Schuette was an executive for Martin Brower, a subsidiary of Reyes Holdings LLC, the largest distributor to McDonald’s restaurants.

Schuette serves on the College of Business Advisory Council.

ACCOUNTING NEWS ACCOUNTING SURVIVOR ALUMNA COMPETES ON CBS REALITY SHOW Latasha Fox ’99 is a triple threat: brains, beauty, and brawn. That’s what she said in her audition video for the popular reality TV show Survivor.

Little did she know that brains, beauty, and brawn were going to be the theme of the 2013 Survivor: Cagayan season. Fox was selected as one of the contestants and was filmed for seven weeks in the Philippines in July and August of 2013. Cameras rolled 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There were 18 castaways that were divided into three tribes of brains, beauty, and brawn. Fox, a CPA, was part of the brains tribe.

The game lasted 39 days. She was voted off on day 33 and finished in sixth place.

Fox grew up in Alton, just outside St. Louis, and came to Illinois State on a track scholarship.

She was also a Redbird cheerleader. Fox decided to be an accounting major after taking an introductory accounting course from Instructor Maureen O’Brien. Upon graduation, she worked in St. Louis for two years at KPMG and then transitioned to Edward Jones where she is a limited partner and a CPA in the finance division.

Highlights of Fox’s career include being selected

by Edward Jones to attend the competitive strategies in financial services program at Harvard University, representing Edward Jones in the St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative Fellows program, and being named a St. Louis Business Journal “Top 30 Under 30” Award recipient.

Fox’s roommate at Illinois State was also a Redbird cheerleader. Her roommate was interested in becoming a cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys and introduced Fox to the idea of becoming a cheerleader for a professional football team. Fox auditioned to be a St. Louis Rams cheerleader and got the job.

She cheered for the Rams from 2000–2006 and was the cheerleaders’ captain from 2003–2006.

“As a Rams cheerleader, I received a Super Bowl ring, visited military bases in the U.S., Japan, and Korea, and had the opportunity to participate in over 150 charity events,” she said.

“These were some of the most memorable years of my life.”

Fox advises current students to choose a career about which they are passionate. “If you enjoy your career, you will approach it with energy and excitement,” she said. Fox also ad-

vises students to move around within their organizations. She has worked in six different departments while at Edward Jones. “Working in other areas has allowed me to build a large network of contacts, gain firsthand knowledge of firm operations, and strategically think about the business at a higher level,” she said. Finally, Fox advises students to always be mindful of their career objectives and their personal brand. “Every skill you acquire, every position you take, every communication you send, every committee you join, everything you do, should be reflective of and consistent with your career objective and personal brand,” she said.

“When your name is mentioned and you have built a consistent brand and objective, people will draw the same conclusion about you. Whether that conclusion is favorable or not depends on you.”

Regarding studying for the CPA exam, Fox recommends that students have a detailed time line to guide their studies and that they stick to their time lines. She also recommends planning some fun activities for much-needed study breaks.

“Thanks to ISU, I was well prepared for the real world,” Fox said. She was also well prepared for the reality TV world with her sixth-place finish. Fox believes her experience on Survivor has made her a better leader. After Survivor, she focuses even more on building and maintaining relationships and thinks more strategically when making business decisions. When asked if she would compete on Survivor a second time if invited back, the answer is “Yes, definitely yes.”

NEW FACULTY BRYAN GRADEN, CPA,

is an assistant professor in the Department of Accounting.

Graden pursued his doctoral studies at Washington University in St. Louis before joining the faculty at Illinois State Graden University. He also worked as an audit associate for KPMG’s Salt Lake City office for two years after receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Brigham Young University. Graden maintains an active CPA license. He teaches Intermediate Accounting I to junior-level students in the Department of Accounting and is excited to bring practical experience and research knowledge to the classroom.

Outside of work, Graden enjoys spending time with his wife, Sarah, and three young children; providing service in church assignments; and playing the piano.

KRISTIE

MURPHY

is an assistant professor teaching Cost and Management Accounting. Before joining the faculty at Illinois State, Murphy earned her Bachelor of Science in accounting and Murphy Master of Business Administration from Eastern Illinois University. She earned a Doctorate of Business Adminis-

tration from Louisiana Tech University. During her doctoral studies, Murphy was selected as an AAA/Deloitte/J. Michael Cook Doctoral Consortium Fellow.

Murphy has published in the Journal of Applied Business Research. She also received the Clute Institute Academic Conference Best Paper Award.

Murphy resides in Normal and enjoys dancing and reading in her spare time.

ALUMNI AND ORGANIZATIONS CREATE FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS To meet long-term strategic goals, partnerships with outside organizations and individuals are essential. The Department of Accounting is very appreciative of the financial support that has created the following faculty fellowships.

Professor Debbie Seifert received the Caterpillar Faculty Accounting Award. This award was created to help recruit and retain outstanding faculty in the Department of Accounting and will help maintain the tradition of accounting excellence at Illinois State.

Den Patten ’78, M.S. ’82, received the James A. Hallam Endowed Accounting Scholar award. This award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated extraordinary teaching skills, professional pride, commitment, leadership, and a dedication to excellence in the mutually supportive areas of teaching, research, and service.

Professor Ron Guidry received the Stephen Hagge Faculty Accounting Award. The award is based on excellent teaching skills and the ability to produce distinguished intellectual contributions in the field of accounting.

Professor Debbie Lindberg received the Ernst and Young Faculty Accounting Award. This award recognizes an outstanding faculty member and promotes visibility for Ernst & Young within the accounting faculty and student body.

CPA EXAM RESULTS Illinois State students continue to excel on the CPA Exam. For calendar year 2014, the Illinois Board of Examiners reported the following pass rates for Illinois State students: auditing 47 percent; business 64 percent; financial 53 percent; and regulation 59 percent.

The Department of Accounting congratulates the following 71 Illinois State graduates who passed all four parts of the CPA examination in 2014, and who also passed the ethics exam.

Due to the testing format, we may not be aware of everyone who passed the exam in 2014.

DAVE CURRIE PASSES AWAY It is with great sadness that the Department of Accounting reports that retired Associate Professor Dave Currie ’69 passed away at the age of 69 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He taught at Illinois State for 18 Currie years. Currie is fondly remembered by many accounting alumni who took his tax and advanced tax classes. He was widely regarded as a top tax expert, and he held many highly attended tax seminars across the United States.

SCOTTY ROLF, M.S. ’07, CPA, is a tax manager at Morgan Stanley in Chicago.

er earned a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era.

Currie retired to Scottsdale where he continued to practice accounting. He had a 45-year career in tax accounting. Currie also enjoyed returning to Illinois State’s campus as often as he could. He especially enjoyed the Department of Accounting alumni and friends golf outing.

Currie and his wife, Margaret, established the Dave Currie Scholarship in 2009. This scholarship provides financial resources to deserving students majoring in accounting.

In retirement, Currie served on the board of the Pregnancy Resource Clinic of Arizona, an organization helping young women learn their options in the midst of an unexpected pregnancy.

Currie is survived by Margaret, his wife of 47 years, and two sons, Doug and Tim.

The Early Career Achievement Awards (ECAA) are presented to truly outstanding young alumni who have experienced significant professional success. They are selected from nominations made by faculty, staff, and alumni of the College of Business. The nominations are reviewed by departmental teams. Twelve alumni were honored October 3, 2014. The award winners participated in panel discussions with students and faculty and were later recognized at a public reception.

The accounting alumni ECAA honorees for 2014 were Gerald (Bill) Gugerty, B.S./M.P.A. ’07, and Elliot Kammeyer, B.S./M.P.A. ’06.

Gugerty started his career as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers in the financial services industry. He then earned a second master’s degree in international relations at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Gugerty’s next endeavor involved studying microfinance institutions in Chisinau, Moldova, as part of a Fulbright research project. While in Moldova, he also taught accounting and public finance at the Free International University of Moldova.

Gugerty lives in Washington, D.C., where he is a financial management officer in the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Kammeyer started his career with Caterpillar Inc. in 2006 after graduating from Illinois State. He is currently a senior accounting supervisor for Caterpillar Inc. where he helps support the research and development function. Prior to his current position, Kammeyer held various staff accounting positions at Caterpillar that involved budgeting, forecasting, planning and analysis, internal controls, and cost and decision support. To help acquire accounting talent for

Caterpillar, he is an active recruiter of Illinois State accounting graduates.

Kammeyer is a past president of the Central Illinois Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). He was honored in June by the national IMA organization by being named an Outstanding Young Professional (see “Elliot Kammeyer receives IMA Award” on Page 7).

TOM CRAIG RETIRES Tom Craig, an accounting faculty member since 1981, retired in the summer of 2014. Craig, a CPA, holds a Ph.D. in accountancy from the University of Illinois and was promoted to professor of Craig accounting in 1995.

Craig taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses during his 30-plus years at Illinois State, including Accounting Principles I and II, Intermediate Accounting I and II, Income Taxation I and II, Auditing I and II, Accounting Research Methods, and Financial Accounting Theory. He also taught the auditing section of the CPA Review Course for 20 years and served as internship director for about five years. Most alums will remember Craig for his instruction of Advanced Auditing (ACC 336), which he taught for over 25 consecutive years to more than 2,500 students.

In determining course objectives and coverage, Craig said he never forgot the CPA Exam’s importance to students, and he contributed to the department’s well-deserved reputation for success on the CPA Exam.

Craig and his wife, Caroline, who also was a CPA and held a Ph.D. in accountancy from the University of Illinois, taught together at Illinois State for over 20 years and had many students in common, especially students enrolled in Advanced Auditing and Advanced Taxation.

In 2013 Craig and Jon Farney ’93, a former student of Caroline Craig, established the Caroline Kern Craig Scholarship Fund. FIRST CASE COMPETITION In November 2014 students were given the opportunity to compete in a case competition. Five

teams were given a complicated set of facts surrounding a stock-based compensation problem.

The students spent one week working on solving the problem, writing up an executive summary, and putting together a 15-minute presentation. The five teams presented their findings and answered questions from a team of judges.

The judges were Bob Glazik ’98 (McGladrey); Elliot Kammeyer, B.S./M.P.A. ’06 (Caterpillar); Sean LaBounty ’07 (PricewaterhouseCoopers); Terry Miller ’82, M.B.A. ’87 (State Farm); and Ron Guidry (faculty). After the presentations, each judge met with one of the teams to provide feedback on the content and the quality of the presentations. The judges were impressed with the professionalism of the students.

The competitors were Jake Donnowitz, Ian Mertens, Patrick O’Connell, Mike Trompeter, and Ryan Trompeter (Team 1); Michael Currie, Justin Leverette, Matt McGuire, and Mike Sarkisaw (Team 2); Clayton Fink, Kevin Fogarty, Zach Guenette, and Klinton Smith (Team 3); Chris Kaminski, Jimmy O’Neill, Javier Padilla, and Alex Strauss (Team 4); and Zach Hazen, Conner Heraty, Chris Kaufmann, Aaron Ruff, and Tyler Walgren (Team 5). Team 2 received the first-place prize of $2,000, followed by Team 3 with the second-place prize of $1,000, and Team 1 with the third-place prize of $500.

ELLIOT KAMMEYER RECEIVES IMA AWARD Elliot Kammeyer, B.S./M.P.A. ’06, was named an Outstanding Young Professional by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).

Kammeyer received the award in June 2014 at the annual Kammeyer conference and exhibition in Minneapolis. The Outstanding Young Professional is awarded globally to just five individuals each year by the IMA. The award is given to IMA members under the age of 33 employed in accounting or finance with a degree from an accredited university. Each award recipient has made an outstanding contribution to the profession and is a certified management accountant.

Kammeyer served as the president of the Central Illinois Chapter of the IMA from

2008–2011 and currently serves on the Young Professional Advisory Committee for the IMA. He made a presentation titled “Planning, Budgeting, and Forecasting—A Primer” at the IMA student conference in Indianapolis in November 2014. Kammeyer also participated in a career round table and a panel discussion on “Career Tracks: Converging on Management Accounting.”

Kammeyer is a senior accounting supervisor at Caterpillar Inc., in Peoria. He has been with Caterpillar for eight years.

FACULTY AWARDS Each year the Department of Accounting recognizes the contributions of its full-time faculty members in teaching, scholarly productivity, and service. In 2014 the department was pleased to recognize the following faculty members for their outstanding performance: Debbie Seifert (teaching), Den Patten (scholarly productivity), and Debbie Lindberg (service).

In November 2014 Daniel Ames received McGladrey’s Arthur H. Winakor Outstanding Teacher Award. The recipient of this award is selected by a student vote.

Jay Rich was a recipient of an Outstanding Educator Award presented by the Illinois CPA Society in June 2014.

DIANE SKIDMORE OUTSTANDING ADVISOR At the February 2014 Founders Day celebration, Diane Skidmore ’77, M.S. ’98, received the Herb Sanders Award for Outstanding Academic Advisement.

This university-level award recognizes adSkidmore visors who care deeply for students and who proactively advise students. The award also recognizes advisors who support universitywide academic advisement.

Skidmore has both a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in college student personnel administration from Illinois State University. She previously worked for the Mennonite College of Nursing in registration and records and Heartland Community College in financial aid. Skidmore started as the Department of Accounting’s academic advisor in 2001. She works with four-year undergradu-

FEATURED ALUMNA: SALLY STILES ’90 I’m Sally Stiles ’90 and very proud to be an Illinois State University accounting alumna. I am currently the chief tax officer at Caterpillar Inc. In this position, I lead an organization of approximately 120 tax professionals located in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. I am also responsible for the global customs compliance and export controls functions.

My accounting education at Illinois State provided a strong foundation for my career. In fact, an Illinois State professor, Caroline Craig, inspired me to pursue a career in corporate tax. After graduating and passing the CPA exam, I worked as a tax consultant for Price Waterhouse in its Peoria office where I was responsible for both corporate and individual tax compliance matters for various clients. In that position, I worked on international tax matters for Caterpillar and realized that I wanted to work for a Fortune 50 company.

I joined Caterpillar in 1992 and held several different international tax staff positions until 1998. I then served as Asia region director for 10 years and Europe, Africa, and Middle East director for three years. I moved into the role of director, global tax and trade operations, in May 2012 and was recently promoted to chief tax officer. Caterpillar is a much larger and more complex company than it was in 1992. The company’s sales and revenues have grown from $10.2 billion in 1992 to $55.7 billion in 2013. In addition, the global tax and trade compliance environment has become much more complex.

Understanding the subtle nuances of tax law and navigating through the complex world of tax and trade regulations have been extremely challenging, but thoroughly rewarding. Tax laws are becoming increasingly complex, which makes it more difficult to advise the business. It is also challenging to keep up with rapidly changing business technologies. My guidance for students and other professionals is to make it a point to understand your company’s business model and how you can personally contribute to the bottom line. Accounting education alone is not enough; one needs good leadership skills and a keen business acumen to be successful in today’s rapidly changing environment.

I attended Illinois State full time as a nontraditional student while working and raising three children. After Illinois State, I went on to earn a master’s degree in taxation from the University of Illinois while pursuing my career. The highlight of my professional life was a tour with U.S. government officials through China, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey where I had the opportunity to meet with President Askar Akayev, who was the first democratically elected leader of Kyrgyzstan. I have also testified before the House Ways and Means Committee on international tax issues and met Margaret Thatcher. My decision to pursue degrees in accounting definitely opened up a world of possibilities that I could never have imagined.

Accounting major Parker Freiburg received the Doug Collins Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for 2014. Freiburg was honored at the 15th annual academic excellence awards banquet, better known as “The Reggies.” This awards ceremony is sponsored by State Farm Insurance. Freiburg, as a senior on the men’s golf team, earned all-conference honors while helping the team finish second at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. He was also named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in July, one of only seven in the state.

This is the second consecutive year that an accounting major has won the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Last year, Danielle Schumacher (swimming) won the female scholar-athlete award.

Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) is the national honors fraternity for financial information professionals. This includes accounting, finance, and information systems majors. Students in these

majors who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and complete 30 credit hours are eligible for membership. The following accounting majors were inducted into Beta Alpha Psi in spring 2014: Carissa Coppola, Clayton Fink, Kevin Fogarty, Anna Kross, Ryan Marosi, James McMullan, Klinton Smith, Lindsay Stenger, Melissa Violetto, and Hannah Zhang. The fall 2014 inductees were Kody Barnes, Jim Dickert, Luke McCain, and Charles Smith.

Ashley Bohnker received a $2,000 scholarship from the Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS). She is the sixth Illinois State University ICPAS Student Ambassador. Bohnker will speak to individual students and student organizations about the ICPAS as well as announce ICPAS student scholarships. At least once per semester, she will conduct an ICPAS student membership drive.

Grant Rudin, Montserrat Sanchez-Garcia, Joseph Scavelli, Angela Taylor, and Jake Trancoso were named student Caterpillar Scholars in fall 2014. Students must write a 1,000-word essay describing how they exemplify the characteristics of leadership and excellence. A faculty committee chooses the scholarship recipients based on their written essay and academic record. Each student received a $2,500 scholarship funded by the Caterpillar Foundation.

William M. Smith was selected as the Phillip and Lee Ann (Baker) Clary Endowed Scholarship recipient. He received a $715 scholarship.

The department is pleased to welcome its new freshmen Presidential Scholars: Mike Fuller, Annelise Mool, Kyler Stookey, Luke Tepen, and Andrew Young. Presidential Scholars are chosen based on high academic achievement, demonstrated leadership qualities, and evidence of commitment to service.

The Beta Alpha Psi and Student Accounting Society (SAS) leadership teams attended three professional conferences in 2014. BAP officers Kyle Cox, Kelly Jansen, and Melissa Violetto attended the Midwest regional meeting in Indianapolis on March 28–29. Kody Barnes, Cox, Jansen, and Violetto attended the annual meeting for BAP in Atlanta August 7–9. SAS officers Michael Currie, Andy Gassman, Alex Hausman, Zach Hazen, Ashley Holada, Evan Koppes, Matt McGuire, Jerryn Poothakary, Mark Sarkisaw, Mike Sarkisaw, and Chris Zohfeld attended the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Student Leadership Conference in Indianapolis November 6–8. Professor Debbie Lindberg attended the BAP conferences with the students, and Associate Professor Debbie Seifert and Instructional Assistant Professor Harlan Fuller accompanied the students to the IMA conference.

JACK HARTUNG RECEIVES ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Student internships continued

John “Jack” Hartung ’79, MBA ’80, received the University’s Alumni Achievement Award at the Founders Day ceremony on February 20, 2014. This award is presented to alumni whose achievements in their field have received statewide, national, or international recognition.

After spending 18 years with McDonald’s, Hartung joined Chipotle Mexican Grill in 2002. While at McDonald’s, Hartung held numerous positions, the last one being vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of its partner brands group. He was named the CFO of Chipotle in 2002 and oversaw its initial public offering in 2006. Chipotle was a privately held company with fewer than 200 restaurants when Hartung became CFO. Chipotle now has more than 1,500 restaurants worldwide and a market capitalization of more than $16 billion.

As CFO, Hartung oversees Chipotle’s finance department, which includes financial and strategic planning, financial reporting, investor relations, and tax and business strategy. Additionally, he directs information technology, benefits and compensation, and safety, security and risk.

At Illinois State, Hartung earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics and an MBA with a concentration in finance. He passed both the CPA and CMA exams shortly after graduating from Illinois State.

Hartung is married to Nancy (Flessor) ’78, M.S. ’79, and has five children. He enjoys running, traveling, and visiting other restaurants.

The Department of Accounting started a mentorship program last school year. Approximately 80 students were matched with professional mentors. Mentoring relationships provide a learning experience for students outside the classroom, where they have a chance to see the opportunities the “real world” has in store for them.

This mentorship program is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their professional skills through the guidance of a professional in the business community. Students participating in this program not only introduce themselves to the professional world but also represent the Department of Accounting to its alumni and friends.

ALUMNI GIFTS AND PLEDGES HELP ENSURE QUALITY EDUCATION Alumni support of Illinois State University is tremendously important for many reasons.

Gifts received from alumni provide the “margin of excellence” in our programs. It is interesting to note that just 19 percent of the University’s operating funds actually come from the state of Illinois. Additionally, outside organizations view alumni giving as a measure of “customer satisfaction.” For example, the percentage of alumni who give to Illinois State University factors in to the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” rankings. While the number is only a small factor in the overall ranking, Illinois State University stands well behind the institutions we strive to emulate. For these reasons, your annual gift is extremely important. Your gift, no matter the size, can make a real difference to Illinois State University students.

Gifts (see Pages 14–15) from Department of Accounting alumni and friends were made between October 1, 2013, and September 30, 2014. The students, faculty, and staff of the Department of Accounting thank all those who have supported the department and the University. This significant support is testimony to the enhanced sense of mutual responsibility to ensure quality education in accounting and business information systems.

During the fall semester Telefund, many accounting alumni received calls from Illinois State students requesting financial support

for the College of Business. More than 200 accounting alumni pledged $164,842 to support quality education in the department and college. This represents a 7 percent decrease in donors and a 438 percent increase in dollars pledged from last year’s Telefund. The goal of the Telefund is to have 20 percent of our accounting alumni supporting the University each year.

You can help the department reach its goal by completing the form on Page 14 and mailing your check payable to the Illinois State University Foundation. By writing “Department of Accounting” on the memo line of your check, your entire contribution will go to support the department.

DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING ANNUAL GOLF OUTING The annual accounting scholarship-fund golf outing was held September 19 with 60 participants. The outing provides scholarships to outstanding junior accounting majors at the spring Annual Accounting Awards Ceremony.

Wonderful weather greeted the participants.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO HIRE THE BEST ILLINOIS STATE ACCOUNTING GRADUATES? Each year the Illinois State Career Center hosts a Fall Internship Fair and a Fall Career Fair.

In 2015, the Fall Internship Fair is scheduled for September 16 and the Fall Career Fair is scheduled for October 8. New this year is an Accounting Career Fair on September 11.

These events are an easy way to get your firm or company in front of a large number of students.

Accounting faculty have recommended these events to accounting students and, in some cases, have even required students attend them. At

the 2014 Fall Internship Fair, over 1,000 Illinois State students attended. Of these attendees, 273 were accounting and business information systems (BIS) majors. At the 2014 fall Career Fair, over 700 Illinois State students attended. Of these attendees, 75 were accounting and BIS majors.
