The award is named in honour of CMHA founder, Clarence Meredith Hincks. Hincks (1885 – 1964) was instrumental in a number of mental health reforms in Canada. Often referred to as the father of Canadian mental health care, Hincks played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Canadian National Committee for Mental Hygiene (CNCMH) in 1918. He went on to become the CNCMH’s director in 1924.

In the early 1900s “malfunctions of the mind,” as they were called at that time, were poorly understood. As a man that suffered from bouts of periodic depression, Dr. Hincks nursed a growing interest in his patients that could not adequately perform work or life duties due to “malfunctions of the mind.” Aided by his natural empathy and knowledge of revolutionary psychological developments in European medicine, Hincks dedicated his career to investigating the cause and relief of mental disorders. Today, the C.M. Hincks Award is given annually to an organization or workplace that promotes advanced mental health awareness through work and/or volunteer activities; specifically those that reduce the stigma and discrimination of mental health disorders, address social justice in the area of mental health and work to improve mental health for all.

This year CMHA’s branches and associations nominated a total of nine contenders for the C.M. Hincks Award. ATB Financial was chosen because, according to CHMA, “they excel in the area of workplace mental health initiatives.”

At ATB, workplace mental health awareness is a priority. A CHMA news release states, “[ATB Financial has] increased their focus on mental health in the workplace in under a year resulting in increased dialogue among staff, workplace mental health training for managers, and the establishment of an action group that is developing skills and capacity to educate other employees more regularly.” The company has also initiated a mental health action group plan “comprised of employees that have experience with

One of the lunch and learn sessions has already taken place. Titled Creating Value from Innovation: How the Innovation System can help your company, this April 24, 2014, lunch and learn introduced Leduc-Nisku entrepreneurs to what TEC could do for their companies.

Lunch and learn sessions such as these are becoming increasingly popular among corporations. They fit into ones schedule while delivering insights that can revamp or launch a career, provide personal motivation, create networking opportunities, and much more.

TEC’s history and experience are a great boon to the Leduc-Nisku Economic Association. TEC serves approximately 100 clients and since 2011, has generated $180 million in revenue, raised $85 million in financing and funding, invested $49 million in research and development and has grown in revenue and employment by 25 per cent.

“Leduc-Nisku has already been a leader in developing and improving oilfield service technology,” says Engelbart.

“Fracking, horizontal drilling and oilsands technology were all a part of our innovative spirit. Being able to support and encourage our startup companies with TEC’s expertise will simply accelerate the whole process.”

Alberta’s international region houses the second largest industrial energy park in North America, boasts an average family income of over $100,000, has a low unemployment rate of 4.6 per cent and has completed $817,000,000 in commercial and industrial construction projects since 2009. n his fourth generation farm in Spruce Grove, Alberta, an easy 28 kilometres from Edmonton, soft spoken and personable Stan Schellenberger is having a relatively good day.

Despite being a seasoned, weathered and resilient farmer and rich with diverse life experience, he is having a slightly sentimental moment.

“Some of the land I’m farming goes back to my great grandfather in 1895.

I realize it’s a generational thing and I’m not complaining one bit,” Schellenberger shrugs with a wonderfully warm and gentle smile. “It was always my choice and my chosen career. We loved farming, loved the

lifestyle and the family tradition.

“Today, decisions are made differently. Of course I understand and respect that. It’s just that it bothers a lot of us who lived with the idea that our kids would take over and be that next generation.”

Schellenberger is a former MP, assistant deputy minister of agriculture, deputy minister of economic development who currently runs a small beef operation in Spruce Grove, although the ranch is a bit farther out in Keephills.

The Sultan of Style is Still Going Strong

any of us living in Edmonton during the Oilers’ glory days will also remember local tailoring legend Sam Abouhassan, and the integral part he played in maintaining the dynasty’s very public persona. While the image of that hoisted Cup may never fade, a lot of things have, and we at Business in Edmonton found ourselves wondering what the tailor to the stars, also known as the sultan of style, has been up to.

BIE: The city has changed quite a bit since those early days.

What’s changed for you?

SA: I still come in six days a week. I’m busier than ever. But now I’m dressing the sons of my clients, too.

BIE: Do you see more men appreciating that?

SA: You know, I see many of my clients appear in your magazine.

But there are still successful men who for some reason won’t take the time to get a custom -made suit. I know they’re going to say well, I don’t wear a suit for a living, but there will always be events where you really shouldn’t be showing up in off-the-rack clothing.

BIE: Like appearing in a magazine?

SA: Exactly. But once they make the effort to come and see me, we can look after their suit and shirt needs over the phone or email. From then on, they’re my clients for life.

BIE: A lot of the big clothiers have moved away from the core.

You haven’t. Why? SA: When I read John Day’s story in your magazine, I really liked what he said about how excited he was to come back to downtown, to make it vibrant again. I understood every line that he said, because I love downtown. That’s why I stayed. Downtown shoppers are not ‘tire-kickers.’

BIE: Tell us about your nickname, “tailor to the stars.”

SA: I was very much involved with the Oilers in the ’80s and ’90s.

And let me tell you, if you can fit an athlete and fit him comfortably, you can fit anybody. I was also looking after the premiers’ and the mayors’ suits, the who’s who. But to me, the real stars are the ones who take some of their hard-earned money and invest it back into the community. With my friend Kevin Lowe, we were able to raise $8 million for the Stollery Children’s Hospital. That’s something that I take a lot of pride in.

BIE: You’ve said that the only way to make the best suits is by hand.

SA: The client will choose from the finest fabrics in the world.

First we will sponge it, hand cut it, then shape the canvas for inside the coat according to the proportion of the client. Sew it then hand finish it and hand press it. It will be absolutely perfect.

The figures from Statistics Canada show that the average value of total assets per farm in Canada rose from nearly $1.5 million in 2007 to over $2 million in 2011.

“We are on a learning curve and the requirements of a typical farm are changing,” admits Knash. “The struggling, barely-surviving farmer is long gone, although the volatility of the profitability still varies from year to year. Managing today’s farm operations is capital-intensive, with financing needs like land values, increasingly expensive chemicals, sophisticated and pricey equipment, quotas and other assets.”

Some agriculture consultants and seasoned farmers agree that the generation gap and the demands of contemporary business sometimes combine as positives to not only change farming attitudes, but to create results and success.

“We’ll never get away from the basics of growing a crop and raising livestock. As farm operators we’re the manager, the CEO and the janitor,” chuckles Albert Wagner, who is currently the manager, the CEO and the janitor of a large grain crop operation in Stony Plain, Alberta, 25 miles west of Edmonton.

“We must understand the business side of farming. We are in a world market when it comes to supply and demand. What happens in the world affects us, whether it’s political problems in the Ukraine or production in Brazil. Experience is a good teacher, but farmers must accept that we are world players.

“Just as technology has changed farming, the costs and business aspects have limited the options for the younger generation,” he says. “Unless it’s succession and working the family farm, the big impediment for getting into the business is that a farm operation takes a tremendous amount of money.”

According to Knash, “Today, the typical farm usually has lots of equity, but it is a capital-intensive business.

About 10 years ago, a $5-$10 million farm loan would have been large. Today we finance anywhere up to the $30-$50 million range.” BIE

It’s a little like that with exports. To the average citizen in a province like ours which sells such a significant portion of its resources, products and technology to others, it can feel a bit like I do when I watch my (sorry, their) shiny tail lights fade. After all, if what we dig up, manufacture and develop is so valuable, shouldn’t we maybe keep it?

Not on your life. If I balked at adding value to my first car and sending it on its way, I’d still be listening to eighttracks in a 1976 Thunderbird, getting 10 miles to the gallon and watching the odometer crack a million. Or more likely, standing at the side of the road with my thumb out. Not good. Letting go is healthy. And, as Alberta’s much-envied history of economic prosperity attests, it pays off.

If your goal is to explore the subject of exporting as it pertains to the economic landscape of this province, you’d be hard pressed to find a more qualified guide than John Cotton. He knows the terrain. So much so that this month, the Government of Alberta and the association of Canadian Manufactures and Exporters have selected him to receive the first-ever Alberta Export Leadership Award.

“The private sector is obviously indispensable to the growth of Alberta,” Cotton says, adding that its success drives the Alberta economy, which allows for economic growth and allows for the prosperity we have. “While this is true for Canada as a whole, it’s particularly true here. We’re very outward-looking. We’ve always realized that we had to sell our products and services beyond the boundaries of Alberta and beyond the boundaries of Canada, and that our success in exporting is essential to our future growth and prosperity.”

A native of Peterborough, Ontario, Cotton began working for the federal government in the area of intergovernmental relations pretty much the moment he graduated from university. But in 1982, the course of his life took an unforeseen turn, spurred by the unlikeliest of talismans. “I applied for a position with the Alberta government based on an ad I saw in the Globe and Mail,” he says. Cotton originally thought that he would come here for a few years, gain useful experience and go back to Ontario. But lucky for us, that last part never happened. “I spent 30 years with the Alberta government, because of the opportunities that presented themselves to me here, but also because of the culture of Alberta itself. I found it to be a very open society, very entrepreneurial, very ‘can do.’ I had no reason to ever go back to Ontario. And I now consider myself to be a trueblue Albertan.”

One of the opportunities that Cotton is referring to, one which he sees as a key step in the development of his career, was the chance to work out of the Alberta/Japan office – in Tokyo. “Japan at that time was a very growing, dynamic market. People thought it was going to surpass the United States, in the same way that China is now talked about, and I worked with a lot of Alberta companies looking to sell their products and services there.”

Cotton’s years in the Tokyo office gave him immeasurable experience working across a wide range of sectors from agriculture to energy, forestry, IT and environmental

services. It also afforded him a valuable education in living in a foreign country and understanding the dynamics of a foreign market. “Selling a product to someone in Japan or China or Mexico is different than selling it in Red Deer,” he says. “It’s still about sales and finding a quality product, but there’s a need to know your customer, to identify a good partner to work with and to understand the degree to which you have to adapt your product to meet the needs of a particular market.”

Working with Japan’s strong cultural traditions and very unique business practices taught Cotton a great deal.

“I saw a lot of companies come through our door. Many were successful, but many were not, and you could see that those who were had the open-mindedness to listen to the customer and to adapt the product, and also had the patience to build networks, build contacts and build trust.

That was a very valuable experience which really assisted me in the roles that came later with the Alberta government,” he says.

Upon returning home Cotton spent nearly a decade with Alberta Agriculture, initially in charge of their Asia group but quickly taking over their entire marketing group. He then transitioned to the energy and environmental sectors.

“The type of geology, the type of terrain and the type of climate that we have here has resulted in a lot of companies developing very unique technologies, products and services, particularly if you look at heavy oil and the tarsands,” he says. “Unlike some other parts of the world which have a much more conventional type of oil and gas industry, because of the challenges we face in Alberta and the entrepreneurial culture that exists here, I really saw how innovative our industry is. That’s why it was a real pleasure to work for that sector.”

In 2007, Cotton’s enthusiasm for this particular facet of the export industry found the perfect outlet in the Heavy Oil Alberta Project, or HOAP, a unified mission signifying the coming together of Alberta Economic Development, the Canadian Heavy Oil Association and the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources. “We recognized that Alberta had unique expertise when it came to heavy oil, and worked with industry in documenting it,” he says.

HOAP created a huge database of companies, technologies and services and developed extensive and targeted promotional materials for an extended series of promotional events in various markets across the globe.

Cotton explains that there are substantial reservoirs of oil around the world which haven’t up to this point made commercial or economic sense to exploit. But as oil prices rise, the more sophisticated and costly technologies required to get at them become more attractive. This, he says, is where Alberta is particularly well-positioned. “As conventional, easily exploited reserves begin to deplete, countries begin to look at reserves that are more complicated, such as heavier oil. It opens up an opportunity for Alberta because we’ve already been there and have a lot of expertise. That’s really what HOAP was about.” It was also about receiving the Premier’s Award for Excellence,

the first of two such awards for Cotton – his second was for spearheading the annual Global Petroleum Show the following year, a project similarly designed to enhance the profile of Alberta’s oil industry and serve as a concentrated networking and learning environment for companies interested in emerging petroleum markets.

When Cotton took on the job of assistant deputy minister for the province in 2009, he became very active in public advocacy work. “We thought that Alberta was being cast in a negative light regarding the environmental record,” he says. So, once again bringing government and industry together, he and his colleagues developed a very sophisticated advocacy program. “You need to get your message out, but you can’t wait until it’s an issue and just react. You need to get out in front and to engage the communities. People will decide for themselves, but when we’re talking about public policies it’s important that we base our discussions on what we know to be accurate.”

As much as John Cotton is a champion of Alberta enterprise and its place on the world stage, he’s just as bullish on its government. “The government here is very supportive of the private sector in Alberta. A lot of people see government’s role as that of a regulator, but by creating the right kind of business environment, it can be an impetus to the entrepreneurship and innovation that already exists here, encouraging expansion and encouraging exports,” he says.

“The Alberta government has done that very successfully.

There’s a lot of mutual respect between government and the private sector in this province. That’s something that I think is really worth noting.” People often think of government and industry as having an adversarial relationship, Cotton says, but he’s learned that government and industry working together can accomplish more in concert than they can alone.

“Government can play a supportive role when it comes to industry in the international arena. It can open doors and make it easier for a company to break into a particular market,” he says, adding that this is one of the many reasons he feels honoured to receive the Export Leadership Award.

“Because it’s not just about me, John Cotton. It’s about what I was able to do while I was in government. I think it’s a recognition of the role the Alberta government has played and all the people that have worked with me over the years. It’s a recognition of all those efforts, and the role the government plays in promoting exports and consistently supporting the export needs of Alberta companies.”

The leadership component of the award holds particular significance for Cotton at this stage in his career.

“When one’s talking about leadership, it’s not only about how you lead your organization, it’s about how you lead a cause, and it’s about the role you play in the larger community, too.” If you have leadership or management skills, he believes, you should try to utilize them as much as you can. “I’ve had the pleasure of working in the industry for so long in the area of helping with exports, and now that I’m only working part time I’m taking some of that broader skill set and using it for non-profit organizations.”

Today, Cotton lends his leadership and management expertise to a number of non-profit organizations like E4C, where he sits on the board as vice president. “They run the school and snack program in the inner city and the Kids in the Hall Bistro. They also provide low-income and transition housing and run the Head Start program for kids up in the northeast.” In addition, he is involved with the Rotary Club and the Alberta Charity Support network, a group of retired and semi-retired individuals who help charity organizations with leadership or management issues.

It seems that Cotton couldn’t be more pleased about his life’s work, or about picking up that portentous copy of the Globe and Mail on that chilly morning more than 30 years ago. “With any job, you want to be good at it, you want to have a passion. You want to believe that what you’re doing makes a difference,” he says. “We’re very fortunate with the quality of life we have here in Alberta. That’s because we live in a prosperous part of the world. And exports are a very key element of that prosperity. That’s something we should never lose sight of.” BIE

There is a way for corporations to build cash value using insurance – but it’s not for everybody.

ife insurance. It’s something we are familiar with in our personal lives, but many are not aware of the all the options life insurance provides for corporations.

Bill Harvey, an LSM Insurance consultant, says, “Small business owners of Canadian control corporations who require and are able to qualify for life insurance, may purchase a Universal Life policy inside their company.”

For personal life insurance, a Universal Life policy has a cash value that builds up over time. You can use it as a type of savings vehicle and gain access to the cash as required.

For corporations, the process is a little different. Harvey continues, “[Companies] can transfer some of their corporate surplus into a Universal Life policy to benefit from tax-deferred investment. They can, after a sizable cash value has accumulated, apply for a third-party line of credit. This can be used for a source of cash or income or for emergencies, use the fund for new business opportunities or pay for the cost of running the business. You can also use this to fund a buy-sell agreement between partners of the company.”

Sounds complicated? That’s because it is.

Fred Wing has many years’ experience advising corporations of all sizes on financial and insurance matters, and when it comes to corporate insurance policies that accumulate a cash value, he points out the pros, the cons and a word of caution.

“Revenue Canada will not allow you to purchase life insurance just as a tax shelter. There must be a need for life

insurance. The Life Insurance Act allows life insurance cash value to grow tax sheltered within the policy. This tax deferral is purely a secondary benefit,” Wing cautions.

“There are various ways in order for the corporation/shareholder can withdraw the accumulated monies that are in the life insurance contract. The key is to do such to minimize the taxation on the growth portion of the withdrawal.

During the accumulation period, it grows tax sheltered, and when the shareholder uses leveraging, the proceeds are taxfree and this loan will be re-paid from the death benefit. The balance of the death benefit is paid to the corporation, surviving partners or to the estate/family. ” So, how does it work?

“The policy is owned by the corporation,” Wing explains. “The beneficiary is the corporation. A loan is given and the death benefit pays off the loan. Anything left over will go to the corporation and then to the shareholder’s estate through the capital dividend account.”

The loan is key to the accumulation’s tax deferment.

“This concept gives the shareholders tax-free income because a loan is not classified as income,” Wing points out.

“Using this concept, the money coming into the corporation is essential tax free.” Speaking of taxes, the insurance premium on a policy of this type is not tax deductible, with one small exception. Premiums are deductible if the bank demands term life insurance on a loan.

Having solid backing for a loan that will be paid off with insurance money sounds like a great idea, but before you

call your advisor there are a few more things you need to know. This policy is not recommended for publically held companies, struggling businesses, or anyone lacking patience. This is not a policy for companies affected by multiple variables. For example, what if you bring on another partner?

What if you sell the company? “The shareholder must be very confident about their future,” says Wing. “The shareholder must understand this is not a short-term program. You can’t create a miracle of great cash flow in two to three years. We are talking about 10 years or greater.”

That being said, for large or small FRED WING. companies with solid sales, solid management, strong profits and with a confident, experienced leader at the helm, this policy could ensure cash flow during lean periods, provide the means for expansion, create capital to invest in new technology and more. However, not everyone is quick to champion this concept.

President and founder of Integrated Wealth Management, Andrew Ruhland, says these policies can be risky.

“Insurance products have some unique features that can be very powerful if the profile fits completely, Ruhland says, “but there are difficult-to-manage risks to investment performance for the cash accumuANDREW H. RUHLAND lations and big future risks from rising interest rates. Rising rates will cause a conservative bond-based investment portfolio within the policy to actually lose money. The result: a shrinking portfolio to borrow against and a rising cost of borrowing that nullifies a major feature of this strategy…even for the rare business owner who does fit the whole profile.”

At this point you may be thinking of another potential red flag. “If this is a viable option for my company, why haven’t I heard of it before?” Both experts weigh in on that question.

“It is not widely known,” Wing admits, and that is because shareholders generally rely on three core advisors: a bank, an accountant and a lawyer. “Each does their job without suggesting products outside of their expertise or industry.” So, you can’t expect your lawyer to talk to you about insurance any more than you could expect your insurance agent to discuss your legal corporate structure.

Unless your insurance advisor is a regular part of your financial advisement team, this product will likely fall through the cracks.

Ruhland agrees. “The number of clients for whom this

strategy actually does make sense is so incredibly small that these products are thoroughly understood by a commensurately small number of specialists who market them.”

The fact that these policies are not widely known leaves the path open for a bit of vulnerability. “If any strategy is marketed primarily based on its tax deduction or tax-sheltering features, then you should be very skeptical,” says Ruhland. “Quick [taxsaving] fixes that sound too good to be true frequently come back to haunt those who get into them impulsively.”

Should your company have a life insurance policy with an accumulation value? There are pros and cons to the policy, and it must be approached with a full understanding of the risks and the rewards. You must be willing to wait for many years to reap the benefits in terms of this loan with insurance as collateral concept, and you must pass away for the benefit to pay out. Remember, the bulk – if not all – of the death benefit goes into the loan. However, with the right advice and the right advisor, this policy could be a great boon for the right type of company.

For the corporations that are not the right fit, there are still plenty of options. Ruhland advises, “Individual pension plans carry far less tax risk, are easier to understand and much less costly to unwind in the future. Retaining the majority of retained earnings not required as operating capital in a tax-efficient equity portfolio within the corporation, and using a joint-last-to-die policy purchased personally could also be a viable strategy, depending on the circumstances.

A significant investment portfolio kept inside an active operating business or a holdco will cost substantially less to actively manage than the investment options inside most policies of this kind, and having an active manager also allows for greater flexibility, such as capital preservation when markets get rough.”

Wing’s final advice? Get good advice. “I encourage a shareholder who is paying all the bills to be the quarterback and surround themselves with people that have expertise in other areas. Shareholders should have advisors from each sector to provide them with financial advice since shareholders have the most risk in a company.

You may not have thought of your insurance agent as a financial advisor, but now that you know about one of many little-known policies, perhaps it’s time to see if an accumulation policy could work for you. BIE

ommunity Standards branch staff at the City of Edmonton are working collaboratively on a project to help educate city residents as to why they need to keep their properties clean. This spring, Edmonton City Council approved funding for the addition of five new Municipal Enforcement Officers with the goal of enhancing property standards enforcement effectiveness.

This enforcement addition is a critical component of our new Nuisance Abatement initiative, whereby peace officers will be raising awareness with property owners on their responsibilities in dealing with issues such as messy properties, deteriorat-

ing structures and run-down fences.

The goal of the initiative is to build and foster relationships among residents and municipal enforcement officers. As part of the Nuisance Abatement initiative, these officers will lend their support to the ‘Big Bin’ events this season by proactively inspecting surrounding residential neighbourhoods, educating citizens and informing the public of upcoming ‘Big Bin’ events.

Work is currently underway to develop tailored strategies geared towards assisting aging communities in need, and to increase proactive nuisance property enforcement levels city-wide. Community leagues are in

Through these types of connections, the City of Edmonton and the Community Standards branch hopes to build better relationships between Officers in the community, and increase awareness of Bylaw enforcement activities.

In addition to enhanced enforcement, the Capital City Clean Up program will be developing and launching a comprehensive public education campaign to educate citizens on the importance of maintaining their properties as well as the consequences for not. This education component of the Nuisance Abatement initiative will allow for the ongoing communication of bylaw requirements, will aid in establishing clear expectations for home owners and tenants, and will communicate consequences for non-compliance.

Although Robert’s first design has long since been phased out in favour of a more efficient drive system, the enthusiasm for creating efficient progressing cavity pump solutions has never wavered.

KUDU’s manufacturing facility is located in Calgary. A second manufacturing shop in Lloydminster assembles custom pumps and power units for heavy oil applications. The Lloydminster location will soon be expanded to include additional KUDU products. Using lean management techniques and guided by the Toyota Production System (TPS), KUDU is a prime example of a local company that works efficiently, minimizes waste, strives for excellence and produces quality products for use in and out of Canadian borders.

This single-minded focus on IMC had plenty to do with the competition, but not in a way you would expect. While analysis of the competition was completed in pursuit of IMC’s accounts, Leveille is happy to say, “We place a high value on respect for our competitors. We always speak highly of them and reach out to establish personal contact. When opportunity and circumstances dictate, we send referrals to them.”

This gracious thinking, which is as unique as the characters turned out by IMC, is partly why the costume giant has been an international success for over 25 years. Another reason is because IMC provides a full range of services for their clients, from costume design to maintenance, cleaning and repair. IMC also provides inflatables, plush toys, promotional products and animatronic character displays.

NOVA Chemicals is committed to challenging and improving their industry. “In Eastern Canada, we are upgrading our Corunna facility, enabling it to utilize up to 100 per cent natural gas liquids feedstock,” explains Thomson. “In December 2013, we reached a key milestone in the project and were the first mover of Marcellus-based ethane – with our Corunna facility being the first to receive and begin cracking ethane supplied from the Marcellus Shale basin as a routine component in our feedstock diet.”

In Western Canada, NOVA Chemicals has continuously innovated through diversification of their feedstock slate as well, reducing dependence on natural gas from border flows. “We were the first to recover petrochemical feedstock in the form of ethane from oilsands upgrading in Alberta, through our agreement with Williams Energy,” says Thomson. The company is also accessing ethane from oil-based shale development in North Dakota to bring north across the U.S. border via the Vantage pipeline, as well as accessing ethane from field sources not associated with border flows.

Active community engagement is key for NOVA Chemicals. “We value the safety and well-being of our communities and the environment, and work collaboratively to provide open dialogue and outreach. MSCAN develops and sells leading-edge lab bench solutions for printed circuit board engineers and antenna engineers to test electromagnetic emissions; reducing if not eliminating the need for an anechoic chamber. These solutions are based on patented fast very-near-field magnetic measurement techniques.

The company enables accelerated time-to-market for PCB engineers, antenna designers and wireless engineers. EMSCAN has thus helped transform the design process for manufacturers of cellular, Wi-Fi, RFID, military, consumer electronics, automotive, semiconductor and medical devices.

“I was recruited to turn around the company,” says CEO Stéphane Attal. He proceeded to meet the challenge with a mind full of great ideas, relentless drive and unbridled enthusiasm. “I took on the job when I saw that the fundamentals were outstanding: a great team and very innovative patented products for a market large enough to sustain aggressive growth.”

“EMSCAN was rebuilt from the ground up; a massive overhaul,” explains Attal. “The products were great, but they needed to be brought to the market’s and end-user’s attention to generate revenue. Solid sales and marketing strategies were required first.

EMSCAN was rebranded, product packaging was redesigned, a new attractive and informative website was developed, a corporate brochure and data sheets were created and we made sure it was easy for suppliers and clients to communicate with us. Then we embarked on getting EMSCAN known through trade shows, technical seminars, webinars, articles, social media and more.”

But he didn’t stop there.

“With sales and marketing in place, it was time to develop new products. EMSCAN invests heavily in research and development to deliver leading-edge solutions, in excess of 40 per cent in 2010 and around 20 per cent in 2014,” Attal continues. “In parallel, EMSCAN’s offices were redesigned to provide an outstanding work environment and to foster cooperation and innovation. EMSCAN’s IT was upgraded with Microsoft 365 and Dynamics CRM. More importantly a ‘team’ was forged; a focus on quality and on customer care was elevated to a mantra level, and EMSCAN invested and continues to invest in employee training and recognition.”

That was four years ago. Today the company is thriving corporately and among its peers. “We are elated and grateful that EMSCAN’s team efforts have been recognized by others,” says Attal of the Export Award nomination.

ure Technologies was founded in 1998 and is on a mission to provide owners of critical pipelines with innovative management solutions that prevent failures, reduce capital expenditure and lost revenue, and contribute to a sustainable future. “We are renowned for our engineering and technical expertise, client-first approach and ability to develop innovative solutions that solve specific issues,” says Pure Technologies chairman, Jamie Paulson.

“Throughout our history, we have constantly challenged the status quo in this industry by developing new solutions to assess and manage critical infrastructure,” explains Paulson. “Our primary industry, municipal water and waste-water pipelines, has seen most of this innovation. Previously, there was no way to assess large-diameter pipelines without taking them out of service, which affected a huge number of end users. These assets were also not designed to be inspected, which created a need for solutions that met the difficult operational requirements.”

After identifying this challenge, Pure Technologies developed technologies to assess the condition of live pipelines. This represented a major step in the industry, as critical pipelines could now be assessed for structural damage without affecting service. This allowed operators to prevent pipes from failing and renew assets selectively in favour of replacing them entirely.

That was just one of the ways Pure Technologies has changed the industry. They also had the foresight to realize the majority of large-diameter water and waste-water pipelines constructed many decades ago were close to the end of their serviceable life.

By providing solutions that help operators identify areas on pipelines that are most in need of repair, the company helped shift utilities toward proactive management, which contributes to environmental sustainability and fiscal responsibility on the part of operators.

Pure’s solutions have now been enhanced and applied to the oil and gas industry to verify containment as part of integrity management programs, which is a growing focus of the business.

ou’ve seen their work; those iconic sculptures that characterize Las Vegas’ massive hotels, dimensional signage with 3D images, the statues in Disneyland, intricately detailed architectural finishes and lifelike displays in museums. As you pause to admire the realism and fine detail, did you ever stop to wonder who was behind it all?

Streamline Automation is a powerhouse in the automated 3D carving industry, and their focus and drive has seen the company rise from idea to international success in just 14 short years. With applications for 3D carving in virtually every industry including arts, automotive, construction, medical and hospitality, Streamline supports an impressive client list on every continent and in dozens of countries worldwide.

While the co-founders were surprised at their nomination, Groen had to admit, “It made sense. We export everything we make!” Groen and Lehman thank their incredible staff who have helped them achieve this industry recognition.

ithout educational institutions developing the bright minds of Alberta’s export leaders, the export industry would not thrive. Dr. Alex Zahavich, vice president of corporate development and applied research at SAIT Polytechnic explains, “The vice president, corporate development and applied research, has the responsibility of developing and executing on opportunities, locally and globally, outside of SAIT’s core business of grant-funded education. This includes providing learning opportunities for individuals developing their careers through continuing education at SAIT or at a distance. As well, it involves meeting the training needs of corporate clients and other institutional partners. In addition, the division meets the needs of industry through applied research and innovation services, which assists in the development of products and processes while providing students the unique opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills through these industry-led projects.”

Alberta’s post-secondary education system is critical in developing the competencies that students will need in order to be prepared for careers in today’s global marketplace. A wide variety of academic and industry-based training programs are available in Alberta’s post-secondary institutions to support growth in this area. For instance, supply chain management, both domestic and international, is taught in many of Alberta’s post-secondary institutions.

SAIT does more than provide an educational link in the export chain. SAIT exports a valuable commodity as well. “For more than 20 years, SAIT has been a significant exporter of educational services to labour markets around the world,” says Dr. Zahavich. “In particular, SAIT has been involved in developing energy-based educational training programs and facilities across the globe.

This includes SAIT’s workforce nationalization training programs, which were the basis of SAIT’s submission for an Alberta Export award. These programs have been offered to oil and gas industries based in many different countries, including Angola, Kazakhstan, Australia, Trinidad and Tobago, Syria, Libya and Venezuela.”

SAIT is pleased to be recognized with a nomination for its efforts in workforce nationalization and wishes to thank the Province of Alberta, the Government of Canada and, most important, its industry and institutional partners for the years of continued support.

reen Prairie International Inc. embodies the sentiment “necessity is the mother of invention.” Over his career, John Van Hierden, company founder and president, applies persistent creativity until he finds solutions to problems facing the company.

Located near Lethbridge, Alberta, Green Prairie is a wholesale supplier of forage hay products, primarily timothy and alfalfa. The company’s main markets are in Asia and the Middle East.

At its beginning, the hay exporting industry was faced with high shipping costs. Technology at the time only allowed shipping eight tonnes in a container with shipping costs priced per container and not by weight. With the industry tackling this problem, Green Prairie invented and patented a machine to compress bales to allow 26 tonnes to fit into a container and to improve production from four bales to 12 bales per minute. Another feature of the machine was a finished bale slicer for production of smaller packages that are easily handled by Green Prairie’s export customers. This new machine also allowed farmers to bale hay into large 4x4x8 bales instead of the typical small square bales.

This change introduced efficiencies in baling and transportation.

The company sold the patent to an Alberta manufacturer and this machine became the world’s top selling hay press, used on every continent. After this success Green Prairie worked with the manufacturer to design and build another press that produces a large 450kg package, now one of the industry’s most popular packages.

Today Green Prairie is in another growth stage, increasing production capacity and introducing to Canada a new production line to dehydrate and dry long-fibre hay for its export markets.

Last year Green Prairie International Inc. celebrated their 25th anniversary and was recognized as an industry leader with a Dale Carnegie award. Even so, the Export Award nomination still managed to catch Van Hierden by surprise. “It’s a great thing,” says the company founder. “I am proud to be part of the growth in Canada. I really am thankful for all the staff. I have great support and a great attitude from our team. Our success comes from the entire team working together.”

“My entire career has been focused on growing high-tech companies through aggressive worldwide business strategies,” says CEO Stéphane Attal. “On the sales side, I first went to visit every sales channel of EMSCAN (manufacturer’s representatives in the U.S. and distributors overseas) and as many customers as possible worldwide to listen to what they liked and disliked about EMSCAN. Then the team went on to fix everything that needed fixing.

The most critical action item was the development of a ready-towoo demonstration kit, which required a massive investment in equipment but ensured that every demonstration by our sales team was successful each time. I then recruited and/or replaced sales partners globally in every market where there was a need for our products; this continues every year to make sure sales channels are qualified and passionate about selling EMSCAN. I also introduced annual sales meetings for all the sales channels in the three main regions (North and South America, Europe/ Middle-East/Africa and Asia/Pacific) to reward, motivate, inform and train our sales partners.

We then became a partner of Agilent (soon Keysight Technologies); EMSCAN is thus benefiting from the reputation and the marketing might of the largest electronic test and measurement manufacturer in the world. Finally, manufacturing was outsourced to help EMSCAN focus its resources and attention on what was critical to its success.”

In 2010, EMSCAN received the Frost and Sullivan Best Practices Award for Global RF and EMC Measurement Technologies/Customer Value Enhancement. EMSCAN is elated to be nominated for an Export Award in 2014.

xtreme Telematics Corp. (ETC) is an expert in advanced technology for the oilfield.

“ETC is known for building low power, wide temperature range, hazardous locations approved controls and sensors for the oil and gas industry,” explains president and CEO Mark Scantlebury. ETC’s product line includes a waste-reducing chemical injection system, a reliable plunger lift controller and sensor, solar panels and more.

“We knew that to grow the company, we needed to increase the number of products we sold, diversify into other vertical markets and expand geographically,” Scantlebury continues. “We really focused on solidifying our brand here in Canada first. After we rebranded and started taking over the Canadian market, we focused on rebuilding our main product for a broader market. We designed a second-generation controller and designed it to be certified to an international standard so it could be sold in more markets. This certification, combined with a more cost-effective configuration, allowed us to enter the U.S. market. During the same period, we designed a sensor to complement our controller.

It was also more rugged and reliable than anything on the market. Armed with these products, we made a concentrated push into the U.S. The fact that we have a number of challenges locally with cold temperatures, low sunlight and strict regulations really helps us to build products that can run anywhere in the world.”

With a successful push into the American marketplace, ETC is looking forward to expanding their team, adding additional products and pursuing ISO 9001 certification. Here at home, the energetic company contributes to different charitable causes each year, such as adopting a family at Christmas, supporting the women’s shelter and participating in Movember.

“The success of ETC is truly a team effort,” concludes Scantlebury. “We have amazing people in every area of the business including operations, sales/marketing and technology. None of the growth we are seeing would be possible without our amazing corporate culture and the fact that everyone has bought in and is pulling in the same direction.”

A progressive company, Hunter Well Science develops software to support their products and creates customized parts when applicable.

CEO and company president Lane D. Roberts harboured a vision to deliver to the global industry a new generation of technologies. “The best way to fulfil this vision was to build a company totally focused on it,” says Roberts. He did just that, founding Hunter Well Science in November 2009.

“The industry up to that point had relied on electronics that required component level repair after exposure to harsh downhole environments,” explains Roberts. “Our change was to fully test complete boards that could be plugged in and simply replaced without expensive troubleshooting. The number of different types of electronic boards typically required for inventory numbered in the hundreds to support this technology. Another industry change we created was to move much of the design into firmware, allowing us to standardize our electronic boards.

We now have five different boards ready for programming and overnight global delivery. Much of the top-tier technology was only available from multinational service companies. Our top-tier technologies are made available to service companies located regionally across the world.”

Hunter Well Science is a relatively small company with less than 30 employees and just over 30 international clients, but they are making a big impact at home and overseas; and not just for their outstanding technology. “We support a technical college (Haiti Arise) constructed by a charity organization in Haiti. We are a company made up of technical people and Haiti Arise seeks to deliver technical skills to a nation desperately short of these types of skills,” says Roberts.

As a small and new company, the Export Award nomination came as a surprise for Hunter Well Science, but as they know they have carved out a unique position in the global market, Hunter Well Science is pleased and grateful to be recognized in this way.

Charles Ma

C

harles Ma is the International Business Studies Award winner.

Ma is a fourth-year bachelor of commerce student at MacEwan University. He took part in the inaugural MacEwan University International Trade Simulation (ITS). Competing against five teams, Ma and his business partner secured the (simulated) trades and deals that gained them first place and the coveted ITS Best Company Award.

Ma also participated in MacEwan University’s Florianopolis, Brazil field study. “It was an exciting, unique and nerve-racking adventure,” laughs Ma. “The trip meant working in several groups alongside Federal University of Santa Catarina students. We developed a corporate education strategy for the CERTI Foundation – a business incubator for technology and market innovations in Brazil. Additionally, we were given the opportunity to become junior consultants for a startup technology company called, Nanovetores (that specialized in nanotechnology). Our task was to research the logistics of expansion and development into North America, which led to collaborative help from Canadian business incubator, TEC Edmonton.

Following his experience in Brazil, Ma was thrilled to be accepted into the exchange program between MacEwan University and Switzerland’s Lucerne University, where Ma will complete his international management and economics major during the winter 2014 term.

“I am steadfast in contributing to the international business and trade industry that supports our global economy,” says Ma. “After graduation, I plan to attend law school in Canada. I wanted to create experiences and memories that I could not only look back on, but also look forward to as well. MacEwan University created the environment and offered the opportunity in order to make that happen. My friends and family also played a pivotal role in supporting and encouraging me to pursue my career and life goals – I definitely didn’t get to where I am now on my own.”

An avid tennis player, Ma plans to capitalize on the opportunity to attend the Roland Garros tournament (French Open) in Paris, and will also be volunteering his time for the upcoming Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto when he returns from Switzerland.

He hopes that his next big international experience will be participating in Alberta Abroad’s Externship Program next summer.

John Cotton

J

ohn Cotton, senior affiliate with Ian Murray and Company (IMC), has been nominated for an Export Award due to his 30-plus years of government work in the field of international relations; a nomination, Cotton feels, is ironic. “I thought it was important to recognize the work of our exporters. I was on the founding committee for the Alberta Export Awards,” says Cotton.

“Now I’ve been nominated for one!”

The journey behind the nomination started in 1982 when Cotton took a job in federal/provincial relations. When an opening came up in international relations, Cotton was ready. “I had an interest in that area and had training for it. This was an opportunity to build on that.”

For over three decades Cotton worked tirelessly, collaborating with and advising Alberta’s many industries to work with the government in making Alberta an export leader. “We developed sophisticated advocacy programs for the energy industry to promote an accurate picture of our oilsands development,” says Cotton of one of the many initiatives he spearheaded. “Image is important when looking for new markets.

“I think through a career with the Alberta government, we have always looked for innovative ways to work with associations to promote the industry internationally. Government has an important role to play in helping companies take advantage of opportunities in international markets. The quality of life Albertans enjoy is because of our ability to export our products and services worldwide.”

Retiring from that position hasn’t stopped Cotton from international pursuits. He enjoyed five years in Japan, working in the Alberta trade office, and now with IMC continues to promote the business interests of the company’s clients. Cotton enjoys contributing to the United Way, is a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton, is the vice president of E4C and sits on the advisory committee for the business program at Grant MacEwan, among many other altruistic pursuits.

“I was quite shocked by the nomination but also honoured that people I worked with throughout the years felt that way about my involvement in the industry,” smiles Cotton. He would like to thank Patricia Glen and Doug McNeil from the Export Awards committee, his past and present colleagues, and all those who supported him over the years.

Canada’s successful business aviation community to gather at CBAA convention

anada’s business aviation community takes flight in Edmonton this June, as hundreds of operators, flight managers, exhibitors and aircraft manufacturers attend the annual Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA) Convention and Exhibit, June 17-19, 2014.

“Alberta is a key market for business aviation, and we are delighted by the enthusiastic support we have received from the local community,” says CBAA’s president and CEO, Rudy Toering. “For growing numbers of Alberta companies, business aviation has become a necessary and competitive corporate tool.”

Business aviation has virtually a 0 per cent accident rate, outperforming all other types, including commercial scheduled service. That is due to the attention our sector takes to assure the safety of the high profile personnel we carry. Numerous major corporations make the use of their corporate aircraft a condition of employment to protect their top leaders. Even for vacations, boards will insist that the corporate aircraft be used both for safety reasons as well as access to their top leaders.

For a lot of companies, once they do their due diligence, they see that the cost of flying business aviation is more than compensated by the exponential increase in time and productivity savings that it provides.

“There is a wide range of possibilities for companies who are considering business aviation,” says Rudy. “They can charter one-off flights, or they can lease an aircraft with the crew and maintenance provided. Some own and operate a single aircraft, while others have multiple aircraft run by internal corporate flight departments. Other

companies work with a flight management company to look after their aircraft. In the world of business aviation, there is always a customizable and flexible option to ensure that companies get exactly the level of service they need.”

The wealth of choices extends to the aircraft themselves, many of which will be on display at the CBAA convention.

While U.S. and international statistics demonstrate the economic value of business aviation, there has been no serious analysis of the Canadian market, an issue being rectified by CBAA. “We are currently working on a Business Aviation Economic Impact study,” says Toering. “Our sector is one of those hidden catalysts of growth, and we hope to shortly have the data to show the straight line between business aviation and economic opportunity.”

40-year anniversary can come in different shapes and sizes. While there’s always a sense of accomplishment, a celebration of obligations met and challenges overcome, there can also be a sense of the predictable. Same old, same old. But for the CBM Office Automation team, it feels less like a

traditional anniversary and more like a 40th honeymoon. While there’s certainly plenty to celebrate, when they blow out the candles this month, the CBM team won’t be standing still and facing the past. You can bet they’ll be slapping backs, shaking hands and looking to the future – together.

Today, CBM is known for providing strong, costeffective, process-driven office automation services and solutions for all types of businesses, from ambitious startups to venerable Alberta icons such as the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. “We’ve had wonderful success, growing by about 20 per cent each year,” says company president Glenn Mudryk, a decidedly affable boss with a warm smile. “Now our machines average 15,000,000 pages a month.”

That’s a lot of pages, but if you trace 20 per cent annual growth back far enough, say 40 years, you end up at a pretty humble starting point. “My dad started Custom Business Machines in the basement of our house in 1974,” Mudryk says. Keep in mind that back then, Charles Lindberg was still alive but Christian Bale had yet to be, and business machines pretty much took the form of typewriters. These were large metal machines with levers, which when pressed would cause other levers to leap forward and strike a waiting piece of paper, depositing a letter-shaped smear of ink directly onto it. It was a different time.

“I didn’t have any illusions about getting involved in the business back then,” Mudryk says. “I just

couldn’t see myself running around carrying a tool kit with my mom being my secretary.” All that changed when he emerged from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) engineering program and realized he had something to contribute. “I’m not near the tradesman my dad was, so I took a different direction, building the business and introducing new technology.”

Keeping up with technology was key, of course, as today the only place you’re likely to see a typewriter is on an episode of Mad Men. Custom Business Machines became CBM Office Automation, typewriters became fax machines, which gave way to photocopiers and printers. “We’ve evolved from an office equipment company to a ‘managed print’ company,” Mudryk says. “The tool has become a whole lot more than a copier. In fact, probably less than 20 per cent of our volume is copying now. People print to a copier, or they’re scanning from it and getting PDF’s into their email for filing purposes, but nobody really makes copies any more. The sharing of information is becoming more and more digital. In fact, we’re working on managing our major accounts to zero print.”

A company that sells, leases and services copiers and printers wants their clients to go paperless? “It sounds really weird for a print company to say, because currently we make most or our money on print.

But I think my responsibility as an owner of this company is to provide for its longevity outside of me. Paper will become less common as more information is shared electronically, so helping businesses manage to zero print will help us to find a way to make money with that through managing tablets or electronic information or off-site storage – things that fall into the IT space. Not only will we be saving trees and saving our clients’ money, but we’ll be providing a revenue source for the longevity of the company.” Mudryk knows that no matter what types of machines a business uses to produce data in a physical form or to collect, transfer and store it, that business will always need experts to manage them.

While being experts in the evolution and implementation of business technology is a huge part of CBM’s 40-year success, for Mudryk, it’s not the key ingredient.

“We’ve got great technology, that’s what leads the way; but what makes us unique is our people.” Mudryk has managed to build a successful company by focusing on the people and not just the technology. He ensures they feel and work like a team, and he encourages them to take time for their hobbies and their home life. “We work to live, not the other way around. That’s who we are,” says the guitar-playing businessman whose band just recorded their second album of original music. “It’s important to have a balance.”

the entire staff go-karting. Team outings like this are common at CBM. “We haven’t had anyone leave this company in five years. All we’ve done is add. Sean, one of our sales guys who’s been here eight years, left and went to London. Followed a girl over there, got married, brought her back and came back to work here. How cool is that?” This sounds personal, because it is personal. That’s CBM. They honestly care about the lives of their people.

According to Mudryk, the same accountability the company gives to their people internally transfers to their clients. “We pride ourselves on problem resolution and creative solutions for our customers. We sell very differently than our competition. We don’t typically propose solutions early on in the process. We’re known to really slow down the sale and ask, ‘why do you want this?’ Especially with a new client, we’ll E s t a t e

spend 90 to 180 days to learn their business process and see what we can bring to it. If I can understand your business better, then chances are I’ll keep you as a client.”

Of course, if it isn’t obvious by now, when Mudryk says ‘I’, he almost always means ‘we’, because when it comes to CBM Office Automation, they’re practically the same thing. “Gary Reich is a partner in the company, as is Neil Sumaru. He’s brought the process piece to the business. I’m great at having an idea, Gary’s great at seeing it through, making sure it gets done. That’s his role. Neil manages our sales department. He brings a lot of tech savvy to the business, especially with some of these new ideas that we’re chasing.”

These new ideas have ushered in a whole new division to the CBM team: the IT services division.

“Vince Byblow is leading and building that, and is a partner in the company as well,” says Mudryk. “That’s exciting. IT has been a great success. We’re exceeding our goals and we expect to continue to grow at a rapid rate. It’s a natural fit.”

However, the most natural fit of all is that felt by each

PPM: A World Leader in Corporate Security Continues to Innovate

et me introduce you to PPM, an Edmonton-based software company that develops, maintains and delivers leading edge corporate security software to clients around the world, including social media giants, diamond mines, and famous cultural landmarks.

PPM was established 25 years ago by Denis O’Sullivan, a former detective with the Irish police force who was, at the time, a corporate security advisor for the City of Edmonton.

Her father’s background in law enforcement was a good fit, as company president and co-CEO Elaine O’Sullivan explains.

“Think of a corporate security department as somewhat like a police department. They are responsible for protecting their organization’s assets, including their people, property and information. In essence, they are responsible for preventing incidents, and that’s everything from the most common, like laptop theft, fraud, and workplace violence, to those that make headlines like a teenager stowing away in a wheel well of an airplane, a terrorist act or the theft of credit card records from a retailer.”

The consequences of any incident can be great and include direct financial loss, work disruption and litigation. The obvious objective is to prevent incidents, but how? Much of the solution lies in PPM’s specialty: the effective documentation, analysis and investigation of incidents.

Back in the mid-’80s, dealing with hundreds and thousands of incident records was an almost overwhelming task.

“In much the same way as you might envision a police station back in the day with rows upon rows of filing cabinets full of incident reports, in corporate security it really was just paper records. It was challenging to answer quick questions, next to impossible to identify trends and annual reports took weeks to prepare,” O’Sullivan explains. The founders of PPM saw a need to take that information, put it into a computer and make it accessible. They dubbed their software “the new intelligence” and it was to change the face of corporate security forever.

Today, PPM is a world leader in what they do and has successfully transitioned their software from DOS to Windows, from a bleeding edge solution to a mission critical tool and from local installations to the cloud. By enabling the effective documentation, analysis, and reporting of security events, their clients make informed decisions that prevent incidents, protect assets, and mitigate risk, O’Sullivan says. “Incidents happen. An employee is being threatened by a colleague, or an employee at a remote location has activated a panic alarm.

Maybe a competitor has gained access to proprietary company research, or the CEOs office door was left unlocked and his laptop is missing. Accusations of negligence or of inadequate security are countered by documented evidence and the deployment of effective security safeguards is facilitated by statistics that demonstrate what’s needed — and where.”

tions veer into the front-end where the company’s dispatching software now helps organizations respond to incidents, still collecting data but also managing real-time resources and ensuring the fastest possible response from the closest security officer.

O’Sullivan notes, “While we’re not Google and can’t offer napping pods and slides, we do have a foosball table and a TV/ Xbox rec room, we host monthly treat days where each department gets to arrange a surprise, and we have a really neat

new beverage system from Planet Coffee that I’m still getting thank you’s for two months after its installation.”

In their new space, PPM also wanted to take advantage of technology to improve efficiency, effectiveness and of course, collaboration. Think meeting rooms that can be booked on devices by each door, individuals being able to remote into their desktops from every meeting room, and a board room that features an 80” TV on one wall and a high definition projector on the other. “We even needed to transition from an antiquated phone system to a new one. Complete Communications helped us select and implement our new VoIP system and are now working with us on a new video conferencing solution.”

Lehmann Plumbing Celebrates 50 Years of Growth and Gives Thanks

T

he year was 1954. Bernie Lehmann was leaving post-war Germany to build a life for himself in Canada, bringing an industrious work ethic that would serve him well. For the next 10 years he put in long hours, bringing his work ethic to bear on job after job for someone else’s company, someone else’s dream. Consequently it didn’t take him long to realize that if he was going to work that hard, he might as well work for himself and his own dream. In 1964, he packed up his tools, rolled up his sleeves and started B. Lehmann Plumbing Heating and Gas Fitting Ltd. Taking the reins after his father’s retirement, Rick Lehmann now carries on his father’s proud heritage. When Rick speaks about those early days, you can hear the unmistakable tone of a son’s pride. “My father had a few employees, and he would go to the site hours before everyone else. He’d be there at six digging trenches and getting everything ready for them so he could minimize time spent and earn some money on the project. My father was definitely a hands-on owner.”

Rick wears the work ethic of his father comfortable and confidently, with the direct, steady gaze of a man you can trust.

“When I graduated from high school in 1977, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. My dad said, ‘you might as well come and work for me.’ And I never left.”

In the mid ’80s, a back injury meant that Rick had to take a break from working in the field. This gave him the chance

to work in the office, a challenge he took on with enthusiasm.

“At that time, we started to go after new clientele. My father was looking towards retirement, which happened in 1988. I started bidding contracts all over the city.” Rick and his father watched their sales volume nearly double annually for the next four years. “Initially, I was the estimator, project manager and purchaser, but eventually there just weren’t enough hours in the

day for me to do it all. Consequently, our manpower grew with our sales volume. In 1996 we moved to our current location and four years later, we expanded and separated our service side into its own entity.”

Rick also describes the vast array of work that Lehmann Plumbing takes on. “As mechanical contractors, we work in all types of construction, including commercial, light industrial and renovations. Our specialty is definitely design work, where we work with clients, engineers, other trades and developers to produce a product that saves everyone time and money. We also work with a host of sub-trades that complement us, including HVAC, sprinkler, insulation, controls, and engineering firms.”

Lehmann Plumbing also specializes in boiler installation and maintenance, as well as hydronic in-floor heating systems. “On the service side, we provide 24-hour service for residential and commercial repairs as well as whatever maintenance someone might need.” If it is two in the morning on a Sunday and you have a flood from a ruptured water line, a quick call to Lehmann Plumbing Services will get the job done.

Rick emphasizes the safety component of the company.

“Safety is also very important at Lehmann Plumbing. We have our COR certification and hold safety in the highest regard on the job site.”

Lehmann Plumbing is proud to encompass a list of projects, including churches, office/warehouses, multi-residential walkups, strip mall development, and public sector work projects for the City of Edmonton, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, and the Alberta government. They have also been very busy with renovations in the downtown core. “We do everything from $500 service work to multi-million dollar mechanical projects, but ultimately our goal in the midst of all this is to bring quality and excellence to the work that we do. By nature, construction isn’t a perfect science, so we’re always working to efficiently handle any circumstances that may come up, as well as lending a hand to a solution that will satisfy everyone. To put it simply, we just like to get

things done. We’ve been doing this now for 50 years and we are still here because we have always emphasized taking care of our clients.

Rick offers a special kind of gratitude to one man in particular, his father. “He gave me my start, and I’m very thankful for that.

The human component has always been important to Rick.

My faith has helped me as a father, as a husband and as an employer.” He and his wife Marietta have always used the company’s success to give back in generous and charitable ways to non-profit organizations locally and abroad. “This is a way for my wife and me to honour God by giving back in tangible ways to the community.”

T

here’s a legitimate Canadian oil crisis, according to Edmonton’s Andrew Leach, and some people (especially some media) are sidetracked about doing anything about it.

“Waiting for Obama” has become an almost ludicrous distraction and a media-favourite diversion. It is a juicy hot topic, especially since the mid-April White House announcement that “waiting for Obama” will continue for the rest of 2014 because the American president has again decided not to decide about the contentious Keystone XL pipeline, which would gush oilsands products from Alberta to the American Gulf Coast.

The urgent warning from Leach, the outspoken and blunt Enbridge professor of energy policy at the University of Alberta, where he teaches courses on energy markets, energy investments and environmental policy, is strategizing beyond Keystone.

“Look! If we take the Canadian oil industry at their word,

they are targeting production of nearly six million barrels a day.

There’s no doubt that Keystone is important, but even if it was up and operational, on a good day it could handle only 700,000 barrels a day. Clearly the industry knows that, while Keystone is a legitimately big piece of the puzzle, with or without Keystone, the industry must be (and probably already is) making plans about several options for getting oil sands product to market,” snaps the fiercely knowledgeable Leach.

Only a fifth of the world’s oil reserves are accessible to private-sector investment. Alberta has proven oil reserves of 170 billion barrels consisting of bitumen (about 168 billion barrels) and conventional crude oil (1.7 billion barrels). A staggering 55 per cent of all Canadian crude production is from the Alberta oilsands.

“The pipeline has been studied long and hard,” Wall says.

“It will create thousands of jobs on both sides of the border, it offers a safe and efficient method of moving large volumes of oil, and, according to a long, detailed environmental assessment by the American State Department, Keystone will not contribute to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

“Approval of the project is critical to the successful transport of other commodities in Saskatchewan. Grain, potash, and other commodities suffer every day the Keystone XL pipeline is not being built,” the premier explains.

“These politically motivated decisions are hurting the Canadian economy, the U.S. economy and our ability to develop new markets and support North America energy sustainability. The United States needs to quit wavering and make a decision based on the facts, which support the construction of Keystone. The delays represent a major blow to the energy industry in Saskatchewan and in Canada and will place unnecessary strain on relations with our largest trading partner,” warns the premier.

Leach is a loud and consistent voice, cautioning that the colossal and controversial $5.4-billion (U.S.) pipeline must not be con-

sidered the proverbial “eggs in one basket” or the be-all and end-all of Alberta’s or Canada’s oil strategy.

He also mentions that the American push for energy selfsufficiency sometimes triggers fears of a U.S. that will no longer need Canadian oil, causing Canada to confront an economic catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. Most agree that kind of a scenario is not likely for at least a couple of generations, if at all, since the North American culture and lifestyle are so heavily reliant on fossil fuels.

Leach shrugs that it’s all usually bluster.

“Despite much talk about alternative and renewable energies, the fact remains that the U.S. is and will remain Canada’s largest oil market, and is going to continue importing significant amounts of crude oil for many years. But the worst case scenario? If the Americans do say ‘no’ to Keystone? We have to remember that Canada has three coasts and that Canada will get the oil to world markets,” he says with confidence.

There are billions of dollars at stake in the Enbridge pipeline that would link the oilsands with a tanker port on the coast of British Columbia and the lucrative oil markets of Asia and India. The $6-billion project would allow land-locked Alberta to expand its customer base beyond the U.S., where the going rate is up to $8 less per barrel because there is no buyer competition.

Analysts and industry experts warn that the messy gauntlet of the Canadian review and approval hoops that Gateway would have to jump through before any oil actually starts flowing may be even more frustrating and discouraging than Keystone continues to be.

Key clauses and terms laid out in the joint review panel’s conditional approval of Gateway and the almost guaranteed court challenges by First Nations, blockades along the pipeline route between Edmonton and Kitimat, B.C. and rallies in major cities during the run-up to a federal election that will be called by Stephen Harper before October 2015, make gung-ho government support for Gateway dicey, at best.

If laid end-to-end, Canada’s existing oil and natural gas pipelines would circle the earth 2.5 times; and yet this still isn’t enough capacity to accommodate the rapid growth of the oilsands. Midstream companies, like TransCanada, Kinder Morgan, and Enbridge plan to add 3.1 million barrels of daily pipeline capacity – almost double today’s level – over the next decade just to keep up.

And then there’s rail. Some insiders suggest it may just be western oil’s most desirable option.

Rail is already making a significant dent in getting Alberta crude to market. Recent statists show that in 2008, less than 10,000 carloads of crude oil moved by rail. Last year there were more than 400,000 carloads and the logs are steadily increasing.

According to some specific estimates, just Canadian National Railway’s crude shipments will triple to 300,000 barrels per day by 2015, totaling about eight per cent of the company’s revenues. If that kind of traffic continues, as many experts suggest it will, it would mean that by next year more than 10 per cent of

Canada’s daily crude production will be shipped by just one of Canada’s two major railways.

With the robust oil industry forecast of increasing production, the frustrations of waiting for Obama and (best case scenario) having Keystone to send no-competition and devalued Canadian oil to the U.S., the 50/50 odds for Northern Gateway, the proposed tripling of capacity for Trans Mountain or the surging loads hauled to BC by rail to grow new markets in Asia and India, as Edmonton’s Andrew Leach says with positivity and urgency: “Something has to happen. THE IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE

M

y father was raised on a farm and introduced me to the concept and realities of agriculture when I was a young boy. Stories of my father’s upbringing, along with my business, travel and personal experiences, have taught me to recognize and appreciate the value of agriculture.

I recently welcomed a young, energetic communications and marketing coordinator to the Edmonton Chamber team.

Tatianna Lazowski grew up on a farm northeast of Edmonton and has a passion for agriculture. Due to her background, she understands its importance and supports the significant role it plays in our daily lives.

Here’s what she has to say: Our great city has proven to be a vibrant, thriving community, providing us with every opportunity for a fantastic quality of life. However, we tend to take for granted the availability of a basic, essential need: the food on our tables. We should regularly remind ourselves to “tip our hats” to our rural neighbours for their incredible efforts and dedication to the agricultural industry.

In proportion to the global population, the number of farmers and ranchers is extremely small, yet they are responsible for sustaining the world’s population. Agriculture is the pioneer of all other industries. It is the key development that led to the rise of civilization and it provides us all with the fundamental means of survival.

Without it, we would not have the ability to contribute to any other areas of society.

Many of us have heard stories from prior generations about working the fields with a horse and plow, harvesting grain with a threshing crew and churning homemade butter. These activities involved hard manual labour and low productivity. Enough was produced to feed families and a small amount was left over to take to market. Imagine if that were the case today. Fortunately, with the modernization of equipment and abundance of technological advances, the yields and quality of agricultural products have expanded immensely.

Agricultural commodities continue to grow and succeed in the global marketplace and Alberta contributes to this growth and success. Albertans are fortunate to have

Edmonton plays a critical role in Alberta’s agriculture by supporting surrounding agricultural communities. It is important that the Edmonton business community continues to assist its rural neighbours in their tireless efforts.

It is important that leaders and mentors aim to educate and be educated on the life-sustaining importance of agriculture and the preservation of agricultural land. The viability of the agricultural industry is important to everyone and should be held as a priority by us all.

The warmer season is upon us. Newborn calves are in barnyards, seedlings are in greenhouses and equipment is being prepared for the fields. Our agricultural providers are dedicated individuals who take the business of feeding people very seriously. We cannot overlook the importance of agriculture and must continue to support the industry for the benefit of society.
