For most of us, it requires practice, coaching, and hard work to master a skill which can be intimidating and frightening. At a time when it seems there is an aversion to PowerPoint presentations, there will always be a need or requirement for career-minded individuals to be competent and comfortable speaking and presenting in front of audiences - in person or online and to employees, colleagues, or clients. Here are 6 tips to success from a career of delivering more than 300 presentations. 1 Start with the end in mind One of the most difficult steps in delivering effective presentations is the development of the presentation itself. We often struggle organizing a presentation so it delivers the messages you want, is well organized and flows nicely, and is visually appealing (if using visual aids). Start with end in mind. Identify 3-5 key messages you want the audience to remember. Once you have your messages, build your presentation around those messages. Create an outline for your presentation and fill in the blanks - introduction, body and content, value proposition of very most important takeaway message, and closing. 2 Keep it simple We hear it often - keep it simple. I recall preparing a presentation for a CEO in the Middle East about 5 years ago. I worked on it for about a week and went into the meeting ready to deliver about a 45 minute presentation. Before I started, the CEO turned to me and said “I have about 15 minutes so please just hit the highlights of what you are proposing and how it will solve our issues.” This was a great reminder of how most of us our today - busy and overloaded with information. I improvised and shortened a 45- minute presentation into about 12 minutes. Always be ready to deliver an “executive summary” of your presentation if needed. 3 Use graphics and pictures Using graphics and pictures in a presentation can be powerful. Use simple but attractive graphics to tell a story or convey and support a message. Use pictures to show your experience or an example. Graphics tend to trump bullet points and text every time. 4 Practice your presentation There is no better substitute than practicing. Whether you are using visual aids or just standing in front of a podium, practice, practice, practice. You should rehearse in front of a mirror or in front of other colleagues (when possible) at least 3-4 times before delivering the presentation. Be open to feedback. Sometimes we can’t see what others see in us or we don’t realize we are doing something annoying like putting our hands in our pockets and jingling coins. Never try to “wing” a presentation. Be ready when it counts. 5 Bring energy and enthusiasm Audiences and clients are perceptive. You need every edge you can get when competing against others for projects or competitions. Look like you want to be there by showing some excitement and enthusiasm. There is a fine line here with not over-selling or going out of character. Be yourself, be calm, confident, and make the audience feel you want to be there and you are enjoying it. 6 Nail your opening and closing Leave nothing to chance, nail your opening and closing. You should practice and know the first 25-35 words you are going to open with, exactly. You should also know how you are going to close and summarize, precisely. The Stories Every Salesperson Needs

Throughout the ages, stories have remained the primary way of capturing people’s attention and firing their imagination; and in today’s overhyped consumer society, stories cut-through the noise to powerfully influence your customer’s decisions. Why Stories Work One of the truest statements about human behaviour is: Logic makes them think; emotion makes them act. Most salespeople have no trouble with the first part - making their customer think with an impressive list of features and benefits. They are often frustrated, however, because while the customer is acknowledging the value of all the enticements, they are still not buying! When pressed, some customers will even say, “It just doesn’t feel right.” This is because one part of the brain - the Neocortex which processes information - is very satisfied; but there is one major part which is unconvinced - the Limbic Brain which deals in images and emotions. This is the part of the brain that is engaged when we listen to a story. Most importantly, it is the Limbic Brain that is responsible for all decision making. Stories help your customer ‘feel right’ about their buying decision. There are four basic stories that every salesperson needs.
The Purpose Story The most powerful way you can influence the Limbic Brain is to move beyond the what and the how of what you do to the why. As Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why says, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” So, if you are a Financial Planner, you might tell the story about why you moved into this profession - why helping people plan for a secure future is important to you.
The USP Story Every company needs to work relentlessly to articulate their Unique Selling Proposition (USP). And, of course, this needs constantly updating, because in today’s fast-moving world, what was unique yesterday is commonplace today. It is concerning the number of salespeople who, when asked to describe their USPs, gave answers that were vague, forgettable or irrelevant. So, assuming that these are understood, the next step is to identify stories that help customers to understand them. Is your USP connected to your size (large or boutique), your specialty, your accessibility, or some other factor? What can you do better than any of your competitors - and what story best epitomises this?
The Values Story Good salespeople are constantly trying to sell the ‘value package’. Unless customers are sold on the full value of the
offering, they will fall into the trap of the lowest commodity supplier. They find out the value of back-up, customer service and reliability only when it’s too late. Often, it’s awkward to work into the conversation how you value your professional reputation or how your company lives its values of fairness and excellence. And, sometimes, if you do say it, the customer can think, “They all say that.” When you tell a story that demonstrates these values, it shows by your actions what you stand for.
The Objection Story For many salespeople, this is where it gets difficult. The willing customer suddenly becomes resistant - just when you’re about to ask for the sale. Firstly, don’t be put off. Remember that they still want to buy - or they wouldn’t be wasting their time speaking to you. They may need reassurance for that side of their personality that is more cautious. There may be others that they feel they need to justify their decision to and the objections are really just the questions that they expect to be asked later. In responding to an objection you are trying to - in the nicest possible way - tell the customer they’re wrong. And we all know how dangerous that is! This is where stories are particularly effective, because stories are one of the few places where we are happy to be wrong. We love the story with an unexpected ending. We laugh at the joke with the twist in the punch-line. And we can use stories as a non-threatening way of changing a customer’s perspective or their belief about an issue. Most customer objections are predictable, so the wellprepared salesperson will be able to have an appropriate story for each one. Professor Robert Cialdini in his book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion nominates one of the main elements of influence as social proof. This means that people will be influenced to change their behaviour if they see others like them doing the same. So, if you have a story about someone they see as similar to them it will have the greatest impact. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BUYING A FRANCHISE?

He is a multi-unit owner of various franchises, Checkers, Subway, Pop-Eyes, Dominos and Aziz also serves on the board of directors of the International Franchise Association. AZIZ: I think clearly one of the benefits of franchising is you know we have a saying that in franchising you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. In franchising you are purchasing a business concept, a business model, which comes with support and training. So in my case for example I’m in the restaurant franchising space but I’m not a restaurateurs, I’m not a chef and I don’t need to be in franchising because the companies that I franchise with, they provide all the systems and tools necessary. So your chances of success in franchising is much higher than going and opening your own restaurant for example or your own business because it comes with a proven track record with a large name, so that’s clearly one of the benefits. The second benefit is scalability. Franchising is really one of those few businesses that you can actually start with one and you can grow. It’s meant to be scaled and that’s how I became a multi-unit franchisee and there are many other people who are multi-unit franchisees as well. So if you choose to, you can scale and that’s a second great benefit about franchising. The third thing is, because franchising has been so successful over such a long period of time, financing is usually much easier. Banks are willing to take a risk on franchising where they may not take a risk on other types of businesses, so that’s another really good benefit. As far as drawbacks goes, there’s risk associated with every business and you have to understand that in franchising, just like any other business, A) you have to have a passion for what you’re doing, if you don’t like the kind of business that you’re doing, you’re not going to be successful whether it’s franchising or not, so that doesn’t change. Number two, if you’re a creative person that likes to creative your own systems and your own processes and your own things, franchising is not the right business for you because in franchising the franchisor controls. You can certainly make suggestions, and that’s welcome, but you can’t go out and do whatever you want just because you know you own that business, you actually just own a franchise. So as in my restaurant I cannot create new menu items without the approval of the franchisor. So that’s a very clear distinction between franchising and non-franchising so for most people franchising works great because if you are an innovator if you are creator you will probably go create your own franchise, so those are some of the things that work.
