n an industry grappling with surging post-pandemic demand, chronic labour shortages, and supply-chain pressures, Globalia MRO has been quietly executing one of the most ambitious transformations in European aircraft maintenance. At the heart of that transformation is Oscar Perez Vazquez — a leader who speaks with the measured confidence of someone who has seen the industry at its most turbulent and knows precisely what it takes to come out ahead. Perez Vazquez sat down with Business Enquirer to discuss the company's expansion into Madrid, the challenge of scaling culture alongside operations, and why, in a market defined by scarcity, reliability has become the ultimate currency.

GLOBALIA MRO AVIATION

“We are no longer just a support function. We are a business in our own right — and the market has responded. ”

A Strategic Pivot: From Cost Centre to Business Centre The story of Globalia MRO's recent evolution begins with a fundamental question: why should a world-class maintenance capability exist solely to service one airline? For Perez Vazquez, the answer was clear — it shouldn't. "The Madrid expansion was a strategic decision to transition the company from being a cost centre for Air Europa to a business centre serving third-party airlines," he explains. The move was not simply about adding hangar space. It represented a deliberate repositioning of the organisation's identity and commercial ambition. Madrid was chosen deliberately. As a connectivity hub for long-haul operators and the home of the main Air Europa hub, the Spanish capital offered both the infrastructure and the client base to accelerate growth. The facility adds capabilities for Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft, complementing the company's existing narrow-body centre of excellence in Palma de Mallorca — a balance that allows Globalia MRO to serve an increasingly diverse customer portfolio. The strategic logic has proven sound. White-body maintenance capacity is currently one of the most constrained segments in European aviation, and Globalia MRO's timing — and location — has positioned it to capitalise on that scarcity. Scaling People, Not Just Hangars Growth of this magnitude brings its own complexities. In two years, the Madrid facility has recruited approximately 200 people — a rapid expansion that Perez Vazquez acknowledges as one of the company's most significant management challenges. "In a fast-growing company, culture must grow alongside business operations," he says. "Safety, respect for people, and Business Enquirer Magazine

respect for customers — these are not slogans. They are the foundation on which everything else is built." The risk, he explains, is fragmentation: two locations, two teams, two sets of habits — and, eventually, two cultures. To guard against this, Globalia MRO actively rotates staff between Madrid and Palma, embedding experienced technicians from the established Palma operation into the newer Madrid team. The goal is a single, cohesive organisation, not a collection of regional outposts. This emphasis on integration extends to communication. Cross-location alignment on purpose, process, and standards is treated as an operational priority, not an HR nicety. For Perez Vazquez, the combination of technical competence and high accountability is what separates a genuinely scalable MRO business from one that merely grows in headcount. Service Expansion and Commercial Diversification Beyond geography, Globalia MRO is widening what it offers. The company is extending its service portfolio beyond traditional heavy checks to encompass structural work, non-destructive testing, and specialised parts support — capabilities that reflect a changing customer expectation. "Customers increasingly expect their MRO provider to act as a partner," Perez Vazquez observes. "They want composite structural repairs, avionics support — not just the heavy check itself. The scope of what clients need has grown, and we have grown with it." The commercial results of this diversification are striking. Four years ago, approximately 98% of the company's revenue came from Air Europa. Today, Globalia MRO has achieved a 50/50 split between its partner airline and thirdparty customers — a transformation that fundamentally de-risks the business and demonstrates its credibility in the open market. 6

Further expansion is already in planning. The company is in negotiations with airport authorities in Palma to extend its footprint, adding one wide-body and one narrow-body position — a development that would require around 100 additional permanent technicians and significantly increase throughput capacity. A Market Defined by Scarcity The broader context in which Globalia MRO is operating is one of unusual intensity. Post-pandemic traffic has not merely recovered — it has exceeded pre-crisis levels, driving maintenance demand higher at precisely the moment when the industry's capacity to respond is constrained by labour shortages, supplychain disruption, and cost inflation. 8

"The value of reliability has never been higher. Customers are not just buying a maintenance slot — they are buying certainty." This dynamic has reshaped how customers approach the market. Rather than booking maintenance on an ad-hoc basis, airlines are now securing slots two years or more in advance — a reflection not of preference but of necessity. Maintenance slots, particularly for widebody aircraft, have become a scarce resource, and those who can guarantee delivery are in a position of considerable commercial strength. Globalia MRO's order book reflects this reality. Beyond the anchor of a ten-year contract with Air Europa, the company

GLOBALIA MRO AVIATION

has secured a five-year agreement with Scandinavian Airlines for A330 maintenance and three-year deals with Vueling. The shift towards longterm contracting, Perez Vazquez notes, is a structural change in the market — one driven by customers seeking certainty over cost, time line, and slot availability. Even for one-off maintenance tasks, customers are booking slots at least two years in advance due to the scarcity of available maintenance slots in Europe. Trust and confidence in the provider's ability to deliver safely and responsibly are the primary drivers of these long-term commitments — and that trust, Perez Vazquez is clear, is built on the strong commitment and professionalism of the entire Globalia MRO team.

Competitive Advantage: The Airline DNA Difference When asked what sets Globalia MRO apart in a competitive market, Perez Vazquez returns repeatedly to a concept he calls "airline DNA". Having grown up within an airline environment — where on-time performance, cost discipline, and network impact are existential concerns, not abstract metrics — the company brings a distinctly operational mindset to maintenance. "Punctuality, cost discipline, understanding the network impact of a delayed aircraft — these are things we live and breathe," he says. "That background gives us a pragmatic approach that purely independent MROs sometimes lack." Business Enquirer Magazine

This is reinforced by structural advantages: a cost-competitive footprint in Southern Europe, the flexibility to shift checks between locations, and the ability to serve different aircraft types simultaneously. But perhaps most importantly, Perez Vazquez cites a culture of direct, transparent, execution-focused communication as the foundation of customer trust. Managing a customer base that spans Boeing, Air Europa, Vueling, and Iberia — each with its own maintenance programmes, engineering expectations, and commercial conditions — requires, he says, robust processes, experienced staff, and a genuine commitment to understanding what each customer actually needs, whether they are an original equipment manufacturer, a lowcost carrier, or a flag carrier. Digitisation and Sustainability: Pragmatism Over Ideology On the twin themes of digitisation and environmental sustainability, Perez Vazquez is consistent: both are approached as operational tools rather than strategic statements. "We adopt digital tools only where they solve real operational problems," he explains. "Improving service quality, traceability, response times — these are the metrics that matter." The company has digitised its engineering request flows, implemented shop-level KPIs for real-time feedback, and is developing an advanced planning cell that uses historical data to anticipate risks and optimise resource allocation — a form of predictive maintenance that reduces disruption during checks. On sustainability, the focus is similarly hands-on: improving hazardous materials handling, refining parts segregation, reducing task times, minimising waste.

14

Business Enquirer Magazine

"We want environmental performance to be tangible and effective within the hangar," he says. "Not a marketing exercise — a daily operational reality." Looking Ahead: Consolidation Before Conquest Asked about geographic expansion, Perez Vazquez is notably disciplined. The current priority, he says, is consolidating and extracting value from the existing Spanish platforms — particularly the still-maturing Madrid facility — rather than pursuing international growth for its own sake. "Growth without operational control is a risk," he states. "We have spent four years building something real. The next three to five years are about strengthening the fundamentals — operational discipline, financial results, expanded capabilities — and making sure the foundation is solid before we build higher." Those expanded capabilities include certification for Airbus A350 maintenance and composite repairs, developed in partnership with strategic industrial players. It is a targeted, technically demanding ambition — and entirely consistent with a leader who measures success not by the size of the announcement, but by the quality of the execution. Globalia MRO's journey — from a largely captive cost centre to a recognised thirdparty provider with a growing portfolio of long-term international contracts — is one of the more compelling turnaround stories in European aviation services. In a market where demand is high, capacity is scarce, and customers are choosing partners for years at a time, the company's emphasis on execution, culture, and reliability looks less like a philosophy and more like a competitive strategy.
