hat a week it has been. I hope you are all going well and staying as safe as you possibly can. This week forced me to think about how important it is to have plan B’s in life. Like many of you, I live on my laptop, mostly for work purposes, my laptop has been very efficient and non-problematic for the last 5 years and as I opened my laptop to host a webinar this past Wednesday morning, I realized the screen seemed to be pixelated and I couldn’t see half of my screen. This was 15 minutes before the session and I wasn’t at the office therefore couldn’t use an office computer. I had to quickly improvise and use my phone and phone stand. This reminded me of the importance of having options in case of emergency. Emergency technology, emergency funds. How do you handle emergencies in your life? Think about it…

I know many of you were excited to hear that Nigeria is opening up for international flights. While we are aware that some were travelling during COVID19 through private flights, evacuation flights or though Cotonou, I think the fact that international flights have officially resumed gives many a feeling of freedom. Given the cosmopolitan nature of the world we live in travel is essential for business, leisure of for seeing loved ones. 6 months without travel has been unsettling for so many, myself included.

Travel will more than likely be different moving forward, and in this week’s edition of the Weekender, our lead story explores vacation destinations you can consider as well as some travel requirements straight from the desk of the ministry of aviation. You will also find tips on how to travel safely and what that will look like come August 29th. As the economies around the world begin to open up please remember that the virus is still out there. I have heard a few people say “corona is over’’ and I find this rather alarming. COVID19 is absolutely not over, in fact cases are rising.

he recent wave of deadly attacks in the southern part of Kaduna State has brought the seemingly never-ending cycle of communal violence and impunity in the state back into focus. The latest in the attack was the killing of 11 persons, including a village head and his 97year-old mother allegedly carried out by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia in Zango-Kataf, Kajuru and Kachia local government areas of the state.

This has however drawn international condemnation with the Nigerian abroad under the umbrella of Southern Kaduna People in Diaspora (SOKAPDA) who protested against the killings in Kaduna, imploring the international community to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the bloodletting.

Also during the week the Nigerian Bar Association withdrawn the invitation e xte n d e d to t h e Ka d u n a St a te Governor, Nasir El-Rufai to participate in the associations forthcoming annual g e n e ra l m e e t i n g . igeria’s rate of inflation for the month of July which is measured by the country’s Consumer Price Index, surged 12.82 percent, the highest ever recorded for the past 27 months.

According to the National Bureau, the latest increase represents 0.26 percent points higher than the rate recorded in June 2020, which was 12.56 percent.

Nigeria’s inflation rate has been on the increase since the beginning of this year.

Findings showed that in January, February, March, April, May, and June, the rates in percentages were 12.13, 12.20, 12.26, 12.34, 12.40 and 12.56 respectively.

TN Group has announced that the current group chief financial officer of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita, has been appointed as the new group president and CEO with effect from 1 September 2020. Ralph has served as the MTN Group CFO since April 2017 and has played a critical role in the development and execution of the group’s strategy, capital allocation processes, financial performance as well as in the resolution of a number of complex regulatory matters.

Commenting on his appointment, Ralph said: “Leading a business with MTN Group’s history, scale, and socioeconomic impact is a privilege and honour, and I look forward to working with the group board and executive committee in driving growth and unlocking value for shareholders and broader stakeholders.”

The current group president and CEO, Rob Shuter, will step down from his executive responsibilities on 31 August 2020 and will thereafter support Ralph as required until the end of his fixedterm contract early next year.

Citigroup Inc. has appointed Ireti Samuel-Ogbu as its first female Nigerian country officer. She would be the first woman appointed to the bank’s top post after 36 years of operating in Africa’s largest economy.

Samuel-Ogbu will officially resume in the new role on September 1, replacing Akin Dawodu, who was appointed as cluster head for sub-Saharan Africa in November, Citigroup’s Nigerian unit said in an email.

As the nation’s airspace prepares to resume international flights on August 29, Hadi Sirika, minister of Aviation, says the country will apply the principle of reciprocity.

Speaking at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 daily briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Sirika explained that this principle meant carriers from all countries that banned flights from Nigeria would also not be allowed to fly into Nigeria. Recall that flights from Nigeria are among those banned by the European Union (EU) countries when they opened their airspaces on July 1, 2020.

Speaking on the preparation for international flights resumption, Sirika said: “We are almost there. Just a few things to be done, but we will be ready in the coming days. By Monday, we will have comprehensive details for the resumption.”

Keita's forced resignation came after months of a political crisis that stemmed from a disputed parliamentary election. In June, antigovernment protesters took the streets of the capital demanding Keita's step down. He remained largely defiant, but in early July attempted to appease the opposition. However, the movement's leaders insisted that he resign and parliament be dissolved, as well as urged civil disobedience.

Transforming your business through digital strategy; even in uncertainty Obong Idiong AUG 2020

F

ive months after the first case of Covid-19 was confirmed in the country, corporate Nigeria is quickly coming to grips with the impact of the global pandemic on business operations. Beyond the economic slowdown and resulting decline in commerce that has trailed the spread of the disease, businesses are forced to adapt to its impact on consumer behavior and business operations.

To prevent the spread of the disease and to accommodate customer and employee demand for less physical interaction, organizations must create operational protocols that protect their stakeholders from the virus. An effective way to do so is to minimize occasions where employees or customers make physical contact with each other. The adoption of digital solutions will go a long way toward achieving this goal.

However, the case for the adoption of a digital strategy goes beyond a response to a public health emergency. Many small businesses are using digital strategies to expand their businesses locally and internationally and according to a study by financial software giant Intuit and consulting firm Emergent Research, 80 percent of U.S. small businesses will be using cloud computing by 2020, compared to 37 percent in 2014. Indeed, the world presents many examples of small and large corporations in various industries that have been transformed by the proactive adoption of a digital strategy.

The pursuit of a digital transformation strategy underpinned the evolution of Best Buy from a struggling American electronic store, to a digital leader in technology, using data to create customer profiles to provide customized recommendations and assistance.

Similarly, through a deliberate effort over several years, Target, the second largest retailer in the United States, has risen to among the top 10 US companies by e-commerce sales. Through the pursuit of a digital strategy, both companies successfully waded off the cannibalization of their business by e-commerce giant Amazon.

Small businesses are also reporting the impact of a digitalization strategy. Graze.com, the UK health snack company, is an example of a small company that adopted cloud technology from the start, a decision that supported its transition into an international company that was eventually acquired by Unilever in 2019. The efficiency gains from a digital strategy has allowed the company to shorten its product development cycle by testing its products with online customers, getting feedback, and making a launch decision within 48 hours. There are also digital transformation stories in Nigeria. They include travel company Wakanow and refined petroleum products retailer Enyo. These firms have deployed technologies and processes that enhance the efficiency of supply chain management and customer interaction. In the process, they have delivered cost efficiency gains from the digitalization of operations, gained greater insight into customer needs and behavior, achieved greater inter-departmental collaboration, and expanded their customer reach. Africa Prudential has also introduced disruptive digital solutions such as Greenpole, a revolutionary enterprise registrar operating software in Nigeria’s capital market that migrates traditional shareholder management activity to the cloud, enabling company registrars to perform previously manual tasks with the click of a button on a mobile phone.

While several definitions exist for digital transformation, a common theme is the use of people, processes, and technology to fundamentally change business performance.

At the core of digital transformation is what International Data Corporation calls the third platform comprising four pillars; cloud, big data/analytics, social media, and mobility.

These allow enterprises to digitally transform in various areas such as new customer contact channels, product innovation, market segmentation among other areas.

Sadly, while it is difficult to find empirical data to confirm the level of adoption of a digital strategy by Nigerian companies, anecdotal evidence suggests that adoption is relatively low. The reasons for this include slow corporate leadership buy-in, deficiencies in workforce digital capabilities, and the deficit of the enabling infrastructure and thriving digital ecosystem to drive digital transformation.

However, Covid-19 is a wake-up call for many companies. It is revealing inherent weaknesses that not only elevate operating costs but expose businesses to the loss of market share to companies that are willing to use technology to disrupt the marketplace. Businesses must be willing and able to adapt to changing customer needs and behavior.

To win in an increasingly digital world where individuals and organizations are looking to transact online or remotely, businesses must adapt quickly to offer convenience at an affordable price. I

was having a conversation with a friend, Rukayyat Kolawole, and she said “empowered women empower generations: if we want to see an empowered generation, we must start with empowering women.” I wholeheartedly, empathically agree. Extending that to the family business realm, if we want to see Nigerian Family Businesses rising in glory, we must empower women.

In many Family Businesses, women are explicitly excluded from leadership and/or ownership roles, often automatically deferring to the eldest sons; in others, societal conditioning and reinforcement have led women to excuse themselves and dilute their potential leadership.

In this year of reckoning, we must see that excluding half of our talent pool from leadership and ownership is not only unjust, but it is also detrimental to the trajectory of our Family Businesses: Women often play invisible but critical roles - often as the glue that holds the family together. This is critical in Africa where we have more complex families larger nuclear families, more integrated extended families and “non-family family”: the definition of family can be philosophical, with many we consider “family” that are not blood-line relatives or in-laws. Women often navigate these complex units skilfully, leading with empathy and emotional intelligence to manage the various factions and promote harmony. It is often weaknesses in the family that hinder the multigenerational continuity of family businesses.

Our 21st century Volatile Uncertain Complex and Ambiguous (“VUCA”) world has given rise to a need for a new breed of enterprise leader that possess empathy, humility, influence and resilience. A lot of these qualities come naturally to women. Many studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between female involvement and business performance: For instance the 2016 “Women Matter Africa” study by McKinsey & Company saw that African firms with highest numbers of female representatives on the company boards had, on average,

20 per cent higher levels of profits compared to the industry standard. 2020 has been an extremely disruptive year.

However there is a silver lining, as moments of disruption provide excellent opportunities for transformation: may we seize the opportunity to redefine and reinvent our family businesses to not only be more diverse, but to also be more inclusive and empowering to all, so that we can empower future generations.

Consequently, 2 years later, the 19th Amendment was ratified, where women were granted suffrage.

Similarly, the current pandemic may provide the right context to transform the role of African women in family business, starting a new social norm. Women may find allies that champion their causes, as they individually and collectively discover their voices to negotiate the obstacles that face them in family businesses.

What you need to know about the August 29th flight resumption in Nigeria Top travel destinations for Nigerians

N

igerians in the country and the diaspora celebrated with excitement as the Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika disclosed on his twitter account that International flights will resume August 29th, 2020.

Further to his announcement at a press conference on Thursday 20th of August the minister has given more detail as to what this entails. According to him, the country’s position on flights coming in and out of Nigerian border, is informed by the ban placed by some countries on flights from Nigeria, and Nigeria’s decision was taken in the interest of its citizens.

Here is what we know so far about flight resumption

• International flights in Nigeria resume August 29th, 2020 • Nigeria plans to enforce the principle of reciprocity in

granting permission to airlines to resume operations in the country as it opens its airspace. What it means is that only airlines from countries that allow flights from Nigeria will be allowed to fly into and out of the country

• Airlines will be informed on arrangements put in place to ensure that resumption of flights will be hitch-free

• Only a few flights per day will be permitted as a test run

for the protocols put in place to ensure a safe return to international operations. The protocols, according to the minister, will be made public in due course

Important information for passengers traveling in and out of Nigerian borders

• Passengers arriving or returning to Nigeria must have

tested negative for COVID-19 (pre-boarding PCR test in the country of departure)

• The PCR test must be within two weeks before departure and preferably no less than five days to boarding

• Tests done more than two weeks before departure are not

valid and persons will not be allowed to board, but for the five days minimum, this is advisory and will not preclude boarding

• Onboard, passengers are required to fill in the Health Declaration/Self-Reporting Form and the Sample Collection Time Allocation Form

• Passengers should ensure that the information/contact

details provided on the form are correct and are verifiable and they can be reached on the phone number and at the address provided

Coming into Nigeria

• Upon arrival in Nigeria, passengers shall queue in an

orderly manner and disembarkation will be done systematically and in batches to avoid overcrowding

• The Health Declaration Form will be assessed and collected along with the Sample Collection Form

• Passengers are requested to keep their face masks on,

• Passengers who have arrived in Nigeria are advised to

• They will be given an appointment time and date to

present at the Sample Collection Centre located in Lagos or Abuja for a repeat COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of arrival

• Passengers must provide their full and correct address and phone number before exiting the airport. They must comply with self-isolation/quarantine guidelines and ensure that they can be reached and can be located during the period

arlier today, I was watching a movie and this cop with a very cute family was shot dead without the opportunity to carry out what I call the “golden rule”.

(If it can save your life, it’s a golden rule) What is the golden rule?

When you find yourself in such situation, the golden rule is to familiarize yourself with the shooter, tell them your name, your likes and what you do.

Make them know you are a person, just like them, you have a family, you have friends you have your likes and dislikes, and you are only human.

This will give them a sense of knowing you and might just let you go...

As the cop started to talk, he was shot.

Now, before you pull the trigger, how about the golden rule is for the shooter and not the victim, just before you pull the trigger, look at this person, your victim has parents who have made it their life goal to hope for the well-being of their child, siblings that’ll be shattered if anything happened to them, partners that’d be lost without them and children whose lives will automatically end with that one shot you chose to gift.

Before you pull the trigger, look at this person, he or she had plans for that very day, the month and the year, plans you can put an end to in that very moment or be human enough to let the universe use you to give someone a second chance.

Before you pull the trigger, just before you do it, decide that you can do it and be like every other being they’d rather not have met or spare a life and watch them thank you like a hero without a cape.

Now, if you say awful things to people and give no care in the world at the hole it leaves in their feeble heart, you pulled a trigger.

If you are aware of the consequences your actions will have on others and still do it anyway for it has no effect on you, you pulled a trigger.

If your happiness is based on saying things that are not true about other people and spread them anyway just because you can, you pulled a trigger.

If you use people all in the name of friendship, knowing fully well you have no intention of reciprocating such relationship, you pulled a trigger.

If you deny people their right because you are in a position of power and you have to be reminded of this by being awful to those deserving of their questions being answered, you pulled a trigger.

If you go round lying against people or spreading their flaws to get yourself out of trouble, you pulled a trigger!

Being human, we are so quick to decide who and who is a sinner, forgetting we all go round doing these exact same things, probably in different and lighter shades, but who says the one who shoots one dead is the only one who kills? Who says a bullet is the only way to kill a man? There are about a thousand and one ways to die, and not being loved the right way is definitely one of them, being a victim of rumors being spread about oneself is definitely one of them, being judged at every step you make, while not being understood that life has not exactly given you many options, is most definitely one of them. So the next time you want to say something about someone, do something that’d cost someone or use people like they are trash, remember there is no difference between you and a gunman, the only thing that separates you is the weapon he’s holding and when he does get apprehended and imprisoned by the system, you will get apprehended and imprisoned by the universe... it’s really no rocket science.

Save a life, stop pulling the trigger on people.

It literally costs nothing!

Are you having difficulty controlling your blood pressure?

A

s many as 40% of adults in Nigeria are hypertensive, and majority are not even aware. Of those who are aware only about 20% have their blood pressure adequately controlled. The goal for treating blood pressure is to get the levels to 130/80mmHg or lower. (130 systolic, 80 diastolic). We are concerned about poorly controlled blood pressure because of the possible side effects/complications that can arise if the blood pressure is not adequately controlled i.e Stroke, heart and kidney failure, cardiac arrest and so on.

Many people with elevated blood pressure are not able to attain this goal, and it can be frustrating for both the patient and the doctor when this persists. Before you conclude that your drugs are not effective or your doctor is a quack. Let’s run through some reasons why you may not have achieved blood pressure control: Not using the medication: there is no way your blood pressure will be under control if you are not taking the medicine or you are taking it in a haphazard way. Classical example, taking drugs only when you fell “somehow”, taking medication once a week or every other day. Hypertension drugs are only effective if they are used at the correct dosage.

Not following the lifestyle changes: cutting down salt intake, eating a good quantity of raw vegetables and fruits as well as daily exercise ALL contribute to reducing your blood pressure. Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes are also important lifestyle changes. You must adhere to these lifestyle changes to get effective blood pressure control, even when you are on medication.

Inappropriate medication: hypertension management is not a “one size fit all” affair. Drugs are prescribed according to the individual’s characteristics and health needs. So you cannot achieve good blood pressure control by “borrowing or sharing“ another person’s medication.

Not going to hospital for follow up; So you have been given a set of BP medication, they have reduced the blood pressure, so no need to go back to see your doctor right?

WRONG! When you don’t go back to the clinic for periodic follow up, the doctor will not know when other conditions develop and change your medication appropriately.

Your blood pressure is not under the management of a specialist: you won’t take your car to a carpenter to maintain would you? So why would you decide that the most important thing to you – your health, can be managed by anyone who has a science degree? The only people trained to manage blood pressure are doctors (primary care physicians and internists). If you are receiving care from any other category of health practitioner, you may not be getting the best treatment for you.

Lack of trust in the healthcare personnel: generally if you don’t trust your doctor, how can you follow their advice?

Or if they are not allowing you ask questions or you don’t even understand why you are taking so many drugs in the first place. There is no harm in seeking a second opinion or looking for a doctor that you can trust well enough to follow their instructions.

The use of supplements: Not all supplements are good for hypertensive people. There are some pills that contain stimulants, which can raise the blood pressure and can be dangerous.

Excessive stress: Stress and lack of sleep both elevate hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which contribute to raise your blood pressure. Are you getting 6 hours of sleep every night? Do you get angry or worry over every little thing? This may be why your blood pressure has not been adequately controlled. If your blood pressure is not controlled, I am sure you have found a few reasons why and you will make moves to correct them.

What active role(s) did you play towards the new Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 recently signed into law by President Buhari – the largest business law in Nigeria?

Why toxic people are the way they are.

Leaving my home for the first time after the nationwide lockdown was lifted.

CAMA 2020 has been work in progress for over 6 years.

Further to an invitation from the Section on Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA-SBL), I participated in a review of the draft CAMA Bill which was intended for sponsorship by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

More recently, I was on the Technical Committee which was set up by the then Senate President to review and redraft the Bill. Working directly with the leadership of the National Assembly, I also provided technical support for the inclusion of a more robust insolvency legal framework.

What are some of the highlights of CAMA 2020 that have the Nigerian business community quite excited?

Creation of new legal business vehicles, that is Limited Liability Partnerships and Limited Partnerships; New provisions which support the CAC’s current drive to digitize the Registry; Creation of a special legal framework which support the ease of doing business especially for MSMEs; Provisions designed to strengthen corporate governance and so many others.

What makes the biggest difference in your life?

inda Mabhena-Olagunju is a force of nature and she is one of Africa’s leading business women in the energy sector. She is the Founder & Managing Director of DLO Energy Resources Group (Pty) Ltd a wholly black female owned independent power producer with a portfolio of wind and solar energy projects in Nigeria, Botswana and South Africa.

With an LLB from UCT and an LLM from the University of Aberdeen and as an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, she is a very accomplished woman. She has graced the cover of Forbes Africa, featured on Oprah’s Power List amongst the 20 most powerful women in Africa, named Choiseul 100 Africa Economic Leaders For Tomorrow, named Young Business Leader for Southern Africa under the CNBC All Africa Business Leaders Awards, won Veuve Clicquot Elle Boss Award and is a member of the advisory board for scholarships by the University of Oxford. We sat down with this powerhouse woman and spoke about her leadership journey and the future ofAfrica What has been the biggest lesson you have learnt in your leadership journey? Well there are two big lessons I have learnt the first is to trust my instincts, about people, about situations and definitely about investments. Women has a six sense and we often don’t use it to our advantage.

The second most crucial lesson I learnt over the years is to listen more and say less. I used to have an obsession with being heard especially because of the under representation of women in the board room. Earlier in my career I thought it was necessary to speak and be heard but later I realized it is better to listen, understand and speak only when absolutely necessary.

What do you know now that you wish you knew earlier? There will never be enough hours in a day be content with what you achieve each day even o the days you rest , there is progress.

What are the 3 greatest keys to unlocking Africa’s potential?Leadership that is about serving the people as opposed to lining one’s pockets.African governments creating an enabling environment for business to function.

African governments staffed by younger leaders, Africa is a continent with a big youth population yet led predominately by leaders who with all due respect have served their generations. I strongly believe younger and more energetic leadership is required for progress.

What do you see as the greatest opportunity on the continent? Inter African trade. We are so obsessed with exporting and trading with everyone but ourselves. AfCTA is a promising step in the right direction however there are still so many hurdles including the usual African bureaucracy especially around border permits for the movement of goods as well as a lack of regulatory harmony across the various African countries. Once we get this right I think we will be better position to determine our own growth and prosperity .

What would you say is your organization’s biggest asset and why?Our wind projects which are amongst the largest on the continent, as well as our project pipeline both in SA and Nigeria.

What do you see being Africa’s largest export to the world in the next decade? Well through the brain drain we have already exported some of our greatest minds sadly.

I’m more interested in what we are going to export to each other and I think due to the difficult environment in which we operate African business has had to be innovative and I think we can learn a lot from each other especially in the fin tech space where I have seen a number of great innovations.

What are the top 3 industries to look out for and why? Energy, Tech and Health Care. Energy because it is the backbone of an industrialized nation, tech because it is central to growth and industrialization and heath care due to the global pandemic we are currently facing and the fact that health is paramount to the function of any economy.

Which African country inspires you the most and why?Rwanda it built itself up from one of the greatest tragedies, it is not a country well- endowed with mineral or hydrocarbon resources but with effective leadership it has managed to build a strong and innovative economy.

Where do you see the future of energy? I am hoping to see a more liberalized power sector with African owned independent power producers having direct access to the market. I see the utility model in its current form becoming obsolete.

n reshaping your ideals and aspiring for the impossible, one must be BOLD. Many of us are afraid and rather than take bold steps to branch into uncharted territory, we remain within the shores of safety. This week, I want to address this mindset and literally “kill” it.

We are called to be bold and courageous at taking on life. I always say, DO IT AFRAID! In facing your fears, you are being courageous.

Being Bold (of a person, action, or idea) is showing an ability to take risks; confident and courageous as defined

by Oxford Dictionary. Some other words that are often used interchangeably are unafraid, daring, confident, undaunted.

In other words, a BOLD person is brave, unafraid, daring, confident and adventurous.

To become BOLD, we need to be: B rave O ut of the box thinkers L arge hearted

In a world where we are short with one another, becoming bold means you have to take that exceptional step to be accommodating of others.

DO IT AFRAID! Face your fears today. Be a VICTOR not a VICTIM. You must think OUT OF THE BOX How many times do we do things simply because we have been told it has always been done this way? Probably most times, sometimes, even when we know of a better way of doing things, we are remain silent preferring the norm.

However, being bold requires that you think out of the box; this is what I call thinking out of the ordinary to do the extraordinary. The fear of rejection is the typical culprit we face when changing the status quo; would I be accepted? Would anyone use this method? You know what? Be Brave- face that fear and do it! We all will be better if you did!

You must be LARGE HEARTED

D aring To be BRAVE Bravery is not about the size of the fight in you, but about the state of your heart. Your heart must be brave before you can face the unknown, an enemy or a new feat. Does this mean that you have no fear? Not at all! Being brave is defined as the ability to endure or face (unpleasant conditions or behavior) without showing fear”. The last part says “without showing fear”. Therefore, bravery is really not a lack of fear, but it is a heart that says it is possible despite my fears (my definition).

To become bold, you must learn to face your fears and defeat them. You must be willing to step out of your comfort zone and face the unknown. You must have an inquisitive mind and be curious – certainly almost childlike in your approach to new things. Being brave means standing up for what you believe, even when you are the only one standing; it means doing what you know is right despite being alone, it means facing up to bullies and abuse.

How does this even add up, you may ask? Being sympathetic, generous or kind hearted is being bold? Yes, it is! In a world where we are short with one another, becoming bold means you have to take that exceptional step to be accommodating of others. You must show compassion, mercy and kindness; tolerative of people and their behaviour even when it is most unpleasant. Know that because you are bold to do the extraordinary, question the status quo, take risks and do what seemed impossible, you will attract ‘haters’. So, stay focused and be nice.

DARING to become Adventure is necessary to spice up life. Being daring is being adventurous and being audacious. Facing your fears and taking calculated risks, allows you to grow as a bold and courageous individual. Dare to be the authentic you. Dare to do something different. Dare to be bold!

Book Review

Risk and Return Titilade Oyemade AUG 2020

B

elonging to a genre of writing that has been denigrated in many quarters of Nigeria’s literary space, Yomi Jemibewon’s memoir, Risk and Return, rises above the stereotype and delivers motivation to a people that need it the most, through meticulously told reallife stories. All this is achieved without being too serious for comfort.

227 pages strong, an almost-ordinary cover and spread over 10 chapters, Risk and Return is easy to read and punctuated with in-depth exposés that would help anyone walk through the thorns and crowns of life. The book’s motive is clear right from its title which leaves no one in doubt of its subject matter. Its memoir style—captured in simple vocabulary— brings the author’s voice home in a conversational tone, resplendent humour and consistent narratives.

Indeed, the hype around the book, which one might initially think to question, is deserving. The more one reads it, the more it feels like being watching a biopic in a cinema. It tells the story of Yomi Jemibewon who seemed to have had everything going for him in America with a fascinating job and life, yet felt grossly dissatisfied. Jemibewon shares his life’s struggles which continued till he finally decided to find purpose in Nigeria, through an enterprise started with three partners.

At many junctures, the book is capable of causing the reader to take a cursory look at their own life, thoroughly evaluating the life’s essence, their path in it and the impact they were made for. Although readers not hitherto grounded in financial jingos might need to consult their search engine to learn more from time to time, Jemibewon still manages to carry every reader along.

It is interesting how, in these chapters, the author shares useful insights into how to build great reputation, stay within one’s principles, step out of one’s comfort zone, the importance of mentorship, the value of partnerships in business, planning for the worst case scenario in business as well as the guiding principles of entrepreneurship.

As a reader, Risks and Returns encourages you to do something with and about your life if you are not happy where you are. As the review, if I could change something about the book, it would be its cover going by which many might judge it. However, what it lack on its cover, it makes up for with its rich content.

Risk and Return comes highly recommended as a book to get individuals planning to do something great and different fired up. It is especially for those desirous of taking a leap of faith into a new venture or just desirous of impacting their generation positively.

Mompreneur HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT IT? TigerFIreRose AUG 2020

A lot of times, the seemingly bigger things in life consume our focus and energy and we forget that the foundation to sustain the structure must be solidly built on the important things. Giant edifices are built by putting together smaller pieces of bricks. Its like a cake. The icing is beautiful and attracts you to the cake but what would determine if you would get a referral or callback is the taste of the actual cake.

Nobody has ordered a box full of icing before. But people order naked cake loaves all the time because what really matters is the cake. (I love cake, can you tell?) Some interesting foundational bricks are being swallowed up by words like ’Branding’, ’ROI’, ’Packaging’ that are really just meant to be the icing on the cake but have somehow been elevated to the status of cake without actually being cake.

One of the strongest but constantly overlooked ingredients needed to make that fluffy cake of a mompreneur has to be Persistence.

Persistence in life and business is a strong determinant on if you would reach any of your goals. We most times believe that when it is said, it is done but the truth is persistence is the binding agent of that deal. I learned the strength of persistence from my toddler. I believe once I have given her an instruction, it has to be fulfilled to the letter but I realized that sometimes, she likes to check how serious I am or rather, how committed I am to seeing her see that instruction through. Simply put... How badly do I want it?

Did I really mean it when I said ’Don’t put that in your mouth!’, or is there wriggle room? The only way for her to answer her mind’s questions sometimes is to stop obeying midway and take an assessment. My reaction to that pause/ silence/hesitation on her path determines a lot of things but most importantly, it lets her know if she should follow through. In this situation, if I am not persistent with her, and keep on ensuring we are on track with the instruction given, she will keep eating crayons because for some strange reason, it seems right to her. Business is a lot like that.

Sometimes, a client or a business deal might suddenly run cold and instead of pursuing with that extra fire that shows how committed you are to seeing it through, we just leave it to ice out and become another cold tale in our tale of woes.

I learned this at a great cost to my career. I had the grand opportunity to be a writer on an International webstreaming platform’s original feature length film and I messed it up. Not because I am not amazing at what I do, not because I lacked substance but because I was not persistent. I lacked the power of chasing down that dream with hunger. My approach was extremely laid back and very ’If it was meant to be’. My follow up game was terrible and a lot of information kept passing me by until eventually the job itself walked on by.

The truth is, you might be amazing at what you do but guess what? So are a hundred other people, its the extra flavor that you bring that makes you stand out. When everyone is dropping their vanilla flavored caked, hit them with a vanilla-coconut-chocolate marble with red velvet balls in between... that’s the silent but very necessary edge persistence can give you. Not everybody wants to fling a million dollars at a dying ember. People want to see your level of commitment and your hunger. How badly do you want it? Drive and persistence is a way to assess that.

My takeaway from my journey, now nicely flavored with a huge dollop of persistence is: 1. Persistence in Business yields results. Period.

2. Persistence does not leave room for the deal to slip away from you.

3. Persistence is a heavyweight that tips the scales in your favor in any match.

4. Persistence is like a chisel, chipping away at reservations and doubt. It speaks for you when you are not in the room in a way your work might not be able to.

Best believe my persistence level has been boosted 200% because I realized hungry would always beat well fed in a race.

o you know Humans are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep? Sleep deprivation has the potential of significant negative side effects than food deprivation. The irony of this is that sleep deprivation by some is seen as a sign of working hard.

Increasingly we find out people try to drive themselves on less sleep while expecting more productivity. The relationship between sleep and productivity is a symbiotic one. If you want to be productive, you need to sleep well.

Trying to do the opposite leads to significantly low productivity evidenced in work related errors, forgetting important details and facts. It ultimately impacts our creative abilities when they are highly needed.

With this knowledge, the average Nigerian still finds it very difficult to spend 8 hours in bed, However the question is this: Why can’t we sleep? We all know the answer to this, if your guess is as good as mine, the word is STRESS. Stress is the underlying factor that has stopped a lot us from resting and it’s why when the lockdown happened we were all forced to do something we hardly do, which was to pause and rest. To some of us, it must have been extremely difficult to do this but it shouldn’t be the lock down getting us to rest, it should be a way of life going forward.

Nigeria being a peculiar country comes with its stress levels, which naturally makes sleep the last thing on an average man’s mind, this shouldn’t be. Our health should be our priority hence, the importance of paying attention to our sleep pattern. Here are some ways by which having enough sleep affects our overall system.

Improved concentration and productivity Improved immune system A balanced emotional and social interactive state

We need to embrace sleep and see it as part of paying attention to our overall wellbeing. According to the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, It was discovered in 2016 that 40% of Nigerians have a sleeping problem, let’s reduce the number by paying more attention to our sleep pattern. I have itemized some products that can aid your sleep experience such as: Pillows: Goose feather pillows and bounce back pillows can help with relieving built-up stress at the end of the day.

A very good mattress: With different types of mattresses in the market, the memory or latex foam aids the sleep experience as it relaxes the entire body.

Diffusers: Some diffusers like the ylang-ylang & amber diffuser enhances the serenity in the room which makes it easier to go to sleep.

Lastly, good sleep is as important as eating healthy and exercising. We should pay as much attention to our sleep lifestyle as we do to our feeding habits, this will lead to an overall improved lifestyle.

These are a few of the comments I get when I speak to people about becoming more visible on social media. For many introverts, they find it difficult to embrace social media because it means sharing a part of their lives with ‘the public’.

It is important to understand that you control what you put out on social media. If you are an introvert, this guide will help you to have a presence on social media without giving away precious details about your personal life.

Be clear on the content you want to put out. As I mentioned before, you are completely in control of what you share on your social media pages. If you post personal details about your life, then people will know these personal details. For someone who is private, you can choose to stick to posting about your professional life, focusing more on the lessons you’ve learnt and challenges you have overcome. If you want to be more personable, you can share lessons you have learnt from personal challenges without sharing indepth details of the challenge itself.

Decide the timing of your posts. For many introverts, they find it easier to post content days and sometimes weeks after the particular event has happened. This is often done as a throwback or flashback. Don’t feel under pressure to post real time if you do not feel comfortable.

As long as what you are posting is valuable to your audience, you can post an insight or lessons a few days later. Consider posting highlights from interesting events from a few years ago and tell a good backstory.

Share content from experts you admire. Visibility on social media is not only about posting your own content.

You can repost content from thought leaders and experts within your industry. You can also post trending news and events and share your insights. When you do this, you offer value to your audience without sharing details of your personal life. Please be mindful of giving proper credit and attribute the source of the content. Tag, mention and include links as appropriate.

Think about the bigger picture. Social media visibility as a professional or someone who wants to build their personal brand is not about bragging. It is all about offering value to your followers and sharing your expertise with them. Having that mindset will allow you to be less self-conscious when you want to post on social media. There are tons of people who will be blessed by your journey and story.

Social media is a great platform for impacting lives. Start by taking baby steps and do only what you are comfortable with. Follow experts and thought leaders you admire. Do your research and you will discover that a good number of them are actually introverts but they have decided to use their expertise to bless others. You can do the same too.

Can PSG clinch first-ever Champions League glory against Bayern?

F

rench Ligue 1 Champions, Paris St-Germain (PSG), is one win away from becoming European champions for the first time after claiming an emphatic 3-0 win over German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in their semi-final in Lisbon, with goals coming from Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria and Juan Bernat.

PSG, one of Europe’s biggest spenders, but also one of the continent’s most high-profile underachievers on the Champions League stage will be hoping to become the second French winner of the trophy, 27 years after Marseille won the inaugural Champions League.

PSG will have to survive the onslaught of five-time winners Bayern Munich in a make or mar encounter on Sunday in Lisbon.

After dispatching Lyon in the semifinals, Bayern Munich are one game from clinching a second treble in seven years when they face Neymar's PSG side in the Champions League final on Sunday.

The Bayern machine rolled into their fourth Champions League final since 2010 and first since lifting the trophy for the fifth time in 2012/13 season on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win over Lyon.

The 2019/20 Bundesliga and DFB Cup winners have taken out the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Barcelona along the way, winning 10 from 10 continental fixtures by an eyepopping aggregate score of 42-8.

They have won all 14 of their behind-closed-door meetings since the resumption of the season in May, and are unbeaten in their last 29 competitive matches, winning 28 and drawing one.

A place in the Champions League final is uncharted territory for the team but Brazilian forward Neymar, winger Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe who has made a timely return from injury, will be spearheading PSG’s attacking force.

The French champions have successfully laid the ghosts of previous Champions League capitulations against Barcelona and Manchester United to rest, but they are still facing the world's most in-form side and a pound-for-pound superior squad.

If they triumph in the Champions League final on Sunday, PSG would have snared an incredible fifth trophy for the season - meaning they have won every competition they have competed in.

For coach Thomas Tuchel, who made his name in the Bundesliga with Mainz and Dortmund, it could prove a tough task. The 46-year-old is the first coach in history to guide PSG to the Champions League final and will be aiming to write his name in Champions League record books by winning on Sunday.

Head-To Head Stats Bayern has the best goals-per-game ratio in a single season in Champions League history (4.2). With 42 goals, the Bundesliga champions need three more goals to equal Barcelona's record 45-strike tally of 1999/2000.

Lewandowski is the first player since Ronaldo to score in nine consecutive Champions League matches.

Gnabry is third in this season's Champions League scoring charts with nine goals, all of which have come away from home.

Lewandowski has been scoring for fun and the 31-year-old extended his tournament-leading tally to 15 with his effort against Lyon, and 55 in all competitions - and can equal Cristiano Ronaldo's single-season goals record (17) with a brace against PSG.

Bayern's meeting with PSG will be the fourth major UEFA competition final between the German and French sides, with Germany successful in all three so far. It is the first time in 22 years that the final will be played out between two domestic champions.

PSG topped their group ahead of Real Madrid, they rode their luck in the last-16 against Dortmund - claiming a 3-2 aggregate win - and in their quarterfinals tie with Atalanta needing two last-gasp goals - before beating RB Leipzig 3-0 in the semis.

Bayern last met PSG in the 2017/18 group stage, winning 3-1 in Munich after losing 3-0 in Paris in Carlo Ancelotti's final game as coach. Tuchel faced Bayern 17 times as a coach for Mainz and Dortmund. His record is: W5, D2, L10.

Liverpool open Premier League title defence against Leeds as 2020-21 fixtures revealed Champions Liverpool will kick off their defence of their Premier League title in a mouthwatering clash against promoted Leeds as the 2020-21 season fixtures was released on Thursday.

In what will be a first meeting in the top flight since February 2004, the Anfield fixture provides Marcelo Bielsa's second-tier champions with the most sobering of challenges after they won the second tier by 10 points less than a month ago.

Elsewhere over the weekend of 12 September - the delayed start due to the ongoing adaptation to coronavirus Manchester City play host to Aston Villa, Manchester United go to Burnley and Chelsea visit Brighton.

Fulham, Championship play-off winners, are at home to Arsenal, while the third promoted side, West Brom, take on Leicester.

Finally on the opening weekend, Crystal Palace meet Southampton, Tottenham take on Everton, Newcastle go to West Ham and Sheffield United meet Wolves.

With the season starting in mid-September due to the enforced delay of the previous one, the 2020-21 campaign is scheduled to run through to 23 May, with the winter break put in cold storage.

By the time Liverpool host Crystal Palace on that weekend they will hope a successful title defence has been completed, though the likes of Manchester City (Everton at home), Manchester United (Wolves away) and Chelsea (Aston Villa away) will want to have something to say about that.

Midweek fixtures are at a premium as competition organisers try to fit a full season into one less month, with the first four rounds of the Carabao Cup - Premier League sides enter in the second and third rounds depending on European commitments - accounting for the first four midweek slots of the campaign.

Later in the season, FA Cup replays have been scrapped to further ease the burden on squads, while all 20 competing clubs wait to learn when they will be able to play in front of a crowd again with fixtures currently behind closed doors due to the pandemic.

City and Liverpool are scheduled to meet on the weekends of November 7 at the Etihad and February 6 at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's men do not face traditional rivals Manchester United until 2021 with the Red Devils visiting Anfield on January 16 and Liverpool heading to Old Trafford on May 1.

O

k this is one of my family’s favorite “special day” dishes. I don’t make it often or lightly and I encourage anyone trying to wow someone who likes pork ribs. It requires prep work…I mean prep work like marinade the meat for 24-30hrs work but I promise the pay off is worth it. The beginning of every good barbeque rib is the …*insert drum roll* THE MARINADE! Half a cup of ketchup, 2 spoons of brown sugar, a ¼ spoon of paprika, a pinch of salt and some more dry pepper

TATER TOTS Irish potatoes, Salt, Chicken Stock or Chicken stock cubes, Parsley, paprika and black pepper if you are feeling fancy

Method Ok now to the hard part., My Barbeque Pork Ribs

1. Peel and soak your potatoes in salted cool water

1. This is for 4-5 medium sized pork ribs (by the way this also works for beef but you will need to tenderize that first)

2. Dice the potatoes till they are about a small thumbs size in cuts

2. The first part is relatively easy…get good pork ribs rinse and season with the following… salt, a pinch of dry pepper(increase if you like pepper), chicken stock cubes and half a teaspoon of garlic and ginger.

3. Boil the diced potatoes in pre -cooked chicken stock and water for 15 minutes. I sometimes use chicken stock cubes but honestly the natural fats in a boiled chicken bind the seasoning to the potatoes in a way that nothing else can.

3. Now marinade for 24-30 hours… wait wait don’t leave… you could rush it but I promise the payoff is worth it.

4. Now strain the potatoes in a colander and put on a foiled oven tray with a good helping of oil.

4. Now for the next part you’ll need a pressure cooker… without it takes 8hrs in a slow cooker but the pressure cooker will condense the cooking time down to 2-3 hrs.

5. Toss it around and make sure the potatoes are covered in oil so they don’t stick to the pan.

5. Cut in 3 large onions (1 for every two ribs) and add water…enough to cover your ribs), Cover the pot and set to cook and go read a book…a watched pot never boils 6. After 3 hrs minutes remove from the pressure cooker and place in a saucepan set to go in the oven and remember your marinade…be generous with it…

7. On medium heat in the oven rub down your ribs and repeat the glazing process every 10-15 minutes for 30 minutes 8. Let it rest and then serve with vegetables and your tater tots.

9. Even if you don’t like pork, you can still make the tater tots and serve with chicken.

6. Roast the potatoes on high at 40 minutes turning at 10 minute intervals to help brown and when they are evenly.

7. Now at this point you will want to calm yourself because tasting at this point is something your tongue wont thank you for…gives it 5 – 10 minutes.

You are about to be looked at differently by the person you are cooking for…strike your best pose!
