THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO MOVE TO BIRMINGHAM

I

relocated to the city in 2006 at the age of 24 when I was offered a job with a Birmingham-based healthcare company. I wouldn’t say I ever had strong plans to move to the city until that point, but after so many years in my home city of Glasgow, and with the promise of a new career challenge, I decided to take the leap and move to Brum.

Every morning in the weeks leading up to my relocation I would wake up with butterflies in my stomach; was I making the right choice, would I make friends, would my new life work out? I needn’t have worried; relocating to Birmingham was probably the best decision I have ever made, personally and professionally.

When I first arrived, I was lucky enough to find myself in a great house share in Bearwood, part of the still running Graduate Community a scheme set up by a local landlord to provide opportunities for young professionals to live with people in a similar situation.

This allowed me to quickly get involved in a fantastic social scene as well as building a successful career, both of which has kept me in the city to this day. The Birmingham I found when I first relocated in 2006 was so different to the city I know and love now. It felt like it was still finding and creating its own identity.

Over the last 10 years I have been lucky enough to witness the city change, grow and really develop its own personality as the second city of the country. The civic pride among Brummies is really tangible now and rightly so. The city has an incredible vibe to it, with new bars and restaurants opening all the time and new businesses moving here.

As someone who loves eating out, I am totally spoiled by the choice of stylish bars and restaurants - whether it’s the fantastic Digbeth Dining Club (hosting the finest street food stalls every Friday night) or one of the city’s five Michelin-starred restaurants. Great bars are not in short supply either, and you’ll often find me with a pint in The Plough in Harborne or the 1000 Trades in the Jewellery Quarter.

I never thought I’d say it, but I am proud to call myself an adopted Brummie and proud to be a part of this city I now call home.

It’s an easy hop around the city The new Midland Metro system runs between Wolverhampton and Birmingham and is a fantastic way to explore places outside of the city. We even have a tram named after Heavy Metal icon Ozzy Osbourne.

Our festivals are world class Pretty much every kind of festival you could imagine is hosted here! My favourites are the free Brindleyplace Film Festival, the fab food fests during the summer, and the amazing religious celebrations for Eid al-Fitr, Holi and Diwali.

We know how to channel Italy I’ll let you in on a little secret – the Brummie canal network is rumoured to be larger than the Venice waterworks. And what we lack in gondolas we make up for in barges. Take a stroll along the canal from Brindleyplace towards the Mailbox and see for yourself.

It’s also where you can watch the ultimate battle of Brummie businesses, as they compete to become the best paddlers in the city at our annual Dragonboat Festival – all whilst being in fancy dress!

The cosiest places to relax As a student I’m always in search of great little places to relax after hitting the books. The Jewellery Quarter and Brindleyplace are perfect stress-relievers, both of which are within a 10-minute walk of our uni!

The weekends are never boring For Sunday strolls or summer picnic spots, Sutton Park, Edgbaston Reservoir and Sandwell Valley are must-goes.

There are bike trails, petting farms and a RSPB site in Sandwell.

The city sunsets are amazing The city skyline backdrop against the early evening sun is a spectacular sight. My absolute favourite sundown spot is the Library of Birmingham. The 3rd and 7th floor secret gardens provide access for all to gaze across our amazing city, hot chocolate in hand. Beautiful!

No city does Christmas like Birmingham My top 10 wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the annual Frankfurt Christmas market.

It has been a quintessential part of the Brummie Christmas for years. Amazing stalls, lights, music, and friendly people it is definitely the most wonderful time of the year!

We’re a sporty bunch Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, all mean an awful lot to the footy fans here.

Cricket and athletics are massive, too. I’m more into the adventurous sports and Edgbaston Reservoir – 10 minutes away - has great canoeing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and even paddle boarding!

Whether you’re looking to occupy tiny tots or teenagers, there’s something to keep the whole family entertained. Every part of Birmingham seems to reveal another surprise for a fun-packed day out or afternoon activity for everybody, big or small! There are plenty of attractions both free and paid-for come rain or shine. Here’s just a few ideas to keep them busy...

Animal Loving Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park in Cannon Hill Park is home to a wide range of animals and reptiles from across the world, including some endangered species. In the park there are boats available to hire on the lake, plenty of space to run about and cafes to feed hungry youngsters.

Voted ‘Birmingham’s best experience for kids’ the National SEA LIFE Centre sits at the heart of the city centre. Here you’ll find the UK’s only 360° Ocean Tunnel, which transports you to life beneath the ocean’s waves - without the need for a snorkel!

Take a visit to Dudley Zoo and see hundreds of exotic and endangered animals inhabiting an ancient wooded hillside, a rich geological history around the ruins of the 11th century Dudley Castle and the world’s largest single collection of Modernist Tecton structures.

Where Education Feels Like Fun If it’s a little history you’re after, why not take the kids back in time to see how Victorians lived in the last-surviving back-to-back houses? For mini-culture vultures, try Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery - home to thousands of beautiful works of art, or the Black Country Living Museum, one of the finest and largest open-air museums in the UK. There’s 26 acres to explore, including a village, characters and residents to chat with, trams to ride, games to play, things being made and stories to hear.

Birmingham’s newest, award-winning independent museum The Coffin Works is something truly unique. It explores the social history and cultural changes that have influenced a once highly-prestigious Jewellery Quarter firm.

Keep the kids busy bees for the whole day with a trip to mac (Midlands Art Centre) birmingham at Cannon Hill Park, the most visited free attraction in Birmingham (Visit England 2015). Here you’ll find the region’s most popular arts centre, with everything from pottery classes to the outdoor theatre.

The park itself boasts five tennis courts, a bowling green and a mini-golf course, as well as a children’s mini fun-fair. You can also take a pedalo boat on the lake during the summer season.

BIRMINGHAM’S TOWN HALL, SYMPHONY HALL, ROYAL BALLET & HIPPODROME

The Symphony Hall (home to the worldrenowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) is a must-visit. It is one of the finest concert halls in the world with outstanding acoustics, offering everything from classic performances to top bands and family concerts.

CUSTARD FACTORY

Set within 15 acres of beautifully renovated riverside factories, it was built more than 100 years ago by Alfred Bird to manufacture and market his famous invention, eggless custard.

Rejuvenated in the early 1990’s, it’s described as Birmingham’s very own version of Carnaby Street and Shoreditch all rolled into one.

Located in Digbeth, the revolutionary arts and media quarter, it truly is one of the coolest independent shopping and leisure areas in the entire region. From vintage fairs and quirky tea rooms to street food festivals, it’s well worth checking out.

BIRMINGHAM MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

Opened in 1885, BMAG is housed in a Grade II* listed city centre landmark building.

There are over 40 galleries to explore, displaying art, applied art, social history, archaeology and ethnography.

The Birmingham History collections feature prominently in the ‘Birmingham: its people, its history’ gallery, which covers the majority of the 3rd floor. There is also a diverse exhibition programme running throughout the year.

BALTI TRIANGLE

Now world renowned and served in restaurants all around the world, Birmingham is the home of the Balti. Did you know it actually originated here, too? The Balti Triangle is a dedicated area where you can find a vast array of different Asian restaurants, each with their own twist Pakistani, Indian or Bangladeshi.

The Birmingham Royal Ballet resides in the Birmingham Hippodrome (a theatre renowned for staging some of the biggest shows outside of the West End). Watch in awe at spectacular performances such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and more modern pieces too. Champagne and canapés are available if you really want to glam things up!

JEWELLERY QUARTER

Just a short walking distance away from the city centre, the world famous Jewellery Quarter is home to dozens of independent jewellery stores and workshops as well as cafes, bars and galleries. The Jewellery Quarter is one of the UK’s national epicentres for jewellery design, producing around 40% of British jewellery.

Described as a ‘national treasure’ by English Heritage, it is set in historic surroundings dating back over 250 years. Here you’ll also find the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, telling the story of jewellery production in Birmingham. At night, the area transforms itself into a vibrant social scene, with dazzling bars and many restaurants to choose from.

The Gin Vault

As the UK’s oldest working cinema, we’ve got quite the treasure, and a piece of history right on our doorstep. First opening in 1909 conjuring images from Van der Graaf generators and Tesla Coils, the cinema showed silent films with piano backing. Today, the cinema has two screens (one more than it originally housed) alongside a state-of-the-art digital projector system, showing both mainstream and independent films, which is a major draw for many viewers. The Electric also runs an education programme for students of all ages covering the history of the cinema as well as the current film industry and general film education.

THE WILDERNESS

Nestled in the heart of Birmingham city centre (a short walk from Moor Street Station) is this vegetarian and vegan restaurant that makes even the carnivores salivate at the mere thought of the tasty veggie treats within. Rather rustic with its white-washed walls, wooden tables and chairs, but certainly in keeping with their green ethos, don’t let the humble decor fool you! From their brilliant and bright butterbean and quinoa burgers to their famously moreish Kreissler pudding, The Warehouse Cafe is definitely one not to miss.

Birmingham’s culinary scene has been gifted a real gem for those foodie fanatics. The unusual setting of The Wilderness, with its moss covered walls and leafy canopy, combined with its adventurous menu created with only the finest ingredients, offers a truly unique dining experience that can’t be found anywhere else.

THE CHURCH Part of the Jewellery Quarter history for well over 100 years, The Church is still a family favourite. Its influences are drawn from the New Orleans French quarter combined with the area’s heritage, to make it into this great British pub.

This is somewhere fresh and playful bringing together a love of music, food and the vibrant culture of New Orleans.

WINTERBOURNE GARDENS One of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa garden, offering colour and interest throughout the year. Its seven acre Grade II listed garden is home to a beautiful walled garden, stream-side planting and collections of plants from China, the Americas and the alpine areas of the world. Alongside its enchanted house, public events are run throughout the year including open days, special interest tours, local heritage days and music concerts. Definitely a great spot for a day of exploring and serenity.

BIRMINGHAM WILDLIFE CONSERVATION PARK The Conservation Park is home to a unique collection of animals from across the globe, including red pandas, lemurs, reptiles, meerkats, otters, birds, wallabies and a large collection of monkeys. The park is great for a family day out with ‘Keeper for the day’ and ‘Animal Encounter’ sessions, so you too can get up close and behind the scenes access. The park has a wide collection of endangered reptiles and plays an important role in international breeding programmes, giving you the opportunity to get involved with educational and environmental projects.

THE EIGHT FOOT GROCER Just off Saint Paul’s Square hides The Eight Foot Grocer, and what makes this independent so special is that in a day and age of convenience-led supermarkets, The Eight Foot Grocer has decided that the people of Birmingham deserve better and so opened up their own grocery store. Stocking a variety of locally sourced produce, The Eight Foot Grocer has something for everyone!

Eastside Park

Eastside Park An ideal starting point for any outdoor city adventure, Eastside Park is the perfect place for a well-needed unwind! Neighbouring Millennium Point, it offers an excellent picnic spot to enjoy before or after a trip to the Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum.

Sutton Park Just six miles north of the city centre is one of the largest urban parks in Europe. Sprawling over 2,000 acres, it offers a fabulous variety of heathland, woodland, wetland, marshes and lakes – all brimming with interesting wildlife.

Add a little leisure with your pleasure and go pony trekking, ride the cycle-ways, take the kids to the play areas, or even visit the donkey sanctuary there.

Clent Hills Featuring spectacular views and only 10 miles from the city centre, Clent Hills offers up awe-inspiring views over the Cotswolds, Shropshire Hills and the Welsh borders. For the walking enthusiasts, there are miles upon miles of footpaths, bridleways and trails to explore.

Kings Heath Park Sitting peacefully in 35 acres of beautiful greenery and just a stone’s throw away from Moseley, Kings Heath Park is perfect for dog walking and picturesque picnic space. Well-tended gardens and floral borders enclose the hidden Victorian tea room, providing a relaxing spot to enjoy the natural surroundings. There’s also a bowling green, ponds and a plant nursery, as well as playgrounds for the kids!

Cannon Hill Park One of the most popular parks in the area, Cannon Hill Park really has something for everyone, ranging from two crazy golf courses with water hazards to walkways and cycle paths along the River Rea. You can spend the entire day here with year-round events at mac birmingham, and it also hosts a variety of festivals during Summer to keep the whole family entertained!

Sandwell Valley If you’re searching for an alternative Sunday stroll or summer picnic spot, Sandwell Valley is a wonderful choice! From bike hire trails to working farms and outdoor play areas, you should definitely put it on your ‘must-do’ list.

Barr Beacon

Local Nature Reserve Get away from it all at the top of one of the West Midlands’s highest peaks! Open all year round, the Barr Beacon hills are located just six miles from the city centre. For any budding landscape photographer, it’s a paradise for happy-snappers with views of 11 counties from the top! It’s a popular outdoorsy retreat for four legged friends and nature lovers too, and offers one of the most incredible places in Birmingham for stargazing.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Akamba Heritage Centre Always dreamed of travelling to Africa?

Well you don’t have to jump on the next flight out of BHX to find a bit of African culture. Just visit Akamba Heritage Centre, a garden centre with a twist! Exotic plants, huge African sculptures, an African bird walk and outside buffet seating areas will get you in the mood. Opt to leave the picnic behind and go for an African and Caribbean inspired lunch or dinner at the Tribe Eatery, located inside the quirky heritage centre.

Canal cycling Birmingham has an incredible canal network and to explore it thoroughly you’ll want to stick on a helmet! Many parks, woodland areas and hidden gems of the city can all be located from canal towpaths.

Just take a bike, a sense of adventure and somewhere to store your picnic essentials!

The National Cycle Network is a brilliant resource for searching cycle routes all around Birmingham.

Lickey Hills Easily one of Birmingham’s favourite green spaces, Lickey Hills is a stunning weekend escape. Home to 524 acres of woodland beauty to explore, the views overlooking the city are something else!

Depending on what time of year you visit, grab some chilled out sunshine vibes with a cold beverage, or warm up with a hot chocolate after an autumn stroll.

Botanical Gardens Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a wonderfully peaceful garden haven located just outside the city centre. Boasting four spectacular glasshouses, there’s everything imaginable here, including tropical rainforests, arid desert environments, bird houses, wildlife trails, a butterfly house and 15 acres of glorious gardens, flowers and foliage. COCKTAIL

LADYWOOD AND BRUNSWICK The Ladywood and Brunswick takes inspiration from what is undoubtedly the jewel in Birmingham’s culinary crown: our curry houses. The Balti Triangle is world renowned for being the home of the balti curry, served with the traditional naan bread often the size of a pillowcase (it’s not called a table naan for nothing!).

We chose to avoid the overly spiced incarnations of curries and instead focus on everybody’s favourite accompaniment: mango chutney. The cocktail is an elegant attempt to make a classic cocktail more approachable to the modern palate: it is at its core a Martinez, which is as punchy a drink as they come.

We’ve softened the whole thing out with a touch of fresh mango purée and ginger cordial, so it’s truly a drink for everyone.

In short then, you have a touch of the Indian-inspired Bombay Sapphire, balanced with mango and balti-spice infused vermouth (a type of spiced wine), and further aromatic touches with ginger and cardamom.

We couldn’t serve such a nostalgic drink in a simple glass, so instead we’ve found vintage balti buckets, which we top with crushed ice and the highlight of the meal: poppadoms and chutney!

MEET THE CREATORS… The Edgbaston has a creative team to rival even the best in the industry.

Head Bartender, James Bowker, one of the masterminds behind the hotel’s creations, recently came in the top three of ‘World Class UK Bartender of the year’, one of the largest cocktail competitions in the world, at only 23 years old.

But it doesn’t stop there… ‘The Edgbaston Sessions’ provide industry leading training for bartenders across the region and continue to work with education providers to support young professionals in the industry.

herever you go in Birmingham you are never too far from a major sporting venue – indeed sport is a real passion throughout the city.

But Birmingham’s true sporting gift is the sheer variety of participation, a celebration of the many cultures and backgrounds of our citizens.

At Edgbaston we have the favoured home venue of the England cricket team, a true modern international stadium with its striking ‘e’ shaped floodlights.

This is a city with international mixed martial arts champions, Gaelic football and hurling leagues, successful boxing gyms, major roller hockey tournaments, kabaddi competitions and a top futsal facility.

For golf enthusiasts, there are an excellent range of courses to choose from, including the world famous Belfry in Sutton Coldfield.

TR AM This is tram travel as it should be. We’ve invested in a new fleet for Midland Metro to make journeys faster, more reliable and completely integrated with all the other travel links. They run every 6-8 minutes during the day, and every 15 minutes in the evenings and Sundays.

CYCLING With miles of canals and a compact city centre, what better way to travel around Birmingham and the wider region than by bike?

Route 5 of the National Cycle Network enters Birmingham in the Frankley area and follows the Rea Valley Route to the city centre. The route passes through the heart of Birmingham, taking in major destinations including the International Convention Centre, Centenary Square and the Barclaycard Arena, before leaving the city along the Birmingham Canal towards Smethwick.

With the new High Speed Rail development, getting to London will take just 45 minutes, putting Birmingham at the heart of the UK’s rail network.

DRIVING Greater Birmingham is an extremely well-connected region, and it’s certainly an easy place to drive to, no matter where you’re coming from. Set at the heart of the UK motorway network, it’s linked by the M5, M6, M40 and M42 while the A34 and A38 further add to your options, and the M1 is less than 30 minutes away. The M6 Toll Road provides an alternative route (whilst also helping to keep through traffic away from the city centre at peak times).

BIRMINGHAM SMITHFIELD

Birmingham’s plan to regenerate a 14 hectare site at the heart of the city centre represents a once-in-ageneration opportunity to deliver a unique destination, building on the area’s rich heritage and focus for retail markets. The development will feature high quality pedestrian and cycle routes, and a series of new public spaces. This includes ‘Market Square’, the focal point for the site, around which the markets and family leisure quarter will be located.

SNOW HILL MASTERPLAN

The Snow Hill Masterplan aims to transform Birmingham’s city centre business district and win further investment from global organisations, professional and financial services firms. The 20year Masterplan provides a framework to generate over 200,000 sq m of new office space, build 4,000 residential units and boost the local economy by over £600 million a year. Changes to the district include the transformation of Snow Hill train station, and the creation of a new urban boulevard to improve accessibility to other parts of the city.

PARADISE BIRMINGHAM

The UK’s most important city centre development outside London, Paradise Birmingham is at the heart of the cultural and civic centre transformation of the city.

Creating high quality commercial, civic, retail, leisure and hotel space, the Paradise development across 17 acres will provide major improvements to pedestrian access across the city. HS2

Birmingham will be at the heart of the UK’s High Speed Rail network, providing an unprecedented opportunity to radically enhance the city’s national rail connectivity and accelerate its economic growth potential. A brand new city centre HS2 station – Birmingham Curzon – is planned to transform the city and its connectivity.

HS2 has the potential to add £1.4 billion to the local economy, as well as creating 36,000 jobs and 4,000 new homes. Plans include the development of the Curzon Street Station itself with several new neighbourhoods, offices and retail spaces.

This is a 9.2 acre development site in the city centre, designed to meet Birmingham’s demand for high quality office space. The vision will create a vibrant, class-leading and multi-use development all set within a unique and inviting public realm. Situated in Birmingham’s City Centre Enterprise Zone, the development benefits from simplified planning and reduced business rates. The new development is already home to the new head office of HSBC’s ring-fenced bank.
