INSTITUTE OF TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE Located at the heart of Greater Birmingham’s Life Science campus, the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) will be a worldclass facility that capitalises on Birmingham being one of the few centres internationally that can provide a bespoke multidisciplinary translational environment for development and delivery of clinical trials and device evaluation. As a central meeting point and working hub, it will allow clinicians, academics, patient groups and industry leaders to maximise interaction and develop productive collaborative networks.

It will facilitate the swift assessment of costeffective new drugs and medical devices to bring them to market faster and to frontline use within clinical settings. The ITM is expected to support the creation of 600 new jobs within the research community in its first five years.

The ITM is being delivered by Birmingham Health Partners, a collaboration that brings together the clinical, scientific and academic excellence of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), the University of Birmingham (UoB) and Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BCH).

Also on-site is Bizz-Inn, which provides a unique business incubation facility that accelerates the growth of companies exploring opportunities in the biomedical sector.

PEBBLE MILL Pebble Mill provides space for over 300,000 sq ft of planned medical and healthcare facilities including a new 62 bed BUPA care home, new 172,000 sq ft Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry, a private hospital and mixed-use developments. The site lies within 2 miles of the Life Sciences Economic Zone which encompasses the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), the University of Birmingham and the proposed world class Life Sciences research centre and campus in Selly Oak.

MIDLAND METROPOLITAN HOSPITAL The planned central super hospital will involve £353 million worth of public and private investment generating greater opportunities surrounding medical technology, staffing, sub-contracting and research. The hospital site will span 16 acres, and provide 670 beds and will expand on the services currently offered by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, whilst the concentration of acute specialist care will attract and retain highly skilled clinicians to the region. The hospital is not only a source of development opportunity, but also a testament to the quality of the scientific and medical environment in Greater Birmingham.

They are globally recognised as a leading provider of custom peptide synthesis, DNA synthesis, amino acid analysis and N-terminal protein sequencing. With more than 40 years experience and ISO accreditation, their manufacturing and analysis laboratory serves clients in academia, pharmaceuticals and the food industry.

SERASCIENCE LTD Serascience Limited is a specialist cancer diagnostic company established in 2011 at the University of Birmingham to develop medical devices for the diagnosis and management of patients with myeloma and related disorders, collectively known as B-cell dyscrasias.

Serascience supply a broad range of class and subclass specific anti immunoglobulin antibodies for research use. Serascience’s flagship innovative product is Seralite®, the world’s first point-of-care (POC) diagnostic device for multiple myeloma. Seralite® provides rapid diagnosis to allow early treatment that can prevent the development of severe complications and as a result can greatly improve quality and duration of life.

INANOVATE Massachusetts-based Inanovate was formed as a spin out from the University of Birmingham, leveraging a unique technology developed at the University’s Nanoscale Physics Research Laboratory.

The technology behind the company’s

powerful cancer biomarker screening invention i-Slide™ was developed by researchers at the University of Birmingham, and is used to develop highly accurate diagnostic and monitoring tests for prostate and ovarian cancer. Inanovate, which also operates in North Carolina, has recently expanded to a new location in Birmingham in order to grow its UK research operations.

BGI BGI, a leading China-based genomics organisation, is undertaking a major joint initiative with the University of Birmingham in environmental and human health research. The venture will create a worldclass research and training centre on the University’s campus that integrates stateof-the-art approaches to molecular biology.

Research will focus on organism responses to environmental change through to disease susceptibility and treatment.

CYTOX Diagnostic and prognostic service developer Cytox, creator of ADpredict™, a blood-based test for identifying Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in early symptomatic patients, has recently announced a £3.5 million investment in its Birmingham-based research activities.

Cytox has also completed a study sponsored

by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche that further demonstrates the ability of ADpredict™ as a tool to assist pharmaceutical companies in their development of new AD therapies.

BINDING SITE Binding Site is a specialist protein company committed to the research, development, manufacture and distribution of innovative, immunodiagnostic assays for the global laboratory market. For over 25 years, the business has specialised in producing highly sensitive and specific antibodies used for the detection of certain cancers and serious disorders.

In 2011, Binding Site relocated to new headquarters in Birmingham city centre, having had its roots at the University.

The company has achieved double-digit growth for many years and re-housed 600 UK-based employees into a new 6-storey sustainable building.

LIFE SCIENCES CAMPUS Close to the University of Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, development is underway for a cutting edge Life Sciences Campus. This will create up to 50,000 sqm of new floor space across a number 3-4 storey buildings in a campus setting, providing a high quality environment for new and growing businesses. The region’s strong clinical and life sciences academic centres of excellence enable today’s global healthcare challenges to be explored and addressed by experts from healthcare, academia and industry.

THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is a major international centre for research and education in medicine, biomedical sciences, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy. The College works closely with colleagues from other Colleges and NHS partners, including Birmingham Health Partners (BHP) - an exciting collaborative platform between the University, Birmingham Children's Hospital and the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust - to deliver world leading research activities in basic and clinical science.

The College consists of the following five schools: Cancer Sciences, Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Dentistry, Health and Population Sciences, and Immunity and Infection. To further strengthen the university’s position in Life Sciences, the College will be changing from five schools to eight Institutes (seven research Institutes and one of Education).

ASTON UNIVERSITY The School of Life & Health Sciences pursues interdisciplinary research extending from the laboratory to the clinic. Work ranges from molecular and cellular, through neural systems and human behaviour, to the restoration of health and the study of individuals in health care and societal settings. With funding from research councils, prestigious research foundations, charities, the European Union and industry, world-class research here is housed in state-of-the-art infrastructure within four centres of excellence: Aston Research Centre for Heath Ageing (ARCHA), Aston Brain Centre (ABC), Centre for Vision and Hearing Research (CVHR), and Aston Research Centre for Children and Young People’s Health (ARCHY). Further to this, significant investment has been made into well-equipped laboratories providing excellent facilities for teaching and research.

Aston University’s initiative for a medical school in the heart of Birmingham has recently been endorsed by Leicester Medical School.

Aston Medical School is planned to open to 60 undergraduate medical students growing to around 100 new medical students each year.

It includes a research institute focused on cardiovascular diseases,

maternity and child health allowing Aston Medical Research Institute to address the challenge of high perinatal mortality and also pre-eclampsia. The University will adopt Leicester Medical School’s new five year curriculum plan and will be based on Aston’s City Centre campus in Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY Birmingham City University is the second largest of five universities in the city and with more than 7,000 students, is one of the largest providers of nursing and healthcare education. The university has recently invested £20 million in new facilities that promise a major contribution to the health and wellbeing of Greater Birmingham.

The expansion of the University’s campus in Edgbaston will feature specialist laboratories for a newly created School of Life Sciences, offering a range of courses in health, nutrition and biomedicine.

The 10,000m² building will reinforce Birmingham City University's status as the region’s largest provider of qualified health and social care professionals to the NHS and will also provide a new home to its School of Education, supporting the development of the next generation of school teachers.

UNIVERSITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON The University of Wolverhampton is recognised as a major centre for brain tumour research. The Brain Tumour UK Neuro-Oncology Centre leads the way in identifying the genetic causes of brain tumours and the treatments to deal with them. Investment has allowed two research groups (Research Institute in Healthcare Science at the University of Wolverhampton, directed by Professor John Darling and a research group formerly at the Institute of Neurology, University College London directed by Dr Tracy Warr) to bring together specialist knowledge in order to develop new medicines for brain tumors based on a greater understanding of their fundamental biology.

The Research Institute in Healthcare Science (RIHS) is a cross-school initiative supporting interdisciplinary research with appropriate critical mass, providing a platform for the development and promotion of healthcare science research activities. Pioneering research into cancer, diabetes, immunity, disinfection and the psychology behind coping with illness are just some of the areas under investigation by RIHS.

U N-R I V A L L E D CLINICAL RESEARCH University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is one of the leading hospital trusts in Europe. The city’s state-of-the-art hospital facilities include the new £545 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), home to the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe, the largest renal transplant programme in the UK, and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) which has the world’s largest single-floor critical care unit.

The co-location of the QEHB, RCDM, University of Birmingham’s College of Medical and Dental Sciences and Birmingham Women’s Hospital on one site makes it one of the largest health care campuses in the world.
