July 1, 2020 Greetings friends, It is my sincere honor to greet you as president of this unique and special University. In a season of global challenge, we are poised to embrace change in new ways as Bushnell University. We are anchored in a mission that offers students the opportunity to seek God’s wisdom, centered on faith in Jesus Christ, to offer themselves in service to a world in desperate need of genuine hope. Christ offers hope that, “...does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Whom he has given us.” (Romans 5:5) Born of this hope, we look to the future of this enduring learning community with anticipation for increased opportunities for relevant contributions to the work of God in the world. In this re-designed issue of The Beacon magazine, we celebrate our foundation in the life of our namesake, James A. Bushnell. We reflect on our recent past and the significant expansion of our efforts. Guided by strategic planning aimed at positioning Bushnell to be its best, join me as I reflect on the ten years I have been blessed to serve as the president of this extraordinary University.

We examine the core of the University in the work of our faculty in the school of Bible and World Christianity and how the study of God’s word permeates every aspect of our students’ educational experience. Finally, you will read about Beacon alumni who are making a difference in their workplaces and communities and get a glimpse of how we have adjusted to the exercise of our mission amidst the coronavirus quarantine.

It is my hope that you will get a real sense of the heart of Bushnell University – beating strong after 125 years. Thank you for your part in this wonderful adventure.

THERE IS MUCH TO CELEBRATE ON CAMPUS IN 2020.

For 125 years, students have committed their talents, efforts, and time to discovering and answering God’s call in their lives.

At the point of this important anniversary in a new decade, we have the opportunity to reflect on what has been accomplished and to set forth a vision for what will come. We are committed to an innovative and strategic approach to developing relevant academic programs, while continuing to offer an education that best enables our students to seek the wisdom of God, centered on faith in Jesus, leading to lives of fruitful service.

After I took office in 2010, the University instituted a purposeful, systematic, and comprehensive strategic planning process that resulted in the publication of the strategic plan, Clear Vision 2020. The early strategic initiatives focused heavily upon creating clarity and consensus regarding our institutional identity; its mission, vision, and values along with the identification of core themes, objectives, and measurements. These initiatives function as a planning guide for departments and services to improve the institution in several targeted areas.

We have always been committed to the integration of faith and learning inside and outside the classroom.

We are committed to employing faculty and staff who demonstrate a maturing and engaged Christian faith in their personal and professional lives. As an institution of liberal arts and professional studies, we recognize that all truth is God’s truth. As Beacons, we actively engage opportunities to serve God and to share the Gospel by service to the Church, the local community, our region, and the world.

As Bushnell University, we will continue to be centered on our Christian identity. Associated with the churches of the Stone-Campbell/Restoration Movement, and in relationship with the whole Christian family, we affirm the centrality of Christ, the Son of the Living God, and we proclaim Him Lord and Savior. We receive the Bible as Holy Scripture. We expect God to speak to the world today through the words of Scripture by the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe that the love of God, expressed in Jesus Christ and accessed by faith, has the power to change lives. Enhance Our Academic Quality and Reputation The implementation of these comprehensive strategies allowed us to obtain a number of programmatic accreditations or reaccreditations, especially in mental health counseling, nursing, teacher education, and business. We also developed and launched several strategic academic programs.

We have launched a number of important initiatives over the past several years aimed at honoring the faculty and staff who animate our institution. We’ve implemented a confidential platform for feedback to senior administrators, improving awareness and communication. We’ve increased employee meetings to communicate board actions and campus developments.

We’ve launched a Faculty Colloquium, implemented social gatherings, promoted faculty research and scholarship, grown in our identification and celebration of employee achievements, and made conscientious efforts to increase racial and ethnic diversity in our faculty and staff. The outcome is improved employee satisfaction and retention.

As members of the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) through the Council of Independent Colleges, we have been able to take advantage of three different NetVUE grants ($120,000 total) to implement a robust and theological reflection on professional calling.

Almost every undergraduate program has implemented a discipline-specific course on integrating faith and vocation.

Additionally, the Rhee Honors Program attracts academically proficient students and encourages creativity and excellence. Named in honor of our beloved Academic Dean Emeritus, Dr. Song Nai Rhee, the program provides a course of honors curriculum imbedded within academic

majors and in addition drew thirty new students in fall of 2019, admitted with “Honors at Entrance� status.

Finally, advancements motivated by this strategic goal have positioned the University for success and growth with the organization of the academic enterprise into seven schools. Under the umbrella of Bushnell University now exist Northwest Christian College (encompassing the schools of Arts & Sciences, Bible & World Christianity, and Music & Performing Arts), the School of Business, Leadership, & Technology, the School of Education, the School of Nursing, and the School of Psychology & Counseling.

Advance Our Financial Sustainability New and sophisticated tools help us determine at-risk areas of operation in need of fiscal improvement, as well as growth areas that would benefit still more from increased investment. We’ve grown more adept at comparing our operation with similar institutions, helping us make budget decisions and preserve accountability and sustainability. Along the way, we have achieved and exceed the financial score established by the US Department of Education.

We’ve grown the operating budget from $12 to $18 million over the past 10 years.

We now employ 106 full-time employees, up from 78 in 2010. We’ve gone from deficit spending in the previous decade to fully funding depreciation (a first in the history of our institution), providing both a cushion and a resource for proactive improvements. All of this constitutes a $3.4 million swing in budget to revenue spending. To deepen our financial roots, our endowment has grown from $10 million to $17 million in recent years.

Grow Our Enrollment A comprehensive enrollment plan, including marketing, website, and social media, has allowed us to be more effective at communicating our institutional story.

As we’ve implemented new academic and co-curricular programs, we’ve attracted new student populations.

A full track and field program, mission trips, expanded study abroad offerings, and our new ROTC (in partnership with the U of O) have helped. We’ve restructured academic advising and career planning departments and grown our athletic offerings.

All of this focus has achieved record enrollment in each successive year, with the exception of 2011. Enrollment growth from roughly 500 to 800 students has been incremental and, we believe, will be sustainable.

Improve Our Campus Capacity A major capacity study of our current footprint resulted in a comprehensive Campus Master Plan. Implemented in phases, the completed plan will eventually yield capacity for 2500 traditional students. In recent years, we have purchased and renovated Works Village (the Hilyard Apartment Complex) and Siefke Hall (755 E. 11th Avenue). We have constructed science lab facilities to support new and growing science majors. We renovated Richardson Hall (the School of Professional Studies building), Burke-Griffeth dormitory, the cafeteria, and the Kellenberger Library.

We’ve also secured more student housing for our growing resident population, which has more than doubled in the past ten years. Gains in our annual operating budget have enabled us to upgrade facilities and address maintenance of the physical plant. A significant grant from the Murdock Foundation funds an upgraded Student Information System, set to go live in June of 2020.

Deepen Our Culture of Innovation and Accountability

This university thrives on innovation.

We’ve formed strategic partnerships with the business and technology communities, crafted articulation agreements with Oregon community colleges, and added new concentrations under various degree offerings.

Co-curricular programs are under steady assessment and showing signs of growth in excellence and spiritual nurture.

Our musicians and worship leaders grow in numbers and skillsets, while a new and growing cast of pastors and ministry leaders ready themselves to guide faith ventures around the world. We won our first national team championship at the NAIA level (women’s cross country in 2016), along with numerous conference championships.

Two individual track and field student-athletes brought home national championships in their specialties. Our Esports program is the first of its kind in Oregon, competing with NCAA Division 1 schools around the country.

And we’ve fully implemented plans for a name change to Bushnell University, honoring one of our founders and facilitating numerous aspects of our strategic goals.

GOING FORWARD As we create our next strategic plan amidst the ambiguities presented by the coronavirus, we embrace the future with the confidence that our faith in Jesus Christ provides. Still in progress, our next plan will follow the structure of the previous one with some familiar and some new areas of focus: 1.

This bold move will help us change perception from a small, regional college with limited academic programs toward a more robust, Christ-centered university. It will also help us enhance our academic reputation at both the undergraduate and graduate levels while we embark on bold plans for capital growth and campus development.

For this whole season of progress, I’ve felt the support and friendship of a large and growing community of Crusaders and Beacons. Thank you for this privileged role at such an extraordinary place.

Meet the Faculty of the School of Bible & World Christianity

B

ible and ministry studies at Bushnell University are much more than simply one academic department among others. The School of Bible and World Christianity lives at the center of the University, informing and guiding every aspect of the academic life of the institution.

Through curricular and co-curricular activities (chapel, small groups, mission trips, discernment retreats, service projects, etc.), the School of

Bible & World Christianity provides opportunities for students to view their studies through the lens of ministry and mission. Within the general education curriculum that all undergraduate students take, Bible courses constitute the largest single block of any discipline.

But that’s only the beginning of the story. Faculty from the school collaborate with program faculty

across all schools and academic disciplines to integrate theological reflection within those diverse majors and professional pathways.

The result is that all Bushnell students, regardless of individual career pathways, are challenged and equipped to discover God’s call in their lives and to engage in their respective careers as faithful servants of Christ and of Christ’s church.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE DEAN Agam D. Iheanyi-Igwe, Ph.D. Associate Dean of Bible & World Christianity Associate Professor of Bible & World Christianity

D

r. Iheanyi-Igwe seeks to equip leaders who think theologically for the benefit of the global church and brings this passion to his missions, Bible, and theology classes at Bushnell.

When he is not having theological conversations with students, he provides leadership for the Center for World Christianity which helps our community wrestle with what it means to follow Jesus in today’s world. Whether situated in pre-Christian or post-Christian societies, the Christian faith is fundamentally missional and unified across the world not by cultural, sociological, or economic similarities, but by communities marked by faith in Jesus. The Center acknowledges this global nature of Christianity and seeks to facilitate engagement with our sisters and brothers in the global Christian church. The Center for World Christianity organizes the annual Missions Awareness Week where missionaries and agency representatives from around the globe interact directly with our community through in-class visits and a multi-day Missions Fair. This sustained reflection on missions through the week accompanies a Missions Conference that helps provide thought leadership for the task of global missions and facilitate research on the global Christian church.

MEET THE FACULTY

A.J. Swoboda, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Bible & World Christianity

F

or the last two decades, Dr. Swoboda has given his attention to pastoral work, teaching, and writing. He has a passion for helping to write resources that serve the church in fluid culture— particularly when it comes to what he calls “street theology” (theology of those on the ground). His writings reflect this commitment to helping nurture the theological imagination of Christians in the workplace, in the mission field, and in their personal lives. Over the last ten years, Dr. Swoboda has co-authored or authored 10 books and dozens of articles.

His most recent book, Subversive Sabbath, looks at the theology and practice of the Sabbath. The results

of the work garnered an award for “Spiritual Formation Book of the Year” from Christianity Today and runner-up for “Book of the Year”. He recently submitted his manuscript on the topic of doubt to the publisher entitled, After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith Without Losing It. The book is due to be released in Spring of 2021. He continues to be excited to write for the church and serve the needs of Christians following Jesus in the post-modern, post-Christian world. He was recently honored at the 2020 Honors Convocation by the Associated Students of Bushnell University as the student body’s choice of “Faculty Member of the Year”.

Melisa Ortiz Berry, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of History & World Christianity

L

ast fall we welcomed Dr. Melisa Ortiz Berry as our Assistant Professor of History and World Christianity. Her classes have ranged from Kione Greek and History of Christianity to Western Civilization. While in her personal life Dr. Berry hosts a daily Bible reading and prayer page on Facebook, at Bushnell she has brought an exciting pedagogical development to our history classes called “Reacting to the Past.” This is a role-playing game that immerses students into an active learning environment. Here, students become historical figures from ancient Athens or the French Revolution and must make speeches, form political alliances, and make historically and culturally accurate decisions. Dr. Berry also applied for and was awarded two NetVUE

grants to engage in conversations about vocation and calling with her Greek and history students. These conversations took place everywhere from the Original Pancake House to her living room. Looking to the future, Dr. Berry is organizing a trip to Israel for the summer of 2022. The two classes offered will be the Bible and Archeology and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Students will tour archeological sites, hike the Jesus Trail, and get immersed in the world of Jesus and modernday Israel. Dr. Berry also presented twice at the national conference for the American Academy of Religion and has been working toward the publication of a book chapter called, “How Do Women Become Lost to History? Recovering Nazarene Minister Bertha Mae Lillenas.”

MEET THE FACULTY

Dennis R. Lindsay, Dr. Theol.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Professor of Biblical Studies

F

or over three decades Dr. Lindsay has focused his scholarly research on providing a clear understanding of what the New Testament authors meant when they talked about faith in Christ. In biblical-theological perspective, faith is not so much about what people believe, but much more about whom people believe. In other words, the faith language of the Bible refers primarily to a faithful relationship— an all-encompassing, life-engaging, dogged-determination to be and to stay in relationship with Jesus. For the past twenty years Dr. Lindsay has integrated this scholarship into the life of Bushnell University. In his role as Vice President for Academic Affairs,

Dr. Lindsay has played a significant role in expanding the faculty and academic offerings. His commitment to Bushnell’s mission informs his practice. Dr. Lindsay explains, “When recruiting and hiring faculty and staff, Bushnell looks for men and women who demonstrate a life-encompassing, faithful relationship with Christ. This commitment further plays itself out in the classroom where we encourage students to integrate faith and learning by modeling for them what a faithful relationship with Christ looks like in any given academic discipline or career calling.” Dr. Lindsay also provides leadership for Bushnell’s monthly staff and faculty chapel service and devotional time.

Campus Pastor Assistant Professor of Bible & World Christianity

“

astor Troy” directs Campus Ministry, where students are engaged in small group Bible studies, deployed for outreach in our local community, and trained to serve on global mission teams. He coordinates themes and speakers and collaborates with student worship teams for twice-weekly Chapel gatherings. He has led short-term mission teams for over 30 years, and offers students missional vision for the global church. For 10 years, Troy has taught in our unique courses on helping students to discover their callings and helped Bushnell acquire a grant on the Theological Exploration

of Calling. Troy has pastored two church plants in California and his passion for church health and planting is evident in his teaching and training of this next generation of church leaders. Having traveled the “Christian Church Western Road” (from Hope International University, to William Jessup University, to Bushnell University), Troy has a deep history and network in the Stone-Campbell Movement.

He has served as a president and board member for the Oregon Christian Convention and as a coach for churches seeking their next season of kingdom flourishing.

A SOLID AND STRONG NEW CHAPTER

I

t is and has been a joy to serve Northwest Christian University, soon to be Bushnell University, as an elected member of the Board of Trustees since 2016. I also treasure my years as a student and my close association with the University for fifty years.

Change has always been hard and some chapters very hard. Decades ago, our churches and culture were in a very different time in history. Like other faithbased institutions in America, many Restoration Movement churches and colleges were in a slow decline. The reasons were many. Northwest Christian College survived, thanks to leaders like Dr. James E. Womack. Jim understood that the College could no longer exist with dwindling financial support and fewer potential students from supporting churches. His vision was to continue “educating workers for Christ and the Church” by expanding and broadening our mission; to get beyond the College and church walls to tell the story, to share the successes, to cast a vision, and open new possibilities for businesses and individuals to invest in future students who desired a Christian education for all facets of life.

Still the “ best College on Pacific Shore.”

Now the University educates students for Christian witness in countless professional areas.

Along with preparing preachers, missionaries, Christian educators, and musicians for the church, graduates share Christ in businesses, corporations, classrooms, hospitals, and innovative mission fields around the world.

As for preparing workers for God’s church, some wonder, “Is the college what it used to be?” I personally visit with students twice a year on campus. I attend student chapel services in the Morse Center and Faculty/Staff worship in the beautifully renovated chapel. I see an even deeper commitment to Christ, the Christian life, and Christian higher education through the leadership of Jim Womack’s son, Dr. Joseph Womack, along with his exceptional team of vice presidents, faculty, and staff. There is no doubt whatsoever that the many greats of our past prepared us for a solid and strong new chapter as Bushnell University.

Again, change is hard. Not everyone will like this change. But change is God-designed. The University no longer has 300 students, but over 800, thanks to prayerful, forward-thinking leaders and countless donors from around the world. While it was impossible to sit down with the thousands of alumni who attended under our many names, leaders prayed, met together, and consulted with many alumni, former trustees, major donors, and strategic partners in ministry and industry. We became convinced that God is setting good things in motion.

Now I am a proud graduate of Northwest Christian College at Bushnell University.

James Bushnell gave his all – prayers, finances, influence, hard work, and even his own personal library – so that Eugene Divinity School, Eugene Bible University, Eugene Bible College, Northwest Christian College, Northwest Christian University, and now Bushnell University can advance Christ’s Kingdom into all the world.

President Womack has clearly spelled out the significant reasons for this change in a recent letter to alumni and friends. As a graduate and current Trustee, my sole desire and prayer is for the ongoing growth and development of Bushnell University, still the “best College on Pacific Shore.” Bushnell University is primed for phenomenal growth in the 21st century, continuing to fulfill its commitment to educating women and men for the work of Christ in our world – in the Church and all of life.

JAMES A. BUSHNELL A Lifetime of Wisdom, Faith, and Service

During a multi-year exploratory process, University leaders talked to churches, alumni, donors, guidance counselors, prospective students, and others. Those conversations, along with significant market research and a lot of prayer, the Board of Trustees decided that a new “umbrella” moniker would enhance enrollment, alleviate name confusion, assist with job placement, and promote the growing breadth of University programs. In pursuit of a name that would meet those goals while representing our unchanging values and rich history, the discovery process led all the way back to our very beginnings; to James Addison Bushnell, the first president of the new institution’s Board of Regents.

He was a person who exhibited characteristics of faith, tenacity, humility, generosity, and innovation – all of which illustrate the heart of this University. The following is his story, with portions told in his words.

James Addison Bushnell was born on July 27, 1826 in Chautauqua County, N.Y. His family moved to Erie County, Pennsylvania, and then on to the Western Reserve, now the state of Ohio. They lived in several communities there until the death of his father, Daniel, in 1842.

In 1844, he and his family moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where young J.A. (now 16) began work as a cooper (flask and cask maker) in Hannibal. He was baptized in 1847, and later left us a record of his thinking on the matter. >

“Here … in the winter made a public profession of faith in a crucified Savior. Was buried with him in the waters of the Mississippi and arose to walk in a new life. A step I have never regretted having taken and am still after a lapse of forty-six, trying to live faithful to the cause of him who [I] then professed to love.”

After purchasing eighty acres in Adair County, he married Elizabeth Adkins in 1849 and built a home on their land.

Their first child, Charles Alvah, was born there in 1851.

In the spring of 1852, “in common with others started for the New Eldorado” (a reference to the California gold rush), J.A. left his wife and infant son in the care of relatives and set off in the company of two other men for the unknowns of the West.

“The prairie grass had just started to grow on the bare hills and prairies of Kansas when we left civilized life behind us and turned our faces toward the setting sun – we commenced the long journey across the Plains.”

Meeting others along the way, they decided to change their destination from California to the Oregon territory, crossing what is now Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho, up and over the divide into the Snake River Valley, over the Blue Mountains, and down the mighty Columbia toward old Fort Hall – the trading post of the Hudson Bay Co. in Vancouver, Washington. They moved on to Oregon City, Salem, the Umpqua Valley, and Winchester, before settling in the gold mines of Jacksonville in what is now Southern Oregon.

“Here we stayed and prospected for some time, going over onto Applegate creek, but of course knowing nothing about mining we had no success.”

They decided to try their luck in Shasta City, California, arriving there in October, seven months after leaving Missouri. Unprepared and facing a difficult winter in the mountains, they had a serendipitous and lifesaving encounter with J.A.’s brother, William, whom he hadn’t seen or heard from in years. With the aid of William’s experience,

They traversed rivers, encountered Native Americans for the first time, and survived great hardships, including freezing storms, quicksand, and cholera. Pioneers died “in virulent form, hundreds of them leaving their bones along the trail, buried in unknown graves.”

they survived the winter and set off for the Sacramento River in the spring. Having some success prospecting the Sacramento (a little over $500 worth of gold), J.A. determined he had enough money to return to his family.

He walked down the mountain to Red Bluff, where he took a boat to Sacramento, and another to San Francisco.

Arriving in San Francisco, J.A. boarded the Columbia bound for Portland. Then he walked to Salem, hoping to find news about his family. Getting no news there, he walked to Springfield with a man who had been with him since Panama. On November 1, following sixty days of travel, he parted with his friend near Springfield.

“I left my companion. It was the last time I ever met him, which I have often earnestly desired to do, not only because of his friendship, but because of my indebtedness to him for financial aid. Had paid my last dime for lodgings the night before and now struck out afoot and alone and penniless and hoped to find or hear from my family.”

Home at last in August of 1853, J.A. was informed by his brother-in-law, Frank Adkins, that his wife, child, mother, sister, and brothers had not heard from J.A. for some time and departed three months earlier for the Oregon Territory.

“My feelings can be better imagined than described … After traveling over fifteen-thousand miles to meet my loved ones, expecting to clasp them to my heart only to learn that they were far away to meet me, was almost more than I could bear. Was for a while completely stunned, but there was nothing to do but to return the way I had come…”

He traveled back the way he had just come to New York.

He was nearly shipwrecked aboard the steamship Georgia, caught in a storm on its way for Panama.

“As the ship neared the harbor (in Norfolk, VA) and all the danger had passed the crew and officers with the passengers assembled on the quarter deck, to give thanks to God for preserving our lives and bringing us safe to harbor. It was a scene long to be remembered.”

Arriving in Springfield late and tired, J.A. took refuge in the home of Mahlon Harlow, founder of First Baptist Church in Eugene. He awoke the next morning to the news that Mahlon had found J.A.’s family. After a separation of twenty months, including three trips across the continent, J.A. and Elizabeth Bushnell were reunited. He learned then that Elizabeth and the family had been part of the infamous “lost wagon train” that had taken a near-tragically unproven route to the Willamette Valley over the Cascades through what is now La Pine.

The reunited family settled on a donation land claim near what is now Junction City and hastily built an “apology for a house”, where they spent a dreary winter while gradually improving their property. His first daughter, Lucy, was born in 1854 and the Bushnells helped build a community around them with the fervor of missionaries in a new land. They were a part of founding the First Christian Church of Clear Lake, near where the Eugene Airport is now sits. This later became the Alvadore Christian Church, where J.A. served as deacon. They built the first school in the area, with J.A. its first teacher.

“The school progressed from six students and no property to an attendance in all departments of 147, with four good buildings and assets of over $150,000, with its representatives preaching in every state on the coast.”

By 1864, J.A. was selected sergeant of the area’s Union Cavalry, though never called upon to fight in the Civil War. A staunch abolitionist, J.A. founded and funded the Christian Church on Grand Prairie (Junction City) that was quickly split in two over the question of war and emancipation of slaves. He wrote of the incident and the preacher he employed at Grand Prairie the following solace, “He lived to see and deplore his conduct in this crisis of our country’s history.”

A third son, George Addison, was born. Little Willie passed away that same year. J.A. was excited to add 100 acres to the ranch in 1867 and build a new house, larger barns, and a silo. The following spring, his wife Elizabeth grew ill with “consumption” [tuberculosis].

“For two months never got more than two hours of sleep at any one time but God sustained me and fulfilled to the letter his promise that, as thy day, so shall thy strength be. The night of January 2, 1868 she closed her eyes for the last time on earth …

Three of our little one’s had gone on before and she only followed them to the better land where sickness, sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more, and where I humbly hope to meet them when the dreams of life are fled.”

In 1870, J.A. married again to Sarah Page, “a partner of all my joys and sorrows …” In 1871, Charles Alvah died of tuberculosis after spending two years at the Christian college in Monmouth (now Western Oregon University).

His second daughter, Ursula, was born in September of 1857 but died just two days later. “…it was one of the greatest trials of my life to give her up, my first great trial so great, would most gladly have gone with her if it had been God’s will …

I have had greater trials since then but none which seemed to tend my very heart strings like this.”

In July of that year, little Willie was born. By 1861, J.A. had built a significant farming and ranching operation, which was almost destroyed that fall and winter in a flood that covered the entire valley floor. Though they lost all their cattle and all but two horses, J.A. had designed his barns to hold the grain off the ground. In the entire valley, only the Bushnell’s produce was preserved. As a result, they gave great aid to other farmers in an epic drama of Joseph-like proportion.

The night before he died he asked me to read him what Christ said about the many mansions and going to prepare a place for us and he was very much comforted… the grave held no terror for him.”

In 1874, J.A. built a crop warehouse in Junction City and the farmers soon filled it to overflowing. The following year he built a new house in town near the warehouse and was elected President of the town council. That same year, a son Albert was born who didn’t survive his infancy.

Another daughter, Mary, came in 1878, followed quickly by sons Henry and Walter. In 1884, the First Church of Christ was organized under J.A.’s leadership as an elder.

That year they were devastated by another great flood.

Walter became sick with diphtheria and died just before Christmas. Mary died five days later. Young Addison passed away 10 days later.

“I trust, in immortal bloom in that land where there is no sickness, sorrow, pain or death … that their angel spirits do always behold the loving face of our Father who is heaven and that His kind in hand will gather the lambs into his arms.”

In the following years, J.A. and his family traveled much of the Northwest. He served as president of the Lane County Evangelistic Board and several years as secretary of the Oregon Christian Convention. He was vice president of the State Missionary Board and founded the first bank in Junction City, serving as its president. J.A. started the first Chamber of Commerce in the area and built a hotel and opera house, which was the finest to be found between Seattle and San Francisco according to several publications. It was destroyed by fire in 1915.

Rooted in his passion for Christian education, J.A. Bushnell collaborated with Eugene Sanderson to found Eugene Divinity School in 1895, alongside the University of Oregon. J.A. served on the committee to canvas the initial funds and was elected president of the Board of Regents, a position he held for seventeen years until his death in 1912.

J.A. led the funding and preparation for the Goodrich Building in 1908 and donated the family library to the school. He wrote freely of his appreciation for the ministry of the school, as well as the changing of its name to Eugene Bible University as fitting, since the school progressed from six students and no property to “an attendance in all departments of 147, with four good buildings and assets of over $150,000, with its representatives preaching in every state on the coast.”

His final entry in his journal tells about his love for the University.

“Was elected to fill the same place for the coming three years. I may be able to fill it but do not in the least expect to. God alone knows if it is His will that I should tarry here three years longer – I shall be glad, but if not it shall be the same. Held our meetings in the Bushnell Library … in the fine stone building now containing 4,000 volumes. It is supposed this will keep in memory the name of J.A. Bushnell when he is dead and otherwise forgotten – it is well – I’ve never been ashamed of my record.

It will matter little to me if my name is only in the Lamb’s Book of Life but for my children’s sake may they remember me in love and gratitude.”

J.A. Bushnell was buried between Eugene and Junction City in Luper Cemetery—fittingly located on what is now Beacon Drive—with nearly all of his extended family buried beside him.

Members of his family have been connected to the University for the entirety of our history, including great, great nephew Frank Morse and his wife, Linda.

A longstanding past Board of Trustees chair and benefactor to the University, Frank commented, “The naming of institutions of higher education often reflect references to place. When naming is a reference to a person, that person must in every way have reflected the values and purpose of the institution. Understanding the origins of Northwest Christian University, the contributions of J.A. Bushnell at its very beginning, and its place now as a leading faith-centered university of liberal arts and professional studies, I cannot think of a more fitting name than Bushnell University.”

Because of J.A. Bushnell’s remarkable journey in life, his deep love for Elizabeth, Sarah and family, his strength in the face of hardship, his constant reflection of God’s mercy, his commitment to community, church, and education, the sixth and lasting name of this institution will be Bushnell University as of July 1, 2020.

Bill was a 1943 graduate of the University and a respected and beloved professor of Bible and history from 1947 until his retirement in 1974. He is also referred to as the “Father of Athletics” since he was the driving force behind developing the first program in men’s basketball and organizing the Willamette Christian Collegiate Conference. Dr. Richardson’s son, Dr. John Richardson (a 1973 graduate and University trustee) shared that “Dad endorsed the college’s Christ-centered stance, its commitment to the formation of the whole person, and to the preparation of students to serve Christ in various vocations. Were he alive today, I believe he would be humbled by this recognition, but also honored to have his name associated with the institution he loved and served for so many years.” Dr. Richardson passed away in 2010.

Dr. Siefke earned his bachelor’s degree from the University in 1929 followed by a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1932. He was a professor of Bible and Practical Theology and Academic Dean during a long career at the school, beginning in 1944 and spanning three decades.

Thelma Siefke was a 1930 graduate and began teaching Christian education at the University in 1943, eventually serving as the chair of the education department and providing leadership and service until her retirement in 1973. Both were profoundly influential on the campus, in their church, and within the local community. Dr. Siefke passed away in 2002 and Thelma passed away in 2005. Several scholarships were established in their name, primarily for the purpose of encouraging biblical scholarship, ministry, and the art of preaching.

Marilyn Works

Herb and Marilyn Works have been beloved members of the Bushnell community since they were students in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Professor Herb Works was a 1961 graduate and subsequently professor of Bible, speech, and missions from 1964 – 1981. He was a central figure in equipping and sending out students and graduates as missionaries all over the world.

Dr. Works passed away in 2017.

Marilyn Works was a 1961 graduate, taught classes, and mentored many students. Marilyn recalls fondly that when the Works arrived on campus “Dr. Griffeth offered us an apartment, but was also asking us to be house parents to 25 young women. We were surprised, but it was a great joy.” Many alumni still point to both Herb and Marilyn as a significant influence on their lives while students.

Wisdom, Faith, Service Online Bushnell Response to COVID-19

The events of Spring 2020 around the globe challenged students, staff, faculty, administrators, and coaches to think creatively about what it looks like to fulfill our mission in new and unique ways. Here are a few examples of what it’s like to live as Beacons in a digital world.

VIRTUAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT Career appointments were conducted virtually and students completed internships remotely. Beacons learned to leverage technology to collaborate and communicate digitally, a relevant and critical skill as they prepare for the evolving workforce.

These unprecedented times provide an even richer training ground to nurture and encourage students to discover their gifts and discern God’s call in their lives.

Together, students will emerge wiser, more resilient, and more creative.

NO FINAL SEASON: CELEBRATING SENIOR ATHLETES All spring athletes faced deep disappointment with the cancellation of their athletic season, but seniors lost the opportunity to compete in their final season. In lieu of senior night, the Department of Athletics staff and coaches provided each senior a day to shine online with their very own digital “Senior Day.” Photos of key athletic moments, meaningful stories and senior quotes on all Beacon social media sites commemorated their achievements as student athletes.

CAMPUS LIFE: COMING TOGETHER WHILE LIVING APART Community is the heart of what it means to be a Beacon. In spite of students scattering all over the nation (and the world), the Student Programs and Residential Life teams continued to serve both those students who remained on campus and those who returned home. Campus events took new form, including livestreamed talent shows, mini-concerts, and online movie nights. Regardless of their location, Resident Assistants provided consistency, support, and empathy for their peers. These collective efforts allowed the shared experience of Beacon Life in a challenging time.

FEEDING THE SOUL: SPIRITUAL GROWTH IN CRISIS Campus ministry provided online spiritual engagement opportunities through the spring semester. Pastor Troy Dean prepared an online devotional series on Instagram and facilitated special online worship services during Holy Week.

A Virtual Prayer Wall was created for students to share prayer requests and support one another in prayer. Although mission trips were cancelled, they will resume as travel restrictions are lifted and they can be safely rescheduled.

KEEPING MENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY The campus mental health clinic was able to continue the important work of mental health care through TeleHealth counseling services. The current crisis brings added psychological stress to those already struggling, therefore this vital service remains a priority. The clinic counselors offer trauma-informed care to assist individuals in resiliency development and provide their services with flexibility and grace.

Steve Wilhite ’92 Senior Pastor, Lake Tapps Christian Church Bonney Lake, WA

L

iving a life of faith means drinking in living water and being nourished by the closeness of Jesus. For pastor Steve Wilhite, being willing to listen to the Lord and move according to His call has guided his ministry journey over the years.

During his time on campus, Steve experienced the contagious passion of faculty members who taught his missions courses. For Steve, college was a safe space to ask questions and develop answers for faith, instead of just “having” faith. He is convinced

that “time affords a perspective that allows one to see how the dots are connected, the lives changed by ministry, and the patience of God as we figure it out.” After 17 years of serving as a senior minister, Steve is transitioning out of full-time pastoral ministry. Stepping out in faith, he continues to search for ways to reach unchurched people, looking for places to have conversations and be in relationship with those who need to hear the message of the Gospel.

Rosa (Schmidt) Wright ’18 High School Math Teacher, Nome, AK

N

ot finishing what you start is not an option. After graduation, Rosa Wright committed to a two-year teaching assignment in the remote village of Elim, in her home state of Alaska. Rosa jumped right in, teaching 7th-9th grade math, coaching cross country and skiing, advising Battle of the Books and student government, and providing tutoring and help in elementary grades – all while working on a master’s degree in education through the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. For someone

who hated and struggled with math in high school, Rosa developed a newfound love for it in college. Inspired by current math professor Dr. Connie Wilmarth, she kept taking math class after math class, eventually switching to secondary education and declaring mathematics as a minor. As she moves to Nome this summer to begin a new high school teaching position, Rosa wants her students to understand how hard things were for her and to be able to inspire and motivate those who aren’t naturally talented to keep at it.

Dianne (Gregory) McIntosh ’81 – ’83 Administrator, Oregon Christian Convention, Turner, OR

J

oining the staff of the Convention started as “filling a gap.” Ten years later, Dianne McIntosh is still serving and living out her calling to build up the body of Christ.

Having attended her first Convention at age one, she was acutely aware from childhood of the convergence of different ways of thinking. Both then and now, she views the Convention as the creation of a town that represents the dynamic unity found in Christ.

Fulfilling various roles over the years, from volunteer to board member,

children’s program coordinator to registrar, she is uniquely equipped to serve in her current position. Often behind the scenes, Dianne sees her role as one of support and facilitation.

She ensures that others have what they need to succeed while keeping things flowing smoothly. She prays specifically, watching God respond in big ways. She finds herself in the same supportive role in her personal life as she is now a parent to a Bushnell University sophomore, Annalee McIntosh ’23.

W

hen presented with the opportunity to give back, Josh Wark believes it is a brand’s responsibility to do so, especially in a time of need.

Presenting a diverse resume that started with Teach for America and pivoted to business and marketing, Josh completed culinary school and a stint in film production along the way. Landing most recently at OFD Foods, which donated 36,000 meals to the mid-Willamette Valley community

during the novel coronavirus pandemic, Josh recognizes the value of giving back. Those early years in teaching exposed him to the economic disparity that exists and how circumstances alone can create significant hardships and challenges for people. Holding fast to his faith, his actions are a reflection of his values. As he leads with integrity and compassion, Josh seeks to leave a legacy in the things he impacts and people he mentors.

Erik Quick-Warner ’10 Founder and Creative Director, Quip, Eugene, OR

C

reative, authentic, with the drive of an entrepreneur, Erik Quick-Warner began his company in an undergraduate business class. A degree in accounting led to a career in the field but he couldn’t shake the creative itch and returned to the innovative work of brand development. Familiar with the ins-and-outs of photo booths (after building one for his own wedding), Erik and his wife Brittany bought a VW Bus and turned it into a mobile photo booth, a trendy addition to any wedding or event. This company, Blue

Bus Creatives, became the springboard for Quip as it is today–a top notch, full service creative agency. What inspires Erik and his team is much deeper and more real than beautiful videos or sleek websites. What matters to Quip is authenticity. They are experts in the science of storytelling and their method is a holistic and meaningful connection between brand and audience. Erik and his wife Brittany (who serves as president and CEO of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce) are a driving force for innovation in everything they do.

WHEN PLANS ERUPT

An Open Letter to the Class of 2020 WRITTEN BY DR. KEITH POTTER ’84, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADVANCEMENT

T

here’s nothing quite like a senior year. As a student, it’s time for advanced and applied learning at the highest undergraduate level. On campus, it means knowing the ropes, basking in familiarity, enjoying some status.

For athletes and musicians, it’s a time to reflect on careers spent refining an art, and it’s time to wonder how those investments in excellence will pay off. For everyone, there’s that conflicting eagerness to finish and move on pushing against a sentimental sorrow to see it all end. And then there’s commencement and all associated celebrations.

So how does it feel to have the senior year erupt under a cloud of circumstances beyond our control? It hurts.

It’s easy to feel cheated. To our graduating Beacons, our whole community is truly sorry for moments missed and experiences lost.

For me, this feels personal. I don’t pretend that my story is the same, but it’s certainly familiar. Growing up in Longview, Washington, at the foot of Mt. St. Helens, I saw that docile mountain as a quiet wonderland of family fun. We climbed the mountain and boated on Spirit Lake in its shadow.

The ridiculous snowcapped viewpoint from YMCA Camp was a family treasure.

That was a regional disaster that caught the world’s attention. You, sadly, are part of a global pandemic—a much bigger deal. But here are a few relevant and positive takeaways from a smaller but stark experience.

First, when commencement finally came, it was a grand reunion. We were so glad to see each other, to flip our tassels, and to close out our unique senior experience. You’ll be glad, whenever the time comes, to be together and add the final capstone to all you built here.

Second, you’ll enjoy the identity that comes from being the class of 2020, the COVID Class and the last class to finish before our name change to Bushnell University. Never to minimize illness or loss of life, you’ve lived through something truly significant. This summer, social distancing requires our 40th reunion to be postponed until 2022. I guess we’ll celebrate our 60th birthdays together. But know this: we are, and have always been, the Volcano Class. We enjoy a special closeness that came under the fire of trial. You will experience this.

And finally, there’s a subtle work that happens in the heart of those who endure hardship. Jesus is realistic: in the world, you will have tribulation, and then speaks of his own victory through and beyond. Paul and James both take a cut at the way character and perseverance are the products of difficulty. Like broken bones that heal stronger than before, our souls can grow more robust through the testing of hardship. As you find ways to learn, experience community, and manage fears and uncertainties, God is doing a work in each of you.

On Sunday, May 18, 1980, while walking to church, I saw the mountain erupting miles into the sky. At the time, it was a novelty and a geologic phenomenon.

In coming days, the scope of the event began to emerge. Fifty-seven people died in the heat wave, ash clouds, and flooding debris. Rivers filled up beyond their banks and the threat of more devastation shut down schools. While the world paid real money for spoon-sized vials of ash, we cleaned it out of gutters, power-sprayed it from sidewalks, and hauled truckloads to the dump. We wore masks.

And in all of you. Among all the experiences that make your fellow Beacons fond of you, you are dear to us simply because you are the COVID Class.

We are sorry for what happened to your senior year.

And we never got to finish school.

And we have such high hopes for you.
