Why I Give Honoring Our Mother, Securing The Future

It was the easiest pitch that I have ever made. As a former public relations agency owner, I have made hundreds of them.

Attending the first Blessing of the Hands Ceremony for nurses graduating from NCU’s RN to BSN program, I walked back to my office on campus to call my brother and sister. It was time for us to honor our mother. She was a hard working, tough, no-nonsense registered nurse who worked in psychiatric and geriatric nursing until she was almost 80. I knew what I wanted. The three of us were going to make it happen.

Our mom loved being a nurse. By choice she continued working long after she could have hung up her uniform. Her friends were nurses. She trained nurses. She could talk about nursing for hours. Three days a week and every other weekend, she was proud to wear her white uniform, nursing cap, and nursing school pin. It was a reminder and source of professional pride of the sacrifice required for her and my grandparents to rise out of poverty and into lives of giving.

Our family lived the regiment that comes with our mom being a nurse from her era. Everything had a place, and everything was in its place. Our bedrooms were kept to hospital standards, including our beds made with hospital corners. Even if we weren’t, she was in bed early. We were all out of bed early. If I made a lot of noise after 9 pm on a work night, my mom was quick to remind me that people were depending on her to be at her best in the morning. She needed sleep – end of discussion. She believed nurses provide the consistent, compassionate care required for people to heal and to manage their physical and mental health. Nurses play a critical role in the healing continuum.

Meeting Dr. Linda Veltri, NCU’s director of nursing and an associate professor, talking with the graduating students and their families, and watching the Blessing of The Hands was the motivation for me to ask my brother and sister to fund the Helen Stafford Walsh, RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Through our individual contributions, monthly contributions through NCU’s Torchbearer’s Society, and a matching gift from my brother in-law’s employer, Johnson Controls, we funded our mom’s scholarship.

My mom never set foot on the NCU campus, but she would have been “all in” about supporting the RNs working to call this Christian university their alma mater. She would have been proud of her first scholarship recipient Leadi Aminou ’18, MSN ’19, a nurse with PeaceHealth who values faith, compassion, hard work and takes good care of his family—just like she and my dad did for us.

NCU provides many easy opportunities to make scholarships possible, like the one we did to honor our mom. Join me, and my siblings, in considering the ways you can support NCU students. Please contact Camille Ogden, NCU’s Director of Annual Giving, to learn more about how you can help NCU students put wisdom, faith and service into action to make the world a better place, whether it is across town or across the world, cogden@nwcu. edu or 541-694-7225.

Pat Walsh Editor, The Beacon Bulletin

NCU is all about relationships. First, we foster a crucial and lasting relationship with God. Second, we create lively campus relationships to educate, support and inspire our students. And third, we prepare our students to succeed in relationships that add up to health, impact and influence in the wider world. The work of our Advancement Office is also about relationships. We want to swap stories about what God is doing in your lives and here on campus so we can stoke the fire and burn brighter. And we want to create pathways that make generosity and partnership functional and rewarding. To intentionally grow relationship we’ve made significant efforts to update our data base to stay in touch with you. Please help us by notifying us of any changes or additions to your points of contact, and perhaps even letting us know of alumni or friends who feel lost or forgotten. We’re improving our communication efforts each day, using every kind of media to increase the number and quality of correspondences. And we’re on the road a lot, visiting friends, donors, churches, and organizations who have a heart for our mission. Your active relationship means so much. Your gifts to the Beacon Fund make the NCU experience affordable. Your gifts to endowed scholarships deepen and strengthen our base, while allowing us to award life-changing scholarships. Remembering NCU in your estate planning is one of the most significant ways to change lives.

Thank you for this privileged relationship.

Ways to Give

Cash gifts immediately benefit NCU. Checks, cash, credit card, or debit card are gratefully accepted.

Just like a cash contribution, a gift of securities provides the donor with an income tax deduction in the year it is given. The most convenient way to give a gift of securities is to arrange a transfer by a broker to NCU’s account. To make a gift of securities contact the University’s broker: Amanda Bailey, D.A. Davison at 541-608-7225 or abailey@dadco.com.

Many businesses have corporate matching gift programs that can double or even triple a gift to NCU. They are easy to coordinate and are of no cost to the donor. For more information, contact your employer’s human resources department for information about matching gifts.

Planned gifts are a creative opportunity to support NCU. They can offer a significant financial benefit during the donor’s lifetime.

Bequest donors can include NCU in their will by designating a specific dollar amount or percentage of their estate to the University.

Opportunities To Support NCU

Generations of donors contribute each year to keep Northwest Christian University strong. Their commitment allows NCU to continue to provide Christian higher education to students who seek an education grounded in Wisdom, Faith, and Service. Please carefully consider the many options available for you to financially support NCU.

A Beacon Fund gift is an opportunity to provide an unrestricted contribution to NCU. The Beacon Fund supports all NCU programs, including financial aid, faculty and staff development, buildings and grounds maintenance, student activities, and technology.

Capital Gifts are designated by the donor to fund construction, technology, and renovation projects.

Scholarships provide talented and deserving students the opportunity to make an NCU education more affordable. Gifts can be made to the general scholarship fund or an endowed scholarship can be established in the donor's name to support future students. For more information about giving to NCU, contact Keith Potter ’84, Hon. D.D. ’11, Vice President for Advancement at 541-349-7439 or kpotter@nwcu.edu. Remember:

• Any gift can be made in honor or in memory of someone special.

• To receive a 2019 charitable income tax deductions, gifts must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2019. All credit card gifts must be processed by Dec. 31, 2019.

• The IRA Charitable rollover allows taxpayers age 70 ½ or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, including universities. To make a gift using a IRA Charitable Rollover, contact your IRA plan administrator.

• Give online at www.nwcu.edu/give. For more information, call 541-684- 7318

Evening of Tribute NCU’s Evening of Tribute to Honor Ethical Business Leaders

Northwest Christian University’s Center for Leadership and Ethics (CLE) honored Eugene business leaders John Alvord, Forrest Technical Coatings, and One Hope as the 2019 recipients of the Exemplary Ethical Leader Awards. The CLE presented its highest community honor at its annual Evening of Tribute gala on Thurs., May 9, 2019, at the Hotel Eugene, formerly the Eugene Hilton. Evening of Tribute was presented by Moss Adams.

“We are pleased to honor these community members for their commitment to establish and promote a business culture where honorable and ethical practices are the foundation for personal, organization and community relevance,” said Susan Soonkeum Cox, Vice President for Policy and External Affairs at Holt International, a CLE Advisory Board member, and NCU Trustee. “They are prime examples of wisdom, faith, and service in action for NCU students and the entire community to model.”

Established in 2005, NCU’s Center for Leadership and Ethics equips and inspires ethical leaders by providing faith-integrated and values-based education and mentorship to NCU students, alumni, and the community. The Exemplary Ethical Leader Awards are chosen and awarded annually by the Center’s Advisory Board. Recent recipients include: Rexius, GloryBee, Joe and Cathleen Karcher (Carl’s Jr.), Market of Choice, Industrial Finishes, Phil Speers (Sheppard Motors), Eugene Mission, Holt International, Dr. Ada Lee, among others. NCU’s Center for Leadership and Ethics is supported by Moss Adams, Oakway Center, PeaceHealth, and Umpqua Bank.
