President’s Corner As I talk with longstanding NCU alumni and friends, there is always an underlying question: Is this the same NCU that I’ve known and loved?”

My answer is clear and confident. “Yes and no.”

Yes, NCU is the same. We are true to our time-honored values and our historic mission. Every student is encouraged to pursue an active, transformative relationship with Jesus and to find a sense for God’s call in their lives. The study of the Bible provides a lens and a compass for the study of every topic and preparation for every field of service. Our campus community is Christ-centered and chapel is the core gathering place. All faculty and staff pursue Christ and are committed to mentoring the whole student, as well as being involved in local churches. Most students express their faith in local and global ministry efforts, while others find support as they seek clarity in their understanding of God. We are a decidedly Christian university, evident in the depth of our community, the quality of our academics, and the strength of our co-curricular programs.

At the same time, NCU is not the same. We’re growing the number of degree programs each year, opening the door for Beacons to shine in a greater variety of professions. Our student population continues to rise. The reach of the university keeps stretching, as we welcome students from 13 countries and 17 states. The number of athletic teams, mission trips and music groups continue to increase, providing profound team-building contexts for more students each year. Even our campus is changing, as we extend out into surrounding parcels and make plans to expand as we head into our 125th year.

This magazine is a fitting emblem of that dynamic “yes and no”. You’ll read about alumni and faculty accomplishments, commencement ceremonies, the Bash-Whisler Bible Reading Competition, athletic success and other facets of NCU that feel familiar and time-honored. But you’ll also read about a new Pacific Islander Club, a new jazz band, new majors, new levels of accreditation, and new partnerships forged with other institutions.

I hope you read all of this—the old and the new—with a sense of curiosity about things to come. Through it all, know how much I appreciate your tangible partnership through praying, giving and shining bright as Beacons for life. We value your partnership and invite you to step with us into our next frontiers.

Commencement Ceremonies Hamilton and Brewster Address NCU Graduates spring commencement speaker. He was also chosen by the NCU Board of Trustees to receive an honorary Doctorate of Humanities for his work fighting human trafficking in southeast Asia.

Northwest Christian University’s Board of Trustees conferred undergraduate and graduate degrees for 247 students during the University’s Fall and Spring commencement ceremonies in December 2018 and May 2019.

Commencement ceremonies were held the Morse Event Center on campus.

“The graduates met the challenges posed by academic rigor while balancing family, work, and campus responsibilities to earn a Christ-centered education,” said NCU President Joseph D. Womack Ed.D. “We are proud of these graduates who have entered the workforce or continue in their professions as beacons of wisdom, faith, and service.”

Lane Community College President Margaret Hamilton, Ph.D., gave the fall commencement speech. Dr. Hamilton joined Lane Community College as its seventh president on July 1, 2017. She is a widely respected executive in community college education, strategic planning, accreditation, curriculum development, human relations, workforce and economic development, and in building partnerships with post-secondary education, higher education, business, and industry. Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Womack had recently signed the historic Titan to Beacon agreement creating pathways for Lane graduates to earn bachelor’s degrees at NCU. Prior to Lane, Dr. Hamilton served

as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Institutional Effectiveness and Planning at Camden County College, where she provided leadership for over 25,000 credit and non-credit students at three locations across southern New Jersey. Her 29-year career in higher education includes leadership positions in academic and student affairs, administrative services, and human resources and labor relations. Dr. Hamilton’s teaching experience in nursing education provided her an opportunity to share her clinical experiences working in urban centers such as Children’s Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Don Brewster, founder of Agape International Missions, was the

In 2005, Don, and his wife Bridget, sold their home in Roseville, California, to move to Cambodia to lead Agape International Missions (AIM), a non-profit organization working to stop the cycle of human exploitation in Cambodia through a holistic approach to effective, lifelong and community-wide transformation.

Based on their model, more than 12 programs have been established to support victims of sex trafficking, including a restoration home, a community center and church, the Lord’s Gym, transitional homes, employment centers, an accredited elementary and English language school, outreach programs, and a SWAT Team. Through these initiatives AIM offers children, families and survivors of sex trafficking freedom, spiritual and emotional restoration, and empowerment to pursue a safe, successful future.

Since its founding 14 years ago, AIM has impacted more than 7,500 children and adults at-risk or involved in human trafficking through prevention programs; rescued almost 1,200 children, women and men; restored 827 girls and women; and reintegrated 876 survivors back into the community. continued on page 7

Spring Commencement Student Award Winners Announced

SRADER & PRUITT RECEIVE FACULTY & STAFF AWARDS

Britnee Joaquin '19 and Tomás Carradero '19 received Northwest Christian University’s highest student honors for academic achievement and leadership during the University’s 120th Commencement.

The 2019 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership was awarded to Professor of Speech and Communication, Doyle Srader, Ph.D.

Britnee Joaquin '19

Joaquin is from Simi Valley, California. She received the President’s Scholastic Award for the highest cumulative grade point average with at least 61 credit hours earn at NCU. She graduated summa cum laude (3.90-4.0 GPA) with a Bachelor of Science in teacher education.

Tomás Carradero '19

The NCU student body and faculty voted Carradero to receive the Kendall E. Burke Award for high scholastic standing, an inspiration to students and faculty, high ideals of Christian character, and contribution of talents to the NCU community. He graduated magna cum laude (3.70-3.89 GPA) with a Bachelor of Science in business.

For its good work, AIM has received several accommodations, including the Cambodian government’s Royal Order of Sahametrei Award. Brewster has also been recognized by his alma mater, William Jessup University,

with the Faith and Service Award.

Additionally, Brewster work has been published in the Washington Post and has been featured on ABC’s Nightline, CNN, CNN International, Christianity Today, and other major media outlets.

Dr. Srader has been a member of the NCU faculty since 2007.

His primary teaching schedule includes public speaking, interpersonal communication, listening behavior, and other public address and interpersonal communication classes. He has authored numerous publications and writings including “Performative Listening,” which appeared in the International Journal of Listening, and “Before, After, During: Michael Chertoff’s Post-Katrina Arguments,” which appeared in Argumentation and Advocacy.

Dr. Srader earned a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Baylor University.

NCU Registrar Aaron Pruitt ‘98, M.B.A. ’04 received The President’s Award for Exemplary Staff Performance and Campus Leadership.

As registrar, Pruitt has been responsible for registration, course scheduling, and degree completion, as well as maintaining student records and veteran certifying official. Pruitt has worked at NCU for 20 years.

How Do You Use The Christian Liberal Arts In Your Daily Professional Life?

School graduate and spouse of Calvin Philpott '13. “I am proud of my NCU education.”

Danielle (Gehrke) Philpott ’14 graduated from NCU with a bachelor’s degree in business management. During her time on campus, Philpott played softball, was president of the Association of Northwest Christian University Students and participated in the Center for Leadership and Ethics’ mentorship program. Her mentor was Dari-Mart Executive Pat Straube.

“Questions requiring an ethical response and outcome come up multiple times a day in the real estate industry,” said Philpott, a broker for Keller Williams Realty, Inc. in Eugene, Oregon. “Every deal must be a win-win or no deal. I know if I keep my faith and trust in God, everything will go well.”

NCU’s small classes and intimate campus environment were keys to her success on campus and after graduation. “We had professors and community mentors who cared about our education and guided us to become leaders in the community,” said Philpott, a Marist Catholic High

World Track and Field Championships to be hosted at Hayward Field in Eugene.

“NCU was a terrific experience,” said Anderson, a Horizon Christian High School graduate from Portland whose bachelor’s degree is in pastoral ministry. “I learned so much about how to work with people from all backgrounds as well as how to think critically and present my ideas professionally. The most important thing I learned at NCU is how to keep Jesus at the center of all that I am as a friend, husband, and business person. By doing so, I can make a great impact in my community and help all benefit from doing business together.”

Calvin Anderson ’17 has gone from launching three-pointers on the Morse Event Center hardwood to opening doors to rest and relaxation for some of the nation’s best sports teams.

Anderson is the Sports Travel Manager for the Graduate Eugene, formerly the Hilton Eugene. With its university theme, the Graduate Eugene is a unique property for the local market. During his five years at the hotel, he has facilitated relationships and agreements with a growing number of PAC-12 athletic teams that come to the area to compete against teams at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. He is also involved in the hospitality planning for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field and for the 2021 IAAF

While on campus, an injury cut short his basketball career, but Anderson was involved in other campus activities. Most importantly, he met his wife at NCU, Annie (Tunstill) Anderson ’18.

Britni (Steiling) D’Eliso ’11, M.A. ’15 left a big impact on the NCU campus.

Originally from Albany, Oregon, as an undergraduate she immersed herself in many activities, but particularly those related to social justice. D’Eliso was the founder of the annual Embrace The Community Day when NCU students, faculty, and staff are divided into teams assigned to work at a local nonprofit agency for an afternoon. ETC Day, as it has become to be known, is a staple every fall to involve students in volunteer activities.

Feature News working with some of the area’s most vulnerable citizens. Working similarly to a hotel concierge, she assists mentally ill patients to navigate a complex system of services and then traverse the gaps in programs and funding so they receive the care they need and deserve.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communications (public speaking) and a minor in Christian ministry, she worked for the Lane County Health and Human Services Department for several years.

Recently, D’Eliso took her experience as a service provider to Trillium Behavioral Health in Eugene, where she is a mental health care manager,

“Having a foundation of Christian education bolsters compassion and helps to avoid professional burn out,” D’Eliso said. “It was the new ideas and thought provoking conversations on campus that guided my identity development and, today, help me manage ethical dilemmas that can sometimes come with working with people in a system that is underfunded and understaffed.”

D’Eliso, and husband Mike '10, a former NCU admissions representative, are active in ministry at CitySalt in Eugene. Mike is an assistant pastor and Britni is a member of the leadership team.

University News Pacific Islander Club Launched

Gerlach Wins Bash-Whisler

For the second consecutive year, Jesse Gerlach, a sophomore communications major from Eugene, Oregon, has won the Bash-Whisler Bible Reading Competition and Angela Cusano, a senior communications major from Simi Valley, California, was the runner-up. Katy Noel from Eugene, Oregon, also a senior communications major, placed third.

With a growing student population representing cultures of Hawai’i, Marshall Islands, American Samoa, Tonga, and other Pacific Islands, a Pacific Islander Club has been organized for students to share the region’s cultural richness with the campus and with each other.

“We want to help everyone learn more about the diversity that is found in the Pacific Islands. I didn’t know any of the other students from Hawaii before coming to NCU but this club is a great way for us to share the love that is rooted deeply in the Polynesian culture. We welcome all students to join us!” said Sera Tyrell, a sophomore, psychology major from Halawa Valley on Oahu, who is copresident of the organization.

The Pacific Islander Club meets every other week each semester.

The meetings consist of sharing food from the Islands, discussion of culture and everyday life as well as how to manage the opportunities and challenges with attending school many miles away from home.

“This club is more than just hanging out, because it has a purpose.

We are hoping to change the misconception about who is Hawaiian and who is from Hawaii. This club is an avenue to share the heritage represented in each student from Hawaii or the Pacific Islands,” said Dylan Silva, a sophomore majoring in interdisciplinary studies, from the east side of Oahu, who is the club’s other co-president. “Even though someone from Oregon is an Oregonian, it doesn’t work the same way in Hawaii. Not everyone from Hawaii is Hawaiian. I am a quarter Hawaiian, but there are so many other cultures expressed in the state of Hawaii, this is our opportunity to learn about them all.”

The competition was established 57 years ago, and continues with the Whisler family's generous ongoing support. Students from all majors are encouraged to select two 12-verse scripture passages, one from the Old Testament, to read aloud, and another from the New Testament, that is recited from memory. Doyle Srader, Ph.D., professor of Speech & Communications at NCU is the competition coordinator.

Semifinalists were Ariana Henton, a senior majoring in music/Christian worship, from Otis, Oregon; Brianna Reay, a junior teacher education, early childhood & elementary major from Sheridan, Oregon and Jessica Sacker, a junior teacher education major from San Diego, California.

Gerlach recited his Bash-Whisler passage at baccalaureate on May 10.

All competitors received a cash award for their work and participation in the contest.

Drumming To His Own Beat “Music can express emotions and ideas when words fail,” said Matt Geronimo, a junior from Hayward, California, majoring in music/Christian worship. “Music touches you regardless of who you are and where you come from.”

Geronimo comes from a family of musicians. His dad plays the piano. A brother plays the alto-saxophone. His sister is a classically trained pianist. He began playing the drums at 3Crosses church in Castro Valley, California, at age eight.

“I believe music is a gift from God,” Geronimo said. “Music is one way we reflect on God’s word.”

In addition to the drums, he has honed his skills on the electric and bass guitars during his time at NCU. He adds that the faculty help all students to hear their calling by identifying their strengths and guiding them to shape their spiritual and academic interests.

“I love NCU’s music/Christian worship program because I am not pigeon-holed as only a drummer or only a guitar player,” he said. “I have had the opportunity to learn from faculty who are masters of their craft and then pick up additional skills by learning audio mixing and song writing that help me to share God’s word in different ways.”

Geronimo says playing jazz music is “fun” and that the concert brought musicians and singers together to perform in new and different ways.

“I like jazz,” Geronimo said. “But I believe that as Christian musicians we must develop our skills to be as good or better than the best musicians in the secular world.”

On the Fast Track To Score Ruth Meeker is fast. She is a former Oregon State Champion in the 200 meters. After graduating from St. Stephen’s Academy in Beaverton, Oregon, she came to NCU to major in exercise science as well as to sprint for the Beacon track and field team.

Once on campus, Meeker caught her stride. She traded her starting blocks and relay baton to focus her talents on music notes, the 88 keys on a piano, and violin strings in the NCU music department.

“I like being part of a group that makes music together,” said Meeker, now a junior music composition major from Portland. “Music touches people and speaks to them in ways that words alone simply cannot.”

Meeker is a vocalist, but also plays the violin and piano in several NCU music ensembles and chorale groups, including in the Music Department’s recent Night of Jazz performance.

“Jazz is a challenge,” she said. “Learning to play a variety of music helps us to become well-rounded musicians.”

In high school, Meeker combined her love for track and field with music, but at NCU she found her calling.

“When I graduate, I want to write the musical scores for movies,” Meeker said. “Music is another way to show people God’s love.”

Night of Jazz All That Jazz The Ross Evans Chapel in the Price Music Building was the jazziest place in Lane County on March 16. Night of Jazz, a concert to celebrate styles of contemporary jazz, fusion, funk and swing featured NCU’s Jazz Ensemble, Ladies Contemporary A Cappella Group, and soloists chosen from among the most talented students.

Patrons heard students perform the music of Snarky Puppy and Gordon Goodwin, as well as original compositions and arrangements by NCU students and music faculty.

“The generous grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust is a gamechanger for Northwest Christian University,” said Joseph D. Murdock Charitable Trust to upgrade the University’s technology platform to meet the needs of a growing and diverse student population enrolled in our curriculum based in wisdom, faith and service.”

In the last eight years, NCU’s student population has grown 60%. Because the current technology platforms are stretched

to the limits of their capabilities, a crossdepartmental team, led by Information Technology Director Christopher (Stead) Halstead M.B.A '13, has engaged in a robust process refinement and software search and selection effort to support student recruitment and retention initiatives.

“The team identified Jenzabar and its ‘One’ platform as our partner and solution moving forward,” said Halstead, who spent two years ministering to college students after completing his undergraduate education with generous grant support from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. “The successful migration to this platform will resource our staff and students with the necessary tools to ‘train

purposeful graduates,’ a core tenant of our mission.

“No service interruptions are expected for students and faculty during the platform migration slated to be completed in June 2020.

Halstead led the campuswide grant development team, including with support from the NCU Office of Advancement, to submit the application to the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.

This event is the first of a women’s leadership series which will meet quarterly to spotlight professional women and esteemed alumnae in the community to discuss topics of leadership, mentorship, career development, and personal growth. Each event will be capped at 50 participants to ensure lively discussion and easy networking. The pilot program was a huge success and led by a panel of thoughtful, funny, and exemplary women: Kristina Payne '99, Executive Director, Lane Workforce Partnership; Jenny Ulum, Public Affairs Counsel, Obie Companies, Senior Director, Communications King Estate Winery, and First Citizen 2019; and Samantha Matta, CBT Nuggets, Learner Experience Team. The panel was moderated by two outstanding NCU alumnae, Jen McFadden ’18 and Caitlin Vargas M.B.A. ’15.

While the topic focused on “Speaking Your Truth” and the art of assertive communication, each panelist brought a unique perspective and the program offered an opportunity for the rest of the impressive women in the room to workshop, share, and mentor one another. Doty Earns Prestigious Career Counselor Certification Angela Doty ’00, M.A.’05, GDCF, has earned the prestigious Certified Career Counselor credential from the National Career Development Association (NCDA).

“Angela is recognized by her career development peers as a leader in guiding students to find their professional calling,” said Dennis Lindsay, Dr. Theol., Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. “Earning the Certified Career Counselor credential is further evidence of her unwavering commitment to the profession, her staff, as well as the students and alumni to whom she offers career counseling services.”

The Certified Career Counselor credential is intended for career counselors with an advanced degree (master’s or higher) in counselor education, counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling or closely related counseling degree, engaged primarily in a career counseling practice or other career counseling-related services. The Certified Career Counselor credential is a recognition of two important factors in training and experience, including both counseling and a specialization in career development, theory and practice.

To earn the certification, applicants must have already earned a master’s degree, completed 600 hours of clinical career development experience, and successfully passed a battery of competency assessments.

“It is an honor and privilege to live out my calling by providing quality career counseling to NCU students and alumni,” Doty said. “We have developed a comprehensive career development program, with an intentional focus on vocation and calling. This credential elevates the good work that we are already doing. We continue to seek new opportunities to serve those who trust

Melton Receives SIPS Certification From Yale was identified by researchers at Yale University’s PRIME Research Clinic as an expert in schizophrenia and then completed 100 SIPS assessments, passed five written clinical examinations based on patient presentations, passed an examination about the SIPS tool, submitted three videos conducting SIPS that were rated

by SIPS’ authors to ensure he met the programs “gold standard” and completed SIPS training under the supervision of the SIPS authors.

NCU’s Ryan Melton, Ph.D., LPC, ACS, director and assistant dean of clinical mental health counseling, is one of five mental health professionals in the world certified by Yale University’s PRIME Research Clinic to use and teach Structure Interview of Psychosis-risk Syndrome (SIPS) to diagnose a patient’s clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis and cases of first-episode psychosis.

“Dr. Melton is a national expert on schizophrenia psychosis and was chosen by Yale from among the leading academics and clinicians in the world for certification in this breakthrough diagnostic protocol,” said Dennis Lindsay, D.Theol., NCU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty.

“We are pleased that he will train clinicians, mental health professionals and NCU Clinical Mental Health students to use SIPS to help people live their best lives.”

By diagnosing one or more of the three CHR syndromes (Attenuated Psychotic Syndrome, Brief Intermittent Syndrome, and Genetic Risk and Deterioration), SIPS is designed to predict the onset of psychosis even when it has never been present and if a patient has a current psychosis.

SIPS is used with adults 18 to 45 years of age and adolescents 12 to 17 years old.

“What makes SIPS unique is that it provides clinicians and patients the information needed to make an accurate diagnosis today and provides a better understanding about psychosis as a possible condition, with the goal being to prevent the onset of psychosis all together,” Melton said. “I am looking forward to offering the SIPS training to clinicians throughout the western United States and beyond.”

Jill Workman Anderson, ‘84 When listening to Jill Workman Anderson ’84 talk about her time as a student at Northwest Christian and about her career as a bank executive, there is this feeling of deep faith and caring that wraps you like a warm blanket on a cool fall day.

Workman Anderson graduated from NCU with a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies. She also took classes in geography at Portland State University.

Growing up she attended camp and events at the WiNe-Ma Christian Camp, a place she and her husband, Don, continue to volunteer.

“I learned so much at NCU that transfers to my professional and volunteer careers,” Workman Anderson said. “Mostly, I learned about other people and how to work with people in different environments.”

She credits Dr. Song Nai Rhee and Dr. William Moore as professors who impacted her experience on campus.

“Dr. Rhee taught me to think and to extend my knowledge,” she said. “Dr. Moore was sharp as a tack.

He taught us about different religions that helped cement our Christian faith.”

For nearly 30 years, Workman Anderson has been with Wells Fargo Bank in Portland. Over the decades, she has experienced many changes in the financial services industry. As a vice president in her division, she helps people with retirement plans to make sure they are in compliance and administered properly within the law.

“I want people to have the retirement they are expecting, so it is important that I work with companies on the front end of their planning to get their accounts set up properly,” Workman Anderson said. “I like to help people and to solve problems.”

She helps organize meals for attendees of the church’s Celebrate Recovery program on Monday nights. Brian Terrett M.B.A. ’06

Brian Terrett M.B.A. ‘06 is the director of public relations, marketing and communications for Legacy Health in Portland. He leads a team charged to tell the Legacy Health story. Using video, articles, social media, news media, and other communications strategies, the team shares stories about how Legacy Health’s people serve patients throughout the community, and the world, from its six hospitals, 18 urgent care locations, 27 primary care clinics, and 35 specialty clinics located from Silverton, Oregon to the Portland Metropolitan Area to Southwest Washington.

“I love that I work with people to help them succeed,” Terrett said. “I am fortunate in so many ways, but I like that no two days are ever alike for me.”

After talking with friends who were not having the M.B.A. experience that they had expected, Terrett enrolled in NCU’s program.

“The program was exactly what I wanted,” he said. “I spent two years learning and studying with smart, motivated people.”

“I received a great education that included writing and defending a thesis,” Terrett said. “Without an NCU M.B.A., I probably would not be in the professional position that I am today.”

After graduation, Terrett followed in the footsteps of one of his favorite NCU professors, Annie Maggs, to the front of the classroom.

As an adjunct faculty member, he taught classes in healthcare marketing and healthcare strategic planning.

“Without an NCU M.B.A., I probably would not be in the professional position that I am today.”

A graduate of Metropolitan State University in Denver, Terrett, and his wife Diane, moved with their two boys to Eugene in 1996. He served as the public information officer with Eugene Police Department and then for the city of Eugene. He left government to lead local communications and community relations for U.S. West, eventually making a career shift to healthcare communications and marketing at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center, located across Alder Street from NCU. It was at Sacred Heart when he began his involvement with the University.

“In healthcare, education and credentials are important,” he said. “I wanted to earn an M.B.A., but the program had to be challenging, designed for professionals, and flexible.”

“I enjoyed teaching at NCU and I expect to teach again after I retire in several years,” he said.

Terrett has been with Legacy Health in Portland for 10 years. At about the time he and Diane made the move north on I-5, he began researching the Camino de Santiago after watching a Rick Steves travel program about pilgrimages on Oregon Public Broadcasting.

“I read every thing that I could find about the Camino,” Terrett said. “I talked with people on message boards and met with people in Portland who had made the journey. I knew it was something that we had to do.”

of Saint James, is a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain. It is believed that is where the remains of the saint are buried. Many people from around the globe and many faith traditions walk its routes as a form of retreat for their spiritual growth.

To prepare for their 500-mile, sixweek walk, the Terretts trained.

They went on daily walks, walking long distances on the weekends.

They would even walk to the grocery store and carry their groceries home.

“We built up endurance and strength so we could walk every day of our pilgrimage,” Terrett said.

After a decade of planning, the Terretts headed to Barcelona, Spain to begin their walk up

They enjoyed the local food and the various people they met along the way.

“I come back more present and conscious about the things and people around me,” Terrett said. “I am less vulnerable to stress and feel a peace and contentment that I had not had before due to a much deeper sense of Christ in my life.”

“We are all just working to help others,” Workman Anderson said.

Her commitment to faith extends beyond her immediate community to Wi-Ne-Ma, where she serves as an associated member of the board of directors. She, with other supporters, is raising money to celebrate Wi-Ne-Ma’s 75th anniversary, so its property and activities can continue to be part of people’s faith journey for another 75 years, including for many NCU faculty, staff and students.

“I have been attending Wi-Ne-Ma for my entire life,” Workman Anderson said. “It is important for it to continue.”

passion since 1989. Her volunteer experience has taken her from working on projects in Central Oregon’s desert wildlands to the halls of the U.S. Capitol and Congressional Office Buildings to lobby for Steens Mountain, legislation that was signed into law in 2000 to protect these lands from development and to preserve an environment created by God. “God created the desert and Jesus spent time there,” she said. “We must use this gift, not abuse it, and protect it for future generations.”

Whether you meet Workman Anderson at the bank, Wi-Ne-Ma, at her church’s Celebrate Recovery meetings or in the desert, it is wisdom, faith, and service that stoke the fires to her warm commitment to people and the environment.

2019 PERSEVERANCE AWARD WINNER KAYLYNN BUSH REFLECTS ON A DIFFICULT JOURNEY WITH A REWARDING END. Women's Basketball student-athlete Kaylynn Bush '19 developed a strong reputation in just two years at Northwest Christian University as a great student, a great friend, and a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Head Coach Chad Meadors said the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks of Kaylynn is her grit and her toughness. "She really enjoys doing the difficult things on the court, taking charges and playing lights-out defense," he said.

adversity to play all 30 games as a freshman, but it took its toll. A new coach came in for her sophomore season and she convinced herself to give it another shot. Kaylynn continued to battle through sickness, and struggled to keep her head in the game.

She said, "The new coach didn't know me and my history and she told me she didn't trust me or believe in me. I began to question why I would play for a school that didn't believe in me and support me."

There was a time when that tough exterior did not match how Kaylynn was feeling on the inside.

Kaylynn was now playing off the bench, feeling defeated and her mental health went from bad to worse. She said, "I was constantly sick, I was losing weight and being away from family was so hard. I felt like my mind was going to explode and I was trapped. I would cry, pull out my hair and make myself throw up. It wasn't going to get better and there was nobody who was going to help me make it better. I questioned whether my existence on the planet was worth it. Clearly there was no meaning and my life wasn't going to get better."

Coming out of high school at Valley Christian High School in Portland, Kaylynn was a highly touted basketball player. Recruited by multiple schools, including NCU and former coach Heath Alexander, she landed at an NCAA Division II school in Colorado with a plan to play basketball and get a degree in environmental business.

She said, "I went there planning to make an impact in the classroom and on the court. I thought this was a school that would give me the opportunity to succeed. I didn't know what to expect, but I had always been taught to avoid distractions and work hard to make friends and have the time of your life, but first and foremost to get your degree. Never once did I learn that things would be so hard."

Things quickly took a turn when she stepped on campus. Adjusting to the life of a driven student-athlete began to feel overwhelming and she was stretching herself too thin. "Finding the balance between getting it done in the classroom and then being in the gym all day every day was very hard," she said. "I was over doing it and I ended up

in the hospital with an abscess in the back of my throat. I was in the hospital for five days and not once did my coach come to see me."

Upon her return, her coach told her to get back on the court as quickly as possible and to get ready for the upcoming season. She said, "He basically told me he didn't care that I was practically on my death bed, he just needed me to be in practice so our team could be successful."

At 17, Kaylynn struggled to know what to do. She was supposed to be on bed rest for a month, but was instructed to be at practice, running or riding a bike when should couldn't get on the court.

The side effects of her medications made these tasks difficult and she was feeling singled out. "Of course, I don't have mom and dad there to fight my battles for me so I had to do it on my own," she said.

Miraculously, Kaylynn fought through

Finally making her way to a counselor at the encouragement of her teammates, Kaylynn was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and put on medication. She made the decision to transfer and knew she wanted to come home. "I needed to be closer to my family," she said, "and even though Eugene was two hours away, it still felt like home."

Kaylynn called up Coach Alexander to see if he might still have a spot for her on the team and he enthusiastically said yes. "Coming to NCU was a great opportunity for me and I am forever grateful that Coach Alexander still believed in me and in my talents," she said. "It was such a blessing because I thought my dream might have been over."

Beacon News That dream became a reality as she stepped foot on the corner of Alder and 11th Avenue. "Right when I got on campus I knew I made the right choice," said Kaylynn. "Everyone was friendly and encouraging. Not knowing me or my story, people would still pray for me and care for me. NCU put a smile on my face and gave me hope that all was not lost."

Her first season with the Beacons proved to be a memorable one as the team reached new heights, earning their first trip to the NAIA National Championship tournament. Kaylynn said, "Coming from a program where we won eight games over my freshman and sophomore years combined, it felt amazing to accomplish things I never thought I would be a part of."

Success, however, came at a cost as Alexander left to take an NCAA Division I Assistant Coach position at the University of Cincinnati. Heading into her senior season, Kaylynn was facing her fourth coach in four years at two different schools. Old wounds began to resurface. "I definitely had my guard up after everything I had gone through," she said. "I wasn't sure what to expect or if basketball would still be an option for me.

She met with Coach Meadors early on

and had a good conversation about her past. "I told him everything that had happened to me and he told me he just wanted me to have fun," she said.

Starting nearly every game, Bush had what she called the best year of her basketball career despite the team having a losing season. She said, "Coach told me I deserved to have fun and to love the game again and this year I have done that. The culture that Chad established was different and I enjoyed being in a culture that emphasizes team dynamics. We were a team of fighters and being a part of this was nothing short of amazing."

Coach Meadors said, "I think teammates are everything. They become sad when a teammate is down and then they all rally around her. Those pick-me-ups can mean everything to an athlete and Kaylynn really thrived with that additional support system in place."

Although it had started as a source of anxiety for Kaylynn, basketball proved to be her source of strength. On the court and beyond, she continues to work on herself. "It is really about mental toughness," she said, "and I'm still learning that. It is part of my growth."

As Coach Meadors put it, basketball provides a beautiful canvas for

personal growth. He said, "There is just no way you are going to go through even three minutes on the floor without making mistakes. It is in those mistakes that we get to develop our skills.

Strength and growth are felt in the coping and getting back up again. In a way, you are working on this game but the whole time you are really working on yourself."

Kaylynn graduated in May with her degree in business administration, earning conference and national scholar-athlete honors in the process.

Moving forward, she plans to find ways to advocate for others that may be in similar situations to what she experienced. "Being able to tell my story about mental health and battling through adversity is pretty cool," she said. "Every college athlete should get to enjoy the college experience, but it isn't always easy. I learned the hard way and I don't want others to go through the same things."

Her first opportunity to put her advocacy into action will come this fall when she begins her role as a graduate assistant for Coach Meadors and the women's basketball team. "I am excited to be on the coaching side of the ball," she said. "I definitely have seen a lot of different things having had four coaches in college. I will be able to take little bits and pieces, the best and the worst of all of them, and identify who I want to be as a coach."

"Having the support system and community that I have at NCU has been incredible. Having a family and people that I can go to for guidance is something everyone should have. I want athletes in similar situations to know that they are not alone. There are other people fighting the same battles they are."

In April, Kaylynn was named an "Athletic Training Perseverance Award" winner at the Beacons' end-of-year award ceremony. She said, "If I didn't come to NCU I would probably still be in the dark, and confused, and scared, and dealing with my everyday stressors.

Coming here showed me that there was hope and allowed me to persevere."

TWO ATHLETES AND TWO TEAMS JOIN HALL OF FAME

Hall of Fame Inductees Jim Newport '87 and Jeanette (Scofield) McHarness '75 The 2019 NCU Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place on Sunday as the school welcomed in two national championship teams, and two individuals.

Joining the Hall of Fame are the 1986 and 1987 men’s basketball teams, men’s basketball player Jim Newport ’87 and women’s volleyball player Jeanette Scofield-McHarness '75.

1986 Men’s Basketball Team The 1980’s were a remarkable time in the legacy of NCU basketball. The 1983, 1984 and 1985 NBCAA National Championship came home to Eugene and all three of those teams have already been enshrined in the NCU Athletic Hall of Fame.

A new coach continued a long tradition in 1986 as the Crusaders won their fourth consecutive NBCAA title. Hallof-Fame coach Dave Lipp '71 left the school after the 1985 season to join the women’s basketball staff at the University of Oregon and former team chaplain Don Kennedy '69 took over the reins for one season.

The 1986 team started the season 14-1 and went on to finish 24-7. The regular season included a 68-59 December victory on the road at Oregon Institute of Technology that would be the only NCC victory in Klamath Falls until 30 years later.

In the national tournament quarterfinals they dominated Southwestern College (Texas) 116-68, a post-season scoring record that still stands. Hall-of-Famer Jon Willis led the way

Beacon News with 21 points and six rebounds and 11 players found their way into the book.

An 83-70 victory over Pillsbury College (Minnesota) came after leading by just three-points at half-time. Willis scored 27 points despite sitting out much of the second half with four fouls, and Jim Newport added 24 points as the Crusaders shot 61% from the field.

One night later, NCC rolled to an 8067 championship victory over North Central Bible College (Minnesota). Willis ended his collegiate career in that game by scoring 30 points and fittingly hitting the first and last buckets of the game, scoring on a slam dunk as the final buzzer sounded. He was named tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Jim Newport.

Along with Willis and Newport, members of the 1985-1986 team including Hollie Darden, Mike Delaplain, John Gilles, Greg Gittins, Jeff Knox, John Leach, John O’Haver, Mickey McGraw, Greg Olson, Mike Parham, and Carl Swan. Coach Kennedy was assisted by Tony Carvey and Dan Oleson.

With his inclusion in this class, Jon Willis joins Jim Newport this year as the first two five-time inductees into the NCU Athletic Hall of Fame.

1987 Men’s Basketball Team The 1987 men’s basketball team continued the mid-80’s small-college dynasty, recording their fifth straight NBCAA National Championship. Led by first-year head coach Paul Halupa, the Crusaders had their share of adversity during a 13-16 regular season, but emerged when it counted at the national tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

NCC opened the season 8-5 before Christmas, but an injury to leading scorer and University of Oregon transfer Brian Trendell sent the team on a sevengame losing streak and nine losses in a ten-game stretch. Trendell returned and the Crusaders went 4-2 over the final six games of the regular season to head to the national tournament with some momentum.

The tournament started on an ominous note with not one but three key players hampered with injuries leading up to the

trip. Senior Jim Newport and junior Jeff Knox sustained sprained ankles while junior John Gilles was diagnosed with a stress fracture. All three players were questionable to play and both Knox and Gilles would end up remaining on the bench for the entire tournament.

After a quarterfinal win over Nebraska Christian, the Crusaders once again defeated Pillsbury College in the semifinals, 89-79 behind 28 from Trendell to advance to the championship game.

They then won the title, 66-59 over Simpson College (California). Trendell again led the way, scoring 20 points including a clutch three-point shot at the 3 ½ minute mark of the second half after Simpson had pulled within two points. Jim Newport was able to get back onto the court and provided 11 crucial points in just 15 minutes in his final collegiate game, securing his fourth national championship.

Newport, Knox, Gilles, and Trendell were joined on the 1986-1987 team

by Darden, Gittins, Leach, McGraw, Olson and Swan as well as newcomers Ken Farmer, Marty Lanz, and Bruce Thompson. Coach Halupa was assisted that season by Kent Landerholm.

Jeanette (Scofield) McHarness ’75 For the first time, the Northwest Christian University Athletic Hall of Fame honors pre-NAIA women’s athletics with the selection of a true pioneer in Jeanette McHarness '75.

A member of the 1974 and 1975 volleyball teams, McHarness went on to coach the Crusaders for the next seven years and was a strong voice for women’s collegiate athletics in the early Title IX era.

In 1975, McHarness was named the Most Valuable Player for the only team in NCU history across any sport to go undefeated. The Crusaders went 12-0 on the season including an 8-0 championship run through the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Conference.

After her two seasons in uniform, McHarness took over the reins of the program for the 1976 season and led the team to a third-place finish in the

PNCC and 21 wins, a program record which stands to this day.

The following season she led the Crusaders back to the top as they won the PNCC Championship for the second time in three years behind a 13-1 record. McHarness went on to coach the team for five more years.

Jim Newport ’87 Jim Newport was one of a rare handful of players who could claim membership on four NBCAA National Championship teams. Already a member of two Hall of Fame teams, Newport is now being recognized as part of two more teams and for his individual athletic accomplishments, making him just the second five-time inductee along with Jon Willis.

Newport was a key contributor on all four of his teams and his role steadily grew throughout his career. By his senior year he was named the team MVP and was also named an NBCAA AllAmerican.

A role player during his first two seasons, Newport averaged 6.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. As a junior, Newport started coming into his own and was an integral piece of the NBCAA Championship run. In the quarterfinal round he scored 13 points, scored 24 in the semifinal and was named to the AllTournament team.

As a senior, Newport averaged 17.1 points per game and led the team with 538 points, 192 rebounds and 17 blocks.

He also was the teams’ best shooter, hitting 55% of his shots from the field and 80% of his free-throw attempts.

Newport still ranks in the top-15 alltime for scoring and he is seventh alltime in rebounding.

Newport’s best game was his 38-point performance against Northwest University on February 20, 1987 which at the time set a new NCC single-game scoring record. It still ranks as the seventh-highest scoring effort in school history. Newport also played a key role in the 1987 NBCAA championship game as he came off the bench to score 11 points in just 15 minutes of action as he was hobbled with an ankle injury.

Junior Anika Rasubala ran away from her competition over the final 800 meters, claiming an NAIA National Championship victory in the 3000m Steeplechase on Saturday at the NAIA National Championships at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.

Rasubala said, "It feels incredible. I still pinch myself because I can't really believe it happened. It is surreal to me when I look back on the race and the entire season leading up to that point.

It was a lot of hard work and for it to come together was such a blessing.

"First and foremost I thank Jesus for giving me the ability to run and the love for running. My family is amazing and coming out here to be with me was incredible. My teammates were so supportive, sweating and doing the workouts right alongside me and I love them so much."

Rasubala finished the race in 10 minutes, 44.89 seconds, breaking the NCU record despite running in 90 degree heat and heavy humidity. The previous record was held by current

assistant coach and former AllAmerican Michelle Tyler '17 for the past three years.

This is the second individual national championship for the Beacons and it comes just one year after the first NAIA crown was won by Bailey Dell '18 in the Javelin.

"I truly felt that God was running right beside me throughout the race," she said. "He gave me a lot of peace this morning and I had some confidence going in, but as a competitor you always question things and I just felt his presence on every lap. I just knew to be patient and wait for the right moment to make my move and it worked out."

Beginning the race boxed in by three other runners, Rasubala was able to bide her time, sticking in the lead pack of four over the first 1800 meters before moving in front and leading the race for the final five laps. With the last two laps remaining, Rasubala gave herself some separation from UBC's Madeleine Brunt, the Cascade Conference Runner-Up, and she never looked back.

This is her second straight All-American finish in the event after finishing eighth in 2018. She said, "It was so exciting that my parents and my teammates

got to be there with me. It was a completely different experience than last year, getting to celebrate afterward with more of my teammates and with my parents there."

With the ten points scored with Rasubala's victory, NCU finished the championships in 29th place, fourth among schools from the CCC. UBC won the national championship, Oregon Tech finished tenth and the College of Idaho was 28th, scoring one more point than the Beacons.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, senior Dan Carrier closed out his NCU career on a high note Saturday, taking tenth place in the NAIA 3000m Steeplechase championship. The Cascade Collegiate Conference runner-up was languishing in the back of the pack in humid gulf temperatures reaching the low 90's at race time, but passed six runners over the final five laps to come in tenth.

Carrier ran a 9:43.58 and missed out on All-American honors by just six seconds.

Also running the event was senior Conner Covey who pushed through to finish the race in 15th. NCU's other scheduled competitor on Saturday was senior Michael Andrews in the Pole Vault. Unfortunately, a knee injury suffered during mid-week training made him unable to compete.

This year the Northwest Christian University athletic department was honored with four of the six major individual awards given out by the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Seniors Britnee Joaquin and Conner Covey were named the U.S. Bank Scholar Athletes of the Year while Joaquin and junior Kaleb Miles were the winners of the Les Schwab Champion of Character honors. The annual awards are voted on by the conference athletic directors.

became only the fourth student-athlete to earn the prestigious honor in the 47-year history of the award.

Covey, from Medford, Oregon, graduated with a 4.0 GPA in exercise science program and became the first Beacon male studentathlete to complete a career with a perfect grade point average. He earned U.S. Bank Academic All-Conference honors six times, NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete recognition four times and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.

Covey was also inducted into the NCU chapter of the National Scholar-Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma this past year. A four-year member of the men's cross-country and track/field teams, Covey was the 2019 CCC Steeplechase Champion.

Joaquin, a senior soccer player from Simi Valley, California, completed her undergraduate degree this year in Education finishing her career with a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA).

She was named the NCU Student Teacher of the Year and was the recipient of the Presidential Scholar Award. Joaquin

Joaquin was twice named NCU's ScholarAthlete of the Year, was a three-time U.S. Bank Academic All-Conference selection and a two-time NAIA-Daktronics ScholarAthlete. On two occasions she also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. The four-year soccer player for the Beacon’s was also inducted into the NCU chapter of the National Scholar-Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma.

Joaquin has been an active participant in mission trips throughout her four years as a Beacon, as well as service in Eugene, Oregon. This past year Joaquin traveled to Kenya as part of the NCU mission team. Along with teaching the gospel to villagers in door-to-door ministry, Joaquin helped to organize a track meet that attracted over one-hundred men, women and children throughout the villages that participated. Other mission trips during her time at NCU include disaster relief work in Puerto Rico and fighting human trafficking in Nicaragua.

Locally, Joaquin played an instrumental role in the organization of service projects for the women’s soccer program. Last fall, along with her teammates, a forgotten walking path in Hendricks Park was revitalized by clearing overgrown brush and removal of debris in order to make

Kaleb Miles '20 the path usable by the public. This spring Joaquin helped to lead multiple “Little Tykes” soccer clinics for area preschoolers to participate in which the women’s and men’s soccer players served as the instructors.

Miles, a junior from Puyallup, Washington plays soccer for the Beacons and returns for his senior season this fall while working towards his degree in Biology.

Like Joaquin, Miles took part in the NCU mission trip to Kenya. While serving in remote churches, Miles was, without notice, asked to present a session to young children. With little preparation time he created a fifteen-minute message about David and Goliath in which he acted out the various parts in order to keep the children engaged. Miles also assisted in organization of the track meet that attracted over one-hundred men, women and children throughout the villages that participated.

On campus Miles spearheaded the launch of NCU’s chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and served as the men’s soccer Chaplain Captain. He was the men’s soccer representative on the athletic department’s Student- Athlete Advisory Committee and was NCU's Champion of Character Award winner for 2018-2019.

Miles also participated in the Hendricks Park walking path cleanup efforts and the “Little Tykes” soccer clinics.

Fantasy Baseball, Real Bonds It’s the Downtown Athletic Club. Not in New York, but in Eugene. Not for the Heisman Trophy presentation, but for an annual baseball draft. These are not uber-wealthy franchise owners, but pastors, a publisher, a regional sales manager, a store manager, an air traffic controller and other Beacons shining in a variety of fields. These are not the Yankees and Dodgers, or the Mariners and the Giants. These “owners” represent the McKenzie Wisox, the Boomtown Rats and the Westwood Wizards—and other names that make sense only to the participants. This is a fantasy baseball league.

Established in 1981, the fantasy league began in a campus apartment with students who attended or graduated from NCU in the early to mid-1980s. With some research, this league believes that they are the longest standing fantasy league in the western United States. Through the years, eight participants have remained constant. A few others have fallen away (including the author of this article) and others have joined. The league itself involves researching, drafting and following professional baseball players, with their statistics amounting to success or failure in the standings. Trades and injuries, slumps and career performances mark the ups and downs of ownership.

Mark Elmblade, “The Commissioner”, wrangles the group with a mix of humor and gravity. Tom Ferrari has donned an actual green jacket a record eight times, with his name affixed to a traveling trophy for each victorious year. Barry Lind ‘84 is four decades deep in the mire of defeat. Other participants (Neil DeBerry, Kevin Hastings, Dave Keeling ‘83, Dave Kleinfeldt ‘83, Jon Stock ’86, M.A. ‘88, Mark Wiley and some relative newcomers) see their names affixed to the trophy here and there. Along with trophy and jacket, the champion receives a modest financial prize in a brief ceremony. Other rituals include the singing of the Canadian national anthem—badly.

The heart of this league is not, however, about winning or even baseball. “We’re here for camaraderie. This league keeps friendships going that have lasted for thirty-nine years,” said Dave Keeling, following up his meaningful

moment with requisite smack-talk. “We would have kicked Kevin [Hastings] out of our friendship ring years ago if it weren’t for this draft. And Barry [Lind] is just here to try to learn about baseball.”

Is this league important to these players? Mark Elmblade admits, “I quit my job to do this one year.”

The teasing continues, intermingled with genuine gratitude.

“I don’t like baseball. I don’t like fantasy. I don’t even like the people I’m doing this with,” insinuating quite the opposite.

Hastings says, “This is how I maintain relationship with my college friends.”

Jon Stock adds, “We love baseball, but sometimes it’s the only time we see each other.”

Hastings throws in, “Once a year is all we can take.”

The day starts with breakfast at a local restaurant, and then a caravan to the club. As the work of drafting teams begins to take form, so does an ever-flowing stream of false and misleading rumors about the pro players (“Did everyone hear that Mike Trout broke his leg?”), along with decades of lore—the famous draft selections, the infamous choices. The group remembers how the author (in 1983) drafted Matt Keough, a journeyman pitcher coming off an 11-18 season, proving naiveté and guaranteeing punchline status thirtysix years later. Some decisions echo with laughter through the halls of tradition.

Punchline or not, this reunion feels good. Whatever the enduring tie that binds, these fantasy team owners prove each year the value of life together during formative college times, as well as the ongoing value of staying connected.

Richard Osburn '53 is a retired senior pastor from the Forest Grove United Church of Christ where he served for 29 years. Richard and his wife Danna have been married for 62 years they live in Gaston, Oregon Richard still leads worship and preaches every Sunday at Jennings McCall Retirement Residence in Forest Grove.

1960s

Dennis Bokovoy '61 is a retired adjunct professor at Columbia Gorge Community College and Co-author of three books including: Your Guide to the Grand Canyon .

Dr. Tom Newton '67 most recently served as the Northwest Director of A Touch of Hope Ministries out of Vancouver, Washington, an organization that cares for the critically ill and their caregivers.

After NCU, Tom completed a M.Div. from Lexington Theological Seminary (1970). He returned to school in 2000 for a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy at George Fox University (Portand, Oregon) followed by a D.Min also from George Fox. He and his wife Diane live in Vancouver, Wash.

Dan Lawson '69 has retired from Emmanual Christian Seminary (Tennessee) after 30 years of administration. He now lives in Elizabethtown, Tennessee, with his wife Linda.

Glenn Hinman '69 is a retired private and public school teacher and principle. Glenn taught grades three through eight for 37 years and was a elementary principal for 12 years. He and his wife Antoinette have two grown children and 10 grandchildren.

Rev. John Powell '72 retired as the senior pastor of Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church in San Diego in 2016. He and his wife Pamela now live in Wheaton, Illinois, where their daughter and three of their nine grandchildren reside. John is currently a part-time pastor at Park View Presbyterian Church in Oak Park.

Dr. Doug Priest '74 recently presented at Oregon Christian Convention's Seniorfest in Turner, Oregon. Doug serves with Christian Missionary Fellowship International and is based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Jonni (Byrne) Kimbambazi '10 and her husband serve with Youth With a Mission (YMAM) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She recently returned to NCU to share her missionary experiences with students interested in overseas service.

Madeleine Nelson '17 has been accepted in the University of Utah doctoral program in physical therapy. She will move to Salt Lake City, Utah, to pursue the program.

Bailey Dell ’18 competed in the Canadian Track and Field Championships, securing fifth place in the Javelin. She continues her training in Canada in the hopes of representing Canada at an international level. She is also working as a rehabilitation assistant at a longterm care facility and hopes to get her accelerated nursing degree in the near future. She recently returned to campus to receive her championship ring from the 2018 NAIA National Track and Field Championship where she became the first athlete from NCU to earn a first place medal in any NAIA national competition.

Zoe Herron '18 is moving to China for the next year to teach English to college students.

Kenneth Blackwell '18 is serving as an officer in the U.S. Army and playing basketball for the All Army team. He and his wife Hina '17 live in Hawaii where she teaches early elementary school.

Emily Moon '19 was accepted into the doctor of physical therapy program (DPT) at University of Southern California (USC).

The DPT at USC is currently ranked among the very best in the country.

Teresa Smalls '18 has been commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry Division. She is one of the first female officers to be awarded this rank in this division.

Jordan Norris '19 has been hired by Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as the operations director. Jordan completed her internship with FCA which led to her permanent position.

Kaitlyn (Graham) Bailey '18 married Drew Bailey.

Angela Cusano '19 is the new office manager and visit coordinator at NCU. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications and was highly involved in campus ministry during her time as a student.

Maci Beierle '18 has accepted a position as the marketing and sales coordinator for Vine Tech Equipment in Prosser, Washington.

Joe Raade '18 will be the president of the Cottage Grove (Oregon) Community Foundation. Joe recently returned from serving in Florida during hurricane Michael as a logistics section chief on the incident management team.

Garrett Kraal '18 has been accepted in the University of Utah doctoral program in physical therapy. He will move to Salt Lake City, Utah, to pursue the program.

Holly Mathews '18 serves the City of Eugene Police Department as the executive assistant to the Eugene (Oregon) police chief.

Gabrielle Morales '19 will attend University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education in Fall 2019.

Gabe Piechowicz '19 was ordained the week of commencement and will serve Westside Christian Church in Eugene, Oregon as their new senior pastor.

Why I Give

Honoring Our Mother, Securing The Future It was the easiest pitch that I have ever made. As a former public relations agency owner, I have made hundreds of them.

Attending the first Blessing of the Hands Ceremony for nurses graduating from NCU’s RN to BSN program, I walked back to my office on campus to call my brother and sister. It was time for us to honor our mother.

She was a hard working, tough, no-nonsense registered nurse who worked in psychiatric and geriatric nursing until she was almost 80. I knew what I wanted. The three of us were going to make it happen.

our beds made with hospital corners. Even if we weren’t, she was in bed early. We were all out of bed early. If I made a lot of noise after 9 pm on a work night, my mom was quick to remind me that people were depending on her to be at her best in the morning. She needed sleep – end of discussion. She believed nurses provide the consistent, compassionate care required for people to heal and to manage their physical and mental health. Nurses play a critical role in the healing continuum.

Our mom loved being a nurse.

By choice she continued working long after she could have hung up her uniform.

Her friends were nurses. She trained nurses. She could talk about nursing for hours. Three days a week and every other weekend, she was proud to wear her white uniform, nursing cap, and nursing school pin.

It was a reminder and source of professional pride of the sacrifice required for her and my grandparents to rise out of poverty and into lives of giving.

Meeting Dr. Linda Veltri, NCU’s director of nursing and an associate professor, talking with the graduating students and their families, and watching the Blessing of The Hands was the motivation for me to ask my brother and sister to fund the Helen Stafford Walsh, RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship.

Through our individual contributions, monthly contributions through NCU’s Torchbearer’s Society, and a matching gift from my brother in-law’s employer, Johnson Controls, we funded our mom’s scholarship.

Our family lived the regiment that comes with our mom being a nurse from her era.

Everything had a place, and everything was in its place.

Our bedrooms were kept to hospital standards, including

NCU’s Evening of Tribute to Honor Ethical Business Leaders

Northwest Christian University’s Center for Leadership and Ethics (CLE) honored Eugene business leaders John Alvord, Forrest Technical Coatings, and One Hope as the 2019 recipients of the Exemplary Ethical Leader Awards. The CLE presented its highest community honor at its annual Evening of Tribute gala on Thurs., May 9, 2019, at the Hotel Eugene, formerly the Eugene Hilton. Evening of Tribute was presented by Moss Adams.

“We are pleased to honor these community members for their commitment to establish and promote a business culture where honorable and ethical practices are the foundation for personal, organization and community relevance,” said Susan Soonkeum Cox, Vice President for Policy and External Affairs at Holt International, a CLE Advisory Board member, and NCU Trustee.

Established in 2005, NCU’s Center for Leadership and Ethics equips and inspires ethical leaders by providing faith-integrated and values-based education and mentorship to NCU students, alumni, and the community. The Exemplary Ethical Leader Awards are chosen and awarded annually by the Center’s Advisory Board. In 1959, JOHN ALVORD moved to Eugene to continue a banking career. He joined his wife, Willa, in founding Alvord Taylor Inc., a non-profit corporation whose mission was to assist the adult developmentally challenged realize their potential. As a 44-year Rotarian, he follows the Rotary motto: “service above self,” which has guided him to past leadership positions in United Way of Lane County, Eugene Arts Foundation, Lane Community College Foundation, Eugene Airport Rotary, Sacred Heart Medical Foundation, and now Eugene Active 20-30. He also supports many other worthy charities including St. Vincent DePaul, the Eugene Opera, Pearl Buck Center, and Northwest Christian University. John and Willa, his wife of 45 years, have adopted seven children who have presented them with sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Oregon-native Scott Forrest and his wife Cecelia founded Forrest Paint Company in 1973 with the express purpose to create a friendly and familysupportive workplace. Now known globally as FORREST TECHNICAL COATINGS and under second-generation leadership, Forrest supports the families of over 120 employees as a local retailer of house paint, a major industrial coatings provider for the Pacific Northwest, and a market leader on a global scale in high temperature resistant coatings. Along the way, Forrest has given to countless organizations and focuses especially on programs that provide support to kids and families, the arts, and affordable housing and homelessness. Forrest is also a leader in finding innovative solutions to lessen the environmental impact of their processes and products.

In Memoriam Richard R. Crane '57 passed away on Jan. 12, 2018 at the age of 89. After graduating from Northwest Christian College, he worked for 29 years for the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronic engineer. Richard served for many years as an elder at the Shoreline Christian Church in Seattle, Washington. He is survived by his wife Myrtlemay (Pittman) Crane '59 and their three children Radine Herrick, Raymond Crane, and Rodney Crane as well as two grandchildren, Peter and Sarah Crane.

Carolyn Rose "Lynnie" Bailey Evans '69 passed away on March 5, 2018. Born in Medford, Oregon, on Dec. 13, 1946, she graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1965 and from Northwest Christian College in 1969. She and her husband Rev. Dr. John Evans '69 had two children and were active in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) throughout their lives. Carolyn and John settled in Corvallis, Oregon, in 1991 and actively served First Christian of Corvallis in their various ministries to people in need. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as an avid gardener and seamstress. She is survived by her husband John, her children Jeremiah and Emily, and her grandchildren.

Howard L. Neal '54 passed away on Oct. 11, 2018 at the age of 88. Howard was a graduate of Molalla High School and attended Northwest Christian College to prepare for a life of ministry. He married wife Betty and they were married for 66 years. Howard attended Drake Divinity School after graduating from NCU and spent most of his years serving the Christian church in Pomeroy, Washington. He is survived by his wife, children, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou McCauley Burrows (1951-1952) passed away on Oct. 23, 2018 at the age of 86. She was born in Palco, Kansas and attended Northwest Christian College for one year before entering politics. She served as the secretary for the California Republican Assembly, acted as the campaign chairman for both Oregon Senator Bob Packwood (1967) and Governor Tom McCall (1970).

She served as a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from 1973 - 1987, as a Republican in the 4th District (which included NCC and the University of Oregon). She helped paved the way for women in state politics and was one of only a handful of females serving in the legislature at the time. She and her husband of 66 years, Charles, raised four children in the First Christian Church (Eugene, Oregon) and were lifelong members.

She is survived by her husband and children, seven grandchildren, a brother, and many nieces and nephews.

Friend of the University, Shirley L. McMurtrey was born April 10, 1923, in Mountain Home, Idaho. She graduated from Mountain Home High school as valedictorian in 1941 and went on to work at the Elmore County Courthouse as deputy auditor, recorder, and deputy clerk

of the District Court. Shirley married A. Dale McMurtrey on April 6, 1943 while Dale was serving in the U.S. Navy.

They eventually moved to Boise, Idaho, in 1948 where Shirley became member of the Boise Chapter No. 65, O.E.S., Kemi Court #55, L.O.S., Social Order of Beauceants, Court #137 and Iras Temple #40, Daughters of the Nile, where she served on the Iras guard drill team for 15 years and served as queen of the temple in 1980.

She was a member of the John Regan post #2, and the American Legion Auxillary. Shirley and Dale owned and operated the Summer Funeral home from 1956 to 1988.

Shirley and Dale were known for their compassion.

Throughout their community they were always willing to take in children who needed a place to stay and they assisted many young adults with their college educations.

Shirley and her husband have a son and a daughter, Scott and Shirley Anne, as well as two granddaughters Crystal and Misty and five great-grandsons. Shirley is survived by her three sisters Glenna Tooman, June Zillisch, and Mary Gill as well as many nieces and nephews with whom she was very close.

Kathy (Lester) Gough (1968-1971) passed away on Dec. 20, 2018. She attended Northwest Christian College where she met her future husband, James (Jim) Gough '70. She spent much of her career in the field of compliance with Pacific Mutual. In her free time she enjoyed singing in her church choir and volunteering in local hospitals. Kathy is survived by her husband Jim, her twin sister Dorothy, and her brothers Loren and David. Jim and Kathy most recently made their home together in Irvine, California.

Wayne H. Watkins '67 passed away on Jan. 22, 2019.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1942 to Hugh and Stella Watkins.

Wayne's life was defined by his principles and Christian faith. He was an accountant for 40 years, on the Bethel school board for 32 years, and spent several years on the Eugene Mission board. He was a lifelong blood donor and volunteered at schools and the hospital. He was also an active member of the North Park Community Church.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy '67, along with their two sons Rick and Greg.

Friend of the University, Betty Jo Johnson died on Jan. 28, 2019 at the age of 93. Betty Jo was born in 1925 in Lakeland, Florida, where she attended the University of Tampa. She was deeply involved in Tampa's first Christian Church and it was at this time when she met her husband Harold Victor Johnson, Jr. Betty Jo and Harold moved to Eugene where they became active in Eugene's First Christian Church. Betty Jo is survived by her three children Sharon, Rick, and Susan her four grandchildren Devon, Jodi, Kim and Julie as well as seven great-grandchildren.

In Memoriam Dwight Woodruff '74 died tragically in a house fire on Feb. 14, 2019. He graduated from Northwest Christian College with a degree in pastoral ministry. Dwight founded the New Hope Christ Fellowship Church in Anacortes, Washington in 1999. Dwight is survived by his loving daughter Nicole who is also an NCU alum class of 2001. Reverend Woodruff was known for his huge heart and huge personality to match. He will be missed by many.

Friend of the University, Lois P. Morse, passed away on Feb. 18, 2019. Lois was born in Venice, California, and graduated from Salem High School (Oregon). She met her husband, alumnus William (Bill) Morse and married in 1944. Their 69 years of marriage was full of travel, adventure and quiet philanthropy. She was a stay-athome mom and enjoyed raising her three children, two of whom attended NCU. The Morses were lifelong members of Harrisburg (Oregon) Christian Church. She is survived by her son Ray (Phyllis) Morse, son Greg (Tish) Morse, and daughter Diana (John) Perdue, along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Dorothy Genevieve Porter (1944-1947) passed peacefully in her sleep on March 14th, 2019. Dorothy was born Feb. 5, 1926 and adopted by Adolph and Harriett Hoven. She grew up in Tillamook, Oregon.

Dorothy married Arnie when she was 20 and they shared 73 years of marriage together. Dorothy and Arnie were a U.S. Air Force family. They lived across four countries moving 14 times while having three children along the way. Dorothy studied music at Northwest Christian College and became a worship musician. She sang, played piano and organ, and conducted prize winning choirs. It was common for Dorothy to have not just family and friends over, but also friends of friends, and sometimes even strangers sharing meals. One of several foster children once said they should have a sign on the door that says: "Come in and stay if you need to." The compassion that Dorothy shared with all those around her will be greatly missed.

Peter N. Anderson '79 passed away on April 5, 2019.

Peter spent most of his adult years in Oregon and was married to Vernadene, for 30 years. Peter was deeply devoted to his church and to creation care. He and Vernadene had three children (Patrick, Samuel, and Regan) and seven grandchildren.

Lucien Mills Harriman '56 passed away on April 10, 2019 in Sweet Home, Oregon. Mills attended Northwest Christian College where he met Catherine (Thiemens) Harriman '58, whom he married in 1955. Mills spent 30 years teaching elementary school in the Sweet Home School District. He is survived by his two sons, Bill (Edwina) Harriman and Marty (Sheila) Harriman, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

David Earl Haverstock, M. A. ’04 passed away on April 24, 2019, from cancer at the age of 74. He was born to Earl and Ellen Haverstock in Pasadena, California. He and his family moved to Coquille, Oregon, in the late 1960s.

Dave graduated from Northwest Christian College with a master of arts in school counseling. He volunteered for 28 years as a school mentor and coordinator, specializing in working with students affected by autism. He was also a realtor in Eugene, Oregon for 26 years with his wife, Nancy. They were one of the first married couples to partner in the real estate business in Eugene/Springfield.

Dave served on many local boards of directors. He was nominated by United Way as a community service Volunteer of the Month in 2012, "inspiring the children, their families, and the employees at Bridgeway House" and again in 2016 as one of eight mentor coordinators for the Lunchtime Mentor Program. He was nominated for the AARP Andrus Award in 2016. He is survived by his spouse of 41 years, Nancy Sundquist Haverstock; his daughter, Kali Pelham '90 (Mark) of Sartell, Minnesota; grandchildren Samina and Erica; his son Ty Hodson (Prajna) of Eugene, Oregon; and grandchildren Oliver and Rose. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Johanna.

Harold Robert Hake '61 passed away on May 11, 2019.

Harold served as the pastor of First Christian Church in Gooding, Idaho. Harold was a native of the Willamette Valley and attended Northwest Christian College after working in lumber mills until his late 20s. He was married to Barbara (Robertson) for 62 years and they had two children (Nancy and Gary). He was ordained after graduation, serving churches in Goshen and Mill City, Oregon. He is survived by his son, Gary, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Cliffton Peightal '52 passed away on July 14, 2018 at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Arlene, and their four children Lisa, David, Karen, and Stephen. Cliff was born in Lodi, California to Kenneth and Myrtie Peightal. He was one of four sons and grew up during the Great Depression. After graduating from High School, he joined the U.S. Navy (1945-1948). After Cliff graduated from Northwest Christian College, he married Arlene in 1952. Cliff went on to earn a master of divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary as well as a masters in social work from Washington State University. He was ordained a minister at Lodi Christian Church in 1952 and served as a minister for many years.

Cliff worked as a social worker as well, helping youth and senior citizens. Cliff loved his family, friends, the Lord, and this free country. He gave generously with no expectation of recognition or reward.
