Many don’t know that Eugene’s Police Chief is an NCU grad. So is the Mayor of Creswell. Another key community leader, the General Manager of the Eugene Water and Electric Board, was educated for that role right here at NCU. The list goes on, from Fire Chief to County Commissioner to business, education, non-profit and, of course, church leaders. For a university of our size, NCU enjoys disproportionate representation at key points of community influence.

This might be surprising to some, perhaps because these exemplary leaders are living their faith, not trumpeting it.

They apply faith to their leadership positions with excellence and service, and a few are humming the Alma Mater (All hail to you dear NCU), while making this community a better place. Many NCU graduates pour out their passion and skill right here—and it’s a good thing. Our city and surrounding region are beautiful but broken. The need is significant.

I hope you enjoy reading the stories of a few of these outstanding alumni in the following pages. You’ll be encouraged, as I am, to see what “Wisdom, Faith and Service” can bring to our community.

Northwest Christian University conferred 78 degrees at Winter Commencement on Fri., Dec. 16 2016 in the Morse Event Center. Bachelor’s degrees were conferred for 40 undergraduate students and 38 graduate students received master’s degrees. Winter Commencement marked the first graduating class of students in the RN to BSN program.

Randall Gross, M.S., systems director of learning and development at PeaceHealth in Vancouver, Washington, and adjunct faculty member in the RN to BSN program gave the commencement address. He was instrumental in working with key members of NCU and PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center to establish the RN to BSN program in 2015.

Blessing of the Hands: Caring is the Heart of Nursing Prior to graduation, Commencement Speaker Randall Gross, a former pastor, led the Blessing of the Hands ceremony in the Evans Chapel. During this ceremony graduating RN to BSN students and other nurses in attendance were invited to have their hands blessed with a special blend of oils created for the blessing.

“Caring is at the heart of nursing,” said Dr. Linda Veltri, Associate Professor and Director of NCU’s RN to BSN program. “Blessing the hands of our graduates and other nurses, who daily use their hands to convey caring, serves as a reminder of the art and spiritual heritage of the profession.”

UniversityNews America’s Best Christian Colleges: Northwest Christian University Northwest Christian University is ranked among America’s Best Christian Colleges as determined by the 26th Annual National College Survey administered by Institutional Research and Evaluation, Inc. “We are pleased to be included in this prestigious list of Christian institutions of higher education,” said Joseph Womack, Ed.D., President of Northwest Christian University. “Being ranked among America’s Best Christian Colleges is a testament to our faculty, staff, and friends commitment to provide NCU students with a Christ-focused education that integrates Wisdom Faith and Service into the learning and social experience at our institution.”

NCU is listed among some of the nation’s most outstanding Christian academic institutions, including: Pepperdine University, Hope College, Santa Clara University, University of Notre Dame, Gordon College, Wheaton College, Calvin College, Baylor University, Marquette University, Lipscomb University, and College of the Holy Cross.

More than 1,100 Christian universities and colleges were surveyed. Only 100 institutions were selected based on the GPA/SAT scores of the freshman class in the fall of 2015, the integration of Christian principals and faith within the curriculum and social environment, active involvement with the Church, and the overall quality of the campus facilities. Institutions did not pay to participate in the survey or ranking.

Leadership: Serving, Believing, Loving I

N THE SIMPLEST TERMS, leadership means exerting influence. More completely, leadership involves harnessing tools and talents to inspire and equip people for movement— hopefully in positive directions.

The Christian university, as much as any other institution, is poised to model, teach and encourage leadership. In NCU vernacular, we ignite Beacons, world-changers in numerous fields who have identified and accepted a call to lead. This is who we are and who we’ve always been. It’s in our founding documents, our mission statement and our vision. We see it in our classroom strategies and our communal life. At NCU, we equip students to discover and answer God’s call in their lives.

That being said, the flame of excellent leadership is sparked by a Christian world view. Jesus, the founder of our faith, taught and modeled an approach to influence that remains both provocative and transformative after two thousand years.

Events for all alumni and friends included campus tours, campus-wide Chapel, a celebration brunch, family carnival and a fall NCU Music concert. All who attended were invited to the men’s and women’s soccer matches and women’s volleyball games. Finally, the men’s and women’s alumni basketball games capped off the weekend.

First, Jesus teaches us to serve, rather than to be served. i While all of Christian history upholds the authority of Jesus, we also celebrate the way he carries that authority. He says, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light,” ii while he preaches deep internal peace to accompany a life of personal sacrifice. His actions amplify his teaching. At a pivotal moment before his own death, he washes the feet of his apprentices and then urges them to imitate with similar kindness. iii If there are moments of heavy and harsh direction from Jesus, they are saved for control freaks and those who place undo burdens on others. iv He points to a better way. Even secular thought leaders today are promoting servant leadership as the prime approach to success. “In the past, a leader was a boss. Today’s leaders must be partners with their people… they no longer can lead based solely on positional power.” iv The leader exists to serve associates, employees, constituencies, clients and customers while engaging them in a winning experience for all parties.

Second, Jesus believes in people. One of the extraordinary factors in the expansion of the Christian enterprise is that it was originally entrusted into the hands of a few loyal students after

only a three-year training program. While Jesus invites us to believe in him, it’s significant to note how much Jesus believes in us. This core optimism about human potential is a hallmark of the best leaders, who are able to recruit and sustain teams that are loaded with the best players.

Finally, love leads. While love doesn’t have to be touchy or gooey, the best leaders actually care. Caring about the quality of a product, sold at a reasonable price, makes lives richer and better.

Positive, thoughtful customer service creates lift for the client or customer. The culture of the winning workplace doesn’t deplete workers; it feeds and engages their best energy and creativity.

Love sacrifices. Love works.

At NCU, we teach all of these values and qualities unashamedly in a context of “wisdom, faith and service.” Combine that effort with an intimate student-teacher ratio and a community where it’s tough to hide from people who care. The outcome? We launch leaders who are becoming proficient in these Jesus-like strategies.

This makes our graduates extraordinarily employable and inordinately successful.

As you continue to read, be inspired by stories of just a few NCU graduates who are shining like Beacons in our immediate region.

LOOKING FOR A GOOD BOOK ABOUT LEADERSHIP?

NCU Leaders in Our Community Bruce Hanna ’96

Former Oregon State Legislator Bruce Hanna grew up in Roseburg, Oregon, as a child of Coca Cola.

His father owned and operated the bottling company, and Bruce grew up learning the business. When the time was right, the operation passed into Bruce’s care. By all evidences of success, some would have said “enough” to the notion of more education.

But Hanna decided to go back to school at NCU. “Besides finishing my education, NCU reoriented my spiritual life. It helped me incorporate what a Christian leader does with a business.”

As for the business itself, Hanna gets really expressive. “I came with an associate’s degree and decades of practical experience.

But the formal training in accounting and human resources and all the rest turbocharged my practical knowledge.”

That extra boost has translated into the steady growth of his business around the region into an ever-broadening realm of influence. And that influence even opened the door to a season in politics, where Bruce served as the Co-Speaker of the House of Representatives in Salem. “I wouldn’t trade my political experience for anything. It was great training. And the faith that was deepened at NCU made the harder parts survivable because my faith was rooted in Him.” Now a wider cut of the Hanna family has gotten into the NCU experience.

Teresa, Bruce’s wife, completed a Masters in Business Administration in 2013. Their son Garrett is currently working on a degree and a nephew is also on the path. “I personally love the family legacy of continuing to build the NCU institution; but it’s also good for our family.”

Eugene Chief of Police

Eugene Police Chief Pete Kerns has one of the most challenging and high-profile positions in a community that is never short on ideas about how the Eugene Police Department can serve its public.

Beginning as a reserve police officer in the early 1980s, Kerns worked his way through the department ranks as a patrol officer, a detective, and a sergeant while also serving on many of the department’s various

specialized tactical and investigative teams. In 1999, he was promoted to lieutenant, serving as EPD’s West Sector commander and as a watch commander.

“I knew when I was promoted to lieutenant that I had to complete a bachelor’s degree if I wanted to be considered for future promotions,” said Kerns, who had attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “Earning a bachelor’s degree was something that I wanted to finish for a long time and I wanted to completed it before our children started college.”

He chose Northwest Christian University after researching universities that offered adult degree programs aimed at working professionals returning to school, “I liked the people and, for me, the fact that the program was taught in a Christian environment,” Kerns said. “I could see that completing a bachelor’s degree at NCU was achievable.”

He says the classes were “excellent.” They were challenging, and added to his growing skill-set for managing programs and leading people.

What came to be an unexpected benefit of the NCU experience was learning and studying with a cohort of people from different parts of the community who were committed to travel the same path to a bachelor’s degree.

“Our cohort met on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays,” he said.

“We learned together, we socialized together, and during that period of time, we shared a lot of life’s challenges. Together we entered into a whole new community.”

As if that isn’t enough, Bruce served for two terms as a Trustee at NCU, where he has championed the growth of non-traditional student programs and the mission of our university. “I totally agree with the integration of faith and education.”

Earning a bachelor’s degree paid off soon after graduation when he was promoted to captain. A few years later his career would take another forward step.

Widely recognized for his integrity, operational expertise, effective - Bruce Hanna '96 leadership, and strong relationships with the community’s diverse population, the Eugene native assumed duties as the chief of police in 2008.

“My job is to ensure that the department adheres to its vision, follows its mission, lives by its values, and reinforces the City’s expectations for preventing and managing crime to keep the community and the officers safe,” Kerns said.

With her children in high school, Denise Jubber decided it was time to go back to school to finish a bachelor’s degree she had started years ago as a physical education major. Finding a college or university to attend in the 1990’s, while living in Glendale, Oregon, population 866, presented a challenge.

“Online classes didn’t exist at any university I was aware of when I enrolled in Northwest Christian’s Adult Degree Program,” Jubber said. “So I drove to Roseburg to take classes taught there at the time by NCU professors, while raising my family and continuing to work.”

In 1998, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from NCU, but her education and relationship with the University didn’t end after a walk across the stage to accept her diploma.

During the next several years she continued working in financial services.

But, even with a successful career, she felt a perpetual tug on her heart to do more, to do something for others. Jubber would enter NCU in 2009, but this time as a student in the Master of Arts in Community Counseling program.

“I wanted to be counselor or a social worker,” Jubber said. “ When I was looking for the right graduate program, I connected with Amy Ford, who at the time was the director of NCU’s community counseling program. She understood what I wanted to do with my life and knew that I wanted to earn a master’s degree in a faith-friendly environment. NCU was the right place to do it.”

She says during her time as a student NCU, two professors had a profound influence on her work and spiritual life.

“Professor Mick Bollenbaugh changed me,” Jubber said. Dr. Bollenbaugh, a professor of Philosophy and Biblical studies exposed her to Christianity in ways very different than she had known previously. “He broadened my view of faith.”

She also said that retired NCU Professor Alan Belcher instilled a passion in her for servant leadership. “He opened me up to a whole new body of knowledge that I integrated into my life in the financial services industry and, now, as the director of growing department in a social service agency that serves a diverse and challenging clientele.”

“I work with really smart people and our job is extremely complex,” Kerns said. “Our senior staff and officers are dedicated professionals that do an exemplary job of working with people.”

After graduation, she went to work as a therapist, and eventually landed at Hawes Financial Group, as the Behavioral Science Director where she led leadership trainings and Lean process improvement initiatives for the company. She used the 40 hours of paid volunteer time the company gave employees to volunteer at the Eugene Mission, a privately-funded Christian nonprofit agency. Its professional staff and volunteers serve more than 850 meals per day and provides a bed to 400 or more of the

While much of his time as a City executive is devoted to leading a department with a $50 million budget, 190 sworn officers, and 130 support staff, he is hands on with other senior staff in managing the department’s day-to-day operations. In fact, it is not uncommon to see Chief Kerns directing traffic at a University of Oregon football game.

Kerns has served the community as a member of the Eugene Police Department for more than 33 years. A bachelor’s degree from NCU, combined with experience and law enforcement training, helped him develop the skills and academic credentials necessary to lead one of the largest organizations in the city.

“In 2015, I was hired at the Mission to create and lead the new Supportive Services Department, which allows the Mission to provide behavioral health services to those in need,” Jubber said.

“I love having the opportunity to use all of my education and business experience to create programs.”

At any given time, Jubber and her four colleagues will work with as many as 300 Mission guests. “We don’t ‘reinvent the social services wheel’,” she said. “Our team connects our clients to the social services and counseling they need from the many public and private collaborating agencies in the community that can help them to get well and live their best life.”

How Lawson, a graduate of South Eugene High School and Oregon State University, arrived back in his hometown is as simple as opening the mail.

“We wanted to be closer to my family,” said Lawson, who was living in Klamath Falls at the time. “I was looking at my father’s EWEB bill and read a notice for an electrical engineering supervisor. I applied earn a master's and several months later was hired.”

Frank Lawson MBA ’15 General Manager, EWEB

When you walk into Frank Lawson’s office at the Eugene Water and Electric Board’s new headquarters on Roosevelt Boulevard in Eugene, you find yourself in what may be the biggest room in the building.

However, Lawson is quick to tell you that the simple work station in the corner, along a wall of windows looking out into the main lobby, is his, and that his senior staff will work just a few feet away from him at their work stations in the same room.

“I am not a corner office guy,” Lawson said. “It is important to have people you work with close by so that you can quickly come together as a team to focus on the issues and opportunities that face customers and employees today, and in the future.”

The EWEB’s executive suite sets expectations for how the utilities’ more than 500 employees will work together to serve its customers. For Lawson, it is all about collaboration, strategy, tactical implementation, and evaluation. The job is to improve customer services, identify efficiencies, and find solutions to better deliver water and electricity to the utility’s 86,000 customers by carefully managing an always-sensitive water supply and nimbly managing an ever-changing power market.

In June 2016, Lawson was named the EWEB’s general manager after just six years with the utility and six months after graduating from NCU with an MBA. EWEB Commissioner and Board President John Simpson told Eugene’s The Register-Guard newspaper that, “He’s (Lawson) a very visionary and strategic planner and leader. He excelled in the

enrolled in 2013.

“When you combine professional experience with graduate business education, an MBA gives you the ability to look at things very differently,” Lawson said.

To balance work, family and school, he developed a routine that fit classes and studying into Thursday and Friday evenings, Saturday mornings, and Sundays. He cited NCU Assistant Business Professor Dave Quirk’s classes on strategic management as stand outs in the 12-class MBA program.

“The emphasis on case studies was extremely valuable,” he said. “You could relate the information being taught to real life examples from well-known corporations.”

His cohort also brought a breadth of experience and diverse perspectives that contributed significantly to the learning environment.

“Discussing case studies and class assignment with professionals from varied disciplines and experiences added important depth and meaning to the learning experience,” Lawson said.

He said the two years to complete the NCU MBA went by “fast.”

“We are never done learning as individuals and organizations,” Lawson said. “We must continue to find new and better ways to do our jobs and live our lives.”

Joe Zaludek ’12

Fire Chief Eugene-Springfield Emergency Services Department

Joe Zaludek was set to take the next step up the career ladder in the Eugene-Springfield Fire and Emergency Services Department. In 2012, he had completed a bachelor’s degree in

interdisciplinary studies with emphasis in business administration, management and operations through NCU’s Adult Degree Program. Zaludek was ready for whatever opportunities the Fire Chief and the community would send his way.

Little did he know the department ladder he was climbing would temporarily take him away from fire trucks, ambulances, reports, and training to protecting the City of Eugene’s information technology systems and infrastructure.

During a typical year, Eugene-Springfield firefighters/paramedics will respond to 32,000 calls. That is more than 80 calls every 24 hours.

“My NCU education has an important role in an exciting career that allows me to mix physical work with the intellectual in order to help people,” Zaludek said.

“I was all set to go to the National Fire Academy for additional education, when I was told that I was being loaned to the City’s Central Services Department to serve as Interim Director of Technology,” Zaludek said. “For me, it was a new department, a new job, new challenges, new colleagues, and new expectations— and I had only taken one IT management class at NCU.” Over the next nine months, Zaludek and the Central Services IT team were charged to keep the City IT infrastructure and its data safe. He led a team that developed and implemented new training policies and standard operating procedures. They integrated new technologies into the City’s IT infrastructure---all aimed to keep hackers out of City computers, software and systems.

“Every day there was a new challenge that required research, data analysis, and a decision,” Zaludek said. “Like being a firefighter/ paramedic, the challenges we managed in IT were in ‘real time’ that often used the same problem-solving skill-set required to fight fires.”’

Brian Johnson MBA ’O5 Senior Power Analyst, EPUD

After starting out in sports business and then banking, Brian Johnson, MBA ‘05 wanted to enroll in a master of business administration degree program that would help him to take the next step in his career.

“I looked at several programs, but after interviewing the director of the MBA program and several faculty members, I knew I belonged at NCU,” Johnson said. “The classes were more diverse in content than other MBA programs, it was accredited, flexible, and highly ranked for returning value to its graduates.”

A graduate of the University of Oregon’s Lundquist College of Business, Johnson attended NCU’s MBA program on campus for two years while working full-time at West Coast Bank. Assistant Professor Dave Quirk provided what Zaludek called “a reality check of what it is like to really be a manager.” He says Quirk’s classes were challenging and he held students to a high degree of accountability that prepared him for the business side of the Fire and Emergency Services Department.

Professor Tim Bergquist taught Quantitative Analysis, the research skills Zaludek used as Interim IT Director and in his current position. “He (Bergquist) was tough, but fair.”

Zaludek calls History Professor Ron Palmer’s history class “one of the best courses I have taken any where.” He said that through classroom discussions and presentations he learned to “own” the opinions and ideas he shared in class, “he taught me to present my information as if I was part of it.”

In May 2016, Zaludek was named Interim Fire Chief. He is responsible for leading a department comprised of 305 firefighter/ paramedics and 265 sworn staff and support personnel who work from 16 fire stations throughout Eugene and Springfield, including

Today, Johnson is the senior power analyst at Emerald People’s Utility District. If you live in parts of rural Lane County, when you flip on a light switch, there is a good chance Johnson or his manager negotiated the rate and bought the electricity generated to illuminate the light bulb in the room.

“Since graduating, I have had professional opportunities and experiences I wouldn’t have had without an MBA from NCU,” Johnson said.

Q&A with Sam Kamkar ’04 Captain of Patrol Eugene Police Department ent

NCU Alumnus Sam Kamkar commands Eugene Police Department’s Patrol Division. He reports directly to the Chief of Police and is responsible for six lieutenants, 16 sergeants, 120 officers and other support staff, including patrol, S.W.A.T., crisis negotiation team, traffic enforcement, schools, Eugene airport, K-9 officers, scheduling, crime prevention, and downtown.

He took some time to talk with NCU’s Director of Alumni Relations, Corynn Gilbert, about the role earning a bachelor’s degree from NCU has played in his career.

CG: Tell me about how you got started at EPD? SK: Like everyone else, I started out as a recruit and eventually worked my way to the rank of Captain. How I ended up in this role? By the Grace of God, a lot of hard work, long hours, commitment to excellence in everything that I did, and a relentless desire for public service.

CG: At what point in your career did you start your college degree, and how did you end up returning to complete your undergraduate degree at NCU? SK: I began college right out of high school, but for primarily financial reasons, I ended up dropping out of school until later in life when I enrolled in NCU’s Adult Degree Program while working full

Over the past 11 years, more than 40 community leaders have served as mentors to nearly 150 future alumni. Mentors and mentees meet often to talk about school, careers, and life.

“Steve Schmidt helped me to understand and relate what was being taught in class with my every day work as a development officer.” Vargas said. “Dr. Kennedy was so patient. He is an excellent educator.”

CLE members come together with the campus and local business community for the annual Grace and Truth Forum featuring national keynote speakers who address issues about faith and leadership. Previous speakers have included Andy Crouch, executive editor of Christianity Today and noted author; Thomas McCormick ’56 D.MIN ’07, lectures on medical ethics and pastoral care at the University of Washington; and John W. Tastad ’84, spiritual care counselor with Sharp Hospice Care in San Diego, California.

CG: What were some of the challenges and/or benefits to completing your degree at this stage of your life/career and through the ADP format?

SK: The biggest challenge was time followed by finances. How does one balance his life between college, wife, two young boys, fishing, karate, parents, family, church, and of course that thing called work. Well, the answer was simple: You don’t get to have everything - all the time; so, I learned to prioritize and put some things on hold. As for finances, like most other students, I took advantage of government loans.

The benefit of completing my degree at this stage of my life versus when I was fresh out of high school became evident in my comprehension of the lectures and study material. Except for that painful class called statistics, I was able to rely on my own personal and professional experiences to write papers and work on my management project.

The ADP format was perfect and exactly what I needed.

CG: How did completing your degree impact you personally and professionally?

SK: On a professional level, my career did not require me to have a 4-year degree; at least not as a line level police officer.

As I moved up in rank, my management degree gave me a competitive edge over other applicants and it has helped me

tremendously with the business aspect of running a police department.

As a minority, I quickly discovered that I frequently had to outperform many of my colleagues to fit in or to be considered competent at my job. Early on in my career, my field-training officer (from another police agency) let me know how he and a few others felt about having an Iranian-American being a police officer in the United States. One day my trainer said to me, “I bet you don’t even have a degree, yet here you are...I bet you got accepted [to the force] on your first try…” I knew then that getting my degree was not an option. So, on a personal level, finishing my degree became a personal challenge.

CG: As a person of faith, how important was it for you to seek an educational experience that strives to integrate faith and learning?

SK: Integrating my new faith and learning could not have come at a better time. As a new Christian, I was thirsty for the knowledge of the Bible. It was comforting to know that my school of choice was designed from the ground up to help its student body spiritually as well as academically.

CG: What does it mean for you to integrate your faith into your professional life?

SK: As a professional public servant, I am somewhat limited to what I can or cannot openly share about my faith while I am in the workplace. To that end, I strive to integrate my faith into my workplace by focusing on one of my most favorite Bible verses – Corinthians 16:14, “Let all that you do be done in love.”

NCU Men Make NAIA Div. II Top 16

FALL SPORTS BRIEFS

Women’s Cross Country Finishes as National Runners-Up

For the second year in a row, Northwest Christian University (25-6) advanced to the second round of the NAIA Div. II National Championships in Point Lookout, Missouri, March 8-14. After a 91-87 victory over Midland University (Neb.), the Beacons exited the tournament with a 73-68 loss to Indiana University East.

The regular season was capped with another Cascade Collegiate Conference title, the Conference Player of the Year, three all–conference performers, an Academic AllAmerica, and the Coach of the Year.

The 2016 women’s cross country season was another historic accomplishment as the Beacons earned a top-three finish at the NAIA National Championship for the third straight year. The team also won their third consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference title before finishing in second place at the NAIA race. Head Coach Heike McNeil earned her third CCC Coach of the Year award while Sierra Brown was named the CCC Runner of the Year for the second year in a row.

Brown and Alyssa Harmon both earned AllAmerican honors for the Beacons.

Senior Jay Mayernik was voted Player of the Year by CCC coaches. He averaged 16.7 points per game and led the NAIA Div. II with 12.7 rebounds per contest. Senior Jack Hackman and Sophomore Kenny Blackwell joined Mayernik on the All-Conference Team. Fourth year Head Coach Luke Jackson garnered conference Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.

Men’s Cross Country

Hackman added to his all-conference selection by being names a CoSIDA Academic All-America. The accounting major is one of 12 NAIA players to receive the award this season.

After qualifying as a team for the 2015 NAIA National Championship, the Beacons were unable to duplicate that effort this season after taking fifth place at the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship. Two individuals did qualify however as juniors Garrett Kraal and TJ Wright both earned bids after claiming All-CCC awards.

Men’s Soccer Experiences Record-Setting Season Second-year head coach Benny Flores brought in the largest roster in history in 2016 and it paid off. The 34-member Beacon men’s soccer team had a great season, going 8-8-2 with the most wins in program history. The team also broke school records for goals, shutouts, and conference victories and featured the first 4-0 start to a season.

Women’s Soccer Lands First Post-Season Appearance The Beacon women’s soccer team, under the direction of second-year head coach Jessica Cardwell, did something no team had done before in 2016 as they took seventh-place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference and qualified for the CCC playoffs. The team finished 7-11-1 and tied the record for most wins in a season while also scoring more goals than ever before. Their first post-season experience was brief, a first-round loss to Southern Oregon University, but the Beacons had 13 underclassmen on the roster who gained invaluable experience.

Big Wins Highlight Volleyball Season The Beacons might have missed the playoffs in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, but the 2016 season was not without its share of memorable moments.

In September the Beacons claimed a fiveset win over No. 24 Corban, marking their first win over a ranked opponent since 2012. The team pulled off another historic victory in October, defeating The College of Idaho for the first time in school history. The Yotes had won the previous 19 meetings. Then in November the Beacons pulled off their final major upset, defeating Southern Oregon University on the road for the first time.

Women Finish 4th: Thompson First – Team All Conference

Junior Monique Thompson was named a First-Team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference selection. Juniors Niki Duncan and Katerina Brejchova also garnered honorable mention.

Thompson's remarkable season was cut short by a knee injury that kept her out of the final eight games of the season, but she still finished the year as NCU's leader for points per game (16.2), assists (55), and steals (38).

The Beacons went 17-11 during the 2016-17 season, set a school-record with 14 conference victories, garnered a fourth-place finish in the conference and advanced to the post-season for the fifth straight year.

Dr. Jim and Valerie Bixler ’69 met at Northwest Christian College (now University). They married, had three children, then schooled and pastored for a total of 18 years. Jim served as an Army Chaplain and continued his education while Valerie worked and also served in an international women’s ministry for women associated with the military. She also began developing Living Oaks Ministry (originally called LIFE Ministry). They established Paraclaysis Inc., a non-profit organization that provides professional counseling, and the Living Oaks Restoration and Discipleship Ministry. Jim has continued his education, receiving his Psy.D. in the Spring of 2016. Valerie now teaches, writes, and ministers one-on-one to individuals. They live in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Ryan Herriage ’14 is serving as an ESL teacher in China to children between the ages of 4-15, working with a private company in the Changsha, Hunan province until August 2017. He primarily teaches vocabulary, grammar, and short stories to 4-10 year olds to build their English skills.

Lars Coburn ’14 is continuing his education at the Masters of Arts in Theology (MAT) program at Fuller Theological Seminary’s Orange County (California) campus. He’s an associate minister at Glendale Church of Christ.

Kelsay Gardiepy ’14 is a graduate teaching assistant at Wichita State University and is a copywriter at Ascential Digital Marketing. Kelsay lives in Wichita, Kansas.

Jason Haggard ’14 is a school age teacher/camp counselor at Orchards (California)YMCA Child Development Center. He ran his first half marathon and was one place away from a medal, placing 4th in his division.

Laurie Kallio Brown ’14, MBA ’14 has joined BSM Consulting, a healthcare and planning practice management firm, as a senior consultant. Based in Tucson, Arizona, she consults with individuals, groups, and corporate clients to optimize medical practices.

Allyssa (Ally) Mittleider '14, MA '16 recently got engaged to Cameron Goertzen. Ally is still serving in Cambodia as a Bloom Project Officer at Bloom Café.

Jazzy Villarruel ’14 married to Ethan Souers ’15 in December 2016. She is an admissions counselor at Northwest Christian University. He is presently touring with country music star, Jackson Michelson. Ethan plays bass guitar and his band, Family Dynamic, just released a second album.

Sabrina Biggers '15 was recently promoted to Donor Relations Officer in the advancement department at San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif.

Tyler Fox ’15 and Shelby (LundquistAdams) Fox ’15 were married on August 19, 2016. They live in Eugene, Oregon.

Shelby is working at Ameriprise Financial as an administrative assistant for NCU trustee Gary Jurden. Tyler is employed as a device technician for Oregon Cardiology and has been accepted to the University of Utah dental program.

Isaiah Blake ’15 is the head soccer coach at East Linn Christian School in Lebanon, Oregon.

James Burkin ’15 is a director of clinical education at Southern States Community College. James resides in Fremont, Ohio.

Grace (Bowling) Coburn ’15 and Hans Coburn ’16 were married on August 6, 2016, and are living in Eugene, Oregon.

Rhonda Ettinger ’15 now works as an applied behavior technician at Centria Healthcare. She is working alongside Therapists, individuals, and families to serve people with Autism. Rhonda lives in Junction City, Oregon.

Hannah Frederick ’15 works as a physical therapy aid at Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy and is presently attending Grand Canyon University.

Travis Pacos '15, MBA '16 has moved to San Francisco to step into the role of District Manager (Human Resources and Payroll for Small Businesses) for ADM. Nick Peloquin ’15 is the project manager at MacHub, an organization designed to turn unwanted goods into non-profit funding. Nick resides in Yamhill, Oregon.

Samantha Pitts ’15, MBA ’16 is an accountant assistant with Cascade Health in Eugene, Oregon and is studying for the CPA exams this fall.

Omar Richards ’15 is playing professional basketball in Mexicali, Mexico with Soles de Mexicali.

Kaeli Massetto ’16 is a teacher at Trinity Classical Academy in July 2016. SCV News featured an article about Kaeli, detailing her journey and many past achievements at Northwest Christian University while she accepted her new teaching position in California. Kaeli lives in Saugus, California.

Miles Adkisson ’16 has been an enrollment advisor at Northwest Christian University since December 2015.

Curtis Fields ’16 is working on an M.Div. through Lincoln Christian Seminary.

Just like a cash contribution, a gift of securities provides the donor with an income tax deduction in the year it is given. Many businesses have corporate matching gift programs that can double or even triple a gift to NCU. They are easy to coordinate and are of no cost to the donor. For more information, contact your employer’s human resources department for information about matching gifts.

Planned gifts are a creative opportunity to support NCU. They can offer a significant financial benefit during the donor’s lifetime.

Bequest donors can include NCU in their will by designating a specific dollar amount or percentage of their estate to the University.

InMemoriam IN MEMORIAM Carol Joyce Wahlstrom died Apr. 19, 2016. She was 77 years old. Beloved mother, grandmother, teacher and friend.

Doris Anna Laver, age 92, died Feb. 14, 2016. She was the third daughter in a family of seven. Doris married Alexander Laver on Aug. 16, 1975. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Education from Southern Oregon College and her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northwest Christian College. Doris was an elementary and music teacher for 30 years on Larson Air Force Base, Calif. and in Bend, Ore. Throughout her lifetime, she was a dedicated member of the Christian Church where she served with her musical talent. She is preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and four brothers.

Her surviving family includes her stepson, Robert Laver (Joni) and family, and 16 nieces and nephews.

Marlene (Aydelott) Cooper died in Pullman, Wash. Sept. 26, 2016. She was 80 years old. Marlene attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Ore. for three years. It is there that she met her husband, Lynn Dale Cooper; they married on June 2, 1956 in Olympia, Wash. They had celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary June of 2016. She was a member of the Central Christian Church, active in many communities, and served as an elder at the regional level for the Disciples of Christ denomination.

Marlene is survived by her husband Lynn, son Kevin and his wife, and daughters Kathy and Karen. She is also survived by her sister, brothers, her six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Eleanor “Ellie” (Stiles) Dumdi died on Aug. 4, 2016. She was 84 years old.

Ellie graduated from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. Ellie met Cleve Dumdi in Germany when he was in the military. They married and lived in Germany for five months before they came to Oregon. Ellie and her husband were married for 52 years, raising sons Doug and Mark. Cleve preceded her in death in 2011. She earned a Master’s in Education degree from the University of Oregon and worked at several different schools and was a close friend of Northwest Christian University. Ellie started a Work Experience Program at Junction City High School and had led many other organizations, but is most known for serving 12 years as Lane County Commissioner. She was a strong advocate for rural communities and is

well remembered for her truthfulness and honesty. Ellie is survived by her two sons, two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She had married Gerry Moshofsky on Feb. 23, 2013 and gained a large step-family, leaving behind many relatives and extended family.

Ernest “Ernie” Chamberlain, age 100, died July 12, 2016. He was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Corbett, Ore. and grew up as one of six children. He attended Corbett Christian Church and was baptized at the age of 12.

Ernie married Zella Webb at First Christian Church in Salem, Ore. on Jan. 2, 1937.

He graduated from Northwest Christian College, Eugene, Ore. with bachelor’s degrees in Theology and Oratory in 1938 and earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Butler School of Religion, Indianapolis, Ind. He was ordained Mar. 1936 in Fairmount Church of Christ, Eugene, Ore. He preached at several churches and started the Peninsula Christian Church in Gig Harbor, Wash.

Ernie also served one year as president of the North American Christian Convention and was on the Standard Publishing’s Committee for many years. He and his wife spent more than 70 happy years together and had two daughters, Gloria and Martha. He is survived by six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Leslie Stinnett died on May 24. He was 91 years old. Leslie joined the Navy and served in WWII aboard the destroyer USS Paul Jones from Dec. 1942 until Jan. 1946. He attended the University of Oregon. On May 26, 1984, he married Grace Boone Benn. He and his wife were members of the First Christian Church Roseburg for 23 years and had served as deacon and co-deacon leader. He is survived by Grace, son Dan (Elvira), daughter Linda (John), and stepdaughters Joanie (Jerry), Bobbi (Carl), Diane (Steve) and step-son Skip (Trish).

He is also survived by the mother of his children, Vonnie Jones, cousin Maude, and numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Virginia “Ginny” Rae (Claypool) Busic, age 78, died Oct. 16, 2016. She attended Northwest Christian College and majored in Childhood Education, graduating with her bachelor’s degree and earning her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy degree. Virginia married Richard Busic and served with him in their church for the next 25 years afterward. She

worked as a pre-school teacher for 16 years and was a therapist for 10 years.

She is survived by her husband, Richard, three sons, John, Michael, Jeff, three grandchildren, Chelsey, Johnathan, Brendan, and two great grandchildren.

Her husband is designating Northwest Christian University and First Christian Church in Eugene, Ore. as institutes to accept donations in memory of Virginia.

Charles “Chuck” William Merrill, age 76, died Aug. 16, 2016. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University. Charles met his wife, Kay Feldman, when they were both in second grade; they married years later in 1962.

He then earned his Master of Science degree at Cornell University and worked as a professor at the State University of New York at Cobleskill, NY. Charles was a lifelong member of the church, serving as treasurer, financial instructor and elder at Murray Hills Christian Church. He and his wife, Kay, have been stewards of the Merrill Family Foundation and have been generous donors to Northwest Christian University for many years. In addition, Kay served as an NCU trustee from 2001 - 2009. Charles is survived by his wife, daughter, Lisa, son, Tony, and four grandchildren: Benjamin, Molly, Nathan, and Corinne.

Michael Leon Kogutkiewicz died Sep. 26, 2016. He was 68 years old. On Nov. 23, 1991, Mike married Nancy Knudsen and they adopted their two daughters, Natalie and Lauren, from China. Their older daughter, Natalie ‘17, is a senior at Northwest Christian University and their younger daughter, Lauren ‘20, is a freshmen who is also in attendance. Mike and Nancy have been benevolent donors to NCU for over 20 years.

Frances L. Dornhecker, age 88, died July 30, 2016 in Dallas, Ore. She graduated from Yakima High School in 1944, and then attended Northwest Christian College. Frances served as the Music Director for the First Christian Church.

It is there that she met Bob Dornhecker and they married Oct. 12, 1947. She later attended Oregon College of Education and graduated in 1959 and taught at Rickreall School, Perrydale, West Stayton, and Woodmere School. Bob preceded her in death in 2014. Frances is survived by her daughter Sylvia (Bill), her son, Doug (Kathy), and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
