PRESIDENT’S LETTER This Beacon Brief is a celebration of God’s provision during a challenging year. Bushnell presses forward through the hard work of responsible students, devoted faculty, skilled staff, and a host of generous alumni and friends. I am thankful for each member of the Bushnell community as they have kept focused on a faithful mission in gratitude to a faithful Lord. We have remained open and in-person this entire school year. Our on-campus community has pledged to keep each other healthy and safe, making the Covid-19 cases few. While our student athletes and musicians have been restricted by protocols we’re now able to hold more in-person events so their gifts can be on display. And, through it all, chapel has been meaningful and service opportunities creative and timely. Financially, our losses in revenue due to the pandemic have been largely offset by the giving of alumni and friends, the shrewd creativity of our staff, and some helpful government relief. We received a number of estate gifts that remind us that our devoted friends had the University in mind long before the virus hit. Please know that your giving, whether to the Beacon Fund, special projects, or to the endowment is important and dearly appreciated. We are looking forward to in-person commencement ceremonies on May 8th – one for undergraduate and one for online and graduate students. We will host the annual Evening of Tribute on May 6th, honoring exemplary citizens and inviting more partnerships. In the next Beacon magazine, we will introduce a renewed vision for our future that is hopeful, aggressive, and we believe faithful to a growing future. For now, let me say thank you for remembering Bushnell in your prayers and financial giving. You make the Bushnell experience accessible to our dedicated students as we strive forward in our mission of wisdom, faith and service. Blessings,

The Impact of Your Gifts to Bushnell University in 2020

n September 7th, 2020, Kathryn Carson was sleeping peacefully until she heard thunder. It sounded close and unnatural. The light was strange and the wind was fierce. From her back porch she looked outside and saw a wall of fire. It was not thunder that woke her. It was the explosion of fire igniting. The Holiday Farm Fire began on the property next to Kathryn’s rental home in Blue River. Kathryn, a student at Bushnell and a nurse at Riverbend, grabbed her textbooks, scrubs, and little else before fleeing.

avanna Bateman, a newlywed and education major at Bushnell University, had spent the last year commuting between Eugene and her husband’s family ranch in Southern Oregon. After a long Labor Day weekend, Savanna decided to stay the week on the ranch as the pandemic had forced her classes and student teaching online. Like Katelyn, Savanna’s encounter with not just one but two fires began with the sound of thunder. This time, it was the explosion from the Almeda Drive Fire.

“It is a really emotional thing… but even during all the loss, God has blessed our family.” Though the family could not see it, they could hear it and believe that sparks raining from this fire began the first blaze in their hay field. Savanna’s family was trapped in Eagle Point while she and her in-laws evacuated the ranch with little besides each other and the dogs. The ranch, as well as Savanna’s parents, escaped, but the

The fire was only 300 yards away when she left. Like other evacuees, Kathryn spent the next three weeks living in a hotel. In the wake of family loss, this was a compound tragedy.

“It was scary. I am so appreciative of the support from Bushnell. During a trauma, you need family. we have good friends, but needed family..." Kathryn’s Beacon family immediately stepped in. Only a few days after the fire, Kathryn’s admissions counselor, Carrie Gillies, came to her hotel bearing a gift basket of essential supplies, prayer, and a check enabled by the generous donors to the emergency

A call from her husband led to another emergency evacuation, and this time the fire took everything. “It is a really emotional thing… but even during all the loss, God has blessed our family.” Savanna’s steadfast faith is a beacon of hope in the most dire of circumstances. “We never thought this could happen to us. But God has provided for us and blessed more than we could have imagined.” A family friend and police officer was able to show the family the scene before they would return weeks later. This helped soften the blow, but it

Only two weeks into her new nursing position on the mother-baby unit at Riverbend, Kathryn was able to take a few weeks off to recover and relocate to Eugene. Kathryn is “forever grateful for the emotional support” as well, and while the experience has left a “scar on the heart” she is moving forward, settling into her new home, and will complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing very soon.

The Beacon Relief Fund helped us buy clothes, shoes, a bed, and things you need to go through the day. It even helped us go to dinner to try to take our minds off it all.” Savanna and her husband, along with her in-laws, are living on the property in trailers. “Life is coming back, the grass is growing, and spring is helping.” It is this spirit of hope that will allow Savanna to shine as she completes her degree at Bushnell University and steps into the classroom, hopefully in her hometown of Eagle Point, as a high school teacher.

It is this spirit of hope, exemplified in Savanna and other Beacons, that your gifts sustain.

WHY I GIVE

rowing up, my family always depended on help from my grandparents or places like the food bank to make ends meet. Raising my children as a single mother, I too had to depend on family, cash assistance, food stamps, and other organizations that assist families in poverty. There have been times that my children and I have gone without dinner because I did not have any money to buy food. As I have gotten older, found better jobs, and furthered my education, I have always wished for a way that I could give somehow: donate to the food bank, or the church, or to someone else in need. But in my mind, I felt that I could not because I did not have enough money. Earning a bachelor’s degree was never something I thought I could do and there were many occasions during my time as a student that I was convinced I would never be able to finish. My advisor, Bethany Dilla, was a big part of my motivation to keep going. She would contact me regularly to check in on my classes and home life, send me greeting cards, and encourage me by reminding me how many weeks were left until I crossed the finish line. It was a one-credit Bible class at Bushnell that truly changed my life. During that course, my faith grew immensely, and I rededicated my life to Christ. A few months after graduation, I felt strongly that I should give back to Bushnell for how my life changed by attending a Christian college. After my first donation, I realized it could be part of my tithe – to give money to God on purpose. Every time I make my planned donation to my alma mater, I think, “Maybe I am helping someone else to afford an education at a Christian college, and maybe their faith, and their life, will be changed just like mine.” Erin Patterson '19, Business

iving during COVID, for us, wasn’t much different than any other giving. We believe our circumstances, difficult or otherwise, should not define our faithfulness. Christ gave at the moment of His greatest need – to those on the cross beside him. Giving is based on seeing the need in front of us and listening to our hearts. We participate in the mission of Bushnell because the are a faithful steward to each individual associated with the University. Bushnell cares for and listens to students, donors, staff, and faculty with integrity and courage. They have responded to this challenging year by taking care of one another and by their steadfast commitment to preparing students to serve the world in all the different ways God calls them. As a Trustee, I (Pat) have had the opportunity to watch Bushnell University from the inside-out and I believe with my whole heart that God is honored there. I know that my financial gifts to the school, however small or large, help to both sustain the ongoing operation as well as meet tangible, timely needs of the students who are served so faithfully.   Trustee Pat and husband Dick Turanski, GloryBee Foods

ushnell University made a significant impact on my life. Not only did I receive a great education, but I was provided with amazing mentors, established professional connections that led to my first job, and will never forget the life-long friendships formed. Even as an accounting major, I was taught to see my profession through a lens of faith and learned to integrate it into my practice. I began making monthly gifts as a Torchbearer to Bushnell soon after I graduated just two years ago. I know how hard it can be to make ends meet during college, so I want to give back and help other students achieve their goal of a Bushnell education. I am only giving a small amount now, but I look forward to being able to give more in the future. I've learned that giving is a matter of habit – you can start small and still make a real impact on the lives of current students right now. There are always excuses to not give, but it's about priorities for me. My Bushnell experience will benefit me the rest of my life, so it's a huge priority for me to give back so others can have the same opportunity.   Jessica Garner '19, Accounting
