Empowering Progress: A Reflective Journey and Visionary Path Ahead Calvary greetings to you all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It has been a journey of great success and testimony so far. I’d like to start by expressing my gratitude to the great students of Babcock University for placing their faith in me to serve in this capacity. It’s an experience that has changed my perspective on life and offered me the opportunity to be a leader among men. My deepest gratitude also goes to the school administration for their support and continuous dedication to the welfare of the students. Finally, I have no words to describe the privilege I have had to work with this set of BUSA officials, from the distinguished senators to the honorable executives who have worked day and night to ensure that the goals of the association are met. I had a vision of bringing back BUSA to the level of the students and ensuring that the association stays true to its founding ideals of student representation. That’s why I decided that all BUSA events should be free for all interested students during my time and that BUSA, in itself, is more respected by the school. I had the vision of increasing the standards of the association and ensuring that our resources go into more important things. It has been a steady work in progress, and I thank God Almighty for His grace. The semester was filled with many challenges from the very first day of resumption when we encountered hall problems to the later parts of the semester when we faced instability in the light and water areas. However, I

can assure everyone that BUSA, as a body, fought collectively to resolve these issues, and we made sure that the school offices responsible for these areas did not rest until the issues were resolved. Many of these issues are still a work in progress, I must say, and BUSA pledges to continue ensuring that the welfare of the students is the primary goal of the administration. We brought back the BUSA congress after many years, and I must admit to witnessing mixed feelings from the students. Primarily because many of them wanted the VOL 1 ISSUE 1 BUSA BUZZ 23/24 PAGE 1

opportunity to speak with the school administrators personally. Although this wasn’t the case for many, some did get the chance for private discussions after the congress. I want to apologize to the students for that mistake; many things did not go as planned on that day, mainly because of time constraints and also because some school officials did not offer answers to the questions that were asked directly. After the congress, I made sure to communicate back to the school administration in areas of that program which we did not find pleasant to us, particularly on why

Okechukwu-Adama Chibueze Justice Executive President students were not given the opportunity to speak. After that, we had a series of meetings on resolving this so that subsequent administrations would not make the same mistakes we made. The congress did not go totally as planned, but my happiness is that it is a step forward towards achieving my goal of accountability between the students and the school administration. However, this goal of mine is a long-term one that I pray the new administration by July would buy into as well.

Moving forward to the year, my plans are to solidify BUSA’s standards with the school and focus more on infrastructure for long-term benefits. This includes the construction of the abyss house extension to decongest the BUSA house and make the house more conducive for students, also as a waiting area which I would be staying back in school this holiday to complete, the ongoing renovation of the Iperu tennis court, the construction of the BUSA conference room, the renovation of TCCDR service, and many more.

The students this year showed a tremendous amount of strength and unity. I cannot count how many obstacles I have seen the students face this year and how we were all able to overcome so many of them. We turned up for our own on multiple occasions, including the eleven (11) million naira we raised for the heart surgery of one of our own. Something I consider the highlight of the year and my administration.

All of this would not be possible without God’s grace and your support. I plead with everyone to continue to show us the support that we so desperately need, and I also pray that together we would have the campus life that we desire. I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Remain blessed.

REDEFINING LEADERSHIP: ABIDING A CULTURE OF SERVITUDE Calvary greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. What a precious first semester it has been for the 2023/2024 BUSA administration. The entire team has had to navigate through several moments that tested our will, and it was by God’s grace alone that we were able to triumph. As the Senate President of the Babcock University Students’ Association (BUSA), I am honored to share the reflections and successes of a challenging yet rewarding first semester. From the beginning was our responsibility, to ensure that the imbibe in themselves of servitude over selfthey were made to were inevitable and to embrace them with steadfast commitment through.

of the administration, it as the presiding council, members of the Senate arm the true leadership mindset centeredness. In the process, understand that challenges that they should be willing the burning belief that a to service would guide them

Our administration rooted in the belief about authority and responsibility to serve while interacting level. This is why, in the general interest before our convenience. the cafeteria, ushering awareness for a cause students were always

adopted a philosophy that leadership is not power, but rather, a solemn and uplift the student body with them on a horizontal performing all our duties, of students was put first Whether it was serving at during events, or raising that we believe in, the put first.

The diverse nature of our student community demanded a comprehensive and inclusive approach. Recognizing this, the senators of each hostel facilitated the weekly hall assembly with the hall admins and, on several occasions, went around each room to gather room complaints, which were then brought to the attention of the school authorities. Through this room check process, several repairs and replacements were made to damaged facilities in the halls of residence. After successfully conducting the by-elections in September to fill the gaps in our administration, the Senate arm went full swing in reviewing budgets proposed by the executive arm. Furthermore, budgets for projects in each of the halls of residence were composed by senators with the insight of hall admins of each hall. These budgets were VOL 1 ISSUE 1 BUSA BUZZ 23/24 PAGE 3

proposed to the entire Senate house, where the senators defended their proposed projects that will be executed in the halls next semester. As we reflect on the accomplishments of the first semester, it is crucial to acknowledge the collective effort of the entire BUSA team. From the esteemed executives to the exceptional senators, and every student who contributed their time and ideas, our success is a testament to the strength of unity and collaboration. In redefining leadership, we have learned that humility and a heart of servitude are paramount. True leaders are those who prioritize the common good and inspire positive change. Through BUSA, our journey has only just begun, and we are excited about the opportunities and challenges that the future of this administration holds. As the second semester approaches, we will remain devoted to the goals of service, unity, and excellence. It is my prayer that we may continue to overcome problems, appreciate wins, and leave behind a legacy of leadership that truly adheres to an ideology of servitude by continuing to work together as a goal-driven association. I wish you all a happy new year.

EMPOWERING EXCELLENCE: Transforming Narratives, Igniting Success These banks were vetted by seasoned judges to ensure the standard of questions to be asked and words to be spelled were suitable for a competition of this magnitude. We kicked off with the group stage; each group produced one winner after intense competition between the departments in that group. The final of each competition consisted of four departments (those are the departments that came out on top in the four groups), and trust me, these departments came out with their guns blazing. In the end, a winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up emerged.

Not much is known about the academic committee of the Babcock University Student Association; maybe the narrative is changing. We set the ball rolling with a seminar for BUSA officials to provide insight into how they can manage their work as BUSA officials along with their academic responsibilities as students. The seminar featured some BUSA officials from the past administration who shared their wealth of experience for others to gain insights. This semester, for the first time ever, BUSA held an inter-departmental Spelling Bee and quiz competition within a two-week span. Let’s give you a rundown of how it went. For those familiar with Champions League football (pardon us if you aren’t), we used a group format. The competition featured four groups, each comprising seven departments, bringing the total number of departments to 28. After dividing the departments, we set about creating word banks and question banks respectively for the Spelling Bee and quiz competition. VOL 1 ISSUE 1 BUSA BUZZ 23/24 PAGE 5

For the quiz, the departments that came out on top are as follows: 1. Microbiology - First position 2. Anatomy - Second position 3. BUTC - Third position

For the Spelling Bee, the victorious departments are: 1. Medicine and Surgery - First position 2. Basic Science - Second Position 3. Law and Security Studies - Third position Furthermore, the academic committee, through the initiative of the Vice Presidents, commenced a campaign on campus against examination malpractice. This was carried out during hall worship at the halls of residence. The entire essence of this was to educate students more on what can constitute exam malpractice and how to avoid such things. Lastly, we succeeded in implementing a new format for writing GEDs exams. This enabled a smooth process for students taking those courses. This semester was quite eventful for the committee, and we look forward to more exciting things we have in store for the student body next semester.

DIRECTORATE O AND VENTURE Damulak Emmanuel

Director of Transport and Ventures, Main Campus

REPAINTING OF BUSA TRICYCLES Following the conclusion of the previous BUSA Election, the Director of Transport and Ventures for the main campus (Damulak Emmanuel Mustapha) and Iperu campus (Bossman Oreoluwa Deborah) convened to discuss ways to make students’ lives easier. The issue of tricycle identification on the main campus was raised, considering other bodies owning tricycles, similar to BUSA. The varying prices among these bodies and the allegations of extortion by students added urgency to the matter. The proposed solution was to establish a unified color for all tricycles under the Directorate of Transport and Ventures. Since five out of the existing ten were already blue, the remaining five, initially yellow, were to be repainted blue, as no other tricycle-owning body on campus used the color blue. This decision also acknowledged the inevitable increase in tricycle ride prices due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the

significant rise in fuel prices. In anticipation of potential extortion allegations, BUSA decided to increase its prices moderately, ensuring a balance that considers the welfare of the students they serve. PURCHASE OF NEW TRICYCLE TYRES Another challenge faced by our Directorate, guided by our predecessors, was the issue of tricycle tires. The previous tires were unsuitable for campus use, with some tricycles having worn-out tires. In response, our Directorate undertook a mission to find the safest and most suitable tires for campus use. We sought tires specifically designed for the two rear tricycle wheels, essential for drivers to maximize ride safety. These tires, known as caterpillar tires, have proven effective since their purchase. They provide improved stability and traction, enhancing tricycle capabilities on uneven or slippery roads, especially during rainy weather. Additionally, the tires distribute the tricycle’s weight more evenly, improving overall maneuverability.

REPAINTING OF IPERU BUSA HOUSE As a former member of the past administration and a law student, residing in Iperu campus during sessions, the Director of Transport and Ventures for Iperu campus identified the need to repaint the BUSA house in Iperu. The current state did not meet the required standards expected of our association. It is believed that exposure to weather elements over time caused the paint on the Iperu BUSA house to fade or deteriorate. Repainting the house is essential to restore and enhance its aesthetic appeal.

Building Bonds, Creating Memories: A Day of Fun at Andrews Park As social workers committed to enhancing community connections and well-being, our team, alongside executives, orchestrated a truly memorable picnic at Andrews Park on November 26th. The event seamlessly blended laughter, camaraderie, and the creative spirit of content creation, providing students with a day to remember. Among the numerous highlights was the diverse array of board games sprawled across picnic blankets. From timeless classics to modern favorites, the games served as a catalyst for shared joy and friendly competition, fostering unity among the attendees. Adding an extra layer of excitement was a captivating scavenger hunt, made possible through a thrilling partnership with a clothing brand. This collaboration not only infused an element of suspense into the day but also inspired participants to document their journey through creative content creation. The result was a vibrant collection of photos, videos, and stories, showcasing the unique perspectives and talents of our diverse student body. Four lucky winners emerged from the scavenger hunt, their creative contributions earning them well-deserved prizes. The collaboration with the unnamed brand not only added an element of excitement to the event but also highlighted the power of partnerships in creating memorable experiences. The picnic area itself was transformed into a festive space with thoughtfully curated decorations, creating an atmosphere of celebration. A scrumptious spread awaited the attendees, featuring a delightful cake, succulent chicken, refreshing drinks, and an array of delectable treats. The picnic not only satisfied culinary cravings but also served as a backdrop for impromptu content creation, with students capturing and sharing moments of joy and connection.

Biochemistry Unleashed: From Classrooms to Entrepreneurs Step into a world where biochemistry transcends textbooks and ventures into entrepreneurship. The final year students of the Biochemistry Department didn’t just take an exam; they became creators, crafting brands and products from scratch. These products not only addressed societal problems but also showcased the practical applications of biochemistry. The diverse array of creations unveiled during their exhibition held on the 18th of December, 2023 demonstrated the students’ ability to innovate beyond the confines of traditional academia. As each student group evolved into a unique brand, their products became tangible solutions to real-world issues, proving that biochemistry isn’t confined to laboratories and textbooks. One standout brand that stole the spotlight was “Rejuvenate.” With a philosophy rooted in the transformative power of scent, they presented a collection of exquisitely scented candles, enchanting sachets, and invigorating shower steamers. Their products aimed not only to captivate the senses but also to create memorable experiences. “Puralav” took a different yet equally impactful approach, specializing in lavender-infused hair products. Their slogan, “Purity in Every Strand,” echoed through their lavender-infused shampoo, conditioner, and hair growth oil. Beyond hair care, they showcased the purity and natural beauty that biochemistry could bring to everyday products. “Aloessentials” carved its niche with aloe vera-infused products, presenting a travel kit featuring hand sanitizer, hair cream, body wash, and moisturizer. This brand seamlessly merged convenience with wellness, highlighting VOL 1 ISSUE 1 BUSA BUZZ 23/24 PAGE 21

This powerful snapshot of togetherness serves as a tangible reminder of the bonds forged during this special day. As social workers, our mission extends beyond incorporating elements of content creation into events like these, underscoring the importance of adapting to the evolving ways people connect and express themselves. The success of this picnic at Andrews Park reflects our commitment to fostering resilient communities through innovative and inclusive approaches. We eagerly anticipate organizing more events that seamlessly blend entertainment, creativity, and community building. By combining social work values with contemporary forms of expression, we aim to create lasting memories and strengthen the fabric of our community for years to come. God’s Gift to Babcock Dunamis started as your average church drama group with just five members. However, with unwavering passion, brimming creativity, and unyielding love for God, Dunamis has, by the grace of God, grown into an established Christian entertainment group with over 50 members, having produced over 10 original plays. Among the popular ones are “The King’s Choice” and “Rise,” among others. Much can be said about Dunamis. As one of, if not the leading Christian entertainment group in Babcock University, Dunamis has been fulfilling its mandate of ministering God’s word through world-class entertainment since its inception on May 30th, 2021. This semester, by God’s grace, Dunamis came packed with many ministrations. After starting the semester with prayer and fasting, Dunamis presented a play titled “Law of Contract,” which featured characters that had people talking for days. Subsequently, there was a collaboration with BUSA, creatively using drama to orientate newly accepted freshers on the customs and way of life in Babcock University. The journey continued as Dunamis, aiming to pioneer, make an impact, and establish a proper drama group in New Creation Chapel, partnered with them to minister the first drama in their church titled “Faith in Furnace,” which blessed many lives. Finally, Dunamis, in collaboration with Bethel Chapel drama group, capped up the semester by presenting an outstanding stage play titled “Addiction,” which, by God’s grace, brought people into repentance. God has been faithful to Dunamis so far, and we trust that God will use Dunamis to make a more significant impact and bless lives in the coming semester. Written by, Esther Olaleye
