GRANTSBURG–There is a room at the Grantsburg High School called the closet. It was started to help kinds in need and help aid kids that may not have necessities. Some of the items they are looking

for are essentials like soap, shampoo, clothes and even non-perishable food items. The idea for the closet came to the school from a group of women at the Methodist Church. “They came to us with the idea,” said closet organizer Suzy Retzer. “We, at the high school, thought it was a great idea.”

Retzer told the Sentinel what the idea behind the closet is. “Students can go into the closet and pick out things they need and then leave with no one knowing they need these items,” Retzer said. “This community rallies around our students SEE CLOSET, PAGE 6

County looks to expand donation program JONATHAN RICHIE SENTINEL EDITOR

GOVERNMENT CENTER–– With deer season right around the corner the Land and Water Conservation department is looking to expand their deer donation program. The program is designed so that hunters can drop off deer

at a local processor and then the meat is donated to local food shelfs. “The local food shelves are very appreciative of these donations,” County Conservationist Dave Ferris told the Natural Resources committee members last week. “They like having that fresh ground venison on the shelves.”

MEENON––One man is dead following a one vehicle crash near the intersection of State Highway 70 and Clam Lake Drive in the Town of Meenon early Sunday morning, according to the Burnett County Sheriff's Office. Matthew Matrious, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene and two juveniles were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities arrived on the scene at 5:43 a.m. on September 15. "Initially, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash," a release from the sheriff's office said. The Sheriff's office believes the vehicle was stolen and may have been involved in a Barron County burglary. The investigation is ongoing with the sheriff’s office. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation cleared the scene after about two hours. The Burnett County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, St. Croix Tribal Police Department, North Memorial Ambulance, Siren Fire Department, Burnett County Highway Department and the Burnett County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Deer season will be upon us soon. There is a program in through the county that will allow hunters to donate deer so the meat can be given to local food pantries.

Ferris explained last year the programs only processor was Lock & Load, located on E. River Road south of Grantsburg. He is trying to get Block & Cleaver in Siren to join the program, so it can expand and not just have a single processor. SEE DEER, PAGE 6
