A severe thunderstorm came through the area on Friday evening around 5 p.m.

The storm brought in winds over 80 mph, hail, heavy rainfall and damage to buildings.

A majority of the storm damage was reported in Polk County. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Saturday providing an update on the storm.

“Communities included in the path of this were Cushing, Frederic, Luck, Milltown, Centuria, Balsam Lake, Clayton and Turtle Lake. Our county sustained damage to buildings, power lines, property and trees. Flash flooding occurred. Presently there are approximately 6,925 residents of Polk County without power according to utility providers.”

According to Polk-Burnett Electric Cooperative on Monday morning, they were reporting over 2,000 Polk County residents were without power. There were 170 without power in Barron County and just six customers in Burnett County still without power.

Saturday morning, Polk County Chairman Dean Johansen signed a Disaster Declaration for Polk County.

Main Street construction to begin July 29 JONATHAN RICHIE SENTINEL EDITOR

GRANTSBURG––The Village of Grantsburg has released a tentative timeline for the reconstruction of Main Street. Work will begin July 29 by putting in a new water main extension.

The Village was awarded a Community Development Block Grant for Public Facilities (CDBG-PF.) The 50/50 grant will be used to fund several projects to re-invigorate downtown Grantsburg and Madison Avenue. The

CDBG-PF is a program sponsored by the Federal government and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with the money being dispersed by the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

The project is estimated to cost $760,000, Grantsburg has been awarded $380,000 and the other half will come from the village and may include in-kind donations.

The project was split into two parts – east and west of Madison Avenue.

tended on starting the project in late May or early June and begin the second half after Watercross.

Crews from WE Energies were in town on Monday replacing gas mains and services. They will have started at the intersection of Brad Street and Madison Avenue and then went to the intersection of Oak Street and Madison Avenue.

“This declaration will allow Polk County Emergency Management to seek disaster funding if recovery costs exceed established thresholds.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s office also said there were a number of fires reported along with sparking power lines. There were no major injuries reported by the office.

There was a power outage in the Siren area for about 90 minutes on Friday evening.

NWE and Polk Burnett Electric Cooperative was updating their Facebook page over the weekend and were providing information for members.

Polk-Burnett was also giving information on how to stay safe after the storm.

Including stay away from downed power lines, if using a generator be sure to use a transfer switch to keep electricity from back feeding into system and check meters for damage.

“If all goes well, power should be restored (Monday) to many members in Balsam Lake, Bone Lake and Half Moon Lake areas,” Polk-Burnett said in a statement released Monday. “Likely by the end of the week before all repairs are made, especially on the east side of the system in and around Barron County.”

Lost bike in Siren A children’s bike was found at Crooked Lake Park in Siren.

The bike is a gray girl’s bike and is currently at the Siren Police Department.

Siren Chief of Police Chris Sybers said the bike was left at Crooked Lake Park on the evening of July 12.

It is not entirely uncommon for Siren Police Department to house lost bikes. Sybers told the Sentinel the department usually finds about 15 deserted bikes a year.

Dump truck stolen near Hwy. 70 recovered in St. Paul STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM

A dump truck stolen from a construction site near Highway 70 in Pine County has been recovered in Saint Paul.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reports that on the evening on July 15, Pine County deputies responded to a report of a vehicle prowl at the Shafeer Contracting construction site office and storage area near Highway 70 and Interstate 35. A Shafer employee told deputies that one of the dump trucks had been moved and that a person or persons had rummaged through other tools and equipment at the site.

On the morning of July 16, another Shafer employee realized that a 2005 Sterling dump truck was missing from the site. A witness advised that the truck was seen leaving at approximately 8:30 p.m. and heading westbound on Highway 70.

The dump truck was described as having a red cab, yellow/orange dump box with dried cement possibly stuck on the rear of the box, and the Shafer Contracting logo on the cab doors.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported that the truck was recovered in St. Paul on July 17 but did not state whether or not arrests had been made in connection with the case.

‘Burnett County is still key for Wisconsin tourism’ JONATHAN RICHIE SENTINEL EDITOR

That is how Julie Fox explained it to the Board of Supervisors. She gave the annual report on tourism for the entire county for last year.

In 2018 tourism in Burnett County went up after a difficult year in 2017. According to the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, there was a total of over $38 million impact on the Burnett County economy – a 5% increase from 2017.

Fox is the Northwest Regional Tourism Specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

She heads the 18 counties in Northwest Wisconsin, where a majority of the tourism is linked to

outdoor recreation.

“Tourism plays a vital role in

“Tourism in Burnett County supports 373 jobs with a personal income of $7.3 million supported by visitors to the county.”

Travel Wisconsin states that in 2018 a total of $21.6 billion was earned in total business sales from tourism across the state. There was $13.3 billion in spending linked to tourism. The State had approximately 112 million visitors last year.

Fox concluded her presentation with a brief statement on Burnett County’s tourism efforts.

“Burnett County is rocking it.”

MAIN STREET: Construction scheduled to be completed by mid-October CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Ave. It will affect E. Madison Avenue 100 feet east of Pine Street and between Madison Avenue and Olson Drive on N. Pine Street.

Crews are expected to be done with stage one by July 31. When the water main extension is finished the areas of the road under construction will remain gravel.

The second stage of the project will also be starting on July 29, it will focus on the east portion of Madison Avenue. Blacktop, curb and gutter, and sidewalk will be removed from Pine Street to Robert Street.

Later next week the storm sewer work will be done.

Then the week of August 2 the east section of Madison Avenue will be graded.

The following week the electrical conduit and new street light bases will be going in. Starting on August

14 curb and gutter work will begin and there will be a period of five to seven days when curb cannot be driven on. After the curb and gutter work is done crews will begin pouring the sidewalk on August 16, again it will take five to seven days before it can be driven on.

Asphalt binder will be applied to the east section of Madison Ave beginning on August 23 and one of two layers of blacktop will be applied at that time as well.

Street lights will be removed in the first week of stage one of the project on E. Madison Avenue from Pine Street to Robert Street.

Grantsburg public works director, Chris Bartlett said the village is hoping the electrician can keep power to street lights on W. Madison Avenue while the east portion of the street is being worked on.

There will also be three temporary lights set up on E. Madison Avenue.

Bartlett, said that crews are planning on working

only during the week at the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m.

The second half of the project will deal with the western half of Madison. The plan is for it to begin on August 28.

It will follow a similar structure of removal of blacktop, sidewalk, curb and gutter. Then storm sewer work, grading of the street, electrical work and then conclude with asphalt work.

The final stage of the project will be the final paving of Madison Avenue from Olson Drive to Robert Street.

The plan is for work to be completed by October 8.

“I call this the tentative schedule because the weather can affect the project timeline,” Bartlett said.

“Also, unforeseen issues can come up that may cause the timeline to be altered.”

‘Somewhere between a snake, a mongoose… and a panther’

That is how one of the greatest characters in television history describes his speed to his coworkers.

His name is Dwight Shrute from the office and he is hilarious.

“I am fast. To give you a reference point I am somewhere between a snake and a mongoose… and a panther,” Shrute told his coworkers.

Dwight Shrute is a top ten television character of all time. He is a beet farmer and paper salesman in Scranton, Penn.

There will be a global day of mourning sometime in 2021. I say Sentinel this not because I see myself as some sort of Nostradamus-type Editor seer. No, I know this because NetJonathan Richie flix will be losing the hit show The Office some day on that calendar.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly suggest watching seasons two through seven.

NBC announced a couple of weeks ago that they will begin pulling their content from Netflix and other streaming services in the coming year. It is how network television is attempting to compete with the streaming giants.

They take away their content and then say something to the effect of “na na na boo boo. I’m taking my hit TV series home.”

They did not give a date, but it will eventually be gone.

On that dreaded day, people (mostly young people – millennials) all over the world will no longer have access to the nine seasons (although season eight is trash, also what the heck were they doing with Andy at the end of the series?) of joyous mockumentary footage of a paper company operating out of Scranton, PA. Michael Scott – the lovable idiot of a boss along with his staff of Jim, Dwight, Pam, Angela, Oscar, Phyllis, Stanley and the rest of the gang will only be available for streaming through an unnamed NBC streaming platform.

Similar to what Disney will be doing later this year with their service with all their popular films including those produced and released by Pixar.

However, I found a loophole in the system without having to bow down to whatever streaming services is holding my favorite TV show hostage for $9.99 a month. That loophole is called the DVD. I own all nine seasons of my beloved show. Therefore, I will be able to relive all of Kevin Malone’s best one-liners and relatable fat guy moments.

That being said, I know the DVD will eventually be obsolete just like the VHS. Do you remember VHS and the VCR? The joy of rewinding. That sound the machine made as you waited two-five minutes for the tape to be reset.

I have a small collection of VHS and I have no idea what I’m going to do with them. Someone told me they are like vinyl records, which was obviously a lie to make me feel better.

Why we can’t sleep

W

e are navigating our way through deep summer, a time to enjoy the beauty and abundance of nature and generally try to slow down our self-imposed need to rush and obsess about things that are out of direct control.

I have been thinking about this a great deal lately and I appreciate this opportunity to talk with you about this, gentle reader.

I’ve come to the conclusion that our lives are far too easy and we somehow have a need for struggle hard wired into our genetic makeup.

When I grew up in the 1960s and 70s, my father worked full time, five and a half days a week. My mother did not work outside the home for From the Publisher’s much of my childhood. Mom may not have earned a paycheck, but she put Desk in a full day, every day.

She made three meals a day, did Tom Stangl laundry with a wringer washer, cleaned the house and paid attention to our petty squabbles. For those of you who never had the pleasure of doing laundry with a wringer washer, it was a true physical workout.

The machine needed to be filled up with a water hose, drained by another hose and the clothing passed through a wringer to get the excess water removed.

The clothes then went into a rinse tub to remove soap and were passed through the wringer again before being hung on a clothesline to dry.

Mom did her work efficiently to find time to read part of a novel and catch part of her soap opera on television before getting lunch and supper ready. No microwaves, no fast food, just a plain meal with meat, potatoes and a vegetable. Oh, and she made cookies and cakes for dessert as well.

My dad, (aka The Chief) worked very hard as an automotive mechanic. He devoured his lunch so he could take a cat nap before returning to work.

As hard as many parents’ lives were, they were a breeze compared to their childhoods. Technology and consumerism have promised improved quality of life for every successive generation, but I wonder if we are using that energy in a positive way.

I know the good old days weren’t as good as we like to recall but it seems to me that even though life was a struggle, there was a sense of a noble exhaustion at the end of the day. My parents knew that they had done their jobs providing shelter and food for their families and could feel proud about the manner in which it was accomplished.

It is rare today that there is an adult who doesn’t work outside the home. We use many prepackaged and processed foods and there are many communities where you can get a hot meal 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

No more need to struggle with meals. Laundry is done by efficient machines. What used to take my mother hours to do can be done with very little human intervention in the same or less amount of time.

Instead of having the noble exhaustion, we have insomnia. Instead of meaningful interaction with people, we snipe and pick at persons we don’t even know through the thin air.

Something needs to change. We need to find a way to have noble exhaustion again.

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin urges trump administration to invest in dairy innovation with trade aid “We need to do better for Wisconsin farmers who have been caught in the middle of this trade war” WASHINGTON, D.C.–– As Wisconsin farmers continue to face enormous challenges from retaliatory tariffs caused by the trade wars, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is urging the Trump administration to prioritize investments in dairy innovation and market development so farmers and dairy businesses can build brighter futures.

In a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue, Senator Baldwin asks the administration Tammy to direct at least $60 milBaldwin lion in trade aid to USDA’s Dairy Business InnovaU.S. Senator tion Initiatives, which were created by Baldwin in the 2018 Farm Bill with the support of a wide range of dairy stakeholders and bipartisan lawmakers.

In her letter, Senator Baldwin writes, “As you allocate trade aid in response to the enormous challenges our farmers are facing from retaliatory tariffs, I urge you to include funding for market development that targets innovation in dairy products.

She continues, “Wisconsin—America’s Dairyland—has lost over 1,600 dairy farms in the last two years, and forward-looking strategies to increase the value and utilization of milk cannot come fast enough. We know it’s going to take a range of steps to help dairy farmers get back on their feet— and we’ve made progress together in getting the Dairy Margin Coverage program signed into law and then made available to farmers, as well as refunding premiums

that dairy farmers paid into the old dairy Margin Protection Program when it wasn’t working as promised.

Baldwin concludes, “Despite the challenges facing the dairy industry right now, including the loss of many of our family farms and the strong headwinds the industry faces from trade wars and low prices, I know that the men and women who lead dairy farms and dairy organizations are second to none in their expertise, tenacity, and commitment to improving their industry. Quite simply, there could not be a finer group of people to lead dairy through this difficult time.

I urge you to prioritize investing in these rural leaders with trade aid funding of at least $60 million to promote dairy market development.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ATVs in ATV i Webb W bb Lake L k Dear Editor, When you encounter ATVs on public roads in Webb Lake, Wisconsin use extreme caution. The odds are very high the drivers are drunk.

For nearly 100 years Webb Lake successfully promoted itself to the outside world as a paradise of peaceful lakes and forests. Our spectacular hunting and fishing built a destination. In 2009 that all changed... that’s when criminal behavior became our new driver of economic development.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I met a large group of ATVs on County Road H in Webb Lake. All were traveling illegally at high speed with cases of beer strapped onto several machines. One driver was demonstrating his skill by driving on the two left side wheels at 50+ mph as he passed us. This sort of thing is now commonplace in Webb Lake, especially on weekends. The Town of Webb Lake celebrates and promotes the public road sport of drunken ATV driving and bizarre behavior for the benefit of a few tavern owners and their best customers... alcoholics and drugged crazies. Many, if not most of whom, are attracted from out of state, escaping proper law enforcement at their home.

Webb Lake provides a safe haven for this illegal activity because “It’s good for business,” even though this behavior results in the destruction of real estate values while threatening the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.

Wisconsin adds to our problems with a dangerous loophole in state statutes. The DMV and DNR operator’s license laws and enforcement are disconnected. For example, those who have DMV license

revocations for drunk driving can legally drive ATVs on our public roads, to their favorite watering holes, often impaired.

Wisconsin’s historic heavy drinking tradition seems to be at the root of this ridiculous loophole and Webb Lake celebrates it.

For many years, the Town of Webb Lake Board applied common sense and worked hard to comply with state municipality statutes with integrity and solid law enforcement... no secrecy or coverups... now it is a Wild West Show.

Our local police department has been eliminated, the Sheriff is absent, the DNR is absent and the County DA sees no evil... all of which has transformed the town into a paradise for drunks, tavern owners and various other forms of criminal behavior including drugs.

Our broken government and law enforcement invite unreported crime. A wrongful death claim against the Town seems inevitable under the current circumstances.

Fortunately, in today’s world, crime, bad government, self-serving local politicians, corruption, tax fraud, abuse of political power and conflicts of interest, etc. are easily exposed.

I have confidence the offices of Burnett County, Sheriff, District Attorney, DNR, Attorney General, DOJ, DOT, DCI, Assembly Representatives, Federal agencies and honorable media outlets will now proceed with the long overdue investigations and necessary actions to fix our town.

No doubt, eventually Webb Lake will return to good government with the removal of bad actors.

In the meantime, however, our residents will be at risk during the process of dirty house cleaning.

Regardless of your position on Donald Trump and his administration, one thing is universal: Our President is impossible to avoid. So far through his candidacy and presidency, Trump has received three times as much average media coverage as President Obama - and it shows. Every single day, it seems that the American public is focused on a new tweet, statement, or story from the White House. More than ever, it feels as though Americans are watching every move that this president makes, but the truth is: we’re not.

Beyond the constant noise of the Trump presidency, beyond the rants, beyond the controversy, beyond the spectacle, is a systematic, but often silent, attempt by the Trump Administration to tear down vital environmental protections across the United States.

While you’ve been watching pundits and Facebook friends talk and post about a military parade, or the Betsy Ross flag, or a feud with Megan Rapinoe, Donald Trump has been removing safeguards on air and water, endangering American wildlife, threatening public lands, and dismantling environmental criminal enforcement - and you deserve to know this.

Throughout his administration, our president has completed the rollback of forty-nine environmental protections. He has cancelled requirements for oil and gas companies to report methane emissions. He has stopped a prohibition on dangerous hydrofluorocarbons in air conditioners. He has cut the area of two national monuments. He has removed water pollution regulations on federal and Native lands. He has removed protections from the Great Lakes. He

has revoked a directive for consideration of wildlife in development. He has restricted environmental studies.

He has weakened protections for endangered birds.

He has limited assessments on toxic chemicals. He has allowed coal companies to dump waste into local streams. He has withdrawn groundwater protections around uranium mines. He has opened up reckless logging on public lands. He has slowed the prosecution of corporate environmental crimes. Just this week, he legalized a pesticide that has contributed to a 40% loss of beekeeping colonies in the past year.

As we speak, our president is attempting to remove thirty-four additional protections, trying to limit fuel economy standards, repeal carbon emission limits, weaken mercury emission rules, open drillDoug ing in the Arctic National Wildlife La Follette Refuge, increase harmful drilling in American coastal communities, Wisconsin expand coal mining on public lands, Secretary shrink protected waters and lands, of State strip provisions from the Endangered Species Act, reject a ban on potentially neurotoxic chlorpyrifos, ignore toxic discharge into public waterways, and limit EPA rule-making abilities.

Time and time again, the Trump Administration has weakened and destroyed decades of bipartisan measures to safeguard our resources and our environment. And, almost every time, they have done so with little to no public attention or accountability. That should worry every American. The protections that

Donald Trump is fighting against exist so that your child doesn’t drink mercury from your faucet at home.

They exist so that you don’t breathe in coal ash on a daily basis. They exist so that game and wildlife remains or reestablishes as abundant in our state. They exist so that Wisconsin farms aren’t subjected to the decreased crop yields and devastating flooding brought on by climate disruption.

Environmental protection touches almost every part of the everyday American life. From health, to economic stability, to recreation, to national security, and more. It deserves the attention that we are absolutely failing to give it. You can blame the Trump Administration for its lack of transparency. You can blame the media for its lack of coverage. But, at the end of the day, it is our responsibility to hold our government accountable. We have to do a better job of interrogating our politics.

That means, if we want to understand how this administration is attacking our environment, we have to look past the cable news and the social media posts. We have to look past the headlines and the talking points.

Our democracy requires diligence. It requires that we do our research. It requires that we speak up and speak out. It requires that we pay attention. If we don’t, we run the risk of losing our clean air, our clean water, our abundant wildlife, our beautiful public lands, and our expansive environmental opportunity to a destructive administration that profits off of your distraction.

Vietnam Veterans honored JONATHAN RICHIE SENTINEL EDITOR

Nine million Americans served in the Vietnam War, according the United States Department of Veteran Affairs (USDVA). Of those nine million about seven million are still alive. Burnett County has joined a national program to thank those veterans still with us that never received the proper thank you they deserved.

Six men and one spouse were honored at the Burnett County Government Center. Mike Maloney, Don Taylor, Tim Tjader, Russ Unger, John Lesniak, Bert Lund Jr. and Cathy Sullivan, whose husband, Mike Sullivan, served in Vietnam,

all stood in front of the full Burnett County Board and were properly honored for their service to their country during the Vietnam era.

The program is The United States of America Vietnam War Commemorative.

Ret. Col. Doug Stubbe is the Burnett County Veterans Service Officer. This year is the first year the Burnett County Veterans Services office has participated in the program.

“The goal is to publicly thank every Vietnam Veteran,” Stubbe explained to the county board last week. “It is eligible for anyone that served in the U.S. Armed Forces from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975.

The program begun in 2012 and was signed by President Barack Obama and recertified by President Donald Trump in 2017 commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. The program will now run until Veterans Day, 2025.

“I call upon all Americans to offer each of our Vietnam veterans and their families a thank you on behalf of the Nation, both privately and during public ceremonies and programs across our country,” President Trump said in 2017.

Stubbe told a brief story about one of the veterans being honored returning home from Vietnam.

“He got back he arrived in St. Paul and there was a protest at the capital,” Stubbe said.

The cab driver then asked the serviceman to duck down so the protesters would not see him and attack his car.

The man in uniform refused to hide from the protesters.

During the ceremony each veteran was giving a pin and a certificate of honor.

On the front of the pin is the eagle, it “represents courage, honor and dedicated service to our nation.” There is a laurel wreath representing Ret. Col. Doug Stubbe victory, integrity Burnett County Veterans and strength Service Officer and stripes that represent the U.S. flag. Lastly, there are six stars to represent the five allies that served alongside U.S. forces during the 20-year conflict; Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea and Thailand.

On the back of the lapel pin it states, “A Grateful Nation Thanks And Honors You”.

Supervisor Gene Olson told a common story about when he came home from war he was spit on by people. After the veterans were honored the entire audience stood and applauded the honorees for their service to this country.

Stubbe gave his annual report to the board regarding Veteran Services across the county. He reported that in 2018 over 370,000 veterans were in Wisconsin making up about 6.5% of the total population.

In Burnett County there were 1,707 veterans making up almost 11% of the total county population. Stubbe added that veteran status is not asked on the census so the only way the government has to calculate veteran numbers is if the veteran receives federal benefits.

About $14.8 million were invested in Burnett County by the USDVA. The University of Wisconsin Extension office in Madison estimates that the USDVA sustains 110-120 jobs, generates $7 million labor income, over $14 million industry sales and about $800,000 in taxes (including, incomes, sales and property) in Burnett County.

Board passes CAFO moratorium Unlikely to have effect on proposed hog CAFO in Trade Lake as application was already submitted JONATHAN RICHIE EDITOR@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM

The Burnett County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of placing a moratorium on livestock facilities in the county that would have over 1,000 animal units on a farm. These farms are defined as confined animal feeding operations or CAFOs. A proposed hog CAFO in Trade Lake has been a controversial topic for the last few months and possibly crescendoed at the Government Center last week when the normally mostly deserted board room was full of chairs and the audience continued into the hallway, then more chairs wrapped around into the adjoining board room.

It is a typical scene at the Government Center these days whenever the topic of CAFO is on an agenda.

The vote was 17 in favor of the moratorium and three opposed. Those opposed including Don Chell, Duane Johnson and Gene Olson. Johnson asked the board to make it a roll call vote, so the public would know which members of the board support farmers and agriculture in Burnett County.

Corporate Counsel David Grindell has said that the proposed hog CAFO in Trade Lake will most likely not be affected by the moratorium because Cumberland LLC’s application was submitted before it was passed. “In the courts they typically don’t look at these if the application was submitted before the ordinance,�

Grindell said at a public hearing on the moratorium earlier this month.

Greg Odden spoke on behalf of rejecting the CAFO and Andy Marshall spoke in favor of it.

Marshall brought up similar

points that anti-CAFO residents have had for months. There is a potential for manure to seep into the groundwater and destroy Burnett County Natural Resources and possibly decline property value brought on by the potential smell of CAFOs. Numerous people at meetings over the last few months have made similar statements that if they knew a CAFO was going to be built they would have never moved Greg Odden to the area.

Odden urged the county to keep Agriculture alive in Burnett County. He told a story about how his grandfather bought the farm and noted how things in farming have changed over the years. “My grandfather used horses, my father used tractors and now we use bigger tractors,� Odden told the board. “I urge the board not to destroy Ag in Burnett County. Ag is very important here.�

He continued to explain that the meals the board eats and cotton shirts they are wearing, “that all came from a farmer.�

County Chairman Don Taylor spoke to the changes in farming in the area. He continued to say the board should have had something like this in place years ago. “There are no more family farms,�

thing we should have done years ago. We didn’t do anything with the ordinances because we did not know this kind of operation was possible back then.�

Taylor continued to explain that although the ad-hoc committee to study and research CAFOs has been given 12 months with an option to extend the moratorium an extra six months, he believes it will only take about six months altogether to get the proper research and data to complete their task.

Their task as outlined by the moratorium first passed unanimously by the Natural Resources committee earlier this month. “The purpose of this ordinance is to allow Burnett County to impose a moratorium providing adequate time to study, review, consider and determine whether amendments to the Livestock Facilities Licensing Ordinance or creation of a Livestock Facilities Zoning Ordinance is required to protect public health or safety in Burnett County in light of the unique environment and the Burnett County Comprehensive Plan. Further, the imposition of a moratorium will allow Burnett County to determine whether it has adequate resources to enforce any new or existing livestock facility ordinance.�

Taylor concluded the topic explaining that the committee isn’t against agriculture. “We’re not anti-Ag,� Taylor said. “Many of us in this room have farming in our background. This moratorium is to take a look at potential conflicts and we’ll look at our ordinances.

Sentencing wraps up Danbury arson case JONATHAN RICHIE SENTINEL EDITOR

Rusty Matrious, 25, and Kawliga Tucker, 20, both of Danbury were charged with felony arson in November 2017. Both pleaded guilty to the charge and Matrious was sentenced last week.

Both men were also charged with first-degree reckless injury, a class D felony and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, a class F felony. Matrious was also charged with resisting an officer, a class A misdemeanor. Those other charges Matrious were all dismissed but read in for sentencing purposes.

According to online court records, Matrious pleaded guilty to the felony charge of Arson of building without owner’s consent in February. He was sentenced to 5 years of initial confinement in state prison on Friday Tucker and will serve 15 years of extended supervision.

Tucker pleaded guilty to the same class C felony charge of Arson of building without owner’s consent last year in November and was sentenced to eight years of probation.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were dispatched to a structure fire on Lake 26 Road on Nov. 25 just after midnight.

Matrious and his mother, Claudette, were allegedly fighting. He told his mother that he started the fire.

Claudette was inside when the fire started.

She was seriously injured and screaming for help and ultimately airlifted out because of the burns she received.

The criminal complaint states that both subjects looked highly intoxicated. It also says, “since this was done while persons were inside, it was done with utter disregard for human life.�

Around 3:30 a.m. Matrious and Tucker were talking on the phone with someone and Tucker was throwing up.

Siren funds may be down this year

A Veteran’s Memories Richard Hess served in the US Army and was called back during the Cuban Missile Crisis

Siren’s school board met on Monday night to discuss the possibility of having less aid from the state government for the upcoming school year.

Siren Superintendent Kevin Shetler announced at the meeting that Siren school state aid may drop by over $100,000 after the state budget moves through the legislature. The school will not know how much, if any, aid is being cut until October 15.

“None of this is set in stone,” Shetler said. “The $113,000 loss is just an estimate.

I’m confident it could change over the next few months.”

Shetler stressed, “The last line of cuts is personnel.” He continued to say when he meets with staff at the beginning of the school year.

This year Siren will start classes August 26 so they will be able to let the students out earlier. That way it will give construction crews more time in the building over next summer when they will make renovations to the building following the $4 million referendum that passed earlier this year.

“This is a problem and we’re addressing it,” Shetler said.

In other items: • Siren athletic director Ryan Karsten gave an update on the football field.

He said the work is done on the field they are just waiting now to see if it will be ready to play on for the first game in August.

• There will be a public hearing on July 29 with the firm LHB. The company will be showing preliminary blue prints for the changes to the school from the referendum funds.

While at the Chemical School, he was also assigned to guard duty many times for up to 12 hours a day during his 14 months stay. While on guard duty, there was no protective gear provided for him to wear. While he was stationed at Fort McClellan, he was fortunate enough to become

At the young age of 17, Richard Hess of Trade Lake served three years in the US Army from 1957-1961.

After his basic training in Fort Polk, LA., he chose to go into chemistry at the Chemical School in Fort McClellan, AL. However, it was not for becoming a chemist- it was chemical core warfare. From September of 1957 to November of 1958, he was part of the Demonstration Company in support of the Chemical School. He was involved in all of the training events

After his stay at Fort McClellan, Richard was shipped off to Germany.

It was in Germany that he received his background in demolition.

“While in Germany, when you went on alert you have to destroy all of your stuff. All of your equipment and that. I was training to go ahead and demolition all of the barracks and all the vehicles.” It was also in Germany that he got the honor to meet Elvis.

Spooner death ruled homicide JONATHAN RICHIE SENTINEL EDITOR

The Spooner Police Department is continuing to investigate a death from an incident in Spooner earlier this month.

According to the Spooner Police Department, Troy Sweep, 52, Spooner, was found dead in his home in Spooner on July 16.

An autopsy of the victim was performed, and the death has been ruled a homicide,” Spooner Police Chief Jerry Christman stated in a release.

The incident is under investigation by the Spooner Police Department, Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin State Patrol, Washburn County Coroner Office and the Wisconsin State Crime Lab. “The case remains under investigation at this time. Law Enforcement does not believe the public is in any danger, at this time,” Christman concluded.

The airshow that nearly wasn’t VETERAN: Hess, called back to BEVERLY SWANSON

SIREN–– It takes quite a few hours, months actually, to plan and prepare for the Burnett County Airport / Gandy Dancer Airshow. It starts with contacting performers, static displays and vendors - generally planning out the event. On Tuesday, July 2, we put the banners up from all our last year’s contributors hoping they would be willing to participate in this free community event once again. Our 4th of July Parade float was our next push to remind people of the upcoming event. So far, everything was on track. This community is our financial support and as usual, most everyone we asked was willing to help.

The week of the event is huge for the 4-5 men who lay out the crowd barriers, the parking and vendor areas, the electrical lines required for the public announcement system and the temporary FAA Tower, at the airport. This year was especially taxing due to the high level of humidity and air temperature, so the men worked daily until noon leading up to the show.

Friday noon was the target, for everything and everyone to be put in place and ready. The performers arrived on time excited and ready for their practice flights, and even though we were under tornado watch, the planes flew – what an exciting event.

The day of the event: Saturday morning came with the threat of thunderstorms. We were praying for this to all blow over and let the show begin, but it was not to happen, at least not on time. Susan Davey with her Stearman, Dave Scott with his Pitts, Vanguard Squadron’s four RV planes, Grant Neilson’s CAP 232, and Craig Gifford’s Extra 300 were tucked away into hangars while lightning and

remain. Spirits were still high although the show was delayed for an hour.

Two F-16 fighter jets from the Minnesota Air National Guard showed up right on time at 11:15 a.m. for their fly over, which was planned to honor our local veterans. They flew close to the ground with their loud jet engines and fired up the crowd with their after-burners.

Surely this would turn out to be a fine day for an airshow.

Then the rains came again and set in for a long drizzle. Still the performers were optimistic. The 1 p.m. start time was delayed slightly, but by 1:20 p.m. the Vanguard Squadron was taxiing down the runway preparing for the opening act. The crowd built up, cars were parking everywhere they could find a spot, parents and children rushed in to see the marvelous show. Along Airport Road to the south of the airport, cars lined up to watch this spectacular event.

storms surrounded, but their attitudes were positive and performers anxious to fly.

The storms hit around 10:30 a.m. Strong winds and gusts twisted the metal tent structures and tore the covers off. Rain soaked attendees ran for their vehicles and departed the airport. Some of the vendors packed up. A few devout aviation buffs headed for the terminal building for cover. Lucky for them, as one of the volunteers arrived with a sheet cake and put on the coffee for everyone.

Prior to an Airshow, the “Air Boss� meets with the performers, the airport manager, the FAA, the ramp superintendent, the aircraft parking superintendent and the crowd control volunteers, to discuss how the event is going to proceed minute by minute and to talk safety procedures. Usually, this is a private event, but everyone in the Terminal was allowed to

At Last, the Bicycle Raffle was drawn and three lucky winners contacted, and then the crowd gathered around the performance planes. Only in a small town like Siren can we get up close and personal with aerobatic performers such as these. What a wonderful experience for our people in Burnett County.

In Florence, Italy Richard was a part of the honor guard.

This three-year service in the US Army ended up funding his schooling to attend the University of Minnesota. This time, he really was going for chemistry.

He wanted to become a chemistry teacher and a coach. He was in his second year at the U of M in October of 1961 when he received a letter stating, “In 10 days report to Fort Bragg, NC.� He was being called back in preparation for war because Russia had missiles in transit to Cuba to strike the United States.

He was in disbelief that he was being called back after he had already served his time.

It was just in April that he used $1,000 of the $3,000 he had saved up from the Army to buy a duplex, he married his wife in June, and she was pregnant with their first child. He was a full-time student with a fulltime evening job. When he attempted an appeal, the answer he received was, “Your country needs you again.�

They needed his service again because he was trained and had experience in demolitions, atomic, biological and chemical warfare. He remembers when the Russian president said, “I will first divide you and then I will conquer you,� and he thought, if he can help prevent that, he better report to Fort Bragg.

When he reached Fort Bragg, he was assigned as a Sergeant to a chemical company of reservists from the Dells in Wisconsin. They were melded with the 7th Special Forces and the 82 Airborne. They were trained as a strike force when needed.

They were back to the smell of skin burning from tear gas and blowing things up.

As part of their training they were a part of a war game, like war simulation. Richard and a few other men were sent as a group, dropped off in the snowy mountains of West Virginia in the month February. Their job was to run from the 82nd Airborne and to not get caught.

Richard said they were to spend between six and eight weeks out there, “Us running from the Airborne, living off the land, sleeping under pine trees, all that stuff.�

would be treated like an actual prisoner of war (POW), so the objective was to not get caught.

Richard got caught. “My team, we scattered, I ran, I came back for my team and I got caught. I got to kneel in the mud for 12 hours with my rifle sticking in my back, my clothes off hanging over my rifle, in February, in mud.�

While in the service at Fort Bragg, Richard ended up missing the birth of his first child.

To this day, he does not think that his former wife has ever forgiven him. When President Kennedy’s show of force worked, the Russian ships with the missiles turned back from Cuba and Richard got to go home after nine months. After returning home, he went back to being a full-time student and having a full-time evening job, but he wasn’t adapting well. He was continuing to have dreams that he would receive another letter. “That was bothersome to me for a long time that- are they going to come and get me again?�

To this day, he is still needing to be careful about what he relives and which stories he talks about. Speaking about the wrong things could very well cause him to have flashbacks.

He had a flashback recently and had to go see a psychologist who specialized in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in order to get his mind back on track.

Richard is the only male in his family who has had prostate cancer, which he had removed.

He is currently battling squamous skin cell cancer on his fingers and arms which he received from touching and being around radiation and chemicals. He has had three finger surgeries and two chemical arm washes so far. With everything he has been going through, he joined the million-member VA health program and volunteers for all of the testing in order to help out any other veterans that may be suffering from the same conditions.

We hope you made it through the storm on Friday. The storm left us with just a lot of rain and leaves on the ground. Some were not so fortunate as winds, hail and trees left broken windows in homes, buildings and cars. There were also many power outages.

The annual Watercross kept Grantsburg busy over the weekend and filled the town on Saturday night for the fireworks. The Pink Squirrel was open as well and gave many a chance to experience its goodies.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, it is National Night out. This is usually a fun night with people getting together at the park. I haven’t seen any ads yet but keep it in mind.

decided that the security deposit will be changed from $50 to $60.

The executive board meeting will be held at 11 Aug. 7.

11 Wisconsin hospitals stopped delivering babies MADISON — Eleven rural hospitals in Wisconsin stopped routinely delivering babies in the past 10 years, a report shows.

One of those hospitals is Burnett Medical Center in Grantsburg.

The closures were due to the challenge of a low number of both on-call providers and number of deliveries, the report by the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health said.

The report released earlier this week indicates that five of the 35 rural hospitals still providing obstetrics are at risk of ending the service, though none say they plan to stop it.

Penny Black, data manager for the rural health office, declined to say which hospitals are at risk for discontinuing deliveries, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

Still, 56% of the state's rural hospitals perform routine deliveries, compared with 40% of rural hospitals nationally.

Nearly 99% of women

of child-bearing age in Wisconsin live within a 30-minute drive of a hospital that provides obstetrics, the report showed.

Hospitals that don't provide obstetrics sometimes do emergency deliveries.

“While it is encouraging that no rural hospitals reported intentions of discontinuing obstetric services, it is questionable whether this event is frequently foreseen,” the report said. “Given current trends in obstetric unit closure and provider coverage and skill maintenance issues, optimism surrounding these data should be cautious and

Summer is half over, yet some of HSBC’s residents are still waiting to find the purr-fect homes.

Some have been at the shelter since there was snow on the ground. Their extended stays are in no way indicative of their nattures; they are all affecttionate and happy pets.

Why reintroduce residents from past profiles?

Another reason is there is still a perception that shelter animals have a limited number of days before they are euthanized. Honestly, it happens in places, but each facility makes its own policies regarding euthanasia practices.

HSBC does not euthaGrace nize an animal to create space in the shelter, nor is there a time limit assigned to an animal’s stay.

Euthanasia is an option if an animal is potentially dangerous to humans and other animals, or if it is ill and suffering and beyond help.

AN OUTDOORSMAN’S JOURNAL MARK WALTERS

Hello friends, I have written several times about the fact that I am blessed to know hundreds of really good people, and this week I can say that again as I made a whole bunch of new friends that you are about to read about.

Chuck and Kathie Stelzners are from Howards Grove and last winter started corresponding with Selina and I. Back in May, Chuck asked me if I would like to spend some time with him at Oneida counties, Camp American Legion. I had no idea what Camp American Legion was and was told that it is a resort/ retreat that is owned and managed

by The American Legion and is a place for Wisconsin veterans and active duty members that could use a place to rest and rehabilitate.

Camp American Legion is on Big Carr Lake and borders the south end of the Minocqua chain of lakes.

In our first conversation I found out that I could bring my 18’6� War Eagle up to camp and take past and present service members fishing and that is what I did. Most importantly, I learned about an incredible resort that was originally created for WWI vets, and is a spiritual place to spend time.

Tuesday, June 9 High 82, low 54 I had no idea what I was getting into and I was amazed when I arrived this afternoon with my golden retriever “Fire� who would be a big hit the next three days. First, I met Chuck Stelzners for the first time and the camp manager Don Grundy. About all I can say about Don Grundy is he is a blessing for this place. He can build, create, speak, clean up and cook.

This entire experience is free to those who qualify, and all meals are shared together in a very unique lodge that was built in 1929. About

1200 people stay here a year and I started making friends right off the bat and making reservations. When I say reservations, I mean booking out fishing trips which would be a total of seven where people signed up and I took them trolling for walleye and smallmouth bass.

What really impressed me about this camp is all of the volunteers, they need more, of which most are

great day in my life. I taught our heroes and some family members how to troll. Most importantly, we went for a boat ride and just talked.

In every case I had someone else run the boat, which I just met, as I was running six lines for my new friends.

In a lot of cases I listened to men who I had just met in my boat, share stories about the military

past service members and many of them are veterans of the Vietnam War. These guys and gals take folks fishing on pontoon boats, help cook, do dishes, and simply spend time with a lot of Wisconsin’s heroes.

Tonight, after my first expedition I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Nance. Dave volunteers here for most of the season and is just a real pleasant man to be around.

Tonight, Dave had taken Dawn Putzke and her three children Alden, Presley, and Tillie fishing and everyone was in a great mood.

Dawn is a Wisconsin Air National Guard member at Volk Field and is here with her father Joe Resop Jr. Joe Resop served in Vietnam in 67’, 68’ and was beat up pretty bad in the Battle of Hue but still enjoys each and every day.

or life after the military and for myself, it was an incredible experience.

We have all heard about the damage done to some people in military, conflict that does not have obvious wounds and over this three-day period I learned how Camp American Legion is such an incredible place for folks to come and heal.

The meals together, and the cabins that are sponsored with great pride by American Legion posts from throughout Wisconsin, are all great.

I made a point of not asking any questions and today I fished with a father, son team of Brent and Wayland from Green Bay. Brent and Wayland are just starting to get into outdoor experiences and for myself it would have been worth a $500 bill to see how happy they were whenever they landed another fish and the joy they had together through their shared experiences.

Folks, Camp American Legion is there for those in need, but does have a problem, and that is that there simply is not as many people in the American Legion as there used to be which in short comes to dollars and cents.

Think about this for a second, all the wars since WWI, this place has been there to help our vets at least for a week of their lives each year.

St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey Promotes Siergiej and Hires Engstrom St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Heather Weems has announced the promotion of Jinelle Siergiej to associate head coach and the hiring of Molly Engstrom as an assistant coach for the SCSU women’s hockey team.

The staff changes follow the recent naming of Steve Macdonald as the Huskies’ new head coach at SCSU. Macdonald was promoted after serving as the Huskies’ assistant coach from 2014 to 2019.

Both Siergiej and Engstrom have extensive coaching and playing resumes that includes Olympic and World Championship experiences along with playing

collegiate hockey in the WCHA at the University of Wisconsin.

A two-time member of the United States women’s hockey team at the Winter Olympics, Engstrom won a bronze medal with Team USA in 2006 at the Turin Winter Games and a silver medal in 2010 at the Vancouver Winter Engstrom Games. She received the Best Defenseman award at the 2010 Winter Games.

A member of Team USA at six IIHF World Women’s Championships from

2004 to 2011, Engstrom helped Team USA win IIHF World Championships in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011, along with silver medals in 2004 and 2007.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the SCSU staff and team,” Engstrom said. “I can’t thank Steve (Macdonald) and Jinelle (Siergiej)enough for the opportunity, and for all of the people who reached out and helped me out during this job search. I’m excited to be back in and a part of the WCHA, and I’m really looking forward to the future here at St. Cloud State. ” She most recently served as a USA Hockey Developmental Scout since January 2019 and a IIHF U18 High Perfor-

mance Camp Coach/Ambassador since April 2016.

Engstrom played and coached in the Swedish Women’s Professional Hockey League (SDHL) from 2016 to 2018, and helped her team Djurgarden IF win the SDHL championship in 2017. She served as the girls’ varsity hockey head coach and assistant athletic director at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H. from 2014-2016.

In addition to her professional playing and coaching experience in Sweden, Engstrom played professional hockey with teams in Minneapolis, Toronto and SEE HOCKEY, PAGE 23

LaVonne F. Peterson, age 880, a lifelong resident of S Siren, passed away Sunday, J July 14, 2019.

LaVonne was born in S Siren on July 6, 1939 to pare ents, William and Dorothy R Richison. LaVonne grew up iin Siren, graduating from S Siren High School.

On June 6, 1959, she and G Gene were united in marrriage in Siren.

LaVonne owned and operated the Lucky Strike Resort on Devils Lake with husband, Gene from 1969-1988.

They spent years serving meals and sharing stories with snowmobilers and ice fisherman from all over.

LaVonne then managed apartment complexes for C.G. Rein from 1988-2004. She was the friendly face seen at the Pheasant Inn and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where she cleaned until she retired in 2018.

When she was not working, LaVonne was always helping others. She did, on occasion take time for herself to play cards, take a walk, spend time with her grandkids and just have a nice visit with friends and family. She and husband, Gene were avid sports fans, cheering on the Packers and Twins.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Roger Richison and sister, Mona Rasmussen.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 60 years, Gene; sons, Kris and Carl; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; her sisters, Shirley Dickinson, Carol Radke and Norma Dake; along with numerous nieces and nephews, relative and many dear friends.

A Memorial Service was held held for LaVonne on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 12 p.m. (visitation was from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.) at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Jody Walter officiating.

Dolores “Dee” Troutman, a age 94, of Rochester, form merly of Minneapolis, died S Saturday, July 13, 2019, at R River Bend Assisted Living iin Rochester. A memorial sservice was held at 4 p.m. o on July 21, 2019 at Evangel U United Methodist Church, R Rochester Minn.

Dolores Roberta Emma D Drinkall was born on March 119, 1925, to Roy and Florence (Williams) Drinkall. She graduated from high school in Dundee, Illinois. On October 16, 1948, she married Kenneth Troutman. They lived in Minneapolis before retiring in Wisconsin. In 2017, Dee moved to Rochester to be closer to her family. She worked as a teacher at Humbolt Institute in Minneapolis before starting her own business, Princess House selling crystal and china. Most importantly, Dee was a homemaker and raised her two children, Judy and Thomas. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Dee was an active volunteer at the local church and fire department.

Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth who died on February 3, 2001; brothers, John, Dale and Roy Drinkall; and sister, Helen Neyman.

Dee is survived by her children, Judy (Randy) Walter of Reno, NV and Tom Troutman of Rochester; grandchildren, Jeremiah (Trisha) Troutman, Stephanie (Errin) Niemeyer, Mariesa Ehlert, Tamara (Adam) Hartman, Justina Walter and Scout Troutman; great-grandchildren, Kieala Ehlert, Dominick Troutman, Jagen Niemeyer, Terik Troutman, Kierra Ehlert, Emrick Troutman, Coy Niemeyer and Aaron Hartman.

PRESENTATION – NORTHWEST REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION – VISIONS NORTHWEST BY CHRYSTAL ROHDE Chairman Taylor introduced Chrystal Rohde of Northwest Regional Planning Commission (NWRPC). Ms. Rhode presented a PowerPoint and spoke on NWRPC current activities in Burnett County, planning and community development, housing, environmental issues and economic development. Ms. Rhode gave an overview of Visions Northwest and its key projects.

RESOLUTION 2019-12 IN SUPPORT OF DESIGNATING JUNE 2019 AS METHAMPHETAMINE AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, Methamphetamine is a powerful and addictive central nervous system stimulant with long-lasting effects; and WHEREAS, crime related to methamphetamine abuse continues to increase; and WHEREAS, methamphetamine labs are costly to clean up in that every pound of methamphetamine produced can yield up to five pounds of toxic waste, representing a public danger to adults and children; and WHEREAS, National Association of Counties surveys have shown that methamphetamine also places significant burdens on local social service and health care resources, increasing out-of-home placements for children, sending more people to public hospital emergency rooms than any other drug and producing an ever-growing need for methamphetamine treatment programs; and WHEREAS, designating June as “Methamphetamine Awareness Month” would increase awareness of methamphetamine and educate the public on effective ways to help prevent methamphetamine use.

RESOLUTION 2019-16 COUNTY FOREST ADMINISTRATION GRANT PROGRAM WHEREAS, the State of Wisconsin and many Wisconsin Counties have a long and rich history managing timber; and WHEREAS, the sustainable management of timber resources greatly contributes to Wisconsin’s industry, commerce, and economic development activities; and WHEREAS, the State recognizes the important County partnership by providing the County Forest Administration Grant Program; and WHEREAS, the Grant program has been used to fund the Burnett County Forest Assistant Administrator position since 1999; and WHEREAS, the requirements for funding this position can be found in the definition of forester within NR 47.70(2)(e) NR 1.21(2)(e): “Forester” means a person other than one employed by the department who has received a bachelor’s or higher degree in forestry from a school of forestry with a curriculum accredited by the Society of American Foresters or and equivalent degree, as determined by the chief state forester; and WHEREAS, it is becoming more and more difficult to find individuals in Northern Wisconsin that fit this definition of a forester; and WHEREAS, Burnett County has asked, and been denied, multiple requests of the Chief State Forester to consider that our existing Forest Administrator with a two-year forestry degree and over 20 years of service, qualify for this grant; and WHEREAS, the Wisconsin County Forest Association Board voted to support our request and the state still denied it; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Burnett County is seeking a change to the Forester definition within NR 47.70(2)(e) NR 1.21(2)(e): to read, “Forester” means a person other than one employed by the department who has received a bachelor’s degree in forestry from a school of forestry with a curriculum accredited by the Society of American Foresters or an equivalent degree, including a two year forestry degree with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a County Forestry Department, or as determined by the Chief State Forester.

RESOLUTION 2019-17 CANCEL TAX DEEDS WHEREAS, on February 19, 2019, the Administration Committee approved a Resolution Authorizing the Issuance of a Tax Deed for tax delinquent parcels; and WHEREAS, the Burnett County Board of Supervisors canceled their February 21, 2019, meeting and the resolution was inadvertently omitted from the March 21, 2019, agenda; and WHEREAS, Burnett County recorded Tax Deeds in the Office of the Burnett County Register of Deeds on April 23, 2019, as Document 455977 and April 24, 2019, as Document 455983 including parcels listed in the committee approved resolution; and WHEREAS, Wisconsin Statutes 75.14, states: “No deed may be issued under this section until the county board, by resolution, orders issuance of the deed.”

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT Tax Deeds identified as Document 455977 and Document 455983 be canceled; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, THAT the County Clerk furnish a certificate, according to Wisconsin Statutes 75.23, to the owners of the lands described in the deeds, stating the fact of such cancelation and the certificate be recorded in the Office of the Register of Deeds.

(3) The County Board Chairperson shall set the agenda for county board meetings with input from the County Administrator and the County Clerk; and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Burnett County Board of Supervisors does hereby accept and adopt the County Board Code of Standing Rules; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Standing Rules be published in a Burnett County Supervisors Handbook.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE RECYCLING CONTROL COMMISSION Motion to approve the appointments of Brent Blomberg, Philip Lindeman, Dennis Quinn and Louis D’Jock for a two-year term to expire April 2021 was made by Supervisor Chell, seconded by Supervisor Lund. There is one vacancy to fill and Chairman Taylor asked for interested parties to contact him. Motion carried, voice vote.

Public Safety Committee report was given by Supervisor Pardun. Supervisor Olson provided an update on Drug Court.

Infrastructure Committee report was given by Supervisor Gronski.

Health and Community Services Committee report was given by Supervisor Sybers.

Natural Resources Committee report was given by Supervisor Bickford. Forest and Parks Administrator Jake Nichols invited the supervisors to the Highway/Forestry Facility on State Road 70, after the county board meeting, to view the completed camper cabin built mainly by Forest and Parks Technician Tory Jeske.

Land Use and Information Committee report was given by Supervisor Bickford.

Supervisor Byrne reported on the Northern Waters Library meeting he attended. They will be requesting a 1% increase from the county for the 2020 budget. The state has cut back on funding dollars for the mail a book program and they are working on online programs and classes for development.

ADMINISTRATOR REPORT Administrator Ehalt met with representatives from the Big Wood Lake Association and citizens opposing the purposed Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation. Mr. Ehalt reviewed the upcoming budget process and timeline.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS There were none.

Boston in the CWHL and NWHL from 2007 to 2013.

She helped her Brampton-Canadette Thunder team win the CWHL title in 2008 and the Minnesota Whitecaps win the Western Women’s Hockey League crown in 2009.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Engstrom played collegiate hockey in the WCHA with the Badgers. She received First Team All-America honors in college and was also named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, and was selected as a Patty Kazmaier Award top 10 finalist in 2005.

She went on to receive a Masters of Sports Administration from the Russian International Olympic University in 2014.

A native of Siren, Engstrom participated in track and field and golf in high school and won a Wisconsin high school league state discus title in track and field during her prep career.

“Jinelle (Siergiej) has been such an integral member of the St. Cloud State Women’s hockey team for the past five seasons,” Macdonald said. “She has positively impacted the program through her knowledge and dedication for assisting the student-athletes’ growth both on and off the ice. Her tireless work ethic and passion to better those around her will only propel SCSU women’s hockey forward. To be able to continue to work alongside her is truly an honor.”

Siergiej most recently completed her fifth season as an assistant coach with the St. Cloud State women’s hockey team. She played collegiate hockey at the University of Wisconsin from 2004-08 and gained All-WCHA honors in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Siergiej was part of two national team titles at UW in 2007 and 2008 and left the campus as the Badgers’ all-time leader in goals, game winning goals and power play goals.

Siergiej represented the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and brought home a silver medal with Team USA that year. She also played for Team USA and earned a silver medal at the 2007 IIHF World Championships, and was part of the Four Nation’s tournament with Team USA in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

“I am honored and excited to continue to work hard for our program here at SCSU,” Siergiej said.

“Although titles have changed, I continue to be committed in making this the best experience both on and off the ice for our players. I am thrilled to be coaching with Molly (Engstrom) and for the exceptional hockey experience and knowledge she is bringing to our players. We share experiences on and off the ice that will be beneficial for our program and the future here at St. Cloud State University.”

Prior to her arrival at SCSU, Siergiej served as the head coach of the girls’ team at Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisc. and was an assistant coach at Robert Morris University during the 201314 season. A resident of St. Cloud, Siergiej is married to Mike Siergiej and they have two sons Colden and Rory.

It’s OK to weep; in fact, it is good to weep

“Jesus wept.� I believe these are among the most profound words in the Bible. They come from the story of Lazarus’ death in John 11. Jesus, the very one who came to bring us new life, who conquers death and restores us and our relationship with God, weeps at the death of his friend.

As a culture we have a difficult time with death. When my husband died last October, I heard first hand all the well-meaning phrases: “He’s in a better place.â€?, “You will be together again.â€?, “You will move on.â€? ‌ And though many are true, they are not true to the reality of the moment. The reality of the moment was/is that my love, the father

of my children was no longer with us as we wanted him to be. And we wept. We still weep. It is ok to weep; in fact, it is good to weep. Jesus himself gives us permission!

The reality is that death has ripped us away from the full presence of the one that we love and that changes us. We need to acknowledge that, and to live in it, as we learn who we are because of the love we shared and who we will be as we continue on the journey before us.

It is not easy; it is full of pain. But there is another truth, Jesus promises to be with us in the pain as we heal. I read a quote from Anne Lamott, “You will lose someone you

The number 715 of Jake Neurer had a bad crash over the handlebars of his sled. He was helped back to shore by a retriever and WIA worker where he was then placed on a stretcher and looked at by paramedics and EMS. He made a comeback and even took second place in the Semi-Pro Stock Oval finals.

The 4th Annual World Championship Canoe Race took place Saturday Evening. The competitors had to begin the race by chugging a beer and then spinning around their canoe paddle 10 times before taking a lap around the lake in their canoes.
