Fatal two-vehicle crash in Swiss TOWN OF SWISS––On Friday, June 22, 2018 at 8:14 p.m. the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 35 near County Highway H in the Town of Swiss. Michael James Sanders, 62, Superior, was killed in the crash. Three minutes before the crash was reported, the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a southbound vehicle operating at a very high rate of speed in the northbound lane of STH 35. Initial investigation of this incident indicates that a 2002 Dodge Dakota operated by Sanders was southbound in the northbound lane of STH 35 when it struck a northbound vehicle driven by Arthur Foix, 51, Minneapolis. After striking Foix’s vehicle, Sander’s vehicle

entered the ditch, struck several trees and caught fire; he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Burnett County Medical Examiner. Foix and a juvenile passenger in his vehicle were airlifted to Twin Cities area hospitals with serious injuries. No updates on their conditions were available at the time of this release. The Wisconsin State Patrol, St. Croix Tribal Police, Danbury Fire Department, Webb Lake First Responders and North Memorial Ambulance also responded to this incident. No further information will be released at this time; investigation and crash reconstruction continues by the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol. - Burnett County Sheriff’s Department

BURNETT COUNTY––Michael E. Denn, 56, Grantsburg has been charged with theft of movable property (>$10,000$100,000) a class G Felony after allegedly stealing a Bobcat skid steer. If found guilty, he faces 10 years in prison and a fine of $25,000. with a potential $46,500 in fines and over 26 years in prison. Denn was already out on cash bond for another case where he was suspected of driving under the influence of methamphetamine and lead officers on a late night chase which ended up with him being charged with five felonies including battery to a law enforcement officer, escape and attempting to disarm a peace officer. He has been described by Sheriff Ron Wilhelm as a “major player” in the methamphetamine game in Burnett County. “That week was very intense. It was probably the most intense week we’ve ever had in terms of a search party in the county.” It’s been a decade since Burnett County Deputy Ron Wilhelm was in the group that found then 25-year-old Keith Kennedy, a non-verbal autistic man who had gone missing from Trade Lake Camp, which was located south of Grantsburg.
