Danbury fire on Main Street

Danbury Fire & Rescue received a call for a structure fire at the on Main Street in Danbury June 10 at approximately 4:30 p.m. The building is home to Amelia’s Care and Bakery and Cabin Corner Gifts. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the building sustained substantial damage. There were no reported injuries. Webster and Siren Fire Departments assisted with the fire, along with the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office and North Ambulance. The fire is still under investigation.

Methamphetamine forum to be held in Grantsburg The issue of methamphetamine is a major concern for many citizens in Burnett County. A forum will be held in Grantsburg later this month to hear from officials on what can be done to help with what some grouped into the nationwide epidemic.

The forum will be held June 20 at 5:30 in the Grantsburg Public Li-

brary. There will be a representative from U.S. Senator Ron Johnson’s office that is set to be there along with State Representative Gae Magnafici is also scheduled to be there and hear from citizens on the methamphetamine problem that is continuing to grow.

in Grantsburg has been going on for years and there is a group of citizens that has been taking it to the Grantsburg authorities for over a year.

In May, this group came to the Grantsburg board and wanted to know what was happening with the

However, she is not your average Grantsburg graduate – born in Guatemala and without being adopted probably would have starved to death as a child. With the help of a prosthetic leg, Juana has plans for the future and has a ton of support from her family.

Spooner man arrested for suspected posession of child pornography SPOONER––The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force today announced that Jeffrey A. Vesta, a pastor and former teacher in Wisconsin and Oregon, was arrested at his residence in Spooner, Wis. on June 4, 2019 for suspected possession of child pornography.

a search warrant on Mr. Vesta’s residence and took him into custody. Mr. Vesta was booked in the Washburn County Jail on June 4 and attended a bail hearing on June 5 in Washburn County. Mr. Vesta was released on a signature bond. An initial appearance will be held June 17, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Washburn County Courthouse.

As in any criminal proceeding, Mr.

Vesta is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

on where she came from, the fact that she had to overcome everything before the age of four, it was a victory for us.

It really shows you it doesn’t matter where you come from.”

Jenny is talking about the struggles Juana dealt with in her home country of Guatemala. Her mother died during childbirth and her father wasn’t around. Her uncle couldn’t take care of her and turned her over to a state mental institution and she eventually ended up in an orphanage.

In 2003, if Juana wasn’t adopted they were going to “hack her leg off.” Jenny had been talking with a social worker in charge of Juana’s case and explained the Olson’s were interested in adopting Juana.

Tests revealed Juana had some type of hepatitis and later that she had Pterygium, a congenital deformity. A few months later her leg was amputated with everything being taken care of by the Shriner’s Hospital.

“We are so grateful for everything the Shriners have helped us with,” Jenny said.

The Sentinel’s reported on Juana’s journey back in 2005 when she was just starting early childhood classes at Nelson School.

Fourteen years later, Juana is a high school graduate and is planning on going to cosmetology school with the hopes of becoming a hair stylist. She

spoke about the fears of graduating.

“The ceremony was really exciting,” Juana said. “When we were practicing before I was worried about tripping and falling on my face onstage. That would have been a disaster.”

not mince words when talking about the dire situation Juana was in before they adopted her.

“She would probably be dead,” Eric said. “She could have starved to death within a year if we wouldn’t have adopted her.”

They are incredibly proud of their daughter. The Olson’s have two sons, Erland and Garrett.

Over the last 14 years, Juana has gone through 8 different prosthetic legs and a walker she used when she was very young. They are all lined up in a photo Jenny shows off. Juana has participated in Little Miss Wisconsin, which she has a finalist trophy from.

In school, Juana was involved in choir and band.

“I played the flute, clarinet and saxophone,” Juana said.

“She’s also really good at art. She’s had work in the school display case,” Jenny adds.

“She was also involved in drama. Not the drama club, just drama,” Eric says half-jokingly as Juana gives him the side-eye glare.

Eric and Jenny are both proud to see how far Juana has come. Her graduation party is full of friends and family.

When asked about what it was like seeing Juana walk across the stage Eric jokes about not being able to see her behind the podium and Jenny starts to cry.

“Just to see how she’s grown over the years,” Jenny said. “She’s an inspiration to a lot of people.”

Juana explains she puts others first in any way she can. She always tries to help other people.

“High School was fun,” Juana states.

“That was the end of a chapter and now I’m ready to start another chapter.”

“It’s shaping up to be another spring at the problem property,” Natalie Finch told the board in May. “The other day we found a number of needles, or drug paraphernalia, if you want to call it that. We are seeing increased action and heavy traffic at the, what I’ll call, known problem property.”

They first came to the board last August to voice their complaints

about the property in hopes of getting the owners evicted. A petition to have the owner evicted garnered over 100 signatures and led to Then in November, the owner of the nuisance property on N. Pine Street pleaded no contest to a civil public nuisance charge and was fined $114.50. Some thought that was not enough of a punishment and were worried about the consequences of having a “drug house” in a neighborhood with young families and children.

Sheriff Tracy Finch has spoken

on the topic of methamphetamine a number of times.

“A lot of the issues with methamphetamine are linked to mental health,” Finch said last week.

“Some people have mental illness that leads them to meth and some have mental illness from using.”

Sheriff Finch has stuck to one of her core campaign promises and promoted Mikal Anton to full-time drug detective for the sheriff’s office.

Mom! Brake lights!

T

here is this funny thing that happens outside my house most days around five in the evening. A student driver car pulls up in front of my house and uses my neighbor’s car to practice parallel parking.

What are your thoughts on parallel parking?

It was the only thing we were taught to fear when I took driver’s education. It was only because it had become unpopular to show a week’s worth of car accidents and other terrible things that can happen behind the wheel.

Personally, I try to avoid it like the plague. Like most things in my life, this isn’t because I don’t think I can parallel park – it’s because I don’t want people watching me try to do it, especially if my car won’t fit in the space.

To avoid parallel parking, I tend to go around the block once or twice and look for a space I can Sentinel pull into without issue.

I remember being in that special driver’s ed car.

It had the second steering wheel and brake pedal for the instructor in case of emergency.

One of my friends from high school was confused by the second brake pedal. He was under the impression that the driver of the car was in charge of accelerating and then the instructor was in charge of the brake.

“So, wait. I’m supposed to be in charge of the brake AND the gas,” he said in astonishment.

“Well I’m glad I know that now.”

Needless to say, I was very glad he was never driving when I was observing. That’s how it works.

You have to get a certain number of hours driving in the car and a certain amount of observing time.

When I took the class, I did nothing but driving at first just so the second half of the course I just had to sit in the back seat and pay attention.

Then after all of that you get to take the test in hopes of getting your license. This is, of course, after you pass the written portion of the test.

How much room do you need to leave for a fire hydrant? When is it safe to turn right on a red light?

All that stuff. I had done it all, now was time to get behind the wheel and show the state I deserved my license.

So, one day in 2007 I’m patiently waiting to take my mom’s minivan to the DMV for my test. The lady calls my name. She has a thick clipboard and walks out to the minivan and has me turn it on and test the lights.

But here’s the thing - one of the van’s brake lights is out. I beg the lady to write my mother a ticket, she owns the minivan, and let me take the test.

She doesn’t go for it and I’m furious with my mother.

I got my license a few weeks later. I took the test the day after a blizzard so there was no chance I would have to parallel park with six inches of snow on the side of the road.

would like to talk with you about the state of local news in the early 21st century. I promise not to be too technical or whiny. No one likes a whiner.

There is a lot of talk lately about newspapers being dead. As former newspaperman Mark Twain famously quipped “The report of my death was an exaggeration.”

Some papers are struggling, others are adapting to the changing ways people consume news.

It’s this changing landscape of news consumption that is causing problems for business models, readers and our democracy.

You will be forgiven for thinking that is a stretch, hear me out.

A survey published last week by the Pew Research Center shows that 50% of people surveyed on the large problems facing the nation feel that From the “made up news and information” is Publisher’s a very big problem in the country today. Pew studies the media and the Desk public’s perceptions of it.

Still not convinced it’s a “thing”? It ranked ahead of: violent crime (49%), climate change (46%), racism (40%), illegal immigration (38%), terrorism (34%) and sexism (26%).

We clearly have a problem and the people surveyed had a clear idea of who needs to fix it: the news media, the choice of 53% of respondents. The public at 20% was a distant second.

So, what’s the answer?

This is the place where I tell you that you need to be an investor in media. Buy a subscription in print or online and tell your friends and neighbors to do so as well. News outlets work when there is a sustainable

For decades, advertising carried the ball. Founding father Alexander Hamilton is quoted as saying “It is the advertiser who provides the paper for the subscriber. It is not to be disputed, that the publisher of a newspaper in this country, without a very exhaustive advertising support, would receive less reward for his labor than the humblest mechanic.”

Today, there are lots of ways to advertise. Newspapers and their websites deliver one of the largest audiences in our markets. We are a great way to reach readers who will love to come to your business.

Always will be.

Since Google and Facebook have a virtual and literal monopoly on much of the ad spending online, readers will be tasked with footing more of the bill as the digital age matures.

There is federal legislation that is in the works designed to help newspapers compete online with the giants. The bills want to make Google and Facebook pay for content that they have used for free. It is well intended, but I am not holding my breath in hopes that it will pass, let alone help.

Field needs to be leveled for family farmers ANNA JOHNSON POLICY MANAGER, CENTER FOR RURAL AFFAIRS

Sen. Grassley (IA) and Rep. Fortenberry (NE) are standing up for family farmers in very tough times. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced they plan to release regulations this year addressing payments to Anna Johnson family farms.

These payments offer essential support to family farmers, but current loopholes are exploited by the largest farms that sometimes receive hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars in payments.

Sen. Grassley and Rep. Fortenberry have asked USDA to make sure that only people actively engaged in farming—those with “dirt under their fingernails”—

benefit from those payments, and that USDA curbs what are effectively limitless payments to corporate farms. Most family farmers—those struggling right now with saturated fields and unplanted corn—will never be able to access the hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments that are available via loopholes to the largest operations.

The farm bill passed last year, added a requirement that USDA expands the people involved in a farm operation who are eligible for payments to include cousins, nephews, and nieces. Sen. Grassley and Rep. Fortenberry are asking that when USDA writes these regulations, they use the opportunity to strengthen requirements for farm involvement of these family members.

At a time when the playing field is tougher than has been seen in years, it is vitally important USDA enforces these requirements to make that playing field more level.

Senate passes Schachtner bill to protect Interstate Medical Licensure Bill keeps Wisconsin in compact to expedite physician licensure across states MADISON– Today (June 5), the Senate passed bipartisan legislation co-authored

by Senator Patty Schachtner (D-Somerset) to keep Wisconsin in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact.

The compact is a voluntary agreement to help expedite licensing for physicians wanting to practice in multiple states.

“It’s important that Wisconsin has enough physicians and health care professionals to meet our population’s growing health care needs,” said Senator Patty Schachtner (D-Somerset). “This bill ensures that physicians seeking to

practice in Wisconsin will continue to have a streamlined process that Patty protects Schachtner patients and reDistrict 10 duces red Senator tape.”

The bill, Senate Bill 74, eliminates a sunset provision contained in the original legislation authorizing Wisconsin’s participation in the compact.

If approved by the Assembly, the bill will bring certainty

to current and future physicians seeking to practice in Wisconsin. The proposal has bipartisan support in the Assembly and is co-sponsored by Representative Gae Magnafici (R-Dresser).

“Ultimately, this bill will help increase access to health care,” continued Schachtner (D-Somerset).

“I hope the Assembly will take up this proposal and consider additional ways to connect more people to quality, affordable health care, perhaps through expanding Medicaid.”

As smoking ban turns 10, casinos still not embracing change When then-Gov. Jim Doyle signed Wisconsin’s indoor smoking ban into law in 2009, he expected tribal nations, which were exempt from its provisions, to embrace the measure on their own.

But fast-forward 10 years and just one tribal-run casino in the state is smoke-free. That’s despite health officials highlighting a host of statistics that show the ban’s pronounced impact on public health.

Tribal casinos say they’re open to making accommodations for non-smokers, but most tribal officials remain wary of what they think their clientele’s reaction to a ban would be.

May 18 marked 10 years since Doyle signed Act 12 into law, a measure that made bars, restaurants and workplaces smoke-free.

“I think the last decade has gone really, really well,”

Doyle told WisPolitics.com recently. “I don’t think people can even imagine going back to where we were beforehand.”

Michael Fiore, founder and director of the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, pointed to everything from a 15 percent drop in adult smoking rates to public opinion polls showing broad support for the measure to a decrease in upper respiratory tract symptoms among bartenders.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and localized reports from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Center for Urban Population Health and UW-Milwaukee all report a downturn in smoking rates among adults in the state since the ban went into effect. Fiore calls that a “giant win for both individual health and public health.”

“Now, of course, one cannot say that all of this decline is a result of the smoking ban, but the smoking ban is one of the foundation stones that have contributed to declining smoking in Wisconsin,” Fiore told WisPolitics.

But Native American-run casinos have been far slower to embrace the smoke-free movement. At the time the legislation was passed, Doyle said he believed the casinos — whose tribal sovereignty exempts them from the ban — would take the measure up voluntarily.

But shortly after passing the decade mark, HoChunk Gaming Madison remains the only smoke-free casino in the state.

“I think I probably would have expected more to be honest,” Doyle said.

St. Croix tribe elects new council members Four new council members were elected by members of the St. Croix Tribe of Chippewa in their election Saturday June 8, according to the unofficial vote count.

This election comes after a report by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) put the tribe in the spotlight alleging they embezzled gaming revenue. The NIGC has recommended the tribe pay a $5 million fine.

Francis Songetay and Bill Reynolds defeated incumbents Lewis Taylor and Elmer “Jay� Emery in the Sand Lake community. Council members serve two-year terms.

Bev Benjamin defeated incumbent Crystal Peterson in Danbury. Incumbent Susan Lowe won re-election in Round Lake.

In Maple Plain Thomas Fowler defeated incumbent Joyce Long.

Taylor, Emery, Peterson were all named in the NIGC report last month.

It is unknown at this time if a recount has been requested.

The idea of a full-time assistant district attorney was met with conflicting opinions at the public safety committee meeting. District Attorney Joe Schieffer was in favor, but Clerk of Courts Jackie Baasch was not.

The Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee voted last month to fund 20 counties, including Burnett, with a full-time assistant district attorney (ADA.) The state legislature would still need to pass the measure and Gov. Tony Evers would need to sign it.

If passed, it is expected to start Oct. 1, according to state budget documents.

Baasch spoke to the effect it would have on her office. “The full-time ADA along with having the court commissioner possibly hearing cases two days a week might be tough for our office,� Baasch told the public safety committee. “That work load might become impossible to keep up with.�

Currently the Court of Courts office

is in charge of cases being worked by the DA, part-time ADA Dan Steffen and court commissioner hearings on Fridays.

She explained her staff is already stretched out very thin with their current staff and adding a full-time ADA would necessitate hiring more staff. “Then we run into the problem of, we don’t have any room for anyone else working in our offices,� Baasch said.

Schieffer said a fulltime ADA would greatly Joe Schieffer help him out. “Having a full-time ADA would give us more time to deal with cases,� Schieffer said. “Right now, we’re in ‘triage mode’ – we’re treating things as they come in and moving on to the next. This would also give us more time.

He also stated Oct. 1 just happens to be his birthday and this would be “a heck of a birthday present.�

Missy Tracy, the municipal relations coordinator for Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison, touted the 2015 move to go smoke-free and said that despite an initial dip, it’s made a positive financial impact. “We hung in there, stuck it out and shortly after the first year of being smoke-free, we started to see our revenue actually do better than where (it was) when we were a smoking facility,� she said.

According to Tracy, the Madison casino was persuaded to ban smoking after a survey of its guests showed an overwhelming majority wanted to game in a smoke-free environment. The facility is now the most profitable Ho-Chunk casino in terms of net gaming revenue.

Despite that success, a number of tribes recently told WisPolitics.com they are still reluctant to go completely smoke-free. Several noted that positive results in Madison would not necessarily translate to more rural areas of the state where the clientele has grown accustomed to smoking while gaming.

But those concerns have to be balanced with creating a comfortable environment for those who don’t smoke, according to Bobbi Webster, the director of public relations for the Oneida Nation.

Jail Administrator Mark Schmidt told the public safety committee that he was once again in the midst of the summer season up in the jail. “Right now, we have 44 inmates and by Monday I expect that will be up to 54,� Schmidt said. “This is the time of year that on the weekends the numbers continue to go up.�

“The compromise has been to create smoke-free environments within the casino so that customers have the opportunity to sit and play and entertain themselves in areas where there’s no smoking allowed,� she said.

The Oneida Nation’s casinos have installed air filtration systems to combat the smoke, and a WisPolitics.com check of tribal gaming facilities in the state shows that roughly half have followed suit and designated smoke-free areas on their gaming floors.

But Doyle said he believes those measures are more sizzle than steak. “None of that stuff ever worked,� Doyle said. “Restaurants tried to do it and others over the years and it just isn’t very effective.�

Doyle said the Tavern League of Wisconsin fought bitterly against the measure, but the organization’s executive director, Pete Madland, conceded in an interview with WisPolitics.com that his members have “adjusted and moved on.�

But Madland said at the time the legislation was passed, the Tavern League had “a lot of members have to close their doors as a result.� He noted his organization saw a drop in membership among establishments holding the wide-ranging “Class B� license. However, he could not point to data explicitly linking that decline to the smoking ban.

Siren thankful for sheriff’s office relationship

Grantsburg Family Food sold BEMIDJI, Minn.–– KJ’s of Wisconsin, Inc., announced it has entered into an agreement with SpartanNash to acquire the existing Gordy’s stores in Barron, Chetek and Cornell, Wisc. and rebrand the stores KJ’s Fresh Market. SpartanNash will continue to distribute grocery and fresh products to the three stores.

KJ’s also purchased Grantsburg Family Foods and will be rebranded as KJ’s Fresh Market.

No change for golf carts in Grantsburg The Grantsburg Village board recently received a letter from someone in the Memory Lake Campground asking if they could be allowed to drive their golf carts on all public roads.

Police Chief Jeff Schinzing explained a few years ago they changed the ordinance, so golf carts could travel from their home to the golf course and back home. He added they have not had an issue in about five years. “This started because people from the campground were leaving and going into town. Then they would come back to the campground intoxicated,� Village clerk/treasurer Sheila Meyer said. “There were also some underage people driving the golf carts around at the time.�

When asked about the policy, Schinzing said he was

in favor of sticking with their current policy.

Caylin Muehlberg pointed out the potential hazard of golf carts crossing Highway 70. “Some of those people may not have the best judgement when attempting to cross Highway 70,� Muehlberg said. “That could be a huge problem. Someone thinks they have got the time to cross and traffic is moving faster than they think.�

The board decided not to make any changes to their golf cart policy due to safety and liability concerns.

Sticking with campgrounds, the board approved to hire a surveyor to survey the airport to see if the village can go forward with their plan to put a campground at the airport.

The surveyor is supposed to cost somewhere between $1,400 and $1,500.

School board gives go ahead to begin construction on Jorgensen Youth Ballpark KAYLA CASEY SENTINEL STAFF

When Grantsburg Baseball Coach Pete Johnson came to speak with the school board members this last Monday, he had a lot of wonderful ideas to share when it comes to his dream of the Jorgensen Youth Ballpark in front of the Elementary School. Since last Fall, he has been trying to receive some funding from the Grantsburg School District to make this dream a reality.

At the meeting, Pete started off by saying that this year, kindergarten through 12th grade, he had 130 boys playing baseball with 51 home games that were scheduled. He wants to take the diamond closest to the highway at the elementary school and turn it into a showpiece for the district. He said it is the first and last thing people see when they come to our district.

Johnson said, “People driving on the highway are going to see that (the ballpark) and they’re going to remember, Grantsburg’s that place with that cool little ballpark.” This spring, there are approximately 30 fourth grade kids playing on that field, and he also wants them to have a nice field that they are proud to play on.

He started last year and received funding from the school board to place a new fence around the field. He got the fencing placed and he is ready to move on with phase two. He stated that just having that fence has made a large

difference, not just for looks, but also for the kids that play on the field. Just last week, one of the kids (from Frederic) were actually able to hit it over the fence and Johnson said, “That’s why I put a short fence. It gives them something to shoot for, and almost none of those kids will hit a homerun but every single one of them will think they can.”

Phase two of the Jorgensen Ballpark is to work on two enclosed dugouts and a small grandstand behind home plate.

On the back of the grandstand will be a large sign saying, ‘Jorgensen Park.’

Johnson brought in an estimate for the schoolboard members to look at, and hopefully approve, so he can start construction on the ballpark this July.

He admitted that the construction will be spendy, approximately $27,000 for all of the construction materials. That estimate did not include the cost of labor, however, Johnson stated that he was going for a grant outside of the school to help with the costs of labor.

After phase two, Johnson was saying that he would also like to have several more phases. He would like to eventually get a fencing façade at the top of the fence and to get an announcer’s booth set up there for the little kids’ games.

For the parents, there is a little slope behind the fence overlooking the field and he would also like to place little benches into the hillside for parents to watch their kids play ball. He said,

For the fence running along the backside of the field, Johnson would eventually like to get signage for that as well. He would want to advertise the older businesses from the area such as the Alpha Store and Jed’s Northstar.

Renee Rombach thought that it was a really cute idea to do that. Eventually, he would like to get an old face clock out in the field because every old ballpark has an old clock- he hasn’t quite figured out how to do that yet.

Johnson doesn’t just want the field to look nice for the district, he wants the kids to feel proud of their field, proud of the game and have a great atmosphere while they are playing. The schoolboard loved his plans and his dream of the ballpark; however, they do not have all of the funding necessary to completely cover phase two.

They did have a little over $15,000 that they could start Johnson off with to begin the construction. They approved the $15,640 for Johnson to purchase and start construction on the two dugouts for Jorgensen Park. As for the grandstand, Johnson stated that he could try and get additional funding elsewhere to complete that part of phase two. In July, construction of the two dugouts should begin on Jorgensen Park after the youth ballgames have ended this year.

A Town of Hayward man was charged with 10 counts of possession of child pornography.

If found guilty he faces a possible $1 million in fines and 250 years in prison.

In May, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Special Agent Jeffrey Lenzner downloaded child pornography from an IP address using undercover investigative software using a BitTorrent P2P network.

That IP address came back to the Edelweiss motel in Hayward. The owners complied with the administrative subpoena

they were issued, including guest records.

They informed Lenzner Hatcher that the only long-term tenant was staying in Unit 8.

James Allen Hatcher, 45, had been staying at the Edelweiss since October 2016.

Special Agent Lenzer got a warrant for Hatcher’s room June 5. Authorities from the DCI located a 640 GB hard drive inside a laptop computer.

A digital forensic examiner allegedly located over 180 files of child pornography on the lap-

top. Hatcher admitted he was the only one who had used the laptop.

Hatcher continued to admit to authorities he had downloaded, viewed and saved child pornography from Frostwire/ BitTorrent network onto his laptop at the motel.

Later that day, he was taken into custody and charged with ten counts of possession of child pornography. He was then transported to the Sawyer County Jail.

Each count comes with the potential of a $100,000 fine and up to 25 years in prison.

Hatcher’s preliminary hearing is set for June 17 in front of Sawyer County Judge John Yackel.

Transportation and Wisconsin’s economy

WITC offers two programs to support this growing industry Commercial truck drivers transport more than 175 million tons of goods originating in Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Transportation Center, and these goods aren’t moving themselves.

Over 31,000 individuals in Wisconsin work as truck drivers, yet this is not enough to fill the growing need for workers in this industry. The need in this industry is twofold: Wisconsin has a shortage of not only the truck drivers who are delivering goods, but also the skilled diesel technicians who can repair commercial vehicles, including agricultural commercial vehicles.

Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College recently launched two programs to address these labor shortages. Diesel equipment technician and truck driving are now accepting students for upcoming classes.

The two-year diesel equipment technician technical diploma is available at the New Richmond campus for the first year. Students will spend their second year of the program getting handson training at Hammond Truck and Trailer repair, a division of Russ Davis Wholesale.

According to Mark Wiese, manager at Hammond Truck and Trailer, “There are more trucks on the road every year. Everything you eat, wear and use gets delivered on a truck, adding more trucks on the road and a demand for more mechanics.”

The diesel equipment technician program will prepare students to service and repair diesel trucks and diesel-powered agricultural and industrial equipment. The majority of classes will be conducted in the shop where students will gain hands-on experience with diagnosing, repairing and analyzing diesel equipment.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can expect to get careers in a variety of positions such as diesel equipment technician, fleet maintenance technician, equipment mechanic and more.

“It is important for mechanics to attend school to learn the theories of operation for all components that make up a truck,” said Wiese. “It is vitally important for technicians to understand how each component works, what it does and how it works with the other components in order to diagnose and make repairs to properly keep trucks moving across the country while being safe on the road.”

WITC is also expanding the truck driving program to be offered at both Rice Lake and New Richmond campuses. This is a 10-week program that will prepare students to earn a Class A and B Commercial Driver’s License. The next section for truck driving will be offered in September. Classes are taught through classroom and behind-the-

Mary Beth Raddatz of New Richmond graduated from WITC-Rice Lake’s 10week truck driving program in March, and she passed her Class A Commercial Driver’s License test before even completing the program. Within weeks, Raddatz owned a truck and had a career hauling for local agriculture producers.

“I really had no idea there were so many options available for careers in trucking,” said Raddatz. “I have received so many employment offers.”

There is a high demand for both of these programs in Northwest Wisconsin and nationwide, and that demand is expected to grow as baby boomers retire from these industries. For truck drivers, entry-level salaries are generally in excess of $40,000 per year with potential to earn more than $60,000 per year with experience. Most employers also offer health, vacation and retirement benefits.

Diesel technicians and mechanics earn

a median of $47,000 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the job outlook is expected to increase by nine percent from 2016 to 2026.

According to Wiese, truck driving and mechanics go hand-in-hand.

“A truck driver’s livelihood is dependent on a mechanic’s livelihood,” said Wiese. “It is hard to teach a mechanic on the job that has not had schooling and those mechanics usually end up doing routine service work and repairs. There are plenty of those candidates to choose from on the market but good technical mechanics are very hard to find.”

The following is a letter I received from ADRC Nutrition program with some changes to the program: Due to the retirement of our current Meal Site Manager, Cecilia Olive, the Siren Senior Nutrition Program will be serving delivered, packaged noon meals starting Monday, June 3. All congregate meals for the Siren Senior Center will be packaged at the Webster Senior Nutrition site and delivered to Siren around 11:45 a.m.

If you are interested in a meal, please RSVP with a preferred 24-hour notice by signing up inside or calling the Webster Meal Site at 715-866-5300.

Anyone wishing to receive a fresh, non-packaged meal is welcome to visit any of our other area locations in A&H, Amery, Danbury, Hertel, Grantsburg and Milltown. Please call in advance so we can plan for your meal. There is no need to live in the area of the meal site to attend the meal.

New Bee in Denali EMILY STONE NATURALIST/EDUCATION DIRECTOR AT THE CABLE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

On one of our few sunny days in early May, I took a scenic drive to Juniper Rock Overlook on the North Country Trail, hoping to find early spring wildflowers starting to bloom. On the way, I parked at a boat landing and crossed the road to explore the haze of yellow brightening a wet ditch.

The oblong catkins of willows may not have showy petals like bloodroot or hepatica, but these flower clusters produce brightly colored pollen and abundant nectar. Most trees that produce catkins depend on wind to spread their genetic material. Aspens, poplars, birches, hazelnut, and alder are some local examples.

In contrast, some willows rely on insects for pollination, and early spring insects rely on willows for food before other flowers become abundant. I was pleased to see that several orange-belted bumble bees were foraging on the willows. These queens had survived the winter, emerged from the ground, and were gathering resources to start their colony.

Willow and bees go well together all over the world. Last June I went looking for bees among the 17 species of willows in Denali National Park, Alaska. Having just built the Museum’s 2018 “Bee Amazed” exhibit, I had bees on the brain. So, I signed up for the “Insects of Denali” field course run by Alaska Geographic. In contrast to my sunny hike up Juniper Rock, the late June weather in Denali was damp and cold.

One of the instructors, Jessica Rykken, is Denali National Park’s official entomologist.

She is charged with surveying, collecting and archiving insects.

Jessica brought our small group of teachers, citizen scientists, and naturalists to a few of the plots her research team, including University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student Adam Haberksi, set up to study “patterns of arthropod diversity across habitat type and along elevational gradients in Denali National Park.” This work will be the basis of Adam’s Master’s thesis.

Next to a sophisticated data logger that records the air temperature at regular intervals, each insect plot had a smattering of blue, yellow, and white plastic cups held aloft on wire stands. I often chuckle at the juxtaposition of highly technical and homemade gear that scientists use.

The cups were filled with propylene glycol, a syrupy food additive that preserves any insects that meet their demise.

Jessica showed us how to collect insects by pouring the bug soup we found in the traps through little tea strainers. We topped off the cups with more

propylene glycol from a jug before placing them back in the stands.

The soggy insects were dumped unceremoniously into carefully labeled sample bottles for processing back at the lab. Although the insects looked like little drowned rats, a few of them could be identified as bumble bees based on their large size and furriness. Between Jessica’s work and that of earlier scientists, 17 species of bumble bees have been recorded in Denali National Park. That’s more than one-third of the bumble bee species in all of North America!

Since the hotbed for bumble bee diversity lies in the rugged terrain of the Himalayas and Alps, it’s no surprise that they can thrive in Alaska (and northern Wisconsin!), too. Their ability to produce heat through shivering,

course, gives each specimen a barcode before carefully storing them in state-of-the-art cabinets.

While Derek, a beetle specialist, would need a few extra lifetimes to study the collection’s almost 2 million specimens, he often fills requests from other researchers.

Several years ago, Paul Williams, a bumble bee expert at the Natural History Museum in London, noticed that some of the specimens of Bombus neoboreus he was looking at didn’t match up. After sequencing their DNA, Williams put out a request for curators to send him more specimens identified as this black-tailed species of bumble bee. Derek mailed him all of the B. neoboreus from 2012, Jessica’s first summer of research in Denali.

combined with a large body size and a thick coat of hairs to retain that heat, gives bumble bees an adaptive edge in cold places.

Their warm fur looks pretty sad when it’s covered in syrup, though. In order to get her bee specimens looking spiffy (and identifiable) again, Jessica and some graduate students put the bees into Mason jars with warm water and a dab of Dawn dish soap. After about a minute of shaking, the bees are clean and amazingly unharmed. Jessica rinses them, drains off the liquid, and points a regular old hair dryer into the jar to reinstate their natural, fluffy condition.

After a morning on the mountainside in a cold drizzle, our field course might have appreciated the same treatment. Instead, we hiked higher up into the tundra on Primrose Ridge and checked more of Jessica’s insect traps until the sun finally came out.

Once the bee specimens are dry, they are pinned into cases and brought to the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Derek Sikes, the Curator of Insects and the other instructor on our field

painstaking morphological measurements, Williams identified three of Jessica’s bees as an entirely new species: Bombus kluanensis. Williams named it after Kluane National Park in Canada, which abuts Alaska and is the only other area where it’s been found so far. The first specimens were collected there in the 1970s but were also misidentified as B. neoboreus. Before this discovery, it had been almost 90 years since a new species of bumble bee was discovered in North America.

Jessica told us this story on the tundra-covered slopes of Primrose Ridge where she’d collected those three specimens of the new species.

From data loggers to plastic cups, from dish soap and hair dryers to barcoded specimen cabinets, and from DNA sequencing to soggy researchers slogging through willows, I love the way that science can be both fancy and folksy. It reminds me a little of the contrast between the bloodroot’s showy flowers and the modest catkins on willows.

Both are important parts of the spring woods. All of these are good for bees.

Chenal honored at Wisconsin Sports Awards Grantsburg Alumni Leo Chenal added another high school honor to his shelf by winning High School Athlete of the Year at the Wisconsin Sports Awards.

Chenal will be a freshman for the Wisconsin Badgers football team next year.

He was named 2018 Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the year and a first-team All-American by MaxPreps.

He ran 194 times for 2,038 yards and 42 touchdowns. Chenal also caught 12 passes for 226 years and three touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball he led the Grantsburg Pirates with 120 tackles, seven for loss, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and a sack.

Chenal enrolled early at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and participated in spring practices. He will play linebacker for the Badgers in the fall.

Jared Lee finishes at State Golf MADISON––Grantsburg's Jared Lee carded an 88 and a 47 (135) in his two day trip to the State Golf meet in the state capital on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

He finished in a tie for 26th place amongst 50-some golfers.

Drake Wilcox of Sheboygan AL was the medalist, recording a 70 and 39 (109).

Grantsburg Clay Target Shooting team heading to Nationals GLEN SKIFSTAD SENTINEL SPORTS

GRANTSBURG––Members of the Grantsburg Clay Target Shooting Team will be heading to Michigan for the National Championships due to a stellar performance at the State competition in Rome (rural Nekoosa) Wisconsin last weekend.

Grace Covey was the number one shooter in the High Gun-Varsity-Female division with a score of 99 out of 100.

Hunter Knotwell of Lancaster was first in the High Gun-Varsity-Male division and he was first overall (male and female) with Grace coming in second place.

Other members of the Grantsburg Varsity team include Charlie Ambelang, Carter Johnson, Trenton Johnson, and Mathew Kottke. Junior Varsity members are Zachary Carlson, Jordan Janes, Tyler Java, Micah Jensen, Hailey Martini, Logan Smestad and Katie Stout.

Siren High School also had participants in the contest. They are Russell Cook and Andrew Gorr (Varsity) and Levi Hayman and Derek Thiex (Junior Varsity). Cook was tied for 15th place in the Varsity Male Division.

July 10-14, 2019, at the MTA Home grounds in Mason, Michigan, over 2,000 of the nation’s best youth clay target student athletes will compete for the title of National Champion.

WEBSTER––If you are reading this on Wednesday, the Tigers will have played their first game at the State Tournament against Athens.

If this is Thursday, a number of things may have happened.

In any event, Webster is at the WIAA State Tournament for the third year running, hoping to come home with a second State plaque.

According to the WIAA website, “Webster makes its third straight State appearance by moving back down a division after moving up to Division 3 last season to win the State championship. The first time the Tigers’ qualified for the State Tournament was in Division 4 in 2017, which resulted in a loss in the semifinals. This season, they pummeled Thorp 14-0 in the Shell Lake Sectional final to earn their return to State. They are the champions of the West Division of the Lakeland Conference this season.”

Carsen Stenberg had 27 walks, Brad Sigfrids had been hit by a pitch eight times, and Jack Washburn had 22 stolen bases.

Packers looking to find offensive options in passing game GREEN BAY— For most of his career, Aaron Rodgers has had plenty of good options at receiver.

However, after going from Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, James Jones and Jordy Nelson at the start of his tenure as the Green Bay Packers’ starting quarterback to Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams in recent years, Rodgers has only Adams and uncertainty as he gets ready for his 12th season as the starter.

Last season, following the release of Nelson and Cobb’s injury issues, Adams was targeted 169 times by Packers quarterbacks. That was 80 more targets than any other Packers player and only one less than Julio Jones’ league-leading total with Atlanta.

Rodgers didn’t think that was an unhealthy way to run an offense.

Quite the opposite.

“I’d like to throw to Davante more.

He’s that open,” Rodgers said after Tuesday’s organized team activities, the eighth of 10 this offseason.

“We’ve got to keep finding ways to get him the ball. There’s nothing wrong with having a go-to guy who’s that dynamic and trying to find ways to get him the ball.”

Still, the Packers need more than two-time Pro Bowler Adams to drive the passing game. That was supposed to be tight end Jimmy Graham’s role last season. While Graham had a decent season with 55 catches, he scored only two touchdowns.

With Cobb missing seven games and Geronimo Allison missing the final 11 games after a hot start, Rod-

gers was forced to lean on rookie receivers Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown. Their inconsistencies mirrored those of the offense as a whole.

Cobb signed with Dallas in the offseason, but Allison and second-year receivers Valdes-Scantling, St. Brown, J’Mon Moore and Jake Kumerow are back and vying for a spot in the lineup opposite Adams.

“I think obviously we need complementary pieces in place,” Rodgers said. “I think Marquez has had a fantastic spring and really stepped up as a guy who can be an every-down player, and then I expect a big bounce-back year from Jimmy. He’s healthy, he’s feeling good. This offense, I think fits him and his body type, but I’m not going to shy away from throwing the ball to Davante.”

Graham had one of the big plays of the day, with a fingertip catch of a deep seam pass from Rodgers. The Packers hoped to get those potent plays from Graham last season, when they signed him to a threeyear, $30 million contract. Instead, he had zero receptions of more than 25 yards over the final 10 games.

“It’s important for both of us,” Rodgers said. “Coming off last season, it’s important to get him going and feeling comfortable in this offense. I think this offense sets up really good for him. It gives him opportunities to win with his routes and, in situations like that, to win with his athletic ability and speed.

He has a tremendous catch radius, which you saw on that play, because the ball was pretty inside. He made

a great catch on that.”

Notably, the big play came shortly after Graham dropped a pass in a red zone drill. Mistakes happen, first-year coach Matt LaFleur said.

Bouncing back from those mistakes is the key.

“I think Jimmy’s a pro,” LaFleur said. “He’s a perfectionist, too, and he gets down on himself when he doesn’t do it the right way. And that’s one thing I challenged him (on). `Hey, listen, you’re out here learning. Mistakes are going to happen. When they happen, everybody’s looking at you. You can’t blink.’

“And I just want him to keep a positive outlook, whether he’s making a great play or he has to have a learning experience from not doing something quite right.

But I’m really excited about him. I think he brings a lot of that veteran presence, especially to that room.”

Notes: Coach Matt LaFleur spent most of practice riding around in a golf cart after tearing the Achilles tendon in his left leg last week. “I know I’m supposed to be off it for the next four weeks or so,” he said.

“Hopefully I’ll be back at least in a walking boot by training camp.

And then it just depends. Even in the boot prior to the surgery, you can’t get around the field as well as you’d like to. But I’m definitely not going to let it creep in and create negative thoughts in my mind.” ...

The Tigers will have faced the Athens Fighting Blue Jays at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The Blue Jays return to the tournament field comes following a 5-3 victory over Gibraltar/Washington Island in the sectional final held at Crivitz. The Fighting Blue Jays are the champions in the North Division of the Marawood Conference this year.

In the other Division 4 semi final game, Mineral Point will face off with Belmont.

The winners of the two games will meet in the Championship game on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.

Rice Lake Speedway makes schedule adjustment; welcomes Advantage RV Mods ED REICHERT

RICE LAKE––Due to repeated requests from drivers and fans, the Rice Lake Speedway has made an addition to its racing program for June 22. The Advantage RV Modified Series will be visiting the track on that night and the original schedule had both the Street Stocks and Midwest Modifieds off that night. However, the track owners, Dave Adams and Mitch Hansen, have now decided to add both classes to the program on that night which will now be a full five class program as the Super Stocks and Pure Stocks were already scheduled to appear that night.

The Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks are now slated to race for both track and national points on that night while the Modifieds will be racing for national points only.

“With all the rain outs and the late start to our season, we hate to have any class sitting on the sidelines on a Saturday,” stated track co-owner Dave Adams. “There is much interest by drivers in those two classes racing on that night so we felt it only fair to let them run a full program also.”

This will provide fans with a full evening's worth of entertainment as the Advantage RV Mod Tour will bring about thirty or more of the finest Modified drivers from the upper Midwest and Canada including defending champion and current point leader Dan Ebert of Lake Shore MN to the track, racing for the $1,500 top prize that night along with points toward the RV point title.

But before the RV Mod program, the speedway will host its annual Kid's Night event on June 15 with the chance for the kids to meet the drivers on the front stretch before the racing program begins and the well known bike giveaway night will see five or six dozen donated bikes given away to the kids in attendance.

A recent study from the U.K. suggests that gum disease could potentially be a contributing factor to Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The study found that people with gum disease had a six-fold increase in the rate of their congnitive decline. Marilyn Lee Kallman

LaVerne Leep

Marilyn Lee Kallman, age 773, of Grantsburg, passed a away March 24, 2019, at C Casa De La Luz Hospice C Center in Tucson, AZ, after a 13-year battle with Renal C Cell Carcinoma. Her loving h husband, Lloyd, was by her sside.

Marilyn was born March 88, 1946, in Eureka Township tto Lorraine Horner and T Tom Kelley. At an early age, she was adopted by Donald and Pearl Bain, and they moved to Colorado, then New Mexico, and eventually ended up in South Pasadena, CA. Marilyn lived in California until her senior year of high school when the family moved back to Grantsburg.

Marilyn married Lloyd Kallman July 4, 1964, in a little church in North Branch, MN. Lloyd was her husband and best friend for nearly 55 years. From their marriage came a daughter, Kimberly and a son, Kenneth. Marilyn was a graduate of Grantsburg High School in 1964, and then graduated as an LPN in 1972 from Superior Technical College. She worked at St. Croix Regional Hospital in St. Croix Falls, WI. Marilyn loved her horses. She bought her first Appaloosa in the late 60s and still owned an Appaloosa at the time of her passing. During her showing career, Marilyn won numerous high point and regional awards, which included High Point in the National Appaloosa Trail Horse and Canadian National Appaloosa Showmanship. In later years, she enjoyed knitting, photography, and supporting and participating in the Diabetes Bicycle Rides.

Thanks to the generosity of Mike and Jennifer Isaac, who for many years provided a home for Marilyn and Lloyd in Arizona during the winter months, Marilyn and Lloyd were able to escape the cold winters in Wisconsin, and spend time with their Arizona friends during her illness.

Her granddaughter, and only grandchild, Paige, was her greatest joy. Marilyn loved watching Paige sing in the choir, play drums in the band, play hockey in a cold ice rink, and show Grandma’s horses all summer long. They enjoyed numerous travels together. Their favorite trips included the Redwood Forest in California and the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Later in life, Marilyn was reunited with her birth parents, and they continued their relationships for the remainder of their lives.

Marilyn’s strong faith in God, as well as the love and support of her friends at Bethany Lutheran Church, Pastor Jay, and the prayers from friends and family were great reassurance that God would be by her side throughout her illness.

Marilyn and I would like to thank the doctors and nurses from Saint Croix Valley Medical Center and University of Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson for caring for Marilyn during her 13-year battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Pearl Bain, biological parents Lorraine Nelson and Tom Kelley, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Anne and Donald Kallman, sister-in-law, Kay Kallman, and several friends from the Affirming Life (cancer) Support Group.

Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Lloyd; daughter, Kimberly Johnson (Jim), son, Kenneth Kallman (Helen); granddaughter, Paige Johnson; siblings, Beverly Finch-Trebatowski, Connie Rickard (John), Rick Nelson (Romey), Teresa Hartlep (Jesse), Roberta Morrow (Ron), Katherine Kelley, Paul Kelley (Lynne), Daniel Kelley, Brandan Ballou, brother-inlaw, David Kallman; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service for Marilyn will be held Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church in Grantsburg. Pastor Jay Ticknor will be officiating.

LaVerne Leep was born J June, 22, 1925 in rural Frede eric, to Alfred and Edith ((Ferdig) Gustafson. The ffamily lived and farmed tthere until 1942. LaVerne a attended Frederic school, g graduating in May 1943.

S She then joined the family iin Portland, Oregon workiing in the shipyards for the d defense-war effort.

She met and married Pat Jarvis, they had three children: Diane, Carol and Michael. LaVerne and children moved back to the Frederic area in 1947. She and the children lived with Alfred and helped with the farming. During this time, she also was a 4-H leader for 10 years and (den) mother with the girls Home Ec. programs.

She married Claude Leep in 1961 and they moved to the Lewis home in May 1965. Laverne continued with her volunteer work several more years with the 4-H and she was the first treasurer with the VFW Auxiliary when it was formed with VFW 10232. She was treasurer for 14 years. Claude was a charter member of Post 10232. LaVerne was also a member of the Good Cheer Club, a rural group of ladies. The club was formed in the fall of 1929. LaVerne held many officers’ positions through the years.

LaVerne also followed the Ferdig ladies with her sewing, knitting, crocheting and all kinds of crafts.

She also loved working outside in her yard and flower and vegetable gardens along with the holiday decorating. In later years she was also an avid reader. After her Mother entered the Frederic nursing home, she was involved there as a volunteer with craft activities and visiting with the residents.

She traveled with Claude after the kids were on their own, with his job. They lived in Sauk Center,

They made many trips visiting Claude’s family in Seattle and LaVerne’s family in the Portland area. After Claude’s death in January 1984, LaVerne got involved with church activities in the Lewis Methodist Church. She also started painting ceramics.

She bought her first computer in 2005 and spent her last years enjoying keeping in touch with friends and family on Facebook.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Edith and Alfred; husband, Claude; son, Michael; brother-in-law, William Potter; and nephew, Ronald Potter.

She is survived by her sister, Elsie Potter; daughter, Diane (Ron) Ackland; daughter, Carol (Lee) Mangelsen; sister-in-law, Verla Britt; grandchildren, Stacy (Curt) Berry, Skylar (Barb) Ackland, Jenny (Krist) Midbrod, Thomas (Lisa) Mangelsen, Patrick (Stacy) Jarvis, Amy (Marc) Shatswell, Amber Berklund, Adam Berklund; great-grandchildren, Jayme Sparby, Jill McEdward, Miranda Berry, Jordan Jacobson, John Hostak, Stephanie Jarvis, Michael Jarvis, Ryan Shatswell, Kaitlyn Shatswell, Ethan Midbrod, Emelia Midbrod; great-great-granddaughter, Raelyn Sparby; niece, Connie Colten; nephew, Charles (Peggi) Potter.

Arrest in 43-year-old murder case stuns Wisconsin town IVAN MORENO ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAKEWOOD— Word of the arrest — via a friend’s text message — hit Wayne Sankey like a thunderbolt.

“I said, ‘You gotta be kidding me,’” Sankey recalled.

“And then I told the wife and she couldn’t believe it.

‘There’s no way,’ she said. ‘Ray down the road?’”

Ray Vannieuwenhoven was his next-door neighbor — a helpful, 82-year-old handyman with a gravelly voice and a loud, distinctive laugh.

The widower and father of five grown children had lived quietly for two decades among the 800 residents of Lakewood, a northern Wisconsin town.

Now authorities were saying he was a killer. They had used genetic genealogy to crack a cold case that stretched back well into the 20th century — a double murder 25 miles southwest of Lakewood.

For nearly 43 years, Vannieuwenhoven had lived in plain sight, yet outside detectives’ radar.

It was just too much to be believed. Was the guy next door really a monster?

David Schuldes and Ellen Matheys, engaged to be married, set up their campsite at a secluded spot in McClintock Park on Friday afternoon, July 9, 1976.

It appeared they were alone.

Two shots from a .30-caliber rifle shattered the quiet. One bullet struck Schuldes’ neck from 50 feet away, killing him instantly. The other bullet lodged in the wall of the bathroom Matheys was using while Schuldes waited outside.

Matheys ran, with the killer in pursuit, investigators say. He caught and raped her, then shot her twice in the chest. Her body was found 200 yards (182 meters) from where Schuldes lay.

Investigators were stumped: They didn’t know why the couple was targeted, the killer took no money, and leads were scant.

DNA profiling in the ’90s brought new hope, but detectives got no matches when they submitted the

semen from Matheys’ shorts to the FBI’s national database.

Then last year, detectives contacted Virginia-based Parabon NanoLabs, a DNA technology company whose work with genetic genealogy analysis has helped police identify 55 suspects in cold cases nationwide since May 2018, according to the company. Parabon uploads DNA from crime scenes to GEDmatch, a free, public genealogy database with about 1.2 million profiles, all voluntarily submitted by people who’ve used consumer genealogy sites.

California law enforcement used GEDmatch to capture the suspected Golden State Killer last year by finding distant relatives and reverse-engineering his family tree.

Using that technique, Parabon’s experts concluded in December that Vannieuwenhoven’s parents had lived in the Green Bay area. Now detectives needed DNA samples from Vannieuwenhoven and his three brothers. Two were ruled out with DNA samples collected from one brother’s trash and another’s used coffee cup.

On March 6, two sheriff’s deputies knocked on Vannieuwenhoven’s door, asking him to fill out a brief survey on area-policing. They told him to put the survey in an envelope and seal it with his tongue.

Detectives didn’t need to visit the fourth brother.

Eight days later, Vannieuwenhoven was in custody.

At Vannieuwenhoven’s first court appearance, on March 22, bond was set at $1 million.

“Not guilty, not guilty, not guilty,” Vannieuwenhoven said, when the judge asked him if he understood the charges. His next court date is June 19.

Kurt Schuldes, 68, a cousin of David Schuldes in Green Bay, welcomed the news of an arrest, but lamented the time it took: “He just got away with it for way too long, unfortunately.”

“It was a long time coming,” said Cynthia Chizek, Matheys’ 53-year-old niece, who lives in Henderson, Nevada. “It’s just something that always hangs over

your head, knowing that there’s someone out there who did this heinous crime.”

Prosecutors and Lakewood residents, meanwhile, were left with the question: Who is Raymand Lawrence Vannieuwenhoven?

Richard Leurquin, twin brother of Vannieuwenhoven’s dead wife, Rita, said his brother-in-law was “a very loving father to his wife and kids.” He’s convinced Vannieuwenhoven is innocent.

After Rita died in 2008, Sankey said Vannieuwenhoven spent his days fishing, hunting, and going on weeks-long camping trips.

But Vannieuwenhoven had a dark side and has been jailed before.

In 1957, already married and going by the name Lawrence Vannieuwenhoven, he received a six-month sentence for an unprovoked attack on a 17-yearold girl. She was walking with three friends when Vannieuwenhoven struck her on the back, face, and shoulder.

In 1960, he pleaded guilty to not providing financial support to his wife and their 1-year-old daughter, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported then. He was on probation for a year.

More recently, some neighbors caught glimpses of a menacing side when he drank. He stopped only a few years ago, for his health, they said.

“I know this much — when he was drinking he was one son of a bitch,” said Fred Mason, 66, who works at the town dump where Vannieuwenhoven was seen frequently, rummaging through scrap piles.

Robert Ganzell, 86, and his wife sometimes dined out with Vannieuwenhoven. He heard from others that he had a temper when he drank, but Ganzell said he never witnessed it.

Sankey, 68, said he and his wife are still coming to terms with the allegations against their neighbor.

“People had the impression that he was a very good, normal person, just a retired guy,” Sankey said.

Our Father, God This Sunday we will celebrate Father’s Day. Fathers all across America will be recognized by their children. Their children will give them special gifts and tell them how much they love them. Fathers will also tell their children how much they are loved. It is a great day for us to recognize our fathers and let them know how much they are loved and appreciated.

We also have another Father, a Heavenly Father, who created us and who loves us. He gave us life and without Him none of us would be here. Without Him there would be no world, no universe, no creation, nothing. However, Pastor Emory L. Johnson most of us do not often take the time to stop and New Hope Lutheran Church really think about who God is, the Creator of all that exists, and who we are simply by the

fact that God is our Father In the Bible, Matthew Chapter 6, Jesus tells us that our Father is God. He gave us a pattern for prayer and tells us to recognize God as our Father by beginning the Lord’s Prayer like this, “Our Father who art in Heaven,� In other words Jesus is telling you and me that God is our Father.

In many other Gospel passages Jesus also tells us that God is our Heavenly Father and we are His children. If Jesus is telling us that God is our Father and we are His children then we must be pretty special to Him, just like their children are pretty precious to most earthly fathers.

tance to their children when they die. They often leave them their home and their possessions. God has given an inheritance to His children too. It is called Heaven. You see, Jesus died on the cross and paid the price for us to inherit Heaven. But Jesus also rose from the dead on that Resurrection Sunday morning. He is alive. All we need to do is to accept that fact and accept Jesus as our Savior. Then we will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Someday we will rise from the dead, just like Jesus did, and we will live with Him, with all those who believe in Him, and with our Father God for all eternity. The Grantsburg library is home to a new and improved children’s play area. They will now have gross motor skill toys and STEM oriented materials in the library.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday morning, the kids had to be reminded it was a special day and not to just run into the library and start playing right away. Library Director Kristina Kelley-Johnson spoke for a few minutes and then Caylin Muehlberg, Cathy McCabe and Sara Christopherson joined her in cutting the ribbon and officially opened up the new creative learning space for the kids to enjoy.

“STEM learning is important in our community because of the many manufacturing jobs in the area.” said Kelley-Johnson. “Our library can help children grow preliteracy skills and prepare them for the STEM learning they need to become school-ready.”

She added these materials can help students avoid the learning drop that often occurs over the summer.

“Our toy selection had gotten a lot of wear and tear over the years,” Kelley-Johnson said.
