The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation was involved in the investigation that lead to a Grantsburg man being charged with eight felony counts surrounding an investigation in the production of child pornography.

Johnny L. Massey Jr., 34, Grantsburg, has been charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child, two felony counts of invasion of privaMassey cy with a surveillance device (victim under 18), two counts of post or publish a depiction of person without consent (victim under 18) and two counts of possession of child pornography.

All charges come with a repeater modification since Massey was convicted for possession of methamphetamine in Burnett County from 2012.

is due in large part to its high-impact experiential programming. They have implemented a powerful therapeutic arts program, InANewLight, emphasizing skilled expressive arts training and nature immersion, ultimately empowering their residents to redefine themselves by their strengths and talents.

When Northwest Passage’s kids are empowered to discover their passions and connect to others, they achieve more than healing, they thrive. Likewise, in order for a community to thrive, its citizens must have places to explore their passions and connect to others. Fueled by this vision for a deeply connected, vibrant, thriving community, plans evolved for a major expansion of the InANewLight Gallery. Developed in partnership with the Burnett Area Arts Group (BAAG), the Northwest Passage Gallery will feature additional gallery space to display residents’ photography as well as the work of other artists. Multiple studios will provide local artists with space to work and teach. Assembly and classroom spaces will allow for exhibitions, meetings, workshops, conferences, and other community events.

Construction is scheduled for completion in March, with a grand opening event being planned for early spring. The Northwest Passage Gallery will help build a more connected and thriving community, where every citizen can re-define themselves by their passions and strengths, just as Northwest Passage’s youth have done for over 40 years.

This project is being funded solely through grants and private donations. have been in the top 10 every year over the last five years.

“We were number five in 2016, then number seven in 2017,” Smoliak said. “Then we were number six in 2018 and received the honor of number two across the country in 2019.”

That’s the second seller out of almost 400 dealers nationwide. The top dealer is in Kaukauna, Wisc. near Lake Winnebago and Lake Michigan.

Smoliak and Chris Kuehn bought Boone Docks in 2016 from TJ Swanson when the business was named TJs Marine.

“The first year we were still learning through stuff,” Kuehn said. “Now, we’re in year five and we’ve got confidence and community support.”

Boone Docks, 25208 State Highway 35, is often seen throughout the community at various events.

“We’re in the parades up here,” Smoliak said. “The Siren and Webb Lake St Patrick’s Day Parades are always a lot of fun, we pull a new pontoon through the parade and toss candy and beads.”

Kuehn and Smoliak were both working corporate jobs in the Twin Cities before opening Boone Docks, a play on words after their friends joked that Siren was in the middle of nowhere.

“We were just sick of working our corporate jobs,” Smoliak said. Kuehn had been coming to the area for over 20 years so it was the perfect place for the couple to relocate.

In their first year, an older man came in with his Johnson motor and wanted a new one.

“This 80-year-old gentleman comes in and says, ‘I’m tired of pulling on my Johnson.’ So we went and printed these,” Smoliak says as she hands over a can koozie with the phrase ‘Tired of pulling on your Johnson?’ on it.

They have a great relationship with their customers regardless of if they are locals or coming up from Iowa for the weekend.

Boone Docks sells Honda and Suzuki motors, “because those are just really good motors,” Kuehn said.

Next up for Boone Docks is updating their showroom. Smoliak explains they are in the process of having the showroom insulated.

“When it’s done we’ll have a number of our pontoons in here,” she explains. “Then we’ll have our retail section over there and we’ve got some other plans too for the future.”

bathrooms of two separate residences in Burnett County Wisconsin. The camera was set up in order to secretly capture or create a video image of a child or children without clothes.” Authorities believe this was going on between May 1 and December 19, 2019.

According to the criminal complaint, Special Agent Theodore Indermuehle interviewed a woman who had knowledge of the investigation “into the production of child pornography.”

This woman was contacted by another person saying they found a cell phone with photos of the

woman on it.

The woman said it was not her in the video but did recognize the people on the phone. This person alleged that Massey offered them a $10,000 ring in exchange for giving the phone back.

‘The camera was set up in order to secretly capture or create a video image of a child or children without clothes.’

She told investigators the video that had been recorded from under the door and recorded someone in

the shower.

The video allegedly showed a juvenile female using the shower and a juvenile male using the toilet.

Massey is currently being held on a $10,000 bond. His attorney argued to have it dropped down to $1,000 at his initial appearance earlier this month Burnett County District Attorney James Rennicke argued against changing the bond amount and the Court decided to not modify his bond amount.

Online records show he is being housed in the Barron County Jail and is scheduled to have his preliminary hearing Jan. 22.

There’s a Simpson episode for everything “In the year 3535 / Ain’t gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies / Everything you think, do and say / Is in the pill you took today” lyric, “In the Year 2525” Zagar and Evans, 1969 am not a fan of random speculation pertaining to the future. I prefer history (written mostly by the winners) over speculating on the future.

My boss often explains his thoughts on the future and his affinity for flying cars.

“They promised us flying cars, Jonathan,” he has explained to me on numerous occasions. “It was on the Jetsons and we were promised these things.”

“Where are the flying cars?”

What a wonderful question.

When I was young there were a few things I was hopeful for in the Sentinel future; flying and driverless cars, eating a single pill and being satEditor isfied as if you ate an entire meal, Jonathan Richie and communicating with animals.

This is what I was hoping for by the time I was an adult. I am now (checks watch) an adult and these things have not yet arrived on my doorstep.

Most of my hypotheses centered around episodes of TV, like “The Simpsons.”

There’s an episode of the show where Homer Simpson becomes a truck driver after a steak eating contest ends with the death of a trucker. Homer takes over the dead trucker’s delivery and he falls asleep and the truck drives itself until he wakes up in the morning.

Funny side note – my brothers and I love this episode. There is one scene where Homer buys pep pills, sleeping pills and gummy bears at a store. He is driving down the road when the sleeping pills begin to take over and he gets drowsy, but then the pep pills perk him back up again. The pep pills keep him awake and the sleeping ones don’t and in this scene he goes back and forth until he eventually falls asleep at the wheel.

Later in the episode Homer and his son, Bart, are lounging on the hood of a semi-truck while it was speeding down the freeway. Then Homer yells at worried drivers on the road that the truck is, in fact, driving itself. This enrages the other truck drivers and the episode concludes with a showdown between Homer and the truckers.

So, for years I thought it was great to have cars that drive themselves until you realize that a machine is in total control as you go speeding down the highway with limited or no control of the vehicle.

What do young people now think about the future? What do you think about the future?

Is it flying cars they’ll be interested in? Or is it simpler than that, like kids just wanting clean air and water when they grow up?

In the immediate future I’d like some more rain to fall on Australia to stop the rampant wildfires that have killed up to one billion animals.

ell, we are on the back side of January now.

February and Ground Hog’s Day are coming up, the days are getting longer and we can now dare to dream of spring.

OK, after getting hammered by snow and cold last weekend, the groundhog is going to have to jackhammer the opening to his home to make his appearance Feb. 2.

Yes, it’s the time of year when we retreat to our homes, ice arenas and gymnasiums to find diversions. Cabin fever is beginning to be a thing in some households.

For me, I usually begin to think very random thoughts. Some of these From the Publisher’s make their way into columns, others are better left unsaid.

Desk My late mother was a fan of my column. I think it’s an unwritten Tom Stangl law that moms need to be proud of h we d what do, b but after her passing I found a scrapbook where she had clipped my columns out and pasted them in the book. I was very touched by the gesture.

My sisters have encouraged me as well, giving me ideas. My sister Cathie found the following on social media and gave it to me. I think many of you can relate to some or all of these.

The Burnett County Sentinel was the county’s first newspaper when Matthew Westcott began publishing on Feb. 19, 1875. The Sentinel continued weekly until its building and presses were destroyed by fire in 1909. The business was sold to its competitor. The Journal changed its name to “Journal and Sentinel”, but later reverted to the Journal of Burnett County. When the Journal folded in 1962, Wilbur A. Nelson revived the Burnett County Sentinel. Following his death in 1975, his wife, Marjorie Nelson and son, Gary Nelson operated it until Feb. 1, 1994, when it was purchased by Mainstream Publications. It was then purchased by Eugene Johnson on Dec. 1, 1998.

Democratic Party’s focus in Wisconsin goes beyond Milwaukee Democratic National Convention Committee CEO Joe Solmonese told an audience of journalists in Milwaukee recently that the Democratic Party aims to correct the errors that led to President Trump’s win in 2016.

“We fell short in 2016, and while you can’t boil the outcome of any election down to one cause, one of the errors that we made was failing to communicate effectively as we could in key states,” Solmonese said Jan. 7 during a panel discussion with Gov. Tony Evers, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski.

The panel discussion came a week before President Trump was scheduled to host a rally in Milwaukee.

Solmonese said at this stage, organizers are getting out into Wisconsin communities “to make sure more communities of every background feel included, seen and heard.”

“We’re making it a priority to get out across the state, into Wisconsin communities, getting to know the people, listening to their stories and making sure that our convention reflects what they want to see and what they want to hear,” he said.

He said the July 2020 convention “is less about spectacle and more about substance.”

“When we bring the eyes of the world to Wisconsin, we’re going to remind the American people what Democrats stand for, from affordable health care to higher wages to common-sense gun reform,” Solmonese said. “And if we pull that off, I am confident that we will win in November.”

Evers said he believes Wisconsin will

be the state that elects the next president and he wants to make sure each candidate gets a chance to share their ideas with Wisconsin voters.

He said the convention will serve as a window to the state.

“We have very few chances to talk about what a great state this is,” Evers said. “From my vantage point as governor, we need to make sure we tell a good story about Wisconsin.”

Barnes said the Democratic Party “can no longer take states like Wisconsin for granted.”

He noted his and Evers’ efforts to get around the state during the 2018 election to hear from voters.

“In 2018, we made sure that we had those conversations,” Barnes said.

“That’s why we were able to drive historic midterm turnout. Now we know we need to have historic turnout in the presidential election in order for us to be successful.”

And he said there is still an opportunity for growth for Democrats in Wisconsin.

“People need to know that you care about them because for far too long people have been ignored,” Barnes said.

“And that’s why the 2016 election ended the way that it did, largely. ” Godlewski said as she travels the state, she hears a theme of economic insecurity, from people struggling with paying off student loans to preparing for retirement.

“They’re not looking for a free ride, but they’re looking for a way in which they can have a good, quality middle-class lifestyle,” Godlewski said.

“And I think what they will see is

As a former resort owner, I am well aware of the climate change risks to the tourism industry in northern Wisconsin. A warming climate is bad for business.

But there is hope. In January, 2019 over 3,500 Economist signed a letter in the Wall Street Journal with recommendations for addressing the climate crisis.

Their recommendations are mirrored in a bipartisan bill in Congress called the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. It gives me hope because this bill is: economical sound; effective, reducing CO2 emissions 90% by 2050; good for people’s health and the economy since less fossil fuel pollution means fewer trips to the doctor and ER, reduced asthma cases, and thousands fewer premature deaths per year from dirty air. The Energy Innovation Act is also fair because every citizen receives an equal dividend check each month to protect them from higher energy costs, a key element for the economists. In this part of the state, where we have many lower income families, they will come out ahead with extra money in their pockets because they have a smaller carbon footprint. As we transition to renewable energy, our climate can stabilize, our environment heal, and the world become safer. There are so many good reasons to support the Energy Innovation Act. But the biggest reason: this legislation is the best hope for all grandchildren who deserve to inherit a healthy climate and safer world.

In response to the media walkthrough, Trump Victory spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the convention will demonstrate why Trump won Wisconsin.

“From abolishing all private health insurance which would eliminate over 3.5 million Wisconsinites’ private plans, to tearing down border walls, to eliminating all fossil fuels costing nearly 100,000 Wisconsinites their jobs, the Democrats’ flashy media tour cannot hide that their radical policy proposals are wrong for Wisconsin,” Kelly said in a statement. “This summer’s convention will only remind Wisconsin voters why they delivered their 10 electoral votes to President Trump in 2016 and why they will do so again in November.”

The Democratic media event also included a welcome reception at Discovery World. There was an update on logistics and security, a presentation about Milwaukee’s history and changes the city has seen, and an overview of Democrats’ 2020 strategy.

Media were also invited on bus tours of Milwaukee landmarks and neighborhoods.

Speaking during the panel discussion on 2020 strategy, David Bergstein, battleground state communications director for the DNC, said that although Trump faces headwinds, Democrats aren’t “taking anything for granted this cycle.”

He said the party is not only reaching out to the base to boost turnout but is

also trying to persuade “disgruntled Republicans” and others in suburban communities and rural areas.

He said the convention will serve as an organizing opportunity to build a team of volunteers and keep them active, so whoever the nominee is, they can have a quick ramp-up of the general election campaign.

Philip Shulman, director of Trump Rapid Response, said the party has hired 17 field staff, has been training organizers in the state and has knocked on 54,000 doors here so far.

He also said neighborhood action teams formed during the 2018 election are still active.

State Democratic Party spokeswoman Courtney Beyer said the party aims to use this April’s Supreme Court race as a dry run for 2020 organizing efforts and then adjust where needed.

She noted that thousands of volunteers will be in Milwaukee for the convention, which the party aims to organize to participate throughout the November election.

“We’re working to build an organizing program that will channel that energy and enthusiasm into tangible work that they can do in their communities,” she said.

Escape from winter and eat ice cream The below zero temps are putting me over the edge. I was enjoying the winter and getting used to the cold.

Then, BAM, the “It hurts to be outside,” weather Wild Chow arrived in full force.

Lisa Erickson Last week, I was helping unload a truckload of Tillamook ice cream into the cooler at Crystal Ball Farms. When I went into the cooler, I thought the motor had gone out because it felt warm. Nope.

Thermometers indicated normal.

When it’s -13 degrees with a strong wind outside, 32 degrees feels warm! The only thing I like about the super cold temps is it gives me an excuse to bake.

Baking things I normally make during the summer is my way of saying, “Take that, Winter!” I made tropical coconut cookie ice cream sandwiches last weekend and served them after my favorite summer meal—Fish Tacos. After the blinds were closed, and some Bossa Nova music was playing in the background, we didn’t even think about how cold it was.

Ice cream sandwiches are the perfect summer treat, but they taste good anytime! There are so many different flavor combinations you can make by changing the type of cookies and ice cream.

I’ve had ginger cookies with peach ice cream and white chocolate chip cookies with dark cherry ice cream—any combination is good Under bake the cookies, baking them until they are just set. Let them cool completely before transferring to a cooling rack. They are much easier to bite into when they are frozen. I also freeze the cookies before I put the ice cream in the middle. It helps keep the ice cream from melting too fast before serving or if I refreeze them.

Coconut Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches Makes 6 dozen cookies or 36 ice cream sandwiches 2¼ cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 cup butter, use the best quality 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed ¾ cup sugar 3 cups shredded coconut, lightly packed

2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. almond flavoring 1 half-gallon, best quality vanilla ice cream like Tillamook Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir in coconut; set aside.

In another large bowl, mix butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until creamy with a mixer at a medium speed; about 3-4 minutes.

Add eggs, one at a time, mixing until combined. Add vanilla and almond extracts and mix until combined. Add the butter mixture to the flour mixture, stirring only until there are no more streaks of flour.

Drop by teaspoonsful onto the baking sheets. Bake for 7-8 minutes until set, but not brown.

Allow cookies to cool slightly before transferring to a cooling rack.

Repeat with remaining dough.

To assemble: Freeze cooled cookies. Place one scoop of ice cream between two cookies and press until ice cream reaches the edges of the cookies. Serve immediately or keep ice cream cookie sandwiches frozen until ready to eat.

Citizen scientists invited to help count bald eagles this January JACKIE BUSSJAEGER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The recovery of the bald eagle has been one of the greatest conservation success stories in American history, but these majestic raptors aren’t quite out of the woods for good. Recent declines in eagle populations have some scientists asking where the biggest threats to these birds lie, and they’ve turned to the public for help.

For the second year, the St. Croix River Association has organized a winter bald eagle count. On Jan. 25, St. Croix Valley residents are invited to explore a route of their choosing within the St. Croix Valley watershed, keeping track of the number of eagles they see.

“We encourage people to plan a route where you can drive a little bit more slowly, maybe out in the country, but to keep moving so you don’t recount the same birds,” said Jaime Souza, SCRA education and outreach coordinator.

You wouldn’t necessarily even have to be in a car, if you want to go out for your winter run or ski, you can do that too.”

All eagles observed between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. can be reported to the SCRA via their website.

Participants will be entered into a drawing to receive an SCRA swag bag as a prize.

The St. Croix Valley is an ideal

home for bald eagles: with plenty of waterways containing a bounty of fish, eagles can keep well-fed through the winter. However, the population of young eagles in the Midwest has declined since 2013. This eagle count is one of many that will take stock of current population trends, and give scientists, conservationists and policymakers a better idea of pressures affecting local eagles. Lead and toxins in the watershed are just a few of the pressures that threaten the health of these birds, Souza explained.

“There’s still some uncertainty about the validity of the decline, so this can help make more sense of the numbers,” Souza said.

The eagle count not only assists scientists in gathering information that can help better understand the decline but also invites locals to engage with science themselves.

“A lot of people want to be involved in science and they want to help and they want to do something that’s easy, that isn’t going to take a lot of time or money, so this is really simple,” Souza said.

Bald eagles are one of Wisconsin’s largest raptors, but there are a few tricks to identification. Juvenile eagles don’t show the same clean white head and tail feathers as a breeding adult.

Instead, these birds look mostly brown, with streaks of patchy white feathers.

Eagles have a very large bill, which

is often a good way to tell them apart from red-tailed hawks at a distance.

While flying, eagles might resemble a turkey vulture, but if you can’t tell from the turkey vulture’s featherless head, their wobbly flight pattern may give them away. Bald eagles usually appear controlled and steady while in flight.

At 77 square miles, the St. Croix Valley watershed includes tributaries like the Namekagon on down to Prescott, Wisconsin. Everything in between is fair game for those taking part in the eagle count. About 20 people took part in the count last year, and Souza hopes to see it grow even more.

“Citizen science is a real thing and it’s really important,” she said. “We’re hoping to become more involved in citizen science in the future, making a difference in protecting habitat and protecting wildlife populations. It’s one of the things people can do to get to know us and our mission better as well. Our mission is to protect our riverway and its watershed. People are very aware; they definitely want to support efforts like this.”

Erickson retiring after 17 years in Webster KAYLA CASEY SENTINEL STAFF

Jim Erickson has worked at the Webster School District as the superintendent for 17 years. After a difficult decision, Erickson has decided that at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, he will be stepping down and retiring.

Erickson had worked at a number of school districts, but his favorite was working at the Webster district. “The Jim Erickson difference between those schools and the Webster School District is the peoplenot only the school personnel, but the community as a whole.”

The decision to finally retire was not an easy one for Erickson. He has loved what he does, and he loves the people he works with.

He says that he will miss the work and his colleagues, but he also knows that the time was right for him to start a new chapter in his life. His Jim Erickson last day will take place in June of this year, but until then, he will continue to enjoy his position as superintendent.

“I still get up every morning excited to come to school, and I feel very fortunate to have worked for and alongside so many compassionate and dedicated people.”

Referendum update for Webster School District KAYLA CASEY SENTINEL STAFF

The Webster School District is looking to address many issues regarding security, safety and updates in their referendum throughout their district. The good news is, if the referendum passes, neither the community or the district have to worry about it affecting the tax levy.

At the Webster school board meeting Monday night, Jim Erickson, superintendent, presented the board with their referendum scope of work for both the elementary school and the 5-12 school. The estimated total project cost for the referendum is approximately $6,500,000.

One of the issues that the board needs to address for the elementary school is the need for the school playground to be updated. They would like to replace the playground equipment, add additional fencing and replace the deteriorated playground asphalt. The other outdoor update will be to add more lighting in the parking lot to increase visibility.

Moving inside the building of the elementary school, there are a few more updates that the referendum would cover, the biggest would be addressing the cafeteria. In the cafeteria, the floor and ceiling need to be replaced and any asbestos-containing materials must be removed. Asbestos will also need to be removed from three other classrooms. Some classroom windows need to be replaced, the bathrooms have to be updated so they are ADA compliant, outdated furniture in classrooms needs to be replaced and key fobs will be added for extra safety and security.

Moving to the 5-12 school, the biggest area covered under the referendum is the school athletic areas. Some of the issues that will be addressed in the referendum is replacing field lights, replacing scoreboards, making the bleachers ADA compliant, replacing the press box, resurface and add two lanes to the existing track, paving the parking lot at the football field, renovating the baseball field and addressing the drainage issues. outdoor issues include redesigning the parking lot due to safety reasons and demolishing the boiler building.

In the classrooms, the FACE equipment needs to be updated and the career and tech education area needs to be expanded

to fit their growing needs.

The seating in the cafetorium also needs to be replaced and updated. For extra safety and security, the fob system needs to be updated and shatter-proof security film should be placed on office windows throughout

the whole district.

The board members stated that because the school district has remained fiscally conservative, if the referendum passes, it will not impact the tax levy.

Captain, and was an aide to U.S. Senator Ron Johnson. Tiffany was elected as State Senator for Wisconsin’s 12th District in 2012 and has served two terms.

He previously served one term in the State Assembly.

In western Wisconsin, the debates will be broadcast live at 10 a.m. Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 on 88.3/Menomonie-Eau Claire and 88.7/River Falls and streamed at wpr.org/western. They will be re-broadcast at 7 p.m.

Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 on 89.7/Eau Claire and 90.7/Menomonie.

Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District includes Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Clark, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Oneida, Polk, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Vilas, and Washburn Counties. It also includes portions of Chippewa, Jackson, Juneau, Monroe and Wood Counties.

The special election was called by Gov. Tony Evers to replace Republican Sean Duffy, who resigned for family reasons last fall. The primary election is on

Feb. 18, with winners facing off in the general election on May 12.

CWD positive deer tracked to Pine County farm ‘At this point in the investigation CWD has not been detected in any of the other herds connected to Douglas County.’

An ongoing chronic wasting disease (CWD) investigation in Minnesota has led to the discovery of a CWD-confirmed doe on a Pine County farm.

As reported by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, the herd in Pine County was being investigated because it provided animals to a Douglas County herd in the past, including a CWD positive doe that initiated the disease investigation.

In December, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health confirmed that an 8-year-old white-tailed doe tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) after its white-tailed buck pen-mate

The USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed the doe’s brain and lymph node tissues were positive for the disease. The site was put under quarantine.

The connection between the two farms made it possible to find the CWD-infected doe in Pine County.

Michael Crusan, communications director at the Minnesota Board of Ani-

mal Health, said that the outbreak took place on a farm in eastern Pine County, and that due to state privacy rules they could not give any more specific information about the location of the farm.

“We identified the Pine County herd as high priority early in our investigation because our records showed it provided deer to the Douglas County herd,” said Board Assistant Director, Dr. Linda Glaser. “At this point in the investiga-

tion CWD has not been detected in any of the other herds connected to Douglas County.”

The Douglas County herd is completely depopulated, and the site is not allowed to have any deer or elk for five years. The owner must also maintain fencing to prevent wild deer from accessing the empty pen and post biohazard signs on the fencing for the entire five-year period.

According to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, the Pine County herd owner must also depopulate and test all remaining deer on the farm and maintain fencing with biohazard signage for SEE DEER, PAGE 20

Jolie Bremer is Grantsburg’s student of the week. She is a freshman this year and is the daughter of Rachel Stevens. Jolie is a conscientious and hardworking student who always holds a positive attitude. Her good grades reflect her strong work ethic.

She is a very sweet, non-judgmental and outgoing person who is always showing compassions towards her peers. Jolie is involved on her high school’s basketball team. Outside of school, she enjoys art and reading.

After graduating she would like to attend college to become an engineer.

The greatest influence in Jolie’s life is her aunt because she pushes her to do her best. The trait she values most in herself is her strong will to do her best.

Vincent Mykkanen is Siren’s student of the week this week. Vincent is the son of Sean Mykkanen, Kellie Stark and stepmom Traci Mykkanen. Vincent is very active in sports playing football, basketball and baseball. His favorite class currently is tech education, but he is excited for F.A.C.E. when he has the class. Outside of school, he has many hobbies including playing video games, reading and getting outside to ride his dirt bike and ATV. After graduating, Vincent would to to attend college to become a technician or join the military.

Chelsea Johnson is Webster’s student of the week. She is a freshman this year and is the daughter of James Johnson and Shelly Groess. Chelsea is a very friendly person that is always seen with a smile on her face. She is an excellent person to have in the classroom because she works hard, finishes her work and is dedicated to being a good student. She has participated in a number of school musicals and also participates in band and softball. Her hobbies outside of school include snowmobiling and riding ATVs with her dad and drawing.

After graduating, Chelsea would like to attend college to become a game warden. The traits she values most in herself is that she is loyal and trustworthy.

Well, many of you sat at the edge of your seats on Sunday, as the football playoff positions were determined. Now we rest a week and get ready for the Super Bowl with San Francisco and Kansas City.

I can’t complain about the snow that we spent shoveling over the weekend after talking to relatives in Newfoundland, Canada, where up to 9-10 feet (YES! FEET) of snow fell. By the way, did you know the deepest accumulation of snow on

record in the Badger State was the 83 inches – that’s nearly 7 feet! – measured on April 3, 1933, in the Flambeau Reservoir of far northern Wisconsin.

Fun Facts: Eagle River is known as the Snowmobile Capital of the World and all snowflakes have six sides.

Fresh breath, strong teeth and healthy gums are all part of your oral health. There are four simple ways you can make —and keep— your mouth clean and healthy: Brush twice a day. Floss regularly. Rinse with mouthwash. Chew sugar-free gum after meals.

It is important to focus on these four routines that can help people maintain healthy smiles.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), it is recommended to brush your teeth twice a day, for two minutes, with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of the brush should fit the mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.

The proper brushing technique is to: • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes. • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of the teeth. • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several upand-down strokes. • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

Cleaning between your teeth is an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums. The ADA recommends flossing between your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque that is not removed by brushing. If plaque is not disrupted, it can eventually cause cavities, which leads to inflammation, bleeding gums, and bone loss.

Because teeth alone account for less than half of the mouth, rinsing with a mouthwash can help eliminate biofilm and bacteria that brushing and flossing cannot. Rinsing often, along with brushing and flossing, may help reduce the chance of dental decay and infection. However, mouthwash is not a replacement for brushing or flossing.

Also, avoid alcohol-based rinses because they can dry out your mouth and irritate the soft tissues.

Lastly, clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay. The chewing of sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, which washes away food and other debris, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth.

Mississippi and life so far Hello everyone, This week I, Selina, will be writing to you instead of my Dad to fill you in on the rest of our trip in Mississippi, and my time at UWSP so far.

I wish I could tell you that we had some incredibly exciting hunts where we saw all kinds of hogs and big deer. Unfortunately, though if I were to tell you that I would be lying. As my Dad stated in last week’s article there was extreme flooding last year where we were in Mississippi which caused almost all the hogs to either be shot or they moved to areas that weren’t flooded. This meant no hogs. On the other hand, the deer in our area were a mystery, when we first arrived at our spot, we were amazed by all the sign there.

There were scrapes, tracks, and buck rubs all over the place. I was extremely excited to begin hunting as I have never hunted somewhere with so much sign before.

Apparently though all this sign did not mean much considering we hunted close to forty hours each and between the three of us only saw two bucks. I was the lucky one and saw both but couldn’t get a shot at either because neither were the legal size. My Dad and Uncle Tommy saw nothing but birds and squirrels. Although it was not ideal, none of us let it get us down as we all know that it happens, and we were trying our hardest and there really wasn’t much else we could have been doing as we sat from dawn until dusk.

Despite the slow hunting I still had a great time on the trip and learned a lot while I was down there. It was great to see my Uncle Tommy and Aunt Laurie who live in Louisiana, as I rarely get to see them, and they are both always a riot. My favorite part of this trip though was just seeing the different type of ecosystem there and how different the habitat is there compared to Wisconsin. Since I started college and learning more

about how important habitat is and the science behind wildlife ecology rather than just been interested in hunting/fishing I have started to pick up on a lot more things during these trips and been a lot more interested in them.

As many of you know I just finished my first semester at UWSP and am currently on winter break.

My time at UWSP so far has been great and I couldn’t ask to be at a better college for me. My major is wildlife ecology and management, so I spend most of my time within the College of Natural Resources.

The professors and staff there are all very supportive and seem like they really do care about the student’s success and that they get hands on experience while in school, rather than shipping them off with only classroom knowledge after they graduate. Even though I have only been there for one semester I feel like I have already learned so much and grown as a person in many ways. I often get asked if the transition was hard or if I struggled my first semester, and although it wasn’t easy I can honestly say that I am incredibly happy and love where I am in my life right now and where I am headed.

I have high hopes of being a wildlife biologist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service someday. I know that is a very competitive field to get into but know that I have a great support system behind me and know that if I continue to push myself and work hard it is very attainable!

LCO tribal government supported four LCO members for this Pilot Training Program We currently have five trainees from LCO participating in our WIOA Credentialed Industry Certified 5-6-week Heavy Equipment CAT Simulator Training at our SOFTEC Venue located in Siren. This 5-6-week course started for our LCO candidates on Dec. 23, 2019 and is targeted for a graduation date of Jan. 31, 2020.

LCO 2019-2020 Pilot TSM Heavy Equipment CAT Simulator Training Program This TSM Certified Course will open doors to the workforce with Heavy Equipment Industry Recognized Certification in an accelerated 5-6-week Training Model. This Training will enable each trainee the opportunity to join a Union sponsorship program

through qualifying Union companies. In June 2019, the average starting wage as a Union Operating Engineer Apprentice was $24.50 per hour, before benefits.

Union, and Non-Union opportunities are also available with a variety of Heavy Equipment Construction Industry partners locally involving multiple equipment platforms and workload processes.

Our Pilot training program State Data is recorded to show that our initial nine trainees had an average starting wage of $19.25/hr. before benefits. Our program model introduces Industry partners and allows for personal networking with the teams that will be doing the hiring. This networking is invaluable for each participant building confidence while learning

the interview process. SOFTEC has received local, regional and tribal government support through an increasing number of industry, business and private donors.

Smart, sober driving is season-long lesson of International Snowmobile Safety Week

MADISON–– Snowmobilers enjoying Wisconsin’s trails often hear conservation wardens stressing the importance of safety, staying sober and being smart, which also are among the top priorities promoted during International Snowmobile Safety Week, Jan. 18-26.

Capt. April Dombrowski, who leads the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Bureau of Law Enforcement Recreational Safety and Outdoor Skills Section, says the awareness week spotlights the smart and safe methods all snowmobilers should use the entire season.

“One death during snowmobile season is one too many. Wisconsin is the birthplace of snowmobiling, and it is as much a state tradition as the gun deer season,” Dombrowski said. “Because Wisconsin can have upwards of 25,000 groomed trails during winter, safety is a top priority for this outdoor recreational machine enjoyed by friends and families.”

The DNR recorded 16 fatal snowmobile accidents in 2019. Eleven of those involved operation on public trails and roadways while four incidents occurred on frozen waterways.

Dombrowski said the wardens’ goal is to help everyone have fun and make lifelong memories while enjoying Wisconsin’s incredible

trails, many of which are groomed by volunteers.

“Safe snowmobiling means riding within your capabilities, operating at safe and appropriate speeds for the terrain, machine and user capability, along with the element of daylight visibility versus night operation. Moreover, never drink alcoholic beverages before or while driving,” Dombrowski said. “Always wear a helmet and adequate clothing, stay within designated riding areas and always snowmobile with another person, never alone.”

Another factor in Wisconsin snowmobiling is the ice that covers the 15,000 lakes and other water bodies.

Winter’s fluctuating temperatures, snowfalls and snowmelts have made for often-changing terrain and mixed conditions on snowmobile trails. “Nobody wants the sudden surprise of breaking through ice or riding into open water conditions,” she said. “Your best pre-ride action is to contact those local fishing clubs, snowmobile clubs or outfitters and inquire about the ice conditions. The DNR does not monitor conditions.”

There can be cracks and changes in the thickness you may not be able to see. This is especially true after the first cold nights, and the early ice is spotted.

Always remember that ice is never completely safe under any conditions.

Go with a friend. It is safer and more fun.

Carry a cellphone and let people know where you are going and when you will return home.

Wear proper clothing and equipment, including a life jacket or a float coat to help you stay afloat and to help slow body heat loss.

Carry a couple of spikes and a length of light rope in an easily accessible pocket to help pull yourself - or others - out of the ice.

Do not travel in unfamiliar areas - or at night.

Know if the lake has inlets, outlets or narrows that have currents, which can thin the ice.

Take extra mittens or gloves, so you always have a dry pair.

The DNR wants you to be safe enjoying the outdoors. Common sense is the greatest ally in preventing ice-related accidents.

The Salvation Army Kettles in Burnett County meet goal

The Burnett County Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign has come to a close. The organization’s annual campaign had a goal of raising $40,000 in November and December to help fund their programs that include: Faith House Shelter, Emergency Vouchers for Heat, Electric, Rent and their Food Backpack Program that helps to feed kids in need.

The goal of $40,000 is crucial to the organization in helping to fund the day to day needs of Faith House Shelter and the other programs. Faith House provides a warm place to stay, case management and connections to resources in order for individuals and families to find and maintain permanent housing. The Salvation Army in Burnett County is pleased to announce that with the help of many awesome donors and volunteer bell ringers the Duana Bremer organization was able to Local Salvation Army Director raise $39,740.04!

Danbury Fire and Rescue and Webster School Food and Toy Drive The holiday season was full of giving this year thanks to the Danbury Fire and Rescue lead by George Costello.

They again teamed up with the Webster Schools/Student Council to provide gifts and food for families in need in the Webster School District. This year saw 108 families receive gifts and food boxes. The Danbury Fire and Rescue does the majority of the fundraising and the Webster Student Council purchases the toys and food, then packs and delivers these items to families in need.

As an example, this year each family received a ham and a fifty dollar Wayne’s gift card plus food items and gifts. The students help this cause by doing a coin war between the classes at the middle and high school level. Donations were also received from Zia Louisa, White Tail Wilderness, and Wayne’s Foods. As you can see this is a community effort.

SIREN – The next chance for a win at home is Thursday for the WSFLG boys co-op hockey team.

The Blizzard face Baldwin-Woodville in what was originally scheduled as the third of three consecutive home games, though the second game was postponed last Saturday due to weather. And the first game of the home stretch didn’t garner a favorable result for WSFLG. Last Thursday, the Blizzard hosted Rice Lake and took their third shutout loss of the season, 9-0. The Warriors outshot WSFLG 41-12 and scored eight of their nine goals at even strength, including four in the first period.

Cole Fenske, Zach Holmstrom and Bryce Brettingen scored goals in a three-minute span of the period, then a fourth goal was added late to put Rice Lake up 4-0. The Warriors added another less than six minutes into the second and had two more in the span of 20 seconds to take a 7-0 lead into the third.

LUCK – The Webster boys basketball team was seconds from changing the Lakeland West title race.

Just one team – Luck – remained undefeated in conference play through four games and though the Tigers entered the Jan. 14 road game with a 2-2 in-conference mark, they held a lead in the final minute and about to move within a game of the Cardinals.

But a late Luck basket and following free throw kept the Cardinals undefeated while sending the Tigers a game further back in the standings.

Harlo Olson sank a go-ahead shot for Webster to take a 53-51 lead late, to which the Cardinals answered with a Carsen Eley basket and free throw to take a 54-53 win. Carsen Stenberg had 19 points for Webster though Luck’s Levi Jensen and Gage Johansen prevented the Tigers from opening a larger lead and grasping the upset win.

Webster held several leads in the first half, including a 22-18 advantage after a Stenberg 3-pointer. The Cardinals responded by scoring the final 11 points of the half to take a 29-22 lead into the break.

Tough week for girls hoops SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL

ST. CROIX FALLS – The Siren girls basketball team had its shot at the leader.

But that shot, along with many of those attempted in the game by the Dragons, missed.

St. Croix Falls maintained its undefeated record in the Lakeland West and overall by trouncing Siren 6912 on Jan. 14, dropping the Dragons to 2-4 in conference play. “(St. Croix Falls) was clearly a Division 3 team playing against a Division 5 team,” Siren coach Ryan Karsten said. “They have some really good talent and they don’t have just one key player to stop.”

Siren witnessed the Saints’ depth in the first half as they pulled away despite the Dragons holding Olivia Miron – St. Croix Falls’ leading scorer – to just two points before halftime. The rest of the Saints’ roster picked-up the slack and pushed their lead near 30 before the break.

St. Croix Falls eventually took a 36-7 lead before halftime and the situation only worsened for the Dragons. They were held to just five points in the second half while the Saints had five players reach double-digit point totals in the game.

Miron finished with a game-high 17 points for St. Croix Falls and Azalea Edwards had 13. Jaidyn Jewell led the Dragons with five points; Jalynn Nelson added three.

Siren did recover to improve their overall record to 8-4 with a 67-42 home win over Bruce on Thursday.

Gymnasts preparing for Rice Lake Invite SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL

GRANTSBURG – The venue will be familiar to the Grantsburg co-op gymnastics team.

This Saturday, the team returns to Rice Lake for an 11-team invitational after earning a head-to-head victory there last week. Grantsburg’s Allison and Jeni Peterson totaled four event wins to lead the team to a 114.375-110.35 win on Jan. 14.

Allison Peterson was atop the final standings in three events for Grantsburg while Jeni had a 1stplace finish and two runner-up spots.

Allison Peterson won the balance beam with a 7.95 to finish a full point ahead of Jeni (6.95) in second place. Amy Harmon (6.0) added a 5th-place finish while Khylie Young-Garayt (5.7) was seventh and McKayla Blume (4.5) was 10th.

In the uneven bars, Allison Peterson led a trio of Grantsburg competitors at the top. She finished with a 6.85 while Harmon was second with a 6.8 and Jeni Peterson was third with a 6.775. Young Garayt (5.2) was eighth.

Jenni Peterson earned her win in the floor exercise with an 8.325 while Allison was third with a 7.25 and Harmon was fourth with a 7.0. Young-Garayt (6.65) added a 7th-place finish and Mya Benson (5.8) was 10th.

Rice Lake broke through for a 1-2 finish at the vault with Micaela Walters (8.85) edging teammate Trinity Roberts (8.55). Jeni and Allison Peterson (8.475) tied for third while Young-Garayt (8.125) tied for sixth; Harmon (7.85) was eighth and Blume (7.575) was 10th.

The all-around ended with a tie between Allison and Jeni Peterson, both finishing with a 30.525. Harmon (27.65) was fourth and Young-Garayt (25.675) was sixth.

“We had some really good performances and some rough moments,” Grantsburg coach Kathy Lund said. “(And) we added some new skills on the floor.”

Grantsburg was scheduled to be in a multi-team meet at River Falls last Saturday but it was postponed due to weather. Madeline Kramer earned the Grantsburg JV team’s lone win at Rice Lake, finishing with a 6.2 in the floor exercise.

The Luck-Frederic-Grantsburg-Siren co-op wrestling team has three events this week, including an invitational this Saturday at St. Croix Falls – a top-5 ranked Division 3 team. Last week was supposed to provide a pair of meets to prepare for this busy week, though only one came through.

In the event weather didn’t hamper, LFGS went to Shell Lake to earn a 48-18 win on Thursday.

The team collected a significant amount of points on Shell Lake forfeits in eight divisions and added more in several of the matches that had two competitors.

LFGS got wins at 103 and 120 be-

fore Taedon Nichols (126) earned a 5-1 win over Tyler Schunk.

Landyn Johnson (138) had a 4-0 win over Cody Swan and Gavin Fredericks (145) won in 39 seconds over Ben Coen. Shell Lake then forfeited matches at 152, 160, 170 and 195.

The win was payback for LFGS, which had a much tougher time against Shell Lake last yaer.

“We looked a little better this time,” LFGS coach Chris Bartlett said. “Last year, (Shell Lake) took it to us pretty bad. We made sure they didn’t forget it all week (and) it worked.”

Spooner-Webster hosts Superior this Thursday and goes to Shell Lake on Saturday after falling a few matches shy of a win against Barron on Jan. 14. Barron won each match from 106-120 and split the remaining matches for a 47-30 win over the Rails.

Jimmy Melton (126) earned a win by pin in 24 seconds for Spooner-Webster; Brody Jepson (138) won in 3:29; Brandon Meister (152) won in 1:41 and Carter Melton (182) won in 1:51. But, the difference was in the five wins by pin for Barron along with two wins by major decision.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Season hits halfway point for Dragons, Pirates and Tigers Jan. 14.

Grantsburg improved to 3-2 in the Lakeland West by limiting the Vikings to one primary scoring option. Adam Dreier led all scorers with 19 points for Frederic though scoring depth favored the Pirates.

Austin Wedin led Grantsburg with 17 points and Sterling McKinley had 14, including 10 in the first half.

McKinley sank a pair of 3-pointers before halftime and led the Pirates to a 29-23 lead.

Wedin and Jared VanWatermeulen helped secure the win in the second half with Wedin scoring nine and VanWatermeulen adding six.

VanWatermeulen finished with 12 points for Grantsburg and Gus Bergman added six.

The win improved the Pirates’ overall record to 6-4 and they host St. Croix Falls this Friday before going to Clear Lake on Saturday and Turtle Lake on Tuesday.

With minutes remaining, Parent sank consecutive baskets to dwindle Luck’s lead to 47-44 in the closing minutes and as the Tigers remained three points behind, they went on a 7-0 run to take a 53-51 lead with less than two minutes remaining.

But this go-ahead basket from Olson gave Webster its final points of the game. Luck’s Carsen Eley got the game-tying basket and drew a foul that sent Olson out of the game.

Eley sank the free throw, though the Tigers had time for one last shot.

They got the ball to Stenberg for a potential game-winning 3-pointer, but the shot didn’t fall and Jensen got the rebound to preserve the win.

Jensen finished with a gamehigh 23 points for the Cardinals and Johansen had a gamehigh 18 rebounds. Stenberg led the Tigers with 19 points while Parent and Washburn had 10 points each.

Luck therefore improved to 5-0 in the conference while the Tigers dropped to 2-3 in the Lakeland West and 5-5 overall. Webster hosts Lac Courte Oreilles this Friday and goes to Shell Lake on Tuesday.

“We shot the ball very well,” Karsten said.

“It was by far the best (3-point) shooting for us this season.”

Shetler sank four of the Dragons’ nine makes from 3-point range while Lindsay Liljenberg andn Hannah Lemieux had two each. Meanwhile, the visitor struggled from long range, making just two of its 15 3-point attempts.

While Halle Anderson had a game-high 19 points for Bruce and teammate Capri Strom added 17, the Dragons limited the rest of its roster to six total points.

Liljenberg finished with 15 points for Siren; Jewell had nine while both Vinni Rightman and Lemieux had six points each.

The Dragons play at Unity this Friday and host Bayfield on Tuesday.

WEBSTER The Tigers entered the week still trying to snap an in-conference losing streak, after taking a 57-42 loss at Luck on Jan. 14.

Grace Thoreson had a game-high 25 points for the Cardinals, who remained within a game of St. Croix Falls in the Lakeland West standings with the win.

Brooke Hetfeld led the Webster offense with 16 points and 13 rebounds though the Tigers struggled overall from the floor and 3-point line. They were just 15-for-44 from the floor while sinking just three of their 18 3-point attempts. Hannah McDowell had all three of Webster’s 3-pointers and finished with 13 points in the game.

The Tigers dropped to 2-9 overall and to 1-4 in the conference with the loss. They

host Lac Courte Oreilles this Friday and go to Shell Lake on Tuesday.

GRANTSBURG The Pirates got into the win column in conference play but started this week with a non-conference loss.

Grantsburg got 18 points from Brooke Quimby and 16 from Olivia Ohnstad in a 50-43 win over Frederic on Jan. 14 to snap a four-game skid in the Lakeland West. That tandem allowed the Pirates to overcome a game-high 20 points from Hannah Schmidt.

The Pirates held a 27-25 lead late in the first half and closed it with a 6-0 run to take an eight-point lead into the break. Frederic started the second half with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 33-33 and the Vikings later took a 39-38 lead. But, Ohnstad scored the game’s next five points to return the lead to Grantsburg, which also scored the final four points of the game.

Ohnstad also had a team-high 11 rebounds; Quimby added nine rebounds; Madison Schafer added eight points. The win also brought the Pirates to the .500 mark overall on the season at 5-5, but that was short-lived.

Grantsburg made less than 20 percent of its shots from the floor and the free throw line in a 51-27 loss at Amery on Monday.

“We struggled to get anything going offensively,” Grantsburg coach Penny Curtin said. “That being said, we did take care of the ball much better with only 10 turnovers and we took more shots than our opponent.”

Ohnstad led the Pirates with nine points, 10 rebounds and six steals; Renee Tooze added seven rebounds.

Grantsburg hosts conference-leading St. Croix Falls this Friday and goes to Turtle Lake on Tuesday.

SIREN The Dragons entered the week still searching for their first Lakeland West win of the season. Their latest attempt – at St. Croix Falls – was essentially halted before halftime on Jan. 14.

The Saints had 10 players score in the game, including five reaching double-digit

point totals in an 81-44 win over Siren. Kullan Parks had a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for St. Croix Falls, which turned a close game early into a runaway win.

“We played right with them for the first 10 minutes, (but) they gained the lead going into the half (and) in the second half we struggled to score,” Siren coach Rick Kosloski said.

Riley Churchill scored seven of his nine points in the first half for Siren and Nick Webster added five. But, Parks and teammate Jared Lessman combined for 19 first-half points to guide the Saints to a double-digit lead.

St. Croix Falls then continued scoring in the second half while the Dragons had trouble finding offense. None of Siren’s players had more than one make from the floor in the second, nor reached double-digit point totals in the game.

Churchill and Nick Webster had nine points each for Siren while Nathan Kosloski added six. The Dragons dropped to 1-9 overall and to 0-6 in the Lakeland West; they host Washburn this Thursday and play at Unity on Friday before returning home to host Glenwood City on Monday.

Canes fall to Duluth SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL

HAYWARD – The win streak stopped but the unbeaten streak continued for the Hayward girls co-op hockey team.

The Hurricanes sought their third consecutive win on Thursday against Duluth at home and though they didn’t add the win, they still avoided a loss with a 1-1 tie. Grantsburg’s Emma Quimby had 26 saves for the Hurricanes, who needed a late goal in regulation to force overtime.

Duluth took a 1-0 lead near the midway point of the first period and kept Hayward scoreless until late in the third period. After allowing a goal in the first period, Quimby rejected all five Duluth shots in the second period and all nine in the third.

They capitalized by getting a goal from Jerzy Petit, assisted by Riley Sprenger and Kennedy Sprenger.

However, overtime wasn’t a guarantee since Hayward was called for tripping just seconds later to give Duluth a power play in the final two minutes.

Hayward and Quimby killed the penalty and went into extra play, where Quimby denied Duluth a game-winning goal on each of its five shots.

The Hurricanes were scheduled for another chance to extend their unbeaten streak on Saturday with a game against Wisconsin Valley Union, but the game was postponed due to weather. They sat at 6-7-1 overall after the tie.

Hayward hosts North Shore this Thursday and Onalaska on Saturday before going to Western Wisconsin on Tuesday.

Wisconsin’s commitment to good roads and reliable transportation goes back more than a century and is built into our identity.

We would not have become the Dairy State if farmers did not have a reliable way to get milk from farms to bottling plants and cheese factories. Dairy farming doesn’t quit in winter, and cows don’t take a day off. Out of necessity, gravel roads gave way to pavement as Wisconsin invested in infrastructure and made our state stand out in the Midwest for its ease of reliable travel.

Agriculture, industry and tourism are the state’s economic pillars; each relying on good infrastructure. For decades, Wisconsin’s proud commitment to make our state easy to travel strengthened all parts of our economy and enhanced our way of life.

Thanks to a strong bipartisan effort, we are getting back on track and making the most of our resources to serve Wisconsin.

The direction we are taking is an important first step for fixing our roads.

Gov. Tony Evers signed a Transportation Budget that cuts the level of borrowing and finds efficiencies in government. It invests an additional $320 million in state highway improvements, which is part of $465 million in new funding. It provides a 10 percent increase in available funding for general transportation aids paid to local governments and, at the same time, represents the lowest level of bonding in the last 20 years.

This budget allows us to drive forward with more than 1,200

miles of highway repair and more than 35 bridge projects that otherwise would have waited years longer. These long-awaited projects are based in more than 58 counties across Wisconsin and will improve safety and mobility around the state.

Wisconsin’s economic future does not rely solely on roads, and we are supporting the efforts of local governments to build options that work in their communities.

The current budget supports all modes of transportation including harbors, railroads, air traffic control systems, and transit projects for the disabled, seniors and others.

By leveraging federal grants and finding efficiencies, we are improving passenger rail service along the Hiawatha Line and extending its reach through bus service along the I-41 Corridor to Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, the Fox Valley and Green Bay. These successes come from leadership and a commitment to make state government work better for the people of Wisconsin. Here are some of the achievements of 2019: • Safety is our highest priority.

We brought back and rebranded the “Zero in Wisconsin” campaign to remind drivers to follow speed limits, buckle up, and avoid distractions. We are grateful that traffic deaths in 2019 were at a five-year low and we will continue to make every effort to remind drivers that we can be, and should be, more careful out there.

• We have acted to stop the decline in road conditions and moved toward sustainable funding for Wisconsin’s transportation needs.

• To better serve our local partners, we are piloting a new

program that cuts red tape and reduces costs for local bridge repair.

Straightforward bridge repair that can be done without serious environmental risks should not have to wait • Internally, the Department of Transportation expanded its Lean Government program to save or avoid hundreds of thousands of dollars of costs per year and put staff hours into where they are most needed. For the first time in years, the Department of Transportation is conducting risk-based internal audits and program reviews to improve efficiency and compliance.

• For the first time in five years, Gov. Evers convened the state’s Transportation Projects Commission (TPC). The bipartisan group of legislators and citizen members reviews the status of major highway studies and projects. In their last meeting, they agreed to remove three studies, saving taxpayers money. The TPC also improves transparency and communication between Department of Transportation and the state legislature.

Our work reflects the values and hard work that paved our roads in the first place. Safe, efficient transportation moves goods and services, gets people to work and school, and brings tourists and travelers to their destinations.

As we move ahead into 2020, and beyond, we will continue to look for innovative and cost-saving ways to take care of the roads and bridges that connect us and to expand what our infrastructure offers. This year marks an important first step. We are not there yet, but transportation in Wisconsin is moving in the right direction.

SUPERIOR – A new win streak and possibly a shot at a conference title were squashed by University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The UW-Superior women’s hockey team, including Webster’s Jenna Curtis, could have moved up in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) standings while putting together consecutive wins in a pair of games against the Blugolds. However, the fifth-ranked Blugolds handed the Yellowjackets their first back-to-back losses of the season with a 5-1 win on Thursday and a 1-0 win on Saturday.

UW-Eau Claire scored three third-period goals to turn a close 2-1 game into its three-goal win on Thursday.

The Yellowjackets looked for a second consecutive win, after having their six-game streak snapped before earning a win over Bethel on Jan. 11. And they kept a scoreless tie with UW-Eau Claire well into the second period before it scored two goals in a three-minute span.

A goal from Kaleigh Martinson just beyond the midway point of the middle period brought UW-Superior within a goal at 2-1 but the Blugolds’ three goals in the third created a deficit the Yellowjackets couldn’t overcome.

UW-Eau Claire then hosted Saturday’s game and improved to 4-0 in the WIAC with a 1-0 win over UW-Superior. The teams played two scoreless periods and went more than 14 minutes into the third before the Blugolds scored the game’s lone goal on the power play. While the Blugolds had two power plays in the game, the Yellowjackets went without any.

UW-Superior dropped to 9-4-1 overall and to 2-2 in the WIAC, two full games behind the Blugolds in the conference race. The Yellowjackets will need wins in both games of a home-and-home series this week to maintain a realistic shot at the WIAC title.

However, UW-River Falls entered the week with a 13-3-1 overall record, including a 4-1 conference mark, to garner a No. 7 ranking.

UW-Superior goes to River Falls on Thursday and hosts the rematch on Saturday.

Burnett Medical Center Foundation Annual Valentine’s Dinner

On Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, the Burnett Medical Center Foundation will host its 11th annual Valentine’s Dinner and fundraiser at Tesora’s Event Center in Siren, Wisconsin to benefit expanded healthcare in our area. Last year we enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, music and fun which was attended by more than 260 people.

As the Foundation begins its 12th year in operation, we are so grateful to have giving people in the area of our medical center—people like you who are involved in our community and support worthy organizations like the BMC Foundation. In our 11 years of operation we have been able to raise over $262,000 to fund many improvements that the Medical Center would not otherwise have been able to accomplish. Need clear access to deliver, postal service says It takes more than a few flakes to deter letter carriers from making their appointed rounds throughout the Midwest and Upper Midwest.

“But, if we cannot reach your mailbox, we cannot deliver your mail,” said Kristy Anderson, Strategic Communications Specialist.

“The Postal Service treats safety and service with equal priority,” Anderson said. “That’s why we remind you to include that mailbox in your snow removal routine.”

Residents who receive delivery to roadside mailboxes also must keep the approach to, and exit from, the mailbox clear of snow or any other obstacles, like trash cans and other vehicles. “The carrier needs to get in, and then out, without leaving the vehicle or backing up,”

“Please watch for slow-moving postal vehicles, carriers on foot, and children that play near mailboxes or snow banks,” she said.

Helen Gravesen Helen Gravesen, of rural Webster, died Jan. 15, 2020 at the age of 99 years, 8 months, and 13 days.

Helen Caroline Christine Olson was born to Arthur and Ella (Thompson) Olson on May 2, 1920, at the home of her grandm mother in Grantsburg, Wisc consin. She graduated from G Grantsburg High School in 11938.

Early jobs included w waitress, housekeeper, the m munitions plant during the w war, packaging nuts and b bolts in Rockford, IL, and ssewing children’s snowssuits at Supak’s garment ffactory in Minneapolis.

On April 26, 1946, soon after his return from World War II, she married Donald Laurids Gravesen in Minneapolis, Minn.

They moved to the home farm near Webster in Feb. 1951 and Helen lived in the original house since that time until moving in with her daughter and son-inlaw in Dec. 2016. She helped with the truck farm and the dairy farm.

Helen liked to sew, knit, crochet, do embroidery and other handwork, as well as garden. She loved flowers. She enjoyed having company. She was known for cooking and baking. She made the hot cross buns for the Easter Breakfast at church for many years, baked the dinner rolls for family Thanksgivings until she was 92, and baked all the rolls for her daughter’s wedding and her own 90th birthday party! One year she had 64 entries in the Webster Fair, and through the years received many blue ribbons and championships. She was the winner of the Dairy Bake-off in 1978 and appeared on the televised competition in Eau Claire. She was

an Extension Homemaker, 4-H project leader, member of Grace United Methodist Church and 43-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Lowell Olson and Betty Lu Nielsen; her loving husband; and an infant grandchild, Luke Edward Weber.

Helen is survived by daughter, Dianne (Edward) Weber of Webster; and son, Allen (Colette) Gravesen of Trego; five grandchildren: Maren Weber (Mike Bermudez) of Peoria Arizona, Kasey (Andy) Tveter of St Paul Minn., Jessica Gravesen-Seis (Dave) of Barron, Dane (Ashley) Gravesen of Cameron, and Christian (Amber) Gravesen of Jim Falls; and great-grandchildren: Emmett and Adalynn Gravesen and Alma Helen Tveter; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, from 5-8 p.m. at the Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home in Webster. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at 11 a.m. (visitation from 10-11 a.m.) at the Grace United Methodist Church in Webster, with Pastor Eddie Crise officiating. Interment will be held following the service at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Jerry Nichols, Bruce Olson, Dennis Gravesen, Eugene Harrington, Mark Gamache, and Mark Freeborn (each of whom she chose and asked personally). Honorary Pallbearers are Steven Nielsen and Stanton Nielsen.

Helen will be remembered for her positive outlook, welcoming home, full cookie tins, and her giggle. “I had a good life. I appreciate all my wonderful friends and family.”

Alan Paul Schillerberg Remembering the life of Alan Paul Schillerber.

Alan Paul Schillerberg, of Alden, Minn., formerly of Grantsburg, died after a long battle with cancer on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 at his home in Alden.

He was born on Jan. 30, 11948, in Denison, Iowa the sson of Clarence and Elizab beth (Berens) Schillerberg.

H He graduated from Denison H High School and began his e eight years of service in the N National Guard.

On Nov. 25, 1967, Alan m married his high school ssweetheart, Cheryl Dahleen iin Denison, Iowa. They e enjoyed many travels a and adventures together throughout their 52 years of marriage.

They lived throughout the MIdwest, including Denison, IA, Blue Earth, Minn., Spencer, Iowa and Bloomington, Minn. They eventually decided to build their dream home in the woods near Grantsburg.

Alan and Cheryl owned and operated “The Granary,” a hardware store in Webster, until they sold due to Alan’s failing health.

Alan was an extremely social individual with a great sense of humor that enjoyed visiting with all types of people, loved being in nature and was heavily involved as a Boy Scout Leader. He also loved to do woodworking, wood carving, antiquing and going to auctions.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Diane Amaral.

five years. The investigation is continuing beyond this herd to discover additional movements of deer between it and other locations in the past. Any additional farms identified will be quarantined and their movement records will be reviewed.

Crusan said an epidemiologist had been called in to track the origin and path of the disease in the Pine County herd. He said that area residents should not be alarmed, but urged those spotting roadkill deer to contact the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

CWD is a disease of the deer and elk family caused by prions, which can damage brain and nerve tissue.

The disease is most likely transmitted when infected deer and elk shed prions in saliva, feces, urine, and other fluids or tissues. CWD is not known to naturally occur in other animals. The disease is fatal in deer and elk, and there are no known treatments or vaccines.

Consuming infected meat is not advised.

RARICK SPEAKS OUT ON CWD Minnesota State Senator Jason Rarick (R-Brook Park) said that his office would explore every option to prevent a CWD crisis.

“We are taking the threat posed by Chronic Wasting Disease extremely seriously,” Rarick said. “I am hopeful that this will be an isolated incident in Pine County and that it hasn’t spread any further.”

Rarick stated that in 2019, the Minnesota legislature dedicated $1.8 million to the University of Minnesota for surveillance, research, and preventive measures to protect Minnesota’s deer populations, including a live test to detect Chronic Wasting Disease. The legislature also implemented new rules on farms, such as stricter fencing regulations and a requirement of double gates.

Who We Are….

Over the past couple of years I’ve enjoyed watching a program on PBS called 800 words.

One synopsis of the show is as follows: George Turner is a popular columnist for a top-selling Sydney newspaper, writing a weekly column which he insists must be exactly 800 words. After his wife dies, he buys (over the internet and unseen) a new home in a (fictional) small New Zealand

seaside town called Weld, where his parents took him on holiday as a child. He then has to break the news to his two teenage children, Shay and Arlo. But the colourful and inquisitive locals in Weld ensure Turner’s dream of a fresh start does not go exactly to plan.

Since I am a short term bridge pastor for two local churches Bethany and Pilgrim I was taken by surprise to find out that I could share 300-350 words in this week’s paper. My life isn’t quite the “soap opera”

of 800 words but, what I like about the show is the way the people in a small town open their hearts and lives and secrets to this outsider who over time appears to have been accepted by them.

In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America that I serve we are in the Epiphany season of the church year. The focus for our Sunday worship is what happens when Jesus first appears on the scene from the small rural village of Nazareth to the River Jordan where he

Farmers Union members gather in Madison for Farm & Rural Lobby Day Farmland preservation, clean water, fair maps among topics discussed MADISON–– Over 80 family farmers and rural advocates gathered in Madison Jan. 15 for Wisconsin Farmers Union’s Farm & Rural Lobby Day. Participants advocated for policy priorities set by the grassroots membership at the family farm organization’s state convention. Among issues they discussed with their representatives were preserving farmland, protecting drinking water, and ensuring fair maps through nonpartisan redistricting.

“This is our day in Madison as regular citizen lobbyists,” says WFU Executive Director Julie Bomar. “It’s a powerful feeling to be an engaged citizen in solidarity with others.”

“The chance to speak one-on-one with our representatives and put a face to the issues is empowering and why I come back year after year,” said beef farmer Rachel Bouressa of New London. “I enjoy it more and more each year as I develop a relationship with my representatives.” Bouressa said WFU’s support for clean water and farmland preservation spoke strongly to her, noting, “I live in a community where our wells are very high in nitrates, so I was glad to come voice support for the power of cover crops, grazing, and farmer-led efforts to address clean water.”

This was April Prusia’s third time attending the Farm & Rural Lobby Day. For the Blanchardville farmer, WFU’s stance on the need for nonpartisan

redistricting resonated. “It feels good to be with my people, my farmer family, and advocate for what we believe in,” Prusia said. “When we bring our voices together, it’s stronger. It’s a beautiful thing.”

“It was a little intimidating to be in the state Capitol and speaking with the individuals who have so much sway over the daily lives of farmers,” said first-time attendee and Dane County Farmers Union member Ryan Hellenbrand. “The issues we covered today, like clean water and farmland preservation, are extremely important for farmers to be able to maintain their livelihoods, and non-partisan redis-

tricting is important for preserving the ability to come to consensus, a process which is critical to a vibrant and thriving democracy.”

Hellenbrand looks forward to more Farm & Rural Lobby Days in the future, noting, “It is incredibly important to engage with our elected officials at all levels, and the WFU Farm and Rural Lobby day provides a great communal atmosphere for us to come together and voice our concerns.”

WFU members will have the opportunity to lobby again this fall, when hundreds of farmers from throughout the country will gather in Washington, D.C. for the National Farmers Union

WHAT IS POWER OF ATTORNEY? A power of attorney, or POA, is a document that enables an individual to appoint a person or organization to manage his or her affairs should this individual become unable to do so. According to the National Caregivers Library, POA is granted to an “attorneyin-fact” or “agent” to give a person the legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated “principal.” The laws for creating a power of attorney vary depending on where a person lives, but there are some general similarities regardless of geography.
