Two people were pronounced dead after an accident in the Town of Grantsburg. Burnett County Dispatch received a call Dec. 28 for a semi versus automobile on State highway 70 at Williams Road in the town of Grantsburg, according to the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office.

Micaela Schneider, 22, Plover and Olivia Johnson, 22, St. Paul, Minn. were traveling westbound in a 2004 Honda Accord around 3 p.m. The preliminary investigation states the driver, Schneider, lost control of the vehicle and entered the path of the semi, which was travelling eastbound on highway 70.

There were no significant injuries to the driver and passenger of the semi.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2004 Gold Honda Accord was travelling westbound on State Highway 70. The semi was travelling eastbound on State Highway 70. It appears that the driver of the Honda lost control and travelled into the path of the oncoming semi and was struck by the semi.

The Grantsburg Fire Department, North Ambulance, Burnett County High-

way Department, Burnett County Medical Examiner, Wisconsin State Patrol, Karl Anderson’s Towing, Bruce’s Auto along with the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.

This crash is still under investigation.

Sheriff Tracy Finch said, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those involved.”

The Foxhole Bar & Lounge is the fundraising arm of the American Legion Post 185 in Grantsburg. It was dubbed The Foxhole since its creation in 1919. The Grantsburg Historical Society building in Grantsburg used to be a church before it became the original location of the legion when it was created by World War I veterans.

The basement of that building became known as The Foxhole, where veterans would go hang out, drink beer and play cards.

The name of the building stuck when the Legion was moved to its current location in the 70s.

Legion member, Duke Tucker, explained that The Foxhole has been making some changes starting with hiring Angie Baker as the official manager. Baker explained that what they do at The Foxhole is unique. Her main goal is to change the image that the Foxhole has received in the past to make it a more family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

PASSING OF THE AXE IN WEBB LAKE In January, Ben Keup was retiring as the Webb Lake Fire Chief and they honored him with a golden axe to commemorate his years of service to the community. The gold of the axe represents Keup’s status as chief. Keup handed the reins as chief over to Mike Hemquist.

BURNETT STUDENT TO COMPETE AT STATE The Annual Burnett County Conservation Poster Contest was held on Jan. 29. The contest was open to kids kindergarten aged through 12th grade. The theme for 2019 was ‘Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper.’ If the kids win at the county level, they then advance to the area level (11 northwest counties) and then on to state. Burnett

County’s winners were Selah Drysinski (middle division) and Aletta Bergman (junior division).

Bergman took second while Drysinski took first at the area level.

WOOD LAKE CAMP PERMIT WITHDRAWN In March of this year, the conditional use permit for the proposed Wood Lake Bible Camp/Resort was pulled by the Kinsellas. The Kinsellas had purchased 234 acres of what used to be the Wood Lake Bible Camp. They told their office manager to tell Towne, the Land Services Director, to pull their permit during the public hearing held in March. They would not provide the office manager with any details on why they pulled the permit. The Kinsellas themselves did not attend the public hearing on their permit.

During the meeting, the committee asked the permit applicant, Jeff Sventek, to have a consultant do an environmental assessment for the proposed campsite and the impact it might have on the lake. Patrick Hansen, who has been leading the opposition to the campground, said that he hopes the permit being pulled

will lead to a conversation between the Kinsellas and the other property owners on Big Wood Lake.

DRIVER IN ROUNDABOUT ACCIDENT DIES A WEEK LATER On April 5, 61-year-old David Friel of Finlayson, Minn., was fleeing a traffic stop in his truck at about 90 mph when the truck struck the curb of the roundabout in Siren, went over the middle of the roundabout and came to a stop. Siren Police Officer Aaron Bentley approached the stalled vehicle and asked Friel if he had been drinking and he responded with, yes. Two trauma nurses arrived on the scene to assist Friel with his injuries but he became belligerent and resisted. He was airlifted to North Memorial and was pronounced dead seven days later.

RIVER ASSOCIATION CONCERNED OVER PROPOSED CAFO In May, the River Association shared their concerns over the proposal to build a 7,500-sow farrowing Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) in Trade Lake. The Fish Lake Wildlife Complex is a mere 1-mile from the proposed site while the Canute Creek Flowage, which flows into the Trade River, is only 2-miles west of the site. They have a major concern about the CAFO when the primary economic engine of Burnett County is tourism and trees. If allowed, CAFOs will take over Wisconsin’s small, diversified family farms. The proposed CAFO will have three large barns on a parcel of about 38 acres with 7,500 sows plus their piglets. These pigs will produce approximately between 13,687,500 and 30,112,500 gallons of toxic, liquid manure annually. This manure will be near a high-value wetland complex and will be spread on fields within miles of the St. Croix Riverway. This area of Wisconsin thrives on the water and woods and people in the community are scared at the thought of contaminated wells, overwhelming odors, increased traffic and the devaluation of their land.

HELICOPTER CRASH KILLS SIREN MAN In the early morning of June 28, a medical helicopter crashed at the Brainerd Airport killing two and injuring one. The pilot, Tim McDonald of Siren and flight nurse Deb Schott lost their lives in the accident and paramedic Josh Duda was taken to a hospital in Brainerd to treat his injuries. Tim leaves behind his wife, Crystal, and their four children. The FAA reported that the crash had happened on the helicopter’s approach to the airport. Brainerd Airport manager, Steven Wright, confirmed the helicopter crashed on the ground next to the runway.

150 YEARS IN SERVICE OF CHRIST CELEBRATED Grace Baptist Church in Grantsburg turned 150 years old in August. The church was filled with people of all ages and from all distances to celebrate the occasion. The church’s milestone was marked by two services on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11. Saturday night’s service included prayer, hymn singing, sharing of memories, recognizing mission work, remembering weddings celebrated at the church and an extensive video that outline the history of the church.

The church was full of photos and other historical artificats such as a carriage, trunk and bible from the mid-1800s in Sweden, which is where the church came from.

DANBURY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CELEBRATES 100 YEARS On Aug. 4, the Danbury United Methodist Church celebrated 100 years of operation. They celebrated its centennial with Bishop Hee-Soo Jung preaching and joining Pastor Eddie Crise in serving communion at the service of worship. Following the service was a fellowship brunch. On Saturday, Sept. 14, the church set up tents on Water Street and asked the community to join them for a light meal and an evening of gospel.

Members of Danbury Fire and Rescue grilled and served food while Glory Train presented the Gospel in song and witness. Pastor Crise led the next day’s Sunday worship in the 100-year-old church. Former pastors participated in the service and many former members and friends of the church stayed for coffee and fellowship afterwards.

MARIE BERNATZ NAMED FIRST RESPONDER OF THE YEAR In the month of October, which celebrates National First Responders Day, Marie Bernatz from the Town of Scott was named First Responder of the Year for the 73rd Assembly District. State Representative, Nick Milroy, presented the award to Bernatz during a ceremony at the State Capitol. Milroy concluded the ceremony by saying, “First responders are caring and compassionate and I’m thrilled to honor Marie for her courage and sacrifice.”

‘IT’S ALL ABOUT DOING GOOD FOR OTHER PEOPLE’ Over 45 years ago, James Smith’s mom got him into collecting pull tabs from cans. He keeps himself busy collecting tabs when not at work at DSI in Siren. He has a collection box both at home and at work. The hub of his operation is his place of residence at Shady Knoll. He first sorts the tabs and then cleans them and removes the sharp edges. The tabs then get boxed up and store until he brings them to the McDonalds in Pine City, Minn. From there they are sent to the Ronald McDonald House in the Twin Cities. In 2019, he has collected over 700,000 pull tabs. The Twin Cities Ronald McDonald House has raised more than $800,000 with their pop can tabs program. Smith will be turning 66 and has no plans on stopping his collecting because it’s ‘all about doing good for other people.’

It is just a bunch of birds to start

he 12 Days of Christmas are upon us. In holiday traditions, the first day of Christmas is Dec. 25 and the 12th day is Jan. 2. I’m sure you’ve all heard the popular Christmas carol about the all of the presents purchased by the “true love” for the nearly two week period.

Over the years, the gifts mentioned in the beloved carol have been analyzed and data compiled on the exact total cost. This year it will cost you just under $39,000 for all 12 days.

During my travels over Christmas, I picked up a copy of the La Crosse Tribune and saw a spread outlining how much each gift costs as well as what it cost last year.

There is an episode of “The Office” that outlines the absurdity of the 12 days shopping list.

Sentinel The first couple of days are a bunch of birds. In the episode, Editor salesman Andy Bernard buys the Jonathan Richie gifts for the office secretary, Erin Hannon.

Hannon goes out to her car every day and finds new birds in her car. They begin to ruin her life by pecking at her and one of the birds even starts pulling out her hair to build a nest. Great stuff.

Back to the prices, it starts with a partridge in a pear tree which will cost you around $210, a reduction from last year. Two turtle doves stayed the same as last year at $181.50 and that is oddly the same price as three French hens. Four calling birds will set you back about $600, no market change for those birds.

However, the price of gold rings has surged and five of them will cost you $825, $75 more expensive than last year. Also, the price of geese went up over 7%.

Seven swans a-swimming (the priciest gift on the list at $13,125), eight maids a-milking, nine ladies dancing, ten lords a-leaping all stayed at the same price. However, the musicians in the group – 1 pipers piping and 12 drummers drumming both got a 0.8% pay raise.

Overall the gifts will cost you $38,993.59, a 0.2% increase from 2018 when the price was $38,296.03.

CHERNOBYL I had quite a bit of downtime over the last few days and when that happens I become a couch potato.

I finished the miniseries “Chernobyl” on HBO last week. It documents a group of Soviet scientists attempting to solve the issue of the explosion of a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986. I learned two things from the fivepart series.

The first is that the Soviets are bad guys and the second is that they do a lot of lying.

This leads to my resolutions for next year. They are simple but possible - be more present in thinking about the future and don’t purposely cause anyone harm. Seems simple enough, right?

Tomorrow’s not as bad as it seems

id you have a good Christmas? Were you able to spend some time with friends and family? Did you survive the umpteenth retelling of that embarrassing story from your childhood?

I hope the answers to all of those questions was “yes.” By the way, that embarrassing story really has aged well!

I was thinking about traditions in the days before Christmas when my wife and daughters From the were busy in the Publisher’s kitchen devising a Desk game plan for the meals and treats Tom Stangl for the family gathering. Traditions are rather polarizing things, always have been. There are those who believe that strict adherence to traditions is the glue that holds families and society together.

Others believe we need to lighten up about these things and be open to new ideas.

I think I fall somewhere in between. Like many young people, I rebelled against any and all things familiar. As I aged, becoming a husband, father and grandfather, I grew to appreciate and endorse the

traditions of my family.

In fact, I have become an aficionado of the past. I love to watch old movies on Turner Classic Movies, enjoy tried and true recipes of my family and my wife’s family and enjoy listening to the old holiday classics when radio changes its format in November. Viewed through my nostalgic lenses, I think 1940 would have been a pretty good Christmas, just before World War II. Of course, I realize there was the Great Depression, diseases and a lot of injustice going on as well.

I’m observing the era through the movies and music and think it was pretty cool. But I digress…

One of the challenges my wife and daughters faced this year was how to present a meal that honored traditions without making my daughter sick. My oldest has to be gluten and dairy free since a diagnosis this fall necessitated the change.

Thankfully, the internet has made gathering this information very easy and stores are beginning to carry items to help persons with dietary issues. In an afternoon of consulting the family recipe books, Pinterest and other websites, a plan was devised and executed.

I’m glad to say they did a great job. We enjoyed two meals on Christmas Eve and everyone had

something they could eat without doubling up on the number of dishes on the menu. There were also plenty of baked goodies as well that fit the bill.

In the end, the food was secondary to the company, like it should be each and every year. I imagine that some new traditions will be created along the way. Hopefully in years to come they will be enjoyed almost as much as that embarrassing story.

As we get ready for a new year and new decade, I hope you all are able to embrace the past and the present in your daily life. There’s something to be said about honoring where you came from while being open to new possibilities.

As great as the good old days may have been, there’s always something new that can be just as awesome. Besides, if you aren’t open to at least trying new things, you could easily miss out on something you want to have be a part of your life.

The Burnett County Sentinel was the county’s first newspaper when Matthew Westcott began publishing on Feb. 19, 1875. The Sentinel continued weekly until its building and presses were destroyed by fire in 1909. The business was sold to its competitor. The Journal changed its name to “Journal and Sentinel”, but later reverted to the Journal of Burnett County. When the Journal folded in 1962, Wilbur A. Nelson revived the Burnett County Sentinel. Following his death in 1975, his wife, Marjorie Nelson and son, Gary Nelson operated it until Feb. 1, 1994, when it was purchased by Mainstream Publications. It was then purchased by Eugene Johnson on Dec. 1, 1998.

State Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly had dozens of his political blog posts removed

Following his appointment to the bench, Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly had dozens of his blog posts pulled down, including ones likening the nation’s safety net to indentured servitude and complaining President Obama’s 2012 re-election was a win for socialism, same-sex marriage, recreational marijuana and tax hikes.

The move in 2016 came after fellow conservative Rebecca Bradley was criticized in her state Supreme Court race that spring for old college newspaper columns on homosexuality and AIDS. Still, a Kelly spokesman said the justice asked the person running the blog “Hang Together” to pull the posts to avoid giving the impression that he was actively commenting on political issues while on the bench.

Charles Nichols also argued the justice wasn’t trying to hide anything, noting Kelly listed the blog among his past publications on his application for an appointment to the state Supreme Court.

“They are distinctly political,” Nichols said of the posts. “He was worried that people would see that and think that these were recent. He didn’t want it to seem he was out there discussing his political views while he was on the court.”

Considering the move came after Bradley’s writings became an issue, One Wisconsin Now Deputy Director Mike Browne countered Kelly was trying to shield his views from the voters he would eventually face.

The group recovered Kelly’s blog posts using a website archive and shared them with WisPolitics.com following an inquiry from the news outlet.

“What’s troubling is that Dan Kelly is intentionally trying to hide from the public his far-right views on important issues, including some that could very well end up before him in court,” Browne said.

Kelly, who was a private attorney and president of the Milwaukee Federalist Society when he was tapped, drew flak for his past writings after his application to the state Supreme Court became public ahead of his 2016 appointment.

That included a chapter from a 2014 book in which he opined affirmative action was morally comparable to slavery. During his introductory news conference with Scott Walker that summer, Kelly insisted his personal views wouldn’t influence how he performs as a state justice.

Not long after, he asked for the blog posts to be pulled down.

Originally, the blog “Hang Together” included posts from those who hailed themselves as “Christians, conservatives and Americans.” It is now solely run by Greg Forster, a visiting assistant professor of faith and culture at Trinity International University in suburban Chicago. He didn’t respond to an email from WisPolitics.com this week.

Kelly’s writing covered a gamut of topics, including President Obama’s reelection in 2012. In addition to bemoaning it as a win for socialism, same-sex marriage, recreational marijuana and tax increases, he agreed with another writer that Mitt Romney losing was partly because “the church has failed to play a robust role in the civic life of our society.”

In the lead-up to the 2012 election, Kelly opined that a central characteris-

tic of radical Islam was misogyny, but charged the media refused to cover it.

“The rights of women take a back seat to a higher value (in their minds) — promoting and defending the multi-culturalism imperative,” he wrote.

And he disagreed with another writer who had suggested that Planned Parenthood and NARAL “would accept our message of life if someone just explained to them that abortions destroy human beings.”

“They know abortion takes the life of an unborn child, and if they said otherwise, they know they would be laughed out of the room,” Kelly wrote. “It is not knowledge or rationality they lack, but a correct ordering of values.”

Kelly often posted about poverty, regularly referring to the social safety net as “a program of involuntary servitude” as he did in an Aug. 11, 2013, post.

He added programs that transfer wealth don’t “confer dignity on the recipient,” but “steal it.” Kelly wrote in the piece a large segment of welfare recipients expects to be “supported by the government as a matter of right.”

He earlier wrote in an Oct. 23, 2012, post that, “However much they receive, though, it’s never enough because the ‘rich’ always have so much more and, doggone it, the disparity between me and thee just shouldn’t be that great.

This is how we breed envy: Teach people they have a right to what belongs to others. So the beneficiaries descend to reliance on the state, and envy of their fellow man.”

Kelly added those who “give up their hard-won income to someone else” grow to resent being made to pay “their fair share.”

Wisconsin’s Job Market Tilts Toward HigherWage, Higher-Education Occupations A decade after the Great Recession slammed the brakes on the U.S. economy, employment in Wisconsin has recovered and surged almost 72,000 jobs higher than its pre-recession peak.

However, that resurgence has not been uniform across sectors of the state’s economy, with higher-paying occupations requiring more education generally growing much more than lower-paying ones requiring less education.

A recent Wisconsin Policy Forum report analyzed 2018 occupational employment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics going back to May 2008, when total employment last peaked in Wisconsin prior to the recession. This included a look at statewide trends among the 22 major occupational groups tracked by the bureau.

The overall picture is clear: employment in the 11 highest-paying occupational groups — which each pay median wages

of at least $42,000 annually — has grown by a combined 114,870 statewide during that time.

Meanwhile, employment in the 11 lowest-paying occupational groups paying median wages of less than $42,000 has declined by a combined 42,990.

Four of the five occupational groups that added the most jobs pay median annual wages of at least $60,000: business and financial operations, computer and mathematical, healthcare practitioners and technical, and management.

These occupations also typically require higher levels of education and training than many of the occupations in decline. One notable exception was personal care and service occupations, which have shown the most growth overall and pay relatively low wages.

On the other end of the spectrum, employment has fallen by the largest numbers in five occupational groups that each pay

median wages under $36,000 annually. These include office and administrative support workers, sales and related jobs, building and grounds cleaning and maintenance positions, healthcare support jobs, and transportation and materials employees.

As our previous research has pointed out, Wisconsin lags other states in attracting the most educated workers, who tend to be more mobile than other populations. Since attracting college graduates from other states seems to be a bigger problem for Wisconsin than retaining those who grow up here, strategies for addressing that issue are likely needed.

“This is how we breed resentment: Take from those who create and give it to people who don’t,” Kelly wrote. “Consequently, the providers resent both the state and their fellow man.”

In that same post, Kelly wrote, “Poverty is not a group problem, it is an individual problem.”

Later, Kelly wrote he believed addressing poverty needed to “become a core part of the church’s life.”

In the days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned state bans on gay marriage and upheld the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act, Kelly charged the majority justices in both cases had overstepped their bounds and “We, today, no longer have a democracy, much less a republic.”

“If we allow this usurpation to pass unremedied, if we do not pick up the gauntlet, then our ancestors and offspring will condemn us as the generation that surrendered the last, best hope of mankind,” Kelly declared.

The posts that were pulled down covered a period of 2012 through 2015 and could become an issue in the upcoming spring race as he faces Dane County Judge Jill Karofsky and Marquette University Law School Prof. Ed Fallone for a full 10-year term on the bench.

For some, the holidays are a time of joy and excitement, while for others the holidays can be a difficult time - especially if grieving the loss of a loved one. Regional Hospice Services hosted a special evening on Dec. 10 at Burnett Medical Center in Grantsburg to commemorate and honor loved ones at their Tree of Life Ceremony.

The special evening included a time for reflection and sharing memories, reading the names of loved ones passed, and enjoying music of the season. Ornaments for the tree read, “Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure.

You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.”

Bybee was the officer involved during the Siren shooting spree in 2010 Following the Decade in Review article featuring commendations given to community members following a shooting spree in Siren, the Sentinel received a request to hear more about the officer involved in the shooting.

That officer’s name was Sheriff Deputy Ryan Bybee.

The suspect’s name in the shootout was Michael Ritchie. He was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and was shooting at vehicles on Highway 70 in Siren just before noon. After fleeing the scene, Bybee observed the vehicle going northbound on Highway 35 near County Road D and initiated a traffic stop.

After being stopped, Ritchie exited his vehicle and began firing at Bybee.

Bybee was struck in the left hand and

lower arm with pellets from Ritchie’s shotgun. Bybee immediately returned fire and struck Ritchie, ending the shooting spree. Ritchie was pronounced dead before the arrival of a medical helicopter.

Bybee, who was a nine-year veteran of the Burnett County Sheriff’s Department, was treated for his injuries and was released from the hospital. Bybee told the Sentinel after the incident, “I want to thank the citizens of Burnett County- they did a great job. They assisted in directing traffic around the crime scenes, protecting evidence, and providing law enforcement with a description and direction of travel of the suspect after he had left Siren.”

This year was the first Shop with a Cop event in Burnett County. The Sheriff’s Office along with local police departments hosted the event Dec. 14.

36 children and about 45 police officers and adult chapperones went to Walmart in Rice Lake where the children were given the opportunity to spend $100 and pick out winter clothing. The whole group then went out for lunch before returning home.

The Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook numerous thank you’s to the community for making Shop with a Cop successful this year. “We are very thankful for the

Along with new management, there was also a change to their food and hours. The Foxhole is now open daily at 11 a.m. for lunch specials where they serve specialty burgers made with fresh ground beef and bacon from Daeflers, a local butcher shop in Frederic. The lunch specials change weekly, but one day that remains the same is Fridays with their new fish fry special. Some weeks have a theme to them, for instance, the week after New Year’s will be healthy week where their lunch specials will revolve around healthy foods such as salads.

The Foxhole has also recently partnered up with Burnett Dairy to begin selling fresh Burnett Dairy pizzas that are made the same day.

Tucker also took the time to explain the slight change with their meat raffle that they host. If anybody has a nonprofit, the Foxhole will do the meat raffle on their behalf, the nonprofit just has to provide a person or two to help with tickets. All of the proceeds after the cost of the meat raffle will go straight to that nonprofit.

running. It would be free of charge and would help promote firearm safety and marksmanship.

Renovations have taken part in the change at The Foxhole as well. With the new bathroom renovations well on their way, they are very close to being complete. Tucker stated that some renovation goals in the future would be to add a new entryway off the north side of the building, placing a window looking outside in the bar and laying new flooring in the kitchen.

One of the main establishment goals that The Foxhole has is to bring new faces and families into their building while making them feel welcome. The staff members have new shirts with words on the back that reads, integrity, honor and service to community.

To make it more kid-friendly, Tucker said that the one thing he wants to try is being able to give a root beer float to any kids that come in the door with their families. It’s something he’s been doing on his own, but he would like to get the rest of the staff involved in doing it as well.

As the other goal, Tucker said, “The primary goal I have when somebody walks through the door, I don’t care if it’s a patron or a member or employee, they should have a good time when they come here.�

Three students arrested, suspected of making school threat MARSHFIELD— Three students have been arrested on suspicion of making a threat to Marshfield High School.

An 18-year-old male and two 17-yearold boys were taken to the Wood County Jail Wednesday.

Authorities say a “specific threat� was found in a bathroom stall Tuesday leading school officials to sent students home early as a precaution.

Police are asking the Wood County district attorney to charge the students with making terroristic threats.

School district officials say the threatening messages were made to disrupt classes and close the school. Officials have not released details of the messages. Classes resumed Wednesday.

Abby Alderman is Grantsburg’s student of the week. She is a senior this year and is the daughter of Mike and Carol Alderman. Abby is a leader in both choir and theater. She sang in the Wisconsin State Honor Choir this year.

She is in the USCVMA Honor Choir, vocal jazz and swing choir and puts in many hours helping with the summer school musical.

Abby has a very strong work ethic and is always helpful and willing to put in extra time to make things better. She brings positivity to everything she does. Abby participates on the Girls Golf team as well as theater productions.

Her hobbies include singing, acting and attending as many athletic events as she can during the week while using the weekends to spend time with her friends and family. After graduating, she is going to attend Minnesota State University and double major in English Education and Theater.

Jaidyn Jewell is Siren’s student of the week this week. She is a junior this year and is the daughter of Heather and Jacob Herwick and Tom Jewell. Jaidyn enjoys playing basketball, volleyball and track for the Siren Dragons.

Other school activities she participates in are FCCLA, student council, National Honor Society, swing choir and honors choir. She is always willing to help other students and she is always seen with a smile. After graduating, Jaidyn would like to attend college and have a career in the medical field such as physical therapy, occupational therapy or nursing.

She plays a big part every year in helping the Red Cross with their blood drive at the school. Her role model is her grandpa Lannyhe has taught her the difference in knowing everything and being wise. He also taught her the meaning of putting family first.

Daisy Dorn is Webster’s student of the week.

She is a senior this year and is the daughter of Ronald and Charissa Dorn. Daisy does a wonderful job juggling school, sports, work and being involved in many different clubs.

She always tries hard in class and is a good leader. Daisy participates in softball and cheerleading. Outside of sports, she is a part of the band, choir, National Honor Society, student council, AODA and AWANA. Some of her hobbies outside of school include watching movies with friends and being with family. After graduating, Daisy would like to attend St. Scholastica for pharmacy. The trait she values most in herself is how independent she is.

2019 is over! You may have many feelings when you reflect on the year you leave behind and think about the new year’s goals. When we think about things we want to change about ourselves, some of us may squeeze some extra skin, flick a cigarette ash or spend that last $20 bill like its monopoly money. However, it is important to self-reflect so you can choose realistic and maintainable goals for the new year.

Coming from a Wellness Coach, Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, I recommend you don’t have the goal of, “I’m going to lose 30lbs this year”. Instead, focus on what it takes to lose weight. It can be as simple as “I’m going to eat more fruits and vegetables and less chips” or “I’m going to drink more water than soda”.

Set small, daily, weekly and/or monthly goals on top of your yearly goals to help decrease any anxiety.

How many of us have said, “I’m going to quit smoking”? Quitting any kind of addiction is difficult but not impossible. Set a quit date, tell others about it and stick to it. If your significant other is also interested in quitting, quit together! Another option is to seek out help from your local clinics, hospitals or hotlines.

Who has made the yearly goal of paying off debt and saving money? It sounds simple until an unexpected expense comes up. Saving doesn’t have to be a hundred dollars at once. By saving $1 a week for a whole year you will save $52. If you saved $5 a week for a whole year it equals $260. It might not sound like much but something is always better than nothing.

In the end it can be easy or difficult to reflect on the past year but it is important to do in order to move forward into the new year with a positive mind set and realistic goals.

For all the many years I have been doing this column, I have never missed the paper deadline to get the news in on time. Guess there is a first for everything, but with the center closed many days, having company and going to the cities three times, I completely missed the dead line. Sorry!

I hope everybody had a nice Christmas with family and friends. My family had a wonderful time even if we had to fight Mother Nature. We had to get our son back to the cities and we didn’t know whether to fight ice or snow.

KAMO, the Joe and good people AN OUTDOORSMAN’S JOURNAL MARK WALTERS

Hello friends, In mid-December, Kids and Mentors Outdoors (KAMO) held its annual “Joe” Learn to Hunt at the MacKenzie Environmental Learning Center and the State Game Farm at Poynette. This week’s column will help describe what it takes and some of the happy moments for the 16 young hunters and especially the mentors and kitchen help that make it happen!

Friday, Dec. 13 High 24, low 11 I am the president of KAMO, but in reality, do very little of the work to make this incredible experience happen.

Today would be day one and maybe a half dozen of our young hunters were able to take some time off from school for a bonus afternoon hunt. The rest would arrive from all over Wisconsin after dark for the weekend.

Josh Brodeur is perhaps 30 and is the son of Bob and Linda Brodeur who are the two folks responsible for starting and running our Lake Wisconsin Chapter of KAMO which is the Poynette/ Lodi/Rio area.

This afternoon Josh would be sitting with his son Landon and an 8-point buck that was very much in the rut gave Landon a shot. That is how the first and largest deer of the Joe was harvested.

The Brodeur’s were friends of mine while growing up, and Bob is one of the main get-it-done people for the Joe. Our cooks for the start of this

hunt would be Jeff and Patti Rouse. They order the food for six meals for 44 people a meal. They cook on day one and Jeff returned on day two to help. We appoint kids to help do the dishes for each meal, but the cooks have a bigtime job. Patti was one of my best friends in high school.

Saturday, Dec. 14 High 34, low 22 Alfonzo Jones, “AJ,” is a member of the Baraboo River Chapter of KAMO, a retired Air Force member, and after retirement, furthered his education and became a chef. Last night after the Wisconsin Dells girls’ basketball team narrowly defeated the Adams’ team, AJ made it to camp with his daughters Madison and Megane.

The Jones’ team would be our chief cooks for the duration and these juniors in high school were phenomenal. I met AJ while on a pheasant hunt a long time ago and he is the brother-in-law to Rick Miotke, who is the President of the Baraboo River Chapter and I have known Rick for most of my life.

Jon Hilmer has been in KAMO since day one and before. I met Jon at a jamboree for sturgeon spearing back in 2006. I shared my idea for KAMO with him and we have been buddy’s ever since.

Jon came up with our motto “Tradition Forward.”

Jon has been mentoring a young man named Cameron Crawford from Baraboo who is 11. They have been having a great year together on one-on-one adventures and today, Cameron harvested his first deer which was a six-point buck.

Rick Miotke is the boss of this operation and gets a ton done to make it happen. Rick is a part time pastor at his church and would be hunting with Natalie Trudell who is 11. I would be hunting with her cousin Jevon Trudell, both would be on their first ever hunts.

I did as much with Jevon this morning to prepare him for his hunt as I could as we sat in a turkey blind in a mature forest. A half hour after first light I told Jevon that I was going to blow on my buck grunt call and that a buck might come in really quick.

I blew on the call, a buck came in really quick, and Jevon pointed at the buck and said, “There’s a deer.” The buck ran away.

Our young hunters harvested 11 deer. On Saturday night they played bingo, and in the championship round a 270 was given out to the winner.

By the end of the weekend, and as in past years, this group of 16 kids were great friends and when they were not hunting they were playing outside.

On a serious note, our website is www.kamokids.org. Our group is strong, but we lack enough members per chapter to achieve all of our goals. I grew up in Poynette and this chapter, Lake Wisconsin really could use a few new members to come in at whatever level of participation they choose.

In the very near future we will be running a long-term ad in the Poynette/Lodi Enterprise to reach out for help.

Kosloski and Dragons earn first victory SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL

Top sports stories of 2019 Every year in late December the Sentinel editorial staff combs through all 52 issues from throughout the year looking for the top stories. The teams making it to state competition in their given sport is an easy decision. The difficulty lies in rendering a decision for the remaining spots.

After saying that, here is the Sentinel’s version of the top sport stories of 2019.

CLAYTON – Before the year was out, the Siren boys basketball team was in the win column.

The Dragons came up empty on their first six chances to give interim coach Rick Kosloski his first win but left no room to chance on Friday. They hit five 3-pointers in the first half of a 69-42 win over Prairie Farm to end the skid prior to the start of 2020.

“We played a better game on both offense and defense,” Kosloski said. “(We) controlled the boards and reduced our turnovers.”

But long-range shooting put the Dragons ahead early.

BLACK RIVER FALLS – A winning record will need to be earned on the road.

The Hayward girls hockey team starts a six-game road stretch to open play in January this Saturday with a 4-6 overall record. Wins at Cloquet-Esko-Carlton on Saturday and at North Shore on Jan. 9 would put the Hurricanes back at the .500 mark for the first time since late November, though they had an even record within reach last weekend.

The Hurricanes stretched their win streak to three games with wins over Fox Cities and Rock County in a tournament at Black River Falls on Friday, improving to 4-5 overall. But, a one-goal loss to Eau Claire in the final prevented them from reaching 5-5 to start 2020.

Johnson and Nichols’ seasons end at State Frederic’s Nolan Johnson and Siren’s Taedon Nichols’ season came to end at the state wrestling meet. Johnson ended up finishing at state with an 0-1 record and ended the season with a total of 35-10.

Nichols’ day at state ended with a broken collarbone after competing in the placement match against a foe from Northwestern. Nichols ended his season as a

freshman with a 40-5 overall record and placed sixth in the 113-pound weight class at state.

SIREN – The WSFLG boys hockey team has another week before having another chance.

On Jan. 9, the Blizzard again aim for their first win of the season, in their second shot at a team that sealed their winless 2019 portion of the schedule. They opened 2020 play against Northwest, which defeated them 9-1 on Saturday and dropped the Blizzard’s record to 0-9.

The Icemen held a 47-6 advantage in shots over WSFLG, giving the Blizzard their third loss in as many days at Barron Ice Arena.

The Badgers ended up completing a fourth-consecutive win over the Hawkeyes with a final score of 24-22. The Badgers improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten.

Pirates capture another Regional title The Grantsburg Pirates softball team won their 17th regional championship with it being their 14th consecutive regional win. They played the Chequa-

megon Screaming Eagles in the final game of regionals and with a solid defense, beat them with a score of 14-7.

They moved on to host Turtle Lake/ Clayton for the right to head to the sectional game in Shell Lake.

RIVER FALLS – Both the Luck-Frederic-Grantsburg-Siren and Spooner-Webster wrestling teams may look forward to invitationals not hosted by River Falls.

They were among the 13-team Division 1 field of the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic last weekend and the home team prevented either LFGS or the Rails from returning with a 1stplace trophy. The Wildcats got top-3 finishes in four divisions and totaled 280.5 points to top the team standings while LFGS was sixth with 132 and Spooner-Webster was 12th with 67 points.

LFGS got a runner-up finish from Taedon Nichols in the 120 division, accounting for 38 team points. He followed a first-round bye with a win in 25 seconds over Tristan Pankratz

(Chequamegon) and won the quarterfinal match in 5:15 over Hugh Wiese (Rhinelander).

Nichols reached the division final by earning a 1-0 win over Josiah Berg (Boyceville) in the semifinal, but lost a close 7-5 decision to Tanner Gerber (Cameron) in the 1st-place match.

LFGS also got a pair of 4th-place finishes to help bolster its team total and threaten for a top-5 spot in the standings. Landyn Johnson (138) won his first three matches, two by pin.

He defeated Max Schmitt (Spring Valley-Elmwood) in 2:27 and Thomas Moede (Glenwood City) in 5:00, before winning a 13-10 final over Jared Sweno (Marathon).

Johnson’s path to the 1st-place match was derailed by Zack Clark (St. Croix Falls), who won the semifinal match 4-3. Johnson then lost by major decision

to Mason Tylee (Amery) in the 3rdplace match.

Dominic Caroon (195) defeated Shane Schiff (Northwestern) in 1:40 to advance to his division quarterfinal, which he won in 1:13 over Luke Fischer (Osseo-Augusta-Fall Creek). But he was defeated by pin in 1:17 by Gavin Tegels (Cadott) to reach the 3rd-place match, which he had to withdraw from due to injury.

Nolan Johnson (106) added a 7th-place finish for LFGS and Gavin Fredericks (145) was 10th.

Ian Perrine led Spooner-Webster with a 4th-place finish in the 285 division.

He defeated Cameron Blount (Marathon) in 15 seconds and Keegan Plemon (Boyceville) in 1:32 before winning the quarterfinal in 1:34 over Trent Orlowski (Northwestern).

But in the semifinal, Tanner Gaffey

(St. Croix Falls) pinned Perrine in 2:49 to send him to the 3rd-place match, where he lost in 46 seconds to Josh Briggs (Cadott).

Carter Melton (182) had the Rails’ other top-10 finish, placing eighth in his division. After a win in 3:11 over Tanner Zepczyk (River Falls) and a 5-1 decision over Caden Weber (Regis-Altoona), he lost by technical fall to Logan Shramek (Blair-Taylor) and went to the consolation round.

Melton secured a top-10 finish by defeating Kees Hoogland (Phillips) in a 5-1 decision and went to sudden victory with Blake Flach (Shell Lake) but lost.

In the 7th-place match, Melton lost a 4-1 decision to Jack Nelson (Unity).

LFGS hosts Bruce on Jan. 9 and Spooner-Webster hosts Ashland next Tuesday.

Chenal brothers hope to help Badgers beat Ducks SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL

PASADENA, Cali. – John and Leo Chenal can help break a little-known skid.

The two Grantsburg graduates and the University of Wisconsin-Madison football team take the Rose Bowl field on Wednesday, seeking a postseason victory over Oregon. It would mean securing a top-10 spot in the final college football rankings and prevent a three-game losing streak to the Ducks.

Oregon has defeated Wisconsin in their last two meetings, including their prior Rose Bowl matchup in 2012, which the Ducks won 45-38. They also won the prior matchup – a 31-28 decision at Oregon in 2001.

That game still ranks as the highest-scoring Rose Bowl in history.

Prior to that, the Badgers won all three of their games against Oregon dating back to 1977.

Wednesday’s winner also will move ahead of the other in all-time Rose Bowl wins.

Brady Kosloski sank three 3-pointers in the first half while Nathan Kosloski and Riley Churchill handled a bulk of the scoring. Nathan Kosloski scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and Churchill added 13 to get Siren out to a double-digit lead before halftime.

Prairie Farm limited the deficit with its own long-distance shooting, getting three first-half 3-pointers from Dusty Harren but the rest of the team managed just 16 points and the Dragons took a 14-point lead into the break.

Siren’s lead extended in the second half with stingier defense that limited Prairie Farm to 17 points and without a second-half 3-pointer. Just six of the Panthers’ second-half points were scored from the floor with the other 11 coming at the free throw line.

The Dragons, meanwhile, had eight players score after halftime. Brady and Nathan Kosloski had six points each while Churchilll and Russ Cook had five points each. Churchill finished with 18 points and Brady Kosloski had 15. The win improved their record to 1-6 overall heading into this Friday’s game at Bayfield.

“There is always room to improve but this is a good start after the Christmas break to put us on track for the rest of the season,” Rick Kosloski said.

The Dragons return home to host Webster on Jan. 10.

They’ve also been good against the pass this season, ranking second in the country with 19 interceptions while Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan is one of six quarterbacks in college football to throw at least 300 passes but throw four or fewer interceptions.

John Chenal – a fullback – has played in all 13 games for Wisconsin in his sophomore season, rushing for 66 yards on 18 carries and scoring a touchdown. He also has three catches for 15 yards.

Leo Chenal – a linebacker – has played in 10 games in his freshman season, totaling 20 tackles, including two for loss, with a fumble recovery.

Wednesday’s game between the No. 6 Ducks and No. 8 Badgers is scheduled for a 4 p.m.

Cashton Kapp had 38 saves for the Blizzard, who had similar success in their losses to Amery and Beaver Dam in the days prior.

WSFLG actually held an early lead in its opening game against Amery on Thursday. Logan Hopkins scored an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the game but the Blizzard were held scoreless for the remainder in an 8-2 loss.

The Warriors tied the game near the midway point of the period on the power play and the 1-1 score remained until the second.

Amery then scored three goals at even strength in the first eight minutes of the period and added

three more in a three-minute stretch soon after to take a 7-1 lead into the third.

Amery was up 8-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

The Golden Beavers closed the game with six goals in a seven-minute stretch of the third period, finishing with 13 goals at even strength.

Kapp had 34 saves and the Blizzard now have five consecutive chances at home to gain the elusive first win of the season. They host Ely on Jan. 10, Rice Lake and Chequamegon-Phillips-Butternut the following week then Baldwin-Woodville on Jan. 23.

Hayward overcame an early deficit and a 49-18 disadvantage in shots to earn a 2-1 win over Fox Cities in the opener last Friday.

Grantsburg’s Emma Quimby rejected 48 shots in the Hayward goal, including all 14 she faced in the third period to preserve the win.

After a scoreless first period, the Stars took a 1-0 lead with a goal at even strength and they held that advantage into the third.

But an early penalty against Hayward gave the Stars a power play and an opportunity for a two-goal lead.

However, Taylor Eytcheson put the Hurricanes on the board and tied the game with a shorthanded goal with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation.

The tie lasted until the final

two minutes of regulation, when Jerzy Petit scored the game-winning goal at even strength for Hayward. Quimby didn’t allow a game-tying goal in the final 90 seconds and the Hurricanes had their first consecutive wins of the season.

Taylor Eytcheson put the Hurricanes on the board and tied the game.

Hayward then obtained its first three-game win streak by defeating Rock County 4-2 in its other game on Friday. The Hurricanes outshot the Fury 33-24 and led for a majority of the game, getting two goals in the first period. Lily Eytcheson gave them a 1-0 with a goal at even strength, assisted

by Taylor Eytcheson and Riley Springer. Alex Pieterek added an-

other later in the period to break a 1-1 tie.

Lily Eytcheson put them up 3-1 with the lone goal of the second period and when the Fury pulled to within a goal at 3-2 with a score early in the third, Hayward responded with a goal from Riley Springer, assisted by Kennedy Sprenger.

Quimby had 22 saves for the Hurricanes.

Hayward’s chance to reach the .500 mark came on Saturday, against an undefeated Eau Claire team. Despite allowing only one goal, the Hurricanes were held scoreless and the Stars improved to 11-0-1 on the season. It was the fourth one-goal loss of the season for Hayward.

Saturday’s game in Minnesota is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

Packers barely beat Lions 23-20 to earn first-round bye LARRY LAGE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DETROIT—Aaron Rodgers was on the money when Green Bay needed him most, overcoming one of his worst games this season.

Rodgers threw a short and accurate pass to Aaron Jones, whose 31-yard reception set up Mason Crosby’s 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Packers to a 23-20 win over the Detroit Lions that earned them a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.

“We’re going to be a tough team to deal with in the playoffs,” Rodgers said.

The Packers (13-3) fell behind the last-place Lions by two touchdowns in the second quarter and didn’t lead until Crosby made his second game-winning kick against Detroit this season.

Green Bay won a fifth straight game despite Rodgers struggling for much of the afternoon. Rodgers was 27 of 55 for 323 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He connected on less than half of his attempts for the second

time this season and finished with his second-lowest rating of the year.

“Too many missed throws,” Rodgers acknowledged after throwing the most passes he has in 2019, tying the third-highest total of his career. “I felt good about the throws. That’s the crazy thing.

We were just a little bit off at times.

“When we had to make a play, we made the play.”

Detroit did not, following a season-long trend.

The Lions (3-12-1) closed with nine straight losses for their longest losing streak in a season since going 0-16 in 2008.

“This game was in some ways a microcosm of our season,” guard Graham Glasgow said. “We started out well and we were running the ball, but when it came to the second half and finishing the game, we didn’t pull it out.”

David Blough was 12 of 29 for 122 yards with an interception — and a 19-yard touchdown reception — filling in for Matthew Stafford, who had a season-ending back injury.

Despite playing only for

pride, the Lions looked as if they were more motivated to win early in the game against a team with a lot at stake.

“We definitely started flat in every phase,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged.

And with nothing to lose, Detroit scored on a trick play midway through the first quarter. Blough handed off to receiver Danny Amendola, who threw back across the field to the rookie quarterback for a TD. Kerryon Johnson converted a fourth down with a 1-yard TD run late in the first half, giving Detroit a 14-0 that stunned everyone not on their sideline.

“I know to a lot of people there wasn’t much on the line, but to us there is every single week,” coach Matt Patrica said. “We’re going to go out and we’re going to compete.”

Crosby and Matt Prater made field goals over the last 20 seconds of the first half, leaving the Lions with a 17-3 lead.

Rodgers started to make more accurate passes in the second half, such as 20-yard TD pass to Davante Adams and

a 28-yard pass to Allen Lazard with 5:19 left for another score.

The Packers pulled into a 20-all tie after linebacker Blake Martinez had a sack and interception on consecutive snaps.

Jones, who overcame having his hand stepped on, finished with 100 yards rushing on 25 carries and had 43 yards receiving. Adams had seven receptions for 93 yards and a score.

“We haven’t always made it easy and we haven’t always made it pretty, but for the most part, we’ve found a way to win,” Adams said.

MOMENT FOR MARVIN There was a long moment of silence before the game for receiver Marvin Jones’ 6-month old son, who recently died.

Jones, who was on the sideline with his family during the national anthem, went on injured reserve earlier this month.

MINNEAPOLIS—Already sunk by midseason, the Chicago Bears were happy to wrap up a frustrating year with a late-game push for the win.

As far as feeling good for the Minnesota Vikings, body was the easy pick over mind.

Eddy Piñeiro’s fourth field goal of the game came from 22 yards with 10 seconds left, giving the Bears a 21-19 victory on Sunday with the Vikings resting their regulars for the playoffs.

“We’re going to learn from this,” coach Matt Nagy said. “It could have been easy for them to do just that and not be fighters, but they did. That’s the positive.”

Piñeiro, the latest attempt by the Bears (8-8) to solve their persistent kicking trouble, finished the season with 11 straight made field goals. Mitch Trubisky highlighted another unremarkable, conservative performance by hitting Riley Ridley for 34 yards on fourth-and-9 with 2:36 left from midfield to set up the winning kick.

“We just stuck together, believed and put one last drive together,” said Trubisky, who went 26 for 37 for 207 yards.

“I think it was important to just go out on the right note.”

David Montgomery had 23 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown to cap a strong rookie season and help the Bears beat the Vikings (10-6) for the fourth consecutive time. Chicago dodged what would have been a fifth losing record in six years, after winning the NFC North in 2018 in Nagy’s debut.

“I’m just happy I ended on a good

note, and hopefully get ready to compete next year and win my job back,” Piñeiro said.

Minnesota missed a third 11-win season in six years under coach Mike Zimmer, but he was far more concerned about taking a healthy team to the playoffs.

“It was really hard,” Zimmer said of his decision to sideline the starters. “I actually didn’t tell some of the guys until last night. I wanted them to prepare like they were getting ready to play.”

Ifeadi Odenigbo strip-sacked Trubisky in the fourth quarter to pick up the ball and set up Dan Bailey’s fourth field goal for a brief lead for the Vikings, but a replay review negated what would have been Odenigbo’s second fumble return for a touchdown in three games after it was ruled that his knee was down after the recovery.

“I like to win. Like I told everybody, any time that scoreboard’s up there my name’s attached to it,” Zimmer said.

“But I just figured in the long run it’s better if we just play these young guys.”

THE BOONE SHOW Mike Boone rushed 17 times for 148 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings, atoning for three costly miscues in the first half. After a 59-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, Boone fumbled a pitch from Sean Mannion that Bilal Nichols recovered. He bobbled a short pass over the middle on the next possession that Kevin Pierre-Louis intercepted. The Bears turned both of those takeaways into field goals.

Then after a punt by Pat O’Donnell was downed at the 1, Boone stutter-stepped in the end zone to try to

elude an unblocked Nick Kwiatkoski but was engulfed for a safety that put the Bears up 8-3, ultimately the difference in the game.

Boone, who was held to 28 yards on 11 carries on Monday night in the 23-10 defeat by Green Bay, was again the lead runner with Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook and primary backup Alexander Mattison recovering from injuries.

Tight end Kyle Rudolph (81 games) and defensive end Danielle Hunter (48 games) took the first snap for their side of the ball to extend consecutive regular-season start streaks for the Vikings, but the interior offensive linemen were the only starters who broke a sweat and they were out after three series.

“If something were to happen later in the playoffs, guys will have got a little experience under their belt, and it just gives us more depth,” Boone said.

SLOW START Montgomery got his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, but otherwise the Bears offense gave the Vikings’ second-stringers little to worry about. For the 11th time this year, they failed to score a first-half touchdown.

The Bears finished with an average of 4.66 yards per play this season, ahead of only the New York Jets.

IS THIS AUGUST? For the fourth straight year, all since U.S. Bank Stadium opened in 2016, the NFL scheduled Chicago’s visit to Minnesota for the final week of the season.

The Bears also finished on the road against the Vikings in 2014 (outside at TCF Bank Stadium) and 2011 (inside at the Metrodome), and most of these

matchups have come with a exhibition-game vibe.

Both teams were eliminated from contention for the playoffs in 2011, 2014 and 2016. This time, the Vikings were safely in with the No. 6 seed cemented.

Only in 2017, when the Vikings won to clinch a first-round bye, and in 2018, when the Vikings lost to miss the playoffs, were there any postseason positions to determine.

INJURY REPORT Bears: Pro Bowl kickoff returner Cordarrelle Patterson entered the concussion protocol after taking a pair of end-around runs as a wide receiver in the first quarter. Then Anthony Miller hurt his shoulder on his first kickoff return.

Vikings: DT Armon Watts and OT Rashod Hill each left in the fourth quarter with an unspecified left leg injury.

UP NEXT Bears: Regroup for 2020, with the offense the top priority for upgrades.

Collette Rose Braun Hall Collette Rose Braun Hall, 80, of Grantsburg, passed away Dec. 26, 2019.

Born to Michael and Amelia Braun on Jan. 8, 1939, she was the youngest of 11 children all born and raised o on a working farm outside N New Trier, Minn.

Collette graduated with tthe Hastings High School c class of 1957. She married J Jon Hall in 1961, remaining h his favorite dance partner ffor 57 years, and together rraised four children: Guy, W Wendy, Faith and Eric.

Collette often spoke of h her childhood on the farm w with fond memories-except for the chickens! The majority of the younger siblings were male, so she was destined to become a tomboy.

Collette and Jon owned and operated two restaurants in their lifetime. An excellent waitress and restaurant manager, she was much beloved by her customers. For many years, Collette was a runner and enjoyed being a member of the Wild River Ridge Runners. She could often be seen running at dawn before going to work at the restaurant. One of her proudest accomplishments was completing Grandma’s Marathon—twice!

In later years, Collette devoted time to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren attending their many music and sporting events whenever possible. You could always hear her cheering in the crowd. An avid baseball fan, she was determined to watch as many Twins games as she could.

Collette showed her love of church by being active in Circles, counting money, singing in the choir, and helping with Sunday School. She and Jon also spent hours preparing food for Lenten suppers.

Collette was a loving and devoted wife, taking care of Jon in the last year of his life with unbelievable dedication. She was a wonderful mother and a practical, hardworking, independent woman that always gave 100 percent.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Edward, John, and Thomas and her sisters Junilla and Nora.

Collette is survived by her three children: Guy Hall (Tina Rife), Wendy Hall, and Faith McNally (Steven).

She is also survived by four grandchildren: Randi, Shane, Drew, and Jenna, and three great-grandchildren: Evan, Abigail, and Gage. Collette was preceded in death by her loving husband Jon in 2018 and her beloved son Eric in 1991.

Memorial services were held at Faith Lutheran Church, 421 South Russell Street, Grantsburg, on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019 - visitation began at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m.

In Wisconsin, 28 people gave kidneys to strangers this year MADISON — A large number of people donated kidneys this year at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison — and in each case it was a donation to a stranger.

It’s unclear why there was a surge in kidney donations this year — 28 in all — but a staffer at the hospital has a simple theory: “Society in general just wants to do good right now,” Leza Warnke, a UW Hospital transplant coordinator, told the Wisconsin State Journal. “We’re hurting for some ‘feel good.’”

The 28 people who donated their kidneys are a rare type of donor known as “non-directed donors” because they’re willing to give to anyone, regardless of whether they know the person.

Taryn Seymour, a mother of two young children, was among the people in Wisconsin who gave a kidney to a stranger.

“I think the spirit of giving is contagious,” said Seymour, an interior designer who lives near Spring Green, Wisconsin.

UW Hospital had its first non-directed donor in 2003 and from then until 2017 there were an average of four such donors every year. Last year, the number increased to 12 before jumping to 28 this year.

Out of the 28 donors, 22 were women and six were men. Ages of donors ranged from 23 to 78.

Garet Hil, founder and CEO of the National Kidney Registry, said there were about 300 such donors nationwide this year, which still makes the act unusual.

“We don’t know what’s driving it,” Hil said. “It’s still about one in a million. These are very special people.”

Hil said UW Hospital likely had the most non-directed kidney donors in the country, but the United Network for Organ Sharing was

unable to verify that.

Adam Allison, a resident of Verona, Wisconsin, also gave a kidney to someone he didn’t know.

“It was more of a why-not than a why,” he explained.

When Carol Hartmann’s son needed a kidney, but she was not a match. Someone else was able to donate a kidney, and that inspired the teacher from New Berlin, Wisconsin, to give a kidney someone she didn’t know.

“I know what it’s like to be one the waiting end of having a loved one who needs a kidney,” she said.

People like Hartmann contribute to what are known as transplant chains, where mismatched donors along with other incompatible recipients work together to find suitable donors for everyone involved.

“The gift is multiplied,” Hil said.

“That’s a lot of power.”

Governor sued over reluctance to release public records MADISON— The Wisconsin Transparency Project is suing Gov. Tony Evers on behalf of WITI-TV over his reluctance to release emails to the Milwaukee station under the state’s open records law.

Evers released a day’s worth of emails after initially denying the station’s request. Evers was criticized by open records advocates for initially rejecting the reporter’s request because it was not limited to a specific subject.

The station’s reporter first asked for four weeks of emails, then narrowed that to a week after Evers rebuffed the first inquiry. His staff attorneys said turning over a bloc of emails is too burdensome.

Evers’ legal counsel said the office was releasing the governor’s emails from a single day because it was making an exception to a portion of the public records law that says a request for records “is deemed

sufficient if it reasonably describes the requested record or the information requested.”

“Governor Evers’ denial is unlawful,” said Tom Kamenick, the Transparency Project’s president.

“State law requires requesters to provide a limitation on either time frame or subject matter, not both. And even if they do need both, the subject matter of this request was emails to and from two identified people.

That’s more than specific enough to satisfy the law.”

Evers spokesman Britt Cudaback said the governor “is committed to complying with state law and guidance from current and past attorneys general while ensuring transparency and accountability for the people of Wisconsin.”

The Transparency Project is a law firm dedicated to enforcing open records and open meetings laws.

WAUSAU—For decades, those who have participated in snowball fights in one Wisconsin city have risked getting in trouble with the law. But that may be about to change.

A 1962 ban on throwing projectiles in Wausau lumps snowballs into the same category as rocks and other items that can cause serious harm.

City Council President Lisa Rasmussen said that recent negative national attention over the rarely used ordinance has raised questions about whether it could be time to take snowballs off the naughty list.

“Maybe it’s worth giving a look to see if that list could be amended, to mitigate that odd news story that keeps coming up like a bad penny,” Rasmussen said.

Wausau police and the mayor even made a video showing officers having a snowball fight.

“A fun snowball fight is a fun snowball fight,” Deputy Chief Matt Barnes says in the video, “and that’s not something (for which) we enforce this ordinance.”

The video ends with Barnes clocking Matt Barnes Wausau Mayor Robert Deputy Chief Mielke in the back of the head with a snowball.

Barnes said the department has used the ordinance to write about 10 tickets in the last 15 years, according to Wisconsin Public Radio News. The citations included cases of people shooting crossbows into a neighbor’s yard, dropping sandbags off the roof of a downtown parking ramp and, on two occasions, throwing snowballs at passing cars.

The City Council will consider decriminalizing snowball fights at a meeting next month.

Motion by Muehlberg, second by Stone to approve the minutes of the following meetings as presented: October 14, 2019 Village Board; October 15, 2019 Recreation Committee; October 15, 2019 Public Property Committee; October 15, 2019 Infrastructure Committee; October 15, 2019 Administration Committee; October 21, 2019 Special Village Board; October 29, 2019 Administration Committee; November 4, 2019 Recreation Committee. A letter of thanks will be sent to Steve & Raylene Swanson for their generous donation of an American flag to be displayed in the Community Center. The Village Board also acknowledged an anonymous donor that donated $2,500 to be used toward the purchase of lights for the outdoor skating rink that will be at Memory Lake Park.

Included in the Trustee’s meeting packets were DPW Report, Police Chief Report, Clerk/Treasurer Report, Cash Report, Budget to Actual Report, Fire Inspections, Burnett County Administration Newsletter and Burnett County Towns’ Association meeting minutes.

Motion by Muehlberg, second by Peer to have DPW Bartlett purchase lights and have them installed for the outdoor skating rink at a cost of up to the $2,500 that was donated by an anonymous donor for this purpose. Motion carried.

Motion by Peer, second by Barton to send the draft Property Maintenance Ordinance and Smoking Ordinance to Attorney Anders Helquist, Weld Riley, S.C., for his review. Motion carried.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Sturdevant to leave the 48-hour parking limitation on Village streets as it is in the current Ordinance.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Sturdevant to approve the recommended changes to the Community Center/Meeting Room Rental Contract effective for

all new rentals as follows: Full Community Center rent $300 + $150 damage deposit and rentals by non-profit organizations, rentals for charity events, fundraisers, showers, graduations, birthdays, funerals, etc. $100 + $50 damage deposit. The Meeting Room rental and the Fob/Key Deposit of $50 each will remain the same.

Vaping was added to smoking as prohibited and the age for a person to be in charge of an activity in the Community Center was changed from 18 years to 21 years of age. Motion carried.

Motion by Peer, second by Barton to approve the recommended changes to the Community Center Longterm Rental Agreement with the Grantsburg School District gymnastics program to increase the hourly rental from $6.25 per hour to $7.00 per hour and the storage room rental from $75 per month to $100 per month effective 1/1/2020 to 12/31/2020. Motion carried.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Muehlberg to approve the Skating Rink rules as presented by the Recreation Committee.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Stone to open the 2020 Budget Hearing. Motion carried. Trustees asked several questions and deleted $3,000 for new steel on the yellow shed, changed the campground tree replacement from $1,000 to $500 and decided that they would have to borrow $51,580 to pulverize and repave a portion of E. Benson Avenue.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Barton to close the 2020 Budget Hearing at 7:10 p.m. Motion carried.

Motion by Peer, second by Roberts to adopt the 2020 budgets, with changes, as follows: General Fund Revenues $1,550,851 and Expenditures $1,550,851; Capital Projects Revenues $51,580 and Expenditures $118,580; Water Utility Fund Revenues $291,480 and Expenditures $293,654, Depreciation/Amortization $45,138; Sewer Utility Fund Revenues $243,900 and Expenditures $237,260, Depreciation/Amortization $58,877; Storm Water Utility Fund Revenues $72,500 and Expenditures $57,533, Depreciation/Amortization $26,738. Motion by Muehlberg, second by Barton to renew the contract for Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) services with Dennis Quinn, North Lakes Mechanical Consulting Services, Inc. for 2020.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Peer to authorize Clerk/Treasurer Meyer to submit the paperwork to apply for the Election Security Grant from the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Motion carried.

Motion by Muehlberg, second by Barton to allow Kathy Lund to rent the Community Center on Wednesdays from December 2, 2019 to February 28, 2020 for an after school CLC gymnastics class. Motion carried.

Motion by Longhenry, second by Stone to approve pay request #3 from A-1 Excavating for the CDBG Downtown Project in the amount of $244,780.68 and to approve change orders #4 and #5 regarding the crushed blacktop and change order #6 extending the final completion date from October 25, 2019 to May 22, 2020.

NOTICE OF PENDING APPLICATION FOR PROPOSED RIPRAP Paula Dassbach, 3201 31ST Ave NE, Balsam Lake, WI 54810 has applied to the Department of Natural Resources for a permit to install riprap on the banks of Round Lake.

The project is located in the SE1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 27, Township 37 North, Range 18 West, Town of Trade Lake, Burnett County.

The property owner wishes to install fieldstone rip-rap and fabric along approximately 300-feet of shoreline. It is anticipated that site preparation for a winter install will occur during the months of January or February. With a winter install, none of the existing vegetation above or below the OHWM will be damaged.

There is good general vegetation cover along all of the existing shoreline as this is an undeveloped parcel.

The Department will review the proposal provided by the applicant and any information from public comments

and a public informational hearing, if requested.

The Department will determine whether the proposal complies with ss. 1.11 and 30.12(3m), Stats., and ch.

NR 150, Wis. Adm. Code, and ensure that the required mitigation meets the standards in s. 281.36(3r), Stats. if the project impacts wetlands.

The Department has made a tentative determination that it will issue the permit or contract for the proposed activity.

A challenge for the new year

I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas — Christmas really is “the most wonderful time of the year.”

It seems that this time of year brings out the best in many people. I’ve seen and heard of people showing kindness and being generous in celebration of Christmas: The young man helping a neighbor with snow removal, the young lady helping a mom with grocery bags, people giving rides to those who don’t like to drive in the snow.

A person paying off shopper’s lay-away items, a couple anonymously buying a needy family a vehicle. Many stepping in to supply

Christmas gifts for children whose families could not afford gifts this year. These are a few examples.

What inspires these acts of kindness and generosity? Could it be the joy and gratitude in receiving the gift of life, forgiveness found in Jesus Christ? As the angel said in Luke 2:10,11 “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.”

New Year at artZ Gallery For the month of January 2020, artZ Gallery presents: “Beginnings,” the annual theme show, featuring works of gallery member artists and guest artists from the past year, as they interpret the theme. Some of the artists will display earlier artworks as examples of their creative “Beginnings.” Others will show works that express the idea of “Beginnings” with their own meaning and medium.

Approximately twenty-one participating artists will include a variety of mediums.

Mixed media art will be represented by the works of Bonnie Hagen, Han Huisman, Judy Paulson, Julie Adams, Sharyl Manwiller, Brian Hall and Peggy Skold. Painting will be represented by the works of Jan Killian and Deb Stull-Kinsley. Glass art will be represented by the works of Pauly Cudd, Alan Honn and Nan Reinhardt. Pottery will be represented by the works of Win Herberg and Paul Supplee. Photography will be represented by the works of Tin Cat Studio and Earl Duckett. Jewelry will be represented by the works of Edna Early, Sheila Courts and Diane Keeler. Forged steel will be represented by the work of Joyce Halvorson and textiles will be represented by the work of Barbara Erickson.

Four One-Day Painting Workshops with Paul Oman will be offered at artZ Gallery.

All mediums are welcome. Paul will demonstrate in watercolor, but concepts are transferable.

Jan Killian of Woolyfrog Arts will be teaching an Alcohol Ink Intro Class January 25, 2020, at artZ Gallery. Cost $75.

This will be a fun class to experiment with alcohol ink and learn techniques to attempt to control the ink. You will work on tile, canvas and paper. No experience is needed, just come and have fun! All materials will be supplied.
