A visit to the Burnaby Board of Trade by BC Conservative Leader John Cummins this summer capped off a very successful year for the Board’s Distinguished Speakers Series. As part of its mandate to provide its business membership with access to elected officials and policy makers, the BBOT reached out to all three leaders of BC’s major political parties. Last year, the Board welcomed NDP leader Adrian Dix, and in February Christy Clark spoke in front of a crowd of over 350 people at a televised BBOT breakfast event. The
breakfast with Cummins earlier this summer completed the trifecta. “When Paul Holden took over as President and CEO of the BBOT a little over a year ago, the two of us identified this as an area where we could do more to put the interests of the Burnaby business community front and centre,” remarked Events Manager Cory Redekop. “We have always had great success with our political engagements at the municipal level (such as the annual City Council Reception and State of the City mayoral address) and so we thought we would take it to the next level. It’s been tremendously successful.”
Other elected officials who have spoken as part of the Distinguished Speakers Series over the past year include BC Minister of Finance Kevin Falcon; Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell; and federal Minister of State for Democratic Reform, Tim Uppal. The Burnaby Board of Trade expects to continue attracting high profile politicians moving forward, including the possibility of a reprise from the party leaders. “If we could get all three back right before the next election – wouldn’t that be something!” mused Redekop.¡
