As the holiday season approaches so too does the calendar year-end. It’s a time of change – both in terms of the season and in the communiPaul Holden, President & CEO ty. This month, municipal elections are happening all around the province, often with profound consequence for business communities. I would encourage you, before you fall into the hustle and bustle of shopping and celebrating, to reflect on the significance of this time of year, and make sure you exercise your democratic right to vote and ensure Burnaby remains a desirable place to live, work and do business. At the BBOT we also like to use this time of the year to reflect on the successes of our business community over the past twelve months, which we do quite formally at the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards. 2011 Highlights and a Look at the Year Ahead from Message from, 1 Gala, our twelfth annual, celebrated Burnaby businesses in the style of the Roaring Twenties. Attendees were treated to an excellent dinner and wonderful live entertainment as winners and finalists were honoured in nine separate categories, including the 2011 Business Hall of Fame inductee, the Carter Automotive Family. It was a terrific evening, and I would like to thank my staff, the City of Burnaby, and all our sponsors and attendees for making it possible. Looking forward, our annual Christmas Luncheon is coming up on December 2nd and will be held at SFU’s Diamond Alumni Centre atop Burnaby Mountain. I hope to see many of you there enjoying the buffet and the spectacular views at this popular holiday event. Don’t forget to help us make the holiday season a little more special for families in our community by bringing an unwrapped toy for the Burnaby Christmas Bureau. Finally, I would just like to highlight some of the initiatives the BBOT has been involved with through our various social, environmental and economic development committees. Without going into too much detail, we are
pleased to be working with the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table to promote their Workplace Ambassador Program designed to connect internationally trained workers with local employers. We also continue to work with the City of Burnaby and the business community to address homelessness, and we are on the verge of launching a fantastic new resource to help businesses reduce workplace waste as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. Through our Pacific Gateway Committee we are organizing an event to hear from Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, on Asia-pacific trade opportunities, so look out for more information on that in all our communication channels. On behalf of the Burnaby Board of Trade, thank you for your continuing support, and happy holidays! Sincerely,
Paul Holden President & CEO Burnaby Board of Trade
The Ambassador Project: Bridging the Skills Gap in Burnaby The Burnaby Workplace Ambassador Project aims to increase awareness of the barriers and challenges faced by both new immigrant job seekers and by employers working to recruit, hire and retain internationally trained workers (ITWs). It will create opportunities for direct connections between ITWs and Burnaby employers, and will increase
understanding and break down barriers to employment. At the end of the project, 30 “ITW Ambassadors” will have connected with a total of more than 210 “Employer Ambassadors”. Shortly after the launch of the program in October, Shibil Al-Shaibani, an internationally trained professional met with employer ambassador,
Mr. Pierre Gallant, Principal and Vice President of Morrison Hershfield Ltd. “Mr. Gallant shared his unique overview of the industry, his focused practical advice and personal guidance to me,” stated Al-Shaibani in a letter to the Ambassador Project Coordinator Russell Garrett. “When asked for two or three people I could speak to in the field, he
referred me to ten, high level professionals, in seven companies! I can only hope to be, one day, in a position to return his kindness, or to show similar benevolence to an internationally trained colleague. With many thanks to the Ambassadors project, for such a great start.” Visit www.bbot.ca for program updates.
