It’s no secret that advertising and marketing benefit most businesses in a significant way. If it’s done right, businesses profit. If it’s not, they may be forced to shut their doors before too long. The question most business owners face is how to market their product effectively. Tradeshows and exhibitions are too often overlooked as an efficient and

usually very affordable way to promote a product or brand. A study from UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry has shown them to be particularly effective (compared to other forms of advertising) for introducing new products and services, for initiating sales, and for relationship management with existing and future customers. In addition, the face to face contact at exhibitions offers the opportunity to

add a new element to a business’ existing marketing arsenal (such as internet, direct marketing and personal selling). The ability to network while achieving marketing objectives is another credit to the efficiency of these types of events. Success at an exhibition or tradeshow of course depends a lot on ensuring that the product is displayed in a manner that is appealing to the target audience. See Burnaby tradeshow, 3

Mayor Corrigan delivers State of the City address to business audience

Energy conservation, community planning, and affordable housing were the key themes of Mayor Derek Corrigan’s speech at his State of the City address on April 11th. The event, which took place at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, is an annual luncheon organized by the Burnaby Board of Trade for its membership and the business community at large. “Working together, Burnaby council, businesses and citizens have been uniquely successful in achieving the goals we set in our Official Community Plan in 1998, and our 2007 Economic Development Strategy,” said Corrigan. “We are continuing to fortify our plans with the recently completed Social Sustainability Strategy and the upcoming Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Burnaby’s success is the result of careful, inclusive planning and coordinated execution of our goals.”

The Mayor highlighted the city’s open water course bylaw, noting the significant esthetic and environmental benefits Burnaby enjoys. The bylaw in

“Because of targets deliberately and systematically set in our plans, we now have world-class hotels and sports facilities, a thriving film industry, a leading television station and a diverse and engaged community” Mayor Derek Corrigan conjunction with key land acquisitions around Deer Lake (once destined for high-density development) and Burnaby Lake has, according to Corrigan, been part of a greater development strategy

designed to reflect the priorities of citizens and businesses in determining the locations of business parks, libraries, recreational facilities, and town centres. “Because of targets deliberately and systematically set in our plans, we now have world-class hotels and sports facilities, a thriving film industry, a leading television station and a diverse and engaged community,” he said. In terms of a financial position and outlook, Corrigan commented that Burnaby remains strong and continues to attract new business and development. The city remains debt-free with financial reserves of $537 Million, meaning that existing infrastructure can be renewed and replaced when required, providing continuity of service and up-to-date systems, equipment and technology. The Civic Investment Fund, he added, provided a 5.05 per cent return in 2011 correlating to $34.3 million in revenue. “The amount of new projects and initiatives happening in Burnaby is almost dizzying,” remarked Burnaby

Board of Trade Chief Executive Paul Holden. “From the extensive developments in the town centres, the transportation plans, UniverCity up at SFU – it’s no wonder that the rest of Canada looks to Burnaby as a model for planning and sustainability and management. This is exactly why our business community enjoys Burnaby so much for working and doing business in, and this is why we have continued to succeed while so much of the rest of the world struggles in the global economy.” The State of the City address was presented by Simon Fraser University and Telus and sponsored by ABC Recycling, Schmidt & Funk and the 2012 BC Seniors Games. “We help businesses develop relationships in both local and international markets.”

Green week goes blue in June Burnaby Environment Week, which coincides with Environment Canada’s Canadian Environment Week, runs Sunday, June 3rd to Saturday, June 9th with environmentally-themed activities intended to be informative and enjoyable while also encouraging community participation. This year’s theme, ‘Water – Ours to Conserve and Protect,’ is very fitting as this past year Burnaby was recognized as Canada’s first “Blue Community” due to its commitment to public water and wastewater systems. The City also voted to pressure the federal government to invest in a national water infrastructure

system so that all Canadians have access to safe drinking water no matter where they live. During Environment Week the sale of bottled water will be discouraged at City events in support of Metro Vancouver’s Tap Water Campaign. Also falling within Burnaby/Canada Environment week is the 40th anniversary of Global Environment Day on June 5th. Beginning in 1972, the celebration has become one of the main ways in which the United Nations encourages worldwide awareness and political action for environmental issues. The UN has declared 2012 to be the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. The Burnaby Board of Trade will also be celebrating Burnaby Green Week through its Environmental Sustainability Committee, which will be involved throughout the week’s festivities.
