Speaking to a sold-out crowd at the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Breakfast with the Premier last month, Christy Clark presented a message of fiscal prudence and a commitment to middle class families. In regards to the new 2012 Budget, Clark declared the plan as “the most fiscally conservative budget in Canada.” She spoke about protecting

British Columbia’s AAA credit rating and cautioned about the dangers of following down the road of “Greece, France and the United States” in terms of financial management. She stated that her government has created a “modest” budget, but one which will have maximum impact without disrupting families.

Clark reiterated her dedication to families, and claimed her government is working to grow the middle class. She

stated that she will be sticking to net-zero wage increases in the public sector and will work to lower taxes for families and small businesses while growing the private sector.

Letter from BBOT President & CEO Paul Holden Welcome back spring!

Looking out my window I see nothing but sunshine pouring in, and it’s easy to convince myself that it isn’t still freezing cold outside. Of course the weather can’t last – it is only March after all, and in a few days it will be raining again. But what’s the Lower Mainland without a little drizzle?

Here at the Burnaby Board of Trade we are definitely feeling the energy of the new season. It has been a very busy winter that has seen us ring in the Lunar New Year, celebrate sustainable business at our Environmental Forum, and even welcome Christy Clark for a rare visit to the BBOT by a BC Premier. Plus

our membership is growing. Burnaby has always been a vibrant business community, and I’m proud to say that now more than ever businesses of all types and sizes are recognizing the value and importance of coming together to foster greater prosperity for all of us.

The Burnaby Board of Trade is also working to secure the future of our business community through our new Access program designed to develop youth leadership and prepare final year post-secondary students to enter the workforce. The program, which is the result of so much hard work over the past several months by staff, local students, and our new Future Leaders Committee, will commence in September with first enrollment beginning in April. Participants will benefit from components such as youth focused networking events, workshops, and our unique “Connector” mentorship opportunities, after which they will graduate the program with a letter of recommendation. More importantly,

Access will provide these young professionals with the skills, confidence and experience necessary to compete in a tough job market, and to be successful in the workplace.

Finally, I would just like to point out the next major event we have coming up, our annual State of the City Luncheon.

The event will take place on April 11th at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown and is the best chance for our members to hear from Mayor Derek Corrigan on City Hall’s plans for Burnaby for the coming years.

Operating a business without an employee policy manual is like playing a hockey game without rules. The absence of guidelines and structure can result in confusion, frustration and a few palms to the face. Burnaby Board of Trade’s Key Competencies

So what exactly is a Board of Trade?

I’ve been asked this question a few times since I began working for the Burnaby Board of Trade just short of one year ago. It’s kind of a great question. After all, we’re in the business of growing our membership and not even our own website has a straightforward definition.

There are a lot of times in life when you come across a term/concept/idea/ word you simply can’t define. Often, you’ve heard it mentioned many times before, but life’s experiences haven’t granted you the opportunity to quite grasp what it is. You don’t want to ask for fear of sounding dumb. If you really need to know, Google and Wikipedia are terrific resources, but even they sometimes skip over the basics and jump right into the convoluted detail.

Sometimes it’s nice to just get a simple straight answer.

Board of Trade is essentially a

synonym for Chamber of Commerce.

If there is any meaningful difference between the two, I couldn’t tell you what it is. For some people this is a perfectly sufficient answer. They know what a Chamber of Commerce is, but they’ve just never heard it referred to as Board of Trade (or vice versa).

For the rest of you, a Board of Trade (or Chamber of Commerce) is a business organization made up of a membership

Board of Trade is essentially a synonym for Chamber of Commerce. of local businesses in a community. These organizations work to bring businesses together to develop strong networks, to represent the interests of the business community to local government, and to

foster economic development. They also usually provide a range of services and benefits to their members such as specialized or exclusive events and workshops, and discounted rates on common business expenses. In addition they often provide services such as business registration, business name approvals, and certification of Certificates of Origin.

Boards and Chambers also exist at the provincial or state level (such as the British Columbia Chamber of Commerce), as well as at the national level (e.g. the Canadian Chamber of Commerce). These organizations usually work to represent business interests to higher levels of government and serve to advocate on relevant legislation.

The stunning Electronic Arts campus in Burnaby once again provided the setting for the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Environmental Sustainability Forum for Business on March 7th. The event, which was presented by BC Hydro and Encorp Pacific, and hosted by EA, offered attendees the opportunity to discuss the business case for sustainability through informal reception-style networking in addition to a panel presentation and Q&A session.

This year’s panel was comprised of four speakers representing small and large business, education and social enterprise. They included James Tansey from UBC’s Sauder School of Business and CEO of Offsetters; Elizabeth Sheehan

from Climate Smart; TransLink’s Director of Corporate Sustainability, Trish Webb; and Damien Kettlewell, President of JAK Group (including Burnaby’s Great Bear Pub and Liquor Store). Facilitating the discussion was Coro Strandberg, Principal of Strandberg Consulting, and member of the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Environmental Sustainability Committee.

Throughout the evening each of the panel members delivered an inspiring overview of their corporate objectives and positive results. Sheehan noted that one of Climate Smarts clients managed to save $17,000 simply by turning off the lights at night. At Translink, heavy investment in hybrid electric/diesel buses and an electric trolley system has had a great impact on lowering the company’s carbon footprint, according to Webb.

In addition to the cost savings afforded by LED lighting and refrigeration timers, he noted the value of being seen as a responsible business for attracting new customers. “We wanted to attract a younger demographic, and we’ve had some success doing that,” said Kettlewell.

“It’s also been good for staff retention.

In our recruitment efforts a lot of people have expressed interest in our sustainable commitments when asked why they want to work for us.”

Businesses interested in reducing their environmental impact while saving money should look out for the Burnaby Board of Trade’s new Environmental Pledge program expected to be launched in the coming months.

Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) enriches the lives of its clients

Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) exists to serve the community and foster greater independence and enrichment for its clients. By raising, training and placing life-changing assistance dogs, PADS helps those facing a range of physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Each special dog is matched with a client to create a life-long bond which PADS works to support throughout the dog’s working life.

PADS clients who depend on their dogs speak volumes about their experiences. “When I drop an object on the floor or need to open a door, Ember can assist me without having to wait for a care giver,” says Clayton March of his

assistance dog. “Having Ember has also taught me a lot about responsibility as I have had to care for her and ensure that she is kept happy and healthy. When I’m in public, having Ember by my side gives people a clear indication that I am a confident and competent young man.”

“People are often curious about Ember which leads to opportunities to engage in conversation and helps me meet new people. I can no longer imagine a life without an assistance dog.”
